Amy Nelson (9:09 AM)
Hey everyone. We'll be starting the chat in less than an hour. Send in your comments or questions and I'll try and read some of them on the air.
Amy Nelson (10:03 AM)
Ok guys we're to get started here today...
Bret Favre (WI)
Am I going to play for the Jets this year?
Amy Nelson (10:03 AM)
great question ... what about the bucs?
Michael (Connecticut)
Brett Favre should just retire already. He's overstayed his welcome!
Ryan (Pittsburgh)
Brett Favre retired?
Amy Nelson (10:04 AM)
um, no. sent in his reintstatement papers
Bret Favre (WI)
No more questions about me please
Amy Nelson (10:04 AM)
brett i think many people are on overload with your story.
Aaron Rodgers (WI)
I think my career is over before it even started
Amy Nelson (10:06 AM)
gotta be difficult for this guy, no matter what happens
Paul (Ft Worth)
Ron Artest just gave me a reason to travel to Houston...
Ben [19] (Winter Park, FL)
I wonder what-or-who will dominate today's discussion? I'm getting GREEN about the gills just thinking about it. Almost makes we want to jump into the BAY, you know? PACKERS.
Chris (Virginia Beach, VA)
Amy, im assuming you have a journalism degree from Michigan, so how do you feel with about this Brett Favre, supposedly the top story at ESPN, and not something important?
Amy Nelson (10:07 AM)
i don't have a journalism degree from michigan (my whole family went there, i did not) i think it's crazy but i think it's more the packers fault and favre's fault. this should have been resolved long ago
Josh (Texas)
I'm rooting for Aaron Rogers because none of this is his fault yet you have Packer Posers wanting him to get hurt.
chris (san marcos, Texas
Will somebody tell Ted Thompson just to release Farve and go their seperate ways...If they think he is that bad they should want him to go to the vikings
MIKE (LOS ANGELES)
If you were a Red Sox fan at Fenway were you rooting to see a no hitter last night with 1 out in the 9th agianst your team
Monty (North Carolina)
I think it's time for packers to say bye bye Frave. This guy has held this team hostage for the last 4yrs. In 2006 he had Packers in Limbo with not letting them know if he was coming back and you had all those Qb's in that draft.
Josh(Orrville, OH)
Hey Amy. I would have liked to see the Cavs pick up Ron Arrtest, but since the Rockets picked him up, does this make the Rockets a favroite in the West? I really think so with Rons defensive ability.
Amy Nelson (10:07 AM)
i think it's a great move for houston. mcgrady's got to be pretty psyched
Kyle Orlando FL
Is it possible that if my bucs traded for Farve, they could turn around and trade him to Minnesota?
Amy Nelson (10:08 AM)
kyle i'll be askign skip and jeff chadiha om air what they think of this, because you're not the first person to write something along these lines..
Daniel Avalos (North Carolina)
Someone should fire Ted Thompson and realize that competition is good.
Ben from Iowa
I think the Brett Farve situation is just a case of Brett Farve "crying wolf" too many times and that would tend to make people mad. I see both sides of the story but Brett made a decision (crying while doing it) and he should have to live with it. No one person should be greater than the franchise or game!
Monty (North Carolina)
I wish the Larkers Could've got Artest
James (Santa Barbara)
As much as I want to believe that the Teixeira deal will help the Angels, I can't help but think that this October will be the same as every other. The Angels will seem like they have it all going and then Boston will sweep them again. Manny owns K-Rod and it seems that they can't beat the Red Sox when it counts. BTW, tell ESPN to put you on TV more-you're the best
Amy Nelson (10:10 AM)
well, thanks. i don't know man, just look at what happened before tex even STEPPED into the clubhouse. i think this team finally might make it past the first round. you should have seen the clubhouse after they were swept by the red sox last year; it was almost as if hardly anyoen cared. lackey was one of the only ones who was actually pissed they weren't moving on
Andrew (NY)
The trade of Teixeira to LAA makes them the front runners to win the World Series
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
I cant believe that the Yanks are blowing their chance to catch the Red Sox...losing to Baltimore?! BALTIMORE?! I didnt even know they were still playing baseball in baltimore!
Michael (Connecticut)
Let's remember Amy, they won the World Series just 6 years ago. People tend to forget that
Amy Nelson (10:11 AM)
yes they do.
Josh (Orrville, OH)
Wow, would Jon Gruden really trade Favre to the Vikings if the Bucs got him first? Being a former coach of the Packers. That would be a very low blow.
Amy Nelson (10:12 AM)
gruden wants to win, i'm sure he and the bucs will do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Aaron( oak Island, nc)
brett just wants to play so let him play and he should definently go to the panthers. finally get rid of delhomme and bring in brett. he will have a new OL, Killer receivers and some good running backs. PLEASE!!!
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
I seriously doubt that Goodell would let the Bucs, Jets or any other team trade Brett to the Vikes. That's shady business and I'm sure that the Pack will want to get some sort of assurances that it won't happen prior to trading him.
OJ (Hillside, NJ)
Artest brings more defense to houston and now mcgrady does not have to play defense on the best player
Chris: Jacksonville, Fl.
With the texiera trade to the angels it should we all just crown the angels AL champs? WS CHAMPS?
