John Hollinger (3:13 PM)
Greetings from la-la land, where I have a full agenda of sightseeing to do this week. In fact, between The Lounge, the Sports Guy Mansion, and the mandatory Fullerton State campus tour, I may not have enough time to see the games.
Beak Head (Atlanta)
Is there any logical reason for Rick Sund to give Mike Woodson a contract extension (other than he once hired Bob Weiss)?
John Hollinger (3:14 PM)
Can't really think of one. But the owners appear to be big Woodson fans and that may save him.
Ethan (Philly)
Why does Pat Riley want Mayo over Beasley when everyone else would take Beasley in a second? It's looney!
John Hollinger (3:15 PM)
Can't be sure that everyone would take Beasley at 2 -- nobody's asking the teams who pick later what they'd do. But you're correct that Miami's ideal scenario is a trade down to No. 3
Nasir, Philly
What is your take on the Del Negro signing? Good move or bad move by the Bulls?
John Hollinger (3:16 PM)
Weird move. Seems like they did it more because he'd work for cheap than because they were blown away by his qualifications. Hope I'm wrong, but Reinsdorf's reputation precedes him.
Chris (Townsend, Ma)
Who wins tonight and why?
John Hollinger (3:17 PM)
Lakers, because teams down 2-0 and coming home from Game 3 almost always submit their best effort. Also, there's a 90% chance that Bennett Salvatore is in the building, which means Kobe might shoot 80 free throws if he goes to the basket.
Vinny (lowell, Ma
Are you shock that the celtics are up 2-0 on the lakers?
John Hollinger (3:18 PM)
Shocked is a bit strong, I knew there was a decent chance this could happen. But I figured chances were better that it went back to LA tied at 1.
Dan (St. Paul)
Heat trade down to 3? Why would Minnesota give them anything to move up one spot if the Heat don't even want Beasley?
John Hollinger (3:18 PM)
Because of the threat of Miami trading the pick to somebody else. It's all a poker game.
Brandon (RVC,NY)
Are Rose, Beasley, Mayo, and Bayless in your mind locks to be the first 4 players chosen?
John Hollinger (3:19 PM)
You can't say anything is a lock this far out, but I'd be surprised if that wasn't the top four, yes.
PJ (Boston)
Refs are Crawford, Salvatore, and Wunderlich for tonight.
John Hollinger (3:20 PM)
Thanks, hadn't seen the roster yet. Crawford and Salvatore kind of cancel each other out -- Joey lets 'em play. I'm a little surprised he got a finals assignment since he's already had two playoff gigs that didn't end well.
Brian (Boston, MA)
Leon Powe had a monster game in Game 2. PJ Brown has played solid off the bench for most of the playoffs. If you're Doc Rivers, which of the Celtics backup bigs gets more playing time?
John Hollinger (3:21 PM)
Here's the interesting thing: Doc will not play Powe with Garnett. Won't do it. I'm not sure why, if any Cs fans have any insight on this I'd love to hear it.
Ross( EUG,OR)
Would you consider the Finals to be over if the celtic's take game 3 in L.A.? Who's your pick for tonight? the series?
John Hollinger (3:23 PM)
Yes, it's over tonight if Celtics win, which is another reason I think LA will summon its best effort and prevail. As for the series, L.A. has a tough road ahead because they really need to win all three in Staples. They're capable, but right now the odds favor Boston.
Amare (PHX)
Terry Porter can't make me play defense.
John Hollinger (3:25 PM)
Somehow, he's going to have to. Otherwise the Suns will have changed coaches for no reason. For what it's worth, I've talked to a lot of people here at the Finals who like both Porter and Curry; but obviously, it's a different challenge when you move one chair over on the bench.
Doc (Boston MA)
Should I play Eddie House tonight??
John Hollinger (3:26 PM)
I think so. Sam's wrist injury is just enough to tip the balance in my mind. Key is that he has to play House with Allen so that there's another ballhandler to relieve the pressure.
Eric (NJ)
Doc Rivers won't play Powe and Garnett togehter because eh's a bad coach and doesn't realize the advantage he'd have with Garnett having his way with Gasol on offense while Powe does his thing offensively.
John Hollinger (3:27 PM)
Yes, Doc's killing them. By the way, he's two games from a championship.
RK (Motown)
Now Michael Curry is the new head coach for the pistons, is he the right coach to develop young players especially Rodney Stuckey and Amir Johnson?
John Hollinger (3:27 PM)
Those will be his orders heading into the season. Playing Stuckey is a no-brainer, but he'll be pushed and prodded to find minutes for Johnson, which Flip never quite came around on.
John (Le Mars, IA)
In the last game, the Celtics let the Lakers back in the game in the last quarter. Does this cause some concerns going to LA for the Celtics on the road, or do you believe the Celtics will be able to not let that happen again?
John Hollinger (3:29 PM)
The Celtics have done this a couple times in the postseason. I think that's just the natural flow of the game -- you need a lot of things to go right to build a 24-point lead against a good team, and inevitably that won't hold up for 48 minutes.
Eric (Smyrna/GA)
Are you surprise Phil did not get fined for his comments regarding the officiating following game 2? The "referees referee an illusion" comment seemed like it crossed the line.
John Hollinger (3:29 PM)
Very surprised, yes, and I'm not the only one.
Aaron (West Laf)
Did you read Curt Schilling's blog about sitting near the Lakers bench? It made Bryant sound - well, just say worse - than i thought.
John Hollinger (3:31 PM)
Very interesting, although obviously it must be taken with an entire pillar of salt. I guess the most telling thing is that nobody was terribly shocked to read this.
Rick (Sullys Tap)
Put this beer on JA Adande's tab... I gotta drive home..
John Hollinger (3:32 PM)
starting a little early today, aren't we? Although I like the idea about putting everything on JA's tab. I might have to use that.
Craig (PA)
Do you think Schilling taught Paul Pierce about faking injuries for dramatic effect?
John Hollinger (3:32 PM)
Genius. post of the day, hands down.
John (North Carolina)
Very interesting article in the Daily Dime today. Do you think the calls will be lopsided in favor of the Lakers tonight? Personally I think the home court calls will balance out with the much more aggressive celtics team and we will see the ft's fairly even tonight.
John Hollinger (3:34 PM)
I think the free throws were the effect, not the cause. if the Lakers are more aggressive and stop acting like this series is a six-game inconvenience prior to the parade, then they'll get calls and get to the line. Otherwise, they'll lose again.
Brian Scalabrine (Boston MA)
Let me in Doc... just one ill-advised three.. that's it..
John Hollinger (3:34 PM)
Scal may dress tonight if Cassell can't go. That'd be a start, anyway.
PLEASE (NY)
NO MORE PLAYOFFS QUESTIONS! Us non-playoff losers need some attention! What do the Raptors do with TJ Ford? Do they accept pennies on the dollar, or do they keep him and deal Calderon? Ford had a 20.37 PER this season, which you say is all-star caliber!
John Hollinger (3:35 PM)
they have to get what they can for Ford, although they have the option of waiting til the trade deadline. But once they resign Calderon they'll have too much money invested in a position where most teams make their smallest investments.
Boston in NY
Why is the Free Throw disparity such a big deal when the Personal Fouls are close (LA had 7 more). I couls see if both numbers were distant, but doesn't this just prove if you can't go to the rim and rely on jumpshots you will not get foul attempts. It seems to me many people are just ignoring the truth becasue Phil Jackson got a little moody.
John Hollinger (3:37 PM)
Completely agree -- boston was called for a bunch of offensive and non-shooting fouls, in another sign of their aggression. L.A. was fouling because they let guys get within two feet of the basket.
Paul (Portland, OR)
No more playoffs questions? The headline is "Chat about the NBA Finals".
John Hollinger (3:37 PM)
Details, details ...
Joe, RI
I'm amussed by Lamar Odom. He gets beat defensively. Then trys to make up for it with unnessecary hard fouls. Then complains to the Ref's when they call him for it. Its just odd to watch.
John Hollinger (3:38 PM)
you've unwittingly hit on the key guy tonight. Kobe will play better and Pau has done a decent job, but Odom has been pretty much useless and sat out the last two fourth quarters. He needs to step it up in a big way.
Brad(NM)
The Schilling teaching Paul Pierce statement might've been the post of the day had it not been said in Chris Broussard's chat yesterday. Ahh Laker's fans..ever so bitter things aren't going as they planned.
John Hollinger (3:38 PM)
Ah ... missed that one. Was flying all day.
Mark G. (WA)
Lakers better take care of business this series, because Fessenko is going to storm the league next year for the Jazz, leaving everyone wondering why so much talk kept centering on Bynum and Oden.
John Hollinger (3:39 PM)
starting a little early today, aren't we?
Jimmy (Chicago)
John, I have a question for you about the Draft. I was wondering what you think of the rookie pay scale. It seems like if the league wants to really be international, they need to change the scale. Take the Spurs for instance, they draft Tiago in the first round but cant pay him as much as his team in Spain. However, if they had picked him like 4 picks later (in the second round) then they could have offered him alot more money. This seems to be a problem that needs to be addressed as more and more teams look overseas.
John Hollinger (3:41 PM)
I asked Stern about this at his press conference before Game 2 and he completely dismissed the need to do anything. I think he's wrong -- it hurts the competitiveness of the league if not all the best players can come, and it hurts teams drafting late in the first if it's impossible to get foreign talent to take that rookie salary.
John Hollinger (3:42 PM)
I'll tell you when it will become a Big Issue -- when an American player decides to pass up being the 23rd pick or whatever to play in Madrid for $5 million a year.
Colin (Walla Walla, WA)
do you think anyone will be able to unseat the Lakers in the west next year once they have Bynum back?
John Hollinger (3:43 PM)
Lakers will be clear favorites, but Utah is a strong threat too. And don't forget about Houston.
Kip (Cleveland)
John, can you give us one measurable or completely subjective reason why Kobe gets mentioned along with MJ?
John Hollinger (3:44 PM)
There isn't one, but people love to do this stuff. Two years ago they were comparing Wade to Jordan.
Craig (PA)
Why does Boston have such an inferiority complex? You see beat LA signs at Celts games and Yankees Suck signs at Fenway, but never the other way around?
John Hollinger (3:45 PM)
For LA fans, I think it's not worth the investment in a sign if you're only at the game for 45 minutes.
William (Los Angeles)
John, a follow-up question about the Rookie pay-scale: Maybe it needs tweaking (increasing the cap to make it more competitive with what international teams pay), but doesn't it also prevent the NBA from going down the NFL route, where so many rookies make so much money without ever having once touched the field against other pros?
John Hollinger (3:46 PM)
I like the idea of the rookie cap, yes, they just need to raise the salaries at the back end of the draft if they want to get good, young Europeans to come across.
Andy (Denver)
Do you realistically see a late first round American player being offered and accepting a $5 million a year deal to play in Europe anytime in the next five years? And $5 million in Euros is just above minimum wage.
John Hollinger (3:47 PM)
If that player were Hispanic, and was offered a deal by a team in Spain, I could easily see it happening, yes. Otherwise, probably a longshot.
Raffi Los Angeles
Before this series I had no idea who Powe was how can he have more free throws than the entire Lakers team?
John Hollinger (3:48 PM)
Powe had the second-highest rate of free-throw attempts to field-goal attempts in the NBA among players with at least four FGA per game; only Dwight Howard was ahead of him. You may not be familiar with him, but he's great at getting to the line, and for Phil to suggest that it was so weird for "Pow" to get those trips to the line suggests to me that he might want to watch more tape before Game 3.
cesar (tempe)
john, saw you on espnews yesterday. the response to powe was a great statistic.
John Hollinger (3:49 PM)
Thanks. Always nice to learn that somebody besides my mother was watching.
Craig (PA)
Are ESPN/ABC announcers allowed to admit the ref job in game 2 was horrid, or is that against their contract with the NBA?
John Hollinger (3:51 PM)
Please. Mike Breen works for the Knicks -- the ABC gig is like parole time for him. None of those guys are the type to pull punches.
Joe (Norton,MA)
Tell Kobe to stop being such a wuss, take the ball to the hoop, and he'll get some calls.
John Hollinger (3:52 PM)
he needs to either do that or creating enough penetration to set up a 3 for a teammate. Until the 4th last night, that wasn't happening either.
Christian (Manchester, NH)
John, I keep hearing they gonna try Kobe on Pierce. With the way the Lakers been playing defense, the way Ray Allen has been moving without the ball, wouldn't that give more open looks for Ray???
John Hollinger (3:53 PM)
Probably, because V-Rad is too slow to stay with him. But Kobe hasn't done great chasing Allen thru screens either and Pierce has been killing L.A., so switching it up may be the way to go.
Jason (Boston)
Can you explain why if Phil is the almighy of coaches why has he yet to put Kobe on Pierce and force the others to beat him?
John Hollinger (3:55 PM)
the reluctance to put Kobe on Pierce stems from Pierce's ability to draw fouls, which would leave L.A. in a bind if Kobe got in foul trouble. At this point, however, it's probably time to roll the dice.
Jared (NYC)
John - this whole chat has been about free throw disparity! How bout a draft tidbit....what do you see the knicks doing at 6?
