Amy Nelson (9:45 AM)
Guys we'll start the chat in about 20 minutes. Lots of Joba talk Pedro and anything else you want to discuss. We've got Stephen A. and Skip in the house so let me know what you've got to say
Amy Nelson (10:01 AM)
Hey guys i'm here and ready to start the chat.
Matt-Iowa
Can we just keep watching the Celts-Lakers finals matchups from the 80's instead of this matchup? It won't even come close to matching those games.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Is John Smoltz retiring?
Amy Nelson (10:02 AM)
There's an 11:30 press conference today. I think the likely scenario is that his career is over. Did you see him close the game the other night? He was sidearming and wincing...looked bad. It will be a shame if that's the case.
Carl (Texas)
It's going to be a sad day in Atlanta if Smoltz retires.
Amy Nelson (10:02 AM)
Indeed.
Pete (NY)
As a huge Mets fans, I've always hated the Braves. It looks as though Smoltz is calling it a season/career. This guy was unbelievable and if he does retire, I look forward to his HOF speech 5 years from now.
Brian (Madison, WI)
Congrats to the Big Unit on moving up the standings for strikeouts in his career.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
The Yankees are horrible, why is Joba even a big deal?
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Joba should have been moved into the rotation during the off-season. They are tinkering with a lights out end of game rotation that virtually guarantees victory after seven innings. It's a panic move that has been prompted by Steinbrenner and the team will pay the price in the long run because Kyle Farnsworth is not a good set up guy.
Amy Nelson (10:05 AM)
Good to see you back, Alonzo...,thought you'd weigh in on Smoltz..
Mark (Wisconsin)
John Smoltz is done for the the season I think, not for his career. Like Golic said though, it would be cool to see all three braves go into the HOF on the same ballot!
Richard (North Carolina)
I would hate to see Smoltz go out like this.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Maybe Maddux and Glavine will bail out after the season too, and they all go in together.
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
Good morning Amy, as a big Yankee fan it is much more important to me to see Joba step up in his press conference instead of the normal making excuses that we see all too often. This kid has the physical and mental talent to be great.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Randy Johnson has come a long way since those wild days in Montreal almost 20 years ago. Who would have thought he'd turn into a flame-throwing pitcher with control?
Tyler (Tucson, AZ)
I'm with Brian. As an Arizona fan , I think the ovation the Brewers fans gave Johnson was incredible.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Smoltz is done and I think so are the Braves this year. Far too many pitching injury and age issues to overcome. As a fan, I'm pretty frustrated with the franchise and cannot for the life of me understand why they'd resign Bobby Cox. Flip Saunders got fired for not winning the NBA title in three years. Bobby hasn't won a WS ring in almost 13!
Ryan (Atlanta)
I think it's a bigger story that Pedro threw well more than Joba blew up. If Pedro can toss more games like that the Mets can recover. If Joba is placed back into the middle reliever role, no one will really remember the 2 2/3rds innings of pure nerves.
Amy Nelson (10:07 AM)
Just for my take, i think the hype about Joba is ridiculous.. Sure the kid is good, but is he the next coming? Agree, Petey throwing well is huge for the Mets. As great a clubhouse guy as he is, he's even more effective there if he's throwing well. Even if you're not a Mets fan i find it hard to not root for Pedro.
Carl (Texas)
If Maddax, Smoltz, and Glavine all retire this year they should retire as Braves. It would be an awesome HOF ceremony.
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
Joba was a starter all his life, he is moving back to his natural position. He was kind of screwed over by having to get his pitch count up in the majors, rather than heading down to Trenton to get his pitch count up. He'll be fine, no worries here.
Sam (Indiana)
For your life, which of the big 3 Atlanta pitchers would you want pitching?
Amy Nelson (10:08 AM)
Great questions ... thoughts out there?
Sorin (West Cheser, PA)
I don't think Joba will change the fact that the Yankees have no hope of making the playoffs this year. The Orioles have a better pitching staff and better chot at the Wild Card.
Scott: (Park City, MT)
Joba's performance was to be expected wasn't it? the only one that wants him starting is the boss. the coach and gm have been against it and have caved in to hank's pressure.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
I think the concern over Joba is ridiculous. He's going to be a good to great starter come the end of the year. What are they going to do with their 7th and 8th inning relief?
Paul (Indianapolis, IN)
Joba is a great set up man, my Yanks need to groom him not to be a starter but to be the replacement for Rivera when he retires so the end of the bullpen always stays dominate. Fire Hank bring back George!!!!
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Joba has mental talent? What is "mental talent"? Is Joba going to medical school on his off days?
Flip Saunders (???)
Good morning, Amy. Do you need any help with this chat? I have nothing else to do today.
Amy Nelson (10:09 AM)
sure Flip. You're welcome here any time.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Did you bring your ear plugs for today's show Amy? Skip and Stephen A.? You're in for a long day of bickering.
Amy Nelson (10:09 AM)
Hah, a lot of desk banging perhaps?
Paul (Ft Worth)
If Joba's name was John Smith, he wouldn't be getting as much attention.
Dan M (Wilm DE)
who cares about Joba? let's talk about someone a little more relevant...Chase "the Dreamboat" Utley!!!!
Amy Nelson (10:10 AM)
it must be exciting to be a Phils fan these days, no?
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Sam: Smoltz in his prime hands down. He's a bulldog with a great post season record. He can dominate a game better than the other two ever could. That said, Glavine got them a WS ring with eight innings of one hit ball in the clincher.
Jeff (Ohio)
Bobby Cox is an institution in Atlanta. Flip took over a team that went to back-to-back finals and did much worse. Bobby Cox and Flip aren't in the same category.
Sorin (West Cheser, PA)
I'd take the mathemitician Grag Maddux. Look at his pre-season in San Diego! The guy is as calculating and cool as any pitcher I've seen in my lifetime.
Andrew (MN)
Well, we finally can put the Joba for president campaign to rest. The meiodcre reliever should just go back to the pen.
