Dave (Seattle, WA)
Hi Scott - So Shields and McGowan have been talked up a lot. Shields seems to go earlier in most drafts. My question is which would you rather have for 2 years assuming they were drafted in the same round and you pay that round next year? What if McGowan was taken 5 rounds later than Shields (7th and 12th)? Thank you!
Scott Engel (3:04 PM)
Welcome ot the fantasy ports chat - will also take football, AFL and NASCAR questions today. I think Shields is going to make a quicker impact, and even with rounds taken into account, I love his upside and I want him over McGowan for the next two years
Kelly (BFE)
Scott, you're rockin' the suburbs! Anyway, I hear all these experts touting Billy Butler. I want to go along, but my roster's pretty solid - would you drop any of hitters Ellsbury, Hamilton, Ibanez, Wells, or pitchers Maine, Oliver Perez, Blanton or Percival for him? And if I were to drop one, would I be better off grabbing an upside guy like Butler, or Taveras? I could use the steals. Thanks.
Scott Engel (3:06 PM)
Buteruis being described as a "beast" by some scouts and can really produce good numbers this year. I would certainly drop Percival if you have other options for saves
John (Philly)
What do you hear about Votto? Any chance he starts for Reds
Scott Engel (3:07 PM)
I like him to start and hit 25 homers or a bit more this year.
Steve: Long Island, NY
I have F. Hernandez, Dice-K, Shields, gallardo, lincecum, mcgowan im my 5x5 league... should i try to package two for one and start one 3rd tier guy (such as gallardo, mcgowan, or lincecum) every week or stand pat?
Scott Engel (3:09 PM)
I think your staff needs one more truly outstanding starter, so make a deal, but keep Hernandez out of it. I like him as a No. 2 guy behind Bedard this year.
james
I've heard that Abreu has been a beast this spring, do I move him up on my draft board?
Scott Engel (3:10 PM)
I wouldn't - once play begins for real, you'll find that the old powere production of his prime year still isn't quite there
Matt (Boston, MA)
Scott, I'm a Red Sox homer and big Jon Lester fan however I'm worried that his WHIP is going to kill my fantasy team. I already have Verlander, Zambrano, Rich Hill, Randy Johnson, Dustin McGowan, and Carmona as starters so should I drop Lester for maybe someone like Manny Delcarmen (my league counts holds and I already have both Brotxon and Tony Pena) or a bench player like Butler? Or should I just keep Lester and hope he works out his control problems. Thanks Scott.
Scott Engel (3:12 PM)
Red Sox fan or not, I think you have to hold onto Lester and give him a chance - if he starts hurting you, then drop him, but I think doing it now would be hasty
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer (in front of a raised platform thingy wi
Your ways of fantasy baseball confuse and frighten me, yet I can't help wondering whether Carlos Gomez will steal 50 bases this year....any insight?
Scott Engel (3:13 PM)
I LOVE that sktehc! How about Lothar of th eHill people? I would keep an eye on his current injury, and temper my expectations ot more about 40.
Josh (phx)
Went against the grain and drafted pitching heavy, left with high risk/reward hitters. My pitching staff is Webb, Bedard, Hamels, Sabbathia, Haren, Verlander and Zambrano. Who should I look to trade to get a better OF (the guy with the mosrt preciecved value). Also, if it's not toomuch to ask, Sherril, Accardo, CJ Wilson, Lyon and Wood are available (need another closer, I have marmola and jons). Thinking Wood and Accardo? Would drop Ellsbury and laroach.
Scott Engel (3:15 PM)
I would hold onto Ellsbury, at least or a little while, but I would get Accardo and Lyon by dropping other players. Love hwo you have, so move Zambrano, who may be a bit overrated now, or Hamles, who can always scare you as an injury risk
Vernon (Washington, DC)
With Ryan Braun manning 3b is there any reason for me to hold onto Edwin Encarnacion? Theriot is available and I could use a guy to backup Weeks at 2b.
Scott Engel (3:16 PM)
I like Theriot and I would add him regardless. You'll find Bruan to be very comfortable at 3B with 40-homer numbers
Ryan (NYC)
What do you think of Adam Jones this season? I feel lik ehes being lost in the Maybin, Bruce, Upton hype.
Scott Engel (3:18 PM)
I think he can produce well and is flying below some people's radar - I certainly like him better than Maybin, who needs more polish.
Vinny (Elmont, LI)
My team's strong everywhere but SBs. Who do you recommend to boost my speed without hurting me too much in other areas: Gomez, McLouth, Patterson, Lugo or Bourn?
Scott Engel (3:20 PM)
I would go or McLouth first, and get Patterson for now, but I can't say he will be dependable or hold onto the job all year
Bernard (Princeton, NJ)
My 4th OF is set to be Luke Scott, Hermida, or Milledge. Should I expect decent numbers for one or more of these guys?
