We'll be getting our NBA Finals pre-game chat started in about 10 minutes!
John Schuhmann (2:59 PM)
What's up everybody? I'm expecting a much prettier game tonight than we had on Tuesday. We're just six hours away, so let's get started...
Mickey (Hermosa Beach, CA)
John, Who are the refs for tonight's game?
John Schuhmann (3:01 PM)
http://www.nba.com/news/referee.htmlSteve Javie, Joe DeRosa and Tom Washington.
Steve, (Corona)
What's good John? Do you see tonight's game playing out the same as tuesday's?
John Schuhmann (3:03 PM)
Absolutely not. Game 3 was reminiscent of Spurs-Cavs: UGLY. Legs should be fresher tonight and more shots should find their way through the basket.
Jimbo Yuba City Ca.
I was Listening to the two ladies talk about game 3, and i was thinking, why did they not mention the fact that the lakers played great Defense! Thats what wins ball games in any sport! thank you.
John Schuhmann (3:05 PM)
Not sure which two ladies you're talking about, Jimbo. But the Lakers' D definitely deserves some credit, especially for KG's struggles. I think they're doing a pretty good job of pushing him away from the basket and forcing him to take longer and tougher shots.
Sean (Atlanta, GA)
Predict this right now: who will have a surprise performance off the bench tonight, a la Powe in game 2 or Sasha in game 3?
John Schuhmann (3:06 PM)
I'll go with Eddie House, Sean. He got some extended minutes in Game 3 when Rondo went down and shot 2-for-8. He could get into a rhythm with more time tonight.
JOE P(BOSTON, MA)
john,if you're boston do you double team kobe and gamble the three or do you leave him 1 on 1 with ray and pray for a rebound? i think leaving ray to guard kobe 1 on 1 was a mistake regardless of how well he was contesting....contesting doesn't mean blocking or forcing mistakes, and that's what they need kobe to do in my opinion
John Schuhmann (3:08 PM)
I leave him one-on-one, Joe. But I use Posey on him as much as possible. That big Sasha three from the corner in Game 3 was a result of KG jumping out to double Kobe up top. I'd let Kobe get his and try to keep the other guys under wraps.
John (Dallas)
John, I'll see your Eddie House and bet Jordan Farmar.
John Schuhmann (3:08 PM)
I could see that.
Carmelo Anthony (Denver)
Where will I be playing next season?
John Schuhmann (3:09 PM)
In every single NBA city (barring injury). But you'll play your 41 home games in Denver.
Jongsongha (Siem Reap Cambodia)
will kobe score a 50 point game in the finals
John Schuhmann (3:10 PM)
Nope.Even though I believe that the Celtics should let Kobe get his, their defense is still too good to allow 50 from Kobe.
Ronnie, Washington DC
How do you guys feel about allen, pierce, posey, garnett, and perkins on the floor at the same time? Though Ray isn't a PG he would have to be respected...No more roaming for kobe off Rondo and one of those soft laker defenders (excluding kobe) would get exposed on every trip down the floor
John Schuhmann (3:12 PM)
It's a good point and Doc Rivers brought it up yesterday. The Celtics made their run without Rondo. Here's Doc's quote:"It took the Lakers away from trapping. That was huge; that was the stretch we made the run. So that was good for us."The problem we had later when Farmar came in, he pressured the ball, and we struggled getting the ball into our sets with Rajon off the floor, and so we have to solve that, and we can."
Thomas (Boston)
KG and Pierce are sure to bounce back tonight right? Right??
John Schuhmann (3:13 PM)
Pierce: yes. He's the better offensive player.KG: Not so sure.
Chris (Detroit)
What other experts will be stopping by today?
John Schuhmann (3:14 PM)
Look up at the top of the page, Chris. The schedule's right there.
Herman (LA)
Who handles the ball for them if Posey plays instead of a pg? they already have trouble getting into sets when House or Cassell play. Also, the Lakers best line up is with Sasha, who would surely play more to matchup with a bigger celts backcourt
John Schuhmann (3:17 PM)
Valid point about the ball-handling, Herm. You get the bad with the good. Ray can bring the ball up, but they don't have anybody else who can penetrate and create like Rondo.
Ryan (Mpls)
not so sure on kg? he'll shoot 55% from the field tonight
John Schuhmann (3:18 PM)
You're on record, Ryan.
Josh (Santa Clarita, CA)
Do you see Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol having bounce-back performances against this Boston defense?
John Schuhmann (3:20 PM)
I don't see them having huge games, but they can't play as bad as they have been, for sure.Keeping them under wraps is one of my keys for the Celtics today.
Carl (PA)
just curious as to who all of the guru's think will win tonight.guru's being your colleagues......and you of course
John Schuhmann (3:21 PM)
I was pretty sure about the Lakers winning Game 3. Tonight, I'm totally on the fence. No clue.
Mark (Cleveland)
I saw a report Cavs were trying to get Michael Redd. This would kind of be like a Big 3 with Lebron, Redd, Big Z...certainly better than what they've got. Thoughts?
John Schuhmann (3:23 PM)
I like Redd with a playmaker (like LeBron). Don't like him when he's asked to make the plays himself. So, I'm for it. But I'd be interested to know what the Bucks are getting.
Darren (Los Angeles)
Any inside scoop on the rumor that Gallinari will only play for the Knicks or Nets? Will this scare other teams in the lottery away?
John Schuhmann (3:24 PM)
No more scoop than what you've read already, Darren. But remember that Yi supposedly didn't want to go to Milwaukee last year.
Chris (St. Paul, MN)
Ryan from MPLS, MN is only referring to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter...in the 4th KG will shoot 12% tops.
John Schuhmann (3:26 PM)
Give me the FGM and FGA for 12%.
Jake (Petersham, MA)
Do you think Tony Allen will get some minutes tonight? If so what kind of impact could he have?
John Schuhmann (3:30 PM)
Despite Doc Rivers mentioning Allen yesterday, I'd be pretty surprised if we see him tonight.Maybe if Kobe is going off and Doc needs some fresh legs on him. But Allen hasn't played more than 5 minutes since Game 7 of the Atlanta series (and that was major garbage time) and hasn't played at all since Game 4 of the Detroit series. Is Doc really going to call his number in Game 4 of the Finals?
John Schuhmann (3:30 PM)
My time is up. Up next: A specTACular chat, from Dave McMENamin!
Dave McMenamin (3:32 PM)
Looking forward to an Instant Classic tonight. Game 3 we got 2/6ths of the Big Three showing up to STAPLES (Pierce, Garnett, Gasol and Odom lost their games somewhere between Logan and LAX). Let's aim for at least 4/6ths tonight. Bring on the questions.
David Fairborn, OH
I'm a 23 year old male and I just got dumped. Give me a drinking game I can play tonight while watching the game. With friends of course. And we'll sleep on couches.
Dave McMenamin (3:35 PM)
Take a big swig everytime Vujacic adjusts his panty hose hairband if you really want to forget her.If you have a change of heart and just want to wallow in self pity, drink every time the Lakers crowd makes noise and actually appears to care more about the game going on than coordinating postgame plans for the VIP booth at club Les Deux on their Blackberries. You'll be stone sober.
Sean D. (Atlanta, GA)
Dave, What is more responsible for Odom's struggles, his nerves or Boston's D? Also, what do you expect from Odom tonight?
Dave McMenamin (3:38 PM)
I wrote this feature yesterday on how Odom can help himself get going:http://www.nba.com/finals2008/lakers_080611.htmlIt's certainly not nerves. He just needs to be more disciplined on offense (stay on the wing and in the post instead of trying to create off the dribble on the perimeter) and he needs to stay out of foul trouble so he can stay on the floor.
John NY, NY
Do you think if the lakers win game 4 tonight that they have a shot at winning the series?
Dave McMenamin (3:40 PM)
I'd say the team with Kobe Bryant in a best-of-three would have a very, very good shot.
Don (Washington, DC)
Who ever wins the game tonite wins the series. Agree?
Dave McMenamin (3:44 PM)
Don - Don't agree on that one. But, if the Lakers lose tonight, I don't think they can bounce back to win three straight against this Boston team.
Nate (St. Louis, MO)
Do you see anyone able to top the Lakers next year in the west?
Dave McMenamin (3:46 PM)
I'm getting a lot of comments calling me a Laker hater right now. To make up for it, I'll tell you this with a completely straight face: If Bynum comes back next year as the player he was in January and L.A. can keep Vujacic and Turiaf in the fold (and everybody stays healthy), L.A. could go 73-9 or better.
Bryan (Boston)
Since this is essentially another must win for the Lakers, do you think they will come out strong and play better than Game 3?
Dave McMenamin (3:48 PM)
They HAVE to play better than they did in Game 3 if they want to win tonight. KG and Pierce were 8-for-35 on Tuesday and L.A. only won by six. The Lakers better play much sharper if they expect to tie this series up.
Dustin (Portland)
Dave - Haveyou been to McMinnamins in Portland? Terrific brew. What do you expect from Rudy Fernandez and his jheri curl next year?
Dave McMenamin (3:50 PM)
I haven't, but I've heard great things. As for Rudy, I was speaking to a reporter from Barcelona the other day who was convinced that Fernandez will average double digits next year, and with the addition of a healthy Oden, Portland will vault into a top-5 team in the West. It could be homerism, the guy was from Spain, afterall.
John (Dallas)
Dave, I don't think your a Laker hater I just think your drinking game idea was a little over the top with Vujacic and the L.A. Fans. At least the L.A. fans can come up with an original chant.
Dave McMenamin (3:51 PM)
You think "Boston Sucks" is an original chant?
Phil (OH)
And the Choke award for game for goes to............
Dave McMenamin (3:54 PM)
Lakers fans (in attendance) for not giving their team the lift it deserves for getting to the Finals and playing a crucial Game 4 at home. The Lakers fans with the flags on their cars, gathering around their TVs to watch and yell tonight will be great. Jerry Buss should organize an emergency "Free Red Bull Night" to get the crowd at STAPLES into it tonight.
Luis (Los Angeles)
Do you think Phil should not start Vlad Rad due to picking up quick fouls and putting Lakers into the penalty way too early and changing the tempo of the game?
Dave McMenamin (3:56 PM)
Vladdie is "Mr. First Quarter" if you've watched him all playoffs. He usually gets something going early when Kobe is in passing mode, so I don't think him starting is going to change at this point. The Lakers have played 18 games in the playoffs with the same starting line up, Phil isn't pulling a switcheroo at this point.
Vern (LA)
Regardless of what happens in the Finals, do the Lakers trade Odom in the offseason?
Dave McMenamin (3:57 PM)
He's had his inconsistencies in the postseason, but no way should they trade him. He is a perfect third option after Kobe and Pau for that team.
Preston (Richmond)
Anyone watching the Open? I've heard rumors there are more than two people playing today, but it has yet to be confirmed.
Dave McMenamin (3:59 PM)
A golf question, in the middle of a Lakers-Celtics Finals featuring the MVP vs. the Defensive Player of the Year?? Really? You're better than that.
Dave McMenamin (4:01 PM)
That's all the time I got. Now I'm going to kick it to Will Purdue like B.J. Armstrong back in '92.
Lamar (LA, CA)
Why are Pau and Lamar struggling?
Will Perdue (4:04 PM)
Well Pau is a finesse player, and the physicality of the finals has effected him. You cannot expect him to be what he is not, that is a physical player. He is not a banger. If the Celtics continue to put an elbow in his chest, he will not play as well. Odom has been singled out as confused. I thought he would play better in Game 3, but Game 3 turned out to be his worst one. He just has not been consistent from game to game. You figure at some point he is due for a big game.
john (Anaheim, CA
What do you see Phil Jackson doing in his strategy to help the lakers win tonite?