Amy Nelson (10:12 AM)
we'll see, but they are now one of the favorites.
terez palmer (east st. louis)
I think whatever the packers do is best for the team, there is no I in team, Brett fARVE did this to his self. PS regarless what my favorite sports analys Skip Bayless say.
Dan (Atlanta)
It's obvious the Packers do not want Favre in G.B. and are ready to move on with Aaron Rogers. Brett wants to be released, so why doesn't he show up and force their hand. It doesn't look like a trade is going to happen, so if he shows up, they are either going to have a $12 Million dollar backup or just release him.
aaron (va)
i think that Mark Teixeira will put a wrench in the angels plans. He doesn't seem like he will fit in. The whole time that he was in Atlanta he said he wanted to sign an extension. He is only playing for money.
Amy Nelson (10:14 AM)
any clubhosue with torii hunter in it is a hard one to disrupt. unless it was bonds coming in...
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
If the Packers won't take Brett back as a starter, they need to welcome him as a backup. In the scenario that Rodgers gets injured or doesn't perform well, Favre would serve as a great security blanket.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
People romaticize legends after they are gone. Everyone seems to forget last offseason when it seemed all the analysts were telling Farve to STAY AWAY! Lets not forget the NFC Championship game people...also...what's Farve's record AT HOME in the playoffs? I remember losses to Vick and Eli recently...
Michael (Connecticut)
I disagree Aaron. Teixeira is used to playing in the AL west, so it will fit.
Jackson, Mississippi
If Favre plays this year, Are we to go through this all over again next year? the year after? Trade him to some team that wants to deal with it full time. Green Bay has made it clear they don't. Joshua
scott (dallas)
It's July the middle of the baseball season why do I have to hear about Farve every 5min. How bout them Cubs or the brewers or whitesox enough Farve. We don't know anything any way
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Well Amy, looks like the Braves are working hard to become the Pittsburgh Pirates South. Bobby Cox has now led the team to a sub-.400 record since getting his contract extension. Why won't the Braves just cut him loose and bring in a manager that might breathe some life into the team? They've been stagnant for almost three years now.
Amy Nelson (10:18 AM)
i don't think that's going to happen. keep in mind that the braves have suffered through myriad injuries over the years ...
Chris (East Lansing)
Oh yeah, the Artest trade is huge. McGrady will no longer have to share any of the "guarding the main guy" responsibility. Artest is the shutdown corner of the NBA.
syracuse, ny
do you think the sox should trade manny? and if they do what should they get in return??
Amy Nelson (10:20 AM)
i don't think so. he'll be gone by end of the year. i was talking to a former player in boston the other day and he said, "what could they possibly ever get in return, it's your four-hole hitter?"
justin (tampa florida)
should the yankees land jarrod washburn, i think that would fullfill their pitching rotation problem and they would win the division. what do you think amy?
Amy Nelson (10:20 AM)
don't know if washburn is their savior, but he gives them another option, and a veteran who's pitched in the playoffs before. can't hurt...
Paul (Indianapolis, IN)
I have never seen such an explosion over ego in my whole life. Only Farve has enough on his resume to deserve an ego. What has Thompson done in his career to equal the legend of Farve
Tyler (Verona, WI)
Do you think that the Brewers will by the end of the season end their 26 year playoff drought? If so how big of a run in the playoffs will they make?
Amy Nelson (10:21 AM)
tyler i still think they'll make the playoffs, but man, the cubs played them tough this series so far. and st louis is still in it. what a colossal disappointment if they don't
Bob Buffalo NY
Washburn??? The Yanks got Pavano coming back..They're all set....
Amy Nelson (10:22 AM)
i'll believe it when i see the guy throw a pitch, and then stay in the bigs without getting hurt. i think it's funny george king, the yanks beat writer for the ny post, nicknamed him "american idle"
Patrick (New Orleans)
Is it me or does anyone realize that Brett Favre's performance last year was an abberation? Prior to last year, his numbers were declining! I hope he gets traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That way, my Saints would have an easier path throught the NFC South!
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
By adding Artest to the mix, the Rockets have one of the deepest teams in the league. With a core of McGrady, Yao, and Artest, Houston has the scoring, size, defense, and experience necessary to take them deep into the playoffs.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
Hey, Johnny in Scranton, no way anyone should blame the Braves woes on Bobby Cox. Its the corporate ownership. They obviously don't care about winning like Ted Turner did. The payroll continues to decline so the talent pool has shrunk to Chipper, McCann and a bunch of 2nd tier players. Bobby is still a terrific manager, he just needs more talent to work with.
tom (kentucky)
I dont think they should trade him(Manny) because they would be losing there best right handed batter. But he was doggin it down the line last night he just doesnt want to be there
Amy Nelson (10:23 AM)
yeah, most players don't want to be no-hit, clearly that wasn't the case with manny last nite.
Zach, Centreville Maryland
Now that the Twins are only a 1/2 game out of the Central, when are they going to make the smartest decision for their ball club and finally premote ace in waiting Francisco Liriano? I mean come on now if their worrying about aurbitration, then they have no right to be in the place that they are in. I mean come one how can you keep running out Livan Hernandez to pitch important innings against other teams aces and still be in the hunt for the division. it really just doesn't make sense to me.
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
the only reason they have livan int hat rotatin is becase he's an inning eater, and he's good for that young staff. liriano will be up, just maybe not yet.
JOSIAH (Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Skip is absolutely right! If Brett walks through the doors of that Green Bay locker room, this mess will be over faster than Ted Thompson can say "Minnesota or Bust!"
