Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:01 AM)
Good morning everyone! Nearing the home stretch in fantasy baseball, so let's get to your questions, help you to a championship!
Pete (NJ)
Is Rauch now the everyday closer for ARI? I could use the saves and will pick him up if he is.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:01 AM)
"Everyday closer"? No. But he's absolutely the handcuff, the No. 2 option, to Brandon Lyon, and Lyon hasn't been all that stellar the past month-plus. Rauch needs be owned, but it's still apparently Lyon's job. Handcuff value, however that pertains to your league.
Carlos Quentin (Chicago)
Please explain your lack of respect for me in your list of top keepers.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:04 AM)
Brain fart, maybe? No, seriously, I probably was a little down on Quentin, but I do think kids like this come a little more back to earth after everyone gets accustomed to their presence. I don't want to knock the guy, he's a good keeper, but I'm not ready to say certain top, say, 40 status, not yet. I still think of him as more an annual .280-.290 hitter, 30-homer potential, approaches 100 RBIs. This is just a great year for him, and I say he regresses a little more toward the mean in 2009, as many breakout types like these tend to do. And I'm prepared for the possibility I'm wrong, but I think a conservative approach is warranted here.
Adam (A2)
I'm well ahead this week in ERA and WHIP...would starting Greinke @ CLE be a threat to those two categories today? Thanks!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:05 AM)
Eh, not necessarily a threat. I'm starting to put together the numbers for next week's Forecaster, and Greinke is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in his past four starts, and the Indians are hardly a threatening offense. I'd say he's worth going for, except if you're in dire straits with an innings cap (and I'd hope few people are at that point right now).
Ehren (Ramsey, NJ)
Hi Tristan, please pick one MI to carry me through the play-offs: Stewart, Lowry, S. Drew
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:07 AM)
Well, I have to assume that's Jed Lowrie, and if it is, I think he's a little to empty statistically outside of batting average and runs scored, which aren't necessarily stable categories for him, to pick him. So leave him out, it's Ian Stewart versus Stephen Drew, which screams "matchups plays" to me. If I have to pick I'm going Stewart. Love what he's done of late, love the ballpark, love the supporting cast. But I bet there will be weeks -- think Rox on the road for six games -- where Drew is a better play. I just see more use from Stewart as an overall guy.
Steve (Toronto)
With Morrow returning on Sept. 1, would he be a better play than Pedro or Anibal? Thanks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:08 AM)
Brandon Morrow is going to be a very interesting player to track this September, in his new role as a starter. I won't expect the kind of impact Joba Chamberlain had when he switched to starting. That's asking a lot. I'd call Morrow just what I said he was, a "watch-him" player, not a guy you trust overall. Bad team, new role, those are risk factors. So I'd say not over Pedro Martinez, maybe over Anibal Sanchez but I bet even Sanchez offers you more useful matchups in September than Morrow does.
Hank (Michigan)
Thoughts on starting Greinke or Baker tonight?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:09 AM)
It's Greinke. I don't feel great about Scott Baker at the Angels and John Lackey.
Jerome (NYC)
Safe to drop H. Street? How many saves do you think he'll get from here on out?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:10 AM)
Yes, and none. Brad Ziegler is a good enough option in the role for now, and Joey Devine seems like he's being groomed to take over in 2009. I have a strong feeling that Mr. Street will be in another uniform come next Opening Day.
Johnny Cueto
Will I be limited innings this year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:11 AM)
That had been a consideration as I was compiling the usage numbers for today's "Sixty Feet, Six Inches," but the numbers didn't support there being a great level of concern for Cueto. It's possible, with the Reds out of the race, but I'm thinking if he's shut down, it's mid-September at best, and that means maybe only one or two missed turns of the rotation. I wouldn't worry too much, and besides, it's not like he's high-impact enough to matter if you lose a couple end-of-year starts.