John Hollinger (3:57 PM)
I still love the idea of Randolph and No. 6 to the Sixers for Reggie Evans and No. 16. They'd have to use the pick themselves and then make the trade July 1 when Philly's cap space kicks in. Philly gets its power foward (Zach) and its shooter (Eric Gordon), and the Knicks get their cap space for LeBron and still can use a first this year.
Jake Scott (Indiana)
Nj is going to win it all next year with melo instead of RJ
John Hollinger (3:57 PM)
Starting a little bit early, aren't we?
Ben (Lee, NH)
John...life on the line, give me your matchup in the 2012 NBA Finals.
John Hollinger (3:58 PM)
I'll say Oklahoma City vs. St. Louis.
Rizzo ( Mil-town WI )
Where would you rank Pierce amongst all-time Celtics ? The few times Kobe's been on him, he's still managed to do what he wants. Is he in the top tier of players now and chances at HOF ?? Thanks !
John Hollinger (4:01 PM)
The big impact for Pierce would on his HOF chances -- much like it did for Billups a few years ago, a Finals MVP trophy would vastly improve his odds of making Springfield. (Although regardless, there are 53 active college coaches who will get in ahead of him. Gotta love the Hoophall.)
John Hollinger (4:02 PM)
Folks, that's all the time i have but I'm gonna hand off the baton here. Thanks for all the great questions and we'll do this again next week ... perhaps from Boston, perhaps not.
Buzzmaster (4:03 PM)
We've got Will!
David (LA)
If the Lakers get down big again tonight, do you see Kobe or Phil getting tossed for yelling at the refs?
Will Perdue (4:05 PM)
Well, David, I guess what we have to consider is are the Lakers down because of the officials or because of lack of intensity. At that point, we can determine what they need to do to change the game. If it is that hte officiating is taking the same route of Game 2, I think it would be beneficial that Phil gets kicked out more so than Kobe.
Doug (Boston)
I never realized how offensively weak LA is when Kobe is on the bench, its staggering.
Will Perdue (4:06 PM)
They need to be more efficient on the offense. The one thing he provides is the bail out when the shot clock gets down to 5 seconds. But the triangle offense is predicated on ball movement. There have been times when Phil has taken Kobe out of hte game to get more ball movement and when he gets back in, it helps the offensive execution.
Don (Washington, DC)
Will, you've played with His Airness in his prime. What do you make of the comparison between and Kobe? Is it fair?...
Will Perdue (4:08 PM)
I think there are a lot of similarities. From a skills stand point, they're equal. But I think the disparity between the two is that Michael's ability to lead his team to victory in situations just like this. That's an area where Kobe has excelled not only this year, but last year. I know he had the hiccup last summer wanting to be traded, but he wants to win a championship every year. But unfortunately for him, he was airing out his laundry in public where Michael used to do it in private.
Donald (Phoenix)
Ever since The Miracle's back to back threes in game 1, the Lakers have been shellshocked. Did they get their heads back during the almost comeback?
Will Perdue (4:09 PM)
I think so. The Lakers actually stepped up and admitted that Pierce going out actually affected them more than the Celtics. When Pierce went out, the Celtics actually outscored the Lakers. They started out Game 2 well, but they couldn't keep up the intensity through the three quarters. They started making some stops on the defensive side of the floor.
Kitch (Rosa)
Boston looks really strong and I don't see them intimidated at all going into Staples. I think they'll pull away with Game 3. What do you think? And if they do, how many games do you think the series will go?
Will Perdue (4:11 PM)
I think first of all, it's a must win for the Lakers. No one has come back from a 3-0 deficit. They need to play with the intensity, but also the recognition that this is it for us. We have to win this game. First and foremost, they have to do it on the defensive end first.
Will Perdue (4:11 PM)
The big thing is will be to watch the officiating in this game. Phil made it known in his first question in the press conference that Leon Pow, actually Powe had more free throws than the entire Lakers team.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Will, you played in the triangle offense and what the Lakers ran in games 1 and 2 was not the triangle offense.
Will Perdue (4:13 PM)
It was the triangle offense, but it was the triangle with dribbles. The offense is predicated on passing the ball, not dribbling the ball. It's harder to guard a team that passes the ball than dribbles the ball. The first two games, they kept the ball on one side of the floor and they had to take shots late on the clock, most often being Kobe Bryant.
Drew (boston)
I think the almost comeback was due to the Celts thinking the game was over and pretty much stopped playing hard, rather then the Lakers execution. What say you?
Will Perdue (4:14 PM)
There is some truth to that. Even Doc Rivers addressed it that the team was playing the score and not the game. That's human nature. You look at the scoreboard and you let your guard down and relax. When you let the opposing team cut the lead to 2. One thing it allowed the Lakers to do is get confidence. Confidence in this league is contagious.
Jeff (Iowa)
Will, how impressed are you with Rondo's play?
Will Perdue (4:15 PM)
Very impressed. Because of Rondo, Sam Cassell, who was a late season acquisition, has not played. He was the guy that was brought in to provide some veteran experience in late game situations. The thing I was impressed with Rondo late in the season is he played in the same number of games this season as last, and he increased his assists, but cut down on his turnovers.
Ricky (LA)
How come the NBA has not fine Phil Jackson on his remarks about the officiating in Game 2? Maybe the NBA agrees?
Will Perdue (4:17 PM)
Well, that's a good question. I think he almost mentioned it more in passing. Yes he said this game was ridiculous, but then he backpedaled a little bit by the end of his answer and say that the Celtics were more aggressive.
Rayan (Los Angeles)
Will, if Kobe plays with the same intensity that he did in the 4th quarter of Game 2 how do you see the rest of this series playing out?
Will Perdue (4:18 PM)
One thing that Kobe has always done is play with intensity and play hard. But not only was Kobe able to knock down some shots, but his teammates as well. If you go back and look at the numbers, in Game 1, you had Vujacic 2-7 and others. But in Game 2, these guys knocked down some shots, especially threes, which opened it up for Kobe.
Jeff (Iowa)
Will, do you think Doc is surprised at the contribution and minutes he is getting from P.J. Brown?
Will Perdue (4:19 PM)
No, that's why they brought him in. They went to him and convinced him to come out of retirement. He's probably one guy off the bench whose minutes have been consistent.
jamma(boston)
if rondo doesnt turn it over and drives and gets everyone involved celts win easy
Will Perdue (4:20 PM)
Not quite that easy. That's what they ask him to do. Penetrate, if no one slides over, attack the basket, and if someone does, find the open man. If it's a Perkins around the rim or a Ray Allen or Pierce on the perimeter, don't turn it over and make smart decisions. But they still have to make stops on the defensive side of the floor.
Johnny Boy (Ventura, CA)
Mr. Purdue,Will coach Jackson be able to motivate this team to overcome a 2-0 defecit? Are the Lakers toast?
Will Perdue (4:22 PM)
I think he can. He's already started the ball rolling. He publically called Lamar Odom confused. He pointed out that Lamar needs to play better and I think he will. If necessary, he'll continue to go that route with other players. He expects players to play their role and if not, he'll use other methods to get them to do so.
Yamanda (Los Angeles)
Kobe needs to take the ball to the rim, period. The whole team is settling for jumpers and not attacking. C'mon look what they did this year in the postseason..swept the Nuggets, had fun with the Jazz, and handled the defending champs...the the oh yeah the Spurs. They have to get it done tonight. Play some D...they'll be fine!
Will Perdue (4:23 PM)
I thought Kobe did take it to the basket in Game 2, but he wasn't getting the calls that he's accustomed to be getting. That's why he got the technical on him.
Mike (NJ)
Game 5 Will be the most win game for both teams. the lakers will win games 4 and 5. plus everyone all of a sudden forget that boston is 2-7 on the road in this playoffs. what do you think?
Will Perdue (4:24 PM)
Not so much in Game 3 for the Celtics, but this is a golden opportunity for them to really put an exclamation point on this series. No one has ever come back from 3-0. I do see some doubt within the Lakers, but they seem like a very confident bunch. If the Celtics can jump on them early, you'll see some panic on the faces of the fans, but also of the Lakers.
nick(brooklyn , ny)
How does boston go to 7 games with atlanta whos is very young and weak, 7 games agianst Lebron and 11 scrubs and then really outplay detroit and outplay lakers. How is it possible to get outplayed by two worse teams and play better than two teams who are possible better than they are?
Will Perdue (4:26 PM)
That's a tough explanation. No one expected Atlanta to win a game against the Celtics. But that's when you talk about confidence being contagious. You saw that with the Hawks and the Cavaliers. But I also think that Boston has done a much better job defensively against the Lakers than against the Hawks or Cavaliers.
Will Perdue (4:27 PM)
We appreciate people continuing to watch the NBA. I think the product has vastly improved over the last couple of years. If you know of someone that hasn't watched in a few years, just mention the names LeBron James, D-Wade, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard. It's not the same old NBA, it's new and exciting.
Buzzmaster (4:28 PM)
Thanks for chatting Will! Pretty cool talking to a four-time NBA champion!
Buzzmaster (4:28 PM)
Next up are our friends from over at NBA.com!
John Schuhmann (4:30 PM)
Great to be in LA and back chatting. We just had Kareem here at the NBAE office talking to us about the Finals and his career in general. I'm amped for Game 3. Let's go.
David (LA, CA)
So right now, with the Lakers down 2-0, who are you picking to win the series? I can't see a Lakers team that wins 3 straight at home not having the momentum to win game 6 or 7, especially with Kobe playing for a ring.
John Schuhmann (4:32 PM)
Before the series, I had Celtics in 7. After Sunday's game, I changed that to Celtics in 6. But it wouldn't shock me if the Lakers take all three at home.
Jason (Santa Monica, CA)
the big difference in this series is the fact that the lakers ownership, fans, players as well as the national media already penciled them in for 2008 title as well as 8 of the next 10. maybe next season they will not overlook a strong opponent, especially the best team in the league. GREEN 17
John Schuhmann (4:33 PM)
Well, it ain't over yet, J. But you're right in that the Celtics' struggles with the Hawks and Cavs may have outweighed their regular season when certain people were making predictions on this series.
Magic (LA)
John, do you think if I played tonight, will the Lakers be better off?
John Schuhmann (4:35 PM)
In your current shape?
Preston (Utah)
The Jazz are so close to a championship, what do they need to do in the draft and in the offseason to make it happen?
John Schuhmann (4:35 PM)
Become a better defensive team.
Chris (Ontario, Canada)
Kobe should attack the rim. they will never win if he keeps on shooting on perimeter. That is the reason why they only took 10 FT last game. Phil dont have to blame it on the Refs, blame it to his players.
John Schuhmann (4:38 PM)
I agree, but the Celtics' defense just won't allow him to get to the cup as often as he'd like. He's getting better looks by playing off the ball, cutting to the paint, and receiving a pass closer to the basket. The dribble drives aren't there.
Ted (Orlando)
Fact or Fiction: Vince Carter will be on the Nets next season (if fiction, possible destinations?)
John Schuhmann (4:40 PM)
Fact. The Nets like Vince and Vince likes the Nets. It's not a certainty, because Rod Thorn will make any move to get his team competitive again, but you're more likely to see any other Net get traded than VC.
Steve (Boston)
John, do you think that going to 7 games against Atlanta and Cleveland actually helped the Celtics build playoff chemistry? Could it have been a blessing in an embarrassing disguise?
John Schuhmann (4:43 PM)
Interesting point. Even though they needed 20 games to get here, they had enough of a layoff to get their rest. So, looking back, it didn't hurt.As much chemistry as they had in the regular season, there's no match for playoff experience.
CHAD vALRICO FLORIDA
wHO WILL WIN TONIGHTS game?
John Schuhmann (4:43 PM)
My prediction: Lakers by 12 or more.
Amit (LA)
John - do you think we will see more of ariza/sasha instead of vlad? lakers play much better as a small ball team.
John Schuhmann (4:45 PM)
Well, if Radmanovic is going to start on Pierce, early foul trouble is likely once again. Ariza seems to be an offensive liability, but Vujacic should see plenty of burn.
matt (boston)
Tell me KG wont settle for the 20 footer tonight...
John Schuhmann (4:47 PM)
I brought this up in my Celtics keys for tonight:http://my.nba.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5700014666He's shooting 39 percent in the series, with most of his looks coming from the outside. He needs to get in the post early and often.
Raffi (Los Angeles)
John give me an honest answer on a scale of 1 to 10 10 being the for sure, do you see the Lakers winning this series?
John Schuhmann (4:48 PM)
3.5
Nick Papagiorgio (Yuma, Ariz.)
John, Why are the lakers struggling so much with the Celtics defense when they didn't with the Spurs?
John Schuhmann (4:51 PM)
They actually did struggle offensively against the Spurs, with an offensive rating of 105.0 points per 100 possessions, which was much lower than they had against Denver (119.2) and Utah (117.4). But their defense against San Antonio was much better.
Wade (Portland, OR)
John, do you think that there is a PG in this draft, other than Rose, that the Portland Trailblazers should trade away some of their young talent to get?
John Schuhmann (4:53 PM)
Augustin and Westbrook seem to be the next two on draft boards, but I'm not sure either is guaranteed to be better than Jarrett Jack. A veteran point who can hit a jumper (playing off of Roy) may be a better way to go.
