Chat with former BYU LB Bryan Kehl
![]() |
Kehl is the 16th ranked OLB in the draft this season. He helped lead BYU to an 11-2 record, including 8-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Kehl led the team with three INTs last season. He was also second on the team in tackles (91) and sacks (4). He set career highs in nearly every defensive category in 2007.
According to Kehl's Scouts Inc.'s draft profile, Kehl "has to improve his ability to shed blockers and he has his limitations in coverage but he's an active run defender and relentless pass rusher capable of disrupting plays in the backfield. He should also contribute on special teams, which helps his value as a mid-to-late round pick."
Send in your questions now, then join Kehl on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET!

We've got Bryan!
Chet (UT)
I hear some people say that they could drop you back as a stong safety. Do you think that you could make that position change and still be effective?
Bryan Kehl (2:30 PM)
I would play anywhere they asked me to and do my best. However, my strong point would be OLB. A couple of years ago, maybe safety would have been possible, but now I weight 240.
Kevin (PHX)
What is your workout session like? Thanks.
Bryan Kehl (2:31 PM)
Very vigorous. I was in Los Angeles in January and February. We worked out twice a day for six days a week. For about 4 hours a day. It was for the combine and pro day. Now it's down to once a day.
D (Coppell, Texas)
Thanks for everything you did for the BYU D last year - you were hands down my favorite player on the team. Whoever takes you in the draft will be getting a STEAL.
Bryan Kehl (2:32 PM)
D, thank you for your support. I appreciate it. Really, my thoughts on the draft are that it's an opportunity to go to the next level. I'm excited to go to the next level. I think whoever gets me will be getting a good deal, because of the character, level of maturity and other things that I bring to the table.
Tyler Tippetts Las Vegas NV
Bryan, do you feel the MTN channel affected your draft status because of the the lack of TV exposure?
Bryan Kehl (2:34 PM)
Yeah, absolutely. There's no doubt. A lot of the scouts, if they had a chance to watch college football didn't have a chance to see myself and other conference athletes play. I think something needs to be worked out so that channel gets more coverage nationwide. Both for myself and the other schools in that conference.
T Monson (SLC, UT)
What kind of feedback are you getting from NFL scouts and what round are you projected to go?
Bryan Kehl (2:35 PM)
I've heard really good things. I've heard first day is what I've heard. I don't expect myself to go in the first round, but I am thinking maybe second or third round. If I were an NFL GM, that's where I would take myself. The intangibles I bring as well as my measureables that I had at the combine would warrant that selection.
Draper. Utah
congrats on such a successfull season! What has been the best the advice you have gotten while preparing for the draft?
Bryan Kehl (2:36 PM)
First of all, thanks for the congrats and support. That's a tough one. John Beck gave me some great advice in promoting myself and having confidence in interviews. Showing that confidence and having them see what kind of player they'll get if they draft me.
Colin (New orleans)
Would you want to play on a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense?
Bryan Kehl (2:37 PM)
Going back to the first question, I'll play in any defense and do my best in it. I might be more comfortable in the 4-3, but I have played in both in my college career and can adjust to both.
Bryan Kehl (2:38 PM)
New Orleans runs a 4-3 and that would be a great fit for me, in talking to the coaches at the combine. That would be a great place to play.
Taylor, Logan, Ut
Bryan - Thanks for all the great moments and BYU and helping the return to glory! Your measurables at the combine, etc., seem to indicate you should be ranked higher in the draft rankings. Do you think you're getting a fair shake? Why or why not? Good luck!
Bryan Kehl (2:39 PM)
Thanks for the support again. It's kind of an uphill battle that you have to fight when you come from a smaller school. But I think when it comes down to it, whoever does draft me will get a steal of a deal. I don't have a problem putting myself up against the other OLBs in the draft. Whoever does get me, I will prove to them that I am a top LB prospect.
Ben (Dallas)
What are some of the things Coach Mendenhall did to prepare you for the NFL?
Bryan Kehl (2:40 PM)
I would say the biggest thing is to be a person of character, both on the field and off the field. He emphasized that there's more to life than football. I might play football, but that's not who I am. That's helped me keep things in perspective and helped me realize there are other things in life.
Ed Kehl, Salt Lake City, Utah
Your brother is a former NFL player, what advice has he given you?
Bryan Kehl (2:41 PM)
He told me to prepare for the worst, the environment, the language and all those things. Go in with an attitude that you're the meanest son of a gun out there, the baddest LB out there and they can't touch you.
Ryan (Madison, WI)
Do you think you are stronger against the run or in defending the pass? Which do you think NFL teams value more, if either?
Bryan Kehl (2:42 PM)
Good question. Right now, I would say the pass, because the position my defense asked me to play. I think it goes both ways, rushing the QB and dropping back into pass coverage. I think I'm a solid run stopper and I have the potential to improve there. I think the team that drafts me will see that and will use me to do both.
G. B. HInckley
How good did it feel finally beating the Utes (my alma mater, though i've always been a Cougar fan) a couple times before graduating? It was a long time coming, no?
Bryan Kehl (2:43 PM)
There's nothing words can express the excitement, the emotion and build up of a BYU-Utah game. I've been involved in four and all have been decided by a TD or less. Those two victories represent the two highest pinnaccles of my career.
Mark H. (Bowling Green, OH)
Which LBs in the NFL do you most enjoy watching?
Bryan Kehl (2:44 PM)
I would have to say Brian Urlacher, because of his physical prowess. All around solid player. Then next to him, Shawne Merriman because of his athleticism and intensity.
Kyle Whittingham (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Do you think that BYU will be able to continue their dominance in the Mountain West Conference?
Bryan Kehl (2:45 PM)
No doubt. We're on top of the mountain. It's going to take a long time before someone knocks us off. Coach has us pointed in the right direction and we're going to keep running.
Jason (Denver, CO)
Where you surprised with the misconceptions about you and your game when you started speaking to teams and draft "experts"? That they thought you lacked athelticism?
Bryan Kehl (2:46 PM)
Yeah, it is kind of interesting to see people expect you to lack speed or fludity of my hips. But then I go out and run a fast 40, a competitive 40. Only a few LBs ran faster. Then the three-cone, there only have been three players in the country that ran a faster time. But I think when I put up those two numbers, I think that helped silence some of those questions.
Bryan Kehl (2:47 PM)
I appreciate the support. It's been the time of my life to be a Couger. Expect years to come of dominance. And I'll represent that spirit and honor at the next level.