Andrew (NY)
Will Jensen Lewis be the closer for the rest of year? Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:12 AM)
Sure looks like it. In that bullpen, though, anything can happen, but he has to be considered the odds-on-favorite to get at least 80 percent of the team's remaining saves. Maybe 90.
Steve (Pittsburgh, PA)
Is Cano finally droppable? I'm getting very tired of his poor hitting. Would you drop him for Alexei Ramirez or Ian Stewart?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:14 AM)
It's amazing to think I have to consider this possibility, but Robinson Cano sure seems like the poster boy for the Yankees' disappointing season -- yes, it is a disappointing season, period, you can't make me a case that it's not compared to the expectation -- doesn't he? My gut says I just can't let a Cano go. Too much of a second-half history. But you know, I wouldn't laugh at the idea, and if you're in a spot where you need production right now, grabbing Ramirez instead cannot be considered crazy. Like I always say, stats today are sometimes better than possible stats tomorrow, and that's especially true the deeper we get into a season.
Jamaal (Marlton, NJ)
Tristan,...Jimmy Rollins is killing me! Are these the type of useless performances that I can expect for the remainder of this season? Thanks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:15 AM)
Another frustrating player. Again, I have a hard time giving up on a guy with the track record he has. And I'd say Rollins needs to be retained more than Cano does. I still say he turns in a decent September, but he's not a top-25 player even then, period. Think more like top-100 value.
Andrew (NY)
Thoughts on Chris Dickerson? Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:16 AM)
Good speed, decent pop but inconsistency. Batting average will be a concern, but matchups status might be the smartest move with him. Hey, at least he'll get the chance to play regularly against righties. There are good matchups to be had, NL-only owners.
JC (Highland Mills, NY)
Hey tristan,Would you start Zambrano against the Reds today? Thanks,
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:16 AM)
Carlos Zambrano has made me look very bad all season, except for that brief DL stint. So I can't sit him, regardless of matchup. Too good.
Bob (Mahwah)
Gordon, McLouth or Mora from here to the end of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:18 AM)
I still believe most in my boy Nate McLouth. Good homer and speed potential.
Andrew (NY)
Is Matt Joyce for real?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:18 AM)
Matt Joyce is such a good matchups play, and that is very much all that he is. He kills righties, plays regularly against them, so he's a guy I give the thumbs up except against lefties or very tough righties (think Roy Halladay types). That's a useful player, without a doubt.
Andrew (NY)
Is Ian Stewart the real deal? Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:19 AM)
I kept hearing Todd Helton comparisons while he was rising the minor-league ranks, and while I think that's a bit optimistic since people really think of Helton as what he was about a decade ago, a "lite" version of that isn't a crazy expectation long term. I bet he's a lot next year what Helton has been the past couple seasons. Good, underrated prospect.
P(Boston)
Why will nobody answer this question? Which 2 rookies are the best keepers out of I.Stewart, Alexei, A.Jones, C.Headley, and D.Price?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:22 AM)
P, the tough thing here is we get thousands of questions per chat, and while I try my best to tackle a healthy number, the realistic thing is one in-depth answer per minute is a good estimate. Sorry if we missed this one, but that's a lot of it, it's a lot to sift through. We do try to help! As for the inquiry, all of those are very interesting keeper candidates. But when I think closely here, David Price is a no-doubt-about-it guy. He could be to next year what Tim Lincecum was to 2007. His upside is that high. And for No. 2, I really think I'd take Alexei Ramirez, if only because he's the player who fills the scarcest position.
Nick (Greenwich,CT )
Do you think Adam Wainwright can help teams in the playoffs? Thanks Tristan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:22 AM)
Sure. I'm a Wainwright fan, though. Admire his talent. Maybe he's more matchups-like than every-start, but I'm optimistic he can finish strong.
