Mark Schlabach (7:25 PM)
OK, sorry folks. Cleaning up the mess from the tropical storm. Sorry I'm late.
Ryan: Athens, GA
Regardless of the final record, after two consecutive embarassing performances, Ohio State should be disqualified from having an opportunity to play for the title... or at least against an SEC opponent.
Mark Schlabach (7:27 PM)
Disagree. You can't judge a team from its past performances. This OSU team is loaded with NFL talent. There's a ton of experience and veterans on that squad. Lauriniaitis and Malcolm Jenkins are All-America type players. So are Beanie Wells and Alex Boone. They beat USC, they'll get to Miami.
Waterford Michigan
I am a die hard Michigan fan but am i wrong for thinking Rich Rodriquez's offense just isnt going to work and Michigan has a chance to not make a bowl or am i over doing it abit?
Mark Schlabach (7:27 PM)
I don't think it will happen this year, but once Rich Rod gets in the right kind of players for his offense -- namely a QB -- the Wolverines will be Big Ten contenders again. I think a bowl game would be a heck of an achievement this year.
Chris ( Savannah)
Mark, What are the chances the Georgia Southern upsets UGA between the hedges? GSU did beat App. State last year...
Mark Schlabach (7:28 PM)
Keep dreaming. Georgia Southern is starting as many as seven freshmen on offense. Eight players suspended, including two starters. Chris Hatcher is a great coach, but he's out-manned in this one.
Cedrick (Atlanta Ga.)
After two excellent years of recruiting and Coach Shannon?s decision to play many true freshmen this year, do you think Miami has a legitimate shot at BCS championship in 2009?
Mark Schlabach (7:29 PM)
Still think there are too many holes to fill. Probably two or three years away from really contending nationally. The offense has to get a lot better, and maybe Marve can get it done once he's back. Winning an ACC title would be a start.
Jake (Columbia,TN)
What do you think the Vols can do this year in the SEC East?
Mark Schlabach (7:30 PM)
Somehow, I think the Vols are really flying under the radar. Good quarterback. Good tailback. Underrated receivers. Maybe the best secondary in the country. A few holes to fill on the defensive line and linebackers. They beat Georgia pretty bad last year and scored 50 the last time they went to Sanford Stadium. They get Florida at home. I think they'll blast UCLA on Monday night.
Jeff (Fresno CA)
Who do you think wins the Labor Day game between Fresno State and Rutgers and by how much?
Mark Schlabach (7:31 PM)
I think it's a great game. Greg Schiano told me this is probably Fresno State's best team in 10 years. Rutgers has to replace Ray Rice, but Schiano really likes Kordell Young and Jourdan Brooks. Scarlet Knights might have the best passing game in the Big East with Teel and Underwood and Britt. I'll got with Rutgers at home, but wouldn't be surprised if Bulldogs win. It's too close to call -- and I sure wouldn't be laying green on it.
sean (michigan)
will michigan state will win the big ten
Mark Schlabach (7:32 PM)
I'd go with Ohio State. Dantonio should be able to build off last year, though.
Kevin (Aiken,SC)
With all the injuries to some of the top teams in the sec east I think that has helped SC. What do you think of there chances and how good could this D be and can it carry them the whole year this year.
Mark Schlabach (7:34 PM)
Quarterback is a concern for me. So is tailback with Rank starting over Davis. Good defense. Lost their last five games last year and playing in the toughest division in the country (if not the Big 12 South).
Grover (NJ)
Hey Mark, do you think that Mark Sanchez can increase the Latino's interest in college football ala Fernandomania? I don't think USC or UCLA ever had a latino starting quarterback.
Mark Schlabach (7:35 PM)
Sanchez fans are flying Mexico's flags at USC games. I think it's great. Good for the sport and good for Sanchez.
Jeff(Parkersburg WV)
WVU is getting no respect from most the experts this year. Has everyone forgotten that this is basically the same team that beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl like an unwanted step-child? They did that without Rich Rod and Steve Slaton too!! Can you explain this and how they go as far as to pick Pitt to win the Big East?
Mark Schlabach (7:36 PM)
I've gone with West Virginia. So have most of the other guys at ESPN. However, I want to see how Pat White does throwing more often, and how Noel Devine does carrying it 20 times between the tackles. But the Mountaineers have to be the preseason favorites in the Big East, although South Florida and Pittsburgh are going to be contenders and maybe Rutgers, too.
Peyton (Martinsville, Va)
I've got East Carolina, anybody else? Mark?
