Buzzmaster (12:01 PM)
Welcome to Christmas in July everyone! Here's to hoping your team gets what it needs today.
Buzzmaster (12:01 PM)
News just in, Griffey approves his trade to the White Sox.
Aaron (va)
is manny actually leaving? last word was that the deal was no where near being "finalized"
Buzzmaster (12:02 PM)
I think we've seen this act before, no? Manny complains. Red Sox make like they're going to trade him. Manny stays. Manny comes back and says he's ready to play.
Aaron (va)
my team already got rid of teixeira :(
Buzzmaster (12:02 PM)
That trade for Tex at last season's deadline turned out to be a total bust, huh? Check out Buster Olney's blog today for the full break down.
Manny Ramirez (Iraq)
What exploits do I pull when I am stuck in Boston at 4pm today?
Matt (Rofo, PA)
I think we all want to know about Manny and what the Red Sox would be getting back...
Jeremy Hermida (?)
Where do I end up? How do I do wherever I go for the rest of year? Thanks
Jordan: (Boston, MA)
Don't trade Manny!
Matt Philly
Read a few articles about the Phillies trying to get Roy Halladay. Any truth to this?
Buzzmaster (12:03 PM)
Didn't the Jays come out and say Halladay isn't going anywhere?
Dennis(Boston)
Can the RS just trade for an injection of energy? We don't really need the player.. just a shakeup
Nate (IL)
We on the Northside are crying at the Sox aquisition. We need another lefty bat, Edmonds isn't going to do crap sitting on the bench and being injured. Another lefty out of the pen would be great. Do you think the cubs need anything more?
Buzzmaster (12:04 PM)
Would Griffey have helped the Cubs anyway? Not sure he can play CF anymore, which is why I don't know where he's going to play for the White Sox.
Brett Favre (Kiln, MS)
TRADE ME!
Matt Philly
Think that was Burnett?
Buzzmaster (12:04 PM)
Maybe it was Burnett.
Doug (NY)
I think this time Manny's going. His statement that the Red Sox don't deserve him all but sealed his fate.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Buzz: How are you dealing with the deadline approaching? I have heard rumors about you going in a 3 station deal including Jay Leno and Spongebob Squarepants.
Buzzmaster (12:05 PM)
I just take it one day, one chat at a time. I'm just focused on doing my job. Everything else will take care of itself.
Jeff (Iowa)
Buzz, are you the expert analyst for this chat?
Buzzmaster (12:06 PM)
Heck no. I'm just keeping the seat warm for Jim Callis, Jonah Keri and Rob Neyer.
Mike (Scranton, PA)
I love how I'm asking actual questions that do not show up and have no chance of being answered, but the handfull of 15 year olds on here are getting their say in...
Buzzmaster (12:06 PM)
Me too.
David (FL)
How is the AL East gonna look at the end of today? Manny still batting clean up Rays with Jason Bay Yankees spending more money
jon (NJ)
Spongebob would b a great addition to ESPN Baseball coverage
miguel (brooklyn ny)
guys tell me what sence does it make for the whitesox acquiring griffey?
Buzzmaster (12:07 PM)
It will be interesting to see how they use him.
Steve (NJ)
I'm 3/4 of a man! I'm 30!
Sean (Florida)
Here's the trade I want, although it will have to happen in offseason. Red Sox trade Dice-K and his walk everyone in sight and be done after 5 act to the mariners along with Brandon Moss and Michael Bowden in exchange for Ibanez and Jeff Clement. Asian fans are happy to pair Dice-k with Johjima in Seattle, they get a young MLB ready OF in Moss, they get near MLB ready young starter in Bowden. Sox get OF to replace Manny (if Bay deal doesnt go down) and they get a replacement for Tek (thank god!). You heard it here first, spread it around!!
Buzzmaster (12:08 PM)
So, let me get this straight. You want to trade a pitcher that's 11-2 with a 3.04 ERA? Just wanted to check that.
Dave (Granby, MA)
Griffey has to be the DH. He can't play center any more.
Buzzmaster (12:09 PM)
What about Jim Thome? Put him back at first and bench Konerko? That's a possibility.
jon (NJ)
in all seriousness....i hope the marlins get manny. I would love to see the marlins win it all again and then trade everyone away in the offseason!
Matt (Boston)
Where is Griffey's role in Chicago? Thome is the DH, Konerko is the 1B, and their OF already consists of Dye, Swisher, and Quentin.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
That is a god awful trade. Raul Ibanez? Really?
steve (boston, ma)
BREAKING NEWS: it appears the Boston Red Sox and the Green Bay Packers have agreed to trade Brett FArve for Manny stright up as manny requested last nite, of course this deal is pending physicals and it is expected that Brett will join the Red Sox for their game tommarrow against the Okland A's
Buzzmaster (12:10 PM)
I'm waiting for that one. I think it's a good move on both sides.
Sean (Philly)
I think that Griffey is going to pitch.
Jerry Kimbrell of Cincinnati Ohio
Griffey can still play centerfield, he may be getting old but if the jobs needs to get done he will do it
Liz (Charlotte, NC)
Jerry Crasnick just said Griffey in Center and swisher at 1st while benching Konerko.. thats just crazy- the Defense will be so bad
Adam (Chicago)
Buzz, shame on you for not thanking the Lord. And contrary to previous reports, we on the northside aren't too rattled by the Griffey noise.
Sean (Florida)
left this part out...Sox then sign Sheets or CC to replace DiceK in the rotation with money saved from Manny and Tek being gone!
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
Why not keep DiceK and sign one or both of those guys anyway?
Chris (Austin, TX)
Are the Cardinals seriously shopping Lohse?
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
That's what it seems.
Sean (Philly)
Can Brett Favre do a 5 step drop to the mound before he pitches the ball? Or would that end up being a balk?
Roy Hobbs (New York)
White Sox could've signed me for less than they are paying Griffey. I still have a little pop left in the bat.
Isaac norfolk, va
I love that we (Seattle) got florida's #6 prospect for a 39 year old lefty middle relief guy...it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling!
Buzzmaster (12:12 PM)
Yeah, nicely done on that Arthur Rhodes trade.
Bob - PENNINGTON NJ
I hope Omar Minaya has something up his sleeve other than his arm. If Manny goes to the Marlins, the Mets will be the "fried" fish
Buzzmaster (12:12 PM)
Hasn't Minaya been after Manny for a couple of years now? How can the Mets not be involved if he's available. Though, I guess there isn't much the Mets could give in return.
Matt (FL)
I think the Griffey deal will lead to another deal for Chicago, one of the outfielders to go for a pitcher or two.
Dan (Chicago)
Per reports in Chicago, Griffey will play CF with Swisher moving to 1B and Thome/Konerko platooning at DH
Liz (Charlotte, NC)
Rumor Has it that CC is going to sign with a West coast team next year, he doesnt want to go to the Yanks or Sox, but we shall see when he is offered that $$$$$$$$$$
Gray (Chicago)
The Cubs have a slow, old LH bat in Jim Edmonds...but at least he can still play CF.
Jeff (Iowa)
The Cardinals must be thinking Wainwright and Carpenter will be all right in the rotation, with Izzy closing. Lohse has been their best pitcher.
Mark (IL)
the trade i want to see is Roberts stay in Baltimore and never see a Cubs uniform.
Tony (Minneapolis)
OK, so tell me I'm not crazy here. The Twins need a right-handed bat with some pop. Adrian Beltre should be available, he is gold-glove caliber, has pop, is right-handed, is a "team" guy, and is signed through next year! The Twins have shown the ability to produce pitchers throughout the years so I say let them pick between Blackburn, Slowey, Perkins and build a package around them to get Beltre here. This also opens a spot for Lirano (although Livan should be put in the 'pen). You have to give up something to get something, right?
Mike (Scranton)
Am I missing something? Is Manny going to help the Marlin's 27th ranked pitching staff?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Do the Marlins even have lockers big enough for Manny's head to fit into?
Buzzmaster (12:14 PM)
Well, they are building a new stadium. Maybe they can make the doors extra big.
Mike (Brooklyn)
I agree with everything Tony from Minny said, except that Livan should be banished to Siberia. He is the suck.
Paddy (St. Louis, MO)
Sounds like Maddux is already packed for L.A. I like the deal just having him as a knowledge base.
Marc(Geneva,IL)
Are the cubs shopping Scott Eyre? Jon Lieber
Buzzmaster (12:15 PM)
Scott Eyre. Haven't heard anything about Jon Lieber. He's hurt anyway.
Rickey Henderson (Timbuktu)
Rickey's still got game, and I'm a free agent!
Chuck (Monterey Park, CA)
Dodgers send Matt Kemp, Juan Pierre, a prospect and cash to the Reds for Adam Dunn. How does that grab you?
Buzzmaster (12:16 PM)
I'd take that in a second if I'm the Reds. But why would the Dodgers do it?
The Pulse (Bristol)
buzz i wouldn't give up a toaster streudle for you. felon
Buzzmaster (12:16 PM)
Jerk.
Matt (NY)
Who gets he better of a Manny for Favre deal...Packers or Sox?
Buzzmaster (12:17 PM)
I would say Red Sox. Because Brett is just a kid out there, slinging the ball around, having fun.*
Mike (Brooklyn)
Kemp is going to be a superstar. I wouldn't trade him for anything.
Aaron (va)
why would the cards put kyle lohse and his 12 wins on the market after carpenter had a (good) start against an empty braves lineup? are they overly confident in carpenter?
Michael (Washington DC)
To get some power
Ryan (Pittsburgh)
Buzz this 3-team trade that nets the Pirates prospects and a poor, poor, poor man's Jason Bay (Jeremy Hermida) makes me VERY nervous.
Buzzmaster (12:18 PM)
I would be, if I'm a Pirates fan. Unless you're getting some surefire prospects in return.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Well played Buzz. John Madden approves.
Kyle (SD)
Ed Wade is freaking horrible. Looks like he is determined to trade every decent young player in the Houston organization for washed up players in their late 30's.
Jeff (Iowa)
Hey, the Pirates suck with Bay. They can still suck without him.
Thomas (Livingston, NJ)
Will Chicago trade Orlando Cabrera? If so can Red Sox get him? Red Sox need a SS
Justin (Baltimore)
You should stop allowing these people to propose their own trades that they want made..they are so foolish that it's a waste of time reading them (that Dodgers/Reds trade idea is ridiculous)
Chris (CT)
Enough with the stupid Manny for Favre posts...that joke is tired. What's the latest buzz, Buzz?