Will Perdue (4:07 PM)
It is not so much Phil Jackson, it comes down to Kobe. In Game 3, Phil put the ball in Kobe's hands and let him have the freedom to break the triagle and go on his own. But Kobe looked like he got tired on D because he was working so hard on the offesnive end, and that opened things up on offense for the Celtics. Phil needs to monitor Kobe's minutes and be sure he gets rest this game.
Brian (Vancouver, BC)
What is happening with Luke Walton? And I think the Lakers will force Gasol to pump some irons this summer. At least gain some stregth.
Will Perdue (4:08 PM)
Luke walton is a role player. he is a very good passer out of the post, a decent jump shooter, and an average defender. But he has not had the chance to excel in these games. I have not had a problem with what he has done in the series so far.
antwan(minnesota)
what do you think was the reason for paul pierce's ineffectiveness in game 3?
Will Perdue (4:10 PM)
Whether he will admit it or not, it seemed to me like his knee was bothering him. He did not attack the basket like he did in the first two games, which makes me think he did not trust his knee. If you noticed, they tried to put him in the block in Game 3 instead of letting him go 1-on-1 from the perimeter.
Adrian (Long Beach,CA)
Why hasn't ariza got more minutes? He is a much better defender than radman.
Will Perdue (4:12 PM)
Because he missed ost of the season with an injury and the triangle is a read offense, where practice time is crirtical, which he has not had. His timing has been off when he has played because of all the time he has missed. Yes he is a better defender, but he is a liability on offense, where the Lakers seem to be struggling the most.
Magic (inglewood)
If the Celts can't use Rondo, how will the lakers use that to their advantage?
Will Perdue (4:14 PM)
Well what they cannot do is have a let down, as they did when they thought Pierce was out with the knee. If Rondo cannot go they have to attack Sam Cassell on defense, with Fisher, Farmar, and especially when Cassell is on Kobe. With House, he is a shooter, and not a distributor, so they cannot leave him open.
John (Santa Barbara CA)
will the celtics change the way they gaurd Kobe down the stretch tonight?
Will Perdue (4:16 PM)
I think so. I talked to KG and he stepped up and took resposibility for Kobe going off in the second half. He felt he did not help enough in the help defense. He said he will not allow it to happen again in game 4. So I think KG will look to roam more when Kobe attacks the basket, so Pau and Lamar better be ready to knock down some jump shots, if that is the case.
Rob (Boston,MA)
I thought Pierce looked more tired than anything, although his knee probably was hurting. Do you see fatigue playing a critical role into tonight's game?
Will Perdue (4:19 PM)
I do. I thought not only Kobe was tired, but Doc Roivers admitted he took an extra time out because Pierce and KG were tired and niether team really got a chance to rest on the travel day. And if you look at the minutes, Kobe, Pierce and KG, were all 40+ every night. That adds up. So as I said before, Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers have to be aware of the fatigue factor when it comes to their players.
J (NYC)
After his performance in game 3, do you expect to see more of Sasha tonight, and if so, will it be next to Fisher or Farmar?
Will Perdue (4:20 PM)
Well I do not expect to see anything different from Game 3. Phil has a rotation he has stuck to. Now if Fisher or Famar get in foul trouble, then we will see him earlier. But Phil has a game plan he sticks to. But Sasha cannot force the action just because he played well in Game 3.
bugsy (vegas)
do you think the lakers will win by more than 8 tonight?
Will Perdue (4:21 PM)
Well Bugsy I am not sure what the spread is, but probably not. Tonight's margin of victory will depend on how many FT the Lakers decide to make.
Paolo (Oakton, VA)
Are the lakers running the triangle differently compared to what you guys ran in the 90s?
Will Perdue (4:24 PM)
No, it is still the same offense. The triangle is a read offense, so there are not alot of plays called within it. If the defense plays one way then you react to that. For every pass there is a counter pass, so if something overplayed there is a counter. What makes it hard as a read offense is not all the guys make the same read and that can cause it to get bogged down, so in that case you need a guy like a MJ or Kobe to break out of it, and take a shot, often not with much time left on the clock.
Ryan (Mpls)
So are you predicting a Lakers win tonight?
Will Perdue (4:26 PM)
Well I think they should win. I feel they were fortunate to win Game 3, because of Kobe's ability to hit 4th quarter shots although he was tired. But the Lakers could've stolen Game 1 and could not do it. In Game 2 the Celtics did a much better job. Then in Game 3 the Celtics could have taken that game even though they played poorly. So I personally feel that much like in Game 2 the home team will play much better and win the game, and in this case it will be the Lakers.
Sean (Atlanta, GA)
Fisher acts like he hasn't been here before! Do you expect him to start playing better anytime soon?
Will Perdue (4:27 PM)
I have been surprised by his lack of production. I was pleased with his aggressiveness in Games 1 and 2, but we have not seen the results. I do not know if he is putting too much pressure on himself, but even when he has had open jumpshots he has not knocked them down consistently.
Will Perdue (4:29 PM)
Game 3 was the ugliest game of these playoffs, but now that each team has had a chance to watch film, and rest, I expect Game 4 to be the best game of the Finals and maybe the playoffs. Boston has a great chance to go up 3-1 and the Lakers know that cannot afford that. I think both teams will play with a sense of urgency and we will get the quality of play we have expected since the Finals started.
Buzzmaster (4:30 PM)
Thanks Will! I think Rick Kamla from NBA TV is up next!
Jordan (Boise,ID)
If L.A. loses tonight, do you give them any chance in this series at all? Thanks.
Rick Kamla (4:33 PM)
If the Lakers lose tonight, it's beyond over. It might already be over, based on the amazing stat--err, fact--that the Celtics have never lost a playoff series of any kind when leading two-zip. They are 30-0. It does, in fact, look bleak for the Lakers, especially with Kobe feeling like he has to do it all himself.
Mike, Los Angeles
Do you think Sasha Vujacic will continue his hot shooting in game 4?
Rick Kamla (4:34 PM)
I like Sasha as a player and a cool dude, but he is not the most consistent player on the globe. I could see him in doubles, but nothing like Game 3. It's on Pau and LO to raise their games to get the Lakers even in this series.
jdawg (san diego, ca)
Hey Rick- why haven't the lakers gotten into an offensive flow yet? i'm confused as to why phil hasn't adjusted to dominate the boston 'wall' defense yet since the triangle is all about creating spacing!?!
Rick Kamla (4:37 PM)
The Lakers haven't gotten into an offensive flow for two reasons. One, the Celtics defense is the best in basketball. And two, Kobe has reverted back to the selfish Kobe that suffered first round flame outs in back to back years. In Game 3, he came out looking for his from the jump and the only time he passed was out of a double, trap, or when he terminated the dribble. Kobe playing 1-on-5 is good enough to win a game or two, but not this series.
TL (Hopedale, MA)
The Lakers are a totally soft, euro team. They might as well be playing soccer the way they cry about everything.
Rick Kamla (4:39 PM)
I agree that Pau is softish, but LO is not soft. Kobe is not soft. Sasha is not soft. Ronny is not soft. The Lakers aren't soft, they just aren't brutes. They are a typical West Coast style team. Offensive-minded and pleasing to the eyes, but not traditional playoff basketball.
Q ( Saint Paul MN)
do you think kobe will lock paul down and make paul have a game like he did in game 3
Rick Kamla (4:40 PM)
Good question from a great state. Q, Kobe will guard Paul and he will win some of the battles, but there is no way Paul lays an egg in back to back playoff games at Staples. Won't happen. The Truth returns tonight, but not sure if it'll be enough to win the game. I'm 50-50 on Game 4.
Eric (Los Angeles, CA)
Why do you think Kobe was able to get to the rim and into the paint in Game 3, but not Games 1 and 2?
Rick Kamla (4:42 PM)
Kobe was more aggressive in Game 3, the Lakers made some adjustments, and the Celtics played looser on the defensive end, probably due to travel as well as complacency of being up 2-0. Look for the Cees to get back to building that wall tonight.
FFF (FF)
WHo would be the MVP of the series?
Kobe (Los Angeles, CA)
Rick, are you a laker-hater?
Rick Kamla (4:45 PM)
Good question. I am highly critical of the Lakers for a variety of reasons, so everyone thinks I'm a hater. I don't hate. I'm a peaceful deadhead from the suburbs of Mpls. It's all good. But as you've read in my blogs, the Lakers arrogance, especially that of Kobe, really bums me out. Is the arrogance justified? Yes, but that doesn't mean I like it.
Bill Simmons (L.A. via Boston)
Karate Kid, 90210, the Lakers suck.
Rick Kamla (4:46 PM)
Is this REALLY Bill Simmons? If so, thanks for watching NBA TV as much as you do. I do agree that 90210 is pretty bunk.
Mike (Avondale, AZ)
What's more annoying to you, the lack of interest by Laker fans at home or the fact that all of the Laker fans assume the world is against them?
Rick Kamla (4:48 PM)
Mike, you just struck a nerve. I thought the crowd was awful in Game 1. There was no pre-game buzz. It was like the Grizzlies were in town. Pun intended. And from where I was standing, the crowd turned on Pau Gasol ruthlessly. Calling him names, questioning his manhood, and begging Phil to remove him from the game. I haven't been this down on a crowd since Game 6 in Dallas in 2006.
Yosi (Los Angeles)
Rick, if you think the Lakers, especially Kobe is arrogant, that's your problem and your illusion. You're supposed to be a professional, remember? Don't let your misconceptions get in the way of your work.
Rick Kamla (4:50 PM)
Yosi, you come to chats for opinions. I gave you my professional opinion. And that isn't a misconception...the opinion is actually well-conceived, if I do say so myself.
Lloyd (LA, CA)
Wow you know nothing about basketball. How did you get your job? Kobe shot 20 times in game 3 and made 12. Man, you must have a low IQ.
Rick Kamla (4:52 PM)
Lloyd, nice try. The most important stat from the Lakers perspective is assists. When they are playing "Lakers basketball", they are moving the ball and getting double-figure scoring from several players. Is that happening in this series? Huh? Kobe had one assist in Game 3. Nice job with that. Phil would be the first to admit that Kobe going for his, while effective in Game 3, is not vintage Lakers basketball.
Shaun (Nashua, NH)
I have not watched Sam Cassell his whole career but after watching him play in these playoffs has he always had this shoot first mentality? Despite coming in half-way through the year he has played with KG and Ray Allen before so I do not understand why he cannot get into the offense.
Rick Kamla (4:53 PM)
Sam has always been a score-first point guard. His entire career. His shot selection has been mysterious in this series, but I still love Sam-I-am.
Timmy: (Indianapolis)
What do you think of Russel Westbrook of UCLA?
Rick Kamla (4:54 PM)
I like his game, but draft-wise, I'm more concerned with my beloved Wolves taking Brook Lopez over OJ Mayo. Mayo is sooooooooo the obvious pick, I can't even believe the Wolves are considering anyone else. I know they have to, but in the end, Mayo is No. 3 in this draft.
Craig (PA)
Whats most annoying are the Boston fans inferiority complex. Notice they have Beat LA or Yankees suck, but not vice-versa cause yankee and Laker fans know who they are and dont have to rely on another teams identity. I know this wont get posted because BSPN is not allowed to put anti-new england posts.
Rick Kamla (4:56 PM)
Craig, when's the last time you were in Boston. I was just there. It is one of the most confident, if not cocky, cities I have ever visited. There is no inferiority complex in Boston. Maybe New Jersey (to New York), but not Boston to New York. Believe that.
Phil (LA)
Rey Rick, next year, with both teams having another year together, will we see the same two teams in the Finals again?
Rick Kamla (4:59 PM)
Phil, you're on a vibe I've had ever since these Finals were set. With Bynum back next year (fingers crossed), the Lakers are a virtual lock to win the West again. Boston was built to compete for championships for three years, and with Detroit falling back, Orlando not quite ready, and Cleveland still a heavyhitter away, I would have to say that next year at this time we'll be in the same two cities for The Finals.