James (Long Beach, CA)
Amy, It made my evening to see Joba Chamberlain struggle the way he did. Personally, I think this kid is 75 percent hype, 25 percent talent. Sure he has nice stuff, but there are a number of other young, middle relievers who have put up even better numbers than Joba, but receive 5 percent of the hype he does. I personally can't wait to see him fall flat on his face.
Sorin (West Cheser, PA)
HAHAHA yeah, Skip. Steinbrenner is a spoiled Yankee fan. Welcome to Manhattan.
mike (dallas,texas
hey amy how are you
Amy Nelson (10:11 AM)
good thanks.
Carl (Texas)
This Joba hype is stupid. If he was with another team this wouldn't be news. This is just Yankee hype that's going to backfire sooner rather than later and he's going to get the blame for it.
Zack Keyes (Bracil, IN)
How bout the Cubs.. they are dominating
Richard (North Carolina)
Joba is not the second coming; and I never got the hype sorrounding him.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Just feed them a "Pedro Alvarez"
Amy Nelson (10:12 AM)
Nice, a loyal reader. Love it ...
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Amy, I'm still kind of numb over the Smoltz news. Today is going to be a rough one for Brave fans.
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
Well we havent received the news yet, we'll see what they say...
Kev (NYC)
Joba has under gone a lot of pressure and he's only 22. The way he handled it only contributes to the belief that he has the mental strength to deal with NY which will prove vital to a successful career. He came up as a starter, he can make a lot more money as a starter and he has 4 plus pitches. Making the move now may cost him and the Yankees this season to a degree, but ultimately every franchise wants that #1 starter and that's what he projects to be. The move is what it is today and we can see 5 years down the road if it turned out to be the right one. Until then, it's all speculation and premature.
Ivan (Cleveland,Oh)
2 innings equal brilliance?
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Maybe Mike Hampton will follow Smolt's lead and will finally hang it up too. Two years too late but at least he'd finally accept it.
Zack (Brazil, In)
Joba is a Bullpen Guy not a Starter,, The Yankees love to spend money, Why doent they just go get a starting pitcher?
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
The Yanks groomed Rivera ahead of Wetteland at the beginning of the late 90's dynasty. I remember it well because that duo crushed my Braves in 96'. They have that same scenario with Joba. They need to come to their senses and not fix what ain't broken.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Joba is more likely to be the second coming of Riveria than Clemens. And Riveria had 10 starts (and 9 relief appearances) in 1995 with a 5.51 ERA and a 5-3 record.
Pete C (Newark DE)
Hey Dan from Wilmington , Joba winning or losing in NYC is a bigger story then Chase anyday.
Dana (Jamestown, NY):
Give Joba a chance! Just because the media want to make him bigger than life, don't expect perfection every outing. Last I checked, every starter has good and bad outings. Why all the outcry over the first start for a 22 year old?
Mark (Wisconsin)
Amy, Could it be that Joba was just too hyped for his start? I believe it has happened to some greats. Also, having a pitch count of 65 to 70 never really allows him to get settled in because he knows with a big pitch count inning he comes out right away.
Sam (Indiana)
Yankees have to be careful with Joba...as a Cubs fan it still hurts every year when I hear Prior has to have surgery again.
Josh(Butler,TN)
Amy, There is no doubt in my mind that John Smoltz is a first ballot hall of famer? How about you?
Amy Nelson (10:19 AM)
yes.
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Stephen A. Smith says Atlanta is done. But they will have a lot of interest so long as Larry Wayne Jones is hitting above .400.
mike (dallas,tx)
John smoltz is a first ballet hall of famer. If he does retire make his spot in cooperstown
Matt-WI
That is the great thing about the Yanks, whether they are good or bad, they always make the headlines, just what they want. ps-Go Brewers!!!!!
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Amy, I thought you wore glasses? Where are they????
Amy Nelson (10:20 AM)
um, no. never. must be thinking about someoen else...
lorrell (los angeles)
the lakers will win the title easy the celtics are clearly this years patriots the big move to get to the big game and then... you kno the rest
Matt-Iowa
Amy, Who would take the most heat if Joba would blow out his arm? Would Hank fire himself???
Amy Nelson (10:20 AM)
um no. i dont think he's going to blow out his arm, it's whether or not he'll throw his breakign pitches and pitch effectivelt into the later innings...
Michael (Connecticut)
Amy, do you think Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine will all retire at the same time?
Amy Nelson (10:21 AM)
impossible to predict. but i think for most it'd be a dream scenario...
Kev (NYC)
It's funny we're talking about Joba ona day when the most infamous RP/SP will most likely retire. I wonder how much of an effect switching from relief to starter has on Smoltz's longevity.
Chris B (Westlake, CA)
Why aren't we talking about Jay Bruce?
Pete C (Newark DE)
In Joba's defense, I will say that the transition from the pen to Starter is like being a sprinter and running a marathon. Only Smotlz, a future hall of famer, made it really smoothly. Brett Myers , here in Philly is just getting back to form pacing himself. And on the other end, Woods struggled a little out the pen this year early and now is throwing every pitch like its the last one.
Sam (Indiana)
I don't think Maddux will ever retire...he doesn't need ball speed the way he pitches
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight Amy. How can they top Game 5? I want this one going seven with the Black & Gold taking it all.
Amy Nelson (10:23 AM)
i watched that game the other night, pretty awesome.
Zack Keyes (Brazil IN)
The Celtics are the better team, The Lakers have know way of stopping Pierce. He is going to be a very tough matchup for the Lakers.. Not to mention a guy named KG who will destroy Gasol and Odom
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
All due respect to Maddux Smolt and Glavine, but what exactly did the "Big 3" get Atlanta? 14 straight division titles? Guess being a Yankee fan holds me to higher standards
Joe (New Jersey)
Amy, what did you think of Pedro's performance last night?
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
thought it was pretty much best-case scenario for his first start. and an RBI!
Ray (Baltimore, MD)
Do you think injury to Big Brown is a hoax?
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
a hoax? no not at all. my rpoducer steve was at the track yesterady for a story and said the horse's hoof it completely split. i think it's sad, to be honest.