Buzzmaster (12:20 PM)
Come on. That would be the biggest blockbuster in the history of sports. Totally unprecedented.
Michael (Hyde Park, NY)
Buzz, let's hear a surprise trade you think won't happen
Buzzmaster (12:21 PM)
Not really a trade, but my prediction is that we don't see as many deals as we think we're going to. It always seems like there's a lot of talk, but in the end not a ton of deals go down.
K (New Jersey)
as a yankees fan i am praying that manny gets traded. and as a baseball fan i am laughing at what the sawx will be without him.
Chris (Marlborogh, MA)
If the Red Sox deal Manny, then the Rays and Yankees will take over the AL EAst and the Red Sox will quickly fade away.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
If you can't laugh at idiots, who can you laugh at?
Pete (Marlyand)
I heard that ESPN is shopping Buzzmaster, and FOX may be willing to part with John Salley. Is there any truth to this rumor? I am not sure if FOX could ink Buzzmaster to a long term deal, especially since he is looking for hundreds of dollars a year.
Buzzmaster (12:23 PM)
I think Fox gets the better of that deal. I don't think ESPN's GM would fall for that. Though, they might be willing, just to get rid of the headache that Buzzmaster creates daily.
Jay (Indiana)
I think Boston is done with Manny and he will be traded today there are 3 teams to me that would bea good fit for Manny. first is the Marlins 2 the Dodgers and 3 the Mets
Chris (Marlborogh, MA)
Buzz, who gets the best out of the Ramirez-Bay deal?
Buzzmaster (12:23 PM)
Today? Whichever team gets Ramirez. Over the next 5 years? Maybe whoever gets Bay. Manny is getting to the end of his career, afterall.
Joey (Minneapolis)
Buzzmasters an idiot
Buzzmaster (12:24 PM)
There is that side of the equation as well.
Matt (DC)
Where is the Bonds talk??? Why are the Rays looking at Adam Dunn who makes a lot of money and not looking at Bonds who would play for 150k for the rest of the year and is WAY better??????
Rob (Lake George, New York)
mets need to make a move...Come on Omar and get'er done!
Buzzmaster (12:25 PM)
But the problem is, who do the Mets have that's under 35 years old that teams would want and the Mets are willing to trade?
Carl (NY)
There is no chance the Sox can make the playoffs WITH Manny. He has caused to much of a stir in the clubhouse and made it unbearable for Tito and his teammates. His mouth has written himself out of town and Scott Boras is playing the role of puppeteer.
Steve (NJ)
Am I the only one who doesn't think Bay is even in the same discussion as Manny? Why on earth would you do that trade? Manny's got to bring back, at least, an Uggla-like producer.
Jerry Kimbrell of Cincinnati Ohio
The Mets won't deal for manny even if they wanted to because they don't want to deal any prospects and the red sox wouldnt get anything in return. The dodgers definitely and the marlins need pitching not offense
Kevin (Syracuse, NY)
What are the odds the Cubs make another move? (Say Ibanez) And if there do make another move, what are they likely to give up?
Buzzmaster (12:26 PM)
Ibanez would be interesting. But I'm not sure that happens.
Jon (Philly)
Trading Manny is the equivalent of selling Ruth for 125,000 to make a stupid Broadway play.
Aaron (va)
manny still has at least 3-5 years left of all star level baseball. how can you say he is at the end?
Buzzmaster (12:28 PM)
Because he's 36 and hasn't played a full season in four years. I didn't say he's at the end, I said he's nearing the end.
Griffey Jr. (Heading to Chicago)
put me in coach, i'm ready to play today, look at me i could be centerfield.
Fred (Long Island)
Buzz you are very entertaining and intelligent, I have no beef with you. However, no Callis, Neyer, or Kerri yet... I thought the rule of thumb is that you wait 20 minutes for a professor in college are we suppose to wait longer for our experts? Are they having lunch together?
Buzzmaster (12:29 PM)
Thanks for the compliment. First ever in my life. Our schedule has Jim Callis coming at 1 p.m. ET, followed by Jonah and then Rob.
Charles (NY)
Manny is now the Tyson of baseball, great career but has lost his mind and is falling off real fast. Just wait for his facial tattoos
Buzzmaster (12:29 PM)
And bankruptcy. But instead of from spending all the money, it will be because he never cashed his paychecks and now all the checks are invalid from being too old.
Justin (Clearwater, FL)
I hope the Rays trade for Bay or Dunn!
Rich, Orlando
All this debate over a two month rent-a-hitter...Manny will drop whoever he goes to, including the Sox, at the end of the season. Getting Bay will at least guarantee a solid bat in the line up when the space cadet leaves. Papi-three, Lowell-four, Bay-five...works pretty well.
Daddio (CT)
Bottom line.....all this chat is nice, totally media driven, sox can't move manny because they will never replace his value for the last two months. Long term after the nonsense calms next week manny will be manny and red sox will be battling with the yanks for first
Pete (Marlyand)
BREAKING NEWS: Adam Eaton still stinks
Mitch (Cincinnati, OH)
Comparing Manny to Ruth is ridiculous. Ruth was a young, upcoming star with no ego issues at the time. Manny is getting older, probably has his best years behind him, and is a cancer to the franchise.
JP (NYC)
****BREAKING NEWS***** I just traded my PB&J sanwich with the crust cut-off for a Roastbeef, cheddar, russian dressing hero and chips to be named later. I ripped that guy off!
Buzzmaster (12:31 PM)
JP, that could earn you executive of the year.
Manny Rameriz (Patio)
buzz, you want this grill i'm selling? too big to move
Gray (Chicago)
Buzz, I have never been able to say this...the Cub are a perfect team right now. They don't need anyone else. Wow, that was weird.
Buzzmaster (12:31 PM)
I'd hold off on the perfect talk.
Jeff (Iowa)
Buzz, I wish you could try some of this leftover beef stroganoff. It is amazing!
Steve (PA)
It seems to me the the pittsburgh pirates will decide the al east winner....they already sent nady and marte there and now bay and grabow might get sent....
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
That's not true, Buzz. I compliment you all of the time. You believe that, right Buzz?
Abe Chicago
What is the deal with the Cubbies? They look like they don't really need to add a player after the key trade for Harden. Is their still time for them to get a left handed hitter off the bench??
Buzzmaster (12:32 PM)
Yes, they have 3:28 to make a deal. And are you Abe Froman?
Mitch (Rockford)
Gray....Perfect? Carlos Marmol? Perfect? Bob Howry? Perfect? BULLPEN HELP IS NEEDED!!!!
Chris (Baton Rouge, LA)
I think it's only fair that Griffey got traded. He's been losing with the Reds for so many years, now, in the final years of his career, he'll have a chance to win.
Andy (Toronto)
Manny near his end is still going to put up a .950 OPS. Yeah, I think I'll take a few of those guys, wouldn't you Buzz?
Buzzmaster (12:33 PM)
Only if I want to win some games.
marty toms river, nj
a fan on wfan made a good suggestion carlos beltran, eddie koonz and john neise for manny ramirez and jacoby ellsbury. sounds good to me!
Buzzmaster (12:33 PM)
I love WFAN fan calls. Why in the world would the Sox make that deal?
Kev (NYC)
The Sausage King of Chicago!
Mike NY
How about trading Mannny FOR the Florida Marlins? Money wise, it makes sense and Manny won't have anyone to piss off there and the Sox can pick who they want from the Marlins?
Buzzmaster (12:34 PM)
Now that's a trade that could actually happen. If the MLB had a salary cap, that's what it would take to match salaries.
Pete (Maryland)
Buzz, Would a text message from say one GM like Pat Gillick that says "would you trade me Roy Halladay and Alex Rios for Carlos Ruiz?" being answered by Ricciardi with "sure! lol. funny." constitute as a deal in MLB's eyes?
Buzzmaster (12:36 PM)
Good question. That's why if I were a GM, I'd have to try and not be sarcastic in any text messages.
Griffey Jr (Stuck on I-70)
Buzz, the traffic sucks here, can you get me the whambulance to move things along?
Mark (OH)
Why is it that everyone is so focused on the fact that Manny isn't running out groundballs, when a) Manny never runs out grounders, and b) he busted his butt to score from 2nd the first night after all this mess began. Manny has always had his own opinions about when the proper time to put forth an effort is, why is it that now people think it's a big deal?
Buzzmaster (12:38 PM)
I laugh when I hear Sox fans booing him for not running out a ground ball. He's never done it. Didn't do it in 2004 and 2007 when he was being cheered winning titles, but still not running out ground balls.
David (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Buzz, do you think too many teams are scared to trade prospects away to get deals done? How many so called "can't miss" prospects never make the Major Leagues?
Buzzmaster (12:39 PM)
True. There are so many factors involved - prospects, possibility of re-signing a player, etc. I think it's a lot harder than any of use will ever realize.
Ron (DC)
As he ran through the stop sign... but like you said... his own opinions.
luke (los angeles)
buzz, isn't it ironic that teams looking for power are ignoring Bonds?
Buzzmaster (12:40 PM)
Not sure if I would want Bonds on my team. Sure, he'll probably produce some, but the headache and baggage he brings would be a huge distraction.
Nate (Chicago)
Is Chicago style pizza better than NY's Buzzmaster?
Buzzmaster (12:40 PM)
Yes.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
It's not ironic, it's idiotic.
Scott (Indy)
It's not ironic luke. It's collusion. Just thought I would throw that out there.
Andrew (KC)
Barry bonds isn't worth the headaches, plus he hasn't seen live pitching in nearly a year. Oh, and he's over 40. I think people are kinda forgetting those details.
Tom (Chicago)
The problem with Chicago style pizza is that it just sits in your stomach. I prefer NY style personally.
Buzzmaster (12:42 PM)
Where does the NY pizza go? To your feet?
John Henry (Boston)
We just can't get fair value for Manny! They won't give up Uggla and Hanley.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Huh. He was over 40 last year when he OPS'd like .900.
Peter (Manchester)
Sox fanned booed Manny for not running out a ground ball because if he had he would have broken up a no hitter!! So your saying it is ok to be humiliated by the opposing team and pitcher in your own ballpark? That is the epitome of not caring.
Buzzmaster (12:44 PM)
And were you saying that in 2004 and 2007 when he was helping the team win World Series titles? He's been doing this his entire career.
The Chad ( Bratt, VT )
Ken Rosenthal reports the Manny Ramirez deal is very close to being done.
Buzzmaster (12:45 PM)
Everyone's reporting that the deal is very close.