David (Los Angeles, CA)
Worth hanging onto Maine?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:23 AM)
Yes, but do understand that the Mets are being careful with the guy. His health issues make him a tad risky, and that's why he's not being shuffled off to the bullpen, where the Mets are seemingly in dire straits. (Al Reyes, sleeper maybe?) I do think Maine can be top-40 starter worthy, though. He's got the talent.
Charlie (Syracuse, NY)
Everytime Aviles goes a couples games without a hit the experts say that he's done and droppable. He then comes back with a monster game like yesterday and gets hot again. What will it take for Aviles to earn some respect?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:25 AM)
Charlie, to be totally frank with you, when have I said that? This kid has done nothing but hit, and my memory in the chats has been I said "ride-him-while-hot," and in no way did I say immediately bail when he turns in a cold game. At this stage, I'd need to see something like a two-week completely-dry spell to say give up. Aviles looks legit. Not a stud, but a guy who doesn't hurt you and can turn in some pretty decent games. I think that's some respect!
Trey (San Diego)
What the heck happened to Cla Meredith?? He had an awesome rookie season with the Pads and now he's been so inconsistent, he'd even been demoted to AAA with an ERA of 3.99!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:26 AM)
Padres fan, Trey? Meredith's problem is that he has a very, very tough time with left-handed hitters, probably his delivery and pitch selection. He's a ground-ball specialist who dominates righties, like Chad Bradford, and those guys have limited value and can be terribly unpredictable fantasy-wise, because you have to use them in specialist roles and frankly, a lot of managers really don't do that good a job of that.
Joshua (Illinios)
Zimmerman and Josh Fields have been two of the most hyped 3B prospects in the past few years, but both have been major disappointments so far. Who do you see projecting to reach their potential and have the better career?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:28 AM)
Let's not bust on Josh Fields, fellow Josh. That was pretty unfair what the White Sox did to him, dumping him to Triple-A for Joe Crede and then not even giving him a real chance to play when Crede got hurt. I still think Fields can be a 25-homer power hitter, even if he might be only a .250-.260 hitter. If you look at it that way long term, I think you'll be fine. His 2009 should be better. As for Ryan Zimmerman, well, he's been hurt. But again, his ceiling isn't a lot higher than his rookie-year numbers, because people rave about his all-around contributions. I tend to think people sometimes overrate guys like this because they forget that defense goes into the rating when you're talking the real game, but for us, defense is irrelevant. Bottom line: If you think of Zimm as a .290-hitting, possible-.300, 20-25-homer power guy long term, I think you're fine. But I doubt he gets a lot better than that.
Greg (Chicago)
Alexei is going play SS next year with since OC contract is up.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:28 AM)
All the more reason to keep him.
James (Austin)
Which combo am I better off having going into the H2H playoffs: Tulo and Cano vs Aviles and I Stewart?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:30 AM)
I think the former. The Rockies still get 18 of their remaining 34 games at home, and Troy Tulowitzki might have the highest ceiling for September of all of these guys.
Jamie Moyer (PA)
I know I'm a million years old, but do I have and fantasy relevance for next year? Top 50 pitcher?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:31 AM)
I am a big Jamie Moyer fan and have been for an awfully long time. No one ever gives the guy credit, he's effectively free in so many leagues and has been in so many seasons, and I see no reason he can't be just about what he has been this year in 2009. Now, when I say "big fan," please understand that doesn't in any way mean "top-100" player. But use Moyer right, play his matchups, etc., and I think you'll be pleased. For instance, he owns the Marlins. He's always starting for me when he's battling them.
Ryan (OKC)
Tristan, are you one that doesnt believe McLouth will be near as good next year? That why he's not on you keeper list?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:33 AM)
Well, let's say that Nate McLouth finishes with, hmmm, a .278 batting average, 28 homers, 18 steals. It's a great season, sure. But I see him being only so-so in batting average, and more ordinary in the past couple months than in his hot-as-heck start. He's close to that list of mine from a few weeks ago, but I just can't justify calling a guy I see as a .270-hitting, 25-homer, 15-steal guy at best a prime keeper. It's just a dangerous strategy.