John (Tampa)
You actually can blame Bobby Cox look at Tampa Bay and Florida they both are winning with almost no pay rolls. The Braves have always had a strong farm system so Bobby Cox should be to blame.
Chris (Philadelphia)
Did anyone see Manny show no hustle is last nights game. Terry Francona needs to bench him until he is traded or he starts to hustle.
Nick (MN)
Why are you people at ESPN talking about the Twins and White Sox battle? Its way better then the Cubs and Brewers!
Amy Nelson (10:25 AM)
why do you say that?
Michael (Connecticut)
Diamondbacks will win the west with...get this, a 78-84 record!
Amy Nelson (10:26 AM)
had one player in that division tell me the other day he thinks it's an absolute joke. that one team can barely swim above .500...pathetic is what he called it.
Aaron (va)
Although i don't think that bobby cox is the reason that the braves are playing the way they are ( it goes without saying injuries did that) it is time that he steps down, and hands the reins to Terry Pendleton
Chris (East Lansing)
Did anyone catch Dave Trembley in the audience on Regis and Kelly yesterday? Regis dissed him by casually and brutally mentioning they were in the cellar, and so The O's decided to sweep the Yanks. Way to go Reeg.
Amy Nelson (10:27 AM)
wow really? that's amazing i'll have to ask him about that.
Michael (Connecticut)
The worst in AL East will finish better than the DBacks I think
phil (ann arbor)
to the people blaming bobby cox, he can only do so much with what he is given. blame the ownership and the gm (frank wren)
Vince (Tampa FL)
Amy, Will this start from Myers maybe bring him back to his old form for the Phillies
Amy Nelson (10:29 AM)
you never know how and what motivates players
Anthony (Suffolk,VA)
Shutting out the Nationals is not a difficult task.
Josh (Orrville, OH)
That could be something the Indians can shoot for. Finish last in your division, but have a better record that the N.L. west winner.
Christy (England)
Do you think that Manny should be traded to the Yankees?
Amy Nelson (10:29 AM)
is that a serious question? never.
Monty Singh (DC)
Ron Artest landing in Houston is the biggest move this off season. He flourished under Rick Adelman in Sacramento. Artest can also take pressure off McGrady. The Rockets can also run a smaller and effective lineup if have to with Alston, McGrady, Battier, Artest, and Scola.
Adam (OH)
"The ageless one" Randy Johnson is pitching like he's 32 again. While it's a super week division, all you have to do is be a division winner and get into the playoffs, then anything can happen.
JOSIAH (Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Maybe Mark Teixeira should be the Packers QB! He's got as many NFL starts as Aaron Rodgers...
Aaron (va)
If i was the dbacks i wouldn't trust randy johnson. anyone that goes from throwing high 90's low triple digit heat to throwing an eephus is at the end of the road.
Adam (OH)
CC Sabathia was a good trade by the Indians. He was offered 18 million over 5 years, but declined. He's a money hungry hired gun. If he wanted to stay on the indians roster, 18 million a year is very solid. Obviously he isn't a team player.
Christy (England)
why not the yanks got johnny damon, why not add manny too
Amy Nelson (10:36 AM)
damon was a free agent. these teams would never trade with one another.
nick (milwaukee)
The Brewers got exposed last night. A good pitcher knows if they can get past the 5 sopt there is a way out. If we don't hit home runs we can't move runners station to station. The cubs on the other hand don't have an easy out in their lineup, and won't swing at anything out of the strike zone.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
CC is looking out for himself...why should he stay when he can get 100+million from the big market teams...and have a chance to win year in and year out? The yanks will pay him twice what Cleveland would have...
Amy Nelson (10:36 AM)
and he'll get pressure from the union if he passes up millions of dollars...
Carl (Texas)
First off I gotta give a shout out to my hometown Valdosta for winning the Titletown vote. As for Bobby Cox he won't get fired. The owners are a joke now and are running the team into the ground slowly but surely.
Damian (Pittsburgh)
Skip, Montana did not create a circus when his career was winding down because he has something Favre will never have. Class.
Amy Nelson (10:37 AM)
rouch!
Adam (New York)
Regardless of the fact that Theo would never send Manny to an AL East team, how many outfielders do the yankees have. They dont have room for manny regardless of how good he is.
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
Manny will sign with the Mets next year. Omar Minaya loves him and is the only GM that will pay Man Ram 20 million dollars next season. Manny can be Manny in NY
Amy Nelson (10:38 AM)
he sure can.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
exactly amy. CC taking less money hurts other pitchers on the market---as agents use big name deals to get deals for other players. I doubt that he would have had much support had he stayed in cleveland. Thats the same reason the braves werent going to be able to keep Texiera.
Chris (East Lansing)
Mike and Mike made raised an interesting question this morning: If you were at a stadium, your team will obviously lose and the opposing pitcher is pitching a no-no, would you rather see it broken up by your team or get to see it succeed and be part of history?
Amy Nelson (10:39 AM)
see history, for sure.
chris (CT)
Is anyone taking note that the brewers are pitching CC like they are not going to resign him. He pitches a complete game every night almost that could be trouble for seasons down the road
Amy Nelson (10:39 AM)
and with all the speculation that he wore down last year, i'm a ltitle surprised too.
