Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks. Not much boxing this weekend but plenty of news to discuss, such as the whole De La Hoya-Pacquiao-Mora business. Hope you had a chance to read the stories and blog on that and this week's new p4p rankings. Let's get right to it.
yorkis (philly)
Pacman has to take the 30%, right? isn't 30% of an Oscar fight way more than he'll make anywhere else?
Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Bingo.
Ricardo (LA)
Danny Ramirez (Dodgers fan here), is November 1 a set date for Margarito? If so, are they close on choosing an opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Bob Arum says Margarito will go on Nov. 1 and he told me this week he is intent on making a rematch with Clottey, which would unify belts. As for the Dodger Stadium aspect, that is not done. He'd like to go there but they are working on it. He needs to see how much it would cost and various other logisitcal things.
JD, Saratoga NY
How much money would Pac man make if he took 30% in a fight w/ DLH?
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
Certainly more than $10 million. Maybe as much as $15 million or so million. That's a lot of dough, especially when the alternative is a very tough fight against Humberto Soto for probably about $3 million.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
I thought Oscar was looking for the biggest money fight out there. D$$$$$ maybe its me but isn't a ODH/Margarito fight bigger financially than ODH/Mora? It would seem more mainstream fans would know Tony after stopping Cotto?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
I don't know if more mainstream fans know Margarito than Mora, who gained a lot of mainstream notice for his role on The Contender. However, I believe a Margarito-Oscar fight would generate a lot more money and excitement than Mora.
JD, Saratoga NY
In that case, I second Richard Schaffer in saying, make sure Manny knows he gets paid in dollars and not percentages.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Richard is a smart guy.
Michael (Roxbury, NJ)
Do you know what sergio's % will be? and also the minimum "number" they said he would def get?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
I don't know for certain but I would guess he'd be cut in probably for about 10-15%, which would be far and away his biggest payday by millions.
Frank(Phx)
Dan, I read the date Nov. 11th being thrown around for the Margarito fight. That's a Tuesday I believe, was that maybe a misprint I read or is that a date being discussed as well?
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
Nov. 1.
Justin
Dan, buy or sell that Mora/DLH actually takes place...I just don't see it happening
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
Sell. I agree with you. I have received in this chat alone OVERWHELMING negativity from fans. It's not so much that they hate the fight, but they think it's a huge step down from a possible Pacquiao fight and certainly a Margarito fight.
Joe: San Francisco, CA
Turning down potential Oscar fights is becoming an epidemic: Floyd, Hatton, Pacquiao. Who knew getting someone to take a $10M payday would be so difficult.
Mike NJ
Buy or Sell. Manny reconsiders and takes Oscar's offer
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
Buy. I think it's possible. Behind the scenes, I am sure things are in motion.
Justin
No notebook today?
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
Nope.
Berndawg
Any word on the other PPV fight(s) for the 9/13 date?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
Well you know about the two fights announced -- Casamayor-Marquez and Mora-Forrest 2. One of the other TV fights probably will be Julio "Baby Face" Garcia against Yory Boy Campas. The fourth TV fight is still under discussion as far as I know.
Dave, NJ
Dan do you see any of our Olympians winning even 1 medal? I've watched every match and I'm not impressed with any of them.
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
I have been watching all of the fights - and not sleeping a lot because I've been staying up for the live coverage on CNBC. I think Andrade will medal -- just a matter of what color it is. I also give Wilder a very good shot for a medal. I have been impressed by both of them.
Golden Boy Promotions
Ruiz vs Valuev has been moved to the undercard of DLH vs Mora to give all the fans more bang for there buck.
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Ouch.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Are you attending tonight's FNF? I'll be covering the fight, my first one...What time would you recommend getting there, if the doors open at 6...Thanks for the advice for a newbie like myself...
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
I will probably be there. First bell a little after 7. First fight for TV will be taped beginning at 8 pm (although the telecast doesn't air until 9 pm). I'll try to be there around 7 or so. I gotta figure out where the heck the place is, which is why I am taking my wife's car -- the one with the GPS!
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Oscar always talks about the best thing for boxing and promoting it. If he's worried about the future of boxing, wouldn't you think he'd be willing to sacrifice a little dough (which he has plenty of) for the good of the sport?
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Exactly. I could not agree more. Words are one thing. Action is something different.
edubb (Sactown)
All praise the bearded one... I plan on taking my 4 month old son to the Casamayor, Marquez fight on Sept 13th. Do they have specific age restrictions? You can never start them off to early you know...
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
There are no restrictions that I know of, but to me, 4 is way to young to be at a fight.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
When did Manny switch brains with Allen Green and Winky Wright?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Apparently, this week.
Marc (Malden, MA)
I have a hard time watching Olympic boxing because the scoring system sucks.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
I agree, the system is awful. But when I watch, I am not doing it to necessarily see exciting fights. I mean I hope they are, but what I really do is watch the boxers and try to see who I think will make a good professional.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Almost watch it like a scouting combine, not a boxing show.
Rick Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, The best fight out there for DLH is Margo, even if he loses to Margo, it would't tarnish his legacy, because he took on the best till the very end.
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
I couldn't agree more.
Ronak (NY)
You think Jason Estrada will have any hope in this heavyweight divison?
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
Not really. I have been dramatically unimpressed with him since Day 1.
Big M (Atlanta)
Any truth to the rumor that PBF has been secretly training.. and therefore might be Oscar's real opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I heard that rumor and frankly have no idea if it's true. That said, I would not be surprised if Floyd was working out. Just because he retired does not mean he will never work out again.
Nathan (Raleigh, NC)
What did you think of your boy Joel Julio? I'd like to see him go up against a guy like Alex Bunema or Roman Karmazin before he fights the top guys.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I thought he looked very good and made it very exciting. Varela showed a lot of heart to keep getting up. I didn't like that LC kept getting hit with jabs. He needs to tighten up the defense. But he's pretty damn good. Both of those fights would be interesting that you mentioned. However, LC will probably next face Sergio Martinez on HBO on Oct. 4 for the WBC's interim title.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Dan, why wasn't there any autographed card of you in the Topps Co-Signers Autographs?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
LOL! They didn't ask me. I actually love that series of cards and have been buying many of the autographed boxing cards for myself.
Dave, NJ
R.I.P. Rhoshii Wells...
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
A shame. He was shot to death this week. I didn't know him well but had covered a few of his fights and had spoken to him a few times. Was always a gentleman.
Ronak (NY)
I heard Golden Boy Promotions won the purse bid for Salido v Cruz, any tv date?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
Incorrect. Banner Promotions won the bid. No date yet, but likely in September and probably no US TV.
