Chat with Dan Rafael
![]() |
Rafael will be stopping by to chat after the final bell sounds on a busy night in boxing. The big fight of the night airs on HBO when Joshua Clottey and Zab Judah battle in a 12-round bout for the vacant IBF welterweight title. Also a part of the fight card is: lightweights Anthony Peterson and Javier Jauregui; and featherweights Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia and Jose Hernandez.
So, watch the fights, then log on and Dan will be by Saturday around 11:30 p.m. ET to chat about those fights and any other boxing news you want to talk about.

Buzzmaster (3:24 PM)
Dan Rafael will be here Saturday night into Sunday morning, to discuss a busy night in boxing! Join him, boxing freaks, for Rafael After Dark, starting at 11:30 p.m. ET!
Dan Rafael (11:25 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks to our RAD chat! Good night of fights for us to discuss -- Clottey-Judah, Darchinyan-Kirilov, the replay of Margarito-Cotto. Also, make sure to check out today's new blog. Let's get to our late-night fun.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, Happy Saturday Night! What a joke to say that the cut was caused by a headbutt. What did you think of the fight????
Dan Rafael (11:26 PM)
I thought it was an excellent, tough fight. Based on the replays I saw, it seemed like it was a left uppercut that opened the cut. At least the right guy won it. Good fight.
josephrodrigue5163, San Antonio
Danno, a gutsy performance by Judah but...he still comes out short. I thought Clottey looked solid but not spectacular. Do you see a AM/Clottey rematch based on this fight?
Dan Rafael (11:26 PM)
Not sure if they will go for a rematch. But it is entirely possible. Top Rank promotes both guys and it's an easy fight to make and would probably be a good one like their first fight.
John (ATL GA)
RAD!!!! Lets get it on!
Dan Rafael (11:26 PM)
Settle down.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Berto vs Clottey I love that fight!
Dan Rafael (11:27 PM)
At this point, Clottey would walk him down in my opinion. Too strong, too good of a chin, too much experience.
John (ATL GA)
It was obviously an upper cut that caused the punch. Any chance this gets reversed in Toney-Rahman fashion?
Dan Rafael (11:27 PM)
No chance. Why would it? The right guy won.
Mannt (PA)
Dan-O. Clotty just made an interesting fight request if he doesnt get Margerito... Andre Berto. Don't get me wrong, I love Berto, but he's not ready for a guy like Clotty is he?
Dan Rafael (11:27 PM)
I love Berto too, but I agree with you.
Eric (NYC)
Just curious what you thought of the decision in the Bonsante fight last night
Dan Rafael (11:28 PM)
When you lay down and look dead, the ref is going to stop the fight. If he was OK and playing around, shame on Bonsante.
Kory (Missouri)
dan what did you think of kellerman laying the smackdown on Mayweather after the cotto/margarito replay?
Dan Rafael (11:28 PM)
I loved it. In fact, I loved it so much I actually sent him a text message telling him how much I loved it.
Andy (Seattle, WA)
I think I speak for a lot of freaks when I say that Clottey does nothing to excite me. He's a 147 pound Winky Wright without the resume to make him feel important.
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
I don't agree. He makes decent fights and deserves his position.
Aaron (Hartford)
Where did Paschal get those trunks.... good lord..
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
Pretty bad. He was NOT pretty in pink.
Tyler (Champaign, IL)
Da, do you think Zab really couldn't see or did lie to get the fight stopped hoping he was ahead on the scorecards?
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
I doubt Zab would leave in the judges' hands. I he got the number of fingers that the doc held up wrong, I believe it was because he couldn't see properly.
Bert (Chino, CA)
Dan, I'm still in a Euphoria from the Cotto-Margarito fight. My dad's birthday is coming up. What will it take to get a copy of the Sanchez-Gomez fight? Salvador Sanchez is his favorite of all time.
Dan Rafael (11:30 PM)
How much you paying?
Rico (Atlanta, GA)
Dan, Judah essentially quit in that fight. Her is an example of what is wrong with Boxing today. Judah has no chin and no heart.
Dan Rafael (11:30 PM)
I know it's early in the chat but you're a freakin' idiot and you are banned.
nate, denver
I've loaded up on beer and forgot any good questions....FREAKS RISE>>>>
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Dan I have to say it's been a tough week for me, my grandmother passed and we laid her to rest today. I love the fact that there is RAD chat tonight to take my mind off the events of the week. Thanks
Dan Rafael (11:31 PM)
Condolences from Freak Nation, but we'll try to have a good chat for you.
Matt (PA)
If no Clotty, who would be a good *worthwhile" fight for Berto?
Dan Rafael (11:31 PM)
I'd like to see Berto face a guy like Collazo. I am also fine with him facing Forbes in September.
Miguel (Texas)
Dan quit defending Zab Judah because you are afraid he will beat you up after you dogged his camp
Dan Rafael (11:31 PM)
Zab and I are cool. You don't know what you are talking about.
Banishment
Rico, thank you for my late-night snack. I was getting hungry.
Stephen (St. Louis)
Dan, we've spent a decent amount of time ripping HBO and Showtime for pumping up none-championship fights as such, that I'd like to give HBO a lot of credit for making it clear that last weeks fight was for THE Welterweight championship, and this was for a belt. Even then, they didn't really mention teh belt much tonight.
Dan Rafael (11:33 PM)
Agreed.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Dan Zab weighted 143 for this fight extremely light for fighting Clottey, even though he gave a good showing he still lost where does he go from here?
Dan Rafael (11:34 PM)
To the hospital for a whole lot of stitches in that cut.
Tommy(Detroit)
Zab looked good and I liked when he would put his combos together but Clottey looked untouched, I feel this makes the division that much more interesting with his win.
Dan Rafael (11:34 PM)
Clottey has a monster chin like Margarito does.
Joe (CA)
Last week, Margarito showed a great chin...this week, Clottey showed great body...Zab landed some big body shots, even in rounds he lost
Matt (PA)
What the hell is with people saying Judah quit? You can say he mailed it in during the Mayweather fight, but not this one! Hell I thought Zab fought his heart out tonight... he just wasn't the better fighter, that happens.
Dan Rafael (11:35 PM)
Anyone who says Zab quit is a total moron. Zab showed a lot of heart tonight and was really trying to win it all the way, as HBO's announcers properly pointed out. I think we just have some drunk/stupid freaks in here tonight.
Rich (Stamford CT)
Thanks for chatting tonight Dan. Do you think it's over for Zab or will he still be able to get decent fights?
Dan Rafael (11:38 PM)
Based on the way he fought, Zab will be able to get decent fights. But at some point he will have to win one. And I don't excpect him to come in as the A side or to be making the kind of money he made tonight (around $350,000).
Matt H (phx, az)
Early banishment! I love it! It seems that during RAD's...the banishments come quick.