Jeff (Ohio)
Infamous? That's if your famous for negative reasons. Smoltz isn't infamous. And I think that Eck might be more famous than Smoltz. He wasn't as good a starter but he was probably a better reliever.
jake (Rockford)
Steaven A Is sooo blinded By his New York attitude, that he named 6 different teams in the national league that will compeate for the national league. And not one of those teams named was the CUBS,Come On Steaven A,Its clear that the cubs are the team to beat not just in the national league, but all of MLB.GIVE THEM THERE DUE RESPECT!
Dana (Jamestown, NY):
Jay Bruce is a great talent, but give the NL a few times around to figure him out. He'll be a really good player, but don't be surprised when he cools off.
brice (new york)
boston will win the title this year lakers dont stand a chance boston has the better team lakers only got kobe you cant just one a title with one good player it is a team effort
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Isn't 9 p.m. kind of late to be starting every game for the NBA Finals?
Amy Nelson (10:25 AM)
you've got to think about the west coast, too...
Sorin (West Cheser, PA)
Matt Kemp would have totally taken Torrealba ina street fight.
Amy Nelson (10:25 AM)
good call...
Joba Chamberlain (NY, NY)
Hey, yesterday was pretty good. Benji screwed me over in that first inning, causing a run to score. Other than that, I thought I looked pretty solid.
Jeff (Iowa)
Wow, Chris, your idea of reality is really distorted. Are you kidding me? 14 straight division titles? That is amazing.
mike(dallas,Tx)
I thinks its unfair to say joba was a failure. It was only his first start if at the end of the season he only has 1 win the u can say he is only a reliver.
Chris (East Lansing)
Don't automatically assume Smoltz is going to retire. Season ending surgery, ok, but he is a pro and a fighter who will want to come back for more. Remember when Alonzo Mourning went down and we said he'd call it a career, well, he wants back because like Smoltz he is hungry to play.
Amy Nelson (10:27 AM)
i don't know, jayson stark had a column the other day where Smoltz sounded like this might be it if he can't come back...
Farley (Denver)
How about that fight in LA last night! The Rockies can't play baseball, but I think Torrealba at least won that fight.
Kev (NYC)
I am making it a huge point to watch Game 6 in its entirety. No matter what "dream" matchup the NBA has, the heart and desire of the individual players can never matchup to those of the NHL. The NBA is not a team league. This series is pretty much Kobe/Gasol vs KG/Pierce. Nobody really knows inidvidual star power in the NHL because you need 4 lines to compete. That's the biggest difference as to why NHL playoffs are more enticing than the NBA.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Brice -- clearly you are trying to jinx the Celtics. You can't possibly believe that L.A. is a one-man team.
Evan (Daytona Beach,FL)
In my heart i hope Boston wins, but something says the lakers are the better team.
Secretariat (Horse Heaven)
Amy, please explain to these people how dominant I was. I would kick the crap out of Big Brown
Supa (NC)
Damn shame Amy! So why cant the horse association cant stop Big Brown from running in the race?
Amy Nelson (10:28 AM)
with the money involved? and the triple crown? yeah right!
Whit(Brooklyn,NY)
How can the Lakers lose? They have young Mike and bootleg Scottie. The Celtics have young Malone,Young Dominique, and young Reggie.Who won the rings?
Kevin Cols, Ohio
Amy, YOU ROCK!! Do you think Joba would have stayed where he was had it not been for Hank getting involved and throwing mess to the whole seen?
Amy Nelson (10:28 AM)
yes.
Chris (East Lansing)
I'm tired of people complaining about start times for playoff games. Yes, it makes sense for the west coast. Yes, it means a midnight bedtime for the east coast. But is it every day all year long? No! It's a special time of the year and staying up late and doubling up on the coffee in the morning is an acceptable fee to enjoy sport. It adds to the fun, stay up late, go to work in the morning tired, and discuss the game and how exhausted you are.
Jeff (Ohio)
No way Smoltz is going to come back next year. He's hurt, he's 40, and he definetely has his priorities straight. He doesn't want to wake up in pain everyday for the rest of his life.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Smoltz is the kind of guy that won't come back if he is not 100% effective. He cares too much about his teammates.
Tom (Chicago)
I disagree about the NBA Finals. If there is one sport where having the best player means more than having the best team, it's basketball. And don't forget about Pau in LA.
Mark (Cleveland, OH)
Why is First Take's lead stories about overrated Joba and over-the-hill Pedro when the NBA finals are a day away and the NHL finals is taking an epic turn?
Amy Nelson (10:30 AM)
because we've been talking about those all week, and the baseball stories happened last night.
Supa (NC)
Hey Amy, why is ESPN killing me with replays of the old finals of the '80s between Boston and LA? The past is in the past!
Amy Nelson (10:31 AM)
i'm osrry i think it's so cool (i also grew up watching the celtics) but i think it's cool to watch those classic games.
Richard (NC)
Do the Penguins have a chance Amy?
Amy Nelson (10:32 AM)
i'm not goign to proclaim myself a hockey expert, but i do wonder how their legs will feel. it seemed that detroit was controlling their zone much more in all the OTs, just look at the shots on goal...we'll see,. i'm sure that arena will be hopping.
Ivan (Cleveland,Oh)
it would be awesome if they played the finals in those 80's shorts
Jeff (Ohio)
I'd take Kobe/Gasol over KG/Piece anyday. Throw in the super-deep Lakers bench and the fact that Doc Rivers can't manage a rotation to save his life and this one has Lakers in 5 all over it.
Hank, NY Yankees
I just wanna say I made the phone call to the dugout to pull Joba.
Chris (East Lansing)
Good call Johnny. I came of age during the Atlanta years...I just can't imagine baseball without Smoltz out there. The Superstation implanted him into my brain during the 90's. Darn you Ted Turner and your media savvy!
Tom (Chicago)
Tell Dana I am very jealous she's going to game 6 of the NHL Finals...
Michael (Connecticut)
If I were a member of the Yankees staff, I'd re-evaluate my position on Joba.
Evan (Daytona Beach,FL)
Beating the Red Wings in 2nd overtime, shows you that they have a chance.