Nathan (Raleigh, NC)
Any word on whether the Pavlik/Hopkins bout will be ten or twelve rounds? I assumed that it would be twelve, even though it's a non-title fight, but on PPV, but I saw an interview with Kelly where he said it was ten. Why would the Pavlik camp agree to that?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
Definitely 12.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Dan! Great blog yesterday! As a boxing freak I love that stuff! What were you expecting Wald to say when you called him back with Shaw's comments? How shocked were you by them and did you tell Wald that Shaw called him an idiot?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
Thanks. I had no idea what Jeff was going to say. If you know Gary and you know Jeff, it is no shock that they would have called each other some names. Really not a big deal.
g(atl)
Since Dibella has them both, do you think we will see Quintana vs. killer Kermit?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
I think that is possible in the future, but right now it would be stupid for both guys.
Frank(Phx)
Dan, do you believe Calzaghe's off and on again talks on retiring. Now he's saying the Jone's fight will be his last. Will we never see him fight Pavlik?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Who knows.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Pavlik and Hopkins should be 0 rounds
Joe: San Francisco, CA
Any chance of any U.S. TV coverage for Bute-Andrade?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Unlikely.
REG MEMPHIS
DAN, I'm not an Oscar fan at all first. It seems to me he is just being greedy, give pacman 35-40% and lets fight. How much money does Oscar need
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Great blog on the Jeff Wald/Schaefer/Arum back story on de la Hoya & Mora. Gives us freaks a real inside scoop from directly from the promoters, details on options taken by promoters on other fightes, and the conflicts & clashes between promoters in order to put together a major fight.
Carlos (Funky Town, TX)
I dont think Manny knows they are paying him in dollars he problably thinks they are paying him in Pesos. 10 to 15 MILLION Dollars Manny not pesos.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Also, if everyone involved thinks about this: DLH vs Margarito in Dodger stadium, DLH from nearby East Los, and Marg with his strong following, all the mexican fans, that would be a great event to end the year.
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
I agree but it ain't happening.
Chuck, Philly
The best Oscar fight for the sport would be one that takes place on network television.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Why not Clottey for Oscar, instead of subjecting us to the Latin Fake
Big Brother
I noticed the original article regarding the stalemate between DLH/PAC was later edited to add more quotes from Golden Boy's side. Seemed a bit bias to me. Can you explain why it was edited?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
It wasn't edited -- it was updated. The original story went out minus Golden Boy quotes with a line that said that Schaefer was unavailable for comment. He was in a meeting when I called. When he called me back an hour or so later, I updated the story. Pretty simple.
Mike
Stupid question now but do you think had Zab Judah beat Clottey he would have a shot at DLH?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Read the first two words of your question.
Chris (Appleton, WI)
Any rumors of who's participating in the new season of the Contender that you would like to tell us?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
I am told that Darnell "Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson will be in the show.
Ben (UK)
Any info on Breidis Prescott, opponent for Amir Khan on Sept 6?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Tough Colombian guy. Was just featured in a main event on ESPN2 a few weeks ago.
Jeff, Las Vegas. NV
Who you picking tonight thompson or Ishmail? (Ishmail)
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
Thompson is the better overall fighter with a lot more skill and he's younger. I'm picking The Messenger.
Matt (Philly)
If DLH makes the fight with Mora, I'm going to be so irritated that it will give the DLH-haters another opportunity to say he ducked the best opponents.
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
People can be upset about a Mora match all the want, but it would be out of line to say Oscar ducked the best opponents. Go look at his record -- he fought everybody -- Whitaker, Mayweather, Vargas, Quartey, Trinidad, Mosley, Hopkins, etc... That is not a valid argument. Now, is Oscar looking for a little bit easier of a fight in his career finale? Sure, but there is nothing wrong with that.
BATPHONE
ring, ring, ring
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
Hello?
Dale (carson city, ca)
Watched WNF and heard the shout out by Nate Campbell to you about the LC. If he is not already there he has to be in the Top 3 of the Freaks Favorite Active fighters. Look forward to seeing him on the 13th.
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
I am too.
Biz (Philly)
Who ya got in the cage Sunday night, Edge or Taker?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Taker. I am stoked for the Hell in a Cell!!!!!! Summerslam is where it is at this weekend.
Sean (NY, NY )
There is nothing wrong with taking an easier fight, if his camp hadn't been saying all along that he wanted to go out fighting "the best". Otherwise, why would he have wanted Cotto so bad???
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
I agree with that statement. If you say all the time you want to fight the best or you want to give the fans what they want, etc... do it and stop with the lip service.
Tony (Orlando)
Have you talked to Ruiz lately? How's he doing...is he preped for Valuev?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
I talked to Johnny in Las Vegas last month and he seemed in great spirits and excited for the fight.
gus Passaic NJ
I read cazares is having a tough time getting down to 108, besides that will the calderon/cazares ppv be shown in the states?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Cazares struggling with weight is no surprise. After the first fight, he fought over the weight and there was serious talk that he would move up for good. Yes, the fight will be on US PPV on Aug. 30. It's a Top Rank Latin Fury card.
Drew (Philly)
Danimal, can you give us some insight into why you think DLH v Margo won't happen??
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Oscar doesn't want it.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Going from Manny to Mora is like going from smokehouse beef brisket to Angus cheese steak. You'll like just not as much
Christian, Miami
Mad props from your boy Julio to you. I had some people over and had to explain why i got such a kick out of seeing Love Child on his Trunks and the announcer using it at the end.
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
LeBronze James (Bejing)
Dan, what kind of promotor is Wald to give Gary Shaw 3 options to your fighter for the chance to fight Forrest???
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
It is common practice that you give options to the promoter of a titleholder when you are given the chance to fight for that title when you are not a mandatory challenger.
Kim, Tampa
all nate campbell did was beat one good fighter and now everyone is saying he is all over him is it just me or does anyone else see guzman winning this fight? thanks!
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
I think Nate is an excellent fighter and an exciting fighter, but I also believe Guzman's style could give him nightmares like it did to Soto. But Nate is a big guy with a big punch.
James (Mora NM)
Dantastic, how many freaking times do you have to explain how DLH hasn't ducked anybody. DAMN!
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
4,678,404.
Brian (NY)
even though it's common practice, wasn't options on fighters fo rpromoters outlawed as part of the Muhammad Ali act?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
No.
Carlos (Funky Town, TX)
Oscar should just fight Ann Wolf or Laila Ali that would be a more entertaining fight than a fight with Mora.
Ronak (NY)
Is the Duddy v Phillips fight dead?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
I would say dying, not dead.
Andres (Chula Vista, CA)
When is Abner Mares fighting again?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
He will wind up on one of the PPVs this fall -- maybe on Sept. 13, maybe Oct. 18 and maybe Dec. 6.