Matt (PA)
Just like its not safe to drink and drive... its not safe to drink and chat! One leads to accidents, the other banishment!
josephrodrigue5163, San Antonio
D$$, I believe Cotto after that war with Margarito should take the rest of 08' off. Who would you match him with in early 09' if you were Top Rank's matchmaker?
Dan Rafael (11:40 PM)
I think Cotto probably will take of the rest of the year and come back around February or March. As for a comeback opponent, he could go after someone like Clottey or Collazo or start a little softer like a guy like Soto-Karass.
Stephen (St. Louis)
Dan, Zab weighed in at 143 yesterday. Could he reasonably lose the extra three pounds and drop down to Jr. Welterweight? I think he'd be a major force there if he could.
Dan Rafael (11:41 PM)
I doubt it. Those last three will hurt bad.
SCOTTY MASSACHUSETTS
hey dan if de la hoya-pacquiao does happen in vegas. shoudn't it happen at the unlv football stadium with mgm as sponsor? 45-50,000 potential big gate no?
Dan Rafael (11:41 PM)
It will be at the MGM Grand.
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
I think Clottey/Margarito II is the best welterweight fight out there. Who would you take?
Dan Rafael (11:42 PM)
Not really. It's fine, but it is not the best fight out there. I'd like to see Margarito face Mosley if he beats Mayorga. I have nothing against a Clottey rematch at all, but it is not the most exciting fight you can make in the division.
Matt(Mtl,QC)
Hey Dan could you give the official decision of Clottey-Judah please. We don't get HBO in Canada.
Dan Rafael (11:43 PM)
Clottey won a ninth-round technical decision.
Blake (Salem, OR)
D-Train.... I thought Cotto looked utterly defeated last week. Do you think that he could be less hungry as a fighter after a beating like that, or could it make him more motivated than ever?
Dan Rafael (11:44 PM)
It could go either way. I am not in his head and have no idea.
Frank (Chicago)
Does this result open the door for Paul Williams at all?
Dan Rafael (11:44 PM)
Open the door for what?
Kory (Missouri)
What about Clottey vs Paul Williams?
Dan Rafael (11:44 PM)
Certainly a good fight, but means very little economically.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
DTM! I have now seen the Cotto-Margarito fight twice and after careful examination, I think that Vasquez/Marquez III may still be considered fight of the year thus far. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (11:45 PM)
I agree.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Vic Darchinyan looked great against an outgunned Dimitri Kirolov tonight on Showtime. Do you think he could stand a chance against Mijares if they ever hooked up?
Dan Rafael (11:46 PM)
I think Mijares would make him look foolish and outbox him.
Joe Pep-Ct
Dan-I-Matic, thanks for the chat tonight. I'm on my iphone during this chat cause my Gf doesn't have the Internet. Freak status???
Dan Rafael (11:46 PM)
Not really. That is expected of you.
Blake (Salem, OR)
After seeing Jose Luis Castillo on Wednesday night, can we officially label him as a shot fighter? DO you think he will stick to his word and retire?
Dan Rafael (11:46 PM)
He was shot a couple of fights ago.
alex clearwater fl
margarito is a chump and if he goes to a rematch with cotto he's goin to get he;s behind beat and money mayweather scary dude scared to fight real champions he better stay in retirement he's best option
Dan Rafael (11:47 PM)
We try to speak English in these chats dude. Stop drinking and come back with a coherent question.
Aaron (Hartford)
Where you surprised to see Demers lose that decision in Montreal last night ?
Dan Rafael (11:47 PM)
Yes, but I thought the judges got it right. Close fight.
John (ATL GA)
How about Darchinyan? I was a little surpirsed that Kirilov just had nothing for him.
Dan Rafael (11:48 PM)
I was surprised too. I thought Kirilov would at least be able to take it deep by boxing him. He had nothing.
Dan Rafael (11:49 PM)
Sorry, Bat Text.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Dantastic, Max Kellerman really gave it to Floyd Mayweather tonight about ducking opponents to maintain his legacy and Bob Arum also gave it to him in your notebook about how he fought Baldomir instead of Margarito. Do you think Floyd stays retired after all of the verbal abuse he has taken in the last week?
Dan Rafael (11:52 PM)
I have said from the moment he retired that he will be back. Whether all the negativity prompts him to unretire I have no idea. Floyd is his own man. I agree with Max to the extent that if he retired because he just doesn't want to box anymore, that is OK. But if he retired because he thinks his legacy is sealed, he is wrong. There are worthy, serious challenges to take on at welterweight.
alex clearwater fl
okay is this english to you de la hoya is goin to beat the crap out of margarito
Dan Rafael (11:53 PM)
No he isn't because that fight isn't going to happen.
Wil (Toronto)
How did you have the Judah-Clottey fight scored at the stoppage?
Dan Rafael (11:53 PM)
I had Clottey up by a point.
Daniel K (Toronto,Ont)
Do you think now would be a good time for margarito to avenge his lose to daniel santos?
Dan Rafael (11:54 PM)
Interesting, but I don't see it happening right now. Santos, despite a big win, is basically off the radar in America, not to mention he's with King and those deals are tough.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Is there a reasonable chance of seeing Cotto-Judah 2?
Dan Rafael (11:54 PM)
I think down the road it would be possible.
Mike Durham, NC
I've been telling people about Joshua Clottey since stumbled upon one of his fights in 2005. At 31 do you think he has a shot at being considered the #1 welterweight in the world?
Dan Rafael (11:55 PM)
Not at the moment with guys like Margarito, Cotto and Williams all still ahead of him.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
If Zab is from Brooklyn and Clottey is from the Bronx, wouldn't it make more sense to have the fight at the Garden instead of in Vegas?
Dan Rafael (11:56 PM)
Way too expensive to do it there for a fight that wouldn't sell a lot of tickets. The place they had it in tonight only held about 2,000 people. And it's MUCH less expensive for a promoter to do a fight there than in NY.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
Clottey is really, really good, but he's just not the best, especially in this Golden Era of welters.
rick, nyc
Hi Dan- Dont you think Judah-Berto is the more intriguing match for a november HBO AFTER DARK show?
Dan Rafael (11:57 PM)
It is irrelevent because a) Berto is fighting Forbes and b) Judah's cut was really bad and he will be out for several months.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
What about the WaMu theater at the Garden? That holds about 2000.
Dan Rafael (11:57 PM)
It holds 5,000 and costs probably at least $150,000 to open the doors.
Gabe (NY)
I was thinking the same thing about Santos...have you seen the fights between him and Margarito? did you really have Margarito's #?
Dan Rafael (11:58 PM)
I saw both. The first was a first-round head butt no contest at welter. The rematch was at 154 and it was another head butt that resulted in a technical decision after about eight or nine rounds and Margarito lost a close decision that I personally thought he should have won.
rob (jersey)
Rafa - did the beatiful Mrs. Rafael enjoy a GREAT night of fights?