Kev (NYC)
Is PPP (pts per poss.) more of a telling stat for the offense or opposing defense?
John Schuhmann (4:54 PM)
Both. You need to look at it relative to what the teams do against other opponents.
Chris (Salem, Or)
John...Is it possible that Paul exaggerated that knee a little bit to get his fans and players pumped up? And as he and Kendrick pound away at it in these next 3 games in LA could both of their injuries get worse and start affecting them?
John Schuhmann (4:57 PM)
I don't think he exaggerated it. He hurt his knee in Game 1 of the Finals after going nine seasons without ever making it here. I think he was genuinely scared. And from what my orthopedist friend told me, I think that if Pierce was OK in Game 2, he shouldn't get any worse. Not sure about Perk. We'll keep an eye on it.
Randy (Blakeslee, PA)
John what do u think about starting kobe on pierce and starting sasha on allen and bringing Vlad off the bench?
John Schuhmann (4:58 PM)
Certainly worth a shot, but I think it's more likely that Radmanovic just takes Ray and Sasha stays on the bench.
Andrew (Maine)
John, do you think the C's are playing with a little chip on their shoulder considering the majority of the national analysts picked the Lakers in a landslide and no one was giving their bench any respect? It seems like many in the national media have continued to make excuses for the Lakers suggesting Pierce was faking a injury and blaming the officiating rather than crediting the Celtics. I personally think the C's are as locked in and focused right now as they have ever been this post-season.
John Schuhmann (4:59 PM)
Sure. Teams will use whatever they can as motivation. And as far as being locked in and focused... I would hope so. They're two wins away from a title.
Donald (Phoenix)
Is it true that The Miracle did not get an MRI on his knee? That's simply shocking.
John Schuhmann (5:00 PM)
True. The dude went nine years without getting to the Finals. He's not letting anything get in his way now, so he doesn't want to know what's wrong.
John Schuhmann (5:01 PM)
My time's up. I'm passing the baton to my man, Dave McMenamin.
Dave McMenamin (5:02 PM)
Last year I had the Cavs beat for NBA.com and this year I have the Lakers. That means that for all six Finals games I've covered, I've written about the losing team. I have a feeling that's going to change tonight. Let's get to the questions.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Why can't the Lakers contain Rondo the way they contained Tony Parker (force him to the baselines)? Rondo killed the Lakers in Game 2 with his penetration.
Dave McMenamin (5:05 PM)
Hate to say it because he's meant so much to the Lakers this season in terms of presence and knocking down jump shots, but the reason the Lakers have been Rondo'd is Derek Fisher. Rondo has been blowing by Fish out on the perimeter and that penetration is setting up open jumpers for the rest of the Celtics. And when Fish isn't getting beat by Rondo, he's fouling him and putting the Lakers in the penalty early into quarters. Something has to change. Look for more Jordan Farmar.
TL (Hopedale, MA)
Who's more soft, the Lakers or the Pillsbury dough boy?
Dave McMenamin (5:08 PM)
In Games 1 and 2, the Lakers weren't just Pillsbury Dough Boy soft, they were Stay Puff Marshmallow Man soft. That's a whole nother level of weakness.
Ray (San Diego)
For all the Lakers fans and Phil Jackson, who stated that he had never seen a playoff game with the FT disparity that he saw in Game 2... what were those fans saying during Game 2 of the Jazz - Lakers series, when the Lakers shot 43 FT's to the Jazz's 16?! I'm sure it was the Lakers just being "more aggressive", right?
Dave McMenamin (5:09 PM)
Great point. Can we quit the whining?
greg, parsippany
Call the Truth the Lie now, bum knee my butt!!!
Dave McMenamin (5:12 PM)
Seriously. We went from thinking "season ending injury" to "Finals MVP" for The Lie in about 17 minutes. Pierce admitted that he was a little embarrassed by being carried off the floor. I think it was just a case of him never experiencing a knee injury before in his career and overreacting a little bit.
Craig (PA)
With a name like McMenamin how could he not favor the Celtics.
Dave McMenamin (5:15 PM)
Just because I'm Irish, doesn't mean I'm rooting for the Celtics. It's funny though, I have a tattoo of a shamrock on my forearm that I got when I studied abroad in Ireland and I make sure to cover it up with my notebook when I cover Lakers practice because I don't want them thinking I'm a Boston supporter. I'm impartial, mostly. If anything, you could accuse me of having too high of an opinion of Kobe Bryant.
big papi (LA)
how many times do u think gasol will dunk in the face of garnett tonight
Dave McMenamin (5:19 PM)
Big Papi, nice of you to make the trip out for Game 3. Did you bring Antoine Walker with you? I saw you two together on Sunday and all I could think about was Toine explaining to you the finer points of the shimmy.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
Hey Dave- (10 minutes) Over/under on the number of minutes Eddie House gets in game 3
Dave McMenamin (5:20 PM)
Seeing that Cassell has his shot going, I'm putting it at four and taking the under.
Noah (IL)
Whats the biggest name player in this series you see not being on one of these rosters next year?
Dave McMenamin (5:21 PM)
Ira Newble is a big name, isn't he?
Donald (Phoenix)
Isn't the Alien injured?
Dave McMenamin (5:22 PM)
Yes, sprained wrist in Game 2. Might have to adjust that House line. Good point.
Arjun Los Angeles
What does a loss to the Celtics in the finals do to Kobe's overall legacy?
Dave McMenamin (5:24 PM)
If Kobe can't rally the Lakers it will be two straight Finals losses for him. Michael was 6-for-6, so he'd be miles away from him at 3-for-5. He'd even fall behind his old buddy Shaq, who is 4-for-6.
Harold (Los Angeles)
Do you see Lamar going "McHale" on Perkins or Shuttleworth tonight? It's not Lamar is doing anything anyway
Dave McMenamin (5:25 PM)
Lamar is too important to risk suspension like that. D.J. MBenga on the other hand ...
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
1 more over/under: Number of times kobe cries 'foul' after a shot attempt?
Dave McMenamin (5:27 PM)
I'm pretty sure Kobe will be using another "f" word if his shot isn't going in tonight.
David (Downtown LA)
Where is agent Zero's next destination?
Dave McMenamin (5:29 PM)
Probably his game room to play XBox.
Agent Zero (His Game Room)
Is that a challenge?
Dave McMenamin (5:30 PM)
I only play NBA LIVE 95 for SNES.
reggie- terrell texas
i think this is kobes time to shineto show everybody the lakers are for real.
Dave McMenamin (5:31 PM)
I agree with you Reggie. It's about time we got a transcendent game out of Mr. Mamba. Is it too much to ask for 50-plus tonight?
Dave McMenamin (5:32 PM)
Thanks guys. Have to head to the arena now. The Buzzmaster will take over until Chris Sheridan at 7.
Buzzmaster (5:34 PM)
What's going on amigos?
Buzzmaster (5:35 PM)
Thanks Dave and John for chatting. Those NBA.com fellers have been doing a bang up job.
Sherm (San Diego)
Any chance our beloved Celtics will sweep the Evil Empire Jr, Lakers?BEAT LA!!!!!
Ed (Fond du Lac, WI)
Ok, just joined the chat. As a basketball fan but a casual NBA observer, can anyone explain to me why Kevin Garnett takes so many 17 footers? Can we get a statistic on how many of those he makes? I think if he stays closer to the basket and uses his athleticism on the block, the Celtics are in much better shape. Thoughts?
Alec (Birmingham, Alabama)
Buzz, do you see the Hawks making a coaching move with Avery Johnson and Flip Saunders out their?
Buzzmaster (5:36 PM)
Hmmm. That's an interesting idea. Though they did make it to the playoffs this season without those guys.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
Are you laughing at all of the experts who called this series over before it started...or are you someone getting laughed at?
Buzzmaster (5:37 PM)
I gave the Celtics a chance to win this series, but I did not think the Lakers would play as poorly as they have. It's going to be a BIG Game 3 tonight.
Mike (Los Angeles)
I think the whining about the whining needs to stop. It has overtaken the original whining.
Buzzmaster (5:38 PM)
Mike -- any whining needs to be stopped. It's gotten so bad, it's now spreading into horse racing.
KG (Boston, MA)
i come up huge tonight and get aggressive. i'm the most passionate player in the NBA going up against a soft "finesse" Laker team.
fredo, omaha
can we just call you buzz or Mr. Master?do you have a buzz cut?ever meet buzz peterson?ever listen to the buzzcocks?know any other buzzes?
Buzzmaster (5:39 PM)
Buzz Lightyear. Meet the Buzzes. ''Buzz''-ter Olney. Hangin' with Mr. Buzz.
Lamar Odom (LA)
Who am I? Why am I here?
Paul (Portland, OR)
I think the referees caused Big Brown to lose.
TL (Hopedale, MA)
The only thing that will make the Laker fans stop whining, is that if instead of the opening tip, the refs just send Kobe to the line for 2.
Brian (DC)
And you are whining about whining?
Buzzmaster (5:40 PM)
See? It's contagious.
Drew (Boston)
Buzz, after Schilling published his observations, and seeing Kobe's general frustration in Boston, have you heard anything about a possible rift developing btwn him and his teammates? This would be the real bad news for the Lakers
Buzzmaster (5:41 PM)
Yes. The Lakers rely on Curt Schilling's observations from tens of feet away to determine how they feel about Kobe, a guy that they see and practice and play with and probably spend more time with than their own families.
DJ Mbenga (LA)
Use my fouls and size against Powe tonight!!!
Marco (Italy)
The Lakerse have been massacred to rebound 46-33 in competition 1 and from many has been considered the principal factor of their defeat in competition 1 e 2 no??
Buzzmaster (5:42 PM)
Welcome to the chat Marco! All the way from Italy -- we're international, baby!
Buzzmaster (5:43 PM)
And yes, the rebounds is also a big factor.
Ben (Nashville)
I think the Lakers must drive more, but come on Cfans 38 to 10....just plain nuts!!
Buzzmaster (5:43 PM)
Ben, I'm sure the Jazz fans were saying the same thing about 48-16 or whatever it was.
Sedale Threatt
I still want to play for the Lakers. They could use my shooting skills
Stephen (Raleigh, NC)
Does anybody else get the feeling that Kobe's going to go ape tonight, after seeing the look on his face the other night in the final seconds of Game 2. I think he will be on fire tonight, emotionally as well as game-wise.
Jeff (Asheville, NC)
38 to 10, 28 to 21, 14 to 10, all that matters right now is 2 to none and if it becomes three to none its all but over.
D (MASS)
38-10 free throw ratio, but look at the fouls called numbers, 26-Lakers 21-Celtics I believe....might help if the lakers stopped being so soft and got shooting fouls.
Brian (Philly)
Face it Buzz, you just want to see Deebo return for Game 3. His posts during Game 1 were huge.
Buzzmaster (5:47 PM)
He did come up huge for us in the chat. Provided a good boost off the bench.
Fred, San Antonio TX
Hey Buzz,Can you post your resume? I have never heard of you and you were not on the roster.
Buzzmaster (5:47 PM)
I don't have a resume. I jumped right from high school to the pros.
George (LA)
Why did the lakers go away from their inside game?
solemon (concord, ca)
yeah the jazz free throw argument could be used, but the difference is the Jazz were fouling Kobe and Lamar and they were shooting the free throws. They weren't getting outshot by Ronny Turiaf.
Gopi (Atlanta, GA)
buzzmaster, the Jazz commit the most fouls per game in the league...not the same thing.
Steiny (NYC)
How lucky is Pau Gasol. If he had not gotten traded to the Lakers he would have been sitting home still playing for the Memphis Grizzlies.
Kurt (SLC)
What do the Jazz need to do in the off season to get that elusive title first MJ in the late 90's and now Kobe, what gives?
Buzzmaster (5:49 PM)
Steal Kobe.
fredo, omaha
With a name like buzz he don't need no stinkin' resume or roster postin'!
Frank (Los Angeles, CAL)
Im a die hard laker fan do you still think the lakers have a chance winning the title this year?
Cailan(Holden,Ma)
Hey Buzz, If one of the Big 3 is off his game tonight, who do you see picking up the slack for the Celtics tonight in Game 3
Buzzmaster (5:49 PM)
The Big 2.
Scott (LA)
so why is it that other fans (utah, spurs, pistons) can complain about calls and the such, but fans of the lakers can't. does having an advantage in the past, preclude the possibility of a disadvantage in the future? I demand equal complaining rights.
Buzzmaster (5:50 PM)
That's why I sad earlier, any whining in any shape or form needs to be abolished.
Brian (Philly)
On that note Buzz, could you do a system check before the start of the Game 3 chat? Don't need another Game 1 debacle.
Buzzmaster (5:51 PM)
No we don't. However, I was told that it was literally someone hitting the wrong button while working on the server and did not realize the effect of what he'd done.
Ryan (LA)
Will people stop brining up Game 2 against Utah for free throw disparity? Utah fouled 6 times in the last 2 minutes to extend the game. That's 12 extra free throws, so the real count for that game is 32-16, which is twice as many. The Lakers only had one foul to extend Game 2 in Boston. That's only 2 extra FTs, leaving the count at 36-10, which is nearly 4x as many. That's a HUGE difference.