Rick, Marina, Ca
I agree with you Kim in Tampa, I never heard of Nate until he beat the Baby Bull and now he's some type of super fighter it seems everyone is making him out to be.
Mike
Dan if pac doesnt fight DLH i would love to see him versus Soto. Any chance of this happening?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Yes, that is the fight Arum says he will make if there is no Oscar fight.
Il Principe (New York, New York)
Historical analysis request for the one fight not made between the top welterweights of the later 1990s: Give us your pick for Trinidad v. Quartey...
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
Would have loved that fight. I think at one point it was discussed. Anyway, I would have taken Trinidad. Ike was terrific, but I think Tito would have knocked him out.
Floyd Mayweather
Tell Manny you can make it rain in the clubs with 30%
Kory (Barksdale AFB, LA)
Hatton/Pacquiao who wins?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Would love to see it and I think it's a possibility next year. I think I would lean to Pacquiao but want to see how Ricky looks against Paulie in November.
LeBronze James (Bejing)
Dan, if Manny and Margarito were both both put on the Nov 1 card wouldn't that sell some serious tickets at Dodger Stadium?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Yes, but it is not realistic economically.
Dale (carson city, ca)
That Mora fight is a no win fight for DLH to "end" his career on. If he beats him Mora will be labled as overrated. But Mora is dangerous + makes ugly fights so its tough to look good against him. If Mora decisons him which is possible DLH will end his career in the most dissapointing fashion it will not tarnish his legacy but it would be a bitter pill
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Sorry, Bat Phone.
corey from(westwick)
Sorry Dan I don't agree I know Oscar is the star but Manny draws what about 450,000 buys every time he fights a 70- 30 split is not right you gotta figure if they did fight the fight would most likely due 1 million buys that a little less then half a 40-60 split and some of the ppv money like I said Oscar is the star but Pacquiao shines more
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Someone needs a little lesson in reality. Manny DOES NOT draw that many PPVs. In fact, he has never done that many PPV buys. Ever. His rematch with Marquez did around 400,000, maybe a touch more. None of the Morales fights did more than 400,000. The Solis fight was lucky if it did 175,000. Unless you count his fight in 2002 against Jorge Julio, which was on the Lewis-Tyson undercard (a ppv that did almost 2 million) Manny has never done that much.
yorkis (philly)
If not for boxing chats, downloading overseas fights, and porn, would we even need the Internet?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Probably not.
David(Jersey)
Dan fill in the blank: DLH fighting in 09 instead of December has a _% chance of happening.
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
I have been saying for months that I thought it was very possible (even likely) that Oscar would bag Dec. 6, come back in May 2009 and fight Hatton if he beats Malignaggi or do a rematch with Mayweather since I believe Floyd will unretire at some point.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Me and the boys were discussing mythical matchups over the weekend and who would be the victor between Kelly Pavlik and a prime Gerald McClellan. Who ya got?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
Sick fight. Tough one to call. Both guys have enormous power. I think I would lean to G-Man.
Justin
Who is to blame for Jermain Taylor's seriously disappointing career
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
Beating BHop twice and being undisputed middleweight champion is not disappointing.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, excuse my tardiness, court took longer than expected. About De La Hoya-Mora, couldn't it also just be a ploy to convince Pacquaio to just take the 30%???
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
That's what many Freaks hope.
Alex (Los Angeles, CA)
Dan, let's keep it real. Is Oscar scared of Margarito?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
I don't believe he is "scared" of anyone in the ring. But for whatever reason, he has a different idea of the kind of fight he wants to do, which is his right. I know Margarito is hot right now and he scored a huge win. No disrespect. But it's not like Margarito is an all-time great (like Pacquiao) or has mainstream recognition (like Mora) or is undefeated (he lost a year ago to Paul Williams). If Oscar doesn't want to fight him, so be it.
Shower Door
DTM, tell Oscar I'll take a 70-30 split
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Danaconda, your article mentioned that De La Hoya was considering three fighters, one of whom he was negotiating with already (Mora), who were the other two? It wasn't Chavez Jr., was it?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
The other two, if there really were two others, would be Mayweather (trying to convince him to unretire) and maybe Shane Mosley.
Jim (Tacoma, WA)
My 11 year streak of buying every HBO PPV will end on Oct. 18. Pavlik-Hopkins just doesn't do it for me. Though it might be competitive, I think B-Hop will definitely stink it out. As hard as it is to admit, I'm just not interested in paying 50 bucks for it.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
You will not be alone.
Los, Washington DC
In your opinion from the information you gathered, who is right between the language in the contract between Mora and Forrest?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
I have no idea. The only contracts I deal with are my own.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Any word on what Showtime has in store for November or December?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
November is up in the air, but I am told Glen Johnson-Shaun George is possible. And December might be dark.
JQ (Roswell, NM)
Dan for the count, the Love Child has always looked a tad fluffy to me, has he ever considered trimming down a weight class?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
He fought most of his career at welterweight. I think he's just fine at 154.
Derek ( Edmonton, alberta)
dan, I'll fight Oscar for 95-5. But I can only get down as low as 170.
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I'll let him know.
Jason (Gainesville, VA)
Dantastic, Couldn't Oscar and Pac-Man do a 60/30 split with the winner getting the additional 10%. That would put more buzz on the promotion. We might even get a war like Jaidon-Bika.
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I suggested exactly that proposition.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
What's up for Mosley if he soundly def Mayorga ?
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
I'm not sure, but ideally, if Shane wins, I'd like to see him fight Margarito in early 2009.
Brian (NY)
In hindsight, The Love child's only loss to Quintana wasn't all that bad. It was SD and Quintana went on to win a title. Do you think he'll ever go back to 147?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He's not going back to 147.
Brian (Detroit, MI)
If Mayweather DLH II ended up happening, do you see a more exciting fight than the first?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
It can't be worse can it?
Scott (Ogden, UT)
Excuses,excuses,excuses...that's all I've heard for DLH when he himself said he wanted to go out fighting the best. Mora is clearly no where near that definition. Hell until he beat Forrest everybody in this chat including you Dan said Mora sucked!!!
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
You are right, which is why Golden Boy has a HUGE PR problem right now.
Tryce Belleville mi
Are you going to hopkins vs pavlik fight?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
Of course.
Christian, Miami
speaking of Bika, what happened to him? Did he fall victim to the latest Contender curse?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
No, he has fought since the show, just in Australia.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Alot of talk on Mora-de la Hoya. But before we cross that bridge who do you like in the Mora-Forrest rematch? If both bring their A game I think Forrest has more skills to win the bout.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
I think Vernon should be the favorite.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Tavaris Cloud...how fun is he to watch...WOW
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
His performance against Julio Gonzalez was terrific. I can't wait to see Cloud's next fight.
