Mark Garrow (4:00 PM)
Good afternoon everyone..let's once again get the partaaay started..
tom - wisconsin
Garrow, Awesome as always. Can you narrow these category of drivers down to two, for and two respectively??? Thanks A - 2, 11, 48, 99 B - 1, 8 ,9, 12, 16, 88 C - 15, 28, 83, 84
Mark Garrow (4:02 PM)
A..11-48..wouldn't get hurt with the 99 or 2..but 11-48 way more upside..9-88..they were both rock solid in June..the others should be okay ..only one I'd really want to stay away from is Truex..That deal at DEI is getting rough.
Joan - Laingsburg, MI
Hey Mark - You Rock, thanks for all you do here! How do you think Terry LaBonte will do this week, driving the #10 for Gillette-Evernham Motorsports instead of Kyle Petty's 45? Will we see a difference in his performance? Thanks.
Mark Garrow (4:03 PM)
Joan, Terry's just going to make laps..He should perform a little better in the 10 because GEM has better cars than the Petty's right now..but don't really expect much..in fairness to Terry..as a semi-retired guy ..rule one..keep thy backsideth in one pieceth..
Ted (Cleveland, Oh)
Another killer week Guru, my team of 48, 24, 12, 8, 19 kicked butt. How do you think 19 and 12 will do this weekend?
Mark Garrow (4:05 PM)
Ted, we'll have to take a wait and see on those two this week..Pocono usually good track for Newman but he struggled in June and finished what 18th...Sadler even lower than that..Elliott's team beginning to really get with the program. Could be another good pick this week, but we need to get a look see at the practice speeds first.
so what do u think about 22 for 84 and stewart for johnson, or maybe hamlin. i have 18,99,20,17,22
Mark Garrow (4:07 PM)
Josh, I wouldn't trade the 84 unless he's total junk in practice and qualifying. That team has found something that works and Allmendinger is driving the wheels off it. 84 was 12th in June ..22...22nd..I'd want Hamlin and Johnson on my team this week before I did Stewart.
Can't believe I didn't make your top 6 last week with my flat track history, and your mid-week chat, that's terrible. I'm back on now and everyone should be scared.
Mark Garrow (4:08 PM)
Dude, I gave you a little love Sunday morning..so calm down.
Wareagle! (Birmingham, AL)
Do you expect Allmendinger to place in the top 20? Is Kurt Busch a safe investment?
Mark Garrow (4:09 PM)
Allmendinger is turning into a regular top-15 kind of guy over the last month..and was 12th at Pocono in June so yes he can run top-20..Busch should be good for another top-10.
ray (Tampa, FL)
how does (9,20,48,84,83) sound. thank you
Mark Garrow (4:11 PM)
I think 20 will be okay, but 11 will be better..If the others perform up to standard they did in June you'll be in really good shape, but I would seriously consider selling Tony.
is this the team (20,11,48,9,84)
Mark Garrow (4:12 PM)
That's pretty good, but I think there are better picks than 20..I could be wrong and I have been many, many times..just ask my wife..lol..but I see Tony top-10 material for this race and in that price you should be buying top-five material.
Hey Mark: For my SCC game; i have 48,9,17,8,19; what do u think about it? Do u see the 19 as a bargain right now, he is putting up decent #'s; or what about this team of 48,11,9,17,84? I really need a good score this week; last 2 weeks have not been that good.
Mark Garrow (4:14 PM)
You need to be the comeback kid Jason..I think you need to find a way to get Hamlin on your team for one thing..19 was great at Indy and put together a nice race..but they are still a little inconsistent which is why I like to take a look at practice results on home first before I decide to pull trigger. Might want to go with Allmendinger..and gain some cap space to get Hamlin.
Mark Garrow (4:15 PM)
oops Jason..second team you did that and that looks pretty good on paper.
Is Stewart worth taking for the next couple of weeks?
Mark Garrow (4:16 PM)
I've got him ranked seventh at Pocono and I think there are guys underneath him value wise that will run stronger..Tony's a "tweener" in my mind..good but not great and if I'm going to spend that much $$, I want top-five potential.
question of the week-Do I roll the dice on aj allemindiger?