DAN (NEW JERSEY)
I AGREE WITH AMY I THINK WATCHING THE OLD 80'S GAMES IS COOL...THOSE GAMES ARE CLASSICS
corey (louisiana)
that classic games on nostalgic for many people, it's great to see how much different the game was played back then
Sam (Indiana)
I loved watching the classic finals games yesterday. There were 7 hall of famers on the court at one point and everyone played the "right way" as Larry Brown would put it.
Chris (East Lansing)
Supa, that's exactly the attitude that most of the young NBA players have, and that's why the game has become a look-at-me-league. The past is what provided them their opportunity, and our opportunity to watch Kobe tomorrow night.
Pete C (Newark DE)
I have not seen Big Brown live, but I say Afleet Alex and Barbarolive and they where great. But Big Brown is a machine horse, he will not fall to another horse under ideal conditions.
Paul (Indianapolis, IN)
Can we please bring back George Steinbrenner before his son ruins this great franchise? Even George knew if it isn't broke don't fix what works, fix what isn't working.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Amy, I know you watched that great NHL playoff game the other night. That was better than anything the NBA could ever dish out. I'll be so happy when basketball season is finally over. They can hype this matchup all they want but it isn't Bird v Magic. You'll see a minimum of three blowouts in the series and in the end, it won't live up to the hype.
Supa (NC)
Who is going to hold Kobe? NOBODY!
Kev (NYC)
Amy, Game 5 had the highest ratings since '02 and that was a Monday night. If this thing goes 7, what;s the odds that's the greatest TV rating ever and a great sign for the NHL?
Amy Nelson (10:36 AM)
hmmm not sure about that, depends on what happens in game 6 obviously
Michael (Connecticut)
maybe Soulja Boy Supa...lol
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Chris: I miss the Ted Turner Braves days. We lost the Superstation here so I don't get to watch them any more. Smoltz was always my favorite of the Big Three.
Pete C (Newark DE)
The Pens have a little momentum right now, I thinkl enough to take game 6, but history disagrees, I think I heard a stat that said The Wings are 12-0 in game 6's when they are up 3-2...
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
I am a casual hockey fan and I watched game 5 because I figured Detroit would close it out. However, that game was awesome and I was locked to the tube. It is still saved on my DVR. If the NHL can get back to this level on a consistent basis then the league does have a chance to grow its fan base.
Christopher (San Antonio)
As a Red Sox fan, I still love Pedro. I will root for him every fifth day, and hope the Mets lose when he isn't pitching. Great shot of his reaction after the RBI!
Random Fact (Of the Day)
Joba Chamberlain threw the same amount of pitches as his number on his jersey, 62. How ironic!!!
Tom (Chicago)
The Red Wings have given up one goal total in their last two game 6's this year, and scored 7. The Cup goes back to Detroit tonight.
Carl (Texas)
The Big Three will turn into the Wee Three. Lakers win the NBA Title in 5 or 6 games.
Justin (Halifax, PA)
Is there gonna be any discussion (today or tomorrow) about the baseball draft?
Lou (NY, NY)
This Thursday is the amateur baseball draft. When do you think that players like Vanderbilt's, and New York's own, Pedro Alvarez will have an effect in the Major Leagues.
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
just did a story on Pedro Alvarez for our web site yestreday. Great kid, great story. Look for him to go to the Pirates at No. 2...
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
I think Beckham will be No.1 to the Rays.
Seabiscuit (Compton)
Big Brown may get the triple crown, but big whoop! Is he going to have an oscar winning screenplay written about his life? Didn't think so.
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
Thought you were in Horse Heaven , seabiscuit? Now it's compton?
Farley (Denver)
I think the Wings will win tonight. They are just too good and I dont think Fluery can have another game like he did in game 5.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
I think the coolest trophy in all of sports is the Stanley Cup. That's the only reason I'll be watching tonight -- to see Detroit skate around the ice with that fine piece.
Seth (York, PA)
Forget about the starters, has anyone noticed how horrible the middle relief has been since they can't use Joba in the 7th and 8th anymore. This move has already cost them one game to Minn on Monday.
DAN (NEW JERSEY)
if they got the nhl off of versus network i believe more people would watch it
Brian (Lake Orion, Mi)
I couldn't agree more Johnny w/ the NBA they don't play all out until the last bit of the game and even then players semm lax in their play The NHL is all out all game
Kevin, Horn Lake, MS
Why is there so much attention on the Joba while you have the Cubs Marmol that's doing better?
zach(ny)
Joba should have been taking notes last night from Roy Halladay on how to bounce back after a rough inning rather than sulking and acting dejected and overly emotional as he always does.
Levi (minn.)
the baseball draft isn't good at all cuz the soonest we see the drafted players is what 2 or 3 years b4 they get to MLB level. Are my messages getting through someone just say my name if it is.
Seth (York, PA)
I can't believe the Rays have another first pick in the draft. They are going to be good for a while with all their young talent. Just hope they can afford to keep them before the Yanks lure them away with their checkbook.
Wildfire (Hollywood)
Ha! Big Brown is nothing. I have my own TV series.
Secreatariat (Horse Heaven)
That was me that posted earlier, Amy. You should recognize greatness when you see it.
Christopher (San Antonio)
College baseball doesn't get the coverage that other college sports gets, so we don't really know the future stars of the sport. Why does women's college basketball get more coverage than college baseball?
Amy Nelson (10:44 AM)
jsut teh way it is...i'm shocked it's even being televised, i guess it's baby steps.
Jeff (Ohio)
Because Marmol will always be a reliever and Joba was a 1st round phenom starter who blew people away this year and last year and is now converting back to starter.
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
amy amy, the rays have to take fsu catcher buster posey...this kid has only been catching for a little over a year, yet he is a monster, the rays need serious help behind the plate
Jake (Syracuse)
Joba plays for the Yankees, thats why he's talked about more than Marmol
philip purdie (GREENVILLE NC)
I KNOW THEY JAYS WERE LICKING THERE CHOPS LAST NIGHT. HALLADAY VERSUS A PITCHER ON A 60-70 PITCH COUNT, AND AN INEFFECTIVE BULLPEN. IT WAS OVER BEFORE THE FIRST PITCH
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
Good morning Amy, as a big Yankee fan it is much more important to me to see Joba step up in his press conference instead of the normal making excuses that we see all too often. This kid has the physical and mental talent to be great.