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
No, she is in New Jersey visiting her grandfather.
Aaron (Hartford)
Dan, my wife is sitting here with me making fun of me for chatting about boxing near midnight...but she did want me to ask you why Malignaggi makes that smug face all the time... she hates when he does that.. hahaha...
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
That's Paulie.
Gabe(Elgin, IL)
Who do you have winning the Taylor/Lacy fight?
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
Taylor's fight to lose.
lamont, bohemia, NEW YORK
whats stopping the williams vs margarito fight from happening.
Dan Rafael (12:00 AM)
I suggest you read my blog from the other day.
Jovian, Saipan MP
Hi again Mr. Rafael... so with Darchinyan, who I was worried may not make it through this fight, beat this guy... where does that put Nonito? Was that a lucky KO in your opinion? I would like to see Nonito do well, but his promoter, previously was not good about giving him work. So I'm really lost there...
Dan Rafael (12:01 AM)
Nonito beat Vic fair and square and is an outstanding fighter. Now Vic has moved up in weight and there are lots of good opponents in the division, not to mention that Donaire will eventually move up. Donaire recently signed with Top Rank, which has him slated to fight on Oct. 11 against his mandatory and then hopes to match him with Jorge Arce.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Danaconda, Cotto's mental toughness will be on display over the course of the next year after the fight last week. Jeff Lacy's mental toughness basically went down the toilet after Calzaghe pummeled him but Cotto seems like someone who may be able to come back strong.
Dan Rafael (12:01 AM)
We shall see.
Tommy(Detroit)
Hey Dan, whatcha got playing on your stereo?
Dan Rafael (12:02 AM)
Playing a little Fleetwood Mac.
Darin, MD
What do you think at this point in time will it take to lure Floyd out of retirement? What do you think he would do if Margarito pulled a Hatton and called him out?
Dan Rafael (12:03 AM)
You know what? I don't give a crap anymore. Floyd says he's retired. When he wants to fight again, he can let me know and then I will worry about it.
Berndawg
Forgive me if I sound stupid, but Paul Williams is having a press conference in LA on Tuesday to call out Margarito, a guy he already beat not that long ago.
Dan Rafael (12:04 AM)
That's because Williams needs Margarito to make a big payday.
Anthony (Youngstown, OH)
I am 10 sheets to the wind right now! But, I can't belive Clottey was actually beating Margarito in their fight!
Dan Rafael (12:05 AM)
He dominated about the first five rounds and then Margarito finally picked it up and Clottey hurt his hand (and later the other one). I was at the fight and it was a very good show (Cotto knocked out Quintana in the main event).
Matt (PA)
I think its about time to remind people that there's only one Ricky Hatton...
Dan Rafael (12:06 AM)
Excellent pont. There is only one Ricky Hatton.
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
The cut in the Dirrell fight tonight is one of the oddest that I have ever seen. Can you remember seeing anyone get cut in the middle of the forehead from a single punch before?
Dan Rafael (12:06 AM)
Not like that. When he turned around and the blood was gushing it was shocking. Gotta give him props for begging to continue despite being covered in his own blood.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Who is the front-runner to be Haye's opponent, and I'm disappointed the fight is not on HBO...
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
Still up in the air.
Pedro Denver, CO
Dan, it seems to me that a great deal of big fight are not made due to financial issues. I understand these guys want to make their $ but Manny vs Oscar makes no sense to me. He should fight Margarito, in my opinion, it would be huge for boxing fans. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
Financially the Pacquiao fight is bigger. Pretty simple.
NJ from the Cuse
Floyd who? Seriously I gotta tell you with the way 2008 has gone in boxing I havn't thought about him once this year. He was nice but there's tons of more exciting fights and fighters than him.
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
Bless you.
Oscar(coatesville,Pa)
Why Oscar De La Hoya will not fight Antonio Margarito as he promised, instead he wants to fight Manny Paquiao to prove that he is better than him.He would prove nothing cause we already know he will win.
Dan Rafael (12:08 AM)
I dont recall Oscar promising to fight Margarito.
KEVIN BIRMINGHAM,AL
I AM A YOUNG BOXING FANATIC. CAN I PLEASE GET A JOB?
Dan Rafael (12:08 AM)
McDonald's is hiring.
chad
what do u think if a paul williams an AM fight. I think it would be a slugfest!
Dan Rafael (12:08 AM)
Well the first one sure was good.
Matt (St. Louis, MO)
Dan, do you think that Cotto was overmatched against Margarito or just off that night? I really thought that Cotto was going to win and win easy.
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
A lot of people thought Cotto would win, including me (but not easily). He didn't win. It happens. Margarito fought relentlessly and broke him down. Not too much analysis needed on that one.
Burger King
Kevin, we are also hiring.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Dan: What did you think of Dirrell's performance, and what do you think of him going into the future?
Dan Rafael (12:10 AM)
He looked pretty good against a club fighter. When he fights a serious opponent let me know.
Tyler (Champaign,IL)
What is your opinion about the growing bad blood between Freddie Roach and Oscar De La Hoya? Genuine or promotion?
Dan Rafael (12:10 AM)
Maybe a little of both.
McDonalds, Birimingham, AL
Yes, we are looking for young boxing fanatics to hire. Know of any?
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
Agree or disagree,Williams is just a tough matchup for Margarito and Tony would be wise to take a couple other fights and cash in on his huge win before he fights Williams again.
Dan Rafael (12:11 AM)
I don't agree at all. Margarito knows what he did wrong with Williams -- give up like five rounds early on. A faster start and he can certainly win.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
Do you rate 2008 the best year for boxing since the odometer rolled over to 2000?
Dan Rafael (12:11 AM)
Not even close.
Taco Bell
Hey Kevin, we will start you at $9.00/hour.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, your thoughts on Margarito's pre-fight interview. It seems as though he's trying to lobby the public into pressuring De La Hoya to fight him. But he keeps on mentioning a "PROMISE" that was made. Can you tell us what promise he is referring to?
Dan Rafael (12:12 AM)
I have no idea. I think Antonio's head isn't clear after the Cotto fight.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, My houseguests just left after watching the Judah-Clottey fight and I have gotten all of them hooked on the sport after having them watch multiple boxing cards on HBO/Showtime these past couple of months. Downing cheap liquor also helps. Trying to convert these heathens one soul at a time.
Dan Rafael (12:13 AM)
You're a good freak.
Trevor (St Louis)
Hope this doesn't sound like a rookie question -- is there any difference between super welterweight and junior middle?
Dan Rafael (12:14 AM)
No, they are both 154 pounds but some organizations call it one and some call it the other. Just another stupid thing from sanctioning organizations.
Jason (Raleigh, NC)
Why does Winky Wright still not get fights? He is a slept-on boxer that can still give you solid rounds.