Wendy (La-La Town!)
Is Greg Maddux going to carry us into the playoffs?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:34 AM)
I love that trade, Wendy. Whether he gets you to the playoffs, that I can't exactly tell, it's going to be a tight, tight race and I still love the Arizona pitching staff. But for fantasy, I think Maddux is a very interesting option for the next month-plus. Nice bump in value, could be like his last stint in La-La Land.
Galen (Montreal)
Back to Lyon and ARI for a second, I find it so frustrating. Lyon has been great in SV opps, but horrible in non SV opps, what are they doing there?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:35 AM)
Mariano Rivera has, too. It's a problem, we can't deny that. My opinion is guys like this need to be able to maintain some consistency from outing to outing, no matter the circumstances. If they can't, it does absolutely affect their value. Bottom line is Lyon needs to pick up his play, because sooner or later you have to think this spills over into an actual save chance. I'm not ready to panic about his value, but he's not close to a top-10 closer in my mind.
Nick (Philly,PA)
do you think i should drop guardado and ziegler for morrow and scherzer??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:36 AM)
Nope. Too much short-term potential and not enough long-term potential (for 2008) to make that worthwhile.
Rich (Solvay, NY)
Hi Tristan,This year and long term...Manny Parra or Josh Johnson? Thanks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:37 AM)
I think at this point I'd probably trust Johnson a little more for this season, and Parra a little more for the long term. Here's the thing: With Parra, it's more of a risk/reward play in the long haul. So maybe they're close in value, but I like to go for the higher-ceiling guy when I'm speculating long term (unless the risk is huge).
Jared (Maryland)
Any work on Hanley Ramirez's thumb injury? They say day-to-day, but how long is day-to-day expected to be? Are the Marlins conceding the wild card and resting this guy for long?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:39 AM)
That's the frustration of the day-to-day injury, you just don't know how many days. The information I have is that X-rays were fine, and he's 50/50 to play on Thursday. That's encouraging to hear. I'd have to assume maybe Ramirez is just out until the weekend, but it's hard to tell. Could play Thursday. Could take a week. Let's just keep our fingers crossed, and I'm sorry there's just nothing more definitive than that.
jed lowrie(boston, mass)
So, I'm only valuable for batting average and runs? In 18 August games, I've scored a measly 8 runs, but have knocked in a whopping 20. What's up with that?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:40 AM)
Point taken. Let's reverse it then, since it's hard in the time allowed to run the statistics like that, he's batting average and RBIs, instead of BA/R's. It's still a bit limited player, and to be totally frank with you, RBIs can actually be a bit flukier a category than runs scored. It's not by a ton, but yes, a little bit more so.
Antonio(miami, FL)
what are your thoughts on Adam Lind? over eithier?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:41 AM)
Well, I like Lind a lot, big fan, think he's going to endure a pretty decent career. I would indeed prefer him to Andre Ethier, especially since that Dodgers cluttered outfield scares the dickens out of me.
Pete (NJ)
Start Moyer against Redding and the Nats tonight?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:41 AM)
Yup!
Gary (Boston)
Pick one keeper please: Quentin, Ichiro, or Peavy?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:42 AM)
No way of knowing the league specs here. Going general keeper rules of thumb, I want best player based off my recent top 100, and that's gotta be Jake Peavy.
Ian Snell (PNC Park)
You buying me?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:43 AM)
A 3.90 ERA in your past five starts. Hmmm, better things could be in store! Still, matchups matchups, that's what I see in store for Mr. Snell. I can't buy all in.
Mark (Redlands, CA)
What's up TC, with the fantasy playoffs looming, am I insane to drop Marcum for Slowey or Johnson (FLA)?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:44 AM)
Not for Kevin Slowey. I think he's the best of this bunch.