Mark Garrow (4:17 PM)
It's always a risk with a guy like A.J. because there's a reaons why they are so low in the owner points. However, with the way he's run lately I think it's a reasonable risk.
Mark, Is AJ Allmendinger's recent hot streak (13th & 10th last two weeks) a sign of things to come from Team Red Bull's #84 or is it just a flash in the pan? Could we be seeing the beginning of a Vickers-like run for AJ?
Mark Garrow (4:19 PM)
I don't see this as a flash in the pan..they have to take many painful steps to get to this point but brick by brick they've built a solid foundation for Allmendinger to consistently run around in the top-15.
I have held on to Tony Stewart for awhile. I know as soon as I cut him he will win. I figured he would have broken out at Indy (his track) and that did not happen. He was doing well at Pocono last race. My question is do I keep him or cut my ties. What do you think guru, Your loyal fan Beth
Mark Garrow (4:20 PM)
Beth, we all know Tony is going to win again sooner or later..but there are people below him in value that will run better..time to let go..don't look back..remember you and Tony will always have Paris....lol
Mark, I chickened out on starting almendinger and went safe with Vickers - Arrrg! Anyway, pick top 4 of these for Pocono: 12, 8, 9, 6, 88, 18, 43, 26, 83 - Thanks for the help!
Mark Garrow (4:22 PM)
I laid it out there Darryle on Sunday..Sadler and Allmendinger would be "bonus babies"...9,88,83, and probably the 8.,
Hey Mark: For my SCC game; what about this line up 48,11,17,43,19 OR 48,11,9,8,5; Do u think the 20 is going to do any better this year?
Mark Garrow (4:24 PM)
Kendrick..take the second team and put Allmendinger on it instead of 5..or Sadler if you had enough $$ to bump it up..
RAY WAYCROSS GA 31501
QUESTION TO MARK GARROW AT . 4.25 PM HI MARK GARROW NASCAR GURU WHO IT ;S GONNA BE SUNDAY
Mark Garrow (4:24 PM)
Ray, I feeling it for Denny Hamlin..
The 42 team ran well at indy before having a tire blow out..........how will they do this weekend?
Mark Garrow (4:25 PM)
There's always the possibility Montoya could do something this weekend, but I need to point out he's done almost nothing all year..and several drivers underneath him will finish better and mke you more money.
Is Pocono the most boring track to visit as far as race, excitement around the track, city?
Mark Garrow (4:26 PM)
Lee, there isn't much out there and you have a travel a little bit to get to any hotel..especially a good one..However the Mattiolli is building a big hotel-casino across from the track so that should liven it up some when that happens.
Armando (Eugene, OR)
Whats your phone num
Mark Garrow (4:27 PM)
Are you kidding me?
Corey (Sioux Falls, SD)
Hey Mark thanks for the insight!! Can pick one of each Chevy, Ford, Dodge, and Toyota. If I pick the winner right this week I get bonus points which is hugh in our league. I have 48, 99, 9, and 11 right now.....Thoughts?
Mark Garrow (4:27 PM)
There's never a sure bet..but I like the four drivers you picked out.
Marc (Gulfport, MS)
How does this race differ from the first Pocono race? Also, who do you like between the 48 and 11? Seems like Jimmie is starting to hit his stride.
Mark Garrow (4:29 PM)
There isn't a lot of time to change things between the two Pocono races so a lot of times we see a lot of similar things in the second race..I like Hamlin a little more at Pocono but do agree Johnson is starting to really get it in gear.
What do you make of the GEM cars for Pocono 'ol Guru? Kahne's win earlier this year here as well as Sadler leading some laps seem to bode well for them this time around. In addition, all 3 GEM cars ran well and finished well at the Brickyard. Top 5 possible for the 9 and 19 this week? Your thoughts?
Mark Garrow (4:30 PM)
9 and 19 should be in pretty good shapel
do you think mcmurray is getting back on track and has something to prove since rousch called him out or was last weeks 6th place finish a fluke?
Mark Garrow (4:32 PM)
McMurray scares me because he's so up and down all the time...I don't know if sixth was a fluke..but it's clearly not the norm.