Scott Engel (3:20 PM)
I like Hremida best of the three right now - I think Milledge will be very incosnsistent as a regular this year
johnny Rocco (Dedham, MA)
Sorry Scott, clicked by accident. What do you think of the bounce-back chances for Konerko and Jason Bay?
Scott Engel (3:21 PM)
I think you will still get very reliable power production from Konerko, but there are no guarantees with Bay, and you'll have ot willing to take him on as a risk
re: Theriot
Isnt he a risky add with Brian Roberts potentially stealing the leadoff spot? Would you rather have Aaron Hill?
Scott Engel (3:23 PM)
I still like Theriot, because he has a good batting eye, will still steal some bases and score some runs.
Chris (Edina, MN)
Hey Scott, I'm in a 5 team 4x4 Twins only roto league. We track HR, RBI, BA, SB and W, K's, WHIP ERA. 2 position players and 2 pitchers per team and a DL spot. I don't have a question but thought the people in this chat could benefit by hearing of such an awesome league.
Scott Engel (3:25 PM)
That's interesting. But from my perspective, as a Mets fan, I wouldn't wantt o dilute the roster and root or certain guys ot fail at the expense of a win.
Lou (Hackensack, NJ)
Hey Scott, I didn't know you knew about Baseball too, I thought you only handled Football. Do you know anything about Rogaine? Well doesn't look like it but you should really try it out.
Scott Engel (3:26 PM)
I shave my head by choice. You should try asking a real question.
Phil (Atlanta, GA)
Your choice: Veteran Johnny Damon or the oft-injured Jeremey Hermida?
Scott Engel (3:28 PM)
I do like Hermida's upside. But I would stick with Damon until I see more form Hermida
Jack - Austin, TX
Scott, our keeper league commissioner traded Lastings Milledge, and two Orioles prospects, Olson and Patton, to his wife, for Gary Sheffield. Did he take advantage of her, and the rest of the teams, as much as it appears?
Scott Engel (3:30 PM)
I think that needs to be put to a vote, a sit is certainly questionable, and i would likely vote against it.
Mike(Thornhill)
After watching Francisco Liriano pitch today...What are your thoughts on him? Is he staying up in the Majors or heading down to the minors?
Scott Engel (3:31 PM)
H emay begin the season in th eminors for some tuneup work, and as exciting as he can be, be careful not to overrate him. Be patient with him as he works his way back this season
Dan (NY)
What are your thoughts on Vernon Wells this year? Would you be OK with an OF of Ichiro, Wells and Franoeur?
Scott Engel (3:33 PM)
Wells has to show more patience at the plate,a nd i think th enew hitting coach will help rein him in. Yes, I like that OF as long as you have some bench insurance for Wells in case things do not work out and you have other dependable power hitters in your infield spots
Gordon- East Brunswick, NJ
What do you think of the following two trades in a standard 5X5 head to head 12 guys (i need pitching) Byrnes for Harang Cano for Rich Hill and of the 3 who should I drop Conor Jackson Lastings Milledge Carlos Gomez
Scott Engel (3:35 PM)
I would much rather have Harang and wouldn't do that deal personally, and no way would I give up Cano for Hill. I would drop Milledge of those three when you consider Gomez's steal potential
Moe
Where's the NASCAR talk? Who will win this week in Pittsburgh?
Scott Engel (3:37 PM)
Always glad to answer NASCAR questions. But it's Martinsville. Even though Gordon and Johnson have dominated at the site in the past, they have not started well this year and i like Kyle Busch, then Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Ryan (PA)
What are your thought on Sabathia in a dynasty league. I keep 5 SP a year and currently have CC, Verlander, Hughes, Cain, Lincecum, McGowan and Kershaw. IS it time to sell CC at his highest or ride him for a couple years?
Scott Engel (3:39 PM)
You have to keep CC this year as he is looking for a big payday after the season, and you want to win this year, first and foremost. And i he ultimately somehow ends up in the NL, you will regert moving him. Don;t outthink yourself.
Niels (NYC)
I took Utley before Holliday in Round 1 (sixth pick) and am kicking myself for it. Help me feel better?
Scott Engel (3:40 PM)
What's done is done, and you will love the numbers you get from Utley, especially when you look at the rest of the position
Chuggies: Warsaw, IN
Lou's right, you really should stick to the NASCAR and fantasy bowling. Here's one for you, give me a projection on Cantu for this year.
Scott Engel (3:42 PM)
If you don't like my analysis, why did you ask me about Cantu? Go check out projections in the draft kit.
Scott (Chicago)
I have the last pick in a 16 team league. Would taking Victor Martinez with my first pick in the second round be a bit of a reach?