Dan Rafael (12:15 AM)
Who?
TC (Dallas)
I loved the Cotto Margarito fight. But can we really call this a Modern classic. I think the only thing that made this a classic in most people's mind is that Cotto was picked to win and was upset. Don't get me wrong, Loved the fight. But it's no Corrales/Castillo. That is a Modern classic.
Dan Rafael (12:15 AM)
It is a modern classic, just not at the very top of the scale.
Scott (Los Angeles, CA)
Did Dirrell hit that guy with an icepick?
Bronx, New York
Hey, Rafa, what do you say concerning Judah's cut, was it a head butt or a left upper cut? I saw the replay and I didn't see a head butt--help me put it to bed.
Dan Rafael (12:16 AM)
I believe it was a left uppercut.
Jay (miami,Fl)
who do you got winning the pavlik vs hopkins fight?
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
Not the fans.
Fletch (Pittsburgh, PA)
Yeah yeah, Floyd can be unexciting, by his fights with Ndou, Corrales, Chavez, Gatti and Burton were all exciting. However, I too am sick of all the talk. Floyd is retired, and as stated, I count at least 9 welterweights who are contenders or titleholders and are all talented.
Rick (Perinton, NY)
Dan, Buy or Sell: Paul Williams ends up fighting Joshua Clottey in a unification fight and Margarito's next fight is a rematch against Cotto.
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
Sell.
O'Neil Bell
Didn't you see me hit Dirrell's opponent with my hatchet in between rounds?
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, so my girlfriend has a career, a beautiful face and body, speaks Spanish (like me), and she loves to watch boxing with me (she thinks Clottey and Margarito would be a good fight). Do I pop the question or not????
Dan Rafael (12:19 AM)
What are you waiting for?
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Isn't it time for the Peterson brothers to step up the competition?
Dan Rafael (12:19 AM)
Patience my son.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
If I recall, you also hated on Taylor-Wright, just like you are now with Pavlik-Hopkins, and that turned out to be an excellent fight...
Dan Rafael (12:20 AM)
I never had issue with Taylor-Wright. You are probably thinking of Hopkins-Wright.
Colin (Cary, NC)
Dan, how many PPV buys are you expecting for Cotto-Margarito?
Dan Rafael (12:20 AM)
Free blog on the boxing page will answer your question.
Zach, MPLS
what up dan, what do you think of a juanma lopez vs jhonny gonzalez fight on the 10/18 undercard, top rank vs golden boy?
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
Good fight. Lopez is supposed to be on that card and Gonzalez would make a reasonable opponent. Good fight.
Preacher (Bell Gardens, CA)
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today among Freaks to Join Mario and....
Anthony (Youngstown, OH)
Danimal, The more I see Margarito, the more I like him. He seems to be a genuinely good dude and husband, as well as very accomodating with the boxing media. How have your experiences been with him and his team?
Dan Rafael (12:24 AM)
It's always been great. He's been a cool guy since the first time I met him and every time I have interviewed him.
Mike(Miami,FL)
Im not impressed.Dan,Clottey is a B-class fighter with good defense.Margarito would destroy him in rematch
Dan Rafael (12:25 AM)
You are entitled to your opinion.
530 ENE (Chico, California)
No wonder Josh Clottey broke both his hands against Margarito, he was hitting a steel dome. Does he want to do that again?
Fletch (Pittsburgh, PA)
By the way Dantasm, bless you for being "the Truth" about Pavlik v Hopkins. When you broke the news, I stared at my computer screen going 'Why' like I was Nancy Kerrigan.
Anthony (Youngstown, OH)
Mario, my girlfriend has a beautiful face and body, doesn't speak Italian (I do), and she doesn't watch boxing with me unless Kelly Pavlik is fighting. If you don't pop the question now, you should be banned for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jon (Philly)
No chance of Lopez vs. Concepcion?
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
Probably not on that October card, but down the road, sure.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, I'm seriously questioning Bob Arum's handling of Chavez Jr. I mean, a rematch with a no-name on PPV? I mean, when do I get to see the kid against a noteworthy opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
Why? He is handling Chavez Jr. MASTERFULLY. He's got a kid who really can't fight that much or who is still learning and they are making serious money.
Sean Richmond VA
What's Going On Dan, after watching Cotto/MArgarito again, I can't help but feel frustrated that Cotto never went to the body and his corner didn't advise him to..
Dan Rafael (12:29 AM)
We went over that in yesterday's chat in detail, but I agree.
Bert (Chino, CA)
It seems to me boxers are the best when it comes to fans. I've met many and they have always be approachable and really generous with their. Diego Corrales was my favorite. And to my surprise James Toney was a great guy to be around.
Dan Rafael (12:30 AM)
Like you said, most fighters are great to their fans.
Ospina (Dallas, TX)
I tell ya, I like Judah more and more every fight. He is ALWAYS in an entertaining fight.
Blake (Salem, OR)
D-$! Can we get a little RAD update on the Love Child?
Dan Rafael (12:30 AM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Aug. 13 on ESPN2 and then MAYBE Oct. 4 on HBO vs. Sergio Martinez.
Benvenuto (Miami)
Am I the only person who thinks Paulie beats Hatton??????
Dan Rafael (12:30 AM)
No, I have heard from many Freaks who believe he could outbox Hatton.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
DTM, I know you have not been high on James McGirt, Jr but does his performance last week on FNF change your opinion at all?
Dan Rafael (12:31 AM)
Not really. Joval was a spent fighter. Don't get me wrong -- solid win for McGirt Jr., but I still don't see him as a serious contender.
Ivan (NY)
Dan, Calderon or Cazares?
Dan Rafael (12:32 AM)
Calderon in another decision in a good fight. I am looking forward to that one.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
What did you think of the ShoBox card last night?
Dan Rafael (12:32 AM)
I thought Teron looked very good against a stiff. The main event did nothing for me. It went exactly as I thought it would. But good win for Ishe, who needed it really badly.
HBO West
I am now showing Cotto vs Margarito
Rich (Stamford CT)
At this point is there any chance Oscar vs Manny doesn't happen?
Dan Rafael (12:33 AM)
Sure. The deal ain't done yet. Arum and Schaefer will meet Wednesday and try to make a deal. But anything can happen.
Marty (Cincy)
Oh, young and in love. I remember the first time I knew my wife was a keeper. She was screaming for Roy Jones Jr. To "Knock Ruiz the **** out", and Jay Nady was still giving directionbs!
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
Did I see right that David Tua is fighting Chris Arreola?
Dan Rafael (12:34 AM)
No, he is not. They have tried to make it, but they can't agree on the cash. Maybe next year.
Sean Richmond VA
Dan, in your gut if the Manny deal falls apart who is Plan B?