Matt (IN)
As a Red Sox fani really wouldnt mind losing Manny for Bay. You lose 32 points of OPS but gain superior defense and a better clubhouse presence. Plus, Bay is under contract for 7.5 mil next season, will give draft picks in return when he becomes a free agent and Manny is old and isnt likely to top 35 homers .310 average like he used to.
Bob(Lowell, Ma)
This is like an extra hour of the MB....only with sports talk. Very interesting.
John (Bronx, New York)
as a yankee fan, i think that the yankees have done a great job so far with their aqcuisition of marte, nady, and pudge. I would like to see more washburn talk, but i dont think its going to happen...as a baseball fan, I think a 3-way deal between boston, pittsburgh and florida is the best scenerio for the manny situation
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Clubhouse presence is sooooo overrated. Damn, the best Giants team in the last 40 years had Jeff Kent and Barry Bonds in the clubhouse!
Jason (Nashville)
1. Trade Manny for a prospect or two 2. Sign Barry Bonds to play LF 3. Keep on trucking.
David (Miami Fl)
Marlins demanding 9million for taking Manny... really? Is Stanton that good of a prospect?
Scott (VA)
Olney is saying that the deal is almost *dead* because the Marlins want too much. i.e. More cash than Manny's remaining contract. Bummer for Marlins?
Buzzmaster (12:49 PM)
Blue Jays supposedly now coming after Bay. A real effort or the Pirates trying to jump up the asking price?
Mike (DC)
Buzz, if Manny gets traded by the deadline will you agree to get dreadlocks?
Buzzmaster (12:50 PM)
Sure. Why not.
CJ (A place you have never heard of before)
Both.. Asking price for other teams and for Jays by taking an offer
Chris (Baton Rouge, LA)
Why would the Red Sox sign Bonds? If they didn't like the way Manny was, how do you think it'll go with Bonds?
Corey (Philadelphia)
Hey if Manny to the fish is almost dead. Ill take him here in Philly.
Willie (Portland, OR)
I agree with Jason, Boston should sign Barry, that way if they don't win, management can just blame it on Barry, at a $19,650,000 discount.
Matt (Phoenix)
Send Bay to the Jays, let him get a taste of Molson again!
Zack (Boston)
On the trade deadline blog on espn it said any Manny trade would likely come down to the wire like the Nomar trade in 2004. It said things were so confusing the Twins never got a second prospect they thought they were owed. Anyone know who that prospect was supposed to be?
Aaron (Philly)
I will too
Sonny (Clermont, FL)
Rosenthal is saying the Cubs are considering Ibanez. I guess that would push Kosuke to Center and Edmonds and DeRosa to the bench...not sure if that's what they need.
Buzzmaster (12:53 PM)
Well, it would push DeRosa back to second, I would think.
Godish (Chicago)
The prospect was George Brett.
sumeet (nyc)
if im Omar Minaya, and theo is willing to take back Beltran and whatever else for Manny...I would do it in a heartbeat.
Steinbrenner(NYC)
Should I take the Marlins or the Rays?
Andy (Detroit, MI)
My team already got rid of Pudge :( and now our division rivals land Ken Griffey Junior. that just great! :(
Ben (Tempe, AZ)
Didn't that one minor leaguer get traded for 10 bats? I'll give 15 bats, 3 packs of big league chew, and a deflated soccer ball for Manny!
The Chad ( Bratt, VT )
I'd like to see Manny go to a team that gets minimal attention and coverage. after all, all he wants is attention.
Buzzmaster (12:58 PM)
OK folks. I am finished here. Thanks for stopping by. Next up we have Baseball America's Jim Callis, who definitely knows a lot more than I do. Enjoy the rest of the chat!
Jim Callis (12:59 PM)
Hi, everyone. Little did I know when I stopped chatting yesterday that I'd be back less than 24 hours later. Glad to be here . . . 2309 questions in the queue . . . let's get to it.
Josh Sox fan in NYC
This may be out of leftfield, (no pun intended,) but what about this trade idea to help their bullpen by improving their rotation. Sox send Bucholtz, Masterson and Lowrie to Toronto for the increasingly unhappy Halladay. Blue Jays get a potential future ace in Bucholtz, solid young starter in Masterson and a shortstop for the future in Lowrie. Sox are set with 3 starters (Beckett, Halladay and Lester) who go deep into games and usually only require 1-3 outs from the bullpen to get to Papelbon.
Jim Callis (1:01 PM)
That would be interesting, though if Halladay went on the market, the Jays might be able to get some players who already have established themselves in the majors. Interesting thought, though.
Sean (New Lenox, IL)
Griffey in center wouldn't be much worse than Swisher. I'll take a good lefty bat any day, especially considering what they traded away for him.
Jim Callis (1:02 PM)
I'm not sure Griffey is a good lefty bat anymore, but the White Sox did not like their CF options. They didn't have to give up much value at all to get him, so from that standpoint, the deal made sense.
mark (chicago)
With all the conflicting reports out there, all baseball journalists need to take a breath and try to not sacrifice accuracy for speed. They really aren't doing their jobs and appear to be mouthpiecess of various organizations. I know **** ******* has lost all credibility to me already.
Jim Callis (1:04 PM)
I deleted the writer's name . . . but yes, I agree with the point. There's such a rush to be first that accuracy gets sacrificed last night, and that's not good. I went to bed last night after reading that a Manny Ramirez deal was on Bud Selig's desk for approval, and that obviously wasn't the case.
JP (NYC)
Hold on one second.....who is the ***** reporter that Mark mentioned??? Come on you cant star that name out!
Jim Callis (1:05 PM)
Sure I can!
Chris (McDonough, GA)
Where do you think Ohman will end up and what could the Braves expect to get for him?
Jim Callis (1:05 PM)
Not sure where he'll end up, but I would expect the return to be comparable to what the Mariners got for Rhodes, a decent mid-level prospect.
Todd (Knoxville, TN)
Any word on what the Astros plan to do, if anything, before the deadline?
Jim Callis (1:07 PM)
It's not like they gave away the farm to get Randy Wolf or LaTroy Hawkins, but why the Astros aren't selling instead of mildly buying is beyond me. They should be planning for the future, but it's obvious they won't be doing that. They don't have a whole lot to deal, either, from a prospect standpoint, so they're probably done.
Ben (Omaha, NE)
Is Kenny Williams done for the day or is he going to surprise me again this afternoon with another move?
Jim Callis (1:08 PM)
You know, I wouldn't put anything past Kenny Williams. He's a fearless trader, and there has been a lot of speculation that he could deal Orlando Cabrera, move Alexei Ramirez to SS and get someone (Brian Roberts?) for 2B.
Mike (florida)
does anyone think the marlins and redsox are gonna get this deal done?
Jim Callis (1:10 PM)
They're saying on ESPN News right now that they think it's dying. The problem is that while Ramirez for Bay is pretty much a lateral move (when you factor in defense, running, effort, etc.), does it make sense for the Red Sox to give up a significant prospect to make it happen? I'm not sure it does. Sounds like the Marlins are trying to get some more cash and talent from Boston, so it's fading.
Steve (NY)
Jim, there has been some talk on Yankee boards about keeping Pudge next year as Posada insurance. I think it's nuts and we should take the two picks, but, if Posada shows he's done catching in '09, do we have ANY catchers who are close in the system?
Jim Callis (1:11 PM)
The Yankees don't have catchers who are close, and shoulder surgery on a very old catcher is a concern. So bringing Pudge back on a short-term deal could make sense. That was a nice trade for the Yankees. Pudge isn't the offensive threat he once was, but he's still a good defender and an upgrade over Molina.
Ben, Nashua NH
How can Gammons be saying that "A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7M to cover Ramirez's contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9M and two prospects for Jason Bay." while Buster Olney says that there is only a small chance that Manny will finish the year in Boston????
Jim Callis (1:11 PM)
That is what Peter just said, but I though Buster prefaced that by saying he was hearing it was dead, too.
Dave (Chicago)
So who do you see the Cubs looking to get? I know I heard rumors about Ibanez but that doesn't seem like a huge upgrade to be assuming Fukudome gets moved to CF. Johnson has been playing well and has really acted as a catalyst for that offense. So do you see them doing anything this deadline?
Jim Callis (1:12 PM)
I've heard all the same, but I agree with Dave . . . why weaken the defense? I don't think the Cubs will do anything major, if there's a way to pick up a decent arm, they might do that.
Chris (Boca Raton, Fl)
Hey Jim, you gotta cut that Buzz character off. I know it is never going to happen, but "why in the world would the Sox do that?" if offered Beltran, Koonz and Niese for Ramirez and Ellsbury? Really? I don't know why Buzz, how about an All-Star caliber CF, a good young pitching prospect and a 3rd prospect for a problem child that is gone at the end of the year and an average CF with less defense and power.
Jim Callis (1:13 PM)
I didn't see that comment, but I don't know if they'd want to give up Ellsbury in that deal. The Red Sox love Ellsbury, but they'd have to consider that.
Marc (Brooklyn, NY)
Anything going on with the Yankees and if they'll be getting help with the fifth starter spot instead of the woeful Sidney Ponson?
Jim Callis (1:14 PM)
There's a lot of speculation that after the M's traded Rhodes for something that had been on the table for weeks, they'll eventually deal Washburn to the Yankees after they can't find a better offer.
Jim Callis
I am the most handsome man here
Jim Callis (1:14 PM)
Am I really?
Christian (High Point, NC)
Hi Jim, do you see the Rays getting either Bay or Dunn today?
Jim Callis (1:16 PM)
I think they should try to make that happen. The Rays have a chance to make the playoffs after never getting close, and they should try to upgrade the outfield. I read that they may have deemed Reid Brignac untouchable. With Jason Bartlett in the majors and No. 1 overall draft pick Tim Beckham in the fold, I'd make Brignac touchable if it could improve my team significantly.
Anon (Rochester, NY)
Who would come ahead in the Manny-for-Favre deal?
Jim Callis (1:17 PM)
The Red Sox. I can't see Manny playing QB at all, while Favre could run around in LF. Hey, if someone wants to pay me to retire, I'll do it for one quarter of the $20 million the Packers are now offering Favre.
Jason (Joliet, IL)
Jim, A radio station in Chicago is reporting the Sox may be getting John Lannan from the Nats. What do you think of Lannan and would this be a good move? Thanks!
Jim Callis (1:20 PM)
Really? Lannan is decent, not a high ceiling but he's a low-cost, effective starting pitcher. Not sure why the Nats would want to trade him or what the Sox would give them to make it worth their while.
John (Boston, MA)
Would the Sox have to give GB money too?