Mark this past week was a mess by an standard. I have a few questions maybe you could help me with. 1) why would Nascar not have dragged tires around the speedway all night behind pickups or do something similar in an attempt to "rubber up" the track? It was very obvious that the problem was not going to go away by just running the race. 2) After the first half of the race and all the competitions cautions, why did Nascar not then leave it up to the teams to decide when it wanted to pit. By that time the teams had more than enough data to run the race based on how thier individual tire wear was. Nascar would say safety was the reason but at that point each team should have had to factor that in as well. Lond winded yes, but these are some of the questions my friends and I have debated. Thank You
Mark Garrow (4:35 PM)
Dragging tires wouldn't have helped and they could have done it until the cows come home..NASCAR couldn't leave it up to the competitors because the situation was so ridiculous there was no sense in turning anyone loose..bottom line NASCAR and Goodyear were arrogant about the tires going into the race and it bit them.
David (Jackson, KY)
ESPN's David Newton is reporting that Petty Enterprises made a hard push for Newman in the #45. Who do you think will drive that car next year -- Kyle Petty? Casey Mears? David Reutimann? Surely not Chad McCumbee ...
Mark Garrow (4:37 PM)
Just got word that Newman has now agreed in principle to sign with Stewart-Haas...and nobody in their right mind could have thought he would wind up at the Petty's..Casey Mears is also probably off the table as the driver of the fourth RCR car..Reutimann would be an intriguing possibility..but they also say Kyle will be part of the mix..so who knows..I don't think they know exactly what they want.
mike (LA, CA)
mark - thanks for the chats - can you give rough, pre-practice rankings on this group: 18,9,88,12,16,8,43,42,1,19
Mark Garrow (4:39 PM)
Here's what I'll do..I'll lay out my top-25 in pre-race rankings..which I always change a bunch after our garage walk through on Sunday mornings. 1. Denny Hamlin 2. Kasey Kahne 3. Jimmie Johnson 4. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 5. Carl Edwards 6. Matt Kenseth 7. Tony Stewart 8. Greg Biffle 9. Kurt Busch 10.Brian Vickers 11.Kyle Busch 12.Mark Martin 13.Kevin Harvick 14.Jeff Gordon 15.Jeff Burton 16.A.J. Allmendinger 17.Jamie McMurray 18.Bobby Labonte 19.Elliott Sadler 20.Martin Truex, Jr. 21.Ryan Newman 22.Clint Bowyer 23.David Gilliland 24.David Ragan 25.David Reutimann
just moved into first place. thanks for the help. how good of a guide is the first pocano race of the year for the second?
Mark Garrow (4:39 PM)
Usually it's pretty good Justin...again because of short turn around.
#24 Jeff Gordon
I heard that Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the hit TV show "24", will be the Grand Marshall this Sunday at Pocono. Is this an omen that me and my #24 car make it into victory lane?
Mark Garrow (4:40 PM)
mike (LA, CA)
mark - for my 3rd tier driver this week - 66 or 44? riggs has good history at pocono - but reutimann was better in the last race there and has run better in recent weeks - thanks!
Mark Garrow (4:40 PM)
I'd feel a little bit better about Reutimann..but fell even better about Allmendinger.
can Dale Jr win the nascar cup or not
Mark Garrow (4:41 PM)
He's got a shot but he's got to be to running a lot better than he is right now.
David (Jackson, KY)
Is it typical for you and other reporters to have drivers' cell phone numbers, or do you always have to deal with their handlers first?
Mark Garrow (4:41 PM)
David, it's a combination..but more and more the "handlers" are getting involved and it takes the fun out of it that's for sure.
Can you please rank these for me... 48,20,11,24 and 99? Thanks
Mark Garrow (4:42 PM)
Mike (Los Angeles)
Mark, here's the team: 48-11-24-2-84. That's it, that's the list!
Mark Garrow (4:43 PM)
You should do pretty well but to say that's THE list..I'm not to sure about that...lol..
Jillian (New Mexico)
My top two picks for this week are the 11 and the 99. Your thoughts on these two and do you see the following as top 10 possibilites... 9 83 20 19?