Dan Rafael (12:35 AM)
If Oscar and Manny don't fight they COULD look at Margarito. They could continue to try to lure F**** out of retirement.
Jason (Seattle)
What's with Hatton firing Billy Graham? Who is going to train Hatton?
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
The guy who has been his assistant for years. His name escapes me at the moment.
Zach MPLS
dan, was last nite a bump in the road fot barthelemy or is going to have alot of trouble adapting to the pro game?
Dan Rafael (12:37 AM)
I just don't think he's really going anywhere. He lost to a really weak opponent and absolutely no power at all. Who wants to see him?
Axl (Philadelphia)
Have you ever seen Mike "Machine Gun" Jones from Philadelphaia fight? There is a lot of buzz around the Philadelphia area that he is something special.
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
I have seen him. He'll be on Telefutura coming up. He's a good prospect who promoter Russell Peltz is bringing along.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Only person more than Favre I'm tired of hearing about is F**** and his retirement!
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Who is your number 1 Olympian to keep an eye on?
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Probably Demetrius Andrade and maybe Gary Russell Jr.
Cory (Dallas TX)
Dan, I wore a Cotto shirt in a house full of Mexicans on fight night, FREAK status?
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Not really. More like Death Wish status.
Berndawg
Can I tip the freaks to the Julio Gonzalez/Tavoris Cloud potential 175 lb. war next Friday on ESPN2? Thanks
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Consider the Freaks tipped.
Sean Richmond VA
I got a chance to see Danny Jacobs last week on FNF. I wantg to see him again, he's a good looking prospect
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
He is an excellent prospect. Golden Boy is keeping him on a very busy schedule of fighting basically once per month for the time being.
Nicole Scherzinger
Hello Big Sexy! Did you get my text earlier?
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
Musta missed it.
rob (jersey)
So RAFA - what does bring F**** out of retirement?
Dan Rafael (12:40 AM)
The Packers trading him.
Elvis (Evanston, IL)
I knew my girlfriend was a keeper when she was screaming for blood louder than me when we sat ringside at a Telemundo event in Cicero, IL. And then went and bought nachos and beers between fights.
Sean Richmond VA
Props to ESPNews. Just showed Clottey-Judah highlights
Jon (Philly)
Is it just me or does that JMM vs. Casamayor card look pretty boring so far?
Dan Rafael (12:42 AM)
It's not you.
Dan Rafael (12:42 AM)
That said, I would like to see what the other two TV fights are going to be before I say for sure.
Jason (Seattle)
"The Packers trading him." Holy crap that was funny.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Linares and Agbeko need some fights... and soon!
Dan Rafael (12:43 AM)
Tell me about it.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
How come no one has tried to start a boxing channel? Is it much more of a niche than tennis or golf?
Dan Rafael (12:43 AM)
It's been discussed but has just not gone anywhere.
AP (Baton Rouge, La)
Are you going to update the rankings every Monday or once a month?
Dan Rafael (12:45 AM)
They are updated weekly and have been for months.
Zab Judah (Vegas)
What happened to my eye? I feel like I got hit by a shower door or something.
Q (NYC)
You really think Mosley could give Margarito trouble? Mosley has problems with physically bigger oppenents like Winky & Forrest, not to mention Shane is older now.
Dan Rafael (12:46 AM)
Yes, he definitely gives him trouble.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
My girlfriend is here next to me, and she wants to say thanks to you and the freaks for your comments. I want to say thank you too. She is a keeper, and I won't be letting her go anywhere.
Dan Rafael (12:47 AM)
Dude, propose on the chat!!!!!!!!
Fletch (Pittsburgh, PA)
By the way, that F**** v Gatti fight is the ONLY time I've ever seen 'What I say you must obey' ever have any shred of controversey. Good blog btw. I'd throw Smoger on the short list, just because of how many wars he's watched over.
Dan Rafael (12:47 AM)
I don't know what you are talking about because Kenny Bayless did not ref F**** vs. Gatti.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
I'll drink to Mario!
Portland,OR.
so dan where do you put AM after that huge victory on tht p4p list?
Dan Rafael (12:48 AM)
You'll see when the new list comes out later this month.
Benvenuto (Miami)
If Mario proposes on the chat he is legendary freak status.....and I think that makes Dan an honorary "Best Man".
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, follow up to Q's question. Exactly HOW does Mosley give Margarito trouble in a fight, and tell us what your early prediction would be please?
Dan Rafael (12:50 AM)
I'm not saying he wins, but Shane is a great boxer, has great speed (still) and has a tremendous chin. Trust me. He would give Margarito trouble. I take nothing away from Margarito's win over Cotto, but he is not invincible.
Benvenuto (Miami)
If Mario proposes on the chat where does that put him on the P4P Freak Rankings?
Dan Rafael (12:50 AM)
No. 1, hands down. When you pick Baldomir over Judah AND you propose on an RAD chat, you're No. 1.
Preacher (Bell Gardens, CA)
I am fully prepared to do an online ceremony between Mario and his FREAK girlfriend.
Zach, MPLS
with more than $100 in boxing ppv's in oct, on an already outragous cable bill i think i need a second job to support my boxing addiction!
Eddie G (THE PG ILLINOIS)
Danimal just wanted to point out an error in your blog about the Vic-Kirilov Fight... You said that the Nonito KO happened in December. Wasn't it July 7th of last year? Just a freak looking out for the King Freak!!!
Dan Rafael (12:51 AM)
That was edited in on the desk and has been corrected.
David (Bronx, New York)
Come on Rafa! Give us Puerto Ricans something to smile about after a week of mourning. Margarito vs. Trinidad/154 lbs. Now thats a fight!
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
Ain't happening. Keep dreaming.
Berndawg
Let's go Mario, take a knee.
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
Take a knee to propose, not the way Cotto took a knee.
Mario's Girlfriend (Bell Gardens, CA)
Do it Mario!!!!
Victor (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Mario, You have a hot babe and she loves boxing. I thought I was the only one who was that lucky. PROPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!! I Did
Rich (Stamford CT)
All these freaks with girlfriends who are into boxing are lucky...I had to break up with a girl who wanted me to miss Margarito-Cotto to go to her friends wedding instead.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Wow, I'm feeling more pressure than Cotto did last week. I will ask her when the time is right, I promise! I love her.
Mitch Abrahamson, The Rotten Apple
On what grounds can Paulie keep Hatton from getting inside?
Dan Rafael (12:54 AM)
A whole lot of lateral movement and a stiff jab.
Nick (Charleston, SC)
Since someone should propose... Mario's girlfriend, will you marry me?
Kevin: (Rialto, CA)
Hey Danny, whats with hbo and showtime doing fights on the same day again. when there is pretty much no other fight going on in august =[ a lot of boring saturdays this month...