Eagan, MN
How are the Cubs not getting talked about more?! They are the hottest team in SPORTS, yet they are mentioned in passing on Espn...any ideas why?
Amy Nelson (10:45 AM)
ozzie's getting more pub that the cubs right now
Levi (minn.)
Amy who u got in the NBA finals.
Amy Nelson (10:46 AM)
the c's of course...
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Shouldn't the Lakers and Celtics wear the throwbacks with the hot pants tomorrow night?
Amy Nelson (10:46 AM)
im with you...
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Is ESPN televising the MLB Draft again? I hope not.
Amy Nelson (10:47 AM)
yeah, why what's wrong with that???
Jon (Scottsdale, AZ)
So what Detroit Piston starter is getting traded?
Amy Nelson (10:47 AM)
thoughts anyone?
Chris B (Westlake, CA)
Taking a catcher is quick sand, a big no no that can be a big missed opportunity
Dana (Jamestown, NY):
It will take more than a good first half for people to buy into the Cubs. They have a history of finding ways to blow it.
Zack (Brazil, In)
I dont like the 2-3-2 setup for the finals. The team with home court advantage should play 3 at home before the other team
tucson, AZ
I feel bad for the NBA since the Lakers are going to get swept in the Finals. There is no way this series will live up to the hype. I need to invest in a sports bar in Boston!
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Rasheed has got to go. I'd keep Prince because of his defensive skills and overall team play. I'd move Billups as well. Stuckey appears ready to take over. I'd be inclined to keep Rip though.
Ryan (NC)
As a counter-argument for the Detroit trading players, I guess they probably won't trade any of them as they've had their heads in the sand so long I'm not sure they'll have a reasonable market stance on them.
Seth (York, PA)
I disagree, Baltimore's catcher phenom Matt Wieters is living up to his hype. You will see him by September.
Sam (Indiana)
I'd say Rasheed. His attitude nearly cost him a game in the playoffs with all those technicals.
Carl (Texas)
I heard that Dumars was trading all of them. Even he knows the window is shut.
Michael (Glenside, PA)
Normally I would agree Stephen A. Smith over Skip on alot of topics, but when it comes to the Mets being the best in the NL, I think he's crazy. The Mets don't have the mental skills to win the NL, or the NL east. This is the Phillies divison, & I think they will run away with it. Then they will beat the Cubs to win the NLCS.
Tom (Chicago)
If it's possible, I think Rasheed is gone. His meltdowns are causing too many problems. And I think Prince is probably gone too.
Kev (NYC)
Sheed to the Mavs for a 2nd rounder & Stackhouse.
Blake (St. Louis, MO)
Billups is traded first. He's past his so-called "prime." Too injury prone, and not enough production.
Ryan (NC)
I bet Billups and Sheed are gone from Detroit. Billups is a non-leading leader, and Sheed is one of the easiest players to dislike in the NBA.
Matt-Iowa
Amy, Any idea on where BJ Hermsen will go in the draft? I live in the area of his school and everyone is wondering, your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!
Amy Nelson (10:53 AM)
just asked a talent evaluator and he said he wasn't "a high guy" ... though dont know where he projects
Levi (MN)
Prince can't go he is one of the most underrated BASKETBALL player in the league.
Brian (Lake Orion,Mi)
if anyone it well be Rasheed. When he is in he is great but He disappears to much especially in the playoffs. The pistons really need a true big man in the middle the would of been unstoppable.
dylan (fla)
I say billups stuckey is way better now theh mr. bigshot.
Joe (Lancaster, PA)
Selecting a catcher with your first pick is a bad idea??? Tell that to the Twins and Joe Mauer
Scott (Phoenix AZ)
How can Stephen A Smith say that Kobe has never cheated us? Did he forget game 7 against the Suns a few years ago when he refused to shoot and quit on his team and basically tanked game 7.
Barney (Mayberry)
I say this is the start of a gradual rebuilding process for the Pistons. They will be towards the bottom of the East in a few years, but will get some players in future drafts and eventually return to glory.
Mike, NY
Nobody is going to take Rasheed for what he's worth. At best, that could turn into a first-rounder for the Pistons. If I were running the show over there, I'd be working towards the draft. It seems that Dumars has come out and suggested there's a rebuilding project going on, and we all know any effective rebuilding project needs draft picks.
Joe (New Jersey)
oh please..the pistons will never be at the bottom of the east..they changed coaches not players..The pistions will still be at the top of the East with the same group of players..none of the players are getting traded anyway so they will remain a dominant force
Supa (NC)
The Celtics are going down like Hillary Clinton!
Levi (MN)
Mauers overrated. This comin from a MN guy. It is a bad idea to go catcher first always, for so many reasons that everyone probably knows.
Joe (Lancaster, PA)
Lakers in 4-5...David Stern will be severely disappointed in the "Matchup of a Lifetime"
Chris (East Lansing)
I don't think the Pistons will ever be "rebuilding" with Joe Dumars, we will be more "retooling" We'll be a playoff team, as Maxiell and Stuckey coupled with 2 of our big 4 can beat most East teams 2 out of 3 times.
Obama (NY)
Since im the next president i say Lakers in 5
Amy Nelson (11:02 AM)
i know you're a big ESPN fan Obama, thanks for your prediction.
Joe (Lancaster, PA)
Penguins have a leg up on the Red Wings now and will force a game 7 tonight in front of the crowd in Pittsburgh...Penguins win game 7 and Fleury is MVP
Jay (NC)
This sucks about Smoltz, coming from a Yankees fan, he's one of the most likeable pitchers I have ever been lucky enough to watch. I hope his HOF career doesn't end with last nights blown save!
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Joe Dumars messed up. He picked Darko over Bosh, D-Wade, and Melo. That is a decision he will regret because it cost the Pistons multiple championships.