Jim Callis (1:21 PM)
The Packers are offering Favre $20 million to retire, so I don't think the Red Sox would have to throw in any cash.
Lou (New Haven, CT)
So when can I expect the Washburn for mid level prospect news to be announced today?
Jim Callis (1:21 PM)
3:30 ET?
Dan ( New Jersey )
Jim, Is the prospect the Yankees got from the Astros any good?
Jim Callis (1:22 PM)
That's the Matt Cusick for LaTroy Hawkins trade . . . Cusick is a good contact hitter, but the rest of his game is below average. He's a decent guy but has a long way to go to become a big league regular.
Justin (Redlands, CA)
With all this Manny talk the Angels two consecutive sweeps over the Red Sox has gone somewhat unnoticed. How good are the Angels?
Jim Callis (1:23 PM)
The Angels are the best team in baseball right now, and the Mark Teixeira trade makes them stronger. They have to be the World Series favorites.
Ron (Pitts)
Where is Jason Bay going to end up?
Jim Callis (1:25 PM)
He might end up in Pittsburgh. He's not a free agent until after the 2009 season, so unless GM Neal Huntington gets what he wants for him, there's no reason to force a trade.
John (NF)
Dunn for Niemann and Brignac??
Jim Callis (1:25 PM)
If I'm the Rays, I do that.
Brian (Pittsburgh)
When teams trade off any decent players that they have does anyone ever think about the season ticket holders? My family pays for a full season of Pirate baseball and we only see half a season after they trade everyone off. How many years in a row can they start the rebuilding program, 5 year plan, or 3 year plan?
Jim Callis (1:26 PM)
I understand that pain. But Jason Bay probably isn't going to stick around after the 2009 season, and the Pirates aren't going to contend before then. Why not deal him for something that can help the team win down the line.
Donald (BR, LA)
Jimmy- Fuentes going to move?
Jim Callis (1:27 PM)
I think that's another one that comes down to simply whether the Rockies get enough to make it worth their while. No one is running away with the NL West, the Rockies are six back and they remember their late run last year.
BENNY: (FAIRFIELD,CA)
How plausible do you think it will be for LA Dodgers to land Manny in the offseason?
Jim Callis (1:28 PM)
Don't necessarily see them as the highest bidder. And Ramirez will go to the highest bidder, plain and simple.
Timothy (Seattle)
Chances at this point the Mariners move Raul Ibanez, Washburn, or Adrian Beltre prior to the 1pm PDT deadline? The rumors have swirled for weeks about these three.
Jim Callis (1:28 PM)
I think Washburn likely goes, good chance on Ibanez, less chance on Beltre.
JB (NYC)
To Brian in Pittsburgh: I realize it looks like the same song and dance, but the new front office actually has a clue of what they're doing here. If the propsed Bay deal(s) go through, you'll be a much happier season ticket holder in 2010.
Jim Callis (1:29 PM)
Thank you, J.B.
Steve (CA)
Any chance White Sox get a top-3 starter today?
Jim Callis (1:33 PM)
I doubt it. I don't think they have enough to offer from their system, and I don't see Orlando Cabrera bringing that back.
Brendan (Cincinnati)
While I understand it's much easier to trade players (relatively) before the non-waiver trade deadline...how come no on is talking about the possibility of trading Manny after THIS deadline passes? Do all the players involved in a post non-waiver trade have to clear waivers, or just the big dog?
Jim Callis (1:33 PM)
All of them.
Norwalk,Ct
If the Rockies do trade Fuentes, who do you feel would be the best pitcher (Buchholz or Corpas )to become the next closer?
Jim Callis (1:34 PM)
Corpas. Don't forget they have last year's first-round pick, Casey Weathers, as a future closer candidate, too.
Bobby, NY
Is it Washburn or bust for Cashman today? If Washburn doesn't work out do you think that Kennedy can come up and contribute down the stretch? His last 3 AAA starts have been very good.
Jim Callis (1:35 PM)
Sure. Kennedy wasn't good at the beginning of the year, but he also wasn't healthy. He could be just as good as Washburn. Why not get both, though? The Yankees aren't going to have to give up much for Washburn.
VK (DC)
Is there any case to be made for the O's to NOT trade Sherrill?
Jim Callis (1:35 PM)
Only if they don't like the offers. This represents a sell-high moment with Sherrill.
gil in queens new york
dodger fan here what are the dogers gonna do we need pitching a shortstop and a bat on the bench what are they gonna do ?
Jim Callis (1:36 PM)
The Dodgers might be the team that makes the move for Orlando Cabrera.
Greg ((New Jersey))
Which team do you think made the best push to the postseason this year with trades?
Jim Callis (1:36 PM)
I like the Angels making the big move with Teixeira. The Sabathia and Harden trades were great moves by the Brewers and Cubs. The Yankees are doing a very nice job of filling holes.
Scott (VA)
Jim: Stark is reporting the three-team Manny deal is all but dead. Do you still see him going somewhere, or will he finish out in Boston?
Jim Callis (1:37 PM)
Could easily see him finishing the year in Boston. All this talk of Manny pulling an Operation Shutdown, I just don't buy it--how is that going to help him when he hits the free agent market?
Xander (Philly)
Jim, i think you're forgetting that Manny is a certifiable nut case...he doesnt care what the consequences are...
Jim Callis (1:40 PM)
I believe his agent (Scott Boras) will remind him . . .
Joel (Grand Rapids, MI)
Conspiracy Theory: I think the Red Sox were wasting the Pirates time, so they couln't negotiate with the the Blue Jays and Devil Rays for a Jason Bay deal. Is this possible?
Jim Callis (1:41 PM)
I think they honestly wanted to rid themselves of Ramirez. ESPN is reporting that the Marlins are blaming the Pirates and the Pirates are blaming the Marlins, so I don't think the Red Sox were playing games here.
Brian (NYC)
Jim...do you see Manny actually clearing waivers? Whether its a block move or someone who actually needs him, the money isn't THAT much anymore. I bet he wouldn't clear. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees claimed him if he made it that far.
Jim Callis (1:43 PM)
I agree. I don't think he'd clear. If the Red Sox didn't pull him back, Manny would only cost you about $6 million for two months. A number of teams woud do that.
Mikey (Grand Forks)
"The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren't too happy with either of them." Who is really to blame here?
Jim Callis (1:43 PM)
"Blame" is probably the wrong word to use . . . If a team doesn't like what it's getting, it's allowed to walk away.
Jim Callis (1:45 PM)
Is anyone else getting bored with the lack of action? I know this happens every year, but we get all these rumors of deals that are supposed to be done or close, and all we have on deadline day is Arthur Rhodes for Gaby Hernnandez? Come on.
Mike (Littleton, MA)
If a guy doesn't clear waivers, does he go to the team that claimed him if the 2 teams can work out a deal?
Jim Callis (1:45 PM)
Yes.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Jim, as a big baseball fan, this is very important to me: Why would Jason Bay not stay with Pittsburgh after '09? If your answer is "money", then what makes you think the prospects Pittsburgh will get for Bay would stay in Pittsburgh once they become superstar themselves? It's a carousel.
Jim Callis (1:47 PM)
Sure, it's a carousel. But it's one more year of Bay vs. six years of whatever prospects you get. And the Pirates definitely aren't winning in 2009. I'm not saying give Bay away, and they can trade him in the offseason or at next year's deadline. But if they can get a nice package of young talent, they should do it.
johnathan philadelphia
burrell for manny
Jim Callis (1:47 PM)
I bet the Red Sox would do that.
Shawn (NYC)
you forgot about the Griffey deal...but yes, the lack of actual trades is a little boring...it is fun to see all the writers scramble to get the latest scoop and this manny thing has got all the drama of daytime soaps...
Jim Callis (1:48 PM)
You're right, I did . . . It's times like these I'm glad I'm a prospect maven and don't have to chase all these rumors. But the fan in me wants more action!
Todd (Fargo)
The Twins have to make a move now that Griffey is headed to Chitown...right?
Jim Callis (1:49 PM)
Not really. Griffey isn't going to make the White Sox significantly better. But they should make a move to plus some of the holes on their club, just not because the Sox have Griffey.
Bob (DC)
Shouldn't the Orioles trade Roberts. Its the same situation as Bay and the Pirates. No?
Jim Callis (1:49 PM)
Yes. But again, they can trade him in the offseason and at next year's deadline.
Stephen (East Greenbush, NY)
If this has been asked and answered I apologize . . . but can a player be put on waivers if he's a ten-and-five year man? Or would he then have to approve the team that picked him up?
Jim Callis (1:50 PM)
Yes, he can be put on waivers. He does not have to approve the team that claims him. However, if he's traded to the team that claims him, he would have to approve that.
Gregg (Kansas City)
Anyone else sick of Manny trade rumors every year?
Jim Callis (1:50 PM)
Count me in.
Austin (Spring Lake, NJ)
Jim, The N.L. East is a dead lock right now as is the N.L. West. Who do you see coming out on top of these divisions? Who is going to grab the wild card?
Jim Callis (1:51 PM)
Phillies in the East, Diamondbacks in the West, Brewers as the wild card. But everything is so close that a significant deal today could make the difference.
Mack (Mt Juliet,TN)
with the blue jays only 6 1/2 out of the wild card,do you see us adding a bat or two in hopes of curing our offensive woes in time to make a run?
Jim Callis (1:52 PM)
I think that would be a mistake. I know I mentioned that the Rockies were just six games out earlier, but old colleague Alan Schwarz once did a story that showed a five-game deficit this late in the season is huge. Not only would the Jays have to make up ground, but they'd also have to leapfrog at least two out of the Rays, Red Sox and Yankees. I don't think that's realistic.
Dark Knight
Can't the Marlins and Pirates just deal with each other and exchange Bay for Hermida (and maybe a prospect)?
Jim Callis (1:53 PM)
They could, yes, and that would make some sense.
Tea Lipton (nyc)
The trade rumors are created by you the media and you say your tired? 1 small leak and you all want first dibs on announcing BS. Icount you out callis
Jim Callis (1:54 PM)
I haven't fueled any trade rumors! So don't blame me.
chicago illinois
is the oakland a's looking to trade justin duchscherer?
Jim Callis (1:54 PM)
For the right return, sure. It's another sell-high situation.
Paul (Keene, NH)
I'm sitting here in a meeting... can you update me on the Manny talks?
Jim Callis (1:55 PM)
They appear to be dead, at least as part of a three-team deal with the Pirates and Marlins.
David Schuldies (E.T. WI)
You seriously think the Brewers are going to get a wild card ? Have you seen them play the last 5 games ? No chance at all.
