Eric Karabell (11:00 AM)
Hi there and welcome to another fantasy baseball chat session. Look at the calendar, it's a big day! Trades are a happenin'... if you have a football question, we can get to that as well... let's go!
If Fuentes does get moved (Fuentes for Lohse sounds perfect for both teams) who closes for Colorado, Buccholtz or Corpas
Eric Karabell (11:01 AM)
I don't think the Rockies have figured out their intentions yet, but I think they are contenders, for what that is worth. Anyway, all indications are that Manny Corpas is next in line, and really, he has pitched better the past two months than he did the first two, and he has closing experience.
Where would you put Farnsworth if you reranked the relievers after his trade?
Eric Karabell (11:03 AM)
Excellent question! My first thought when Farnsworth was dealt for Pudge was that the Tigers would make him a closer, though my colleagues think I am nuts. Could be. Then Fernando Rodney went out and butchered another save opp. It could be anyone, Zumaya, Rodney, Farnsworth, John Hiller, anyone but Todd Jones it appears. For now Farnsworth would not make my top 30, since we don't know if he will close, but he'd be in the Ryan Franklin range for someone who could get saves on a moment's notice.
Will (Tropicana in October!)
Why aren't the Rays full tilt on Bay? It seems skill wise, salary wise, and personality wise he would be a great fit for the team Whats the hold-up?
Eric Karabell (11:04 AM)
Well, it's not that the Rays don't want Jason Bay, but that there is a cost, and the Pirates will make teams pay. I really doubt Bay ends up in Boston in this proposed Manny deal, by the way. I think Bay could move, and the Rays really need offense, as the RF situation is no longer viable with Eric Hinske.
Will the Yanks get Washburn by 4 today, and if not, are they looking a Lohse at all?
Eric Karabell (11:05 AM)
It's all possible, but one thing to note here is that fantasy owners tend to overrate pitchers acquired by winning teams like the Yankees and Red Sox. Kyle Lohse has had a very nice season, I doubt making him a Yankee will improve his statistical lot all that much. Same with Washburn really. More run support doesn't mean he'll pitch great.
Isn't Baldelli coming back? Or can't they count on him at all?
Eric Karabell (11:06 AM)
I think the Rays figure anything they can get from Rocco is gravy, and they are not officially counting on him. Fantasy owners should feel the same way. It's sad; this guy could've been a monster.
another trade deadline approaches with no moves by the phillies..sigh
Eric Karabell (11:08 AM)
They will probably get a lefty reliever, but what else do you want? The offense is fine; I wouldn't trade for a third baseman. Manny Ramirez doesn't fit, as Jayson Werth is very productive, and he can field. A starter? Can't boot Myers yet.
Is Hudson really thinking about playing through and avoiding surgery?
Eric Karabell (11:09 AM)
No, I think Tim Hudson is done, which really stinks because I have him on so many teams, even keeper ones. Tommy John surgery just erases a pitcher from all relevance for more than a year. Ugh. Then again, Chris Carpenter looks like a success story, at least so far.
Is Inge worth picking up now that pudge was dealt?
Eric Karabell (11:11 AM)
I think Inge is going to hit his home runs. He does have power, hitting 27 homers one season. I could see five per month, but that batting average might hurt you more than the power helps.
Eric - gut reaction - how do you think Bay or Hermida would fair in Boston with a playoff atmosphere every game? I always wonder about players moving from a quiet zone to a fan frenzy atmosphere...
Eric Karabell (11:13 AM)
Gut reaction is all that stuff is overrated. They are professionals. Most of them have played in either pressure situations, or won't be affected at all. I think young pitchers are different, but not Bay or Hermida. And I don't know if the Manny deal will happen or not, but isn't it kind of irrelevant? He's going to hit no matter what, in Boston, Florida, Albuquerque. Sure, his value goes down a bit without Ortiz, but he's owned in every league anyway.
Joe (Ann Arbor, MI)
Eric, can you explain JJ Putz ahead of Hanrahan in your closer rankings? Seems like both are on bad teams (limited chances), but Hanrahan is pitching way better. Wouldn't you rather take your chances with him instead of Putz?