Mark Garrow (4:44 PM)
Jillian..11 and 99 should be stellar..the other four will all have top-10 potential with the 9 potential top-five.
Tazman st clair shores MI
Mark can you give me the best out of each group. A. Burton, Hamlin or someone else. B. Kahane, Truex, Reagan, Labonte or other. C. Almindinger, or ? I want to use Vickers but can only use him 3 more times, is there anybody eles in this group worth starting. Can Kahane repeat or is there someone eles you think can dominate this week. Thanks.
Mark Garrow (4:45 PM)
Hamlin...Kahne...Allmendinger yes..Kahne could repeat but that's always tough to do. He'll have a good run though.
I have the 48,11,88,84 and 83. Good to go or what?
Mark Garrow (4:46 PM)
That team could work..48,11,88 will be solid..83 and 84 could be.
Jeff Markes (Wash.)
Who finishes top 10 this weekend.....Biffle or Sadler?
Mark Garrow (4:47 PM)
Tough choice..Biffle a little more consistent but Sadler has been faster lately..Lean little towards Biffle.
I got 88, 11, 48, and 16 what do you think? Also can 88 pull it off this week he was strong the last race?
Mark Garrow (4:47 PM)
Nice little group right there Tim..if 16 comes through you should be in good shape.
I SAW YESTERDAY ON JAYSKI #40 LISTED AS TESTING TUES. AT ROAD ATLANTA. IS DARIO PRACTICING FOR MONTREAL THIS WEEKEND OR DID CHIP GET A 1 RACE SPONCER FOR HIM TO TRY TO QUALIFY FOR WATKINS GLEN?
Mark Garrow (4:48 PM)
He was testing for Montreal..it was the Nationwide Series team.
Eric (Wautoma, WI)
What's up Guru?...1st pick this week..Busch Brothers did me in last week...Who's the best pick this week?...I like Edwards, Johnson & Hamlin.....Thanks!
Mark Garrow (4:49 PM)
Sorry about the Busch boys last week..but 99,48, and 11 going to be really good this week with no shocker if all three finish top-five.
Hello Mark; For my SCC game; do u think the 19 will continue 2 put up decent #'s, they seem to be looking alot better lately. Who r some drivers to lock in that should be pretty good for the rest of the segment and who r some to stay away from.
Mark Garrow (4:52 PM)
Sadler has been coming along nicely lately no question about that but still looking for the kind of consistency that makes him a "no brainer" pick at that low price..As far as who to stay away from..that really changes week to week..but Montoya, Bowyer have hurt a lot of teams lately.
pauline - prarie view
any chance that morgan shepherd races in a sprint cup race this year or next?
Mark Garrow (4:53 PM)
It's always possible, but I don't see it for my good friend. You need to check out his website and see some of the cool stuff we do every Christmas for disadvantaged kids..if you haven't already done that.
Why did you rank Kenseth ahead of Stewart this week? No saying you're wrong, but just wondering about your thoughts on the 17.
Mark Garrow (4:55 PM)
As of late the 17 has done really well..very consistent and seemed before Indy to be on the verge of winning..Jeff Burton finished top-10 at Pocono in June, but I have lower than in my rankings because between now and then they have not run well and our staggering right now..Again it all ebbs and flows and I always try to use all the latest material available to me, which is why Sunday morning chats are so important.
Mark Garrow (4:56 PM)
Pretty nice Steve...
Oh mighty know all see all, please rank 48,24,99,11 then 9,12,88,8,19,6 then 84,44,28,66 for Pocono, I appreciate your responses your help has put me at the top of my Yahoo league.
Mark Garrow (4:58 PM)
Appreciate the kind words..11,48,99,24...9,,88..8,12,19,6..84,44, 66,28
i really thought hamlin was gonna pull that out.... is he on his way to returning to the winner circle.... sooner rather than later?
Mark Garrow (4:59 PM)
Greg, I really believe it could happen this week.
Mark Garrow (5:00 PM)
Well folks thanks for joining in and don't forget will do it again this Sunday morning at 10:30 eastern..untl then..may the "force" be with you!