Jim Callis (1:56 PM)
I still like the Brewers, though it has to be frustrating this week to be a Brewers fan.
Jim Callis (1:56 PM)
I still like the Brewers, though it has to be frustrating this week to be a Brewers fan.
James (Cal)
The Dodgers supposedly have a great farm system but never seem to trade any, who is in charge there Colletti or Logan White?
Jim Callis (1:56 PM)
Not sure that Frank McCourt wants to take on more salary, either. Other teams are confused as to exactly what is going on with the Dodgers.
Jon (Arlington TX)
Would you trade Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek for Saltalamacchia, Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus, Matt Harrison and Beau Jones? How sick do the Braves feel?
Jim Callis (1:57 PM)
Yeah, that one didn't work out real great for the Braves, though I do like Kotchman.
Matt
Only thing that makes me more sick than the Manny rumors each year is all the attention Brett Favre is getting.
Jim Callis (1:59 PM)
The latest on that is that the Packers will now consider dealing him within the division. Wow. I understand he's put the team in a tough spot and they want to move on, but they're a better team right now with him as their QB and not the Vikings'.
Pat (atl)
si.com says that Manny accepted the deal and it's almost done (updated at 1:38. how can reports be that conflicting?
Jim Callis (2:00 PM)
Approving a trade is one thing but having the teams work it out is another.
Jim Callis (2:00 PM)
Time for me to pass the baton to Jonah Keri. Jonah, I hope you get more actual trades to chat about than I did! Enjoy.
Jonah Keri (2:04 PM)
Thanks Jim! We shall see, two hours to go. Two programming notes before we get started: --To please my Page 2 masters, allow me to call your attention to the weeklong series we did at Page 2, making the case for the best sports years ever. I argued for 1961 here. On the right sidebar you'll find several other years. --I'll be on ESPNews The HotList at 4:10 pm ET with Keith Law and Jerry Crasnick, with lots more trade talk. OK, let's go!
john ohio
Do you think any of the contenders will make a run at Bonds or Lofton now that it's almost August?
Jonah Keri (2:06 PM)
That'd make a lot of sense, wouldn't it, John? I'm a strong advocate for signing Bonds, but OK, there are some other issues in play with him. But Lofton? Even if he reportedly wanted $2 or $3 million earlier in the year, two months means you're just on the hook for 1/3 of that. The guy can still get on base, run and catch the ball. At worst he becomes one of the best 4th OF in baseball--and frankly he could start for a couple contenders right now. He's a rich man's Endy Chavez, if you're the Mets.
Eric(Tyler,TX)
Are the astros still trying to make anymore trades? Any idea what they are doing down there?
Jonah Keri (2:08 PM)
Drayton McClane and Ed Wade are doing what any smart team 13 1/2 games out of first would do: Trading away prospects and blowing millions of dollars on mediocre pitchers. Maybe the Astros get a compensation pick for Randy Wolf. Other than that, no idea what they're thinking. That franchise is in bad shape.
Mike (Philadelphia)
What do you hear about my Phills? Still going after a left RP or maybe a bat? I heard whispers of Kyle Lohse...any truth?
Jonah Keri (2:10 PM)
I do expect 1-2 lefty relievers to be dealt by 4 pm. The thing is the Phillies have been one of the strongest (maybe the strongest) bullpen in MLB this year, with Durbin, Romero, Madson and Lidge all lights-out. They might make a deal just for insurance purposes, but it's not like they're hurting in the pen. And unless they get someone like A.J. Burnett, there's not much room to upgrade in the starting rotation anymore either. Lohse would qualify as an upgrade, but Cards GM John Mozeliak said there is "zero" chance they're trading him. For what that's worth, anyway.
manny(boston,ma)
i love boston and i love being a redsox this is all a promotional stunt to get attention away from the yankees and the rays im not going anywere 2 more years my fellow redsox fans see ya tonight at the game
Jonah Keri (2:15 PM)
Apparently the only person who knows the score is Manny himself. But you were off by a bit, Manny. Since all the Ramirez talk started, I've had two theories on why the Red Sox are floating his name out there and heating up the trade talks: 1) To placate the Boston media and leave Manny swinging in the wind. 2) To c***block the Rays from getting Jason Bay. Think about it. The Rays' biggest weakness is their offense, and they're specifically after a RH bat. With Holliday likely staying in Col, Bay is BY FAR the best option out there. So what do the Red Sox do? Engage the Pirates in three-way trade talk right up to the 4 pm trade deadline, keeping them occupied and making it nearly impossible for the Rays to (even try to) get Bay. Meanwhile Reds owner Bob Castellini is so wedded to Adam Dunn that the Rays may not get him either. Presto! The Red Sox have successfully prevented the 1st place team in the AL East from addressing their biggest need. Even if no one said this out loud, explicitly, this is the effect that the Manny talks are having...other than driving sales of premature T-shirts.
Ruiz (san francisco)
Is this Bay's peak value? What is the incentive for Pittsburgh to hold on to him at this point? Will there remain to be this much interest over the winter?
Jonah Keri (2:18 PM)
To get a read on Bay's value, just look at what just happened to the Braves with Teixeira. They dealt five players (including several upper-tier prospects) to get Tex last summer. Then a year later they turn around and get Kotchman and Marek--not a bad haul, but certainly a net loss. The longer the Pirates wait on Bay, the less value he'll have, especially with teams increasingly recognizing the risks involved with dealing premium prospects for rent-a-vets. I do think the Pirates are trying to trade Bay. I just think the Red Sox are making it difficult--for everyone.
Erik (Papillion, NE)
Should (not will) the White Sox trade Orlando Cabrera? I would've said yes and then move Ramierez to SS and promote Richar...but that's off the table. What would the Sox get in draft compensation if Cabrera walks after the season?
Jonah Keri (2:21 PM)
I'm not an expert on the Elias compensation system, but the White Sox would certainly get one high draft pick if OCab walks, even if they don't get the two that come with Type A compensation. Cabrera's still a solid player, and like you said, Richar is gone. The best fit would a deal for Brian Roberts, but I suspect the O's are asking a lot for him. Rightly so, by the way. Roberts has been one of the 10 most valuable position players in the AL this year. Teams like the Mets (especially the Mets!) and White Sox could really use him, but unless they're prepared to ante up, tough luck. Still, Brian Roberts could be more valuable than anyone if he were made available for trade right now.
JIM(Baton Rouge)
Is Paul Byrd going to get traded today?
Jonah Keri (2:22 PM)
He's a fringe pitcher at this point, Jim. He'd be a decent option at SP5 for the Yankees, but I wouldn't expect the Indians to get much more for Byrd than the Yankees did for LaTroy Hawkins.
Bud Selig
I just wanted to point out how much sense it made when we put 6 teams in the NL Central and 4 in the AL west. That just makes a ton of sense doesn't it? Totally fair to make the Central teams have to beat 5 to win and west to beat 3. Don't you think? Wonder why no one EVER brings this up.
Jonah Keri (2:23 PM)
Well, Bud, are you saying that you purposely shafted your old team? Because the Brewers seem to be suffering from this imbalance more than any other team. I still like them for the Wild Card, for what it's worth. Other than my disastrous Indians pick, I've still got a shot at nailing 7 of my 8 preseason playoff predictions. Blind squirrel finds a nut, apparently.
Matt (Chicago)
Do you see the cubs making a last minute move for some bullpen help, or do they stick with what they have and trust Samarzidja down the stretch?
Jonah Keri (2:25 PM)
I'm hearing that they're in the Will Ohman talks. Makes sense. He's a former Cub, he's pitching well this year, and Ohman's Harry Carey impression is tremendous.
Zayne (Baltimore)
are the orioles going to fill the shortstop postition if so with who and who do they give up????
Jonah Keri (2:26 PM)
I suspect this will happen in the off-season, Zayne. It's not like the O's need to upgrade right now, since they're not making the postseason. And they're not going to find an answer for the next half-decade at SS by trading Aubrey Huff or Kevin Millar.
Dustin (Hunter, ND)
Are the Twins going to make a move? They could use a RH power bat and a power reliever
Jonah Keri (2:30 PM)
Well, the best move they can make is also the easiest: Call up Liriano and send Livan to Siberia. It's comical how long management is dragging it out. Comical unless you're a Twins fan that realizes that if Liriano started last night instead of Livan, the Twins may have beaten the White Sox and moved into 1st place. I'd be really angry if I was a Minny supporter right about now. As for trades--any team that's irrational enough to stick with Livan this long shouldn't be assumed to be rational on the trade market. Of course they need a power bat, and of course their relief corps is weakened with newly converted vegan Pat Neshek out for the year. Whether they address those needs is up to cheapskate billionaire Carl Pohlad.
Jozo
Anything left for the Angels to do?
Jonah Keri (2:31 PM)
Let the Rally Monkey get a few at-bats in August, cruise to the AL West title by a landslide, and let the chips fall where they may in the playoffs. I'd much rather have Adam Dunn than Garret Anderson if I were them, but it's not going to happen.
brad
any chance the rangers will go after pitching?
Jonah Keri (2:33 PM)
The Rangers have 4 young catchers capable of starting in the big leagues for the next half-decade or more. They'd be a great trade match for any team seeking catching help. But I have a hunch that kind of trade (Taylor Teagarden for the Red Sox's Michael Bowden?) would be put on hold until the off-season.
Jonah Keri (2:35 PM)
By the way, our Trade Deadline blog is being ably staffed by Jayson Stark, Buster Olney and company as we speak, and has all the latest. I'd love to join them on the phones, but I'm stuck in a TV studio in Manchester, New Hampshire. Anyway, check out the blog for all the latest.
Ryan ,Minneapolis
The twins need to make a move to keep up with the White Sox
Jonah Keri (2:36 PM)
Agreed. Liriano first, a reliever second.
Andrew (Atlanta, GA)
do you see the braves making anymore moves?
Jonah Keri (2:37 PM)
I think Will Ohman will go somewhere. If the Braves can get someone to take Mark Kotsay, they will, but that seems less likely.
Jeff (Washington, DC)
Do you think the Royals are asking too much in return for the likes of Mahay and Bannister? If the Yankees are really offering Melky for Banny straight up, I think I'd take it.
Jonah Keri (2:38 PM)
I'd be shocked if the Yankees were offering Melky straight up and the Royals were turning it down. Most of what read during the silly season is either baseless speculation, someone wishing a trade to be true, or a GM testing the waters by leaking information. Some deals do happen. But if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Well, except for Pudge for Farnsworth, of course.