Zach (Hartford, WI)
The Rockets did a good job by getting Ron Artest and giving up very little for him. His defense and scoring abilities will help the Rockets become a championship contender.
John (Tampa)
Montana didn't have as much of an argument Steve Young just had an MVP season and Joe Montana came off a career threatening injury Brett Farve is healthy and coming off a pro bowl season not a good analogy
Brad (North Dakota)
The Braves have had some bad luck with injuries this year; they do have talant but this just goes to show you how tough it really is to win every year and how remarkable their 14 year run was!
Ken (Garnerville,NY)
Do you think there will be more nba players opting to go overseas for bigger money than they would get stateside?
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
i'm not an NBA expert, but i think that potential storyline is very intersting. i have a friend who's now a season ticket holder in atlanata and when childress left, he's now afraid josh smith will too...
Carl (Texas)
Break up the no hitter is the my answer. It's not a good thing to see your team get beat like that.
scott (dallas)
Manny doesn't care about the team the fans the city or the planet he plays for. Manny cares about Manny
Colin (Ohio)
Is there anyone else here who thinks the judge went easy on Tim Donaghy?
Brad Harsel (North Dakota)
why do you think they are letting him complete games nightly; they know they won't resign him and are going to get as much out of him as possible
Tyler (Tucson)
With the Brewers' bullpen, I'm not too surprised.
Amy Nelson (10:41 AM)
good point.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
I think that the later 1st round and 2nd round players are going to seriously look at going overseas...if anything its going to hurt depth on NBA benches.
John (Tampa)
Does T.O. ever shut up? I used to love T.O. and his creative celebrations but now he's just a broken record. I wonder if T.O. has ever said he was sorry or my badd?
Michael (Connecticut)
Yes, we're seeing a new T.O.!
Josh (Texas)
Donaghy got off easy but since he talked he got months cut off his sentence. It's only the tip of the iceberg because Stern is praying nothing else is found out.
Colin (Ohio)
I think that Skip needs to give T.O. a little credit because he is changing somewhat for the better
Adam (New York)
Amy, any idea when Cien Ming Wang is coming back (or if he's coming back). If the yankees are within a couple games of the division at that point, i think he's a big difference maker.
Amy Nelson (10:45 AM)
adam, i havent heard lately, but i know cashman said they are not counting on him at all for the remainder of the year. anything else is gravy.
Josh (Texas)
Skip is being a hypocite through this whole Favre mess. If this was TO he would be all over him but since this is Favre he's giving him a free pass because he played there for years? That's like saying a husband can cheat on his wife because he's been faithful for many years. I'm done talking about the diva QB now.
Chris (Philadelphia)
T.O is getting older and a little wiser. He is on a good team and is not going to risk being a problem and being traded to a team that will not make the playoffs.
Zach (Hartford, WI)
The Brewers are definitely postseason bound. Even though they lost the fist two games against the Cubs, in the end, CC, Sheets, and Ryan Braun won't disappoint.
AIRIC (PA)
Ron Artest makes the Rockets a legit contender only if T-Mac and Yao stay healthy. Artest along with Battier give the Rockets the much needed Defense they have been lacking recently.
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
I have to agree with Chris. CC was getting hit around in that game and they still pitched him 120+ pitches. I can see the high pitch count to get the complete game, but to get through 7 innings? The Brewers don't trust their bullpen and are willing to burn CC out. It's only gonna get worse if they start wondering whether he can go every 4 days rather than 5.
Desmond:(shreveport,louisiana)
the yankees should trade jeter for jose reyes (and by the way, favre is Coverboy For Madden NFL 09 :) )
Amy Nelson (10:47 AM)
desmond, Ok you've written this in like 10 times. clearly, you are insane if you wanted it posted that badly. i think i need not comment on the insanity of your suggestion.
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
Amy do you think the New York Yankees are going to make a run for the pennant in the AL East?
Amy Nelson (10:47 AM)
absolutely.
Vince (New York)
I agree with Airic. If Artest stays out of trouble, the Rockets can be a legit West contender
Carl (Texas)
The Rockets are scary now but weren't they scary last year and the year before? I can't pick them until they actually prove that they can get past the 1st round.
Alex (Maryland)
how can skip say that Ron Artest is worth the risk when he is just as much of a cancer as TO... and we all know how he feels about TO
Chet (LA)
It must be humid in Shreveport today.
Chris (Philadelphia)
Hey Zach stop thinking with your heart and start thinking with your head, the Brew Crew is going to be watching baseball on tv when it comes to September.
Adam (Ohio)
Good Point Josh, It is interesting to hear Skip rip apart Lebron James, a team oriented guy, and then get behind Favre, who is obviously about himself.
Mike (NYC)
Agreed TO proved that he is a real person by helping out that reporter who got hit by a car after the ESPYs
justin (tampa florida)
jeter for jose? are you freakin crazy! hmm... four rings to none? I think i'll take the captain of the most historic sports franchise ever!
Amy Nelson (10:49 AM)
it's really not worth discussion, but reyes is how old? nuff said.
Adam (New York)
Amy, although i've heard Pennington is outperforming Clemens in training camp, dont the jets realize that he wont perform in actual games. He's completely hindering the growth of that football team.
John (Tampa)
The Rockets will never get past the first round as long as they have McGrady the king of playoff choking
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
No doubt that Ryan Braun is one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now. But, with Prince Fielder's power outage and frustration at the plate, Braun is gonna be looking at meaningless at bats until Prince gets back in check. I wonder if Prince is second guessing that decision to go vegetarian.