Dan Rafael (12:56 AM)
Get a DVR dude. I'm over that crap. And anyway -- the Showtime card was over by the time the live HBO fight started. I watched the whole Showtime telecast and was able to flip over and see the entire Clottey-Judah fight.
Anthony (Youngstown, OH)
Dan, although the presser is Tuesday in NYC and the Ill a delph, Is Pavlik-Hopkins signed yet? Is there any $$$$$ issues?
Dan Rafael (12:56 AM)
Dude the fight is done. When they have press conferences the fight is on.
Berndawg
The time is ever better than being in a RAD??? C'mon Mario. You can get married in the ring on 12/6 before Manny and Oscar enter.
Jon (Philly)
What ever happened to Trinidad as a possible Oscar opponent? I thought he was willing to come down to 160 because of the money.
Dan Rafael (12:57 AM)
The weight has been a big problem.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan what do you think of Daniel Santos as a fighter?
Dan Rafael (12:58 AM)
Very good, too inactive.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
If Mario gets married in the ring I'll carry a spit bucket for the ceremony.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, just to be fair and to clarify, Jorge from East L.A. picked Baldomir over Judah. I picked Gomez over Gatti. When I get married, you will be invited!!!!
Steve(phily)
Will miguel cotto drop out of your top 10 p4p when the new rankings are up?
Dan Rafael (12:59 AM)
No. Why should he?
Michael Buffer
Let's Get Ready to MARRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.......
Cory (Dallas)
What's next for Abraham? Fight with Pavlik next year?
Dan Rafael (1:02 AM)
Oct. 4 he will do his mandatory with Raul Marquez (will be on US PPV). Then maybe first part of next year Pavlik.
Mike Houston
Do you think Castillo beat F**** in their first fight?
Dan Rafael (1:02 AM)
I had it a draw.
Kevin: (Rialto, CA)
Danny! about the rankings! whats up with Margarito being ahead of Williams?!? how is that even plausible??
Dan Rafael (1:04 AM)
He just knocked out No. 1 Cotto, who has a much better resume than Williams, who did beat Margarito (barely) but was then outclassed by Quintana in the first fight.
Danny (New York)
Dan, will the Malignaggi-Hatton fight be on PPV? And do you know if there will be a press tour? Thanks!
Dan Rafael (1:04 AM)
It is on regular HBO.
Frank (NY, NY)
Abraham-Marquez on PPV?! Even w/o a recession, a guaranteed bust!
Dan Rafael (1:05 AM)
It is on US PPV as a service to American fans who are interested in seeing it. 99% of the revenue from the fight will come from Germany. The fight is not designed as a US PPV, merely an outlet so hardcore fans can see the fight in the US, where no network was interested in doing it, even for cheap. So in that context, I have no issue with it being on PPV.
Greg P(Staten Island,NY)
Do the fans realize Trinidad will never fight under 168lbs?
Dan Rafael (1:06 AM)
Apparently not.
Zach, MPLS
dan i am not a fan of pavlik-hopkins either but other than abraham or calzage, what fights at middleweight do u want to see him take, there really is no fight it seems that hbo would pick up on
Dan Rafael (1:06 AM)
HBO isn't the only network. I would rather see him fight Williams or even Mora.
terrance (jax ,florida)
Dan.. what do u think it will take to bring Floyd Mayweather out of retirement?
Dan Rafael (1:07 AM)
Who?
Stephen (St. Louis)
Speaking of freak conversion, last week's card was as good as advertised for it. Watched the fight with my grandfather and a couple of friends who had never watched a fight before in their lives. They left as casual fans at the very least.
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
I've noticed that the August fight schedule is pretty light. Is this typical or does it have more to do with it being the month of the Olympics?
Dan Rafael (1:08 AM)
August is always light and, personally, I am glad.
bob
hi sir, do you think manny has a chance against dela hoya?
Dan Rafael (1:08 AM)
Yes, I do.
Anthony (Youngstown, OH)
Who do you think wins the Diaz-Katsidis fight Dan? I would bet my life that it doesn't go 12 though.
Dan Rafael (1:11 AM)
I like Diaz in that one. It should be a great fight, but Diaz has the skill, the speed, the chin, the experience, the hometown fans, everything is in his favor other than one-punch power. But Katsidis telegraphs his shots.
Cory (Dallas)
Dan, what was the best fight you ever got to see live?
Dan Rafael (1:11 AM)
Corrales-Castillo 1, hands down.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Dan, I totally understand that this is your live/livelihood and constantly hearing about PBF is really annoying. But he was your and everybody else's #1 P4P. Boxing is worse without him, so the possibility of him coming back will remain intriguing, especially for possible meaningful fights at welterweight. Period.
Dan Rafael (1:12 AM)
Who?
Berndawg
I'm a little confused--did the David Haye fight get moved back from 10/18 due to an inury or is it now back on 10/18, there was no injury, but there is no opponent yet?
Dan Rafael (1:12 AM)
The fight is on Nov. 15, no opponent. Haye suffered an injury and the fight was pushed back.
Gabe, FL
Forgive me if I am wrong, but in my opinion a Williams-Margarito II would end up with Margarito winning without a doubt. Margo is a guy who learns from his mistakes.
Jared (Harrisburg, PA)
DanO, SummerSlam Hell In A Cell...Taker vs. Edge? Who do you got? I got Taker in a CLASSIC.
Dan Rafael (1:13 AM)
I agree. I am psyched for that.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Did anybody here Showtime say the winner of Tarver/Dawson would be the best light-heavyweight in the world??? I could have swore Calzaghe was...
Dan Rafael (1:15 AM)
Nobody ever accused the Showtime folk of being the brightest bulbs in the ceiling. They can deny reality all they want, but Calzaghe is THE light heavyweight champ no matter what Showtime says. That said, I am very happy that Showtime got the Tarver-Dawson fight made and I am looking forward to seeing it.
Winky Wright
Maybe I could fight F**** or the other F**** from Wisonsion.
Cory (Dallas)
Dan, does JMM have a legit shot a beating Casa?
Dan Rafael (1:15 AM)
Sure.
Joe (CA)
You are one of many who says Pacquiao is a 5 division champ, but your friend at yahoo, Kevin Iole, wrote that Barrera's Ring belt doesn't count cuz it is a "magazine." Have you had a discussion with kevin about that? If so, how did it go?
Dan Rafael (1:16 AM)
We agree to disagree.
Daniel K (Toronto,Ont)
Is paul williams really going to get back in th ring before the year ends?
Dan Rafael (1:17 AM)
Yes, that is the plan. They are working on a November HBO Boxing After Dark main event with Arreola on the undercard, as I wrote in Friday's notebook.
lamont, bohemia, NEW YORK
why do you keep talking economics, a good fight can be made with to determined fighters. with that being said WILLIAMS vs MARGARITO. let the fans see another good fight. it sold out the home depot center last time
Dan Rafael (1:18 AM)
You clearly do not understand that boxing is a business first and formost.