Brett (NZ)
Who loses playing time in Chicago with Griff's arrival? Konerko? Swisher?
Jonah Keri (2:39 PM)
Probably a little of both I suspect, Brett. Swisher seems more likely to pick up the pace being much younger and healthier. But I suspect Ozzie will mostly just ride the hot hand.
Ryan (Queens)
Jonah, the Mets seemed very shy of dealing Milledge (in addition to other prospects) last year for names like Manny. Then in the offseason we trade him for Schneider (good D no bat) and Church (great start but terrible injury). Does that make F-Mart or Jon Niese permanently untradable or are we going to make the same mistake we made with Milledge?
Jonah Keri (2:40 PM)
It's not necessarily a mistake to trade a prospect for current help. For instance, I'd trade Jon Niese for Brian Roberts if I'm Omar Minaya. But I wouldn't trade Martinez or Niese for Raul Ibanez.
Joe (Tampa, FL)
What is the latest you are hearing about the Yankees and Washburn, and the Rays and Dunn?
Jonah Keri (2:42 PM)
According to my sleuthy colleagues Messieurs Stark, Olney and company, Yankees are at an impasse on Washburn trade (though I think Washburn could pass through waivers and be dealt in August) and the Rays may be redoubling their efforts on Bay (with the Red Sox's block attempt fizzling out...I've got lots of conspiracy theories!).
Tony (chicago)
Jonah- did I hear right, Boston is offering Manny to the White Sox for Griffey?
Jonah Keri (2:42 PM)
Is Benny from the South Side your source?
Eriqua (Toronto)
Any chance the Blue Jays will trade Doc?
Jonah Keri (2:43 PM)
I doubt it, Eriqua. They wouldn't get full value for him. One gets a sense with the Jays that they're right back where they were a year ago: Wanting to stand pat for now, search for bats in the off-season, then try again to ride that pitching staff into the postseason--even sans Burnett.
Bret (Michigan)
Do you think that any big named starting pitchers like a Roy Oswalt might be moved from out of the blue? Tigers could use one.
Jonah Keri (2:45 PM)
The Astros are trading for the likes of Randy Wolf and LaTroy Hawkins. To move Oswalt you'd have to sneak into the Astros' offices, drug McClane and Wade, then hypnotize 29 other GMs into believing Oswalt is half as good as he used to be. I do think there's a slight chance a solid SP not named could be moved, though. If not now, then maybe in August.
State College, Pa
Are the Mets going to do anything???
Jonah Keri (2:46 PM)
I think they might be waiting on Ryan Church and trusting Tatis to keep hitting .450. If they go that route, they'll realize a week or two from now that this isn't a good idea, and look for an OF that's cleared waivers.
dan (chicago)
I don't understand why the white sox don't just move thome to first, griffey to dh, and keep swish in center. that keeps griffey out of the outfield and konerko out of the lineup. why is nobody mentioning this???
Jonah Keri (2:47 PM)
Swisher and Griffey are both below-average CF at this point. Thome at 1B instead of Swish weakens that position quite a bit defensively and also potentially risks injury to one of your best hitters (Thome).
Los Angeles, CA
Which shortstops and pitchers are out there for the Dodgers?
Jonah Keri (2:49 PM)
If I'm the A's I'm bombarding Ned Colletti's cell phone with offers of Street and Crosby for one or more of his premium prospects. Judging by how the team has handled LaRoche and overpaid for Blake (not to mention brilliant moves like the Pierre and Andruw Jones contracts), who knows how much they'd give up for Street and Crosby.
Fake John Mozeliak (St Louis)
Quit calling about Colby Rasmus! He's not going anywhere! Does anyone have a lefty relief you want to get rid of?
Jonah Keri (2:49 PM)
That's about as accurate a John Mozeliak impression as you're going to find. Seriously.
PaulW (Tampa)
If the Rays can't get Bay or Dunn, what other options do they have?
Jonah Keri (2:51 PM)
Hopefully not trusting the job to Baldelli, ugh. It's been very frustrating watching other teams upgrade while the Rays stand pat, given where they are in the standings, and how astute their off-season moves were (Matt Garza, wow!). I think they're making a concerted effort to get Dunn or Bay right now. There just aren't many (any?) other significant OF upgrades out there.
Jonah Keri (2:53 PM)
By the way, our Trade Deadline blog agrees with my "If the Yankees don't get Washburn now, big deal, they can have him next week when he passes through waivers" thesis. They have all the leverage here.
Dani WI
whatis going on with Taschner? Is he going anywhere?
Jonah Keri (2:54 PM)
That'd make sense, Dani. Taschner, Ohman, Guardado, Rhodes...lots of LOOGY names out there right now. Maybe teams are realizing that selling the farm for a guy who's going to throw 15 innings the rest of the season isn't such a great idea.
George P (New Haven)
I think the mets made a big mistake not trying to get Manny. If they were smart, they'd take the next 7 minutes doing everything they can to get him out in left field.
Jonah Keri (2:54 PM)
They have an hour and seven minutes, George (now an hour anix minutes). I just don't think the Red Sox were ever going to trade Manny, unless everything in the universe fell exactly their way.
Craig (PA)
It's being reported Dodgers are offering Ethier for Manny, but Red Sox are holding out for Kemp. Are either OF worth it for a rental?
Jonah Keri (2:56 PM)
I wouldn't make the Ethier deal if I'm the Red Sox. I wouldn't make the Kemp deal if I'm the Dodgers.
Omar Minaya
We are waiting until 3am to make an announcement.
Jonah Keri (2:56 PM)
Hillary Clinton awaits your call.
Tony (chicago)
Jonah- Following up, My source was actually ESPN 890 in Boston. Thats why I wanted to know if there was any truth to that Manny for Griffey rumor?
Jonah Keri (2:57 PM)
It would be an insanely stupid deal for the Red Sox, unless the White Sox threw in Danks, Quentin and a 1,000 pies from Gino's East.
Mike (Seattle)
Any chance that Ibanez or Guillen end up in Mets uniformn by the end of the day. Forget Manny, he would ruin the chemistry that Manuel has built since Willie's firing!
Jonah Keri (2:59 PM)
Interesting about Ibanez, Mike. Because Elias' free agent rating system is so royally screwed up, Ibanez will likely be a Type A free agent--his RBI matter, but his horrible defense, advancing age and other so-so to below-average skills aren't accounted for. So the Mariners should be looking for something *better* than two high compensation draft picks in exchange for Ibanez. Creates a situation where the Mets, or any other team thinking about Ibanez, would have to p way more than he's actually worth this season.
Evan (Marblehead, MA)
If Manny stays in Boston, is there anything they can do to make him happy? He is one heck of a bat to give up during the off-season. I mean, this guys makes $20,000,000 each year, to play BASEBALL; how bad could it possibly be?!
Jonah Keri (3:00 PM)
Of course there is. He wasn't going anywhere. He'll be back in the lineup next game, he'll hit like he always has, a few fans will boo him, and the Red Sox will make another run at a World Series. Then they'll decline to pick up his option at year's end and move on. This isn't complicated. Just the usual drama to keep us media types busy.
Owen (DC)
Why won't the Rays just find a way to get a deal done for Bay? Think about it. Iwamura-Upton-Crawford-Longoria-Pena-Bay-Hinske/Gomes-Navarro-Bartlett. Yikes. That's a good lineup, plus you go L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-R, making it hard for an opposing bullpen to play matchup baseball.
Jonah Keri (3:01 PM)
They're working on it, Owen. If they can get Bay for a package like Brignac/Niemann/X, I think they'll go for it. The hang-up may be teams requesting Davis or Hellickson instead. I doubt anyone would bother asking for David Price.
Mark (Bristol, CT)
1 hr to go.. Both Manny and Favre staying put.
Jonah Keri (3:03 PM)
Favre for Manny! DEs would have a hell of a time bringing Manny down, and Favre could sit on the bench and will the Red Sox to be great with his Favre-ry aura. Win-win.
corey (greensboro)
Why don't the Cards trade Loshe for prospects? The division is tough right now and they might have the best squad for next year. Loshe is gone anyway after this year.
Jonah Keri (3:04 PM)
They're tied for the Wild Card lead! The White Sox got roasted for the White Flag trade a decade ago, and they were 3.5 games out. If they were to trade Lohse (or another SP), you'd hope they could find an upgrade for this season.
Jon (Tulsa, OK)
You assume that a team will sign Ibanez early and give up those picks, though.
Jonah Keri (3:04 PM)
As long as Brian Sabean has a job, it's a lock.
Frank,Hamilton,Ohio
Any HOT Reds rumors at all, they have alot a trade bait with 13 potential free agents next year?
Jonah Keri (3:05 PM)
What, trading away one of the 25 best players of all time isn't enough for you? David Ross could probably help the Marlins. Dunn could help a lot of teams, but we've been saying that for years. Don't know that anyone else of note would go.
Jason (Chicago)
*** BREAKING NEWS *** The Chicago Cubs have just found their left handed outfielder everyone says they need - Jim Edmonds (2 of 2, solo shot & grand slam so far in Milwaukee).
Jonah Keri (3:06 PM)
Poor Brewers. They're getting a beatdown this week from the Cubbies. This is the best Cubs team I've ever seen.
Jonah Keri (3:07 PM)
A cynical person might say that by leaking trade rumors, a front office person on the rise would gain an ally in the media, who could then stump for said front office person to get a promotion to GM somewhere down the road.
Ryne Sandberg (Chicago, IL)
Best Cubs team you've ever seen? How old are you, twelve?
Jonah Keri (3:08 PM)
Sorry Ryno. As long as Rich Harden stays healthy, I'll take the '08 Cubbies over '89, '84 or any other year since the mid-70s.
Gray (Chicago)
Poor Brewers? Poor Brewers? They have been exposed. How about poor lifelong Cubs fans?
Jonah Keri (3:09 PM)
At least the Cubs make the playoffs. The Brewers have the second-longest streak of missing the postseason (26 years) of any team in the majors. I'd tell you who holds the current record, but then I'd start crying.
Dan
It's looking less and less likely that the Mets will do anything... I'm reading on SNY "In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes, ?As of 1 p.m., Met officials were growing seriously downcast about the possibility of making a trade today.?
Jonah Keri (3:11 PM)
I mean, that's pretty shocking considering how many holes this team has. To me it's much easier to upgrade a team that has a few superstars and a bunch of scrubs than it is for a team that's balanced at every position. The Angels needed a guy like Teixeira, because an Ibanez type wasn't really notably better than anyone else they had. On the other hand, the Yankees improved themselves a lot (without sacrificing elite prospects) by getting guys like Nady, Marte and Pudge to replace the stiffs they already had at those positions. The Mets as constituted look a lot more like the pre-trades Yankees than they do the Angels.