Christian, Miami
Sorry, but just had to bring it up. Not only was LC having serious issues making weight for the Quintana fight, but the fight was outdoors in Las Vegas w/ over 90 degree weather. Not an excuse but adds context to the loss.
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Agreed, but Quintana suffered from the same heat. I have never made excuses for LC's loss in that fight. He got beat by the better guy that night.
Jose M La Habra Ca
Who's Angulo fighting next?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Andrey Tsurkan on Oct. 4 on HBO. You should bookmark the schedule I keep on ESPN.com.
Winky Wright (St. Petersburg, FL)
I'll fight Oscar on Dec. 6 for a 70-30 split...with me getting the 70 %
Marc (Philly)
Future HOF and the pride of Philly Stevie "USS Cunningham" send his very best to all of the fight freaks here today
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Wonderful. Don't forget the DVDs.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Ban Jose M. The schedule is there. Use it.
Rick, Marina, Ca
How about a Love Child-Angulo or Kirkland fight. In the words of good ole JR, that would be a slobber knocker.
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I love both of those fights as well as Angulo vs. Kirkland.
Mark (Mary Esther, FL)
Dan, when is Don King going to get off his butt and do some promotion for the Campbell-Guzman fight. THe Beau Rivage still doesn't even know anything about a ticket sale date or prices! We are less than a month away. Any inside info?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
That is pathetic if it's true.
pribs (Bethlehem, PA)
While Oscar is waiting for Mora vs Forrest, send him a copy of "Chinatown", and ask him to pay attention to the question, "How much better can you eat? What do you want to buy that you can't already afford?"
Adam (Arlington, VA)
Who are the candidates for the Gamboa fight on 10/4?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
He's probably fighting Marcos Ramirez.
Tim (Denver)
Everybody is talking crap about Oscar, and yes I agree that I'm not interested in a Mora fight either. But I still picture the Oscar who fought epic battles with Quartey (one of my favorite fights of all time) and Vargas, and the ARSE wuppin of Mayorga, and the great technical battle with Whittaker. I mean the guy is a legend plain and simple.
John (miami)
Danchovies, why are people so down on BHop vs Pavlik. I think this was a dumb and dangerous fight for Pavlik to pick up. BHop has a good chance.
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
Sure, BHop has a good chance. People are down because they think the FIGHT will not be very good.
Jeff (cincinnati)
Is Ender Cherry - Tim Bradley official yet?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
Yes. Sept. 13 on the Campbell-Guzman undercard.
Matt (Buffalo, NY)
DTM - I see that Tarver/Dawson found a home in Las Vegas for their 10/10 matchup. Is the Palms Pearl Theatre a good place to watch a fight? And do you know when tickets are going on sale?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
The Palms theater is awesome for fights. I was there a couple of years ago for a ShoBox card and it's perfect. NO bad seats. Everything is close to the ring. Just a sweet place. Not sure about tickets.
Andres (Chula Vista, CA)
When is Devon Alexander fighting again?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Ask Don King.
Matt(Mtl,Qc)
I think Sergio Martinez is a dangerous fight for the LC, agree or disagree?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Very dangerous.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
I'm no Forrest fan, but for everyone's sake, I will be rooting for him in the rematch with Mora.
Dennis (Miami, Fl)
hey dan, if manny doesn't reconsider. and mora loses. what are the chances of oscar fighting cotto in december??
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
I think they diminish.
JQ (Roswell, NM)
Danstradamus, your prediction for who takes over half of the chat subject matter for the years following DLH's retirement?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Whether Oscar will unretire.
Andrew (Buffalo)
So Lamon Brewster is coming back...what are your thoughts??
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Too bad. Lamon is a nice guy but his window is closed and he's had eye injuries. Your eyes are not something to mess with.
Brooks (Cleveland)
In my opinion the bottom line for Oscar's next fight is this: a Pac-man/Oscar fight or a Margarito/Oscar fight is a must buy while a Mora/Oscar fight is a must wait to watch the replay on HBO . . . I think the Contender angle is overblown . . . If it was that big of a show it would still be on network TV. I'm not ripping on Mora, I think he is good, just not exciting to watch.
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
You're one of the smarter Freaks.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
How many Ricky Hatton's are there? I think I heard two.
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Tom, sorry to break this to you but... there's only one Ricky Hatton.
JD, Saratoga NY
I gotta tell ya, at the end of the day I believe Manny will come to his senses and take the fight that will make him 3-5X more money and will make him an even bigger legend.
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
I hope you are right.
Quota for LC references
I have been reached. Enough.
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He usually only gets one mention per chat. Two days after a great knockout win, he gets as many as I want him to get.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, Great work on the DLH negotiations this week. Any word if Pechanga is going to host the Julio\Gamboa\Angulo fights on October 4th?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Yes, Pechanga is the site of Oct. 4 tripleheader on HBO.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Can you think of a fighter more polarized than DLH? I don't know anyone who is indifferent to him.
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
There's this other guy, what's his name? F**** M********* J*.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
I recently heard Ricky was walking along... but I didn't remember what he was doing while walking
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Singing a song dude.
Oscar De La Hoya
I will fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito, as long as it's Cotto.
Chris (Highlands, NJ)
Danabolic Freakazoid, Any news on when the Steelhammer - Povetkin fight will take place?
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
Nothing done, but there has been some talk that maybe Dec. 13.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Wow thats a good triple header, and it's in Pechanga, I might to cath that one live.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
I am considering making the trip.
Oscar De La Hoya
Oh, and I won't fight a Puerto Rican out of respect for my wife. Other than these stipulations, I will fight the winner of Cotto/Margarito
Milk Carton
I dont want Winky any more!! He is asking for a cut 70-30 split of my profits, and options on my next 3 milk cartons!
Steve (NJ)
so winner of LOVE CHILD vs MARTINEZ also become the mandatory for MORA vs FORREST winner?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
The winner will be the WBC's interim titleholder and thereby, the mandatory. But if the winner of Mora-Forrest 2 doesn't fight him, the winner will become the titleholder and the Mora-Forrest 2 winner will be stripped.
Pat (West Seneca)
Any word on Fast Eddie Chambers and his next opponenet?
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
Nothing set yet, but there is a purse bid for a fight between Chambers and Malik Scott as dicated by the USBA. Doesn't mean the fight will happen though because one of them might not be interested in taking that fight.
Oscar De La Hoya
I won't fight a Mexican, except for Sergio Mora.
Mike (Chicago)
Is Deontay Wilder a legitimate American pro heavyweight prospect? Or is it too early to get excited? His story is definitely very marketable
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I think he has tremendous potential in the pros based on his size, punching power and his story.