Eric Karabell (11:15 AM)
I think it comes down to who is proven and who isn't. Also, can the Nats get this guy a save chance? Rauch was dealt more than a week ago. I like Hanrahan's stats so far, especially the K's, and I thought I gave him a decent ranking all things considered. Maybe Putz is still hurting, but if he was, Seattle would be nuts to pitch him.
Eric, on the other hand, if Manny gets traded and the Sox get Bay, does Bay's value/stats go up being in that lineup with more protection than say a Doug Mientkiewicz?
Eric Karabell (11:16 AM)
A little, but I still think it gets overrated. How much more than normal value are you willing to deal for Bay in fantasy? He's already having a monster year.
Adam (Temple Terrace)
What is your take on Griffey to Chi Sox, immediate impact or simply apples for apples?
Eric Karabell (11:17 AM)
I don't know where he is going to play. The outfield is full, and Konerko and Thome would appear to be full-time regulars. Maybe there would be a rotation and someone would always sit, I don't know. Doesn't seem to make much sense, and the fantasy thought here is that if you own Griffey, this is not good at all.
Does the Farnsworth trade make Todd Jones officially droppable? With Leyland changing his mind in the past I was holding onto him...no reason anymore?
Eric Karabell (11:18 AM)
Yes. When I wrote Relief Efforts I thought Jones had a chance to get the role back, but now that a trade has been made, I do not. Plus, rumor is Jones has a sore shoulder, and a DL stint is pending. Now I would let him go.
What's your best guess on which player gets the biggest boost in value after 4 o'clock today?
Eric Karabell (11:19 AM)
It's almost always that unowned relief pitcher who lucks into saves. Manny Corpas would be my guess. Maybe Brad Ziegler. It's rarely a hitter.
I apologize for bringing up the much maligned Liriano name up again, but I recall you claiming he was going to be called up last weekend. Do you think he may be up this weekend or ever? Livan got messed up again last night but does it even matter anymore?
Eric Karabell (11:21 AM)
Yep, I wrote that. I'm amazed Liriano is still in the minors, and I don't know what the delay is. Maybe the Twins are waiting for the trade deadline. I don't think it's Livan on the way out, but a Glen Perkins type is bullpen bound. Honestly, I don't know what Liriano needs to do at this point, but own him in fantasy and wait.
What is your best guess as to why the Astros are not trading for young talent?
Eric Karabell (11:22 AM)
They don't post the NL standings in Houston, so the Astros believe they are 3 games outta first and should trade for old players. I don't see them rebuilding. They just dealt for LaTroy Hawkins.
Big Hurt is coming back soon, will he be of any help in power categories?
Eric Karabell (11:23 AM)
Sure, I think Thomas can help fantasy owners, and one would think he will be mainly the regular DH, meaning Jack Cust has to play left field.
Jasper (winter haven)
Is BJ Upton a huge Buy-Low or is he just a steals-guy down the stretch? Thanks EK.
Eric Karabell (11:25 AM)
I am a bit surprised he's going to fall this short of 20 home runs, but he might steal 50 bags, so how can we complain? I don't think he's necessarily a buy low, just someone who will keep going like this.
EK, does Shoppach finish a top ten C?
Eric Karabell (11:28 AM)
That was quite the night for Shoppach, eh? No catcher in history had ever had five extra base hits in one game. I don't think he's top 10, but I don't see Victor Martinez stealing his playing time, so Shoppach should remain productive.
Tim (St. Louis)
I think the Loshe trade would be a very big mistake for the Cards we have plenty of minor league talent to give up for relief pitching. Who do you think they will go after Thanks
Eric Karabell (11:30 AM)
I've heard about Lohse possibly being on the move. My take is the Cardinals could get Adam Wainwright back in a week or so, and he could fit really nicely in the closer role, eh? If the Cards move Lohse, one would assume Wainwright goes to the rotation though. I don't know what the Cards would be acquiring.