Mitch (Lima, Ohio
The Brewers are last years Phillies, a lot of offense, no bull pen. If they make the playoffs it will be a first round exit.
Robert, Wisconsin
Let's be real about this Favre thing for once. Most analyst on ESPN won't admit it, but everyone is tired and has lost a lot of respect for Favre. He's worse than the boy who cried wolf.
Adam (ohio)
It's up to Yao Ming and if he can stay healthy. Both T-Mac and Artest are talented, but have questionable team orientation and determination. T-Mac still has never won a playoff series. I think the Rockets should focus on winning one of those before looking at anything else.
Adam (New York)
Because jeter won the rings all by himself right? i'm a yankee fan and i'd take reyes in a milisecond.
zack (gainesville, fl)
as much as i love jeter he hasn't showed up since 2000. i love the guy but i would take reyes in a heartbeat. im not saying hes overrated but since the 90's jeter hasn't been the same.
Chet (LA)
Mitch in Ohio, the difference between the Phillies last year and the Brewers this year is the starting pitching. The Phillies didn't have any and the Brew Crew have CC, Sheets and a very underrated Manny Parra.
John (Tampa)
Prince Fielder leads the league in game winning RBI's I think he's doing okay
nick (milwaukee)
Doesn't a player earn the right to change his mind (Favre) when he has left everything on the field for 16 years and been so successful. We were dismal for a good twenty years before Brett came along and deserves better than being held hostage by Ted Thompson and HIS ego.
chris (CT)
Pennington gives the Jets the best chance to winw because he makes smart decisions and manages the game. Clemens isnt a gun slinger and isnt a guy who can carry a team under pressure
chris (CT)
why is everyone hationg on jeter, im a mets fan and last time i checked jeter started the allstar game and reyes watched on tv. its not all about numbers people its about character
John (Tampa)
Are these guys retarted? Jeter is one of the most consistent players in baseball
Adam (ohio)
Hey Adam(New York)... Pennington seems to have a head on his shoulders, and is a proven all pro level QB when he has a line. His arm isn't strong, but that's way overrated in today's game. I think the Jets should get a line, then Pennington will shine as he did his first few years.
nick (milwaukee)
The brewers are too feast and famine to beat the cubs in the post season. They strike out way too much and not good enough with runners in scoring position. When you need a single or a bunt to move runners over we can't get the job done.
Nazih (Youngstown, OH)
So what Favre wants to play again. Why is that so bad? Maybe he realized he better play as long as he can b/c in a few more years he can't play ever again
Bryan (Tampa Fl)
will rays win al east?
Amy Nelson (10:54 AM)
they have been limping along the last few weeks, but are still in first place. i think they'll be in it, not sure about the division.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
No doubt Prince is struggling, but is seems as though most everyone else (especially Hardy and Braun) are remaining consistent threats at the plate.
Aaron (va)
I think that the brewers are going to be a force to be reconed with for the next 5 years. prince fielder is just starting to bloom. he will explode within the next year or so
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
Nick, do you have a full time job? If you did what Farve did- do you think that your compay would take you back if they had already hired 2-3 people to REPLACE you, and they feel as though their potential is higher?
Chris (Philadelphia)
Prince Fielder is a dud not a stud. He had his one year of fame. He is an average player at best.
Amy Nelson (10:55 AM)
ok desmond, maybe i underestimated you because people are writing in about your proposal...
Mitch (Lima, Ohio
They had Cole Hamels. The first two games of the Cubs series has showed the Breweres weakness in the bull pen, and that they really aren't that good.
Jeremy (Tulsa,OK)
I don't know Adam i think Skip is right. I mean Brett has done so much for their franchise and only had one losing season. And when anyone looks in the record books they will see the Green Bay Packers next to his name. He is a hall of famer and should the Packers (as much as i love them) should give him the oppotunity to play.
Mike (NYC)
Zack, saying Jeter hasnt shown up in 8 years is blasphemy, how about the world series he took New York to In 01 or the multiple all star appearances since then, or how many consecutive years have the yankees made the post season with Jeter as captain?
Adam (ohio)
Before last year's miracle, Brett Favre had 4 dismal yeafs. But he is given a free pass. Let's not forget, this guy holds the record for INT's ever thrown. Madden calls any pass intercepted a bad pass, but then turns around and calls Favre a "gunslinger" who just loves the game.
justin (tampa florida)
bryan sorry but when it comes down to september, its yanks sox
Nazih (Youngstown, OH)
Ya actually in the case of Favre in the business world they probably would. If you made them money and were productive I'm sure they'd say hey lets get another year out of him.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Milwaukee has their eyes on the World Series, but it seems like now or never for them. They are bound to lose Sabathia, and will not likely re-sign Sheets, as Milwaukee is such a small market team that doesn't generate too much revenue. If we can lock up Fielder long term (as we did Braun), they will remain a playoff contender for years to come.
Kevin (ATL)
all star appearances means nothing now days, its a popularity contest, so that argument for Jeter is irrelevant
Christy (England)
Brett Favre has earned and deserve to go wherever he wants to play he is a proven Hall of Famer
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
The Brewers would be well served to watch the Rockies/Pirates game today. If Colorado gets swept, the Brewers should put a serious offer in for Fuentes. Their year is this one, because Sheets and CC will be in different colors by December.