Joe: San Francisco, CA
Will "Whether Oscar unretire" questions outnumber the amount of "Can Mike Tyson still win a title" questions?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Yes.
Don (Buffalo)
Since when did Manny start taking Career advice from JMM and Nacho Beristein?
Raymond (Baltimore)
Carlos DANtana, which fight would gross more? DLH-Margarito, or DLH-PacMan??
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Oscar-Manny. Easily.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Dan, I hate to break it to everyone... but I just checked whitepages.com and there are actually 10 Ricky Hatton's residing in the U.S.
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Manny Pacquaio (channeling Roy Jones)
60-40 and I'll whoop your ...
Oscar De La Hoya
And when it comes down to it, I don't really want to fight Sergio Mora.
SEAN (DC)
I found it interesting that FNF and WNF had almost a carbon copy in the main event. Both your boy(AHH the love child, as he was repeatedly called) and Cloud need to work on their defense and stamina.
Sean Richmond VA
Do tell Freak Knight, the tales of the Bat Phone....
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
No. But I did go see Dark Knight this week with my wife and we saw it on the IMAX screen, What a great movie.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Please tell me the Bruce Seldon fight on the schedule is a mistake. How old is he now?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
Sorry, bro. He's on the sked. I think he is 145.
Marc (Malden, MA)
So Dan, if you were Mora and you beat Forrest, would you be willing to have your title stripped, in order to fight DLH?
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
In the immortal words of our broadcast hero: DEFINITELY.
Mark (Ottawa, Canada)
Is there any chance of Oscar fighting Forrest if he beats Mora?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
You never know, but I doubt it. It is a fight Vernon has always wanted. They were Olympic teammates but Vernon still would love that payday.
Guero Chitown
Soto vs Pacman?? i like it..a lot a ppl dont know about soto..i think he is almost like a smaller margarito...hes long, tall, strong, hell of a chin, and swings wide. i think manny is in for a beating...its will be a war..what u think dan? soto by TKO late rounds??
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
I think Soto would have a great chance to win, which is why it is so stupid -- yes, STUPID -- of Manny to turn down the Oscar fight. He could lose to Soto for maybe $3 million or lose to Oscar for maybe $15 million. And he also has a decent chance to beat Oscar. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Manny is making Allan Green look like genius.
Rick, Marina , Ca
For some reason this DLH looking for an opponent in Dec story is starting to remind of the Brett Farve fiasco.
Joel Julio
Thanks Dad!!!
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
The Mora negotiations have to be a ploy. Oscar's smart enough to know that Forrest is at least even money to win the rematch and leave Oscar with even fewer options and leverage.
Peter (NYC)
I'd have a lot more respect for DLH if he just came out and said "I'm not fighting Margarito because I don't want to leave the ring for the last time in a body bag."
Tarz (Havertown, PA)
D-Raf have you been watching any of the Olympics besides boxing and if so what is your favorite event?
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
I've been watching a lot of it. All of the boxing, the Team USA basketball games. And I have gotten caught up in Phelps' quest and I even watched some gymnastics last night.
Boba Fett
Put Winky Wright in the cargo hold.
Keith H (Seattle, WA)
Oscar, remember the words of the immortal Ric Flair: "To be The Man, you have to beat The Man." Sergio Mora is NOT The Man.
RAM (Cebu City, Philippines)
Why Dela Hoya not picking Cotto in his last fight? Cotto is still a credible fighter even he lost to Margarito. Cotto still have alot of followers.
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Because he just got knocked out. Why would you pick Cotto who got knocked out instead of the guy who knocked him out? Makes no sense.
JQ (Roswell, NM)
Danquilizer, my boss keeps walking by expecting me to hand him something he asked for over an hour ago and I can't stop reading the chat, I think it has trapped my mind. Is this normal freak behavior?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
In the immortal words of our broadcast hero: Absolutely.
Aaron (West Fargo, ND)
Great job by NBC with the boxing broadcast team of Atlas, Papa, and Grey! Now if only they could continue this team and get some primetime boxing gigs to showcase boxing again.
glenn (Morris Plains, NJ)
What prospects do you see coming out of the Olympics?...there's a Ukrainian Flyweight (probs would bulk up as a pro) who impressed me, otherwise, with a scoring system that encourages boxers to draw fouls...not much else except for the Ecudorian who got screwed by the Chinese who were holding and running and got no penalty in what was a 1 point fight. Poor Teddy almost gave up the ghost on that one.
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Matvey Koborov from Russia, who is a 165-pounder, looked outstanding in his first fight. He is favored to win gold. The guy from Ghana who got robbed badly the other day (his name escapes me) looked terrific and should have won. Has a great pro style. Those are two guys who jump to mind.
R!
Has the Andre Ward vs Brian Vera fight at the Oakland Arena been confirmed??
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
No, it is not happening. The Bat Email informed me earlier today that Ward has suffered some sort of injury -- not sure what -- and will be out the rest of the year.
josephrodrigue5163, San Antonio
Danimal, here's a hypothetical situation with you once again as matchmaker: Say Pacman signs to fight Soto, Mora loses to Forrest, DLH moves back his fight date, and then Hatton loses to Paulie. Assuming F_________er stays retired, where the hell does DLH go from there? Who would YOU sign for that final fight?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
He could still fight Manny in May if he beat Soto.
Neal Joliet, IL
I apologize if you have already addressed this but here goes: Oscar has never really ducked anyone, and that is to his credit. However, a Sergio Mora fight is not a dangerous fight and I think it would do slightly fewer buys than a Margarito fight albeit not much less. You said the Margarito fight is not possible, but I think that's because Oscar won't make it so. It's too bad that the biggest event of the 4th quarter will be such an unappealing fight
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
The entire reason Margarito-Oscar isn't going to happen is because Oscar doesn't want it. Margarito would take the fight in two seconds.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
How DOES scoring for olympic boxing work?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Nobody really knows.
Sasha (NY, NY)
Dan, Are you as sexy as you sound in this chat?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Sexier.
bill (carmel, ny)
oscar seems to be ending his career the same way he ended the trindad fight.
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Ouch.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
I know it sounds strange but Manny should be more like Floyd and just make the fight happnen! Last time I checked 15 was greater than 3.
JD, Saratoga NY
I am a lawyer and if I represented my clients the way Manny's representation has represented him, i'd be dis-barred...i'm really not kidding.
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Manny's team has been an atrocity.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
Wow, and the post of the day goes to BILL from Carmel, NY......
Paul (Germantown, MD)
Dan, am I the only guy who thinks joan guzman is gonna run circles around campbell and explode onto the scene?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
No, I have heard that from plenty of other Freaks.