Scott Engel (3:43 PM)
I wouldn't go for a catcher at that slot, as you can still get a decent one later on - take th ebest player available, but also consider position scarcity at 2B and the dropoff at OF after the top guys
tom (portland, or)
Should I worry about Kent? I can trade Fielder for Utley since I have Berkman...
Scott Engel (3:44 PM)
"Don't trade Prince Fielder ..." "NOOOOOOOOOOOO1"
Bald is Beautiful (DC)
Would you rather have Percival or Betancourt? My only other relievers are Valverde and Hoffman. Thanks.
Scott Engel (3:45 PM)
I'm not too hot on Betancourt getting a lot of save chances, so I would stick with Percival and watch the free-agent list. You'll do Ok with Valverde and Hoffman
Chris (NY)
Over/under 19 saves for Tony Pena?
Scott Engel (3:46 PM)
Under - I'm not a big fan of lyon, but Pena doesn;t have the confidence yet to match the stuff in critical situations, and I worry about the D-Backs firemen
John (NYC)
Delgado - yea or nay?
Scott Engel (3:48 PM)
Hi age and hip would concern me all year long - I would look elsewhere for a 1b or CI
jason (queens)
reyes or handley ramirez second pick in the draft?
Scott Engel (3:49 PM)
I have a slight concern that ramirez won't be able to repeat what he did last year, and I feel safer with Reyes, Personally, I want Santana second.
Matt, St. Louis
Scott, Please help. I take mostly hitters with my first picks in the draft and opt for a rotation of upside. I've got Felix Hernandez, Francisco Liriano, James Shields, Vasquez, McGowan, and Parra. What do you think? Is this the AAA roation they make it out to be?
Scott Engel (3:50 PM)
I think Hernandez and Shields will serev you well for sure, but you need to make a trade for at least one top-level, dpendable guy if possible
Pete (FL)
Scott, in the last round of a 10 team mixed H2H league would you take a safe pick like Raul Ibanez (since you know what you're going to get with him 20HR, 90 RBIs, .280 BA) or would you go with an unproven guy like Billy Butler? Thanks Scott.
Scott Engel (3:52 PM)
I would go with Butler - all "Upside" guys have varying outlooks, butI really beleive he is in for a very good year
jason (west orange nj)
What you think of arods prediction for Jeter being Mvp this season? If not will this be his best year?
Scott Engel (3:53 PM)
I think that's just hyperbole. Jeter will still be very good, but hios defense is slipping and his best years are behind him. I say Sizemore for MVP
jason (queens)
reyes or david wright?
Scott Engel (3:55 PM)
Reyes - the steals numbers are simply too good, and I'll get my power elsewhere. If Wright was a 40-homer guy, I'd take him, but he's not
Rich (Richmond)
You would rather have Fielder than Utley? Seriously?
Scott Engel (3:56 PM)
No - and I meant to follow up on that - justa great quote I could not resist, and considering the state of 2B, Utley for sure
Kevin (NJ)
Scott, would you rather have Loney or Butler as your backup 1B (Adrian Gonzo is my starter)?
Scott Engel (3:57 PM)
I do like Loney, but I will take Butler for more immediate impact.
Chris (Saratoga, NY)
Hey Scott...can you give us some possible sleepers for saves this year?
Scott Engel (3:59 PM)
I like Accardo, if you really want to consider him a sleeper, Marmol, and especially Fukomon
Scott Engel's Stalker
Hey Scott, I just finished last night's leftovers and I wanna take a shower, where do you keep the clean towels?
Scott Engel (4:02 PM)
Next to the Arena Football media guides - just open the closet and look behind the Santan and Seaver jerseys
ocho cinco
hey scott, am i #1 on your early nfl draft board?
Scott Engel (4:03 PM)
You're not in my top 5 WRs right now.
Chris (Oregon)
TMR always praises the fantasy work that you guys do, and while it's good, I'd say you still have lots of work to do...you don't do any Fantasy Basketball or Hockey!!! Come on, NASCAR? AFL??? And don't bring up the articles that you guys do on hockey and basketball....
Scott Engel (4:06 PM)
You would be very surprised at how many people play fantasy racing. Our AFL game has a very dedicated and growing following. Karabell does great hoops analysis and we have a fine staff that covers everything from the NFL to the MLS. I'd say it's you who need to do the homework ....
Dan (NY)
OK, good to hear you would trade Fielder for Utley. Would you really take Santana at 2?
Scott Engel (4:07 PM)
Yes, I always value elite pitchers highly and love to get a guy who is moving to the NL, a pitcher's park, and will get better offensive and defensive support. I am also very high on Webb and Bedard
Ryan (Hoboken, NJ)
Trade Ibanez for Oliver Perez..Have Crawford, markakis and corey hart as other OFs
Scott Engel (4:08 PM)
You might be able to do a bit better than Perez. Thanks a lot everyone!