John (Tampa)
If youre gonna try to use the argument he has the most INT's you need to remember he has the MOST Yards, TD's and Completions ever too
Chet (LA)
They Rays should go for this year and bring up David Price. Let him pitch from the pen to start, then replaced Sonnanstine in the rotation. Price will be an ace.
Amy Nelson (10:58 AM)
price will be up very soon. he'll workout of pen and he's going to inject immediate energy into that clubhouse
Adam (New York)
There's no rush on Price. Let him develop
Amy Nelson (10:58 AM)
he'll be up...
justin (tampa florida)
its all jay crawfords fault. i am a yankees fan and would have loved to see them get no hit
nick (milwaukee)
I'm not worried about the bullpen. They have actually not been all that bad. What is troubling is 3 for 48 with runners in scoring position.
rudi (NY)
and also, if your company doesn't want to hire you back, they don't have to, but they also don't have the right to keep you from getting a job somewhere else
bart starr (green bay)
farve should give it up already and go out on top. he isnt going to have a good year again. he is just lookin like a fool
matt oregon ohio
Make Greeny happy trade Favre for Chad + a 4th rnd pic. then even if Rodgers is a bust Green Bay has Pennington as a back up.
Rich (Laurel, Ms)
The braves trading Mark Teixeira was the biggest mistake they could ever make. A quality player that they could re-sign who wanted to be in Atlanta. Poor Judgement... Poor Judgement
Amy Nelson (11:00 AM)
he was not going to resign with atl. they coldnt afford him
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
CC is done in Milwaukee after this year. This season with the Brew Crew is him auditioning for that contract from Brian Cashman.
Aaron (va)
I was suprised to see all the dirt on penn state on outside the lines. I think that gets joe pa out of happy valley within the next year or two
John (Tampa)
Joba Chamberlain has nothing on David Price that guy will be a CY Young winner in the next few years
Nazih (Youngstown, OH)
If Favre doesn't have as good of a season this coming year it's his own fault. Let him make that decision not us or the organization. He will still be better than Aaron Rogers this coming year.
Jeremy (Tulsa,OK)
And i wouldnt't call last year a miracle..i would just call it a better year because he never plays to the point where his job is on the line.
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
Bringing Price up before September is a move for 2009, not 2008. The Rays are going to be even better next year.
Daniel Avalos (North Carolina)
look the only reason Favre wa00nts back is because Vinny Testaverde challenged him to be the oldest qb ever to win a game
Kev (NYC)
Making a Joba/Price comparison at this stage in their careers just proves that people from Tampa know nothing about baseball.
Amy Nelson (11:03 AM)
why? it's not like joba's been around long...
Amy Nelson (11:03 AM)
you truly don't know how a player will pan out until he gets here and performs. joba cuold have been a bust, but he isn't. we dont know yet with price, but i'm telling you, the organization is absolutey excited about him and his (pending) arrival.
John (Tampa)
Bringing up Price could help them in 2008 look at the Cubs with Jeff Samarja im pretty sure thats helping out the Cubs 2008 cause
Adam (New York)
It's just a shame Baldelli never worked out. Mitochrondrial disorder? This guy cant catch a break
Amy Nelson (11:04 AM)
sad, he's still in the minors. might be called up just dont know if he has the energy to sustain himself.
Dave (Jacksonville FL)
Joba hasnt proved anything yet!
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
Joba has the best arm in the big leagues for starters what are you talking about. Price has nasty stuff but isn't proven yet.
Mike (NYC)
is "your take" just for this hour on wednesdays?
Amy Nelson (11:05 AM)
10-12 pm every wednesday
Chris (Philadelphia)
Just because the Cubs had success with Samardzija doesn't prove anything about Price. Either he'll be great or it will be a reason as to why they lost.
chris (brooklyn)
should the mets make amove to get a starter like jarrod washburn and then move pedro to the bullpen since he can only give you 2 or 3 good innings a game, he could turn into the 7th and 8th inning guy
Amy Nelson (11:06 AM)
interseting theory, first time i've heard it...won't happen. but still intruiging..
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
God I miss Ted Turner.
scott (dallas)
I'm not saying anything but what has Joba done? Let's just wait, it hasn't been a year.
Aaron (va)
the braves have always let quality players leave, ie david justice, gary sheffield, greg maddux, tom glavine(why the got him back is unknown)rafeal furcal, Mark teixeira, the list goes on and on
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
Joba has Manny sitting every game they play the Sox so you tell me?
John (Tampa)
Not saying he'll definetely be succesful I was simply saying is he gets moved up it will be to help 2008 not 2009 just like the Cubs have done with Sarmaja
Adam (New York)
Succes with Samardzija? he's pitch in the big leagues twice. I think you're getting ahead of yourself
Amy Nelson (11:08 AM)
i think what he's saying, is that this has the POTENTIAL to be joba-esque ... both samardjiza and price have that potential. we'll see what they do in the long run...
John (Tampa)
All those Braves players you just listed got way overpaid to go to other teams
Mike (NYC)
If a 22 year old has success pitching at Yankee Stadium, he must be proving something. Its not exactly an easy
Amy Nelson (11:09 AM)
same goes for price and samardzija, pitching for a pennant is not easy. if they can do it successfully, then the teams will reap benefit and they'll be considered studs.
