Chat with former Houston WR Donnie Avery
![]() |
Avery had a bust out year in his senior year at Houston. He posted career highs in every major statistical category. He had 91 catches for 1,456 yards for a 16.0 per catch average to go with his seven TDs. He had a career day this past season on Oct. 13 against Rice. He caught 13 passes for 346 yards and two TDs.
According to Avery's Scouts Inc.'s draft profile, Avery "is quite possibly the fastest player in the 2008 class. While there's no doubt of his homerun-hitting potential for the next level, Avery remains too one-dimensional, with really just the ability to run go routes to threaten a defense. He is somewhat reminiscent of New Orleans and former LSU burner Devery Henderson, who has not transitioned to the NFL very well."
Send in your questions now, then join Avery on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET!

We've got Donnie!
Mark H. (Bowling Green, OH)
What NFL WR do you compare yourself to?
Donnie Avery (3:24 PM)
I would have to say Isaac Bruce, Marvin Harrison. Those guys. They have the dedication and the desire to be the best. That's the kind of dedication that I have.
Dale (Louisville)
how happy were you with your combine performance?
Donnie Avery (3:25 PM)
I wasn't happy at all, because the week before the combine, I pulled my hamstring. Then I didn't run as fast as I wanted to. I ran in the 4.4s and I usually run in the 4.2s. But I can't change that and I'll just have to show them at my pro day.
James (Chicago)
do you like having a reputation of being a speed receiver? Or would you rather have people just talk about you being a good receiver?
Donnie Avery (3:25 PM)
I rather have people talk about me as a speed receiver. Not everyone can be a speed receiver, because not everyone has the speed.
James (Staten Island)
As a big Jet fan I would love to see them get a speedy wide receiver like you, do you think there any chance of them draftin you?
Donnie Avery (3:26 PM)
I had a conversation with them. I had two or three meetings with them. I had a meeting with the WR coach. They're very interested in me.
Brian (Seattle, WA)
Scouts claim you are a vertial offense type of reciever, do you think you could be as productive in a west coast offense?
Donnie Avery (3:27 PM)
Yeah. I had a real good Senior Bowl in that West Coast offense with the 49ers. A lot of people don't think I can be a prolific receiver because of the offense I came out of. But I can be.
Charlie (Milwaukee)
what clicked last year that allowed you to produce at such a high level?
Donnie Avery (3:28 PM)
Just studying the game. More film study on our opponents. Practicing every day like it was game day. Games became practice for me.
DC Duck (Washington)
who hit you the hardest in football so far?
Donnie Avery (3:28 PM)
I never had a concussion before, but it felt like I had one. I can't remember his number, but I think it was a LB on OK State.
Ed from Fla.
Hi Donnie:Have you been invited to any personal workouts with any particular teams other than Houston's pro day, and which teams are showing the most interest in you thus far? thanks!
Donnie Avery (3:30 PM)
I have been invited to various private work outs. Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets wanted a private work out. And there were various scouts that will be at my pro day too. They've all shown a good amount of interest.
Kenny (Tampa)
WHY SHOULD I DRAFT YOU BEFORE THE 4th ROUND?
Donnie Avery (3:31 PM)
I bring that big play impact to your organization. When we're down, you can count on me. I'm not just a guy that plays WR, I play special teams to. It's a win-win situation.
Cameron (SoCal)
Hey Donnie, I know yu would be happy to be with any team but if you could pick a team to start your career with, who would it be and why?
Donnie Avery (3:32 PM)
Good question. I really don't have a favorite team, but any team that picks me, I will be grateful to them to start my career.
Kathy (Arkansas)
How can you contibute the most this year?
Donnie Avery (3:32 PM)
Probably playing a lot of special teams. Getting right in there to play special teams. And becoming a second or third receiver.
Kyle (LasVegas, NV)
What do you expect to the 40 in on pro day?
Donnie Avery (3:34 PM)
The combine, I had a pulled hamstring and I had a 4.4. I told the scouts before that I had a pulled hamstring and I wasn't sure if I was going to run. They respected my competitiveness. I normally run in the 4.2 range.
Gary (Phoenix)
What do you predict for the 40 in on pro day?
Donnie Avery (3:34 PM)
Low to mid-4.2s. The hamstring feels healthy and I feel good.
Bill (Chicago)
Donnie are you the fastest Wide Receiver in this draft? Will you play slot or one of the flankers in the NFL?
Donnie Avery (3:35 PM)
I do feel like I'm the fastest receiver in this draft. I really don't care which one I play, the outside or the slot. I've done both of them.
Dan (Detroit)
What will you miss the most?
Donnie Avery (3:36 PM)
My family. I have family down here.
Cameron (SoCal)
Which QB in the NFL would you most like to have throwing the passes to yourself?
Donnie Avery (3:36 PM)
I probably would say Kevin Kolb. It will bring back that chemistry that we had in college.
chris odum (van wert,ohio)
Well we know youre fast but do you think you can keep that top speed thru the brutal NFL season?
Donnie Avery (3:37 PM)
Just like practice is important, getting rehab and treatment is important. It will help you take those hits and get stronger in the weight room.
Scott (Wilkes-Barre, PA)
What style of offense and which team do you see yourself fitting in best with?
Donnie Avery (3:37 PM)
With my speed and my agility, I can fit in any type of offense.
Aaron (Florida)
most memorable moment atHouston?
Donnie Avery (3:38 PM)
Going to the CUSA championship. That's one game that I felt like it was a team game.
Donnie Avery (3:38 PM)
Team chemistry in that game.
Eric (Ontario)
I am curious as to how you train? whats your leg rotuines like?
Donnie Avery (3:39 PM)
I do a lot of sprints, 50 yard sprints, building it up from 20. Getting full speed at 50 yards.
Donnie Avery (3:40 PM)
Thanks a lot for being interested in my life.
