Mark Garrow (3:59 PM)
Good afternoon everyone..I trust everything is Fan-tabulous in your part of the world and let's get this party started!
Derek (Alexandria, Va)
Riggs did a top 30 in Texas, which as my 5th driver worked out ok. What are his chances this weekend? Any other dark horses I should consider?
Mark Garrow (4:01 PM)
I think Riggs will run better than top-30 at Phoenix and I think you have to look no farther than his new teammate Johnny Sauter is your looking for a dark-dark horse. Sauter is taking over for Jeremy Mayfield and last year ran 9th and 15th at Phoenix..I also like as dark-horses David Ragan, Casey Mears and even Paul Menard believe it or not.
Paul, Whitinsville, MA.
I would like your opinion. I have Brian Vickers and Juan Pablo Montoya as my third and fourth drivers in fantasy, Vickers is running well but seems content finishing in the top 20. While Juan is more aggressive. I have been starting Montoya of late who would you start this week and why ?
Mark Garrow (4:03 PM)
I like Montoya a little bit better than Vickers this week..Couple of reasons..Seems like Montoya's team starting to get it together..Also you drive Phoenix much like a road course in attacking the turns..something we talked about a Martinsville where Montoya finished 13th..
Tom Riverside, CA
Who do you think will win this weekend at Phoenix?
Mark Garrow (4:04 PM)
My top-five pre-race, pre-practice picks are Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Burton..I think the winner comes from that group.
Is Carl Edwards a must own in SCC this week since its another intermidiate track? Whats your opinion on Jimmie Johnson hes looked good the last couple weeks?
Mark Garrow (4:06 PM)
No I don't think Carl Edwards is a must own this week. On the flat tracks, Carl has not been the "flyer" as he has been on the intermediate speedways with banking. I rank him 11th this week. Johnson is back on the rise again. I don't think the Hendrick group has lost a step on the flat tracks, it's the 1.5's with banking that has been hit or miss for them. Johnson runs top-five or better at Phoenix.
Marc (Gulfport, MS)
Mark- In a league where you can only start a driver nine times. I'm sitting Jr. and Ky. Busch but am thinking of rolling with Truex and Mark Martin this weekend. Thoughts?
Mark Garrow (4:07 PM)
I'd say you'd probably do decent..both could sneak into the top-10. I don't see either as top-five material..I can see them finishing 7th to 14th.
I know its early but who are your top 5 this week?
Mark Garrow (4:08 PM)
Hey Greg, I posted the top-five a few minutes ago..what do you think..you disagree or agree with me?
Which driver would you rather have, Biffle or Kurt Busch for the remainder of the season?
Mark Garrow (4:09 PM)
I think Biffle has more upside because he has consistently outperformed Busch at the start of 2008, especially on the 1.5 mile high bank tracks that make up the majority of the races.
What do you think of Jeff Gordon?
Mark Garrow (4:16 PM)
I think Jeff Gordon is going to bounce back with a top-five this week at Phoenix and may make a run at winning the spring race there for the second year in a row. Look at what he and Hendrick Motorsports did at Martinsville..could be more of the same thing at Phoenix..Remember flat track and won't have aero problems Gordon and teammate Jimmie Johnson have run into this year on the big tracks.
In my league we have our own chase (last 10) which is our playoff time. Do you see any weak link in my team of Johnson, Edwards, Biffle and Newman over the last 10 races?
Mark Garrow (4:17 PM)
Johnson and Edwards will obviously be rock solid..Biffle and Newman could stand to be a little more consistent but at worst should nail down top-15's every week.
Mark: I got Smoke, Kyle Busch, Burton, Hamlin and a low fifth from last week is Skinner How well do I fare this weekend? Is skinner racing this week ( Ihave him locked) or do I need to get someone else?
Mark Garrow (4:20 PM)
I like Smoke, Burton, and Hamlin a lot..Rowdy Busch I'm not so sure of..I think you can do better with Johnson, Gordon, Harvick, or Dale Jr..Skinner is running Phoenix, but you need to ditch him. I talked with Vickers' crew chief last week and he told me 84 experiments a lot for them since they are higher in the points..Low budget think about Johnny Sauter, David Ragan, Scott Riggs or maybe even Paul Menard.
should the weather have any effect on who I put in my lineup?
Mark Garrow (4:22 PM)
No, I don't think so..unless maybe qualifying is rained out and you start by points and your guys are way, way back in the pack it might give you pause..but no I don't think weather has really any impact...oops thought of another scenerio...if it gets real hot the young guys deal with that better..don't see that as issue this week however.
How will Dale Jr run this weekend?
Mark Garrow (4:22 PM)
I've got him ranked sixth and can see him run from 4th to 8th..slight chance to win.
Do you think Johnny Sauter will be in the 70 car for good, it seems like its just temporary at the moment?
Mark Garrow (4:23 PM)
There's not much out there right now so Sauter might be in the ride beyond Phoenix...but that's all he's been promised is this weekend in Phoenix.
If you had to choose between Vickers, Sauter, Menard, Riggs, Kvapil, or Hornish this week, who would you go with to have a solid run?