Michael (toronto)
Where do you see Bedard next season? Top 20 pitcher?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:45 AM)
Erik Bedard terrifies me. I have to wonder with all his setbacks and slow progression with his injury whether he might require a winter surgery, which could threaten his 2009 status. I've got no specific info on that, just to note, but also enough concern that I can't say "top-20" and feel safe. He'd probably sit around 25th, 30th, or so if I ranked him today.
TOM
who are some September call ups that we should grab now before our other owners do?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:46 AM)
I was looking at a couple of these guys for 60F6I the other day, and David Huff of the Indians, Brad Bergeson of the Orioles and Kala Ka'aihue of the Royals are three deep, deep sleepers I'd keep my eye on.
Mark, Baltimore
If Joe Flacco played baseball, I'd say he was worth a keeper slot for my fantasy baseball squad.Thoughts?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:47 AM)
Uhhhh, no. Nor do I think he warrants one for football, either. Bad QB situation there in Baltimore.
Francisco Liriano (Minny)
Two questions on Jamie Moyer and none for me? Where do I rank among SP's going forward?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:48 AM)
In 60F60I I ranked you 25th among starting pitchers. And I'm very, very encouraged for a huge bounce-back in 2009.
Ted (Baltimore, MD)
Name Game 2009 Season who would you rather have:B Roberts/Vlad or C. Hart/Tulo
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:48 AM)
Latter. The outfielders are almost even, but I feel a little better about how you're filling out the primary Rotisserie categories with the latter duo.
Brad (Newark, DE)
Is P. Maholm going to have his innings limited in September? Would you drop him for B. Myers, who's been just as hot over the last month?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:49 AM)
I don't think so, if only because the workload numbers I ran didn't back up the need to shut Paul Maholm down. That said, I do feel like Brett Myers' ceiling is a bit higher, so it's a move I'd make.
John (Baltimore)
Is Weiters keeper worthy in mixed league? Will he come out blazing next year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:50 AM)
Depends how many keepers you get. I'm in a 12-team, 12-player-plus-five-prospects keeper league, and he's a no-doubt-about-it keeper in the format. Probably would be if it were 12 players, even. He's gonna rake when he reaches Baltimore, mark it down. And I think he's up by no later than, say, June 1 next year. If that late!
Tyler (Vermont)
Hey THC, any top pitchers that you think will tank the rest of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:51 AM)
Well, the first name that pops into my head that terrifies me looking forward is Justin Verlander. I don't have a great feeling about him, especially since he's struggling (or inconsistent) lately and that team has had some brutal luck in the health department. What a disappointing year for Verlander.
Ben (Portland, Me.)
Hey Tristan, who is taking over Clay Buchholz's spot in the Boston rotation now that he got demoted all the way back to AA?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:52 AM)
No one until at least a week from Saturday because off days allow some creative shuffling. And a lot of the reports I've gotten say Tim Wakefield should be ready to claim it by then. So, sorry, Justin Masterson owners, probably not gonna be him.
Michel (Toronto)
Worried about Doc Halladays 130 pitch count from his last start? He faces the dreaded Yankees today. Are you worried about the number of innings he's thrown so far too?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:53 AM)
Not really on either count. I probably would have held him back the extra day, since the Red Sox really represent the stronger competitor. But "Doc" has a great track record against the Yankees, can't ignore that. He's a must-start.
Mike(T.O, Canada)
I traded Ludwick for Drew. Keeper league. Good deal?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:54 AM)
I'd say so. I'm just not a Ryan Ludwick believer in keeper leagues. Good player, sure, but not a "great" keeper.
Jim. Indiana
Wade Davis comparisons? and when does he crack that Rays rotation?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:55 AM)
Short time table, Jim, makes it hard for me to think up the "right" comparison, and I don't want to pick an unfair one. Good description of what he'll be? I'd say No. 3 starter, decent ERA, low threes usually. Reliable guy, not top-10 fantasy option but certainly a top-25 candidate, definite top-40. And that's for the long haul, because I can't see him in that rotation before, say, mid-2009.