Rick Kamla (5:00 PM)
Most of you have been great. I appreciate the vibes. Enjoy the Finals, and we'll see you around NBA.com. Peace>>>
Chad Ford (5:01 PM)
Aloha everyone ... let's keep the ball rolling with Finals talk and I'll take some questions too about the Draft, and other league news ... so send them in
Phil (LA)
Hey Chad, Rick is in agreement with me that we should see the same two teams next year in the finals...if so, who has homecourt?
Chad Ford (5:03 PM)
I think there's a good chance of that -- especially from the Lakers side. It will be interesting to see what Detroit does this summer ... I just posted an article based on what I'm hearing around the league on the Pistons plans ... if they can land Carmelo, they could make it interesting in the East. No one else, in my opinion, is close.
Alan (Boston, MA)
Any word on Rondo for tonight? If so, why would Doc actually use Tony Allen since he hasn't played since game 7 of the ATL series? He is rusty, and certainly not an offensive threat. EHouse, please!!!
Chad Ford (5:04 PM)
Sounds like it will be a game time decision, but from what I gather, he's going to give it a go. I think you've got to try Allen for defensive purposes. Sam Cassell will get shredded.
Brian (CA)
Hey chad, what is your take on the whole donaghy situation and the nba being rigged? Alot of it does make sense, why wouldnt the NBA want this series to go 7 games? The last offensive foul on KG at the end of game 3 was a complete bogus call to give the lakers the ball back and seal the deal.
Chad Ford (5:05 PM)
There you go David Stern ... Stern's own penchant for secrecy and control continue to give life to the conspiracy theorists out there ...
Larry(Wilmington, NC)
Shouldn't the pistons have landed Carmelo sometime around Summer 2003?
Chad Ford (5:07 PM)
Oh that hurts ... Sure ... but this may be better. I think Carmelo has made his mistakes somewhere else, now it's time to get down to business.
idiot.
the game was over at that poit brian. the C's had already blown it, so dont worry about that call. and why would the league rig it so san antonio won 4 titles? everyone hates them
Chad Ford (5:10 PM)
Here we go ... Here's the thing about the scandal. I think most of us are on the side that there isn't some sort of secret committee that privately determines the outcome of every game. But it does highlight that referees have an inordinate amount of control over things and lots of factors -- from personal agendas to bias do affect the game. Why the league hasn't done more to create, if nothing else, the appearance of independence and accountability is beyond me.
Don (Washington, DC)
Do you agree with Hollinger that Wade's 2006 finals perf was the best ever??? I think he needs to get fired for this!
Chad Ford (5:12 PM)
I tend to side with Hollinger Don. I think our eyes deceive us more than we want to think. Wade was amazing in that series ... I'm old school with MJ. Nothing will top his "flu" performance in Game 5 versus Utah. But that's as much emotion as it is objective.
Mike (LA)
What do you think the league could or should do to fix the officiating problems.
Chad Ford (5:13 PM)
I think the NBA referees should be independent from the league. I think it's the only way. And then when the league wants to send a "rule interpretation" or "emphasis" to refs before a game, it's public knowledge.
Herman (LA)
Funny Hollinger would cite that as the best performance now, when that series was the poster series for refs deciding games by putting Wade at the line endlessly.
Chad Ford (5:14 PM)
Yeah ... the stats don't factor in referee bias. That's true.
Rob (Boulder)
Have you heard anything about what the Nuggets would be getting back in return for Melo'?
Chad Ford (5:15 PM)
They have a bunch of options. But the Pistons one would get them Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince. Detroit would get Anthony and No. 20. They have other options with New Jersey (for Richard Jefferson and pieces) etc... but if they're going to move Carmelo ... I think it will be tough to beat what Detroit can give.
Sean ((Chicago))
Does the Del Negro hiring mean the Bulls will take Rose? And what the hell is wrong with Reinsdorf?
Chad Ford (5:17 PM)
I don't think Vinny Del Negro will get to pick No. 1 for the Bulls. Given what's gone down over the past month ... I'm not sure John Paxson gets to pick either. It sounds like Jerry Reinsdorf is taking over. Owners have the right to do that ... but it's almost always a disaster. In this case, Reinsdorf has blown it big time.
Jake (CO)
Do you really think Carmelo would fit in with MoTown's hard nose defensive attitude? I've been watching him play for years and although he is an amazing offensive player, I have NEVER seen him play defense.
Chad Ford (5:18 PM)
It's a culture thing. What coach in Denver has demanded it from him? Detroit has such a strong culture and Joe D is such an influence there ... I personally think it would be the best thing to ever happen to Carmelo. I think in Detroit he could turn around his life and his game.
David Stern (NYC)
Can we talk about the finals? I didn't fix the playoffs so we could listen to draft chatter...
Chad Ford (5:19 PM)
Sorry commissioner ...
The D (NYC)
I truly believe that if the Kings-LA series is proven to be fixed by the officals, this will be the end of the NBA. Your take?
Chad Ford (5:22 PM)
Yes ... which is why you're getting such a strong response from the NBA and even usually critical owners like Mark Cuban. I think privately, even people inside the league have concerns ... but they won't go public with them. There is too much at stake. For the NBA to be successful, there has to be a perception that the outcome of the game is dependent on one thing ... the players on the floor.
Harrison (Falls Church, VA)
Hi Chad. I'm a bit tired of hearing how the Garnett pick wasn't a moving pick. He was giving moving picks the whole game. I'm just surprised they waited until the fourth quarter to call it. Do you agree?
Chad Ford (5:24 PM)
It's an issue. It looks like a moving pick to me as well. But when refs don't call things consistently ... it's trouble. Players adjust to the refs. Their biggest complaint is when the refs don't call things consistently.
cesar (tempe)
if we had robots, they could call games and there would never be any problems. get on it!
Chad Ford (5:25 PM)
We need to get Sony on that ... Colbert keeps showing video of their robots. Let's roll David Stern ... but wait ... who's in charge of programming them?
Ron (Mission Viejo, CA)
I know Boston has a great D but it just seems the Lakers are playing bad. Is Boston's D really to account for the poor play of the Lakers or are the Lakers we are seeing in the finals capable of playing better (against Boston's D)?
Chad Ford (5:27 PM)
I think both are at play. Boston is the best defensive team in the league and you can see the effects. But the Lakers sure seem to be intimidated or something. I honestly thought they'd have this series wrapped up in 6 games.
AC (Phx, AZ)
I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of trades coming up to and during the draft. What do you think and who will make the most significant move?
Chad Ford (5:30 PM)
A lot of the trades we're talking about would have to wait until July 1st because of base year issues (Carmelo and Billups, for example, are base year players). But there are some teams like the Knicks, Blazers, Raptors and Pacers who seem to be out there talking to folks pretty aggressively.
Phil (LA)
Hey Chad, if you were a veteran becominig a free agent, which team would you rather sign with next year, LA or Boston?
Chad Ford (5:31 PM)
Boston ... LA is stacked
cesar (tempe)
how does somebody have a base year contract?
Shawn (Dallas, TX)
What can Dallas do to get back to the Finals?
Chad Ford (5:32 PM)
If you sign a free agent contract where your salary is roughly 125 percent greater than your last year's salary ... your a base year player. It means that if a team tries to trade you the first year after your new contract kicks in ... they can only take back 50 percent of your salary. That makes trades really difficult to do.
William (Los Angeles)
David Thorpe thinks the Lakers should consider trading Bynum for a big-time 3 man like Deng, Caron, or Jefferson. I think he's nuts, but is there a way for the Lakers to swing Odom and other pieces for a good 3?
Zen Master (Los Angeles, CA)
I see the coaching difference between me and Doc becoming more and more relevant with each game. And I think that we will be seeing a legendary Game 7 to decide the title. And I like my chances with me at the helm, and the best player on the planet.
Chad Ford (5:33 PM)
Only if you believe that Gasol and Bynum can't play together. I think they can. No way I'm trading Bynum. Odom, on the other hand, will likely get moved this summer for a more traditional 3.
Nick (Toronto)
Chad, we've had enough talk about the NBA Finals -- they have chats for eight hours. Let's talk draft!Any idea whom the Raptors might take? You still think Greene?
Chad Ford (5:34 PM)
Donte Greene, Robin Lopez ... maybe Ty Lawson if they trade T.J. Ford
Rob (Irvine, CA)
If the Heat trade down for the 5th pick and still get OJ Mayo wouldn't that make them an instant contender in the east with a starting line up of Mayo or Lowry, Wade, Miller, Marion , Haslem (assuming they want to play small ball)
Chad Ford (5:35 PM)
Yes ... I really like that team. If I were pat Riley, I'd do it in a heart beat if I knew Mayo would be there at No. 5. Even if I knew Mayo wouldn't be there, I'd consider it. There'd be a good player there at No. 5
Lou (Deptford, NJ)
C'mon Chad what's up with the Sixers? We have all this cap room ... they have to be planning something ...
Chad Ford (5:36 PM)
I keep hearing that the guy they're targeting is Jose Calderon. That's a bit of a surprise ... but if they land Calderon, then they can turn around and move Andre Miller.
Scott (Santa Barbara, CA)
Any news on what Elton Brand is thinking right now?
Chad Ford (5:36 PM)
I hear he won't opt out. There isn't any real opportunity to make the money he wants to make anywhere else.
cesar (tempe)
give me something on the suns!!! anything!
Chad Ford (5:37 PM)
$3 million for the 15th pick in the draft. It will pay Terry Porter's salary for the next two years.
Ron (Chicago)
Chad any idea on who the Bulls are targeting, after they draft Derrick Rose?
Chad Ford (5:39 PM)
IF they take Rose. I think they will ... but I continue to hear rumblings that it will be Beasley as well. So ... you never know. Either way they'll move someone. If they draft Rose, they'll use Hirnich and Ben Gordon to make a deal.
Terry: (Indy)
Do you think two years is enought time for Larry to bring the Pacers back to life?
Chad Ford (5:40 PM)
He probably needs 3 years. It depends on what he can get in a deal for Jermaine O'Neal. O'Neal is intriguing, but he isnt' easy to trade. Teams still wonder whether he's got anything left in the tank.
jon (nyc)
hey chad, are you hearing anything about a market for zach randolph this summer?
Chad Ford (5:42 PM)
crickets
James (Miami)
From recent reports, Beasley seems to be a bit of a tweener. Is he really closer to 6'8?
Chad Ford (5:43 PM)
He's 6-8 ...that's enough. Teams look at standing reach and wingspan more than height. He's fine.
Marco (Italy)
What do you think about Danili Gallinari? New York?
Chad Ford (5:43 PM)
No ... more likely Milwaukee
Kidman (Greeley, CO)
Does Detroit have any interest in AI? That is who I would like to see Denver trade. Also, is there any chance Amir Johnson could come to Denver in a deal or is he off limits?
Chad Ford (5:44 PM)
Forget about it .. Iverson is close to untradable.
Kyle (Portland, OR)
Chad,Any word on who the Blazers are targeting in the trade market? Thanks!
Chad Ford (5:44 PM)
Veteran point guard or small forward. I keep hearing Richard Jefferson's name the most.
Ron Keron (Ceuta)
What will happen with calderon, is there a price that cannot be matched by toronto?
Chad Ford (5:45 PM)
They say they'll match any offer ... but if Philly offered $10 million a year ... that would be tough to swallow.
SAM (Los Angeles)
Hey Chad, how long do you think it will take before there is parity between the West and the East?
Chad Ford (5:46 PM)
Seems like forever. Next year will be just as bad.
Johs (mpls, MN)
Is there any way the Wolves dont walk away with Beasley or Mayo in the draft? Please tell me McHale wont screw this up.
