AJ Mass (10:56 AM)
Good morning one and all... time for another chat, so let's get this ball rolling, shall we?
Who do like better DeJesus or Nady in a OF/UTIL spot?
AJ Mass (10:57 AM)
I like Nady better. Slightly better hitter for power and average, and a better surrounding cast, plus the chance of a deal to an even more successful offense.
With David Ortiz set to come off the DL, would you drop Jay Bruce in a one-year league to activate Ortiz? I have Loney as well, but don't want to cut him loose.
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Absolutely. Ortiz is a top-100 player at worst, whereas Bruce is top-100 at best.
who do you like better for the 2nd half at 1B, Delgado or Pena?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Can I just say Carlos and leave it at that? No? I like Pena better, though certainly, Delgado has risen from the dead to rejoin the discussion.
Hank: (Cupcake City, MA)
What is wrong with Chris Young, the OF? I ever since i traded for him, he's hitting (and stealing bases) like he's Chris Young the Pitcher!!!
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Chris Young hates you, Hank. That whole Zona team simply isn't hitting. It shows how important Byrnes was a catalyst for that offense. Young is still borderline Top-100, but definitely on the decline for fantasy worth in '08 since those steals just aren't coming.
Charlie (Wakarusa, IN)
Love the work AJ, who are the most likely closers to be dealt and who are their replacements? Thank you
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Probably Street and Marte are the names most bandied about as trade bait. Not much in Pittsburgh to fill in with Capps out... probably Yates? In Oakland I can see Joey Devine getting a shot at the job for a bit with Casilla in the mix.
Who? (Mike Jones)
What do you expect from Milton Bradley the rest of the way? Trade him for whatever we can get?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Milton was #5 in fantasy value pre-break and I can't count on him to continue that torrid pace. He breaks down too much -- I see him as a definite sell-high, but I'm not going to simply give him away either.
What do I do at Catcher? I dropped Posada and picked up A.J. Is this good enough? I'm in second place and don't want to lose it now. Are there any young guys I should keep an eye on?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Well put me down! Actually AJ's in my Top-10 catchers, so I think it's a decent pickup. Navarro and Iannetta are also solid choices. Guys like Teagarden and Clement are more for 09 and beyond than right now.
Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)
Has Fuentes' name dropped from the ranks of tradeable closers?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Not necessarily, but with the D-backs and Dodgers doing everything in their powers to keep the Rockies in it, I'm not sure Colorado becomes a "seller" - if they drop to double-digits out in a few weeks, then maybe he and Holliday go bye-bye.
Slowey or JMaine the rest of the year? Both were just dropped and I need a SP.
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I actually have an article coming out today on Insider about overworked pitchers to be wary of down the stretch, and guess who tops the danger list? John Maine. Stick with Slowey.
Is Matt Joyce a solid option for the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Joyce is an interesting player. It was an incredibly small sample size, but his numbers for the 1st half actually rivaled the likes of Uggla, Mauer and A-Rod. But obviously, it comes down to opportunity, and while Joyce won't hurt you, I'm not convinced he gets enough at-bats to truly help you... though he's a name to remember for 09.
Matt (Manchester, CT)
Huff or Zimmerman at third base the rest of the way?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I like Zimmerman ahead of Huff by a little bit, assuming he is fully recovered and not rushing back (and with the Nats record, I doubt that to be the case).
David: (Wilmington, NC)
Can I admit to listening to Nate? Yesterday, Nate said sit R. Johnson. He said it was a "bad match-up." I, unfortunately, listened to him and sat Johnson. I'm playing the #2 team in the league and lost a win, quality start, .43 WHIP and 7 solid innings of shut-out ball.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
It was a bad matchup... but this isn't football and I don't usually worry about "bad matchups" and simply start my best pitchers...but serves you right for falling prey to Negative Nate.
All things considered, who has a better second half - Thome or Adam LaRoche?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Car Talk, Thome Thome Thome has done it again.
Randy Johnson is 13-0 career vs. the Cubs . . .how is that a bad matchup?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
If Randy had been 13-0 in his last three seasons that's one thing... considering this lineup has Ryan Theriot and Geovany Soto and not Doug Dascenzo and Luis Salazar, that stat means nothing to me.
What would you do if Adrian Beltre were on your roster?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I'd hope for a trade. If Beltre is your top 3B option, that's a problem, but I do have him #12 from this point on at 3B so its not as tragic as having DeWitt or Dobbs.
you never answer my questions (Carlsbad, CA)
whats your strategy on making a comeback in a std 5/5 roto league?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Focus on the categories where you can gain the most standings points in the least amount of time. If you're already dead last in a category like saves or steals, use players with those stats to make your deals. Baby steps.
Francouer doesn't look a whole lot better since he got recalled. Time to cut bait? Luke Scott and Scott Hairston are available.
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I like Luke Scott a lot and tried to get him in one of my experts leagues during the ASB, but alas, the other owner didn't respond to my offers. Sigh. I think Frenchy is toast w/out getting a new uni, so I'd roll with streaky Luke.
JOEY DEVINE (OAKLAND)
I WOULD CLOSE??? Huh??? What about ALan Embree or Santiago Casilla. I have never heard that I would close, please expand...
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
You have finished games before, and you have the K/9 makeup to be a closer. Your name has likely been out of the mix b/c of elbow strain. Nobody's mentioning Foulke either.
