AJ Mass (10:57 AM)
Good morning gang! We're back for yet another hour of chattage, so get those seat belts on, and we'll start this car ride. Everybody ready?
Johjima is 7 of his last 12...is he back or is he just giving those who have hung on this long false hope?
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
I think having the team call up the guy they consider to be the "catcher of the future" is sufficient motivation to light a fire under a guy, even if that guy just got a juicy new contract. I'm not super high on Kenji, but he certainly HAS to improve on his awful start, doesn't he?
Andy (St. Louis)
I'm having a hard time filling 3B in a very deep league. I have Chase Headley and Andy Laroche sitting on my bench, any word on when they'll be up?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
With DeWitt performing as well as he has, I don't think LaRoche has any value even if he does rejoin the team. As for Headley, the fact they called up Gerut ahead of him certainly was a head-scratcher, but I guess they're going to wait as long as possible so that contract clock doesn't start ticking.
Blake (Sioux City)
Need to drop one of these two injury prone pitchers: Big Unit or Harden
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I'm not big on Harden. I think Randy is more useful when he's in there, but he's going to pitch maybe once every two weeks, and give you 6 to avoid injury. So, if you're weekly H2H, I might stick with Rich until he breaks down again, but for a long haul, Randy is my choice.
David (Findlay, OH)
I need saves and Izzy, Gagne and Joe Bo are out available on waivers. Who should I go after for the long haul?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Izzy. Now that she and George are coming to terms with their relationship... oh wait, wrong Izzy. Izzy's not right, but he can be fixed... at least I have more confidence in him working it out than Gagne. It may be a month or two, but I envision him eventually getting his job back. Gagne is through, in my book. And the Indians have better options than Joe Bo, even though I think he will get the job back initially when he's off the DL.
What's the deal with Cliff Lee? He's rediculous. Did anyone see this coming?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
How could anyone see THIS coming? He's off the charts hot. All the numbers indicate that this is not a fluke... I certainly expect him to cool off a bit, but he should stay in the Cy Young discussion for the rest of the way.
Samer (Austin, TX)
Would you drop R. Cano for D. Uggla in a 10 team league?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
I think so. Cano certainly is not someone I would write off, but you're not going to get Uggla's power numbers from Robinson by any means.
What should Ryan Howard owners expect his final line to look like?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I'm not convinced Howard's slow start isn't going to linger longer. I'd say 30 HR's tops and a batting average of .260.
Alex (Hoboken, NJ)
Which one of these stud pitchers would you project are in for a better season? Scott Olsen, Andrew Miller, Matt Garza or Darrell Rasner.
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I think Olsen is a fraud and Miller has the raw stuff, but needs to learn how to "pitch" rather than simply "throw". I'm not going to jump on the young NY pitcher bandwagon just yet... see Hughes and Kennedy for reasons why... but Garza appears to be the real deal.
How is Dan Uggla a FA in a ten team league. I want in Samer's league next year if it's for money. Is Griffey on his way out making room for Bruce to step in? Kid is killing it down in Triple A
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Not a lot of believers in Uggla early on, given the team he plays for. However, I agree, he shouldn't be available in a 10-team league. Dusty may be a little more kid-friendly this year, but I don't think he sacrifices Griffey for the next big thing.
Is it ever a good idea to drop a category that you are going to lose every week anyway (i.e. saves)?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
If you're winning games without one particular category, what difference does it make? Punting saves is perfectly acceptable. Why sacrifice other categories if, as you say, you're already going to be swimming heavily upstream in that one?
Thoughts on Jay Bruce--will he get playing time once he comes up?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
They are not going to call him up to twiddle his thumbs on the bench. If he gets the call, he'll play. If I were Corey Patterson, I'd be looking over my shoulder constantly.
JD (South Florida).
Hey, A.J. I'm in a deep AL-only 10-team league and I'm looking for a pitcher. Do you recommend anyone among Danks, Hochevar or Edwin Jackson? Danks' peripherals scare me and Jackson's ERA shot up (not counting his last start).
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Actually, I think Danks' peripherals are pretty good. I've got an article coming out today on Base Performance Value of pitchers, and Danks is in the Top-20. I really like him going forward.
What's your take on Nady and McClouth? Are they worth keeping or is it time to trade them?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I think Nate is definitely for real. Nady isn't bad either, but I worry that he's going to be on the block soon. The Pirates are bound to call up either Pearce or McCutcheon this summer, and that means either Bay or Nady will go. If X stays in Pittsburgh, I like him, but I'm not sold that he does.
AJ, you must not have heard the rumors of Griffey going to the Mariners because it seems like you didn't get the question by George in Philly. I think this is what he meant pretty much are they sending Griffey out to make room for Bruce to play which seems very logical and can get some money in return for Griffey if not prospects.
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
I've heard the rumors... but rumors don't equal reality. I find it hard to believe Griffey goes anywhere before hitting his milestone HR. And even though he's not the player he once was, Cincy's not going to trade him for nothing... Seattle's farm system might not be a match after all the Bedard unloading they did.