Chad Ford (5:47 PM)
I hear McHale loves Brook Lopez ... gotta love the Wolves ... their last great move was in 1995 when they draft Kevin Garnett but he still keeps plugging along.
Doc Rivers
I just have to get this off my chest...Pauls knee is pretty bad, Rondo is 20%, Perkins is getting worn down and KG is the soft one. I see us losing in 6.
Chad Ford (5:48 PM)
Somewhere Bill Simmons is losing it ...
Singh (Stoughton, WI)
who you got winning tonights game? Lakers or Celtics? If lakers win, can they win the series?
Chad Ford (5:49 PM)
Lakers tonight. I still think the Lakers will take it, but admittedly, they have an uphill climb.
Chad Ford (5:49 PM)
Gotta run everyone ... enjoy the game.
Z (San Diego)
Jemele, would Denver really give up a 24 year old potential superstar and a first round pick for a point guard and small forward who thrived on their particular system and team camaraderie? I think Melo's overrated on the whole as he is now, but Denver would be nuts to make this trade. (And Joe D genius)
Jemele Hill (5:58 PM)
Whaaa? Ex-squeeze me? Bacon powder? Melo is overrated? How is a guy overrated when he, for his career, is averaging 22.5 ppg and 9.5 rebounds AND was the best player on our Olympic team. Anyway, Denver WOULD BE nuts to make that trade, but I am praying they do it. Stuckey is ready to take over. You're looking at a lineup with Stuckey, Rip, Melo, Sheed and Dyss. One thing the Pistons lacked was someone to go to in the fourth quarter. Chauncey did his best to fill that role, but sometimes, it was mixed results. Chauncey hasn't been the same since the NBA Finals in '04.
Jake, Boston
Do you think Rondo will be more than "50 Percent" tonight? And who do you have winning?
Jemele Hill (5:59 PM)
Rondo will be more than 50 percent, but I do expect him to play decreased minutes. More Eddie House! Just what we all need...Tonight is such a toss up. If the C's are going to win a game in LA, it's likely to happen tonight. As a colleague pointed out, C's are unlikely to deliver on Sunday because you're relying on Pierce after essentially a weekend off in his hometown. Lots of distractions could go down Fri and Sat.
Ahmad (Windy City)
Who will be better in 10 years? Derrick Rose or Chris Paul?
Jemele Hill (6:01 PM)
CP3, fa' sho. Saying D Rose will be better means saying he'll compete for a MVP, lead his team to nearly winning a conference, etc. What CP3 accomplished in one year, some guys don't do in their entire careers.
Teddy (Baltimore, MD)
Jemele, what the heck is wrong with Odom?
Jemele Hill (6:02 PM)
He's PS -- Perenially Soft. He's never been a physical player and he's got a really tough matchup. Odom always will be more potential than actual result. I also don't like how he drifts into being a dumb basketball player. The number of offensive charges he has is ridiculous.
Alberto V (Eastie, MA)
I think you are very nice person. Go Celtics!
Jemele Hill (6:02 PM)
You might have thought that this morning when I had to appear on First Take and there was no makeup girl!
Brian (Austin, TX)
Jemele, don't you think it is time for David Stern to step down. Between the wardrobe issue, allowing one of his best friends to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City of all places, and refusing to admit that there is anything wrong with the officiating, the NBA is quickly becoming a laughingstock. At this point, what is the difference between pro wrestling and the NBA? I can't see one.
Jemele Hill (6:04 PM)
David Stern is a smart guy. I like him. I don't like his arrogance. He needs to do more than just fire felon comments at Donaghy. He has to fix this. He needs to make his officials open to public scrutiny.
Matt (Portland, OR)
Odom goes as Pau goes, Odom feeds off Gasol...this series will come down to Pau. How do you think Pau can get it going?
Jemele Hill (6:06 PM)
I don't know if Pau can. Perkins is so physical with Gasol. Gasol wilts every single time. You start bumping him and punching him in the chest a little bit, and it's a wrap. Gausol isn't a physical player. What we've seen from Gausol isn't an aberration, but a trend. This is when they really needed Bynum.
Mike C (Los Angeles)
The TV ratings that are coming out seem less spectacular than expected. With the amount of hype surrounding the series, I was definitely expecting much higher. Is it the case that NBA just isn't very popular anymore or are there just too many people watching the game on DVRs (so it doesn't register on TV ratings)?
Jemele Hill (6:07 PM)
Compare these ratings to last year's. It's a complete victory for the NBA. Look, gone are the days where you have 1 out of 3 people watching the NBA Finals. I don't care whose playing in it. People have too many other options. It's difficult for just about any sport to get American Idol numbers. Those days are long gone.
MW (NY)
What do you think of the john Hollinger column about D-wade having the best finals performance ever in 2006?
Jemele Hill (6:08 PM)
Tim Donaghy would agree.
Jemele Hill (6:08 PM)
For me, it's still that year MJ had the flu and just murdered Utah.
Teddy (Baltimore, MD)
do you really think bynum is the answer? isn't there a good chance he'll come back next year and have regressed a ton?
Jemele Hill (6:10 PM)
I don't worry about his aggressiveness or game regressing. I'm concerned about the knee. It's a red flag that it's taking his knee this long to get healthy. I'm also skeptical of putting that much pressure on a newbie that hasn't played consistently for 82 games and never in the playoffs. We'll see.
Mitch (LA)
I'm thinking of calling my old pal Riles and offering Odom and Vlad or Luke for Marion. What do you think? Odom played better with Riles and Marion doesn't seem to fit.
Jemele Hill (6:10 PM)
That's when you INK the Lakers for another title. Marion in a Laker uniform is proof God does have a favorite.
Steiny (NYC)
If the Finals ended today, who would be the MVP?
Jemele Hill (6:11 PM)
Man, that's a tough question. It's even tougher to answer because the Lakers are down 2-1. If the Lakers were up, it would be Kobe. Either way this series goes, it will probably be Pierce or Kobe.
Josh (mpls, MN)
The Lakers amazing offense has scored 20 or fewer points 5 out of 12 quarters in this series. That has to be the most alarming trend if you ask me. Well that and the Laker Bench not showing up outside of Sasha in game 3.
Jemele Hill (6:12 PM)
That's not just a trend, it's a reality. We easily forget Boston was the NBA's best defensive team. In all honesty, the Lakers should be struggling against them.
Ben (SF)
Can you help settle a debate? My friend says Kobe is one of the all-time bests at elevating his teammates a la Jordan, Bird, Magic, Russell, etc. I say that is blasphemy. Who is right?
Jemele Hill (6:13 PM)
"Elevating his teammates?" ,,, More like plotting their murders.
Nate, Hermosa Beach, CA
Jemele, so much for your prediction about the Celtics losing to your Detroit Pistons. It will be good to see the Celtics win the next two and out muscle the soft defending Lakers. What do you have to say for yourself?
Jemele Hill (6:14 PM)
%^andand^%$@!
Jamill (Illinois)
Do you like the chances of a Jermaine O'Neal comeback next season?
Jemele Hill (6:14 PM)
Not at all. He's a shell of himself and I'm not convinced he's totally healthy. Those were significant knee problems he's coping with, and he's got a lot of miles on him.
Patrick(LA)
I like the way you handle Skip on first and 10. What kind of stats do you think Lamar and Gasol have to in order for the Lakers to win?
Jemele Hill (6:16 PM)
if Gasol scores 20 the Lakers win. They need less from Lamar. All he has to do is play D, rebound and play smart basketball. Gasol needs to be offensively involved. One of them needs to be Sasha tonight.
Jeff (Phoenix, AZ)
Why does everyone forget that Jordan brutalized his teammates, physically and emotionally?
Jemele Hill (6:18 PM)
Obviously, Curt Schilling didn't know that, either. I'm not one of those who is constantly on Kobe for not being a good teammate. What does that even mean? For those who put Kobe in that category, you need to go read Sam Smith's Jordan Rules, which details how Jordan frequently berated his teammates, had a huge ego and was, to some degree, obsessed with stats. The difference was that other athletes didn't blog about it. We didn't have cameras everywhere or picture phones, because I'm sure Jordan's personal life would have been as debatable as Kobe's. MJ never has had to live with the same scrutiny and backlash Kobe did. He was protected by reporters, who, like the rest of us, were awed by his talents.
William (Los Angeles)
To Jeff in AZ, listen to Bill Simmons podcast with Adande from yesterday. They said something very important: guys feared Jordan, but wanted to play for him nonetheless. Kobe does not necessarily garner the same respect.
Jemele Hill (6:20 PM)
But think about this: Guys in Jordan's days didn't make the kind of scrilla (money) that dudes make now. Lamar Odom has not had a distinguished career, but he's making $14 million. When you have guys on the bench who are making 6, 7, and 8 million...no they aren't going to fear anyone. Jordan was always the big dog, but today's NBA economics have lower-level players thinking they are better than they are and they are less likely to listen.
joffy (los angeles)
J, I read Schillings article on Kobe, any truth to it?
Jemele Hill (6:21 PM)
Of course, there is truth to it. Kobe was cussing his teammates out in every huddle. So what? That's what happens when you want to win, you get frustrated and your team isn't giving you anything. If the Lakers lose this series, if I were Kobe, I'd run Lamar over in my Astin Martin.
Nick Alvarez (El Paso)
As people are waiting for KG and Paul Pierce to play better in game 4, don't you think that it is highly unlikey that Ray Allen can duplicate his performance on the road?
Jemele Hill (6:22 PM)
Actually, no. I think Ray has found his groove. Will he score another 25? Who knows. But Pierce is really the key. He needs a big game.
Jake (NY)
Will the NBA finals be better if it were a single elimination, in a predetermined city like the NFL?
Jemele Hill (6:23 PM)
Not really. What would make it better is if they just did a 1-to-16 format, doing away with the conferences.
T.King (New York)
Is Rondo secretly the gear that makes "The Big 3" work?
Jemele Hill (6:23 PM)
According to Kendrick Perkins, he's the MVP of the team. Yeah, I laughed too.No, but in all seriousness, Rondo's value is underrated.
Joseph (Idaho)
Isn't Gasol the perfect counterpart for Kobe? He loves to play #2. Bynum will be there next year to be an enforcer.
Jemele Hill (6:24 PM)
He'd be the perfect player if he were tougher. But he's a pretty good sidekick. Just not perfect. What I like about Gasol is he stays underneath the basket.
Jeff (Los Angeles, CA)
Derek Fisher struggles have been downplayed...actually not even talked about...don't the lakers need Fish to help open the game for Odom and gasol
Jemele Hill (6:25 PM)
Good point. Rondo's speed is really killing him, which is somewhat surprising. I mean, Fish did pretty well against AI, Deron Williams and Tony Parker...I can't figure out why he's not doing better against Rondo.
Sean (Los Angeles CA)
I've posted about 1000 comments on this stupid thing and none of you guys will post them
Jemele Hill (6:26 PM)
There you go! Shoulda had a question..
Daniel (LABallTalk.com)
I've been reading articles about this game four all day. No one seems to be mentioning one thing. The Lakers are on a 15 home game winning streak and currently 9-0 at home while the Celtics are 2-7 on the road. Why would we give the Celtics any chance to win at Staples Center? Also, has a team ever won every single home game throughout the playoffs and not won the title? The Lakers could potentially go 11-0 at Staples Center and still not win the title... that would be CRAZY!!!
Jemele Hill (6:27 PM)
That would be crazy. People are just playing the odds. The Lakers have to win three of the next four to win the title and the C's, two of three. You sort of look at what's likely to happen. Boston rarely, if ever, lost three straight games during the regular season (my guess is they probably didn't)...so why would that happen now?
jdawg (san diego, ca)
why aren't the lakers getting the kobe double-team-dish to pau/odom dunks they were doing all playoffs long? i thought phil was the master at this adjustment stuff?