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
I agree with all those saying that catchers are hit and miss, but this is the same reason why I am so high on Buster Posey (FSU) for the Rays. The kid just started catching last year! His knees are in great shape, and in all honesty, he can truly play anywhere.
Amy Nelson (11:03 AM)
as he proved in a game this season!
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Smoltz once pitched here in Macon for the Class A team during a rehab assignment. Every Brave fan within a 100 mile radius must have come out to see him pitch. It was wonderful tribute to a great athlete and person. He is a guy who needs to be celebrated. It would be good to see a good guy get pub after this whole Clemens mess.
Josh (Asheville, NC)
Amy, any word of how many of the Lakers & Celtics greats from back in these two rivalaries will be in attendance?
Amy Nelson (11:05 AM)
no but great question, i do wonder. i'm sure the c's will try and bring as many back as possible, how cool would that be?
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
The AJC is reporting season ending surgery for Smoltz. Yeah, its the end of the road.
Ryan (NC)
Smoltz is probably going to go ahead and call it a career, I like Smoltz - nothing wrong with heading to the beach, catching some sun and just relaxing while his name marches into Coopertown.
ken kaniff (ct)
all 9 positions and a grand slam
Damon (Burlington,VT)
Jon Ogden retires after 13 seasons. A good man and great player. Good luck to him.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Amy, is it just me, or is the young talent from the past five years had more instant effect on MLB than any generation in baseball for say, the past 30 years?
Amy Nelson (11:06 AM)
dont know the numbers, but look at the '05 draft alone. and teams are clearly going in the young direction
Dain (Los Angeles)
i would love to see magic and bird seating by by each other
Amy Nelson (11:07 AM)
i covered magic's induction in the HOF and there was a q&a session with he and bird. one of the coolest things ive ever covered...
Christopher (San Antonio)
But can Posey pitch to himself like Bugs Bunny?
Mike (Parker, Co)
So what are those reasons for not taking a catcher 1st??? Levi, are you mad that he stole your girlfriend? Do you hate his sideburns? He (Mauer) is one of the 5 best catchers right now in MLB. He probably is the best catcher the Twins have ever had. Levi, go root for the Brewers or someone else.
Justin (FL)
bird already said he won't be there but he will watch every game.
Amy Nelson (11:10 AM)
i think that's lame. if magic can show up, why not larry?
Chris (East Lansing)
I say for games 1-2, Magic and Bird show up wearing Indiana/MSU garb, and then games 3-7 they were Boston/LA jerseys. Get Larry a wig for the old days.
Brian (Lake Orion,Mi)
I wish atheletes were more like the old days when they really hated each other. i hate all this hugging before and after the game. a true hatred for your opponent make great tv and sport moments. lakers-celtics, Red Sox-yankees, Red wings- avalanche,wolverines-buckeyes, all great rivals all fueled by hatred for each other
Jay (NC)
Bugs Bunny would be an NL player, since he can both pitch and hit.
Mark (NJ)
Pierce shuts down Kobe. Lakers Loose in 6. The End.
Carl (Texas)
I loved the old school games. Kevin McKale clothesline somebody and just gets called for a foul. That's real basketball and I believe that we'll never see that again because people like to cry about being touched these days.
Ryan (Anthony Wayne High School)
The Wolverines and Buckeyes will always hate each other
Ryan (Anthony Wayne High School)
they would get mobbed by cameras and interviews they would probably rather stay home
Dain (Los Angeles)
i've always looked a magic as a more media friendly, more accesible guy than larry
Amy Nelson (11:13 AM)
because he's always been!
Jake (Syracuse)
Rasheed is the easy scapegoat, they didnt score enough to win, deal with it and stop jumping on his back.
Chris (East Lansing)
To be honest, I'm not sure why Joe D doesn't give Michael Curry a chance to win with this team in tact. I know the timing might be right to make trades, especially with Sheed's contract, but I really think Flip was at least 50% of the problem.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
Why not have one of those halftime shows at the TD Banknorth Garden for Game 1: '87 Celtics -- Parrish, McHale, Bird, Max and Ainge, with some Walton -- vs. Lakers -- Kareem, Magic, Scott, Rambis, etc.
Justin (FL)
there's a difference between hatred and respect. those guys back in the day, they hated each other DURING THE GAME, not at all times. they always respected each other. in fact, hate is too strong of a word in the first place. dislike is a better word. you don't have to like your oponent, but you do have to respect him/her at all times. that is the essence of competition, but these days that point is oft-ignored in favor of hype and ratings.
Amy Nelson (11:15 AM)
good point justin
Ryan (NC)
Sheed is the scaregoat because he fits the two major criteria to be a scapegoat: bad attitude and overrated
Ryan (Pittsburgh)
If Flip didn't want to play the young players and he's gone, why not get someone in there that wants to and stay with the team they have, if it doesn't work after next season, then make big changes
Eric (Murrieta, CA)
I've meet Smoltz, he's a big Michigan State Spartan fan...I wish him the best of luck...hopefully I'll see him at a football game or two this year.... GO WINGS!! They will melt the Igloo tonight...enjoy the game Dana!
Tom (Chicago)
I doubt I'll watch that much of the NBA Finals. Basically every time a player misses a shot, they are looking at the ref because they want a foul. When an NBA game takes 3 hours, there are too many whistles.
MATT (PRINCETON)
Is there even any debate at this point that Utley is the best player in the NL if not baseball?
Mark/nj
Flip is the Marty Shchotinheimer (sure thats spelled wrong) of the NBA. He cant win in the playoffs.
Josh (Texas)
What's the point of firing Flip? If you have the same team with a new coach what make you think that the Pistons are gonna go to the Finals next year? Just because they're in the JV league doesn't mean they will get a free pass to the Finals like the fans believe they got. They should have kept Larry Brown there. At least he won you guys a ring.
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
Amy: Josh Hamilton!
Chad (Cedar Falls, IA)
Sheed sin't just a scapegoat. He packed it in the last part of the series, no question about it. His attitude caused more problems than were let on inside that locker room.