Jim (LA)
What should we look for in Olympic boxing to tell who has a "pro style"?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
You want to see fighters who come forward, who work the body, who can mix it up inside and be physical.
Matt G. (Chicago, IL)
Danno, I don't think Oscar's situation has been covered enough in this chat.
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
It is not my fault that like 95% of the questions and comments in queue today are related to it.
John (NY,NY)
You seem confident that Margarito would take the fight but what about the split? 20-80? 30-70?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Whatever it is, it is. Margarito and Arum would make big money. I do not think it would be a problem at all to make the fight if Oscar wanted to make it happen.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Is it me, or is Povetkin going to get smashed by Wlad?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
It's not you.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
No love for the womens beach volleyball?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
I did catch a little this morning.
Todd (Florence, SC)
Dan--So, Margarito's team turned down $4 million for a fight with Williams. How much would he likely receive to face Clottey? I would think it'd be quite a bit less than that.
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Much less.
Paul (Germantown, MD)
Does Calzaghe really have to further prove himself by fight Pavlik? He's getting a lot of crap lately for that
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Of course not. Would we all love to see it? Sure. But if Joe beats Roy and retires, so be it and I hope he enjoys his retirement. Joe doesn't have to fight Pavlik if he doesn't want to.
Jackson (IA)
Margarito seems like the type of guy that would fight Oscar for twenty bucks and a free steak at the MGM...
josephrodrigue5163, San Antonio
D$$, just booked my room in Houston for $49 :), and bought my tix for Diaz vs. Katsidis. I'm stoked! Can we expect a RAD that night? I get comp wi-fi!
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
Since I am not going to be at the fight, there is a good chance of that.
Neal Joliet, IL
So HBO pays all that money for the Forbes sparring session and is rewarded with........Sergio Mora.
Steve (Jersey City, NJ)
Dan, I will one of the millions and millions of fans hoping that the Latin Fake loses to Forrest.
Buddy (Amherst)
Dan - if there was more than 1 Ricky Hatton, would one of them take a fight with Oscar?
Eddie (The PG, ILLINOIS)
Oscar doesnt want to fight a Puerto Rican, Mexican, or any other race on this planet! I'm a huge fan, but give us what we deserve.. He said that he wanted to give back to his fans and thats why he fought Stevie Forbes... Thats not giving back. We want a Margs or Pacman fight! make it happen. I like the comment earlier about going 60-30 split with the winner taking the other 10%- Good Job Danno
Scott (Ogden, UT)
Dan, you may banish me for this if you want but here it goes. I will be furious if DLH fights Mora instead of Margs or even Pac-Man because it just shows he wants money more than giving fans a real boxing match worth watching. For 49.95 or whatever they will charge I want to see him fight a legitimate dangerous opponent and not the "Latin Fake" who DLH knows is an easy match-up for him!
Armando - Nj
Dan - you attend many live fights which celebs sometimes attend - who was the hottest female celeb that you were awed to see up close?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
I sat about 10 feet from Pamela Anderson at a fight once.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Any chances of a Margarito-Clottey/Williams-Collazo doubleheader November 1, with the winners fighting down the road?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Both fights could happen in November but definitely not on the same card.
Bob (newark, nj)
how sad would it be for oscar to end his career against 2 contender "bums", I mean Alums...so much for going out on top.
Adam (Woodland Hills, CA)
Dan Man - Do you think that Oscar's hard line stems from the bad blood of Manny signing with Golden Boy and then giving back the "suitcase"?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
I have thought of that. He could be trying to stick it to Manny. I think they should fight and the winner should get paid in cash in a briefcase.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, I know it's a few weeks away but do you think Calderon handles Cazares much easier this time?
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
I don't know about "much easier," but I do think Calderon wins again.
Adam (San Diego)
Dan, Since Oscar loves to fight Contender alums, why doesn't he apply for the show? I got a feeling they would accept him.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Why doesn't Oscar just fight Peter Manfredo?
Jackson (IA)
To all of you whining about Oscar...don't worry. There's no way he ends his career against Mora. Remember, he could still fight Mora, and then have a REAL farewell fight for Cinco de Mayo next year. I mean, it's been his last fight for about 5 years now, right?
Oscar De La Hoya
I just got a call from Margarito. He said he would fight me for free. I told him no.
Silv (NY, NY)
I'm convinced that Manny's 'refusal' is outright posturing and the fight will be made - his management isn't dumb, but they want Manny to receive equal footing in the fight and not appear as if he's being 'lucky' to fight Oscar.
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
I sort of suspect you are right.
Rich (Stamford, CT)
Since all we've discussed in today's chat is Oscar, does this mean his next fight will be the one to really save boxing?
JP (Columbus, OH)
Dan - did Rau'shee Warren get robbed?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
He probably should have been up in the fight, but he messed up by not fighting at all for most of the last round. Fighters fight. He didn't. It shows you how horrible the system is that a guy would blow a chance for a gold medal because of a stupid scoring system that encourages guys to stink it out and run. I have no sympathy for him at all.
Antonio Margarito
I just got my first big win and everybody thinks I am the new pound for pound king. I love fickle fight fans with no memory or sense!!!
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, Before you go, will you please explain what's going on with Linares vacating?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
He's moving up to 130. Pretty simple.
T.O. (Oxnard CA)
Why hasn't HBO announced the ppv buys for Marg-Cotto? Leads me to think they didn't do well, as HBO always announces ppv buys when they do well, as you said.
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
It's not up to HBO to announce anything. It can only be done with the promoter's permission. Arum didn't want to do an official release, but he has told several reporters the numbers which have been backed up by HBO.
Brett Favre (New York)
Dan, I'm going to retire after this season, but then consider another comeback in the summer. Perhaps instead of coming back to football, I could fight DLH.
Nate (Seattle, WA)
D$$$, help me out here...it seems that ALOT of people think that Joe is just gonna run right through RJJ. It's like hes already won the fight, chalk it up! I disagree and can't wait for Roy's hand to be raised. Then we can stop this non-sense of Pavlik vs. Joe!
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
I happen to think Roy has a great shot to win the fight.
Tarz (Havertown, PA)
Two hours and counting for you on this chat D-Raf! You are putting all the other ESPN writers to shame!
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
This is normal. We chat for two hours or more every week.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
What about this scenario: ODH is walking to the ring to fight Mora when all of a sudden Margarito comes from out of the crowd knees Mora in the face and hits him with the pedigree. And since Mora can't fight, Oscar is force to fight Margarito HELL IN A CELL!!!! problem solved!