Jemele Hill (6:28 PM)
Maybe because Boston is a really good defensive team. Perkins hasn't gone nuts on LA like he did against Detroit, but that guy is just owning the paint. That has been huge.
Sean (Los Angeles CA)
I knew I could count on you Jemele
Jemele Hill (6:28 PM)
I'm a woman of the people!
Big C (Richmond, VA)
Is it me or does Odom have the biggest mismatch in this entire series??? I mean he can take anyone who's guarding him off the dribble, he needs to wake up!
Jemele Hill (6:29 PM)
KG might disagree with you. And yes, he does have the worst matchup in this series.
David!(Columbia, Mo)
I know Odom and Gasol need to step up, but considering they both played awful last game and our defense was great and we still won, don't u feel that just one of them needs 15 to 20 points to give us a great chance especially since were at home?
Jemele Hill (6:30 PM)
I do. If one of them is in that 15-20 range, assuming Kobe doesn't have a stroke mid-game, the Lakers will win.
Jemele Hill (6:30 PM)
Well guys, my work is done here. Headed over to Staples. Enjoy the game.
Buzzmaster (7:03 PM)
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to see game three. While we wait for Chris, I'm here to chat it up.
Tab, Toronto
Hi Guys, Why does the NBA have to prove Donaghys alegations are untrue? Consider the source. How ridiculous is it to assume Stein would have anything to do with game fixing.
JMan (Canyon Country, CA)
Lakers are going to Win the championship this year. You know why? Because we have Kobe and they don't.
Buzzmaster (7:06 PM)
Kobe is only one man and he can only do but so much!
Eric, Houston
MJ vs Kobe, look at Hollingers top 50 finals performers. Kobe isn't even in the top 50, MJ is on there 6 times.
Jose A. Negron:Philadelphia, PA
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT EVERYBODY NOW LAKERS ARE GOING TO WIN THE FINALS CELTICS ARE JUST IN THE WAY OF THAT, KOBE STAY DOING YOUR THING AND DON'T STOP.
Nabeel (Harrisburg)
Who will step up more: KG or Pau and Pierce or Odom?
Buzzmaster (7:11 PM)
I think KG and Pierce will step up more. To me they want it a little bit more.
Cat (curiosity, NY)
Why does everyone hate the Lakers?
scott (fresno)
Hey Buzz. Did you enjoy the company of all the Boston fans predicting sweep at the Stupid Hotel last night?
Buzzmaster (7:15 PM)
I enjoyed it. You have to have faith in your team.
C.R. (Los Angeles)
I LOVE THE LAKERS
Gregg (CT)
Will the Celts win a game in LA?
Buzzmaster (7:17 PM)
They will take at least one game.
Dave (San Pedro, CA)
Anyone willing to guess how much the "Machine" will score tonight?
Jason (Tampa, FL)
What is up with Lamar Odom? Why has Gasol been such a non-factor?
scott (fresno)
MJ vs Kobe, did MJ's teammates ever abandon him like Fish, Pau and Lamar have?
Big Sexy (Miami, FL)
Celtics will finish is off @ home in game 6 ... ::calling my bookie::
Jeremy (NC)
Buzz, Do you think if the lakers had home court advantage instead of the celtics, would this series be a different story?
Buzzmaster (7:24 PM)
I think it would. I think Lakers would have a lead and a better chance of winning if they had home court.
Scott (Oakland)
Buzzmaster, How did you let the "F__ the Celtics" tag name make the chat after your 7:06 comment?
Buzzmaster (7:25 PM)
I'm sorry, I thought I took that down. GO CELTICS!
John (Houston)
Hey Buzzmaster, who plays a bigger role in the Celtics offense KG, Paul Pierce, or Ray Allen
Buzzmaster (7:26 PM)
Pierce and Allen have to start out strong. Once they start knocking down shots, the middle will open up for KG.
Jeremy (NC)
Well if the lakers do win tonight and Sunday wat are their chances of winning one of the last two games in boston, seeing how they showed spurts of life in both game 1 and 2
Buzzmaster (7:28 PM)
Their chances are very good. If they win three in a row, they will have all the momentum going into Boston.
Vince (Los Angeles)
Hey Buzzmaster, who are you really?
Buzzmaster (7:29 PM)
The Goddess of all things sports.
COME ON WHY IS IT NOT UP??
CAN I WATCH THE GAME ON THE INTERNET??
Rob Peterson (7:32 PM)
Hola, everyone ... Will be with you in a second. And you can watch the game on ABC, but not online.
Bobby (san pedro LA)
Hey Rob, When ESPN asks you to host a chat, is it kinda like our boss asking us to go file something? UGH!!
Rob Peterson (7:35 PM)
Bobby --No way. I love chatting with fans. It's great ... I love the, um, enthusiasm most people bring to this.Though, I wish this were a video chat. I'm handsome.
Eddie M. (Pensacola, FL)
Rob or Buzz...what's up with Pierce's horrible shooting in game 3? Was it "jitters" because he's playing in his hometown on the grandest of stages?
Rob Peterson (7:36 PM)
Eddie ...I think it was a combination of things: the travel, good defense, being home. Tons of factors.I think tonight will be different for everyone. With time to relax and get their bearings, I think both teams will be sharper tonight.
George (Los Angeles)
Hey Rob, please tell me your not a Laker-hater!!!! Who wins tonight? Why?
Rob Peterson (7:38 PM)
George --I'm not a Laker hater. I will admit I'm a Bucks fan underneath it all, but I have a great respect for these franchises. They have 30 NBA titles between them. I don't hate either team. Now that I can't be home for Father's Day, I'm hoping this goes seven... And before the series I said Cs in seven. But no, I'm no Lakers hater.
Michael Inglewood Ca
If Paul and KG have good games tonight do you think Boston will win?
Rob Peterson (7:40 PM)
Michael ...Yes. I think KG and Pierce's poor shooting in Game 3 definitely hindered the Celtics, and yet Boston only lost by six.So, if KG and Pierce have great nights, I think it's Boston's game, for sure.
Jorgen (San Diego)
How many points will Kobe score tonight?. I say an epic 50 points.
Rob Peterson (7:41 PM)
Jorgen --That would be epic. Let me dig through my Finals guide and find out how many 50-point games there have been in The Finals.
Rob Peterson (7:43 PM)
There have been, by my rough count, five 50-point games in The Finals.Again, I just scanned the book. But 50 on the ultimate stage is rare.Laker Elgin Baylor holds the record with 61 against the Celtics on April 14, 1962.
Rob Peterson (7:44 PM)
Funny that they used to have The Finals in April.
tony lomita ca
buzz or rob...whats you guys think of sasha gaurding pierce is that a good matchup?
Rob Peterson (7:45 PM)
Tony ... I do. Sasha's one of those annoying defenders that gets under opponent's skins. My brother plays defense like that, chest-to-chest, and let me tell you, I hate it.But, if Sasha does play Pierce on D, how much energy will he expend and will it affect The Machine's production on offense? Those will be things to watch for.
Fraser (toronto)
Who in your opinion is the finals MVP so far?
Rob Peterson (7:47 PM)
Hmmm... Good question. After the first two games, I would have said Pierce, but right now I'd go with Jesus, er, Ray Allen. He's been the most consistent...Still, we have a long way.
DAVID LOS ANGELES
Rob, is it me or do odom and gasol look like stick figures on the court, im not surpised by odoms no shows, hes always been a player you cant trust, but whats wrong with gasol why is he afraid, its not like hes going up against karl malone and tim duncan.
Rob Peterson (7:49 PM)
David --I think neither of them have faced a long, intense defender like KG.As much as a physical presence as KG is, he's also a mindset. You may not see him, but you're thinking about him. Both Pau and Lamar need to be more aggressive on offense, but I'm not sure it's in either man's nature to be alpha dogs.
Jim (Boise)
I assume if the Lakers win tonight with Kobe having another big game, he's your new choice for MVP?
Rob Peterson (7:49 PM)
Jim ...Maybe. Who knows? We'll need to wait and see.
Shawn - Murrieta, CA
Do you think the Celtics will bounce back from their poor shooting performance and win tonight or will the Lakers make some free throws and tie the series?
Rob Peterson (7:50 PM)
Shawn --I gotta agree with you, that was some pathetic free throw shooting from both teams in Game 3.They went a combined 32-for-52 from the line. It's as if the teams hired Shaquille O'Neal and Ben Wallace a free throw coaches...
Rob Peterson (7:51 PM)
Hey everyone, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, we'll have former Laker Mychal Thompson answering your questions, so please send in legit queries.Thanks.
McJim (CT)
McJim here, who's better KG or Kobe?
Rob Peterson (7:52 PM)
McJim --Kobe. More versatile, more explosive.Signed,O'Robby.
Tony K. : D.C.
Will you party like Mike Wilbon after the game?
Rob Peterson (7:53 PM)
Funny. And I do know J.A., but I have work to do (not that they don't...) for NBA.com that keeps me up to the wee hours of the morning. But I'll let them know you're thinking of them.
Rob Peterson (7:56 PM)
Everyone, Mychal Thompson will be along in moments, so send in your questions.Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell will be here at 8:15 ET and hopefully we'll get Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea tonight as well.
Drew (Boston)
How do you think this Celtics D would have done against one of the 3-peat Lakers or Bulls?
Rob Peterson (7:59 PM)
Drew ...Great question. And I need to answer this on the fly?I was looking at the Lakers three-peat roster and save Shaq and Kobe... But Shaq was one of the most dominant players I have ever seen. I don't know if these Cs would have had an answer for him.As for the Bulls, I think Michael, Scottie, Dennis and Toni would have been too much for the Cs to handle. But I would love to see it.Can someone make it happen?
SAsha ( LA CA)
Why do i have to come off the bench???? phil should start me over radman...am i right guys??
Rob Peterson (8:00 PM)
Nope, they need your energy off the bench. It's not who starts, it's who finishes.
Rob Peterson (8:00 PM)
Hey, everyone Mychal Thompson is here... He'll answer your trenchant questions right now...
Richard (Los Angeles)
Hey Mychal, I still have hope in the Lakers. Do you still believe the Lakers have a chance of winning it all this year?
Mychal Thompson (8:01 PM)
Of course, but they have to play aggressively like the did in Game 3.And, Sasha has to keep shooting the ball like he did in Game 3. He is the key.
Michael (Kona, Hawaii)
Mychal-What are you thought on the Game tonight? Will we see a turn around in the Lakers offense.. fueled by Kobe, Pau, and Odom?
Mychal Thompson (8:02 PM)
I expect Pau, Odom, Pierce and Garnett to improve their performances tonight, resulting in a down-to-the wire game.
Lamar ( LA CA )
hey mike real question for you where has lamar been through out this finals??will he be able to stay on the court tonight??
Mychal Thompson (8:03 PM)
Lamar has been on what the Australians call a "walkabout"... he's been out on a space station somewhere. He needs to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and he needs to stay out of foul trouble. If he does that, he'll threaten a triple-double.
Jeremy (NC)
Who is the better defender the hard-nosed Dennis Rodman, or KG? I would pick The Worm, bc from all of the games i have seen through the years he is the only guy to hold Shaq to only 2 points in a period of time when he was in his most dominant form.
Mychal Thompson (8:04 PM)
That's a good question ...I will go with KG because he's a 100-times better shot blocker, more of a threat, more of an intimidator around the basket.A guy at 7-0 to be that quick, to be that agile is a freak of nature.
Rahul (Fairfax, VA)
Mike, do you expect to see a similar "take charge" kobe as we've seen in the last games (like he has around 82 attempted field goals and only 6 assists?!)
Mychal Thompson (8:05 PM)
This is what Kobe lives for. Best player since Michael Jordan, this is his time and he's not gonna let it slip away.
Kavi (Fresno, CA)
Quick question Mike- Is tonights game 4 a must win for the Lakers and do you expect the big 3 to be as dormant this game?