David (Frisco, Texas)
Carmona picked up another W yesterday but his command looked shaky. He is a good source for W's and ERA but with that walks issue I fear this is just a mirage. Would you trade him for Wang, Wainright, or Maine if given the opportunity?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Carmona is by far one of the worst pitchers with a sub-3 ERA I've ever seen. Given the opportunity, I'd trade him for any of the three, though Wainwright would be my preference.
Marty ( Balt)
AL only league. I dealt Verlander and Bonderman for Percival and D Cabrera, how did I fare?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Certainly, the Rays are now winning enough for Percival to have top-closer value. I'm not all that high on Cabrera, but since I've been down on Detroit pitching all season, I guess I can't quibble with what you got in return.
Rebecca (St Louis)
Is it too early to call Bedard the biggest bust of the season?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Just a tad, Rebecca. Perhaps he hasn't been lights out good, buthe's only really had the one awful outing.
In the staff rankings, how is Marcum and Lee ranked 49 and 50 among SP's? They are ranked below guys like Cueto, Blanton, Lilly. Are you guys serious?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
A) It's a compilation, not a consensus... we didn't sit in a room and discuss. B) April doesn't count in these rankings... it's from here going forward. For example, we thought Lee would finish 20-9 with a 3.20 ERA, that's 14-9 with a 4.00 ERA the rest of the way... not exactly stellar.
Hey AJ: No one is talking about Laffey in Cleveland. Is he a fluke??
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
He's no Cliff Lee. Seriously though, he's had one bad start, one good one... and one game where he was pitching with a 6-run lead after one. Let's build up a track record before we anoint him the second coming of Cliff.
Good morning, AJ! Real quick, take a flyer on Frank Thomas?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
You know what you're getting with Frank. .250-ish with a little pop. If that's better than what you've got now, by all means - take the flier. But that's what it is.
Any news on Tex in Atlanta?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
It wasn't anything out of the ordinary... he caught a throw at first base, and his back seized up. Seems to me to be one of those day-to-day things that will go away at its own undeterminable timetable.
Follow-up to Garza, you said he looks for real, meaning good ratios, decent shot at wins or a high-K pitcher? Doesn't look like the Ks are there yet.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
No, he's not a K guy and never has been. But he doesn't walk guys and with the team scoring close to 5 a night for him, he's going to get his share of wins.
Austin (Dallas, TX)
So buy-low on Tex? Would Big-Z and Garko for Tex and Burnett be a good trade, needs aside?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Hold your horses, there. Tex has missed all of one game this year. Not exactly stinking up the joint. But if you want to spin it that we don't know when he'll be back 100% and can unload Garko for him, I'd do it.
Do you see Soriano getting hot? if you do should i go and make a big deal for him?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Alfonso? Yes. Rafael? No.
Jack (Scranton, PA)
My DL is full and need to get rid of either Mark Mulder or Accardo. Do either of these guys have a chance of helping me this season?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I think Accardo is pretty much done, responsibility-wise. Mulder? I'd rather go with Vin Scully.
I have a pretty cluttered outfield right now. Holliday and Ichiro are full times, then a big logjam with Jason Bay, Moises Alou, Carlos Gomez and Jay Bruce all fighting for the final OF spot and Util spot. Assuming Bruce gets the call before June, how do you rank Bay, Alou, Bruce and Gomez from here on out?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Steals alone probably puts Gomez close to the top. Bay's probably second. I'd like to see Bruce play a bit before fully judging him, but I think the adjustment period will certainly be there.
Justin ( Boston )
Another DL roster question, who to drop to make room for Lackey out of Eveland, Lester, Wolf and Owings...thanks!
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I'd drop Lester. Though Wolf certainly is making that a difficult call with his recent few outings.
Nick (Greenwich, CT)
AJ! What's good man? I need a UTIL replacement for Furcal: Do u like Craig Monroe or Omar Vizuquel in a deep 16 Team League? Need Help! Speed is really not needed!
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
I do like Vizquel, at least for the short term. It appears the surgery took, and anytime a guy of his age can get a few months off, it's bound to make him fresher later on.
Garza's not a K guy? He throws 95 and K'd well over a guy per inning in the minors.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
And against major league hitting, he's well under 1 K per inning for his career, but close to 2-1 K/walks. I'm not planning to start Garza against minor leaguers anytime soon.
AL only league: Akinori Iwamura or Asdrubal Cabrera? (unfortunately, unassisted triple plays don't get counted in my league. very cool, though)
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
LOL. I like Akinori better than Asdrubal in the Spelling Bee Battle.
Name Game: Dana Eveland or Jonathan Sanchez?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Very close - well done! I'm going with Sanchez. Just has to keep the ball in the park a little better.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Time for one more, gang!
More name game: Lilly, Jurrjens, or Cueto?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
I like Jair best, especially with the veteran influence surrounding him. Cueto is second, though he's certainly going through some major growing pains.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Thanks, gang... that's all we have time for today. TMR should be up at 3pm. Have a great day!