Aaron Rodgers
I will take 30/70 to fight Bret Favre
Jeff (Winnipeg)
Does Calzaghe fade from "best ever in the division" talk if he loses to Jones? He hasn't had too many great fights that I recall; mostly a bunch of over-hyped and over-aged guys. thoughts
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
Not at all. They are fighting at 175, not 168.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Where do you see Demetrius Andrade campaigning as a pro? Wouldn't he have trouble making welterweight at the pro limit?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Junior middle I would guess.
Bill (Rockville)
Why doesn't Oscar tell Manny that he can either have the 70-30 split with 8 ounce gloves and fighting at 147, or a 65-35 split with 10 ounce gloves fighting at 150?
Luis ( Modesto, Ca.)
Cotto is a quitter and he is in your top 10 P4P? Second knock down watch the replay...he quit. True champions do not quit.
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
True chatters aren't so stupid. You're banned.
Justin
Enough about Brett Favre. This is a boxing chat! Now back to Oscar and his business decisions.
GM(Milwaukee.WI)
Dan, some people are saying that Joe C Wales decision to retire after the Jones fight is his way of "ducking" Pavlik which I disagree with. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
I agree with you 100%.
Tarz (Havertown, PA)
Seriously Luis I would love to see you battle in the rink with the Tornado for that long and be able to even stand up!
Berndawg
Adios Luis. You've lost your mind.
Pete (Montreal, Canada)
Ban Luis!!!
harry
oscar larios our new wbc titlist...only in america...errr wait
Dan Rafael (2:10 PM)
What a pathetic joke that situation is. Don't even get me started.
Brian (Austin, Texas)
Kessler/Pavlik I think would be a very intriguing fight, how do you see that one happening?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
That's a great matchup. I suppose it is possible down the road a little.
Nate (Seattle, WA)
In response to Luis (Modesto, CA.): Cotto was being smart and knowing that he faced serious and possibly career ending punishment if he tried to gut it out. He showed enough heart by going as far as he did. Did you see the slow-mo replay of the blood he spat out? But in earnest, he did shake his head at his corner after the second knee, so it was his decision not to continue, not his corners'. I call that smarts, not quitting!
GM(Milwaukee.WI)
I would say Luis is dumb as a box of rocks but thats insulting to rocks. Evangilista Cotto was already up on the apron before he got to his feet and he still had a round left. Why let him get ruined by being severely hurt. Enjoy Luis Banishment!!
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, explain to everyone that just because DLH doesn't fight Margo that doesn't mean that he's been ducking anybody.
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
I've been doing that for weeks.
Kieran (Parents' House, England)
Hey dude, What's up? What am I missing?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
A lot of Oscar discussion.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Since all the talk is of DLH. How does he matchup w/ Sugar Ray Robinson ,Leonard and Hearns at 147lb?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
Gets knocked out by all three of them.
Habs (Phoenix, AZ)
Speaking of Cotto... he was swallowing blood from his broken nose from round two on. I once tried to play a rugby game with a broken nose and started vomiting in less than 5 minuets. Cotto is a warior! Period! Get bent Luis!
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Banishment is back baby, damn was he hungry!!!
Miguel Cotto
I will take a 0-100 split to get a shot at Luis
Christian, Miami
I hope all the Pacquiao/DLH fight haters are waking up to reality, when they realize we may end up getting stuck w/ Mora/DLH as the alternative
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Emmanuel Nwodo is on FNF in a couple weeks. What is the over/under on how many times they will show him getting knocked out by Ding?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
At least three times.
Carlos (Funky Town, TX)
If the DLH vs Mora fight happens Vernon Forrest will have all the fans on his side for the rematch. Forrest could be the one to save us from DLH vs Mora.
Joe, Indiana
I vote for ODLH vs. Peter McNeeley
Rich (Stamford, CT)
Hey Dan, thanks for chatting. Since HBO has passed do you think Showtime or even Versus might pick up Haye's fight in November for US television?
Dan Rafael (2:17 PM)
I have not heard of anyone else being interested. I hold out hope someone will pick it up, but it should depend on who he fights.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Dan-O: I can't find a good site which tracks the US Olympic fighters in terms of their results and schedule. The ESPN - Olympics site is not great. Any thoughts? Also who is left besides Yanez, Wilder, and Andrade? Thanks!
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
I actually think our ESPN Olympics site is terrific. I use it every day to help me catalog the DVDs I am making of the tournament.
Steven (Boston)
D$$, Will you please ban me...so I don't have to hear any more about DLH-Mora!
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
No, you are going to be forced to stay here and talks about Oscar, Manny and Mora as long as I am. Request denied.
Bert Sugar
I can't wait to make a "This Week in Boxing History" regarding the De La Hoya/Mora fight. That has "classic" written all over it!
Biz (Philly)
I'll be at the Pavlik-Hopkins fight. Any news on the undercard?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Right now it looks like maybe Marco Antonio Rubio in a fight, maybe Gerry Penalosa in a title defense. Really still up in the air.
ESPN News
Just in, Oscar has began negotiations with Jeff Fenech after his DOMINATING Points victory over the 50 yr old Azumah Nelson!
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI
How did you like Galarza's KO of Crayton on WNF? Caryton looked like Frankenstein when he was out on his feet.
Dan Rafael (2:21 PM)
I thought it was terrific. I was impressed with Galarza. I was at his last fight in June, which was off tv on the Abraham-Miranda 2 undercard and he looked good there too. I think with a couple of more fights, he would be a perfect kid to be on ShoBox.
Brian (Austin, Texas)
Future plans for Juan Manuel Lopez?
Dan Rafael (2:21 PM)
Instead of being on the Pavlik-Hopkins card, it looks like he will fight on his own card in Puerto Rico on Oct. 4.
Nick (NYC)
Dan, what's up with dissing the "Iron Boy" and dropping him in your P4P rankings? The guy has dominated his weight class for years - one of the all time greats and surefire future HOF. If he beats Casares again, will he re-enter your top 10?
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
I didn't diss the Iron Boy. I love the Iron Boy. But he was 10th and he dropped to 11th because Margarito went into the top 10 for obvious reasons.
Steve (Boston)
You denied my ban request? This means war! So...Why are you always talking crap about MMA. And...is Mike Tyson unretiring?
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
You still have to stay.
Nick
Allot of people was giving Oscar crap for fighting Pac-Man, saying it was a circus act, etc. Now they're shouting because the fight might not happen. what the heck?
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
Oscar-Pacquiao is a fascinating fight and it would be a good fight. I think those who initially hated it are coming around to it and would much rather see it than Mora.
Ronak (NY)
Any other bouts confirmed for the Calzaghe v Jones Jr undercard?
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
If Kotelnik defends his 140 belt coming up, he'll defend against Salita on the undercard.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
My Varela bobblehead is AWESOME!!!! It keeps bouncing right back up!!!!!