Joel Julio
Papa Freak, Are you coming to my fight in a few weeks?
Dan Rafael (1:18 AM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No, I will be watching at home.
Evan - Bakersfield, Ca
If the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight does happen, it should be a not so challenging victory for Oscar considering he's fought as high as 160 right?
Dan Rafael (1:20 AM)
Oscar looked horrible at 160, first of all. Second, he is 35 and slowed down a little and got hit with a lot of shots from Forbes, who is nowhere near as fast as Pacquiao and nowhere near the puncher of Pacquiao.
Shower Door
No way Judah takes as many stiches for his eye than I gave him for his arm!
Bert (Chino, CA)
Isreal Vasquez said yesterday the chemistry in the Cotto corner was not there. Is it possible we will see Cotto with a new trainer when he decides to return?
Dan Rafael (1:22 AM)
I think that is certainly possible.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Dan, true or false: given Oscar's performance against Forbes, a Berto knockout of Forbes sends a big message to the welterweight division and has him rise in your rankings?
Dan Rafael (1:23 AM)
Agreed. That is the point of Berto fighting Forbes. Can he stop the guy who went 12 with Oscar at 150 pounds?
Sean Richmond VA
So when Pacman-DLH gets made, will you and Merchant look for a cut?
Dan Rafael (1:23 AM)
LOL. We have joked about it.
Cory (Dallas)
Where are you blogging from Dan-O?
Dan Rafael (1:23 AM)
Ummmm, the office in my house.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
showtime is having a very weak year, save for vasquez marquez 3, no?
Dan Rafael (1:25 AM)
They have Tarver-Dawson and Peter-Klitschko coming up. They had Vazquez-Marquez 3. They had Abraham-Miranda 2. It's been a solid year.
Tyler (Champaign, IL)
Do you think Pavlik will be the first to stop Hopkins in October?
Dan Rafael (1:27 AM)
No.
Rejean (Toronto,Ont)
Dan, what exactly happened in the the Clottey-Baldomir fight?
Dan Rafael (1:28 AM)
I have a DVD of it and have seen it. Clottey was winning. It had been a dirty fight with some head butts on both sides. But the referee literally stopped it for no apparent reason, apparently saying that Clottey butted Baldy. That simply did not happen when it was stopped. It was an awful stoppage and I don't even view it as a real loss.
Matt H (Phx,az)
Tito Dantana, I've always respected Max's opinion on boxing and his "unafraid" style to tell it how it is. How respected is he in the boxing community? Do the established, veteran writers respect his style/opinion?
Dan Rafael (1:29 AM)
I have no idea about anyone else, but I do.
Randy (NY)
Hatton was so hyped before he started fighting on HBO, but since his first fight with Callazo I'm not excited to watch him. I had him losing to Callazo, had a boring fight at jr. welterweight and beat a finished castillo. not to mention actually falling to floyd. I'm surprised people still look forward to him fighting
Dan Rafael (1:29 AM)
I can't disagree. Hatton has not made good fights for quite some time.
Nate,Denver
I am now WBO qualify as #1 contender for the DRUNK/FREAK title at 205....
Dan (Champaign, IL)
Dan you pick if they fought in 3 months: Margarito vs. Clottey?
Dan Rafael (1:31 AM)
Margarito (again).
Jeff (New York)
How are DIAZ-KATSIDIS tickets selling?
Dan Rafael (1:31 AM)
From what I am told, very well. So well, that additional seats were put on sale a few days ago.
Cyrus (San Francisco, CA)
It was about 7am on the 27th in India, but I still managed to catch the Cotto Margarito fight at a horse club (don't ask me why they were showing it) in Bombay. This was several hours after I got back from my cousins wedding. It makes the fight all the better
Dan Rafael (1:32 AM)
You're a Freak.
Kory (Missouri)
It seemed to me that kellerman was giving too much credit to zab just for making a fight of it. he was still getting whipped
Dan Rafael (1:33 AM)
Whipped? It was a close, competitive, good fight.
Eric (NYC)
Showtime also had Torres-Holt II
Dan Rafael (1:33 AM)
True.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, once upon a time I suggested to you that a Margarito vs. Hatton fight would be great, and you agreed with me. Question, do you feel the same today, and do you think that may be a possible fight for early next year (if Hatton beats Paulie)?
Dan Rafael (1:33 AM)
I don't. I think Margarito would absolutely freaking steamroll Hatton.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Dan, after watching the replay of Cotto-Margarito tonight, I think it would be highly successful if Miguel used the southpaw stance more if there is a rematch. What are your thoughts on this?
Dan Rafael (1:35 AM)
He's right-handed and that is how he fights best. If he wants to switch once in awhile, so be it, but he's at his best as a right-hander.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
my gf said she didnt feel well tonight and wanted me to take care of her, but I told her I couldnt bc I was watching boxing...freak?
Dan Rafael (1:36 AM)
No, inconsiderate jerk.
Juice (Salisbury, MA)
When was the last fight between two Americans at an "exotic" foreign location? Can't be Tyson-Douglas, can it?
Dan Rafael (1:36 AM)
How about the fight I was at in March -- Nate Campbell-Juan Diaz in Cancun, Mexico?
Drev (Austin)
A piece of Margarito had to be lost in his fight with Cotto. He can take a punch, but he suffered a good amount of punishment. After a while you can't just rely on a good chin.
Ethan (Waco, Texas)
Damn. I guess life goes on without Floyd Mayweather.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Strange thought: if Pac-Man takes big money fights against De La Hoya and Hatton in the next year, it is plausible he wins both in exciting fashion and cements #1 P4P but does nothing to establish himself at 135, leaving him ranked third or fourth in your division rankings despite being the best boxer in the world. Weird, no?
Dan Rafael (1:39 AM)
That is absolutely a potential scenario.
Emad Baddour Cleveland, Oh
Do you think Berto beats Forbes?
Dan Rafael (1:39 AM)
At the end of the day, yes.
Benvenuto (Miami)
Assuming Paulie beats Hatton (which is obviously my pick) what can be next for Paulie?
Dan Rafael (1:41 AM)
If that happens, Paulie will be in a great position. If it's a good fight there could be a big-money rematch with Hatton. There would be possible fights with the other titleholders at 140 and maybe, just maybe, Malignaggi would want to go up to 147 and face Cotto in a rematch in Cotto's comeback fight. That would be a sellable rematch.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Prime Pacman vs. Prime Sugar Shane at 135, who wins?
Dan Rafael (1:41 AM)
Shane knocks him out.
Michael (New York)
Dan, what next for Calzaghe if he beats Jones? The Dawson-Tarver winner?
Dan Rafael (1:43 AM)
I think he would look to fight Pavlik if Pavlik beats Hopkins.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Prime Shane vs. Prime Meldrick Taylor (pre-Chavez)?