Joe Morgan, Oakland, CA
I haven't seen the Twins play this yaer so I can't comment but they have played well in the past so I think they can make a run at this thing...ooops, wrong room, sorry guys!
Jonah Keri (3:12 PM)
I wish I had Mose's comedic abilities. Could've really done something with that one.
New at this...
Who holds the current record for missing the postseason???
Jonah Keri (3:12 PM)
Expos/Nationals. 1981. Blue Monday. Sigh.
andrew
what are the chances the twins go out and get a guy at second or third?? punto is great defensively and actually is batting ok this year. but he is not the guy to be putting in the 2 hole in the order.
Jonah Keri (3:13 PM)
Agreed, but when have the Twins ever gone out and traded for an impact bat at the deadline. It's OK, though, I'm sure once the Twins get a new stadium, Carl Pohlad will suddenly go from being the guy who made his ffoforeclosing on family farms in the Midwest to spreading joy, cheer and cash throughout the world.
Bill (NY)
Bay to the Rays. Opens the door for Dunn to the Mets, right?
Jonah Keri (3:15 PM)
It would if it happens. Plus then I'd be three-for-three on my predictions made over the weekend: Teixeira to Angels Bay to Rays Dunn to Mets All three moves make too much sense not to happen. But we've got 45 minutes left and only one has.
Glen (NYC)
its being reported Bay was traded to the Rays for Brignac and Neimann
Jonah Keri (3:17 PM)
Trying to get confirmation on this. Hang on...
Jonah Keri (3:20 PM)
Well a lot of people seem to be saying it (tough to surf around and answer questions at once). Anyway, if it's true, way to go Rays. Excellent move, didn't give up any of the truly elite prospects, but still traded from depth and got the big bat they needed, one they can keep next year too. No shame for the Pirates either. Brignac has come a long way with the glove during his minor league career. I think he needs another year of seasoning on the farm. But he could be a solid contributor from 2010-2015. Niemann projects as a capable #4-5 type for the next six years, the first three coming very cheap, of course. Win-win. Nice one.
eric (ohio)
are the yankees ever going to get better starting pitching by next year
Jonah Keri (3:22 PM)
I think they'll get Washburn by Aug. 15.
James
Do you forsee Antonelli being traded due to his poor performance and why arent the Padres being active during the dealdine?
Jonah Keri (3:22 PM)
They don't have many guys who are attractive to other teams. They've been trying to deal Maddux, but Maddux tied their hands by blocking any deal that's not to the West Coast. They'll wait until at least the off-season on Antonelli and other prospects.
boyd(N.B.)
Anyone going after Gregg Zaun of the Blue Jays?
Jonah Keri (3:23 PM)
Marlins were rumored to be after him, though supposedly they wanted the Jays to pay his salary, which may be a sticking point. Gotta love Jeffrey Loria. Larry Beinfest might do more with less than any other GM in the business. Including Billy Beane.
Glen (NYC)
Brignac isn't ready yet, but do you think this has any impact on a Jack Wilson trade (dodgers?)
Jonah Keri (3:24 PM)
I think the Pirates want to trade Wilson but aren't getting attractive offers. If the Dodgers offered more, I'm sure they'd get him.
Ben (SF)
Are the Giants really standing pat?
Jonah Keri (3:25 PM)
Who do they have that other teams would want? I could see Taschner. Other than that? Randy Winn and the rest of the veterans don't really excite anyone.
Nella (South Bend, Indiana)
Can we PLEASE discuss Jorge Posada's future? Please?
Jonah Keri (3:25 PM)
Hopefully comes back to catch next year. The guy can still hit, but maybe not enough to man a premium offensive position like DH or 1B.
Joe: San Francisco, CA
Have the Rays ever made the playoffs? And if they do, can it be directly attributable to the removal of "Devil" from their name? Perhaps they should add Jesus Flores or Jesus Colome just to be sure.
Jonah Keri (3:27 PM)
I discussed this exact topic on Weekend America recently. Google some combination of John More, Jonah Keri and Devil Rays and you'll find it. Fun piece.
Blake (Seattle)
Yankee fan here, I'm thrilled about our Ivan Rodriguez trade, but wouldn't the loss of Farnsworth make our pitching rotation worse? Is it possible that the Yankees might give Jorge Posada a different role other then Cather?
Jonah Keri (3:29 PM)
The Yankees have one of the most underrated bullpens in the game. Edwar Ramirez has been great, Giese, Robertson and company have pitched well and Marte gives them a big lift in front of Rivera. If they make the playoffs they get the added benefit of lopping off their worst starters, which could shorten games and make them even more dangerous. The Yankees could be a sc team if they can find a way into the postseason.
Trevor (NY hiding in VA)
According to MLB.com, ?The Rays are going to acquire right-handed hitting outfielder Jason Bay for Minor League prospects including shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann.?
Jonah Keri (3:32 PM)
...and I'm going throw my friend Rob Neyer under the bus here and ask him to confirm this trade, because I was unable to do so before my time was up. Hoping all your favorite teams get what they want in the next 30 minutes. Rob, have at it.
Rob Neyer (3:34 PM)
Is this the best day of the summer? Or the best day of the YEAR?
John - Kansas City, in Kansas, but not KCK
Is it really possible for the first time in my life that the Royals aren't going to be a-wheeling and dealing at least 2 or 3 guys?
Rob Neyer (3:35 PM)
I hope not, John. If the Royals really can get a top prospect for Mahay, it'd be criminal if they don't.
Josh (Toronto)
Is JP seriously considering trading tangible future pieces for Ibanez? I realize he?s an upgrade over the Wilkerson/Mench/Stairs/Inglett sieve that we?d be throwing out there, but doesn?t he realize this team cannot win as constructed? Is he just trying to fatten up the win total to save his job?
Rob Neyer (3:37 PM)
Josh, I'm sort of shocked that the Jays apparently are going for it down the stretch. Granted, J.P. may be fighting for his job, but ultimately the owner has to sign off on any big deal. I do believe they've got a chance to make some noise, but it's obviously real tough when you're behind three good teams. And that's just in the East.
Jake (VA Beach)
MLB.com is confirming Breignac and Niemann for Bay - isn't that a bit much to give up?
Rob Neyer (3:38 PM)
It's quite a bit, but I do believe it's important for management to send a strong message that they're in this thing to win. I think we're going to see a lot of fannies in the stands in August and September, and it's hard to put a price on goodwill.
Ryan Cook (Tampa FL)
Breignac and Niemann aren't too much to trade. The Rays just drafted a shortstop with the first overall pick.
Rob Neyer (3:41 PM)
Right. And the Rays aren't exactly hurting for young pitchers, either.
Todd (Philly)
Not to be a pain, but I don't see that report on MLB.com...are people making things up? It would be nice if they knocked it off....
Rob Neyer (3:44 PM)
Funny, I can't find it, either. But I don't think people are making things up. Oh, why can't we just be patient and wait for another few minutes...
Jake is a liar
Rob, please tell people to stop posting salacious rumors. We want the truth!
Rob Neyer (3:46 PM)
Okay, the truth -- according to MLB.com 17 minutes ago -- is that the framework's in place but the teams haven't agreed on exactly which prospects would become Pirates. So I guess we can file this under TENTATIVE.
Troy
Stop all this Bay to the Rays talk! ESPNews just reported that both teams heavily deny its done and are still in talks.
Rob Neyer (3:47 PM)
Well, if News (as we call it) says it, it must be true.
Bill (Philly)
Does news usually trickle in late (after the deadline) or is it pretty much all reported by the end?
Rob Neyer (3:48 PM)
Usually stuff comes in for a bit after the deadline; I would expect we'll still be getting news when I'm out of here at 5 Eastern.
Nas(Atlanta, Georgia)
12 minutes left, expect any last-minute deals?
Rob Neyer (3:50 PM)
Wow, that deadline sure snuck up on me! Yeah, I think we'll have four or five more deals, at least, to talk about this afternoon.
Pete NY
How much will Pudge help the Yankees?
Rob Neyer (3:53 PM)
At this point in the season, unless you get lucky with a starting pitcher -- ex: Randy Johnson w/Astros in 1998 -- you're just hoping to gain one small edge. And getting Pudge into the lineup instead of Molina is a small edge, worth a game or maybe two over the next two months.
Greg (toronto)
Rob, if you became the GM of the Jays, would you blow this team up? It seems like the current direction of this team, they're destined to neither be legit playoff contenders or rebuilding. I just see them content to remain in the middle of the road.
Rob Neyer (3:54 PM)
Yeah, I probably would. You're right: Every year they're good enough to maybe win 85 games, but to what end? With the hope of lucking into 90 and maybe the Wild Card? I think if you're not building for 90 wins (and maybe lucking into 95) you might as well start over.
Dan Boston
Manny Deal unlikely??
Rob Neyer (3:55 PM)
Yeah, and always was.
Shaun (Atlanta)
Only on this day could there be a Will Ohman Watch. Isn't it beautiful?
Rob Neyer (3:58 PM)
Yeah, it is. Question: What percentage of baseball fans could tell you who Will Ohman pitches for? Anyway, he's supposedly staying put.
Kyle (Chicago)
Soriano goes deep and now the Cubs are about to win and go five games up on the Brew Crew.
Rob Neyer (4:00 PM)
Was watching. I don't believe in "statements" . . . except in the standings, and the Cubs are going to finish the day five games ahead of the Crew, and with a massively superior run differential.
Matteo
Don't you miss when the deadline used to be at 11:59 EST? Oh, the memories of waiting up late to hear who my Metsies traded for (Daryl Hamilton, anyone?)
Rob Neyer (4:01 PM)
I remember staying up all night to write about a Mike Piazza deal. Ah, good times...
Sam - NJ
Why won't the Mets make a deal for Dunn??? Who cares if people think he's "one-dimensional?" His price is lower than it's ever been, Tatis may or may not stay this hot, and Dunn would be a MAJOR upgrade over Marlon Anderson and Nick Evans. Plus, his OBP is sick! Am I wrong???
Rob Neyer (4:03 PM)
You're right, but the Mets don't have much to trade, and I also suspect that Dunn isn't Minaya's favorite sort of player.
Jim (Houston, TX)
Hey Rob, With the deadline passed, can you throw me a book recommendation for a vacation that starts tomorrow? I'll be on the beach, so fiction over non-fiction, please. Thanks!