Mark Garrow (4:26 PM)
Patrick, that's a toughie..based on last year's performance probably Sauter..Vickers, though, is a nice safe top-20 pick..Menard intrigues me after he ran 15th at Martinsville..Kvapil is top-20..Hornish maybe top-25..Riggs could run from 15th to 25th possibly.
What drivers would you rank as your intermediate track top 5?
Mark Garrow (4:28 PM)
For tracks with banking..Edwards, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton and Dale Jr....For flat tracks..Stewart,Hamlin,Gordon, Johnson, and Jeff Burton..
Mark: Tell ESPn Stockcar Fantasy people to put Johnny Sauter up on their list of drivers? He's not there. Oh yeah, one more thing, tell them to rank him low like 10.9 or below so I can get a great 4th driver.
Mark Garrow (4:29 PM)
Consider it done..I'm sure there is someone in ESPN Fantasy land reading your post right now..come on boys let's take care of Ryan!
What happened to Biffle last week? All I heard was he had a vibration, pitted and next thing you know he's 39th.
Mark Garrow (4:29 PM)
Hehad a problem with a right rear tire I believe and then I was told he had an electrical problem late and that's the reason he dropped like a stone.
Brad, Chester Illinois
currently I have 99, 20, 07, 18 and Blaney. they were very good for me last week. If you were me what would you do? stay with what I have or get rid of Blaney for someone else and if I do that, then I have to cut one of my better drivers to get a better lower racer
Mark Garrow (4:31 PM)
99,20,07..real good shape at Phoenix..18 I'm a little "iffy" on..might think of getting rid of him and Blaney and gain some cap space that way..Blaney has justed killed my teams when I take him off the bench. I really thought he'd be better at the start of the season.
Will Johnny Sauter's name be added to the free agency list prior to the Phoenix race?
Mark Garrow (4:32 PM)
Yes, I'm sure it will and I'll send an e-mail to all the ESPN Fantasy folks.
What time are you running your chat wrap since it's a Sat. night race?
Mark Garrow (4:35 PM)
We'll be doing the chat from 5-6 eastern time Saturday afternoon..ending with still 2 1/2 hours before the green flag.
Who do you think will have the best race out of the "second-tier" type guys?
Mark Garrow (4:36 PM)
Again, Patrick I think we need to look at Casey Mears, David Ragan,..Johnny Sauter, Paul Menard and Scott Riggs.
Why are you ranking Edwards so low this week? He was great at Phoenix for the first 100 laps last year until he had an engine failure?
Mark Garrow (4:37 PM)
He was 11th in the spring race there last year and 8th place finish at Martinsville didn't make my heart flutter either..He'll be decent..probable top-10..but I don't see him running top-five and having a chance to win..sorry..
Ryan (LA, CA)
4:32 PM ET ) Yes, I'm sure it will and I'll send an e-mail to all the ESPN Fantasy folks. Mark: Dont't forget the proicing ou promised at 10.9 or below. Thsi is the only way I can get JJ on my team this weekedn with Burton, Smoke, and Hamlin. Man what a team that would be. Help me out.
Mark Garrow (4:38 PM)
Ryan, I promise I will petition the "commissioner" to see what we can do..and yes that would be a pretty good team.
I have to think the 29 car has a legit shot this week to win, and does the 2 car make a small turnaround this week?
Mark Garrow (4:40 PM)
If you're asking me if the 2 will outperform the 29..I don't think so..Harvick has been really consistent at Phoenix..two top-10's last year and a clean sweep in 2006..Solid average finish and he considers it his hometrack so this one is circled on the Harvick home calendar..adds up to him beating Kurt Busch..
What two drivers inside the top 12 in points do you think will have a bad race at Phoenix?
Mark Garrow (4:44 PM)
I like Burton, Harvick,, Dale Jr., Stewart, Johnson, Hamlin and Bowyer to be really good..Kyle Busch is a little "iffy" for me..and so is Kahne..and I'm not super in love with Newman either ..Edwards could run top-10..but not sure about Biffle..he feels more like top-15..that's how I see the top-12 going into Phoenix..
Mark, will Jr win a race this year?
Mark Garrow (4:45 PM)
Scoot, I've said all along he'll win three to five races this year and I'm going to stick with that..at least for a little bit longer..He's been really consistent and when they find what he needs, and they are not that far off, he's going to win some races.
Who are the easiest of all the drivers to talk to? Toughest?
Mark Garrow (4:47 PM)
They are all pretty good actually..just have to be careful if you ask Tony Stewart dumb question you're liable to get jabbed and I don't have a problem with that..You have to pick your times carefully with him, but when he's got the time he can be great..same thing believe it or not for another perceived problem child Kyle Busch..The best is Jeff Gordon..Johnson, Burton and Bowyer not far behind.
Mark Garrow (4:49 PM)
Well, that's going to do it for our little chat today..don't forget race day chat from Phoenix will be from 5:00-6:00 eastern this Saturday afternoon..Thanks everybody for your questions today and I look forward to our next "chat"..May the force be with you and I'm outta here..Have a great day everybody!
Brad, Chester Illinois
Will Johnny Sauter be on the fantasy list as an avaiable choice I dont see him
Mark Garrow (4:49 PM)
Brad, we're working on that as we "chat"..