Mark Schlabach (7:38 PM)
I'm going with the Pirates. I'm not sure what's going on in Blacksburg. Tailback is a concern. Receiver is definitely a concern. Defense has to replace a lot of studs. Frank Beamer's decision to redshirt Tyrod Taylor really makes me wonder if he believes this season is going to be a struggle. Sean Glennon is a pretty good college quarterback and a great representative of Virginia Tech, but I think Taylor might be their biggest weapon on offense when he's in the game.
Tim Macon, Ga
I'm a HUGE WVU fan and with their schedule if they go undedeated do you think a BCS Championship game is feasible??? I certainly do....
Mark Schlabach (7:38 PM)
let's worry about Pitt.
Ryan (Moore, OK)
NObody is really talking about any non BCS teams that could crash the party this year. What do you think Tulsa's chances are to go undefeated and make a BCS Bowl?
Mark Schlabach (7:39 PM)
I think BYU, Utah and Fresno State could crash the BCS party, although Fresno's schedule is pretty tough. Tulsa has done very well under Kragthorpe and Graham. They have to replace QB Paul Smith. Undefeated might be a stretch.
David (Warsaw,Ky0
I can understand that most people don't like Ohio State. Not everyone can like a winner. I was woundering though about one issue. I don't want to try and make anymore excuses for what has happened the last two Natl Games. However I have not heard one College Football show talk about what The Ohio State offense consisted of last year. That being said I doubt that 90% of Ohio State haters know that the Buckeyes had 6 first year starters last year on offense. QB,RB,WR,WR,WR,TE. And on defense which was top in the country they had 5 first year starters. Should anyone have expected for that team to come out and play the way they did? And why is there no talk about how much these kids are going to grow as people and players this year. Just wounderd your thoughts.
Mark Schlabach (7:40 PM)
As I said earlier, they're loaded with veterans and NFL talent. That's usually the mix for a championship. But they might have to beat an SEC team (or Oklahoma or West Virginia or USC) to do it.
Ryan (SD)
Going with the craziness of last year, what do you think of South Dakota State's chances tomorrow night against Iowa State
Mark Schlabach (7:41 PM)
Why not? But I can't imagine the Cyclones struggling like they did in Gene Chizik's first season. Iowa State won two of its last three games in 2007 and brings back about 14 starters. Passing game has to get better, though.
Joe Zimmer (ND)
After the upset at Michigan last year are potential BSC teams less likely to schedule oppenents like Appalachian State and North Dakota State.
Mark Schlabach (7:42 PM)
Yes, because teams from the Sun Belt, MAAC, WAC, etc., are demanding as much as $100,000 per game. BCS schools used to be able to schedule those games with much smaller guaranteed payouts.
Nathan Tulay (Bristol,PA)
Why isn't OKLAHOMA getting love???
Mark Schlabach (7:44 PM)
Uh, last two Fiesta Bowls, I guess. But Sooners seem loaded for bear. Very balanced offense with Murray and Bradford. Great offensive line. Great defensive line. The thing that worries me a little bit is the young corners. Not a good league to be breaking in new corners. But OU coaches think they'll be pretty good back there.
Chris (Los Angeles)
If Georgia makes it out of Jacksonville undefeated do you see anyone standing between them and the National Championship?
Mark Schlabach (7:44 PM)
They still have to play Auburn. And get by Arizona State, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU before they play the Gators.
CT (Upstate SC)
Beware SEC Carolina is 4real this year..
Mark Schlabach (7:45 PM)
Heard the same thing last year. And the year before. And the year before. And the year before that. If anyone can get it done, it's Spurrier.
Rob (OK)
Will Kansas be exposed as the frauds that they are this year now that they have a tougher schedule?
Mark Schlabach (7:46 PM)
Much tougher schedule, but Kansas has good players, too. I didn't think they deserved the Orange Bowl bid over Mizzou, especially after the Tigers beat them. But Reesing is a very good quarterback. Must replace a lot of good players, like McAnderson, Talib, Collins, etc. At South Florida. At Oklahoma. Texas Tech at home. Texas at home. Missouri in K.C. That's tough -- definitely tougher than last year.
JASON (DAYTON OHIO)
MARK WHO WILL U TAKE WELLS OR MORENO
Mark Schlabach (7:47 PM)
I'd take both. Best two running backs in college football. Both guys can carry their teams on their backs. Wells a little tougher inside; Moreno a little more explosive. But Wells looked pretty fast against LSU, too. I'd take either one of them.
Quincy,Florida
I'll admit that I'm a homer but from what I've seen Florida State looks like they will make some real noise this year.We have some of the best WRs in the nation and with the Ponder or Richardson leading the way at the QB position I think that we will have a lot better offense. The young O-line is a concern but they have been looking a lot better in practice. What are your feeling on this?