Murph (Boston)
Drop the Duke for Myers?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:55 AM)
Yes. I have a terrible feeling Justin Duchscherer is done as an elite contributor for fantasy.
mike ct
Do you think Putz is droppable for a Wheeler or Lewis
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:57 AM)
You can call this crazy if you want, but I think yes, a case can be made. Closers for terrible teams merely have a hard time getting big save totals, and they're painfully inconsistent from week to week. Just a fact. So if I'm choosing here, Jensen Lewis isn't a bad choice. I really think he's locked in enough that he's every bit the value Putz can be looking forward (this year).
Ray (Maine)
Better keeper for next year: Big Z or AJ?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:58 AM)
Ugh, trying to hook me on another bad call on Carlos Zambrano? This isn't a "I got it wrong this year" thing, it has to do entirely with having absolutely no idea where A.J. Burnett will end up this winter. I do think he's leaving Toronto. It's Big Z. Just a little safer as things appear today.
Jay (SD)
On the Wieters question you mention a 5 prospect keeper list. How are those guys defined (players that have not seen the major leagues)?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:59 AM)
Our league's rules allow that any player who has not expired his rookie eligibility (130 ABs, 50 IP) can be kept on the farm. We also use 15 pitching appearances as a cut-off, so that relievers can't sneak on there forever.
Ryan (New Rock)
One more time. Lastings or Fred Lewis? Please THC!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:59 AM)
I like what Lastings Milledge has been doing of late, and will take a chance on his great potential.
Jim. Indiana
Will Sherrill ever Close again with Ray coming back?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:00 PM)
My gut says that the Orioles might very well look to shop George Sherrill this winter, and I do think his ultimate role for 2009 is as a specialist, not a closer. Think a Rafael Perez type. I could see that.
Jason (Cleveland, OH)
I dropped Rickie Weeks for Jed Lowrie. Smart move?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:00 PM)
Only if you need to preserve batting average, I'd think.
Jim. Indiana
Travis Snider?? How good and when is he a starter?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:01 PM)
I like Snider a lot, think he's going to be a fantasy stud with time and believe his career begins sometime around the All-Star break next season. This might be the "next big thing" people are abuzz about in early 2009.
Zack (Arlington, TX)
I worked in Wichita when Kila was in Double-A with the Wranglers... the guy could barely keep his average over .200... Has he really improved that much?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:02 PM)
Apparently. Now, I just want to say, this was pretty much a non-prospect who has merely improved his game this year, so he might not have a high ceiling. Could be the next Shelley Duncan. But it's still a shot worth taking in deep leagues (think AL-only leagues).
jeff (nyc)
as a follow up to your snider question, who is the odd-man-out between Rios, Wells, Lind, and Snider?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:02 PM)
There's time for the Blue Jays to figure that out. And a designated hitter role for one of them -- probably Adam Lind -- to slide into, too.
Brandon Wood (Stuck in AAA)
Will the Angels need to trade me this offseason to have value?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:03 PM)
I'm not optimistic about Wood's future. Way too strikeout prone. Think Dallas McPherson and Andy Marte. Hey, some top prospects simply don't make it. Someone has to disappoint! But I'd say yes, a change of scenery might be warranted here.
Dan (Boston)
Nelson Cruz getting the call this year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:04 PM)
I think so, yes, but he's what, 28? Looking like a Quadruple-A player, though who knows, it is not unthinkable that this guy is a Ryan Ludwick late bloomer. I'm not trying to say "go get the next Ludwick," just saying if Cruz gets the call, he could be an AL-only sleeper. Not a guy to toss aside, even if the Rangers seem to have done so.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:05 PM)
Well, that's all for today. Thanks for all your questions, and sorry again if I couldn't get to yours. Remember, we get thousands of 'em, and try to tackle a good number! Take care everyone...