Buzzmaster (5:51 PM)
Get it all out.
Mikey (Fontana CA)
Kobe go for 40 tonight?
Hutch (Htfd)
Dinner Chat: Chicken Fried steak, Mashed Taters and Mango Gatorade.
Donald (Phoenix)
You are still whining about the whining!
Matt (Boston)
Is the NBA rigged? I anticipate the Lakers winning all 3 and then winning the 6th game so they can take it to the 7th. Stern has a secret service type headset to the refs. In all seriousness, hasn't this league become a little too predictable?
Buzzmaster (5:52 PM)
Ummmm, no.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
All I hear from the LA area posts is "WAAAAAAAA" Man up and play, the refs didn't make you go down by 20
Brian (Philly)
So was the guy who hit the wrong button docked $50,000? Or suspended for game 2?
Buzzmaster (5:53 PM)
He now owes me a lifetime supply of toothbrushes.
Paul (Portland, OR)
Has nobody followed a chat before? There's whining all over the place. If it's not foul calls it's, "Why's everyone hate my team, my favorite player?" WAAH!
LAMAR (LA)
HAHAHA Matt from Boston just got TORE UP by BUZZZZZZZZZ!!
meric(Turkey C.K)
yeap kobe gonna 40 i wish it....
Buzzmaster (5:54 PM)
And so it shall be.
Randy (Utah)
Buzzmaster, you are right about how us jazz fans felt about the foul calls in the Lakers series. I am just as happy as I can be that the calls are going against the Lakers now. Love seeing their coach, players, and especially their fans complaining about this. Life is good (it would be better if the Jazz were in the finals). Lots of Jazz fans cheering for the Celtics.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
Everyone is calling the NBA 'rigged'...is it that hard to believe that the top 2 teams in the league took care of business and are meeting in the Finals...
Tom (Chicago)
The NBA predictable? Considering only 7 teams have won the title since 1987, I'd say yes...
Buzzmaster (5:55 PM)
Good stat Tom. But that required a little too much work. I'm disappointed in you.
KG (Boston)
HHAHAHA, I tore up Lamar from LA and will keep tearing him up
Matt (Denver, CO)
The NBA is not rigged, but I cant think of another pro-sport where the officials are as influential over the out come of the game. It is obsurd.
Luis (los angeles)
Buzz, you suck at responding quickly to these questions
Buzzmaster (5:57 PM)
Luis, your expectations are too high.
Fred, San Antonio TX
Um, the top two teams would not be the top two teams if it were not for two shady trades coordinated by Jerry West and Kevin McHale. It's not exactly a leap to see a conspiracy. Not to mention Joey Crawford and the clearly biased officiating.
Brian (Philly)
Hmmm, 6 of those were MJ, another 4 for Duncan, and 3 for Shaq/Kobe. 13 out of the last 20 won by dominant players on dynasty teams.
Buzzmaster (5:58 PM)
Happy 43rd birthday to Elizabeth Hurley!
scott (fresno)
Buzz, anybody who thinks game 2 was fairly officiated gets to spend the night with you in the stupid hotel.
Buzzmaster (5:58 PM)
Come on over and join the party.
Chris (Detroit)
Only 3 more hours till the game starts (we all know it really starts at 9)
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
Big market teams have more money to spend on superstars...superstars win big games, big games attract big crowds, big crowds spend a lot of money, its a cycle...thats why the same teams win, not a conspiracy
Clay (Baton Rouge)
I think it's possible that the Celtics will win tonight.
Brian (Philly)
PTI is Greatness.
micah (chicago)
buzz, sounds like you are typing and watching PTI at the same time...way to multi-task!
Paul (Portland, OR)
Elizabeth Hurley? That was tangential, Buzz.
Ryan (LA)
Buzz, Can you stop posting funny pointless responses and actually impart knowledge on the game?
Buzzmaster (6:00 PM)
You said I was funny. Sweet.
Mikey (Fontana CA)
The problem with Kobe is his obsession to be the best. He is by far the best player in the league today hands down, but to fulfill the shoes of Michael Jordan is a tall task, the man is a worldwide basketball icon. The Lakers supporting cast need to ease the burden off Kobe and start playing smart basketball. Attack the interior and kick it out to your shooters. You got Vuijaic,Fisher,Radmanavic,Farmar, all these players can shoot. They need to stop relying on the refs.
Buzzmaster (6:02 PM)
Exactly. Just look at what they did in their fourth quarter run in Game 2. It was all drive and kick for a three. And it seemed like they made every one of their shots.
Brian (LA)
Ryan, you must be new around here.
Fred, San Antonio TX
I feel my last post deserves a response. At least one of your one-liners. Are you a computer program, buzz? Must be a PC. A MAC would pump out at least two sentences.
Buzzmaster (6:03 PM)
I am a robot. I am here to chat about the NBA. Thank you for coming. Beep. Beep. Boop.
Chaz (Dallas)
Everyone complaining now just makes me laugh, because they were telling us Mavs fans to suck it up two years ago when even worse officiating was going on in the finals. Of course, Salvatore's reffing tonight, so it could get worse before it gets better.
Pat (Chicago)
Remember when Pau Gasol could not win a playoff series? He is the same dude, but now he is playing with Kobe
Sasha (LA)
Stop stealing my schtick, Buzz.
Ryan (LA)
So now that i have your attention..Does Trevor Ariza play more tonight?Does Benga guard Powe?Do the refs play into Kobe's hands tonight with many many fouls?
Buzzmaster (6:04 PM)
No. No. And no.
Tom (Beantown)
pau gasol - ugliest player in the NBA? If not, then who?
Buzzmaster (6:04 PM)
I thought that award was named the Tyrone Hill Award?
Chris (Detroit)
So know we are complaining about calls from previous years? Alright, in 88 Detroit got totally screwed and we would of 3 peated.
David (OH)
Buzz, do you believe that the Lakers have what it takes to come back from an 0-2 deficit and win 4 out of the next 6 which would include at least one win in Boston?
Buzzmaster (6:06 PM)
The hardest part of this 2-3-2 series is the road team winning three at home. It's hard enough winning one game in the Finals, let along three straight. Has Boston even lost three straight yet this season?
Jeremy (Gastonia, NC)
I am pulling for Kobe and the Lakers and i still believe that if they can defend their homecourt in the next 3 games, then they can pull one of the two games off in boston
Sam Cassell
Somebody trying to take my "Ugliest Dude in the NBA, Hands Down, No Doubt" award??
Herman (LA)
Tyrone Hill is behind Ewing in my book, and both fall well behind Popeye Jones in the ugliest category.
Fate
Don't tempt me Buzz. Three straight, coming up!
KOBE (LA)
Yes- Once and it is about to be twice BUZZ
Stevo (LA)
def sam cassel is the ugliest player
Martin LA, CA
I would just like to remind lakers fans, that MJ is better than Kobe, because the 6 years I watched him win championships, he never made Bulls fans as worried as Kobe has made laker fans. It was never a matter of IF MJ will get it going, it was always a matter of when. Sometimes he killed teams early like the game against Portland where he was on fire from downtown early, or all those game winners. MJ always came through and never let his fans doubt him. Sounds like Kobe fans are scared of losing...
Ben (PHX)
Turiaf looks like the Predator
victormonroe,la
the lakers will start pulling thrir shoes on tonight trust me.
SS (San Diego)
I think there's a difference between goofiest-looking and ugliest-looking. Popeye wins the goofiest. I'm on the Cassell or Tyrone Hill bandwagon for ugliest.
Buzzmaster (6:08 PM)
Doesn't matter. They all win the ''Ugliest Player Who Will Make More Money Than I Can Ever Dream Of'' Award.
Brian (Philly)
If it's Kobe's destiny to win a title, let it be next year. KG, Pierce and Allen deserve rings not just for being great players, but class acts outside the game.
History
Jordan never made any mistakes, lost any games or missed any shots.
Buzzmaster (6:09 PM)
You've read that history book too?
St. Louis, MO
Why is everyone dogging the Lake Show?? Boston was supposed to win their home games... If , the Lakers lose tonight, then we have a problem! Thoughts?
Buzzmaster (6:10 PM)
Exactly. Though, except for a 4-minute stretch in the fourth quarter in Game 2, the Lakers haven't looked that great.
Pat (Chicago)
We the people of Chicago don't even allow Kobe. In the same sentence as Michael Jordan(you see what I did there)
Chris (Detroit)
New conspiracy theory. Kobe is letting Boston win because Pierce, Allen and KG are good guys and deserve to win.
Peter (NH)
You know what's great? When you can consistently screw up lineups throughout your entire coaching career, but be considered a good coach by the media just because you have the best defensive assistant and a team with loads of talent carry you through your bad decisions to within 2 games of a title. I bet Bush wishes he had some stellar cabinet that could have done this for him.
Scott (LA)
Pat, was this before or after you guys were chanting "kobe" during your home games
HM (Maryland
No one is dogging the Lake Show. If you look at the rosters, player for player.. the Celtics are better. I would want more of their players on my team
Justin (Long Island, New York)
Reasons it is NOT rigged...1) Knicks are beyond horrible for 7+ years2) Small town/boring Spurs won 4 titles3) Why bball, but not MLB, NFL and NHL? I don't the argument and why the NBA is singled out (I hear the whole rigged conspiracy all the time from one of my friends)
David (OH)
Buzz, the Celts did lose three in a row from Feb 19-22. This was during one of their West coast visits.
Buzzmaster (6:12 PM)
OK, well there you go.
Biff's Sports Almanac
Kobe Bryant's Lakers came from 2 games down to beat the Celtics in 6 in 2008. The home team won the first 5 games of the series.
Donald (Phoenix)
Au countraire, Buzzy baby. The Lakers led at the half game 1, and until The Immaculate Overreaction and the subsequent return of The Miracle and his two killer threes, the Lakers were playing quite nicely. They got suckerpunched by the wheelchair drama. Pow!
LOS ANGELES
We the people in LA don't allow Kobe's name in the same sentence as. THE ONE AND ONLY MAGIC JOHNSON EITHER.
Tom (Chicago)
Pat, you mean Bulls fans don't wish Kobe played in the house that MJ built? I for one am glad that Kobe didn't come to Chicago. Stupid Bulls. Enjoy the Vinny Del Negro era...
Barry (Auburn, WA)
Kobe is too angry and too good to let this season just slip away in 4. The Lakers may not win it all this year but its going back to Boston. Forget about the 1st 2 games, per Kobe, its just begun.
Chris (Detroit)
I hate when people (Justin) bring logic into the conversation. Takes all the fun away.
mando(LA)
LA makes such a big deal about the fouls it was only 28 to 21 diff....the reason for the free throws 1. most were in act of shooting 2. only kobe and pau were in the paint.
Ed (Newport, RI)
I have heard that LA fans like to arrive to the game late. Does that help the Celtics? Also, what's the over/under on the amount of foul shots Kobe will take. I'm guessing 15.
Andy (Denver)
Here's to hoping my Lakers can make this series interesting tonight.
Buzzmaster (6:16 PM)
I think we will see Kobe go off tonight. Then again, I thought we'd see the same thing in Game 2.
Lamar Odom (LA)
I was in the paint too, missing shots. You might not have noticed due to my invisibility cloak.
Buzzmaster (6:16 PM)
Lamar Odom doing his Harry Potter impersonation.
Will (Denver)
Easily 20 foul shots tonight, refs will be in his hands
Chris (Detroit)
Just so people can see I know basketball. Sorry this series is over (not saying a sweep) Bun no way a team like Boston loses 4 of 6. The Laker fans are sounding like Piston fans. Oh, Kobe will turn it on.
Giana (Boston)
Nevermind their playing abilities, the big three ARE class acts, and it shows in how the team as a whole has grown this year. Would Rondo, Perkins, even Powe be who they are today without Garnett and Allen?
The Zen Master
Phill's April fools in June? haha I fooled all of you. Wanted to make it exciting. Now I am going to show all of you how follish you are and go on to sweep the Celts. We want to win it in Boston so that they can use their posters of "beat LA" to wipe their tears.
Dan (Colorado)
This isn't about the finals. But what do you think of this trade. Iverson, Kenyon, Camby, for Billups, Hamilton, Prince
Buzzmaster (6:18 PM)
What?? Have we gone into the Crazy Zone? Why would Detroit trade away their big trio?
Kobe (Newport Beach, CA)
I'm scoring 100 points tonite in valiant effort.
Buzzmaster (6:19 PM)
Kobe, the game starts in three hours and you're still in Newport Beach? OK. I've got some inside news sports fans, Boston wins tonight as Kobe mysteriously doesn't show up (litterally).
Giana (Boston)
I couldn't be more tired of the 'wheelchair drama'. I mean c'mon, if you saw your career flash before your eyes with a pop in the knee, not to mention during game one of your the first finals, you would take EVERY precaution.
Scott (LA)
tell dan to sned me whatever he is smoking
Herman (LA)
What a stupid MJ comparison. MJ didn't win until he was Kobe's age, and he had a lot more practice at being "the man" on his team than Kobe has had thus far. Far too soon to write him off because they may lose these finals. If anything, his growth and the development of the team are really similar to MJ. MJ fans were nervous too before they started winning. Plus MJ had many an off game, people tend to forget that as they look back.