Mychal Thompson (8:06 PM)
Tonight's game is more than a must win, Boston's thinking is we need to get on victory in LA and we take control of this series.Game 4 is just as important as Game 3 and Game 5 will be just as important as Game 4.
Mychal Thompson (8:07 PM)
Thanks to all of our Lakers fans for supporting the Lakers ... and we'll see you in Game 6, in Boston.
Rob Peterson (8:08 PM)
Mychal Thompson, everyone ... Thanks, Michael...We'll have Cornbread Maxwell in 10 minutes, so send in your questions for Mr. Maxwell.
Jr (East Los Angeles)
Do you know if Rondo is starting today and if he is how affective will he be? Thanks.
Rob Peterson (8:09 PM)
Everyone, Rondo is starting tonight.I've just been informed by our Celtics' guys on the beat tonight: John Schuhmann and Patrick Mulrenin.I'm paraphrasing, but Doc said Rondo's injury is a non-factor.So, Rondo is in the starting lineup.
Jen (Altadena, CA)
What is the most critical correction each team needs to make to ensure a win tonight?
Rob Peterson (8:11 PM)
Jen --For the Lakers, they need to get Lamar and Pau on track on offense. They need to be far more aggressive than they have been in the first three games. As for the Celtics, KG has to counter that aggressiveness on both ends of the floor. He needs to stop fading away and take it to the rack. The Celtics are playing their record-tying 24th playoff game this postseason and KG has had double-digit FTA only twice. That's not enough.
Matt (Melb, Australia)
Who says "walkabout"? I certainly don't and I'm as Aussie as the come mate! Now, how does LA get the crowd into more? I was listening to you on KLAC last game and the crowd seemed quiet until 5 minutes to go. What's up with that? It's the FINALS!
Rob Peterson (8:12 PM)
Interesting ... I'll bring that up with Mychal next time I see him.It was quiet in Game 3 because frankly, the game was dull. There, I said it. With 20 missed freebies and a combined 38 shooting percentage ... people were wondering ... what the heck?
Rob Peterson (8:13 PM)
Hey, everyone Cedric Maxwell is here to answer your questions... We'll get a question up in a moment.
Bradley (Oceanside, NY)
Hey Mr. Maxwell,I was curious as to your opinion on how this series plays out. If the Lakers pull Game 4 out and its 2-2 is it anybody's series? Or do you feel if the Lakers win tonight that the Celtics won't lose 3 in a row and then they go home up 3-2?
Cedric Maxwell (8:16 PM)
It's going to be a tough series, I think this is the biggest game because it's where the Lakers stand. They don't want to go down 3-1, the momentum will be in their favor if they can tie the series up.Unfortunately for the Celtics, Game 5 ... with the new format, would be here in LA.But I think it's more of a must win for the Lakers than the Celtics... the Celtics have the homecourt advantage, so it's more for the Lakers tonight.
Jeremy (NC)
Hey Cornbread, Being prolly the biggest Kobe and Lakers' fan ever... I can even notice how pau is struggling keeping up with KG especially on the block... wouldnt it make sense for the Celtics to spread the floor on the strong side and let KG isolate against Pau on the weakside block and go at him.... do you think the lakers would be better off to let Odom guard KG, since Odom is more of a defensive threat and Pau would not have to worry about having to keep up with Perkins
Cedric Maxwell (8:17 PM)
Kevin Garnett has a lot more foot speed, it's a difficult matchup for any big. They're gonna need more help baseline, but KG has an advantage in footspeed, so Pau's gonna need more help on the box.
Paul (Kansas)
Hi Cedric, you were my favorite player when you were in the NBA. What is your opinion on the Finals series format?
Cedric Maxwell (8:18 PM)
I don't really care about the format. As a media member I like it becaues I don't need to make two five-hour trips...But as a player, I would love to have a critical Game 5 in my building.
John (Sacramento, CA)
It really looks like the Celtics struggle offensively when Rondo isn't on the floor (he's their only true PG). Now that he won't be healthy to really bring that speed he adds, how will this affect the Celtics, who have been relying heavily on that?
Cedric Maxwell (8:20 PM)
I think it could change the series, potentially...I talked to Rondo today, he said he has some mobility. He's the key because he controls the point of attack both offensively and defensively. He's the table setter, Pierce and Allen get easier opportunities because of Rondo. You can have the best car in the world, but if you don't have the keys to that car, it won't move.
Jack Beaumont, TX
Cornbread, how does the look and feel of this series match-up with the '84 series you played in?
Cedric Maxwell (8:22 PM)
It's completely different, because there was a hatred for the Lakers. If one of the lakers had been on fire and I had glass of water, I would have drank the water. And Kobe and Pierce are friendly, they have each other's number.I didn't have Worthy's number, Magic's number, Kareem's number... I didn't want it.But in the end they're playing for the ultimate prize.
John Starks (Tulsa)
Cornbread, what is Boston doing that makes it so hard for L.A. to score?
Cedric Maxwell (8:23 PM)
Their defense is trapping alot and they're making the Lakers become a one-dimensional team. They're becoming a shooting team, not a penetrating team. And the running opportunities aren't there because the Lakers aren't getting the rebounds to get out on the break.
Cedric Maxwell (8:23 PM)
Thank you fan. Enjoy the NBA excitement, because I sure am.
Rob Peterson (8:24 PM)
Cerdric Maxwell, everyone ... Good to see Cornbread in the house.
Mike (Fontana, CA)
What are your opinions on this series if the Lakers win tonight?
Rob Peterson (8:27 PM)
I'm sure this was for Cornbread, but he had to jet. Here's what I think ... Two things...One, it would be hard for me to go against Kobe in a best of three situation. Two, the Celtics have the homecourt advantage and the Lakers, with the exception of the last eight minutes of Game 2, looked awful. So, where does that leave us? I still say Celtics in 7 if the Lakers win tonight.Of course, that's just a guess.
Mark (Corona, CA)
Hey Rob, what do the Celtics need to do if Rondo is struggling?
Rob Peterson (8:29 PM)
Mark ...I think they need to get the ball into the Big Three's hands as early as possible. If that means having Ray bring the ball up, then do it.Still, House or Cassell can fill that role, but my problem with them is that they're not facilitators. They like to shoot. They need to get the ball to the guys who can score consistently and wait for the kick out or ball reversal.
Rob Peterson (8:31 PM)
If you want to, head over to NBA.com to see Commissioner Stern's press conference. It's going on right now.http://www.nba.com/finals2008/index.html
Randy Braden (Corona, CA)
If the bench of the Lakers is again weak, who do you think will have to step it up?
Rob Peterson (8:32 PM)
Randy --I think Sasha is the key again, as Mychal Thompson said. He helps extend the defense. If you've noticed the Celtics protect the paint quite well.If the Lakers can get a couple outside jumpers to fall, they'll be in better shape.
jdawg (san diego, ca)
what is keeping the lakers from getting good offensive flow? i thought phil would be better at adjusting to the celtics 'wall' defense.
Rob Peterson (8:34 PM)
Jdawg, the Celtics defense is great at defending the paint, closing out on shooters and switching and doubling on screens.Late in the fourth, KG and Ray Allen forced Kobe 40 feet -- 40 feet! -- from the hoop.No offense can do well with their main man 40 feet from the hoop.
Rob Peterson (8:34 PM)
Hey everyone, Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and NBA.com blogger will be here in five minutes, so please send in your question now...
Rob Peterson (8:36 PM)
Hey everyone, Flea's here with me... We'll go through some questions... Send 'em along.
Rob Peterson (8:37 PM)
Flea's cheering the Lakers' introduction... so you still have time to send in questions for him. He's wearing his Kobe T-shirt.
Joey (Corona, CA)
Hey Flea, I know you're a big time Laker fan, besides Kobe, who do you think will step it up tonight?
Flea (8:39 PM)
My most fervent desire is for Lamar Odom to get in his groove and step it up big time tonight.I'm a big fan of Lamar's and he's been a little oout of sync. Hopefully, the Celtics will get a whistle blown on them for camping for five hours in the lane, because you know there is a thing as defense three-seconds.I'm not worried about what the Celtics are doing. I'm interested in putting my energy into my Laker fandom and doing my thing....
chauncey (teaneck)
when is the next chili peppers album coming out?
Flea (8:40 PM)
We're enjoying a well-deserved hiatus right now.
Aldo (canada)
Flea, how big kobe has to be for the Lakers to take game 4?
Flea (8:41 PM)
Kobe's gonna be great no matter what.I think a lot of times I think people take Kobe for granted because it's just Kobe being Kobe.SO, I expect nothing but greatness from him tonight.
Mike (Fontana, CA)
Hey Flea, Good to have someone who knows the Lakers on here. What do you think the Lakers have to do to win in Boston?
Flea (8:42 PM)
Just not get thrown out of their rhythm... continue with the tenacious Defense in Game 3 ... just stay in their rhythm and od what they do.I respect Boston, and they're a tough team. I hope the Lakers can get the Cs on their heel tonight and the momentum will shift and the purple and gold will rise.
Brandon Gonzalez (Corona, CA)
Hey Flea, what do you think Gasol has to do to be more effective tonight?
Flea (8:43 PM)
He played great D in the last game and people forget that... he played great D against KG.He needs to be more aggressive on offense, and it's great that he moves the ball, but he needs to be more aggressive taking the ball to the hole...
Sean (Atlanta, GA)
Which of these teams is really more likely to be back in the Finals next year? I keep hearing the Lakers will only get stronger with the return of Bynum... but don't they still have a tremendously harder road to get back here?
Flea (8:45 PM)
Clearly, I'm very partial, and it's difficult to be objective, but with all the objectivity I can muster...Bynum will make them much better and control the paint with Pau and Odom. The Celtics are getting older and the Lakers are younger.I see a bright future the Lakers, you can't argue with the Cs 66 wins, but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself I want to win tonight.
Flea (8:46 PM)
Thanks to everybody, peace and love, go Lakers.
Rob Peterson (8:47 PM)
Awesome! Peppers are one of my favorite bands of all time... That was cool. Here's Flea's blog if you want a taste of his Lakers' love.http://my.nba.com/forum.jspa?forumID=300017151
Grant (Peoria, IL)
Do you see either team making any Defensive changes for game 4?
Rob Peterson (8:48 PM)
Grant --Great question. I don't know if the poor shooting in Game 3 was because of great D or just poor shooting.I don't think either team will change much when it comes to their schemes, initially. The adjustments will come during the game and will be based on who's got it going on.
Diante (Texas)
Hey Rob, love reading your stuff on NBA.com, do you think we'll see Ariza guarding the C's star players such as Paul or Ray Allen?
Rob Peterson (8:50 PM)
Wow, really? I'm flattered, really I am.Anyway, I don't know how much of an impact Ariza will have. He's missed a ton of the season and there's a difference between practice shape and game shape. That's why I don't think Ariza or the Cs Tony Allen will have much of an impact. Then again, I could be wrong and will admit as much before Game 5.But I think the Cs and Lakers will dance with the players who brought them this far.
Jeremy (NC)
do you think fisher should have a big night tonight with the Celtics being without a TRUE HEALTHY Point Guard, their only true point guard is only 65 to 70 percent tonight... do you think this is when Fisher will use his experience to his advantage?
Rob Peterson (8:51 PM)
Jeremy --If Fisher smells blood, I think he'll act on it tonight... If Rondo's hobbled, I think the Lakes attack him, and attack him right away.
Dan (Los Angeles, CA)
If Garnett gets hot tonight, what are the odds PJ would bring in DJ Mbenga?
Rob Peterson (8:53 PM)
Very, very, very slim. As a matter of fact, Mbenga'll probably be inactive.
Rob Peterson (8:53 PM)
Time out, National Anthem.
