Chat with former Miami DE Calais Campbell

From the DE position, Campbell finished fifth on the team with 50 tackles in 2007. He also finished second on the team with six sacks. As a red-shirt sophomore in 2006, he recorded a career-high 10.5 sacks. Scouts Inc. ranks Campbell as the fifth ranked DE in the draft and 25th overall prospect.
According to Campbell's Scouts Inc.'s draft profile, Campbell "changes directions well for such a taller DE, runs line stunts well and flashes effective swim and rip move when he shoots inside. Shows adequate awareness and generally does a nice job of sniffing out screens. Doesn't always get hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback but jumps fairly well and has very long arms so can make it difficult for the quarterback to find a passing window."
Send in your questions now, then join Campbell on Friday at 2 p.m. ET!

Calais will be here soon!
Calais Campbell (2:01 PM)
Thank you for joining the chat and supporting me!
Karl (Denver)
What is your biggest strength and weakness would you say, as a player?
Calais Campbell (2:03 PM)
My biggest strength would have to be my motor. I play very hard. It comes from a passion for the game. My weakness would be sometimes I do not play with great technique, because I am a big guy so I need to learn to stay low and use my hands better.
Brad(NM)
Calais, huge Canes fan here and wanted to thank you for the hard work you put in while playing there. What are you anticipating the most about becoming a pro?
Calais Campbell (2:04 PM)
Really just having a chance to become a great HOF type player. And I want to play for a Super Bowl. I want to be an early factor in helping my team win. And thank you for being a fan!
Dan (Portland)
Calais, the Skins need a DE, and your old line coach is now our coach. Work for you?
Calais Campbell (2:05 PM)
Me and coach Palermo had a great connection and bond and I would love to play for him again. He is a great coach.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
You're insanely tall for a DE, how do you use that to your advantage and become an impact player at the next level?
Calais Campbell (2:06 PM)
Having the height, if you can stay low, it gives you great leverage against tackles. My long arms can keep offensive linemen off of me. And I can also bat down passes. I can cover a lot of ground with my long arms.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
Have any previous Hurricane DL given you advice? Warren Sapp? The Rock?
Calais Campbell (2:08 PM)
I have received a lot advice from past DL from Miami, one guy is Russell Maryland. But it comes down to doing what I have always done, and being smart. But I was told I really need to become a student of the game and just not use my natural talent. That was the best piece of advice I was given.
Kyle (Boston)
Why did you choose Miami?
Calais Campbell (2:10 PM)
Growing up, I was always taught by my father if I wanted to be the best I had to work harder than everyone else. Miami's recruiting plan was straight forward, and they said it was going to be really tough if I chose them. They said at times I was going to not want to be there, but in the end they said, I was going to be a better player because of it. And that is why I chose the Canes, because of their hard-work philosophy.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Calais, What nfl DE do you compare yourself to?
Calais Campbell (2:12 PM)
I like the way Julius Peppers plays. But it is hard to compare myself to a DE. I also try to be like Ray Lewis, as far as the passion with which he plays. I try to be a passionate player like him. But as far as DE, I would like to play like Julius Peppers, and be like him one day.
Lonnie (Miami)
What's the biggest hit you ever put on someone? Any stand out?>
Calais Campbell (2:14 PM)
Tashard Choice of Ga. Tech told me when I met him, that I hit him the hardest he ever has been hit. He had gainerd a few yards coming around the corner, and I caught him pretty good. I have had a bunch of big hits in my career, but it's not often that someone compliments you and tells you that a hit you delivered is the hardest they ever took.
Trent
What is the state of the Miami football program?
Calais Campbell (2:15 PM)
On the rise. I think that coach has the program going in the right direction and we have a great recruiting class coming in, many of whom came in early to work. So I look forward to watching them next year and rooting them on.
Rush (chicago)
Which nfl QB would you love to lay out?
Calais Campbell (2:16 PM)
Tom Brady would be the guy, but he never gets hit so that will be a big time challenge.
Peter
Would you rather knock a running back's helmet off, or knock a quarterbacks helmet off?
Calais Campbell (2:16 PM)
You get fired for knocking a QB's helmet off these days, but if it was not for the penalties I would take the QBs. But I love getting big sacks on QBs, and reminding them that I am going to be there all night.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Who was your fav. nfl team and player growing up?
Calais Campbell (2:17 PM)
Well I am from Denver so I am a Broncos fan, and I loved Steve Atwater, Shannon Sharp, John Elway and Terrell Davis. And they were winning all those Super Bowls when I was growing up so it was great!
Peter (NY)
What will you miss most about the U?
Calais Campbell (2:18 PM)
Running out of the smoke, that was the coolest thing the first time I did it. And just playing in the Orange Bowl. I will miss everything about Miami, and being around the campus with all the guys.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
That hard-work philosophy would make you a perfect fit to play for the Steelers. Have they shown interest?
Calais Campbell (2:19 PM)
Yes they did. I met with them at the combine, and talked to coach Tomlin, a great coach. I would love to play for him.
Mitch
Calais, which team in the ACC got you most fired up to play?
Calais Campbell (2:20 PM)
Without a doubt it had to be FSU. It was just a different week as far as practice and emotion. It is a big-time game, no matter what the records are and when and where it is being played. If you can't get up for FSU, something is wrong with you.
Calais Campbell (2:21 PM)
Thanks for all your questions and support! I appreciate everyone getting online and have a great day.