Kobe (Newport Beach, CA)
You can carry me, Buzz Lightyear.
Marcus Camby
you are awful buzzmaster.
Chris (Detroit)
I found explination to the "wheelchair drama". Pierce was seen watching Chelsea practice when they were in LA (apparently a soccer fan). So he was just acting like a soccer player
Eric, Houston
Herman is partially correct. But if Jordan walked into the league with Shaq in his prime, he would have about 12 rings, not 6
Coleby (Clio MI) :
You know its kinda like my high school basketball coach tells me all the time. You have talent lamar Odom this is a shout out to you, Shoot the ball PLEASE!!!!
micah (chicago)
buzz, you still watching tv?? espn is reporting that donaghy has said that there was a conspiracy on the part of the NBA in the playoffs in 2002...maybe the conspiracy theorists today have some merrit.
Buzzmaster (6:23 PM)
Or it could be a desperate man trying to save his own hide. It will be interesting to see where this all goes.
Phil Exeter RI
On a scale of 1-10, how much does ESPN love Kobe?
Buzzmaster (6:23 PM)
About 18.
PG (Los Angeles, CA)
Buzz, Will there be any real NBA talk or is this just a bash the Lakers/Kobe chat? Amazing to me how puffed up the bandwagon Celtics are when they weren?t even filling their own arena last year. In contrast, the Lakers fans always sell out Staples, even during the few years the team struggled. So quit with the condescension. Oh, and let?s note that the Great Garnett is shooting 39% from the field for the series.
Buzzmaster (6:24 PM)
Bring it man. I'm just posting what I'm seeing. Lots of Celtics fans in here right now. Let's hear from the Lakers fans.
Brian (Philly)
Another scale from 1-10. It's like they just want numbers from you Buzz.
Eric, Houston
I just did that trade machine on ESPN, and I traded Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, and Greg Buckner straight up for LeBron James. Somebody call the Cavs!
Chris (Detroit)
Enough with Donaghy. If he had anything he would of shared it before he was convicted for a plea. Why suddenly decide to talk?
Buzzmaster (6:25 PM)
'Cause his bum is about to be thrown into the slammer.
Herman's in LA's fact checker (reality)
MJ's age at first title: 27Kobe's age: 29MJ's playoffs "line" at age 29: 35.1 ppg, 6.7 rebs, 6.0 assists, 2.0 steals, .9 blocksKobe's playoffs "line" at age 29: 31.4 ppgs, 5.8 rebs, 5.9 assists, 1.4 steals, .5 blocks
Buzzmaster (6:26 PM)
Post Addendum: MJ coming off of 3rd straight title at age 29.
micah (chicago)
it could be a desperate man trying to cover his behind (i hope that is all it is) but how bad would it be if it turns out to be the truth?? this would make the blacksox, spygate and all that pale in comparison.
Scott (LA)
most fans from LA are still at work. in boston, it is 6:30. in LA it is 3:30
Buzzmaster (6:27 PM)
Yeah, that's why I figured there'd be more Lakers fans in here. They're at work. What else is there to do at work?
Chris (Detroit)
But why wait this long? He knew what he was up against. Vick's codefendents didn't wait till they were convicted to make a deal. If he had anything he would of made a deal a long time ago.
Vladimir Radmanovic (Kobe's Trunk)
Hey, could someone let me out? I'd really like to jog around aimlessly for 6 minutes at a time.
TL (Boston, MA)
Still at work in Boston.....Just because the clock hits 5 doesn't mean it's time to go home...
Edwin (Los Angeles)
I'm beginning to realize I'm being ignored but then I'm also realizing I'm a loser for trying to grab attention with my funny questions, yes, I'm going back to work...
ESPN President
Buzz, you suck at this. you are fired. you haven't added anything good to this chat since you logged on. Thanks.
Buzzmaster (6:28 PM)
I beg to differ. Someone said I was funny.
Brad(NM)
Yyyyeah..cause nobody chatting in here right now is at work...right Buzz?
Nick (oregon)
Kobe's stat line for tonight: 40 pts 12 assts 8 rebs 4 stls 2 blcks.
Dave (LA)
Buzz, why do you find it impossible that Donagy is not telling the truth? What if it's legit? I don't really think it is but it should at least get one senator interested. Right?
Buzzmaster (6:29 PM)
With the way they've been going, I think my neighbor's dog's irregularity would call for a Senate hearing.
Tom (Chicago)
Here is my stat line for the night. Two brats, four beers and some chips...
Giana (Boston)
I'll ask my question again...do you think Rondo, Perkins or Powe would be the players they are this season without the additions of KG and Ray? Or could Delonte have taught them all this...
Buzzmaster (6:31 PM)
Probably not. Classic star players -- making those around them better.
David Stern (LA)
Don't worry Laker fans. The refs have their orders so you guys will win.
LA Fan
Celtics - Revelant after 21 years. I guess I would be excited too.Lakers = Always relevant. We don't have 21 year droughts.
Sen. Clinton (New York)
I would like to talk to Donaghy. Not like I have anything else to do now.
George (LA)
Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Ryan (LA)
I just made 3 of 4 crumpled up pieces of paper in the trash can from long distance..does Phil put me in for Vlad?
Paul Pierce (Staples Center)
I want an acting career just like jason taylor!
micah (chicago)
Ryan (LA), how's your D?? if you can play any D then Phil should consider playing you!
Mike: (Anaheim, CA)
If the Lakers win all three at home who do you think will prevail going back to boston for 6 and 7?
Buzzmaster (6:35 PM)
I don't know of LA wins all three at home. The key is Game 4. I think the Lakers win tonight. If they win Game 4, I think they win Game 5. So, I think the Celtics need to win Game 4 or else they go down 3-2.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
Buzz, who cares whether or not Pierce really hurt his knee or not...either way it was GENIUS! C's were struggling before that, then they came to life!
JJ (TX)
Buzz, lets put the gm hat on you. What do you think of this trade: San Antonio sends Oberto and Bonner to the Bulls for Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha
Buzzmaster (6:36 PM)
I think I don't want any of those guys.
Chris (Boston, MA)
Boston in 6 no doubts
James (Las Cruces, NM)
How many moving screens do the Celtics get hit with tonight I say at least 5? NBA referees are pathetic.
Buzzmaster (6:36 PM)
Is that a complaint about the refs or a statement?
Kevin (LA)
Mike(Anaheim, CA), Stick to non-sports questions here. We don't want to get Buzzz thinking too much.
Kobe Bryant (Staples Center)
The Lakers will win in 6!!!!
Brian Shaw (Los Angeles)
Put me in for Vlad. I've been retired for 5 years but I can do a better job guarding Pierce then Vlad.
Buzzmaster (6:37 PM)
Do we see Kobe guarding Pierce tonight? Interesting matchup.
Chris (Detroit)
Is it wrong of me to regret giving my mom my email address? Oh the forwards.
Barry (Auburn, WA)
Mike, the Lakers will win all 3 games at home and will bring home the championship from Boston. Gauranteed!!! It's on. The world just made Kobe mad!
Paul Pierce (Staples)
Owwwwwwwwww I think I broke my finger typing this
Paul Pierce
Wait I already have an acting career..didn't you guys see Game 1. Pretty good huh?
Buzzmaster (6:37 PM)
I love the Paul Pierce posts.
Tom (Chicago)
Chris, at some you have to come to the realization: you are going to have to block your mom.
Jason (Lake City, FL)
All you heard about before the series is the Lakers youth and bench. Do you think that Celtics bench has been and will be the difference on their way to their 17th title?
Buzzmaster (6:40 PM)
It was a pretty big factor in Game 2. Powe was good. But I've also seen that the Celtics bench has been a ton better at home than on the road.
Jason (Boston)
Pierce, not Kobe, has been the best player on the floor. Kobe has done a GREAT acting job as well, sobbing.. rolling his eyes.. YELLING at his teammates (per Curt Schilling).. so all those Pierce "acting" lovers, take a look at Kobe.
Buzzmaster (6:40 PM)
Please don't cite Curt Schilling.
Eddie House (Staples Center)
Lets be honest, I am going to be louder and more enthusiastic than any of the Lakers fans in the arena
ESPN RUMORS (Insider)
Paul Pierce has ripped his shoe lace and will not be able to participate in practice
Dave Roberts (Boston)
Uhhhhhhhhhhhh guys calm down, the series isnt over yet, even if the Lakers lose tonight............
Jay (New York)
It's about time Doc put in Powe. Big Baby has neither lift, nor offense.
Jason (Boston)
Eddie House! Eddie House! Eddie House! (Chanting)
Bryan (Boston)
In Class right now...you wouldn't believe the nunber of bandwagoners there are wearing Celtics jerseys.
Jack Nicholson (Staples)
I get pretty enthused in the 15 minute intervals I stay awake.
Aaron (Toronto)
This game makes the series...winning in LA will be very hard for boston, but very capable of happening....im tired of people saying pierce flopped, and I'm a lakers fan. Pierce has been lights out this series, injured or not! Go Lakers!
Buzzmaster (6:44 PM)
WARNING: Tangent....I never put two and two together and realized that Sean McManus, aka president of CBS Sports, was Jim McKay's son. Interesting.
Magic (Staples)
yummmmm that was the best popcorn ever on Sunday
Jay (LA)
Why is the finals schedule 2-3-2 when the rest of the playoffs follow a 2-2-1-1-1 scheme? It seems to give momentum to the lower seeded team going into games 6 and 7 if they can hold at home.
Buzzmaster (6:44 PM)
But it also puts pressure on them to win three straight at home. That's tough.
micah (chicgo)
kobe is the best player playing the game today...i still hate him!
Adrian (Las Cruces, NM)
Why aren't any of my comments showing?Kobe should get double "T" for his childish antics tonight.
David Stern (Los Angeles)
Thank goodness the flopping rule didn't go into effect until next year, because I would have to fine Pierce 100,000 dollars.
Jason (Boston)
Buzz, I haven't been here long enough, what's your prediction for the game? The series?
Buzzmaster (6:46 PM)
I think the Lakers win tonight. They HAVE to.
Eric, Houston
I keep hearing about Pierce for MVP, but what about KG? 21/14, while guarding the lane like its his personal property in the wild west. He is the MVP so far
micah (chicago)
buzz, good to see you are still managing to work and watch tv but mcmanus being mckays son wouldn't be putting 2 and 2 together, it would be more like putting 2 and 3 together.
Al Gore (The Sun)
The darn internet keeps eating my comments. None of mine are getting through.
George (Boxborough, MA)
Wait a sec....Didn't Kobe have a possible season ending right pinky owie earlier this year? How come Laker fans never mention this. We all know, without your pinky, you may as well stop living.
Paul (Portland, OR)
1) Why on earth would Pierce fake an injury? If you are found out it would be awfully embarassing.2) Considering reports of him limping after Game 1, you'd have to be a pretty good actor to make the limp convincing and make sure you were favoring the correct leg.
Buzzmaster
The other buzzmaster is a doppleganger do not trust him.
Buzzmaster (6:47 PM)
I love that word.
Buzzmaster (6:48 PM)
Buzzmaster. No, just kidding. Doppleganger.
Allen (Los Angeles, CA)
Steve Kerr, B.J. Armstrong, and now Will Perdue are all on the record that Kobe's skills are on par with MJ's.Don't you think they would be the best judge of that, not some fan or analyst?
Stuart (Chicago)
MOP- tonight- I am going with Ray Allen as Boston goes up 3-0
Jason (Boston)
Wait, is the Buzzmaster now different then the Buzzmaster at 10AM?
Buzzmaster (6:49 PM)
Yes. He's a bit more tired and a LOT more hungry.
Compulsive Refresh Clicker (Internet)
You love the word "buzzmaster"? tsk tsk. such narcissism
Chris (Detroit)
Pierce limping to his car after Game 1. Have you ever tried to walk when half your leg is wrapped up?
Morgan (boston)
Wheres my comments? Pierce has made the case for MVP, he is the emotional leader on offense and to an extent on defense of the team leading 2-0 with great stats to boot.
Buzzmaster (6:51 PM)
OK folks. Chris Sheridan will be stopping by soon to take over the reins of this here chat. Enjoy the game tonight!
Buzzmaster (7:22 PM)
Sorry, folks. It seems Chris has been tied up. Hang tight ... NBA.com's Rob Peterson is going to be jumping on soon from courtside!
Rob Peterson (7:30 PM)
Hola, people...
Rob Peterson (7:32 PM)
We're here at STAPLES watchin' a few players shoot around, watchin' NBA TV get set up, watchin' Brian Scalabrine schmooze Mark Jackson (or M. Jackson according to the chyron on Sunday night...)
LB (maine)
bout time
Rob Peterson (7:32 PM)
Good to see you too, LB...
Kobe (Staples Center)
Will I break away from the triangle offense and do my own thing tonight?
Rob Peterson (7:34 PM)
Faux-be, I think the real Kobe will stay within the offense early as he's done in the series, but when they need him to take over late, I think he'll do his thing ... The Celtics may have something to say about how close Kobe gets to the rack, but I have a feeling Mr. Bryant will be a little more aggressive tonight.