Rob Peterson (8:56 PM)
All right everyone, that's it for me. I gotta get to my pressbox seat ...Thanks to Mychal Thompson, Cedric Maxwell and Flea for joining us.Enjoy Game 4.
Buzzmaster (8:57 PM)
I'm back everyone...Let's sit back, relax, and watch some NBA Finals.
Buzzmaster (8:58 PM)
Oh by the way, we can chat it up a little bit too.
Jay (NY)
Just got off the funniest train ride ever with some crazy lady yelling the whole time...hysterical...anyway I'm off tomorrow and amped up for the game. Celts by 5 and 40 verbal lashings by Kobe to his teammates is my prediction.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Where is the Staples Crowd? Boston's crowd makes it look so pathetic. Autzen makes that place look like a nursery.
SAM (Los Angeles)
Im tired of all the fake laker fans who dont get loud at Staples Center. Jerry Buss should give away tickets to hardcore fans like me who would actually make HOME COURT advantage count
Corey: (Oxford, MS)
Who do you think is in the Denali on those commercials? I'm guessing D-Wade and Barkley....
Buzzmaster (9:02 PM)
I say D-Wade. It's a bit too much for Charles.
Jay - New York
i feel like this game will decide who wins the series and it has me so nervous that im just gonna stay at work doing overtime and not watch... hopefully when i get home the score will read Celtics victory
Buzzmaster (9:04 PM)
I think who ever wins Game 4 has the best chance to win the series. I also think that you should watch the game. Work can always wait another day.
Ray (Los Angeles)
Kobe will come out attacking the rim
Randy (Michigan)
I predict that no fouls will be called all game for either team :)
Buzzmaster (9:05 PM)
funny!
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Buzzmaster, is it demoralizing to be nameless?
Buzzmaster (9:07 PM)
Not really because I know who I am on the inside and that's all that matters. (lol)
Buzzmaster (9:08 PM)
wow, off the bat KG is looking a little bit slow.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Classic #4 underway!
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Lol it's ok we love you Buzzy.
Buzzmaster (9:08 PM)
and Buzzy loves you too!
Buzzmaster (9:10 PM)
Rondo and the the rest of the Celtics are looking a little bit slow on defense.
JJ
Buzz, are you a lady buzz or a male buzz? If you are a lady buzz and you answer all my questions I will buy you flowers!
Buzzmaster (9:11 PM)
I'm a lady and thank you
Randy (Michigan)
4 FT for the lakers 0 for the celtics...conspiracy....series is tied 2-2.
Buzzmaster (9:13 PM)
Oh Celtics, what is going on?
Brian (ME)
Can already see which team the refs want to win this game. You'd think they would try and hide it better.
Randy (Michigan)
Doc starting to act like Phil Jackson.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Doc making a mistake with a technical early...
Buzzmaster (9:16 PM)
Do the Celtics look tired or is that just me?
Ben (Boston)
What's going on Celtics? Are you watching this game? Something is very wrong with the officiating....do they not think people are watching these games?
JJ
O.K. lady buzz, well just one Spurs question and I will call 1-800-flowers!What do you think of the Spurs going after J.R. Smith?
Buzzmaster (9:19 PM)
I think that would be crazy on the Hawks part. Josh is their young talent and they should keep him. I'll expect my flowers in the morning...
Paul (Anchorage, AK)
Buzz, I'm at work for another 40 min.s, is the officiating really starting out as bad as the Boston fans are saying?
Buzzmaster (9:20 PM)
it's not that bad, I do see it getting that way if Boston doesn't start to play better. Don't feel bad, I'm at work too.
Kevin (klamath falls, or)
O.K., so if the Lakers get screwed by the refs, its a huge deal, but if the Celts do its cuz the Lakers were more aggresive...Must be nice to be Kobe Lovers!!
Patrick (CT)
The Celtics don't look tired Buzzmaster, they're getting hacked out there and not getting the calls. Kudos to Rivers for picking up that technical. This officiating is atroucious.
Buzzmaster (9:22 PM)
You still have to play. The C's are missing shots and throwing the ball away. I say man up and play!
Buzzmaster (9:22 PM)
Wow, did the C's just get a foul called against the Lakers?
Dan (Orlando, FL)
The celts need to drive to t e backet and not settle for jump shots
Paul (Anchorage, AK)
WoW, you just made me realize I need a new job.
Buzzmaster (9:24 PM)
You don't need a new job if you like what you do.
Ben (Hanover, Pa)
Can I ask your dad for your hand in marriage? A girl who loves sports and has a sense of humor. Are you Erin Andrews? Amy Nelson?
Buzzmaster (9:25 PM)
(laughing) I'm neither one
Rudy (san diego)
Where have you been Lamar Odom??
Mike (BOSTON)
Buzz, you say man up and play about the C's and they bad calls they r getting; were you saying the same thing when it happened to LA, or was that really bad officiating?
Buzzmaster (9:27 PM)
I say that to both teams. You have to play your game and not let the refs dictate how you play. The more you complain, the more they are gonna call silly fouls.
Steve (MA)
Was Kobe really whining about that call earlier, he's such a little baby, its sickening
mike (new york)
enough about the officiating. the lakers are just playing much better.
Buzzmaster (9:28 PM)
Yes, they look like they want to win.
Mike (Fontana, CA)
Did anybody doubt that the Lakers would finally get on track?
Danno (WI)
Ironic that everyone was saying "Pierce and Garnett won't play that bad again". It appears as though Gasol and Odom won't play that bad again.
Adam (Athens, GA)
Lakers better not get complacent a la Celtics Game 2 4th quarter if they hope to win
Nero (los Angeles)
Celts aren't gonna go down quietly, This is gonna be an exciting game
Buzzmaster (9:34 PM)
I think so too
David, VA
"Celts aren't gonna go down quietly".... I bet LA blows out Boston by 20
Young L (LA)
This series is destined to go 7...the basketball gods wouldnt have it any other way
Randy (Michigan)
Please explain to me what place trevor ariza has in this game, he is more of a handicap then rando is for the celtics.
Buzzmaster (9:36 PM)
do you what to change that up?
CG (Waco)
See what happens when the Lakers actually speed the game up? They should've done this in Game 3 and the Celtics would be worn out already.
Jay - New York
this game is gonna be a blowout...im glad i stayed at work. what a dissapointment 2 golden opportunities to put this team away and the only one that shows up is Ray Allen
Buzzmaster (9:39 PM)
For those not watching the game...Lakers 35 Celtics 14 End of First.
Dan (Orlando, FL)
If the lakers can come back in the 4th quarter there is plently of time left for the Celts
jeremiah (CA)
lakers up 20 and Kobe has 3 points.......not looking good for the C's
JV (Amarillo, TX)
15 Free throws in the 1st Qtr., along with a Doc Rivers "T". Think this one is rigged, too?
Buzzmaster (9:41 PM)
Doc said "we just need to KEEP playing," he should have said we need to START playing.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Lakers are getting calls because they are driving to the basket, does nobody understand that that's why the Lakers barely got calls in Game 2? Jump shots won't get you calls, why do you think Pierce got calls when he drove to the basket.
Mike(NE)
Boston needs to hit some of them open shots instead of bricking everything if they want to get back into this game.
Steven(CA)
How are the Celtics gonna come back from this?
Buzzmaster (9:47 PM)
They have 3 1/2 quarters left. They'll make a comeback
Junior ( Los Angeles, CA )
Trevor Ariza, The difference in this game !!
Mike(NE)
The Celtics are being totally lazy tonight.
David, VA
Ariza is having the game of his life right now
ryan (LA)
Boston's worst nightmare: LA's bench actually showing up.
Justin (Jacksonville)
Why people still say "how are they going to come back from this" makes me laugh. There is way too much time left and teams always makes runs in the course of the game. Watch they will have it under 10 at some point in this game.
Jesse (nyc)
can anybody tell me why KG doesn't make that same spin move on Gasol every time down the floor?????
Kamran (LA)
They are not coming back from this.
Buzzmaster (9:53 PM)
The C's will make a move in the second half.
George (Los Angeles)
Where is Kobe? It seems like the Lakers are finally playing the way that got them in the finals!
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
To win this game, the Celtics need to score more points. BOOM! tough actin' Tinactin.
Randy (Michigan)
Kobe will not let the celtics come back from 21....his killer instinct is what makes him the best in the NBA.
Buzzmaster (10:00 PM)
Are the C's making their move?
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
KG is the only Celtic that showed up to play.
Miguel (Mexico)
Where is Kobe? Kobe Stats right now: 6 asists, 4 steals, 2 rebounds, 3 points (2 shots only), he´s making everybody around him better (like and MVP)
Robi (Skopje, Macedonia)
The Celtics will come back for sure..just wait for the second half..Go Celtics!
al: (nashville)
kobe is the G.O.A.T....even when he doesn't score...admit it boston fans, he's scaring you right now sitting there on your chair/couch/toilet...you guys are toast...SERIES OVER!
Buzzmaster (10:04 PM)
here we go Celtics, here we go (clap, clap)
Michael (Worcester, MA)
Al... Michael was... is... and always will be... the G.O.A.T. welcome to the NBA chat.
Jaime (San Bruno, CA)
cut it down 12 points !!??dun dun duuuun !!!
Buzzmaster (10:09 PM)
Wow...Ray Allen what are you doing?
NBA Jam (Midway)
BOOM-SHAKA-LAKA!!!
Scott (Stamford, CT)
hey buzzmaster stop being like the rest of ESPN and rooting for the Boston team...... ......
Buzzmaster (10:10 PM)
I'm not a Boston fan, but I am from the east coast. So I ride or die with the east side!
Buzzmaster (10:12 PM)
Well ladies and gents, it's almost time for me to take my break. Send your questions in for Marc Stein who will be chatting at halftime.
Marc Stein (10:15 PM)
Hello, all. Your haftime show has arrived. Didn't get a chance to talk to you guys at halftime of Game 3 because of the latest Donaghy detonations, so fire away with questions on that as well.
Scott (Manchester, England)
Kobe has been dreadful. Trade him!
Marc Stein (10:17 PM)
Your comment emanates from one of my two favorite cities in the world. But try again.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
What do you think about the lack of fire of the Celtics? They just seemed so lazy and lack luster. When KG came in for the second quarter they finally seemed to pull together. Can the Celtics come back with some energy?
Marc Stein (10:17 PM)
It's a banged-up team. I think that's a factor. But you're right. Didn't see the urgency.
Ryan (San Diego)
I think this is the Laker team we expected to see. In game 3 they were bogged down by the pressure of a must win. Now with a win, possibly 2 under their belt and the confidence going, do you see them taking one in boston?
Marc Stein (10:19 PM)
Definitely the Laker team I expected to see in this series: Kobe getting lots of help. Question is, will we see that Laker team in Boston. Story of the playoffs (or at least one of them) is home-team dominance.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
I'm sorry Marc but banged up doesn't provide a good enough excuse for the lack of energy from the team as a whole. It took a whole quarter for Pierce to realize he should drive and it's just pathetic. Don't give me that injury excuse when it's bogus and you know it.
Marc Stein (10:20 PM)
In Pierce's case I don't think it's an excuse. I said it from the minute he went down in Game 1. I didn't waste time worrying about how dramatic the whole entrance/exit thing was. The question always how he'd move from the rest of the series. Even when he was ringing up 28 points in Game 2, Pierce didn't do it on the strength of great mobility.
mark san diego
if the home team wins every game the celts will win the series
Marc Stein (10:21 PM)
Yes. That's what I was getting at.
Scott (Stamford, CT)
hey buzzmaster stop being like the rest of ESPN and rooting for the Boston team...... ......
Marc Stein (10:21 PM)
Buzzmaster is on a break.
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
Do you think the Donaghy accusations will hurt the NBA for a long time?