Please answer this one. I update my lineup every week and I've had an OF dilemma all season. Assuming everyone is healthy, out of Ankiel, Hermida, Pierre, and Victorino, which TWO should be everyday starters?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Pierre needs to return healthy and show he's SB-fit, which my colleague Stephania Bell says might take a while, so I can't assume he's healthy. I go Ankiel and Victorino (with a homestand) and Hermida (when Phils will be on road for the week).
Bobby (Mobile, AL)
Hudson was dropped in my league. I know you are down on him, but would you drop Harang for him?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Firstly, I'm down on all pitchers in general from here on out... in a standard league, hitters help you more than SP b/c pitchers only are rated in ratio categories and not cumulative categories (like HR, RBI, SB) so they have less impact. If K's aren't an issue, then feel free to swap them out, if not, Harang's still my choice.
Tyler (Burlington, VT)
Have you ever just left you C spot empty? It seems my options may do more harm than good. What are the chances Posada comes back? I could drop Colon and put Posada on the DL or just drop Posada outright. Iannetta is available, but will he keep it up?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Tyler touches a nerve with this. I think you have to put a body in the catcher spot if your league rules require you to have a catcher in your lineup. To leave it blank, or to keep a DL-d player in there, to me, is a copout and poor sportsmanship. Ianetta is a good pickup anyway, and should get more RBI, HR than Captain Invisible.
Greg (Portland Me)
You say you're down on pitchers for the rest of the season. What if you're near last in pitching but first in offense. Would you overpay for a stud?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
We're talking relative values, Greg. Obviously you need pitchers. But hitters have more of an impact as the season shrinks. You can have a pitcher throw three perfect games and it won't help you much if your season-to-date ERA is 5.00 and WHIP at 1.800. Having said that, if all you need is to pick up a few points, it's certainly better to have say Webb and Halladay than Ponson and Eaton.
Matt (Lewes, DE)
More along the lines of not putting players in spots. If a manager is MIA, and has a player on the DL in his spot, what can be done. The commish has the power to change his lineup.
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Not much. If it is a H2H league, it's unfair to suddenly make an inactive "active" - assuming this owner has been warned and contacted and still does nothing, you need to kick him out of the league. But you either give a new owner the reins, or you freeze the roster. You don't manage by committee or let the LM decide what's best for another team -you ask for trouble that way.
Pete, Norwood NJ
Dave Bush on the brewers - for real or not?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Not so much with the realness. I had him ranked #67 amongst SP for performance to date at ASB, and one really great outing doesn't suddenly flip the switch for me.
Keeper question between CC, Sheets, and Volquez which one do I trade?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Probably Sheets, based on the injury history. But I'd love to have all three from here on out, what's the big hurry?
Adrian Beltre (Seattle)
Why are you so low on me?? I'm 8 for my last 23?!
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Call me after your next 23 and we'll talk, Adrian.
Please help me with my question: I've been disappointed with Kelly Johnson this year. I expected a 20/20 sleeper but he's been more like a 12/12 really. Do you recommend picking up Alexi Ramirez?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I still like Kelly overAlexei Ramirez, though I'd make the move for Casilla.
Malik (Tucson, AZ)
Since the appointment of Don Mattingly as the Dodgers' hitting coach, they seem to be smacking the ball with a vengeance. I'M JUST SAYING!
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Talk to me when they're not playing in Coors.
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Just saying myself.
Should I stick with Wellemeyer or start Kershaw for this week. He's at Coors today.
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
See above exchange for answer.
My solution (as commish) when one of our H2H owners went MIA was that I continued to set his lineups as best I could with the players he had already. I only made adds when an injury required it, and no trades whatsover. Basically the bare minimum of roster management. I understand your point about it being unfair to make an inactive team active, but it's not fair to everyone else when one guy faces an automatic out each week either.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
It's a no-win situation, but anytime you, as Commish, are the one making the decision on which player goes in the lineup... there's an opening for someone saying you selected the "wrong" fill-in, or that you should have waited b/c "player X was coming off the DL, and you didn't put him back in" --- it's a can of worms I'd rather stayed sealed.
Everyone trying to get a question answered!
So it took you almost 3 minutes to write a 10 word response to the last Adrian Beltre question that didnt require any thought?! what are you doing A.J.? You would be able to answer alot more questions if you were paying attention man!
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Too busy filtering through hundreds of incredibly verbose space-stealing questions that have no relevance to this chat, but thanks for playing.
What do you do to limit league Vetoing? what do you think a league policy should be? examples please
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Very simple Ben. No vetoing. Period. It's either that or no trades. Once you decide you want to have trades, then let people trade who they want for what they want. The only true reason to veto anyway is outright cheating to build up one roster over another, and if I'm in a league with friends, or people I've played with for longer than one or two years, I've NEVER seen that kind of a deal even attempted.
Brent (Sac, CA)
Keeper league. Trade away Pence in return for Cueto? I can have two more years with each player. Thanks
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
Here's where I like pitchers better... in a keeper league, there's always going to be an OF to put up stats like Pence. If Cueto can settle in and find a groove, he could dominate.
Short and sweet
AJ Burnett buy or sell?
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
I'd buy. He's showcasing himself for a new contract, and the Blue Jays have said he's not being traded. Either way, I think there's more upside than not.
AJ Mass (12:04 PM)
Gang, that's all the time they're giving me today. I appreciate the Q's, and sorry I can;t ever get to them all. Hope you enjoyed the chat, and we'll see you the next time on Villa Allegre!