Jeff (Los Angeles, CA)
Why are so many people panicking about Lakers losing on the road. Boston has dominated at home. Lakers where a couple rebounds away in game 1 and a dozen free throws short in game 2. It's not as bad as analyst make it. Is the panick warranted or people are just fooled by the home court advantage stats
Rob Peterson (7:36 PM)
Jeff -- It's no time to panic, but only three teams have come from down 2-0 in Finals history -- '69 Lakers, '77 Blazers and '06 Heat. Then again, I wouldn't count Kobe out. Dude's a closer.
Asbi (Brunei)
Hi guys, do you think Lakers will win if they play like in the fourth quarter in game 2? Can they do it with equal effectiveness this time?
Rob Peterson (7:38 PM)
The Lakers did seem a little tight in the first 88 minutes of the series. The seemed more free late in the fourth, no forcing shots, taking what the Cs' defense gave them (mostly open shots...)Phil Jackson said momentum couldn't be carried across country, but I'm sure the Lakers will ride the STAPLES Center crowd early.
Damaric Dallas Texas
Kobe will get it together and lead the Lakers to three straight wins at home and go back to boston to close it out
Rob Peterson (7:39 PM)
That's bold...
Rob Peterson (7:40 PM)
SportsNation Rob Peterson: (7:36 PM ET ) Jeff --It's no time to panic, but only three teams have come from down 2-0 in Finals history -- '69 Lakers, '77 Blazers and '06 Heat. "I'm an idiot. It was Celtics in '69. (I knew that...). Thanks, Mitch in NY.
Adrian (California)
How much do the Lakers miss Andrew Bynum in this series?
Rob Peterson (7:41 PM)
Adrian -- Great question.A lot, I think. He would really help on the boards and take pressure off Odom and Gasol. And sometimes, it's the space you take up that frees space for your teammates. So, a lot. If the Lakers were fully healthy, I think this would be a completely different series.
LB (Maine)
Andrew Bynum isn't walkin through that door...
Rob Peterson (7:44 PM)
Funny....
Harold (Los Angeles)
Why don't the Lakers concentrate on one of the 3 headed monster like they did against the Spurs? Except for game 3, Ginobli was ineffective. If they concentrate on either Pierce or Allen...now I'm just babbling..
Rob Peterson (7:48 PM)
Harold, you're not babbling. There's a legitimacy to that, er, those thoughts.I wouldn't be surprised if the Lakers concentrated on taking away one of the Big Three. The Lakers also need to pay attention to Rondo, too, though. He was all over the place in Game 2.
Mike (East Windsor)
I think it's unfair the media is already blaming Kobe, it's not his fault. It's a team effort, yes Kobe is the main man on the team, but come on. With Bynum not there, it's tough. Agree?
Rob Peterson (7:49 PM)
Mike --The Lakers win as a team and lose as a team, but Kobe needs to be more aggressive on offense. That'll open things up for his teammates.
shivan (indy)
How does the late come back by the Lakers affect Boston in game 3?
Rob Peterson (7:52 PM)
Shivan --If the Lakers can carry any of that feeling from the end of Game 2 to Game 3, they'll be in great shape.I need to throw in one of my Bucks fan references in to explain real quick. In the 2001 East Finals, the Bucks were waxing -- WAXING -- the Sixers in Game 6 in Milwaukee. At one point, the Bucks had a 40-point lead...Iverson had been struggling, but went nuts in the fourth quarter. The Sixers cut the lead to 10 (I threw a TV tray...).The Sixers didn't win that game, but AI said that game helped him find his rhythm and the Sixers took Game 7 in Philly and went to the Finals.I don't know if the Lakers will do that tonight, but I've seen it happen.
Sen (Orlando)
Do you think if they started Sasha and put him on Ray and had Kobe on Paul, would that make a difference?
Rob Peterson (7:54 PM)
Sen, good question... But I think Phil likes D-Fish's leadership and experience at the start of games. It would be quite the switch ... but maybe Sasha could get into the game a little earlier.
Black Jesus (Oregon)
Rob, I've never heard of you, could you tell me your credentials?
Rob Peterson (7:55 PM)
BJ --Worked for NBA.com since 2001, covered the NBA in various capacities since 1996, worked for the Bucks as a tape editor for four years in the early '90s.My dad is a coach and my grandfather was a hoops coach.Basketball is in my blood.Sometimes I wonder if it's worth being fired for running on the court right now and shooting around during pre-game.So far, I've resisted the urge.
Sen (Orlando)
Rob, no Fish stays and Vlad goes. So Derek, Sasha, Kobe, Lamar and Pau start. Have Kobe guard Paul at SF.
Rob Peterson (7:56 PM)
Sen, there you go.I'll relay that to Phil. ;-)(Yeah, I did a winky face. Get over it.)
shawn (fort worth)
what the hell why cant i see my comments
Rob Peterson (7:57 PM)
Because I need to post them... So, have a good question and you'll see your "comments".
Vinnie (NYC)
Why is Lamar Odom not dominating this series? With Kobe getting doubled constantly and KG and Gasol battling Odom should be having a field day out there.
Rob Peterson (7:58 PM)
Vinny, good to see you back in the chat. That's been the question about Lamar throughout his career: he's talented, but what about the hunger and consistency.Maybe some home cookin' at STAPLES will help him feel comfortable. But he needs to get aggressive on O, as do the rest of the Lakers. Push the issue, make the Celtics react instead of dictate.
Kevin (Irvine, CA)
Hey I think the Lakers bench is overrated. I like the Lakers, but I think their bench is overrated even with the stats. What do you think Rob?
Rob Peterson (8:00 PM)
Kevin --I don't think they're overrated, but they have played poorly in this series. They have seemed overwhelmed by the moment or moments.I think being in a familiar place will help them. It usually does.
Ahron(Cali)
If the Lakers win the next three, do you think they will win it all, or do you think that Boston homecourt will prevail?
Rob Peterson (8:02 PM)
Ahron --Interesting question. Only two teams -- the '04 Pistons and '06 Heat -- have won the middle three games at home.I guess we'd have a trend, wouldn't we (every even year...).Anyway, if the Lakers do win the middle three games, they'd have two to win one. But they looked lost in Boston.I guess we'll need to address that if it happens. But it's fun to think about.
shawn (fort worth)
rob what are the celtics chances of sweeping the lakers?
Rob Peterson (8:04 PM)
Better than the Lakers' chances of sweeping the Celtics. Ha!But, I'm guessing the Lakers win one, maybe two here. But don't quote me.
Andy (Malden, MA)
If Rondo is supposedly tearing up the Fisher and the Lakers, how come Tony Parker didn't run them off the court? Isn't TP one of the fastest PGs in the league?
Rob Peterson (8:05 PM)
Andy -- great question.I think part of it had to do with Ginobili's health. His ankles were mush and the Lakers could play him for the drive, taking away one of SA's strength. The Celtics have spread the floor well so far. The Lakers, not so much.
Michael (Clovis, Ca)
As a Laker fan, I am totally excited they made it to the Finals. Although they have put themselves in a big hole, with Kobe, you can't count them out yet (see Game 2, 4th Quarter). But when I realize that next year they will add Bynum to this mix, letting Gasol play PF, Lamar at SF, keeping Kobe at SG, and with Fisher at PG, WOW!!! And with most of their bench coming back next year, this will be a team with so many options; I get goose bumps already thinking about next year.
Rob Peterson (8:06 PM)
Michael, it's not quite time to think about next year yet, but I can understand you're excitement. With Bynum back in the fold, I think the Lakers will be favorites not only to return to The Finals, but to win it.Still, there's time to win this one. So don't despair.
Kevin (Irvine, CA)
Hey Rob sorry if I'm asking this. Wasn't the format 2-2-1-1-1 format before in the finals? Did they change it for cost purposes and to limit traveling time?
Rob Peterson (8:08 PM)
Kevin, in 1984, the Lakers and Celtics went 2-2-1-1-1. The NBA changed it the next year to 2-3-2.Travel's a killer coast-to-coast in a 2-2-1-1-1. I know people don't like 2-3-2, but no one seems to complain that the World Series has been like that for eons. You still need to win four, at home on the road, wherever. Man up and win.
Jun (LA, CA)
You think Kobe is playing selfish again?
Rob Peterson (8:09 PM)
Jun --Nope, I just think the Celtics defense has been especially tough. Kobe didn't shoot well against the Lakers in the regular season either, so ... he's been having trouble. For the Lakers to win, he needs to have a breakout game.(And everyone goes -- duh!)
Corey (Philadelphia)
How do you expect Lamar Odom to perform after Phil Jackson called him out in post game press confrence?
Rob Peterson (8:10 PM)
Corey --He has to. All of the Lakers need to step it up.The Lakers' Big Three need to play like the Celtics' Big Three.
V Baller
Do you see parallels between this years Finals and 2006 Finals? Up and Coming team that has never been to the finals (Mavs/Lakers) vs. team of veterans and hall of famers looking for their first rings ala Boston/Miami?
Rob Peterson (8:12 PM)
V-Baller (may I call you V-Ball?) --Interesting comparison. I wouldn't say the Celtics are hungrier... I don't think the Lakers would have made it this far if they weren't hungry, but their window to win is smaller than this Lakers' team.As Ray Allen said in a media day presser, you never know when you're going to be back here. You need to make the most of it.So, the Celtics realize that at least.
Mike (Buffalo NY)
How do you see Phil reacting to the stifling D from games 1 and 2? More iso for Kobe or do you see him trying to force Kobe to get others involved late into the game.
Rob Peterson (8:13 PM)
Mike --The Lakers need to move the ball as they did throughout the season. It's been a little stagnant in the first two games...Kobe's been struggling, but so has everyone else.
Bill Walton (Bristol, CT)
Is this NBA basketball game going to be the best game since the invention of the NBA? Is it going to be amazing?
Rob Peterson (8:15 PM)
I agree, and you'll be here to see it.Have fun.
David (RI)
They have been both been mentioned, but not associated really. Is Kobe/LA struggling because of the D, or is the D getting a good wrap because LA is struggling?
Rob Peterson (8:17 PM)
David --A little of both. If the Lakers do well, then you'll have why is the Cs defense suffering. You can almost predict the next day coverage on who won the game.Right now, everyone worries about the Lakers. If they win the next two, you'll get stories about how the Lakers are rejuvenated, etc.I, for one, can't wait for the game to start tonight so we can stop guessing and start watching.
Dickey (LA, CA)
This might sound crazy but do you think the Lakers have no urgency because they realize they're the better team? Esp with Bynum? I think the Celtics know that is probably their one and best shot at rings whereas the Lakers, esp the younger bench might be thinking we have years ahead of us and we have Bynum coming back next year.We can talk about defense, rebounds, the big 3, fouls, etc. but when it comes down it, it's just who wants it more and it looks the Celtics want it more.
Rob Peterson (8:20 PM)
Dickey --Interesting theory ... interesting.Hmm, the Lakers not playing well because they're the better team.Kind of crazy and I don't agree, but the Celtics did appear more hungry than the Lakers in Games 1 and 2.But that could have just been the energy of the building. I was close to courtside and I had to stand for 50 percent of the games because everyone else was standing and I couldn't see.
Tim (Kansas)
Do LA fans really think they have a shot at winning this thing??
Rob Peterson (8:21 PM)
Yes, and it's not over. Until someone wins four, it's not over. There's still a chance and still hope for Lakers fans.Still, Cs fans should feel good they have two under their belts.
shawn (fort worth)
rob do you think kobe and pierce hve a scoring duel tonight?
Rob Peterson (8:23 PM)
Shawn --I would welcome that. I think everyone would.I love scoring duels. I know people think defense wins championships (no, no, no -- balance wins championships...), but offense keeps people on the edge of their seats.
Tom (Chicago)
That guy is a genius. The West is such an easy conference that the Lakers should easily be able to get the NBA Finals year after year...
Rob Peterson (8:24 PM)
Which guy? Me?When Bynum returns, the Lakers will be the favorites to win the West next season.Simple.
Brian (San Diego, CA)
Can the triangle offense (or better yet, this Laker incarnation attempting to run it) really beat a great defense?
Rob Peterson (8:26 PM)
Brian --Yes, I think it can, but it depends on how well the Lakers other than Kobe operate in it.Kobe can't do it alone, the other guys need to step up and make it easier on Kobe. That being said, the triangle needs a "bailout guy", someone you can throw the ball to with the shot clock running down and can get his own shot or create a great shot.MJ did it in Chicago, Kobe has done it for LA.It hasn't worked anywhere else.I have my theories.
Justin (Toronto, ON)
What's the over/under with celebrities at the game tonight? there were a lot in Boston but I'm sure that will be more then doubled in LA
Rob Peterson (8:28 PM)
Justin --Well, I know there are at least 20 A-listers schedule to be here. And those are the people with their own season tickets.I don't see any yet, but they'll be here. This'll be a great atmosphere tonight.
Tom (Chicago)
No, Dickey, the guy with the theory that the Lakers aren't playing as well because they don't have urgency. While LA will be the favorite, it doesn't mean it's going to be easy. The West is still stacked.
Rob Peterson (8:28 PM)
Tom --Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification...
Drake MA
How about that halftime show about Powe? from rags to riches and an amazing game 2 in the Finals!