Bill (Philly)
Anyone think Manny will actually be dealt?
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
You're right Aaron, problem is, the Braves no longer have the talent pool (especially pitching) to make up for the loss of big name talent.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
How does it hurt to move the pitcher up this year and see what he does in a relief role? I dont see how that can hurt?
Daniel Avalos (North Carolina)
The Cubies will finally win the World Series. No team can stop them this year no matter how many trades are done to improve opposing teams.
Amy Nelson (11:10 AM)
ok...
Aaron (va)
they all had the years and ability to keep. the braves need to quit leaning on their farm system as hard as they do
Dave (Jacksonville FL)
the braves haven't spent any real money sence the 90's
Monty Singh (DC)
Joe Paterno has no right to be fired. He created the program and won consistently year after year. Remember a couple of seasons ago they were cheated out of an undefeated season when they lost to Michigan in the last seconds. He is what college football should be: Be effective on the field and off the field acadamically.
Aaron (va)
I was suprised to see all the dirt on penn state on outside the lines. I think that gets joe pa out of happy valley within the next year or two
Jeremy (Tulsa,OK)
Good Point Dave! I just hope they don't get stupid and let Chipper go....
Noah (Champaign)
Bob Howry spells demotion s-a-m-a-r-d-j-i-z-a
justin (tampa florida)
has david price pitched with a billion bugs in his face, in the playoffs.........
David (Topeka, KS)
I'm tired of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs. How about those Twins?
Kev (NYC)
A relievers ERA below 1, a starters ERA below 2.5 and all the scouts raving. Joba has delivered as much as possible for less than 1 year in the Majors and you cannot argue that for as young as he is. Sorry John (Tampa) probably didn't know the Rays existed until this year.
Aaron (va)
joe paterno has let his years get ahead of him. he needs to get out so he doesn't tarnish more than just his legacy
Kev (NYC)
Paterno is over the hill from a player development standpoint. At age 81, there's no way he has the energy to track his players and when PSU starting slipping in performance 10-12 years ago, they lowered their character calibers and therefore have a black eye from off-field arrest issues.
Mitch (Lima, Ohio
Just look at Price's numbers thus far in his first pro season, he's gonna be great.
Matt (Boston)
I don't knoe about skip playing in the nfl. But Stephen A. going head to head against favre would be a must watch.
Adam (New York)
He obviously should hand the reigns over to someone else, but with a man of his reputation, you can't just fire him. You just gotta hope he realizes when enough is enough (which was about 5 years ago).
John (Tampa)
Has Skip ever thrown a football?
justin (tampa florida)
Does skip ever take a day off? the guy is more reliable than brett favre making a descision on his future. maybe skip should go play football and let favre join the espn team. that would be a sight to see!
Amy Nelson (11:24 AM)
hmmm not sure if he's ever thrown a football...
Brad (Somerset, NJ)
I go to Penn State I believe that JoePa needs to go. He has done a great job as the head coach of the Nittany Lions, but as long as he is there trouble will keep brewing in Happy Valley.
david (norwalk ct)
not all great minor league numbres translate into the majors
Adam (New York)
Isn't he in Single A?
Amy Nelson (11:25 AM)
price is in double-a and has great numbers
Will (Tampa, FL)
Not sure if this story has gotten much pub, but it deserves some: CC Sabathia took out a full-page ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer thanking the team and its fans for their support during his time there. While it would have been nicer to see him re-sign with the team, it is nice to see that kind of appreciation from a professional athlete. The kid is a class act, and there are alot of Tribe fans who will be pulling for him and the Brewers for the remainder of this season.
Adam (New York)
Its just a shame that the Indians were so injury ridden. They have it even worse than Atlanta and could have been a major contender
Josh (Orrville, OH)
I know I will be pulling for CC and the Brew-Crew. CC was with the team since he was 18 and has shown the city of Cleveland a lot of love. Good Luck CC.
Brad (Minot North Dakota)
Yes they will appreciate him until he signs with the Yankees; just like when LeBron signs with the Knicks
Aaron (va)
I have to agree. I miss Ted Turner. Anyone who buys "americas team" (the braves) and immediately takes them off of tbs multiple weekly national telecasts obviously is lost.
ben (plattsburgh)
As a mets fan I was really upset to see the braves trade tex. I want a rivalry, I want great players on both sides and the last few years it has been sad to watch the braves just give up.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
If CC really cared about The Indians, the fans and the city he would have re-signed with them. Taking out a full page ad (which his handlers probably did) is a nice gesture, but he's still gone.
Amy Nelson (11:31 AM)
they couldnt come close to affording him. union would never let CC take 50-80 million less
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
CC was great for Cleveland while he was there. I was living there during the 2006 season and was impressed at how great all of the Indians were for the city. That is a classy organization with some great people involved.
Dave (Jacksonville FL)
I can't imagine a world without Manny on the Red Sox!
Serio (Memphis)
Amy, why doesn't Arizona show some confidence in Leinart by just naming him the starter?
Chris (Philadelphia)
Leinart needs to be the starter because Warner is too injury prone which would just end up as Leinart becoming the guy anyway.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
So Amy, you are saying that the Union controls who a player signs with? No one in their right mind is going to turn down 50-80 Mil of course, but say IF a player did want to take less money to stay with a club, what could the Union really do about it?