Drew (Philly)
Dan, Being that you agree that the best fight for DLH is Margo...what do you think the percentage chance is that we get that fight?
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
The Margarito is the best fight for the fans, not Oscar.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Do you think Cloud is ready to take on a top 10 light heavyweight? I think Golzales was probably a top 15'er.
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
Sure. I'd love to see him fight someone like Chris Henry or Diaconu.
g(atl)
Pac-DLH is a throw back fight. People put too much stock in weight differential. Fighters in the past routinely jumped weight classes.
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
Exactly what I wrote in the initial blog in which Larry Merchant proposed the fight in October 2007.
Jason (Seattle)
Luis from Modesto probably thinks Hearns quit against Hagler - he was just LAYING there while the ref counted!
Steve (Boston)
What's a guy got to do to get banned around here? Promote their own fighters? Oh wait, nevermind Marc... BTW. Do you think John Ruiz is a top 10 P4P? Is there a notebook this week?... Who fights tonight on FNF?...
Dan Rafael (2:30 PM)
You're staying.
Norberto (Aguada, PR)
dan you once mentioned that the best fighter in the world was a guy that fought only amateur, can you give us the name again to see if we have a chance to see him at the games? thanks
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
The guy you are thinking of was Rigondeaux, the Cuban bantamweight who won gold in Athens. He was tremendous. He is not on this year's team because of how he tried to defect at the Pan Am Games.
Nick (Seattle)
Can someone explain to me how the Olympic Committee was able to clone Doug Tucker 5 times and get him to Beijing to score these bouts?
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
Well said.
Greg (Dallas, TX)
D$$, Please pinch me and tell me DLH-Mora is all just a bad dream!!
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
Only if you are Pamela Ewing from Dallas.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
One of my friends said Oscar should fight Cory Spinks. I laughed hysterically. Was there any other response then that?
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
No, you did the right thing.
Brian (New York)
Ever see those nify corner stools they're using in the olypics before? Where did those things come from?
Dan Rafael (2:37 PM)
I noticed those. They're great and they should use them in pro boxing.
Steve (Boston)
AARGH! You're a cruel, cruel man, Dan. But you can't make me pay $50 to watch that DLH-Mora crap! I'd rather someone tape my eyelids open and force me to watch the old Tyson/Bonecrusher Smith fight!
Eric (Columbus, OH)
Sure, Oscar's public comments about the Margs fight point to undeniable personal hypocrisy, but IMO people are acting like they want to see him get hurt rather than see a competitive fight. I mean, who gives DLH a serious chance in that fight? Aren't the fights that mean the most, that are the best for boxing (besides amount of press generated), the ones we don't know who'll win going in? That's why I was kinda into DLH-Pacman.
Ronak (NY)
Whats next for Edison Miranda?
Dan Rafael (2:39 PM)
Probably to make some more excuses.
Rick, Marina,Ca
Alright then Dan and the freaks, it's lunch time, I really hope DLH ends up fighting Pacman for the record instead of Mora, although I perfer Margo overall, we'll have to wait and see. Peace
Tim haverstraw , NY
You dont seem as high on Andre Berto as i am. He's relatively untested but he does have an olympic backround. He reminds me of Floyd but actually means business in the ring. I think he should rank higher than 8th in the power rankings.
Dan Rafael (2:40 PM)
I'm a huge Berto fan. I named him prospect of the year a couple of years ago and have followed him since he was in the Olympics. He's also a class kid. BUT he is ranked where he is ranked because he has not yet defeated a notable opponent.
Justin
I don't know what is more interesting to me as a boxing fan. Steve trying to get banned, or the Oscar discussion.
Patrick NM
any chance of a torres holt rematch?
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
Sure. I am hopeful it happens. Arum has talked about doing it.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Monster props for for your Pam Ewing reference! A classic and you have outdone yourself again. Not sure how many of our chatters undersood it...
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
You have to be a certain age to get it.
Justin
The stools are about the only thing Olympic boxing has to offer the pros.
Michael (Toronto)
DTM, out of curiosity, when was the last time you spoke with the Love Child in person?
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
At a fight in Vegas last year I believe. Nicest kid in the world.
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
And, may add, Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Jonesy (NC)
They are going to roll Ramon Campos out on a PPV? Seriously?
Dan Rafael (2:46 PM)
That's what it looks like -- against Julio Garcia on the 9/13 ppv. Kind of sad.
Kyle (Indy)
The olympic stools are nice, but the scoring is like a stool sample!!!
I have never received so many Pam Ewing searches at once! There must be a boxing chat going on somewhere.
Brian (Austin, Texas)
154's future looks pretty violent with guys like Angulo, Kirkland, and Love Child making names for themselves, don't you think?
Dan Rafael (2:49 PM)
Agreed. The top of the division isn't so interesting, but there is exciting younger guys in the division like you mentioned. And, even though he didn't look so good the other night, add in Joe Greene to the mix.
Dan Rafael (2:49 PM)
And even John Duddy if he really moves down in weight.
Norberto (Aguada, PR)
in your opinion, wich one the chavez's sons is worst omar or jr?
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
Based on what I have seen Omar can't fight a shred.
Dan Rafael (2:52 PM)
If that had been a pro fight, Wilder would have knocked the guy out. I agree. He looked very good in his first bout.
Frank (Brooklyn)
I laughed out loud when they gave you a shout out on Wed. Night Fights for dubbing Joel Julio "The Love Child"...I'm just curious how did the name come about?
Dan Rafael (2:53 PM)
I had been excited about Julio as a prospect when I saw him back on a Telemundo swing bout several years ago. I mentioned him a few times in chats, he made it to TV a little and to show my excitement about him I joked that he was my love child in a chat. It became a running thing every week and sort of stuck.
Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)
So psyched for Kessler - Haussler.....no, couldn't keep a straight face.....
Dan Rafael (2:53 PM)
Total garbage of a fight.
Dave (Philadelphia PA)
Dan! I've been following the chats for some time, and according to some of the comments I've seen from the freaks, you may or may not be The Batman... which leads to my question: if you are in fact The Batman, now that you've taken care of the Joker and Two-Face, I think you should use all your powers and abilities to get Manny and Oscar back to the negotiation table and get themselves a deal!
Ronak (NY)
DLH v Mora? Come on, i have to pay 50 bucks for that garbage?
Dan Rafael (2:55 PM)
You don't have to. If it's made, just don't buy it if you don't like it.
Eric (Columbus Ohio)
What does Oscar gain from fighting Mora in his finale? Do you agree that he would gain more respect losing to Margarito in a great fight rather than beating Mora?
Dan Rafael (2:55 PM)
I would agree.
Dan Rafael (2:56 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Enjoy FNF tonight and talk to you next week. Peace.