Rob Peterson (8:30 PM)
Powe is one of the better stories in the league. It's good to see someone who's worked hard do as well as he has.
Rob Peterson (8:32 PM)
Everyone ... I have time for one more question. Jack Nicholson needs my seat....
Rob Peterson (8:33 PM)
Everyone, I'm gonna head out a little early... set up's different here. Thanks for all your questions. Entertaining as always. Thanks!
Buzzmaster (8:40 PM)
Thanks, Rob! So is everyone geared up for this game or what?
Buzzmaster (8:41 PM)
Watching footage right now of Stern answering questions about Donaghy. Gotta give to the guy .. he doesn't back down from the tough questions .. sad that this has to loom over the Finals though.
Chris (Detroit)
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
T.O
Better getcha ya popcorn!!!!
Shawn, LA, Ca
I ready for a battle!!!
Brian (Philly)
I'm in from the start Buzz, unless there's another guy pressing the wrong button or Deebo doesn't show up by halftime.

David Stern
Lets go CELTICS!!!(opps I wasn't supposed to say that was I?)
Kobe

Buzzmaster (8:48 PM)

Kobe
You can't stop me with my HYPER DUNKS!!
KG
I will dominate tonight!
Luke Walton
Sorry dad, I am gonna demolish your team!!! Get well soon though!
Rajon Rondo
Hey guys how many open looks do you think i should turn down tonight because i dont trust my shot?
Paul Pierce (Staples Center)
Hey Curt, thanks for having my back about the fake knee injury in Game 1. Was it as good as your fake bloody sock?
Pierce
I'm not the best actor in the building tonight, i'm screwed now.
Sasha (Home Locker Room)
Machine ready. Machine will take out Pierce's other knee. Machine like.
Sam I am
I wonder how many shots it will take to ruin the chemistry of the team.
Vlad Rad
Remember last game when I bricked bad 3's or turned it over on 4 straight possessions. Yeah, sorry about that.
Buzzmaster (8:53 PM)
Ohh.. national anthem time .. stand up and take off your hats ...
Shaq
I'm an actor and a player, how am I not there?!
Manu (San Antonio)
I refuse to watch. Nobody flops in this game. Why won't they do the play I invented?
Brent Barry
I still think I got fouled...
Pau Gasol (Los Angeles)
I'm going to put my best flopping foot forward tonight and dominate these fools
KG
Breathe in, now slooowly.... breathe out.
Buzzmaster (8:59 PM)
We are minutes away from game time! Let's do this! I've got my Dr. Pepper and Cheetos! I'm ready to roll!
Phil Jackson
Time to outcoach my worthy opponent...hahahaha..who am I kidding?
Buzzmaster (9:01 PM)
Alright, folks .. let's get your take on this ... what do the Lakers need to do to get back in this series?
David, VA
Kobe needs to take every other shot
Brian (Philly)
Drive to the hoop, feed off the crowd, and believe that your better than the Celtics.
Chris (Detroit)
They have to play aggressive. Boston had a hard time when the Pistons played aggressive. They need to dicate not let Boston dictate.
Vinnie (NYC)
Its all on Odom... the guy has the opportunity to dominate the series and he has done nothing
Sahil (Toronto, Ontario)
Lakers need to drive to the basket, especially Kobe, and contain Paul pierce. If they can do that they will win.
Ryan (San Diego)
Just play the game, they're a great home team. Plus stern has this fixed to go 7...so basically what i'm saying is they just have to show up
Tom (Chicago)
The Lakers need to penetrate and kick. Kobe and Lamar should be able to drive to the basket off the dribble and kick it out to the shooters. Go to the basket!
Dean (sydney Australia)
Pray ?
Buzzmaster (9:07 PM)
Game is under way! Kobe already 0-1!
Taka (Riverside, CA)
Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom needs to score 30-40 points combined.
Mikey (Fontana CA)
Kobe needs to set the tone early. He seems a bit cocky, knowing he can get off whenever, and then its too late. I expect Kobe to have a great first half. But the lakers are going to lose.
Paul (Anchorage, AK)
Lakers need to relax. They were way to tight in games 1 and 2. Play hard, but don't play desperate.
Buzzmaster (9:08 PM)
Odom with an early foul.
Greg (Boston)
I assume that wasn't a foul, right lakers?
Franky (Chicago)
Yeah, I would worry about Rondo and see how he performs. If he's fine, then the Celts will be fine.
Chris (Detroit)
So is complaning about people complaining about the refs just as bad?
Buzzmaster (9:11 PM)
Sloppy game so far.
Buzzmaster (9:12 PM)
Rad with the 3! Lakers up 6-2
Tom (Chicago)
I want to complain about people complaining about people.
Meredith (L.A.)
Celtics are piling up fouls early.
Brian (Philly)
No flow with Boston, and LA driving early.
Franky (Chicago)
You know, the Celst have pretty good interior defense. I don't think people give them a lot of props. They do a prety good job to try and contain the ball in the paint.....but once again, DO NOT ALLOW KOBE IN THE PAINT! LOL!!
Brian (Philly)
You want to be on FOX News Tom?
nick(ny)
goodnight celtics fans, be happy if you keep this game within 20 points by the end
Vinnie (NYC)
Boston isnt closing the lanes like they did in Game 2
Matt (IN)
Buzz, someone just said LOL and you posted it. I'm disappointed in you
Buzzmaster (9:18 PM)
I'm disappointed in myself. Didn't see it until it was too late. I can only ask for your forgiveness.
Ron(RI)
Good start so far. I honestly think if Boston does not win game 3, they wont win ANY games at Staples.
Franky (Chicago)
I don't know but the Celts just play different on the road. They are VERY unusual on the road.
Marc (Malden, MA)
The Celtics should not be running pick and rolls for Pierce. Radmonovich cannot guard him 1 on 1 and going pick/roll only helps the Lakers defense.
Chris (Detroit)
Interesting move, Kobe on Rando. Which creates a huge miss match on the other end.
Jonathan (Birmingham, AL)
This is EXACTLY what L.A. needed...to Set the tone EARLY and jump out to a quick lead.
Vinnie (NYC)
I never thought I'd say this but... sit Lamar down and bring in Walton.
Buzzmaster (9:24 PM)
2nd foul on Ray Allen ..
Chris (Detroit)
So far this game is not holding up to the build up. Nor has this series in my opinion
CG (Waco)
The Lakers need the game to be a fast paced game the whole way and wear Boston down. There is only a one day rest between this and the next game. Use that youth to your advantage.
David (Charlotte)
Doesn't mean that it ends up with a Celtics championship, but when both teams play their best, the C's seem to be better. Lakers have to work incredibly hard on offense. Celtics dictate everything.
David (Omaha, NE)
Looks like Kobe is going to have himself a NIGHT
Buzzmaster (9:26 PM)
Celtics aren't dictating much right now ... haven't found their flow yet ..
Tom (Chicago)
I have to agree with Chris. After watching a great Stanley Cup Final, the NBA Final has been a huge letdown.
Buzzmaster (9:28 PM)
Huge block from Garnett! Then he misses the jam! Ouch!
Taka (Riverside, CA)
Did anyone just see Rondo's fake and then assist to James Posey? Man, that guy is talented.
Brian (Philly)
Games 1 and 2 were unique, great games. but we expected too much. This is sloppy and LA should be up 15 not 3.
Ron (NYC)
Did someone just compared hockey to basketball?? Seriously??
Marc (Malden, MA)
Rondo has been doing that fake all season long. The Lakers should be embarrassed that they're still falling for it.
Buzzmaster (9:32 PM)
Who are these announcers? ''You don't have to win a championship to be a champion?'' What, is this little league? It's the pros man! You gotta win it all if you want to be called a champion.
Goose (Boston, MA)
I am amazed people are shocked that the team with the best record in the NBA, the team that was #1 in defense in the NBA and the team that swept the season series is up 2 - 0.
Brian (Philly)
KG saying the NBA title felt untouchable....well you were in Minnesota that's why.
Buzzmaster (9:33 PM)
No. 2 on Pierce ..
Vinnie (NYC)
Buzz don't talk negatively about your employers!!
Buzzmaster (9:34 PM)
I'm a rebel .. I tell it like it is!
Buzzmaster (9:35 PM)
Tie game with a minute left in first quarter ...
Chris (Detroit)
Buzz do you think its wrong these players get to handle the trophy before they have won it? What do others feel?
Buzzmaster (9:35 PM)
Good question .. thoughts? Should NBA guys be like hockey players and refuse to touch the championship trophy until they win it?
Tom (Chicago)
Buzz, you are dead on. You can't be a champion without a title. The wussification of America continues...
The Suits (Bristol)
Watch it, Buzz. We're watching you.
Buzzmaster (9:36 PM)
And I'm watching you! Ha!
Brandon (Omaha)
I think they need to earn the right to touch the trophy
Tom (Chicago)
The Stanley Cup is unique because of the history so it shouldn't be touched before it is won. The NBA trophy is made every year, so it's not a big deal...
John (Cloquet, MN)
I think holding the trophy before you actually win the thing is pretty much tempting fate.
Buzzmaster (9:38 PM)
End of 1st Q - Celtics 20, Lakers 20
Franky (Chicago)
Man, Odom just does not look like the Odom Laker fans want...
Steve
The Big 3 only have three after the 1st... and it is tied.
Taka (Riverside, CA)
I thought the Lakers were completely more aggressive than the Celtics. KG and Pierce had ZERO points. How can they be tied?
Brian (Charlotte, NC)
Big 3 go 1-12, LA shoots 12 FTs and score tied after 1st quarter. Does not bode well for Lakers.
John (Cloquet, MN)
I just realized that the if the Lakers win the series, they will deny Garnett a championship. The Lakers moved from Minneapolis. I think it would be kind of ironic that a team that moved from Minnesota could take away Garnett's shot at a title.
Brandon (Omaha)
It pains me to watch Cassell keep putting up shots!
D Rochester, NY
Is there any reason why Sam Cassel thinks he is Kobe Bryant right now?
Buzzmaster (9:48 PM)
Phenomenal ball movement there ... Lakers lead back to 7
Vinnie (NYC)
I was waiting for a Charlie Ward toss featuring Farmar right there
Matt (Hoboken, NJ)
Lakers were sick of being called soft. Nice job by Farmar to stand up to PJ Brown. The Lakers are the better team and were -200 pre-series for a reason.
Ian (Salt Lake)
Buzz is up grabbing a beer during commercial.
Buzzmaster (9:52 PM)
Dr. Pepper, actually.
Dan, MA
Can we please, for the love of all that is good, get Cassell out of the game???
Josh (Texas)
Cassell is like a mini version of Stephen Marbury. Thinks he's good but hurts the team more than help it.
Marc (Malden, MA)
PJ Brown was just laughing at him like, "really little man, you wanna get in my face, you better get a step ladder."
David (Omaha)
Boy, Kobe can make you look pretty silly
Marv Albert (Staples)
A spectaculor move by Kobe Bryant!!!
Buzzmaster (9:55 PM)
Lakers extend the lead to 9
Greg(Cali)
Dang Garnett is a freak but I like the Lakers aggresiveness right now
Brian (Philly)
And KG takes the high-percentage shot.
CG (Waco)
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk!!
Vinnie (NYC)
They have got to stop airing the Bird/Magic commercial. I'd rather watch an entire hour of the Magic Johnson show than that commercial
Tom (Chicago)
Did someone just really quote a Shaq rap lyric? Wow. Just wow.
Chris (Detroit)
Spike Lee? Traitor.
Brian (Philly)
Spike had the NY hat so he's not guilty of bigamy.
Vinnie (NYC)
Does some one here actual KNOW Shaq rap lyrics?? Wow. Just wow.
Brian (Boston, MA)
Celtics are playing terrible but they are still in the game. While the Lakers are playing better then they have
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
The Lakers are ROCKING the Staple Center.
Matt (Hoboken)
Hey Paul Pierce - How'd it feel to get stuffed by Luke?
Randy (Michigan)
Key to this game has been Vlad not shooting very much.
David (Omaha)
If Kobe ever wants to be as good as Jordan he would have to play this good EVERY night
Brian (Philly)
Can the Lakers keep the pedal to the metal? Or will Boston let the Lakers hang themselves with missed FT's and occasional sloppy play?
CG (Waco)
Gasol is struggling badly on both sides on the floor.
Franky (Chicago)
Challenge Gasol......he ain't doing nothing so far.
Randy (Michigan)
Lakers 15 FT, Boston 2 FT...how does it feel bean town???
Buzzmaster (10:06 PM)
Is that the dude from Mad TV on the Denali commercial?
Mike(Hastings, NE)
As poorly as Boston is playing right now the game is still well within reach. L.A. better take advantage of Boston's poor play now while it lasts if they intend to win.
Marc (Malden, MA)
I have no problems with the FT difference. The Lakers have earned it. I won't be crying like a baby the way Lakers fans have been doing for 2 days.
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
Here's a stat for you, the Celtics have won the Finals 7 times and lost 0 times when leading the series 2-0, while the Lakers have won 0 times and lost 5 times when down 0-2.