Rob Neyer (4:05 PM)
Well, we're still going to hear about some deals. And I don't read a whole lot of fiction. But if you haven't read Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay", you should.
Doug (NY)
The Rays' pursuit of Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is off "unless a miracle happens," a source close to the negotiations told a rival site. Incredible. The site thinks the Manny talks may be back on. The trade deadline has technically official passed, but that doesn't mean much. By the time the rumors filter out, they're probably an hour or so old anyway.
Rob Neyer (4:06 PM)
I think Bay's going to get dealt somewhere. Manny, no.
Daniel (Anaheim, CA)
Rob, just got your last couple books ("Blunders" and "Legends") for my birthday, and they're both great so far! Now for the question: even with a relatively weak run differential, do the Angels jump to the top of the heap in terms of World Series favorites with Tex in the lineup?
Rob Neyer (4:07 PM)
Thanks, Daniel (and yes, flattery will sometimes get you everywhere). The Angels are certainly better than their run differential, but I would make them co-favorites with whoever wins the East.
Dan (Los Angeles, CA)
Awesome recommendation on the Chabon book! Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" is another great read.
Rob Neyer (4:08 PM)
Of course. That's actually the last novel I read. Brilliant.
Ryan Redding, CA
When does the deadline pass?
Rob Neyer (4:09 PM)
The deadline was 10 minutes ago, Ryan. But the deadline is for telling MLB, not the media. So I'm sure some deals went down that we just haven't heard about yet. So stay tuned!
Greg (So. Cal)
Come on Rob... Since we have no "real" trades to talk about so far this afternoon, can you honestly say Farnsworth was the best the Tigers could get for Pudge?
Rob Neyer (4:12 PM)
I was surprised, and if I'm the Tigers I'm looking for a prospect rather than a guy who's going to be a free agent in two months. But I think they were trying to balance contracts somewhat, plus maybe the Tigers are still sort of trying to win (though I don't see how this deal helps them do that).
Ray: (Cranston, RI)
Now that the Red Sox are going to have to deal with Manny, how do you think this will affect the rest of the season for Beantown?
Rob Neyer (4:13 PM)
It's only two months, and as long as the Sox are playing reasonably well, everybody will probably get along okay. But a five-game losing streak? Or a phantom injury? Yikes.
Tommy (Atlanta)
Personally after seeing Farnsworth cry it wouldnt surprise me to see him end up in pinstripes again next year. He loves girardi and vice versa, tigers may have given him away.
Rob Neyer (4:14 PM)
Yeah. The problem is that he's not really, you know, good. Not that that stopped the Yankees from signing LaTroy Hawkins last winter...
Scott (NJ)
Rob, I think the Mets made a mistake not going after an outfielder. It's risky to depend on Church to be healthy the rest of the year, and although Tatis has been solid we cant expect him to continue. I would have liked to see a big bat out there, Pedro was even pushing for Manny. Do you think the Mets made a mistake not making a move?
Rob Neyer (4:16 PM)
Well, I'd have to know exactly what move they *could* have made before excoriating them for not making one of them. But Church and Tatis in the corners? A thin reed from which to hang one's hopes, methinks.
Steve (Ky.)
I'm pretty shocked the demand for Dunn hasn't been higher, even for only getting him two months. Does he have to hit 100 home runs before someone wants him? If Howard was in his last year of a contract and his team out of contention, I'm pretty sure anyone would be thrilled to get him. And Dunn's numbers are really comparable.
Rob Neyer (4:18 PM)
I'm telling you, Dunn's the new Roy Cullenbine.
Ken (Columbia,MO)
Only 2 trades on the 31st? Is this some sort of a record? Or are there more to come we just haven't heard about yet.
Rob Neyer (4:18 PM)
Don't worry, Ken; more to come, I promise!
Ian (Oxford, MA)
If the Rays acquire Jason Bay, do you think they are the clear cut favorite to win the AL East?
Rob Neyer (4:21 PM)
Yeah, but supposedly that deal is dead. Anyway, I think the Rays are close to being clear-cut favorites anyway. If not in the East, then to reach the playoffs the other way.
Eric (Cleveland)
Rob, can the Indidans re-sign CC and Casey Blake after the season? We will get all our parts back in Hafner, Martinez, and Sizemore. With CC and Carmona we could be a legit threat no?
Rob Neyer (4:23 PM)
Sorry to break it to you, Eric, but the Indians won't waste even a minute calling CC's agent. He's gone and he's not coming back (at least not for a long time). But don't despair: the Indians actually have the pieces in place to compete for a division title soon, perhaps even next year.
Chris (LA, CA)
MLB.com is reporting that Bay may have been traded to the dodgers. If they traded Kemp, can we officially lable Colletti as "Sabean Lite"?
Rob Neyer (4:24 PM)
Shouldn't we hold on for a few minutes before passing judgment on Colletti or anyone else? Remember, just a few minutes ago we were assuming Bay was a Ray.
Marc (IN)
NESN is reporting a Manny deal is done.
Rob Neyer (4:24 PM)
Oh, yeah? Do tell!
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Sports Illustrated is reporting that Manny Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers. Can you confirm?
TJ (Washington, DC)
Rob- MLB.com is reporting Bay to the DODGERS
Rob Neyer (4:25 PM)
Great! The Dodgers are getting MannyB *and* J-Bay? I'm getting a great number of conflicting reports, will post questions on other subjects until we get some confirmation...
Luke
Rob, bigger surprise? Pudge to the Yanks or Griffey to the ChiSox? And which move makes the bigger impact?
Rob Neyer (4:27 PM)
Pudge to Yanks, as I had no idea the Tigers would even entertain an offer for him. Apparently he asked for a trade, though I haven't read anything first-hand about that yet.
Aaron (LA)
Are you surprised that the Brewers, seemingly, made no moves at the deadline?
Rob Neyer (4:29 PM)
Nah, they already made their big move, and also picked up Ray Durham. Why wait until the 31st?
Chris: (LA,CA)
SI.com, MLB.com, NESN, and WFAN, NY all report Manny to the Dodgers...but nobody knows for whom
Rob Neyer (4:34 PM)
And you guys were worried there wouldn't be a big deadline deal ... Here's what I can't figure out: Why doesn't anybody have details? Are our nation's baseball reporters taking the day off? (That's a JOKE. I know they're all burning up the bandwidth this afternoon...)
Pranto (Jugaville, Maine)
ESPN reports Gagne ejected for plunking Edmonds!
Rob Neyer (4:35 PM)
Ha. He didn't plunk him, but he threw three inside fastballs, then threw one *behind* Edmonds ... and Gagne had the gall to argue after getting tossed!
Will (Lincroft)
Is Jason Bay involved in the Manny deal? It seems like the Dodgers may have taken the Marlins place in the 3-way deal...
Rob Neyer (4:37 PM)
Everyone's saying Dodgers get Manny, Red Sox get Bay, Pirates get bushel of prospects. If so, it's a good deal for the Dodgers and Red Sox, have to wait for indentity of prospects to see how Bucs made out. Better than the Nady/Marte deal, I hope...
John (New Jersey)
If Manny IS a dodger, what impact will he make in the NL West?
Rob Neyer (4:41 PM)
Well, since we're speculating ... He'll feast on NL pitching, but struggle in Dodger Stadium's spacious garden. This gets Andruw Jones, or Juan Pierre, or both out of the lineup, which is a good thing.
Matt ( chicago, IL)
So they have said Andy LaRoche is goin' to the Buckoos? Any fantasy relevance, does he start there?
Rob Neyer (4:43 PM)
Yeah, probably. Though Jose Bautista is not a bad player.
Rick (DC)
ESPN has just confirmed the deal...Manny is a Dodger!
Rob Neyer (4:44 PM)
Oh. Good. I wonder ... Let's assume that Manny continues to be Manny ... How do you think the amount of ink will change when he's on the other coast?
Owen (DC)
From MLB.com: The Pirates will be announcing a trade shortly, as they are a part of a three-team trade that involves the Pirates, Dodgers and Red Sox. According to an industry source, Manny Ramirez has been dealt to the Dodgers. The Pirates are believed to have gotten Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen from Boston and Bryan Morris and Andy LaRoche, the brother of Pirates' Adam LaRoche, from Los Angeles. Boston is believed to have received Bay.
Rob Neyer (4:48 PM)
I don't consider these reports authoritative, though I've been seeing these same names mentioned everywhere. So let's assume for the moment they're the ones. I say this deal hinges, from the Pirates' perspective, on LaRoche. He's the only guy they're getting who has a big shot at becoming a star. The other guys are fine, but if LaRoche isn't an All-Star within three or four years, this doesn't work for the Bucs.

So Boston gives up Manny, Moss and Hansen to get Bay? Is that really worth it for this year and going forward?
Rob Neyer (4:52 PM)
Yeah, I think this is a fantastic deal for the Red Sox, as they've got Bay next season for $7.5 million. See, this is why they win ever year ... they're just smarter than everybody else.

So the Red Sox gave up Manny Ramirez, Brandon Moss, and Craig Hansen for Jason Bay. As a Red Sox fan, I wanted to get rid of Manny, but this is ridiculous.
Rob Neyer (4:53 PM)
Mike, neither Moss nor Hansen were a part of the Red Sox' long-term plans. Now, you may think they should have been. But they weren't, and thus were disposable.
Mike (Boston)
Neyer, how is that a good deal? They are picking up the final $$$ on Manny's contract too.
Rob Neyer (4:56 PM)
You think $7 million means anything to John Henry? After watching MannyB for the last few weeks? That's one of the luxuries of being a billionaire: You can spend your problems away.
Bryan (Crown Heights, NY)
Bay's stats are as good as Manny's this year, he is six years younger, better defensively, and signed to an exceptional contract. Sox fans should be celebrating.
Rob Neyer (4:56 PM)
Yes. Exactly. Thank you, Bryan. My only caveat is that Bay's been in a hitter's park in the lesser league. But he'll be fine.
Rob (Boston)
Wait...is JD Drew the highest paid player on the Sox now?
Rob Neyer (4:57 PM)
Indeed he is. Crazy, huh? Ortiz No. 2 at $12.5M this year.

When does this chat cease?
Rob Neyer (5:01 PM)
Right now, as no more announcements seem imminent and the Cubs are about to finish their first four-game road sweep since 2004 (H/T: Len Kasper). Until next time (i.e. next Tuesday) don't forget: "Men go shopping just as men go out fishing or hunting, to see how large a fish may be caught with the smallest hook."