Jack ( Detroit )
Pistons will not rebuild under Dumars, If you're going to comment on the Pistons at least follow the team !!! Bottom of the East..hahaha thats what Cleveland will be doing after Lebron leaves that dump
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
This is the exact reason why college sports is better than professional sports. Ohio State and Michigan don't hug before games, they genuinely dislike each other. Duke and North Carolina don't pick each other up. With free agency and trades today, there is no team competitiveness in professional sports, only one-on-one issues.
Carl (Texas)
I don't agree with Flip getting fired but then again I don't see any teams in the East that can keep up with them except for Boston.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Before the end of game 6 in 1987 Kareem went over to the Celtic bench and shook hands with KC Jones, Chris Ford and Jimmy Rogers. A great, respectful gesture. They hated each other on the court but they always respected one another. But I have to wonder what its like betweenRambis and McHale when they see each other nowadays.
Ryan (Anthony Wayne High School)
Utley is the best player in all of baseball and Jay Bruce is just on fire
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Utley is great but Chipper is the best NL player right now. He cannot be pitched to.
Dain (Los Angeles)
Terell Owens deserves that contract! he is the best receiver in football, he is the most balanced receiver in the league
Justin (FL)
pistons don't need to rebuild! jeez, they were one game away from the finals! they need a player or two more, thats all. nothing wrong with billups or hamilton, or prince. wallace, maybe. but they are very close...
Chris (East Lansing)
He might be outspoken, but A Smith sure knows his roundball.
Dom (New York)
Detroit needs a go to guy. Why blame Wallace?? When has he ever carried a team??
Carl (Texas)
Aw come on First Take. Keep Stephen A. and Skip yelling at each other. It's great TV.
Brian (Lake Orion,Mi)
the differnce between T.O. now and T.O. in phillie is that he is buying into the coaches and actually has found a quaterback he likes. the eagles were right in not signing him to a big contract he was a cancer in their locker room. he has been a good teammate in dallas since the tuna left
Jeff (Gilbert, AZ.)
Tell Skip not to worry too much, the San Antonio Sterns will get it next year. The deal with the devil states every other year!
Sir Varge, New York
Amy should Big Brown have an asterisk next to his name if he wins the Triple Crown since he's using steroids like Barry Bonds?
Amy Nelson (11:26 AM)
well at least with bonds it's alleged, with big brown we know for a fact he's getting heavy doses of winstrol...
Joe W. (Farmville, VA)
Dallas brings out the "Star" in everyone. Philly is where you go to get booed - just look at St. Nick.
Jonathan Rising Fawn Ga
Huge Braves Fan but Chipper cannot play near the defense that Utley does Thats why he should win the MVP
Terrence raleigh
Stephen is right T.O isn't the reason why the cowboys loss I believe Romo fumbled the snap agnaist the Seahawks not T.O
Josh (Texas)
The Spurs will never see wnother title for a long time. The NBA took the 1st step in punishing floppers now with the fines. When they start giving techinal fouls for it the Spurs will not go anywhere.
Matthew (NC)
MVP? Its early June!
Pete C (Newark DE)
But Winstrol is legal in the sport, I bet next year it may not be, but these things in Horse racing go back as long as they have raced for money. It not something that the other trainer can't use. Most do.
DAN (NJ)
ARE STEROIDS ILLEGAL IN HORSE RACING? I HEARD SOMEWHERE THEY WERE NOT .IN BONDS CASE THEY ARE.
Amy Nelson (11:29 AM)
each state is different ny state you can use them
Josh, WI
Big Brown is definitely on steroids??
Amy Nelson (11:29 AM)
yep
Clay Davis (Baltimore, MD)
Can I get a little love here?
Amy Nelson (11:29 AM)
always clay, always
mike from cincinnati
I'll give the philly fans credit for cheering griffey last night even though had he hit his 600th he would have tied the game.
Pete C (Newark DE)
But the Major states allow it, and most train in states that allow it, but since the Eight Belles situation, it has shade light on those less talked about aspects for the horse racing....
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
If I'm not mistaken, Chipper had the best 3B fielding pct. in the league last year. He ain't no Brooks Robinson but he gets the job done. Don't get too enamored with the Utley home runs, that will stop but Chipper has a legit chance to threaten .400 with Teixiera, McCann and Francoer hitting behind him.
chris (milwaukee)
it's not attitude with sheed it's his passion for the game that causes the most problems for him.
Dom (New York)
Once they start fining floppers some players might as well have theri paychecks written out to Stern
DAN (NJ)
amy, so if there able to use them why hold that against them..im not sayin its right but if they have a problem with it change the rules.
Amy Nelson (11:34 AM)
john smoltz ppress conference right now...
Jesse ((Albany, NY))
i would say chipper has a real legitimate chance at hittin .400 chances are he will get hurt for a chunk of the season to lower his at bats and give him more of a shot at it
Mike (Brooklyn)
Utley has a MUCH better chance of hitting 50 HRs than Chipper does at hitting .400. Chipper never batted higher than .340. Virtual lock he doesn't hit .400.
Ryan (Pittsburgh)
Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux all inducted in the Hall of Fame together?
Matthew (NC)
Sad news about Smoltz. The ultimate warrior. Wouldn't count him out for 2009...
Bubba (Grand Rapids)
Big Blow for the Braves get well Smoltz.
Seth (South Korea)
Are we seriously talking about Horse Racing??? Who cares!!! Let's talk about something that really matters, like rowing...
Joe (Lancaster, PA)
Chipper will hit .400...Utley will not be this good the entire season
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
You have to figure at some point pitchers start working around both Chipper & Utley though. Neither one may hit those lofty goals of either the 50 HRs or the .400 average.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
For a closer like Smoltz, who was virtually unhittable as a closer, to have shoulder surgery this late in his career, it would be an injustice to see him come back and struggle. Hang up the cleats John!
Pete C (Newark DE)
John Smoltz, my hat goes out to you. What a work horse, what a champion. He is no that special level of competitors that are few and far between. Realy team player too. Doing whatever he has to do for the better of the team. Thats why he is the only one of the Big three to go the distance with the Braves.