Vinnie (NYC)
I am surprised Pierce isn't getting his ankle iced down right now
Rick (Harrison, TN)
The FT question has been answered. The Lakers have passed the Celtics difference now. So now LA has no beef for the rest of the series. Stop crying LA. What a bunch of babies.
Jacob (Amherst, MA)
Does Pau Gasol know that there's a basketball game tonight?
David (Rochester)
Gasol looks like he's sleepwalking out there.
Doc Rivers (Los Angeles)
I'm going into the locker room feeling pretty good right now. By far the worst we've played the entire postseason and we're still in the game.
Buzzmaster (10:19 PM)
HALFTIME - Lakers 43, Celtics 37
Buzzmaster (10:20 PM)
We're going to take a break and be back for the start of the second half!
Buzzmaster (10:40 PM)
Here we go! Second half!
JT (MA)
garnett needs to start making those jumpers that he's generally so good at, 1 for 9 for the half just doesn't cut it
Brandon (Louisville, KY)
How many times a game does Rondo average that terrible half fake behind his back thing? it's getting ridiculous
Deven Grover Fremont, CA
HERE WE GO! 2nd half.. Time for Kobe to take over the 3rd quarter and put this one away.
edmonton, canada
how are the celtics going to contain kobe? it looks like he's going to have another one of those big nights.....
John (Cloquet, MN)
Why do I get the feeling the Lakers are going to make a big run and put this game away?
Evan (San Francisco, CA)
Doesn't Rondo understand that you're supposed to fake the injury at home so that you can come back out to roaring home-town fans?
David (Glendora, CA)
The Lakers are in trouble if KG and Pierce get going. They're doing terrible right now and the Celtics were only down by six at the half.
CG (Waco)
Kobe just might get 50 tonight the way he's shooting.
Pau Gasol (LA)
Kobe can you give me some of your super secret stuff.
nate (williamsburg,va)
the celtics need to get out and run if they are going to have any chance, kobe is on a mission tonight!
RP (Merrimack, NH)
It wont matter if Kobe gets 50 if no one else contributes and the Celtics keep up their pace.
Ryan (San Diego)
Another quick healer on the Celtics...man those guys are good. Touched by angels
Krans, HI
Kobe can be on as much of a mission as he wants, the other 4 guys on the court need to be on a mission as well
nick (ny)
other than kobe and vujacic and maybe farmer for a few plays where are the lakers, they are non existant
CG (Waco)
You're right RP but the main thing the Lakers need to do speed the tempo up becasue all they're doing is playing into Boston's hands.
Marcus (NYC by way of Boston)
You can see Kobe getting tired. No way Vulavijicicc repeats his first half. P Double lets go son. KG is gonna get it Hype.
Mike (East Windsor)
Still a close game, come on Lakers!
Harold (WV)
Lamar Odom practically welcomed Ray Allen to the hoop that last drive.
David (Glendora, CA)
I'm realizing more and more that the Celtics are better than the Lakers. The only ones that are going to beat the Celtics are the Celtics.
Andrew (San Diego)
Why doesn't KG do that more? I feel like he can take it to the rim every time but he's been settling for 20 foot jumpers.
Buzzmaster (10:53 PM)
And all of a sudden it's a 2 point game ...
Reed: (San Diego):
Garnet can't buy a bucket
Buzzmaster (10:54 PM)
And KG with the game-tying bucket with 5 minutes left in the 3rd
Buzzmaster (10:55 PM)
And KG with the jumper to put the Celts ahead .. we've got ourselves a good one brewing here ..
Sub-Zero (Outworld)
LA needs to put its foot on Boston's throat.FINISH HIM
Krans, HI
You've got to love the passion Eddie House is playing with right now, can't blame him after sitting out the first two games. Series comes down to effort and who wants it more, main reason i'd give the edge to Boston
Josh (Texas)
This is pathetic. The Lakers are lucky that they are not behind by 20 right now with Boston missing a lot of open shots.
Brad (Nashville)
It just doesn't seem right that a team pushed to the brink by the Atlanta Hawks should be this close to a title
Brandon (Omaha)
I think that one reason that the Lakers are struggling and are going to continue to do so is because their bench is so inferior to that of the Celtics
John, MA
Someone needs to tell Brad from nashville playing for the FIRST time as a team in the playoffs is a WHOLE different thing than the regular season
Justin (RI)
If Pierce gets it going now, the Lakers should just not come out for the 4th quarter. Put Kobe out there by himself and see if they can stop him.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Vujacic needs to come back in, his hot hand is what the Lakers need right now.
Brandon (Omaha)
Maybe the Eastern conference isn't as inferior as people thought it to be since Atlanta was able to put up such a fight
Eddie (Ma)
Eddie House brought some serious energy, and now its up to the celts to keep playing with tenacity to finish this one out.
David (Glendora, CA)
I agree Brandon. Everyone hyped up the Lakers bench but the Celtics' bench is so much better, not to mention their starters too.
Adrian (Albany)
I think you'll see next season that the Hawks weren't a fluke, they have a lot of talent on that team and if they can have a leader they'll be a force in the East. I can see them landing the 5-spot with a over .500 record with relative ease.
Buzzmaster (11:02 PM)
KG finding his shot ... not good news for the Lakers.
Adrian (Albany)
Ohhhh, there he is! Odom finally showed up, I hope no one notices his late arrival, I wouldn't want him to be scrutinized in the post-game.
Brandon (Omaha)
Hey announcers...When does Kobe like a call?
Ryan (San Diego)
Good news for the Lakers though is that the 4th quarter is only 2 minutes away. And KG will disappear again
Mattyt (Somerville)
So what's LA's excuse tonight when they lose this one? They can't blame the refs, the C's should be down 20 the way this one has been called.
Matt (SLO, CA)
This is ridiculous, we are sucking wind.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Gasol is so soft, he gets hurt committing a foul.
Krans, HI
Ryan KG may disappear scoring wise at times but its the little things he does besides scoring that makes him great
Ken (Richmond, VA)
Jack's the only true Laker fan. The rest of those celebrities are just posers.
Dwayne (Greensboro, NC)
Good one going here. It appears as though it's gonna come down to who shows up in the fourth; Paul Pierce or everyone on the Lakers other than Kobe.
Buzzmaster (11:09 PM)
END OF 3rd Q - Celtics 62, Lakers 60
Drew (Irvine, CA)
Pierce needs to show up for the Celtics here in the 4th quarter.
Ken (Richmond, VA)
The Lakers should be embarrassed. No way that Boston should even be in this game let alone winning after 3 quarters.
Larry (French Lick)
The Lakers look demoralized. Is this really the best they have?
David (Glendora, CA)
Pierce and KG need to get hot in the 4th, they're due.
Buzzmaster (11:14 PM)
Here we go! And the Lakers take the lead back on the first shot!
Buzzmaster (11:14 PM)
And the Celtics answer! Oh yeah! This is going to be interesting!
Rudy (san diego)
Ok only Vujechic and kobe are allowed to shoot now!
Ian (Salt Lake)
NO LAKERS anywhere near that rebound.
Franky (Chicago)
Take it slow Boston, take it slow...
Brandon (Tulsa)
Where is Rondo?
Sid (Texas)
Odom needs to step up his game to give the Lakers a chance.
Andrew (San Diego)
Does Odom ever look in control going to the basket?
Paul (Lancaster,CA)
Good bye Odom. I hope LA ships your behind to the Bobcats.
Buzzmaster (11:20 PM)
Kobe obviously not happy with his FT shooting .. kicked the ball after that miss ...
Buzzmaster (11:20 PM)
Pierce with 5th foul
Ken (Richmond, VA)
Kobe kicked the ball. That should be a T. If that was Rasheed Wallace that would have been a T.
Chris (Detroit)
Does anyone want to take over this game?
Sid (Texas)
No T on Kobe b/c that would be #2 and automatic ejection and the officials will not call that.
Franky (Chicago)
Gotta admit, I'm impressed how the Celts are playing so far. Especially since the big three are not having such a big impact. Keep it up..
Dwayne (Greensboro, NC)
The Celtics deserve to win this game. But there is no way Kobe let's his team lose this one.
scott (fresno)
How can you be impressed with how either team is playing... only a big homer would say either team is playing well.
Buzzmaster (11:26 PM)
We're definitely waiting for someone ... anyone ... to step up and take control of this game. It's right there for the taking. Beuller? Beuller? Anyone? Anyone?
MIke (Miami, FL)
The NBA is fixed. ANd you're scared to put this b/c the NBA owns you.
Buzzmaster (11:27 PM)
Actually Toyota owns me. But point taken.
Brian (Philly)
I'm here for crunch time minutes Buzz. Lakers might have sleepless nights if they blow this game. Boston has no right winning and LA has no right losing. But that's what might happen.
Ryan (San Diego)
Vujacic is the only guy on the Lakers besides Kobe that doesn't look scared to take a shot and score
Franky (Chicago)
I thought Kobe was gonna have his points by now....
Chris (Detroit)
Totally agree with Scott. close game but not very well played.
Andrew (San Diego)
Seems like as good a time as any for KG to shake that "unclutch" tag and take over this game.
Buzzmaster (11:29 PM)
Kobe with the wiiiiiide open 3 to give the Lakers the lead ...
Marcus (NYC by way of Boston)
Neither team is playing well and thats because of the Celtics style. Grind it out with tough D, timely shooting and dominant rebounding. It does not take a genius to see why the Lakers are uncomfortable with this style of play.
David (Glendora, CA)
It's not happening for you today KG, pass the ball to someone else who can make it!
Franky (Chicago)
Yeah, Pierce is not feeling it.......at all.
Nick (Boston, MA)
Does Kobe ever not flail his arms after he loses the ball?
Buzzmaster (11:32 PM)
Gasol with the tip in!
Sid (Texas)
Of all the big men down low and Rondo come up with the board.
Ian (Salt Lake)
Always, Nick. It's as certain as Tim Duncan's look after he loses the ball.
David (Glendora, CA)
Man, when Pierce and KG slump, they SLUMP!
Maney (atlanta)
does paul pierce ever not flop his head pretending like he is getting hacked every time he dribbles towards the basket?
Chris (Detroit)
If LA wins this, do they come out of it feeling good about the rest of the series? I don't see how you can.
Buzzmaster (11:38 PM)
Lakers up 7 with 4 minutes to play ...
Joe (mn)
KG and pierce 5-29 ouch!
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
I like that the referees are letting them play for the most part now. For the most part a well officiated game no reason to complain.
Ryan (San Diego)
Chris, yes they will because this was the most pressure packed game for them. Must win and they are a little tight, you can see it. If they hold on I think you see a much looser team on Thursday and a much bigger lead late
CG (Waco)
LA better NOT feel good if they win this game. Boston has been hanging around with Pierce and KG non existant and it's still close.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Vujacic is so fast on defense; his effort is refreshing to see in the NBA.
Kenny (PA)
This game would be over if the Lakers would actually make some free throws.
Kobe Bryant (LA)
whaddya mean I can't hit Pierce in the face with my forearm?????
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Agreed Kenny, no excuse for missing this many free throws when you have the opportunity(unlike Game 2 of course).
Jackson (Los Angeles)
LA will have plenty to feel good about if they win this game tonight. Their frontcourt didn't play well in the game and they played very good defense on KG and PP to limit their points. We all know the Lakers won't miss their FTS and if Rondo keeps on passing up shots throughout this series, then its going to be tough for Boston to win one in LA
Kevin (Philly)
This will be the first time LA has beaten the Celtics this season so I think they have to feel good just knowing that they can beat the Big 3 and Boston.
Dwayne (Greensboro, NC)
You're right CG. Pierce and KG won't go 5-29 on Thursday. I see no reason to believe the Lakers will win 3 of the next 4.
Brian (Philly)
Lakers have to finish this game though.....still enough time for Boston.
Buzzmaster (11:47 PM)
Sasha with the huge shot!
Ian (Salt Lake)
Wow they are REALLY letting them play.
CG (Waco)
If the Lakers win Sasha is the Player of the Game in my opinion.
Planet Vujavic
Kobe doesn't need the ball. I'm the star
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Vujacic is the most exciting young player in the NBA when he's on. His defense is amazing and his rotation on the shot is amazing.
Sasha (LA)
I may look like Tom Cruise from "The Last Samurai" but that don't mean I'm ain't an absolute BEAST.
Chad (Portland, Oregon)
Derek, no more talking...you embarrass the state of Oregon with comments like that. I may argue that CP3 is just a skooch more exciting than Sasha.Don't claim sarcasm either...that just hurt.
Buzzmaster (11:51 PM)
Kobe with the huge FG .. and House with the 3 .. Lake Show needs a shot here
Buzzmaster (11:52 PM)
And Kobe answers! Celts down 6 with 38 seconds left ..
scott (fresno)
You cant stop Kobe... period
Ken (Richmond, VA)
Double team him, triple team him if you have to but whatever you do, don't let Kobe beat you.
Kevin (Washington, DC)
Kobe looks like he's caught a second wind here
Buzzmaster (11:54 PM)
GAME OVER - Lakers win!
Sid (Texas)
Game over, the series is finally getting interesting
scott (fresno)
Why did Boston quit????
Jimmy (RI)
imagine if Pierce showed up this game? Celts just need to win ONE GAME in LA.
Buzzmaster (11:56 PM)