It would take two seconds to answer this Eric, C'mon...Lohse/Hardy or Marcum/Alexi Ramirez...Thanks
Eric Karabell (11:31 AM)
Probably the Lohse side, because Marcum does not look like the same guy from the first two months. Don't be surprised if Alexi Ramirez is the White Sox starting shortstop starting tomorrow.
is laroche's injury anything to worry about or will he be back in a week or so and keep mashing the ball?
Eric Karabell (11:32 AM)
It's a rib/back problem, and I wouldn't assume he's back that soon. What a shame, since he was really hitting.
LOOK AT MEEE!! Do you see the inevitable return of Nelson Cruz being triumphant or same old story?
Eric Karabell (11:35 AM)
Nelson Cruz is mashing the ball in the minors, I mean he could hit 50 homers. Now he hasn't hit much in the majors, and he has had chances. That doesn't mean he won't hit if recalled soon, but I would be surprised if he doesn't get a chance very soon. He's worth the speculative pickup just in case.
Since I don't have to ask about any pending Phillies moves I can just think straight fantasy here. How likely is it Samarzjda takes over as the closer if Wood is out for an extended period of time? Go Phils, Thanks Eric
Eric Karabell (11:36 AM)
I think it's a lot more likely Carlos Marmol is the closer, unless his command problems become a major issue. Samardzija is raw and unproven, and I really doubt Piniella would trust him with a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning.
Any word on who would be going to the reds from the sox? I feel if it is a fields or a good MLB ready OF that is where the fantasy importance is.
Eric Karabell (11:37 AM)
I heard Nick Masset might be in the deal, and he's pretty much a swingman at this point who walks people. I doubt Griffey would cost that much, since he's a 2-month rental and not the youngest chap.
what do you think of the pittsburgh closer situation after yates steller performance?
Eric Karabell (11:38 AM)
Yates got the first opportunity after the Marte trade, so maybe he really is the guy. Grabow pitched the seventh inning that day, and rumor is he's moving on anyway. So at this point, I'd say Yates, though there are rumors Matt Capps could return this season.
Tucker, Chandler, AZ
Arthur Rhodes just got dealt...What will his role be in Florida...a one out left handed specialist, or an 8th inning set up man?
Eric Karabell (11:39 AM)
I would think he's an indication Taylor Tankersley couldn't cut it as the lefty guy. He's not going to get saves.
FYI: Griffey just signed off on the deal to the White Sox.
Eric Karabell (11:39 AM)
Beats me on this one. Maybe Konerko is getting benched. Can't be any of the others.
What do you mean Alexei moving to SS? Orlando has been on a tear. Is this a defensive move or do you think Orlando is going to start losing time?
Eric Karabell (11:42 AM)
I've been hearing that Orlando could be on the move, possibly for Huston Street... Hmmm.... And Alexi Ramirez is a natural shortstop. But now that Danny Richar has been moved to the Reds in the Griffey deal, who knows... (sarcasm)
Breaking news- Todd Jones was placed on the 15 day DL.
Eric Karabell (11:43 AM)
I called that one last night. Shame, because Todd is a really nice guy. But clearly he wasn't pitching well.
Fernando (Pembroke Pines)
Hey Eric, Carpenter did have a nice game yesterday, but how deep can we look into his performance against a line up absent of Chipper and Tex?
Eric Karabell (11:45 AM)
Agreed, in part, but he had good movement on his pitches, and I don't generally buy into the theory that bad offenses make bad pitchers look so much better. There are times the Nationals pound decent hurlers, too. Carpenter isn't totally safe, but if he ever got pounded it would be because he's hurt, so then he'd go on the DL and wouldn't hurt you much. Got that? I think he'll be good.
so who plays OF in cinn now? I can't believe they did not get anderson.
Eric Karabell (11:46 AM)
Jay Bruce goes to RF, where he belongs, Jerry Hairston is the center fielder and Keppinger keeps his job.
Assuming Farnsworth takes over as closer, who gets more saves the rest of the season: Putz or Farnsworth?