Dan Rafael (1:43 AM)
At what weight?
Jay (Philly)
You going to ESPN 2 show in DC featuring Anthony Thompson?
Dan Rafael (1:44 AM)
If I am in town, probably.
Greg P(Staten Island,NY)
Shane 135lb in the top 10 all-time?
Dan Rafael (1:44 AM)
Very possibly. I've never made a list, but if he's not top 10, he's close.
Matt (Washington, DC)
It seems you always pick the greats from yesteryear (135 Shane over Pac-Man, Duran over anybody ever, lots and lots of people over Floyd, etc.). Can you give us a few fighters today who you would pick in matchups against Hall of Famers in their division from back in the day?
Dan Rafael (1:46 AM)
I think a guy like Pacquiao would beat many of the best feathers and junior feathers of all time.
Benvenuto (Miami)
Prime Meldrick Taylor vs. Prime Sugar Shane......pick the winner.....
Dan Rafael (1:47 AM)
Shane.
Paul (Japan)
do you think there will be a rematch with Clotty and Cotto
Dan Rafael (1:47 AM)
They have never fought yet.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, so we know Vazquez is taking the year off, but when he comes back in 2009, what fight do you think he takes first? Marquez IV? Arce? Maybe even Barrera?
Dan Rafael (1:48 AM)
I suspect we will see a fourth fight with Marquez.
Bert (Chino, CA)
I hear Floyd Mayweather Sr. is a name being thrown around to fill the vacancy in the Hatton corner? You think Floyd Sr. can improve Hatton?
Dan Rafael (1:50 AM)
That is being discussed. I think at this stage of Ricky's career old dogs don't learn new tricks and his style is nothing like the style Mayweather Sr. teaches.
Brian (Boston)
Dan- Any more details on Duddy-Phillips? Is there a date or venue yet?
Dan Rafael (1:51 AM)
No, I am not sure it will even happen. All kinds of issues over options on Duddy. His people don't want to give up options and Verno's promoter, Artie Pelullo, would NEVER put one of his titleholders in an optional defense without having a piece of the other guy in case he wins.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Better fight, JMMarquez-Pacquaio III or Vazquez-Marquez IV?
Dan Rafael (1:52 AM)
Both are dynamite.
JohnnyPhD
How do you rank Taylor at 7th at 168 when he hasn't fought a fight in that division? Just curious
Dan Rafael (1:53 AM)
He fought Pavlik there and although he lost, it was close and get gets a little beefit of the doubt for his resume at middleweight when the super middlweight division is pretty lean at the lower end of the top 10.
Jason (Seattle)
I'm watching Cotto-Margarito for the first time right now. It is AMAZING how well Manny Steward called what was going to happen even as Cotto was dominating. Max had a really good night, too.
Dan Rafael (1:53 AM)
Agreed.
Jimmy (Philly)
Danno...I was ringside last week for Cotto/Margo....best atmosphere since Floyd/Hatton but how about those 108 pounders? Awesome scrap and the HUGE dog won!!!
Dan Rafael (1:55 AM)
Yes, that was a very good fight, which many of us suspected ahead of time that it would be.
Chris (Matthews, NC)
Dan, the Ricardo Mayorga-Shane Mosley fight isn't too far away. How do you think it plays out?
Dan Rafael (1:56 AM)
Shane big. Probably a late knockout.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, I go away for a bit to watch some sleazy Skinemax movie and you are still going strong and it's almost 2am. A true pimp in my book.
Dan Rafael (1:57 AM)
You should be banned for skipping part of the chat in favor of some crappy movie you could record.
Ellie (TX)
how do you think Khan will do against the top at 135? Is it hype or is he really worthy of the attention. (I haven't seen his fights other than youtube)
Dan Rafael (1:58 AM)
He has enormous talent but a very questionable chin. Against some of today's top 135-pounders, he would be in serious trouble until he tightens up his defense, which I assume is part of the reason he brought in a new trainer last week.
Jason (Seattle)
You know, Margarito is a big lanky guy, how about Margarito-Pavlik at 160?
Dan Rafael (1:59 AM)
I had that exact conversation with Larry Merchant earlier today about that being a possible fight down the road.
David(Jersey)
Hey Dan, why aren't Shane and Ricardo fighting at 147?
Dan Rafael (2:00 AM)
Mayorga can barely make 154 at this point, so 147 is out of the question.
Marc (Philly)
Steve "USS" Cunningham should have an announcemnet for his next fight very shortly
Dan Rafael (2:00 AM)
Wonderful.
Jimmy (Philly)
Danno....you should eat at Craftsteak @ The MGM Grand next time in LV.....most gastros say it's the best joint in town and I agree.
Dan Rafael (2:01 AM)
It is awesome. I had dinner there one night last week.
Ellie (NY)
You really dropped Quintana far on the rankings. First round knockouts are usually more luck than anything. He just got caught by a big guy who he out boxed for 12 rounds previously. That's like saying Holt is a better fighter than Torres because of their last fight.
Dan Rafael (2:02 AM)
Rankings are based mostly on actual results. A first-round KO is not a good result. It means you drop in the rankings.
todd (sf, calif)
is this chat still live? i just crossed the bay bridge and arrived home minutes ago. you're a stud dan!!!
Emad Baddour Cleveland, Oh
Best young prospect, Danny Jacobs or Gamboa??
Dan Rafael (2:04 AM)
Both good prospects. Gamboa is a bit more advanced in terms of his competition, but I think we will be hearing a lot from both of them.
Jimmy (Philadelphia)
D....where will you be on SEPT 13? JMM/Casa in Vegas or Guzman/Nate in ???
Dan Rafael (2:05 AM)
Probably in Vegas.
Lisa (SC)
Am I the only girl Freak on the Chat tonight? I pick joe calzaghe against roy jones because joe is so pretty
530 ENE (Chico, California)
Buy or Sell: Down the road.......Antonio Margarito vs Alfredo Angulo or Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
Dan Rafael (2:07 AM)
I don't see either happening. Chavez would be murdered. Angulo is an exciting prospect with a nice future, but I just don't see that one happening, especially since Angulo is promoted by Gary Shaw and Margarito is with Bob Arum and Arum and Shaw, to put it nicely, aren't chums.
Jimmy (Philly)
D...Speaking of Guzman/Nate....why does Showtime/Shaw wait SO LONG to announce venues? Does Guzman/Nate have a home?
Dan Rafael (2:08 AM)

Matt H (Phx, az)

RMD (NY)

Dan Rafael (2:10 AM)

Dan Rafael (2:10 AM)
OK, Freaks -- it's been a fun late-night RAD. Hope you enjoyed the show tonight. Make sure you read all about on the boxing page and the blog from Saturday. Monday scorecard coming as well. Peace.
