Chat with golfer Roland Thatcher
![]() |
An 8-year pro, Thatcher has two top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events in 2008. He is currently No. 137 on the Tour's money rankings. Thatcher was the subject of an ESPN.com blog by Jason Sobel, where Sobel caddied for Thatcher during the opening round of the 2007 Chattanooga Classic.
Send in your questions now and stop by Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET to chat with Roland!
Roland Thatcher (2:58 PM)
Glad to be here, and hopefully we can have some fun. I hope to give you a little insight to the world of golf!
Churchill, Illinois
Ever toy with the idea of wearing crazy clothes like Ian Poulter on the tour?
Roland Thatcher (3:00 PM)
No I do not think I have the body type for those clothes. Those clothes are for really skinny people with no backside. I had a company Rosasen send me some clothes and I thought they were really cool until my wife saw me in them and laughed at me.
tyler
Roland can you tell us the funniest thing that has happened on tour this year.
Roland Thatcher (3:01 PM)
It is pretty dull out there, but I almost fell in the drink trying to hit a shot this year. Other than that, I've had a pretty dull year. Nothing to crazy, unlike years past.
Dave (Des Moines)
I think it's cool that 20 PGA Club professionals get to play in the PGA Championship. Out on Tour, is it easy to 'spot' a player who isn't a regular on the PGA Tour?
Roland Thatcher (3:02 PM)
It is because most of the rgualrs have sponsorships, which means some of the other guys are dressing better than us. And some of the guys also walk around with a little bit of a clueless look on their face.
Travis (TX)
Can you tell me how ti fix my slice?
Roland Thatcher (3:04 PM)
Haha let's see. Tighten your grip...actually the best way to do it is to aim right...golf is a game of opposites. Fixing a slice over the web is a pretty tough task.
Candy, Houston
I've seen your website, RolandThatcher.com, and it looks really cool. Is this becoming a trend among professional athletes nowadays?
Roland Thatcher (3:07 PM)
Yes it is. It was not my idea, nor did I put it together. A lot of us have agents who represent us and it is just a great way to get your name and sponsors out easily. I was a little skeptical myself, but it is a great way to keep fans informaed and get people interested in the companies that sponsor me...at first I thought only my mom and my wife would check it out, but I tell you it was a lot more people that that.
Billy, Chicago
Ever played with John Daly? With or without his shirt on?
Roland Thatcher (3:08 PM)
No and no! I have never played with him, but from all accounts he is a great guy; but playing with his gallery may be a little distracting.
Kenny
How terrible a caddy was Sobel?
Roland Thatcher (3:09 PM)
I tell you he did a really good job. My caddy was there for the prep wortk the day before, which was huge. But he caught on pretty quick, and I was kind of surprised. But maybe I should not have been with the amount of gold Jason watches. We did not make the weekend, but that was not his fault.
Jimmy (NH)
What are your thoughts on Tiger saying he doesn't watch much golf anymore?
Roland Thatcher (3:11 PM)
I still call him a liar on that! I am sure that he is watching something. He may not be watching as much...but it must be tough for him to watch tournaments he is not involved in. For him to be sitting back and watching a tournament he knows he can win must be pretty hard.
Stephanie (CT)
Now that you are spending the week as a member of the media, do you appreciate that part of the industry a bit more?
Roland Thatcher (3:13 PM)
I do not think I had a lack of appreciation before. But yes. I did a few things with Jason on .com and picking the top 25 picks. That was a lot of effort for a very small amount of material. I cannot imagine having to be dedicated to the amount of work reporters put in.
Billy Bob
I hear you have a beer sponsorship. How sweet is that??!!
Roland Thatcher (3:16 PM)
It is a great deal and the best part of it is I get paid in product only. I got a keg-o-rator is St. Arnold's Brewing Company in Texas. It was from my request that the whole thing started. I wanted a local company to be a part of and that was my choice. So we went to talk to them and they bought the deal and it has been a great two year deal. Right now they are only in Texas, but one day they may be coming at you nationwide. Beer is a passion on mine, myself and a buddy of mine brew our own beer. I would definitely tell people in Texas to check it out and pick up a few six packs. I will say when you are travelling so much, free beer is a good way to keep your friends.
Gavin (Atlanta)
I heard you are a big Dodgers fan...Good move or bad move getting Manny?
Roland Thatcher (3:19 PM)
I think overall it was a great move. They do have 5 OF now, but when you have a team that is leading the NL in ERA but are second to last in hitting I cannot see how it is a bad move. The offense has life for the first time in years. If they can keep him after this year it would be interesting. I feel bad for Pierre and we will see how it works out. It is very exciting, and I watch every game...especially with this injury...if you want to talk Dodgers baseball we can do it all day!
Paul (Portland, OR)
Ever been up here to Portland then? Quite a few craft and microbreweries per capita!
Roland Thatcher (3:21 PM)
I like the breweries out of Bend Oregon, which do the porter. We play a Nationwide event in Eugene and I feel it is my duty to check out of the local breweries. I actually modeled one of my home brews after the porter up in Bend.
Tyler Coy (Tulsa,OK)
Do you think the Sooners will win the BCS this year?
Roland Thatcher (3:22 PM)
No because they have to play SEC teams in the title game and will get beat!
Jeff - Gulfport
How worried are you that your Auburn Tigers are going to get demolished, once again, but the defending SEC Champion LSU Tigers? That has to be devastating?
Roland Thatcher (3:24 PM)
You better look up the meaning of demolished...they have not one by more than a score in the last eight years. If it had not been for the luckiest catch in college football you would have lost three games...still a great catch.
Paul (Portland, OR)
That would be Dechuttes Black Butte Porter. All their beers are good.
Roland Thatcher (3:24 PM)
There you go.
Dave (Phoenix)
Who is your ideal foursome to play with? And where would you play?
Roland Thatcher (3:26 PM)
I would take my dad to Augusta, along with my buddy Brent Pullan, and Nicklaus. That would be great. If I ever had the chance to bring some people to Augusta, especially my dad, that would special.
Roland Thatcher (3:28 PM)
I has a lot of fun. Glad we talked about a lot of different things, and I hope you enjoy the event. And if you have any more questions check out my website and I will be happy to answer them at rolandthatcher.com