Marc Stein (10:23 PM)
Yes and no. I think the NBA has one huge problem in that this is in the only sport that has to deal with this conspiracy stuff and it's only getting louder every year. Some drastic has to change if the league is ever going to start chipping away at that perception.
Marc Stein (10:23 PM)
However . . .
Marc Stein (10:24 PM)
This season was astounding when you think about it. Astounding. I thought we would have been talking about Donaghy all the time. We rarely heard his name.
Marc Stein (10:25 PM)
Which suggests that lots of fans care deeply and lots of fans love the game so much that they keep watching it no matter what happens. I'm not a baseball guy so you seamheads tell me: Why hasn't the steroid scandal hurt baseball more?
Marc Stein (10:27 PM)
I grew up down the road in Orange County and the Angels always had good seats available when I was a kid, even when they had some really good teams. But now I hear it's a pretty tough ticket. Baseball is more popular than ever in my old neighborhood. Why didn't steroids hurt the game more?
Marc Stein (10:27 PM)
Just one example.
Ben (Milwaukee, WI)
Steroid hurt baseball but Selig has really worked hard to get it fixed and congress stepped in...Stern seems like he likes to put things under the rug...
Marc Stein (10:28 PM)
So you're telling me congressional hearings, which I suspect tend to be more about the politicians looking for good press than finding the truth, would make conspiracy talk stop in NBA chat rooms? If so, I'm all for it. But I doubt it's that easy.
Chris (CT)
Stern needs to stop discrediting Donaghy and laughing at the allegations and start showing the fans he understands their concern and wants to absolve it.
Marc Stein (10:30 PM)
That much I totally agree with. Some drastic, public steps have to be taken by the league to show they're serious about disproving this stuff. I, too, am weary of the arrogant response to everything ref-related.
Jordan (London, England)
Rivers' sub patterns are a head scratcher. No consistency for anyone really. Maybe PJ Brown? Odom can't stay that hot.
Marc Stein (10:33 PM)
When the Celts are flat, I'd have thought Doc's natural response would be going to Powe.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
Do you feel that Phil Jackson has finally figured out how to best utilize Odom, Gasol and the bench to attack the boston D??
Marc Stein (10:34 PM)
Don't know that Phil is doing anything different. It's Lamar's mindset. When he's one, as everyone in this chatroom already knows, L.A. is a different team.
Evan (Boston Ma)
What is up with the celtics D' that is how they got here and they are playing awful Lamar Odom is 7/7 and they are not doing anything about what do you think they should do? I think put posey on him because he can not keep up with Kobe and he seems to be a good match up with Odom and Pierce should be on Kobe.
Marc Stein (10:36 PM)
Seeing the Lakers get to the rim so early and often was a bit of a shocker.
Randy Braden (Corona, CA)
What suprises you the most about this game?
Marc Stein (10:38 PM)
Quiet Kobe. So much for everyone who thought he was going to just forget his teammates and try to win Game 4 by himself.
Marc Stein (10:39 PM)
I hope to be back with you at halftime of Game 5. Enjoy the second half.
Buzzmaster (10:41 PM)
I'm back! Let's chat!
Sid (Texas)
Kobe will light it up during this half.
SK (OC)
Go Celtics...Go Celtics!!!!!!
Mike (Toronto, ON)
Too much pressure on the Cs big three to do it all themselves, because the rest of the team is useless. Obviously, they can't handle that pressure. Lakers in six.
Ross (Seattle, WA)
There is a dude wearing a Sonics jersey courtside, people in Seattle don't even wear Sonics jerseys
Sid (Texas)
Odom came to play tonight, he was a non-factor for the first three games
Anshul (San Jose, CA)
What do you think the Celtics are gonna have to do now to take the lead back?
Buzzmaster (10:46 PM)
score and play some defense.
Evan (Boston, Ma)
How do you think the celtics will guard Odom? He is just tearing it up out there.
Buzzmaster (10:47 PM)
The same way they are guarding eveybody else. By standing around and watching them fly by.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
What pathetic defensive energy from an energy team I enjoyed watching during the eastern conference. Talk about boring to watch this domination.
John (Cloquet, MN)
The Lakers are doing a good job of stomping out the Celtics little runs.
CG (Waco)
It obvious that the Celtics is tired. Age is setting in. This is why I picked the Lakers to win this series in 6.
CG (Waco)
It obvious that the Celtics is tired. Age is setting in. This is why I picked the Lakers to win this series in 6.
Adam, washington,DC
Well the dreams finals has yet to provide an entertaining game
Chris (Los Angeles)
Hey buzzmaster, do you see Iverson getting stuck in Denver or moving onto a true championship caliber team??
Buzzmaster (10:53 PM)
I see him staying in Denver, atleast while Anthony is still there.
Mike D (Flathead Valley,MT)
For a "Dream Finals", this is the least I have watched finals games in at least 25 years!
Ross (Seattle, WA)
Buzzmaster: The C's have looked awful in two games in LA,How much does this change the momentum of the series?
Buzzmaster (10:55 PM)
it changes it a lot. Now the Lakers have confidence that they can win and that's dangerous for Boston if they go home down 3-2.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Wow what an amazing recovery by Kobe on that broken play. The chemistry Gasol brings is great.
john ny
odom is playing amazing i expect a good 4th quarter by the celtics just like the lakers had in game 2
Jordan (London, England)
With 2 days rest after this one, do you think the Celtics can regroup and make the adjustments for Game 5? I would say its a must win situation to stop the Lakers' momentum.
Stephen (Bahamas)
Boston can double Kobe and defend Gasol, but they have yet to find a way to stop the combination of the two offensively
Andrew (Los Angeles, CA)
No lead is safe as long as Vlad Radmonovic is on the floor, turning the ball over on lazy drives and standing flat footed on defense.
Jay - New York
Whoa...i was writing a letter at work...i look up and next thing i know the lead is down to 11. What is going on???? someone update me
Buzzmaster (11:02 PM)
Jay are you still at work? It's the NBA Finals man!
KB (MA)
Celtics are down by 11 towards the end of the third quarter. Is it more important to get Pierce actively shooting or Garnett
Buzzmaster (11:03 PM)
My vote is for Pierce
Steve (Utah)
Amazing how good the Lakers are when players other than Kobe actually play and don't stand around while Kobe hogs the ball.
Jordan (London, England)
Lakers look a little tired now. Crowd's been taking out of it as well. Movie stars don't cheer?
Dan (Orlando, FL)
is it me or is this crowd just not as loud as Bostons
Buzzmaster (11:07 PM)
PJ BROWN SLAMS IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robi (Macedonia)
I told you.. Boston is back!!!1
JJ
If this is still buzz lady, just saying goodnight and good job, I will watch the rest of the game, but no more questions because no one cares about the Spurs anymore... Go Spurs!
Buzzmaster (11:08 PM)
Not until next yeay anyway. Good night
Nate (VT)
How big does Farmar's buzzer 3 look now?
Jordan (London, England)
Look what happens when the Celts play a little D.
LakerMan (Los Angeles, CA)
I'm getting worried...hope our Lakers can get their defense together to pull off the victory.
Morgan (Allentown, Pa)
Hope Doc is paying Journey royalties for his "Don't stop believing" quotes
Robi (Skopje, Macedonia)
The celtincs are going to win by 3 points...
Buzzmaster (11:15 PM)
A little frustration for the Larkers?
Gill (NY)
HOW IS THIS HAPPENING WHAT'S GOING ON I DON'T UNDERSTAND
John (Los Angeles, CA)
We all knew the Lakers should not get satisfied...just shows you what happens when a team gets complacent.
KB (MA)
I think the Laker fans are letting the team down in the second half, they have hardly made any noise. If it were vise versa in Boston, the fans would still be going nuts.
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
To those who said there hasn't been an interesting game this series, I say HA!!!!!!
Ricky OH
Wow What a Game!!!
Kyle (Boston, Ma)
This is a reversal of places from game two, the home team blowing a huge lead, will the Lakers be able to take control of this game again?
Buzzmaster (11:25 PM)
Only if Kobe continues to do what he just did.
Tom (Notre Dame)
The Celtics have to break through if they hope to win. This down by 2, tied, down by 2, tied stuff doesn't work. The Lakers have the best player on the floor and, realistically, the only one who can take over late in the game.
Justin (Jacksonville)
Hey buzz, how about some props for our call earlier when we said it would be close? You and I, eye to eye. Great minds think alike!!!
Buzzmaster (11:26 PM)
Thats what they say. (laughing)
Scott (Manchester, England)
This is why we love basketball. Fair play to the Celtics, they've played with real heart. Kobe needs to take over now.
Andrew (San Diego)
I still say this will be a 10+ point win for LA before the gameis over. It's that predictable.
Dan (Chicago)
Keep thinking that Andrew, it ain't happening
Matt (Hoover, AL)
Who has the better bench? I thought it was the Lakers but I can't tell tonight
Buzzmaster (11:31 PM)
Hey Matt, is your high school football team still good?
Buzzmaster (11:32 PM)
and the C's take their first lead of the game!
Brian (Philly)
That's the jumper House missed in game 3 that turned the game around late. Huge shot.
Jay - New York
If the celtics pull off this win this series is over. it would be way too demoralizing just like a lakers comeback in game two would have been demoralizing
Jim (Baltimore, MD)
going to Odom was working for the Lakers but Kobe decided he would try beating the celtics by himself... if the lakers lose its kobe's fault
Mike (nova)
Horrible coaching by Phil Jackson. He has done nothing to get his offense in gear and little to stop Boston's momentum
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
Never thought I'd say this but get the ball to Sasha, drive and dish PLEASE.
HP (Phoenix, AZ)
This is the guy everyone compares to MJ!? Please . . . MJ brought more excitement to one game than Kobe has his entire career. He's not a closer, but a poser!
Clark (Durham, NC)
Did you see Kobe yell at Farmar as soon as he missed that open 3? The pressure is getting to him.
David (Boston)
Any update on Perkins?
Buzzmaster (11:38 PM)
Just a sprained shoulder, out for the rest of the game.
Brandon (Ashburn, Va)
I have to give the Celtics credit. They haven't quit. KG playing big down the stretch.
Zak (Tucson)
I told you Buzz! I told you the Celts would come back!
Buzzmaster (11:39 PM)
Go Celtics Go!
Bill (Atlanta, Georgia)
What the heck is going on here? Paul Pierce has proven to be Kobe's equal in this series.
Jay - New York
Would this qualify as the biggest comeback of all time?
Buzzmaster (11:41 PM)
I think it would.
Derek(Eugene, Oregon)
I have to respect Pierce, he's a fighter and he plays great defense that makes his offense look that much better.
Dan (Orlando, FL)
as long as the Celtics stay aggressive they should win this
Brandon (Louisville, ky)
The Lakers crowd is terrible. Just now making some noise.
Brian (Philly)
Sam Cassell doing the best thing he's done all year.....firing up the team on the bench.
Ryan (San Diego)
How do you call that foul with under a minute left in a Finals game? Unreal
Buzzmaster (11:44 PM)
Hey, a foul is a foul.
Matthew (Worcester, MA)
Who do you think was the key player for Game 4?
Buzzmaster (11:45 PM)
I say House!
Buzzmaster (11:45 PM)
and maybe PAUL PIERCE!
Brian (Philly)
I've always wanted to see a guy like Ray Allen on the big stage. He's been the best Celtic this series and has made Boston fans respect him.
Mike
HOUSE . knocking down 3s
Justin (Jacksonville)
Please post this my Buzzmaster genius, Kobe is not anywhere close to Jordan!! What do you Laker fans think now?
Buzzmaster (11:47 PM)
Only because you called me a genius!
Zak (Tucson)
Put it in the record books Buzz.
Chrus (Boston)
Amazing
Buzzmaster (11:51 PM)
That's all folks! It's been fun, talk to you again Sunday at 7:30 for Game 5!