Amy Nelson (11:35 AM)
in theory, nothing, but the player will receive tremendous pressure. there are guys who definitely pass up bigger money, but not like what CC would have given up. cleveland wouldnt even come close to a sniff of what he'll get...
james louisville
i can imagine a world with manny in philly
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
Amy, how is it the player's union has such an impact on salaries that they force small market stars to go to big market teams? Seems like a long term problem if the union is wielding its influence that way.
Amy Nelson (11:36 AM)
that's why there's the revenue sharing now ...
Kanay (Orlando, FL)
I think braves will never gofurther in playoffs if they gone keep trading quality players next year they might trade chipper jones to lower payroll braves suck i feel bad for them.
mike (east LA)
CC, Manny, Texiera, A-Rod......its all about the benjamins hands down!
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
Manny acts like a kid amongst professionals, maybe thats his way of getting in the media since Big Papi is the man there now!
Jake (Syracuse)
Que Pasa Amy? Do you have faith in the Mets to win the NL East?
Amy Nelson (11:39 AM)
not sure. we'll see what happens with maine. they're in it, though...that's kind of obvious.
scott (dallas)
Many is a kid
Chris (Philadelphia)
Braves fans listen up. Mark Teixiera was putting up good numbers this season and the braves still stink. They are becoming more like the Marlins who deal good players like a Josh Beckett to take chances on prospects. Sometimes it work and sometimes it doesn't.
Randy (St. Paul)
The CC situation is a lot alike the Santana situation last year in where the very cheap Twins offered Santana 20 million a year and he turned it down, so he could get 22-25 million a year. And the great thing about it is, the Twins are better than the Mets!
Nate (Madison)
Manny keeps acting that way because the organization allows him to and never puts their foot down. Now he's done things so much that it's almost too late for a manager/organization to say anything and have it have any kind of effect.
Josh (Orrville, OH)
I work for a company that has a union and you wouldn't believe the pressure that gets put on us to side with them and thats just a small company. You're talking about millions and millions of doallrs with major sports.
Daniel Avalos (North Carolina)
The braves are like the old Clippers. A cheap owner who spends 0 dollars and has no interest in making a winning team.
Alonzo (Macon, Ga)
I guess the term "hometown discount" doesn't exist anymore. What good is revenue sharing when all of the impact players are being bought off by teams like the Yanks, Sox etc.
Amy Nelson (11:41 AM)
that's the debate.
Matt (Atl)
the Braves ARE NOT the Braves of the 90's...it started to turn when Turner sold them...amazing they still won those last few division titlles...
daniel (fayetteville)
yeah manny is being somewhat childish, but he is still one of the best hitters this generation..he does have a few errors a year but has a great glove to go along with that. what other american league left fielder is better at On-Base and average.
Bryan Fischer (Tampa, Florida)
who is your favorite for the discus competition at the olympics?
Dave (Jacksonville FL)
Good point Alonzo, no salary cap in mlb has alot to do with that
Andrew (Iowa City, IA)
Super agents like Boras don't let their clients take less than what they think is top dollar. Look at the mess he created with A-Rod last off season. I'm sure he already has a free agent book titled "Mark Teixiera - Mickey Mantle for the 21st century". Open your wallet Angels.
Nick (Cleveland)
The Rangers got two top notch prospects in Neftali Feliz and Elvis Andrus, a solid starting pitcher in Matt Harrison, and a good catcher in Saltalamacchia who might fetch another prospect himself. And yet the Braves got a first baseman worse than Adam LaRoche and a middling pitching prospect. I feel much better about the CC trade.
Joe O, Colonia, NJ
Who is Boras kidding with that "I don't know much about football" line? He's probably been trying to get his foot in the NFL door for years.
Amy Nelson (11:48 AM)
actually not at all. he wants nothing to do with any of the other sports. that's part of his pitch; he's a one-sport agent
Dave (Jacksonville FL)
One of the main reasons the Sox won it all last year is because of having to pitch around Big Papi AND Manny, it would be a major loss for the team if they give him up!
Matt (Atl)
why would Boras want to deal in any sport that has a salary-cap...wouldn't be a good business decision..
Drew Rosenhaus (Miami)
Scott Boras has nothing on me I am single handedly ruining the NFL and it's salary cap
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
very good...you guys are sharp today.
Adam Griffith (Tampa, FLorida)
What about the headaches Dave? Sometimes you have to let go... Manny helped them win 2 titles, but this is a business.
Bob(Lowell, Ma)
Actually, Mike Lowell left some money on the table last year when resigning with the Red Sox but the MLBPA frowns on players taking drastically less because that is what offers for/demands by other players is based on when they become free agents.
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
exactly. you can't leave double-digit millions
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
The bottom line is that Manny is an irreplacable talent. His off the field distractions do not erase his major contributions on the field.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
The sox would be better without Manny and their distractions---addition by subtraction---much like NYG taking out Tiki and Shockey
Joe O, Colonia, NJ
I can't imagine Manny on another team with no long or facial hair!
Christopher (San Antonio)
What about a Manny for Jimmy Rollins trade? The Red Sox have a need for shortstop, and I think both guys would be re-invented due to both teams still being involved in the pennant chase. Any thoughts?
Amy Nelson (11:53 AM)
that would never happen.
Amy Nelson (11:56 AM)
guys we have to wrap it up today. thanks all for writing in. see you n ext wednesday.