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
it sounds like he's still hloding it open that he wont retire
Zack (Gainesville)
Can u say future pitching coach?
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
or future golf pro?
Josh (Butler,TN)
Amy, breaking news smoltz is having season ending surgey?
Amy Nelson (11:38 AM)
um, no. that'd be the atlanta papers...smoltz is on tv right now
Amy Nelson (11:38 AM)
"i've pulled off a lot of miracles ... i look forward to see if i can extend it."
Amy Nelson (11:38 AM)
smoltz..."I tried to retire in '99 -- in fact i did -- until i was talked out of it"
Chris (East Lansing)
Bring Smoltzy back to East Lansing, future AD.
Seth (York, PA)
Smoltz would make an outstanding coach.
mike from cincinnati
HE will go golfing he is scratch golfer he might even try to get on pga tour, if michelle wie can get a sponsors exemption why couldnt smoltz?
Bob (East Lansing, MI)
Smoltz, we still love you up here in Lansing. Stop by some tailgates in the fall and we'll help you get better while you cheer on your favorite college.
Matt (Cincy)
It sounds to me like he just can't admit that it's over, and I mean no offense when saying that.
Pete C (Newark DE)
Amy, what's John Handy cap, I didn't know he golfed?
Amy Nelson (11:40 AM)
im not sure but i know it's very very very good. some say he could be on tour
Kevin Cols, Ohio
Didn't sound like a man that is ready to walk away. He will be back if he is able to pitch effectively. If not, he will walk away. HOF'er for sure!!!
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
I think at his age, this might be it for Smoltzie. In any case, he should be seen as one of the best ever.
Seth (York, PA)
I know most people think us Philly fans are heartless, but even a Phillies fan such as myself hate to see a player like Smoltz possible hang it up, even if the phillies would benefit from it.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
I hope he does retire rather than go through the agony of surgery and a comeback. The guy has given Atlanta and MLB everything he had in the tank. Walk away proud John and make your reservations for Cooperstown in 5 years!
mike from cincinnati
last i heard amy he is scratch golfer.
Giovanni (Boston, MA)
That would be sweet, seeing John Smoltz show up Sergio Garcia
Joe (Lancaster, PA)
Stephen A just brought up a good point....its amazing that the big 3 of Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz only had one World Series win in those years but we can put them in the hall of fame without second guessing...Smoltzy will pitch at least one more year
Josh (Asheville, NC)
It will be sad day to see Smoltz walk away, especially like this. He was the last of the orgional Braves that started the Braves domination of the National League.
Christopher (San Antonio)
What a year this could be for MLB. Smoltz, Shilling, Pedro, Randy Johnson, all calling it quits before the start of the 09 season. What a group of pitchers!
Amy Nelson (11:43 AM)
thats a good point. we'll see what happens...
Sir Varge, New York
Amy, the list of guys who have come back from shoulder surgery is very short. And let's not forget how Smoltz's age factors into this. He's probably done. Look at how shoulder surgery has affected guys like Jaret Wright and Mark Mulder. Neither has come back from that.
Tom Glavine (Atlanta, GA)
Nothing wrong with hanging on too long....
Amy Nelson (11:44 AM)
whoah, harsh!
Ryan (Pittsburgh)
I don't think it matters who you are a fan of, you have to respect what this man has accomplished no matter which team you cheer for
Joe (New Jersey)
I strongly believe Smoltz will pitch next season..he wants to still pitch and help contribute to the Braves..If he his healthy enough he will continue to pitch.
MATT (PRINCETON)
Philly fans gave Maddux a standing ovation the other week and Im sure they would do the same for Smoltz
Dain (Los Angeles)
i dont think randy or pedro will call it quits this year no matter what
Rob (Bostonia)
Pedro is the only true Hall of Famer on that list...maybe Randy too
chris (milwaukee)
if he does come back i hope he's able to perform better than Kerry Woods
Christopher (San Antonio)
If that happens, how much would tickets be to their inductions into Cooperstown? I would love to be at that induction!
Dave (Chicago)
I wish I could retire as young as Smoltz. I would do everything I would love to do and money is no issue for him, either. So don't mourn, people. If Smoltzie retires, he's had a great ride.
Jack (CA)
Both pedro and randy will make hall of fame
Amy Nelson (11:49 AM)
easily
Josh (Butler,TN)
Smoltz said in his conference "Im not making any decisions yet".
Zack (Gainesville )
Who ever thought we would see Smoltz retire before Bobby Cox?
Rob (Bostonia)
Why do people always feel bad for the players when they get hurt or retire? They have no real emotions for you, they only care about themselves. I say fans do the same. You can feel bad about someone leaving, only because you'll miss seeing them play. Don't worry about them personally, its just dumb.
Doug (Boston)
I say any pitcher who made it through the steroids/HR era of baseball who has even remotely close to Hall of Fame numbers should be an absolute lock.
Amy Nelson (11:50 AM)
you think pitchers didn't juice? they did just as much as the hitters...
Christopher (San Antonio)
Rob, you are clueless. Maybe Randy? Didn't he just acheive the 2nd most strikeouts of ANY pitcher, ever? Smoltz, one of two players in history with 150+ wins and saves. Shilling is one of the most dominating pitchers, especially in the postseason, of his era, ask the Yankees. Pedro, enough said!
Joe (Seattle)
Amy, will you please come to Seattle to run the Mariners? You clearly know more about baseball than Bavasi. He has no clue what he's doing.
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
sorry joe, rough year there in seattle so far...
Dain (Los Angeles)
but is juicing for pitchers as effective as it is for hitters in terms of performance ?
Amy Nelson (11:52 AM)
very much so, and for recovery especially
Chris (Plainsboro, NJ)
Amy, just wanted to thank you for another enjoyable Wednesday morning. Tell Skip and Stephen A. I'll send them the bill for my hearing aid. Thanks again
Amy Nelson (11:53 AM)
sure thing chris. on that note we'll wrap it up for this week. thanks to everyone who wrote in this week. see you next wednesday, enjoy the finals...