Eric Karabell (11:46 AM)
I don't assume either of these guys will get more than 5 saves. I think both will, and I'd take Putz first, but at this point Rodney and Morrow could be the closers still.
Why does nobody want Dunn?? He K's a lot, but really who cares as the production is there. I assume his value stays more or less the same with a trade?
Eric Karabell (11:47 AM)
Yeah, whether in Cincy or Tampa or somewhere else, he is what he is, and he's always underrated.
Rob (State College)
What do you think of Kershaw for a spot start tomorrow against Arizona? Do I trust that sharp performance against the weak Nats or is he more the 5 ER guy he was at Colorado?
Eric Karabell (11:48 AM)
I know a lot of people who trust him, but I want to see more outings like that first. That's just me.
Speaking of Hairston Jr, when will he be activated and how will he produce?
Eric Karabell (11:49 AM)
I don't see why he wouldn't go back to leading off and stealing bases. It's a hamstring, but he could be back this weekend, and I'd expect decent stats. His problem is durability, apparently.
Eric, please rank from here on out, Dave Bush, Kevin Slowey, Sean Gallagher, Josh Johnson, thanks!
Eric Karabell (11:50 AM)
I'd probably go Slowey first, then Bush, Gallagher and Johnson. Only Slowey is someone I would trust.
Malik (Tucson, AZ)
TMR seems to love Josh Fields. WHY??
Eric Karabell (11:51 AM)
The guy has 35-home run potential, Fields that is. I liked Fields, too. Still do. He's a strikeout guy, but clearly has major pop.
Dave Bush (Brew-town)
I hate my platoon situation. Ugh!
Eric Karabell (11:51 AM)
I do, too, but then again, pitching poorly over the weekend was not a way to get it changed. Big outing for Bush against Harden today.
J. Baker (Newark, NJ)
Beating the rush to the wire - J. Devine or S. Casilla?
Eric Karabell (11:52 AM)
I think Casilla is ahead in the save race there, because of Joey's health.
Dear sir, talk to me about my friend Micah Owings. Is he Ok? Will he return to MLB?
Eric Karabell (11:53 AM)
He was a bit overrated in April, as everyone looked at his bat, and not the average nature of his pitches. He should be back, but he's no lock to start again.
when do you see pena from tampa starting to put up the numbers everyone believes he can? will last nights bomb turn a hot streak into normal production?
Eric Karabell (11:54 AM)
I don't think much is going to change with Pena. He'll hit 30 home runs, but the batting average is kind of a drain.
Will Delmon Young have a power surge this year?
Eric Karabell (11:55 AM)
I think at this point it would not be prudent to expect 20 home runs from Delmon in 2008.
EK - Rest of the Way: Parra or Buchholz?
Eric Karabell (11:56 AM)
I have to take Parra, despite the Wednesday outing. Buchholz looks terrible, and as soon as Bartolo Colon is ready, that switch looks likely.
Any news on Manny Ramierez?
Eric Karabell (11:57 AM)
I hear he is on the trade block.
Buzzer beater, rest of the way tulo or Peralta?
Eric Karabell (11:57 AM)
I would take Tulowitzki. Big final two months coming for him and his team.
jared (columbus ohio)
i know this isn't fantasy football but would you take LTor AP
Eric Karabell (11:58 AM)
Finally a football question! I take LT, and I rank Peterson fourth. Yep.
Should I trade Carlos Quentin for Vladimir Guerrero and Aaron Rowand in a 10 team, h2h, keeper league?
Eric Karabell (11:59 AM)
Yes, if you have the room for both, why not. Depends who you would be dropping.
Is Alexi Casilla really done for the year?
Eric Karabell (11:59 AM)
Sadly, it appears true.
Dominick (New York)
Eric Karabell (12:00 PM)
Not yet, but tune in later. We'll have reaction to all trades online and on video... Thanks for all the great questions. The underrated Keith Lipscomb has the chat later today, be nice to him... thanks again for tuning in, have a good day.