Mark Schlabach (7:49 PM)
You said it: OL and QB. I really like Drew Weatherford, but it's now or never. Antone Smith has to be better than he was last year. Parker is the real deal. Carr is a huge target. But they have to do a better job of protecting the QB. And there's still that academic thing hanging over their heads. Like the schedule. The Noles get Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, BC and Florida at home.
Ben (Tecumseh Michigan)
I think Notre Dame is going to suprise people with how much theyve improved. Whats your thought on their record this year?
Mark Schlabach (7:50 PM)
I think Weis can get them to a bowl game. He played a huge number of freshmen last year. Clausen will be better. Schedule is a little bit easier. The Irish can beat Michigan, San Diego State, Stanford, Washington, B.C., Navy and Syracuse. Tentua will make a difference on defense.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
When ND only wins 7 games, at most, does this prove Charlie Weis cannot coach without having the other teams signals?
Mark Schlabach (7:50 PM)
They're still very young. Come back two years from now.
Justin Surma, New York
Hey Mark - Thanks for taking the time to chat! Considering the game-changing field goal block in the Nat Champtionship game last year for LSU, and other field goals gaffes that OSU had last year - Do you think that Tressel should have Terelle Pryor handle the holding duties for field goals and extra points? It is a job often given to backup quarterbacks, and the incidental benefits could be enormous. Fourth and short becomes much more exciting with Pryor lingering in the backfield. The majority of defensive field goal defenses are comprised of lineman and linebackers, a group Pryor would have no problem beating to the corner for a first down. If the defense decides to play the fake, they will not be able to produce an aggressive rush. We all know Tressel is very conservative in the special teams, but I do not necessarily view this as a big risk.
Mark Schlabach (7:51 PM)
I'm sure Tressel will find lots of ways to get Pryor on the field. I'm very anxious to see how much Pryor plays Saturday.
Trey (Columbia, Missouri)
Will Mizzou win the Big 12 North and take down all-mighty Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship?
Mark Schlabach (7:52 PM)
I think Mizzou does win the Big 12 North and, yes, they are capable of beating Oklahoma. Like the schedule. Need to find a solid replacement for Tony Temple, though.
Chase McAfee ( Atlanta GA )
Florida will go undefeated and be crowned national champions ...
Mark Schlabach (7:54 PM)
if Percy Harvin is healthy, if Chris Rainey stays healthy and handles the pounding of the SEC, if Charlie Strong finds two or three more defensive linemen, if Pierre-Louis and Black hold up in the secondary, if they beat Georgia and LSU.
Dustin (Charleston,SC)
Who Gets More Carries James Davis or Cj Spiller, in order to take clemson further up the rankings?
Mark Schlabach (7:54 PM)
I'd split them 50/50. Davis is a tough runner; Spiller is a burner. I'd let Cullen Harper throw it around a lot, too. That guy might be the most underrated QB in the country.
Matt (Winston Salem, NC)
True or False: Alphonso Smith or Aaron Curry will be ACC defensive player of the year?
Mark Schlabach (7:55 PM)
Not sure. I'm betting Jim Grobe might be ACC Coach of the Year, though.
Daniel (Atlanta, GA)
How good are the Tar Heels? Can football be as big as basketball in Chapel Hill?
Mark Schlabach (7:55 PM)
Come on, it will never be as big as hoops on Tobacco Road. But Butch will have them in contention to win the ACC Coastal this season, with bigger things on the horizon.
Mike (Waco, TX)
On a scale of 1-10: How good are the chances that Baylor beats Wake Forest tomorrow night?
Mark Schlabach (7:56 PM)
2....Wake is underrated...again.
Peter (Raleigh, NC)
Can lightning strike twice for Appalachian State this Saturday against LSU? Any other upset alerts for this weekend?
Mark Schlabach (7:58 PM)
I don't know if Appalachian State can win the game, but I think they'll keep it close (said the same thing last year before they beat Michigan). Armanti Edwards gives you a chance in any stadium. Tiger Stadium is loud, but I think he'll handle it well. Those guys are used to winning, regardless of the opponent they're playing. How will Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee hold up? The Mountaineers have to keep those LSU defensive linemen away from Edwards, which won't be easy. That would be unbelievable, obviously, and bigger than last year's win. Other upsets? Utah over Michigan. Miami, Ohio over Vanderbilt. East Carolina over Virginia Tech. Northern Illinois over Minnesota. A few off the top of my head.
Adam Stokes (Stafford VA)
If BYU goes undefeated, is there anyway they don't get into a BCS game?
Mark Schlabach (7:58 PM)
Only if two teams from the SEC, Big 12, Pac-10, Big East, Big Ten finish unbeaten as well. And maybe Fresno State.
Tyler (Gainesville, GA)
Stafford or Tebow?
Mark Schlabach (8:00 PM)
Tebow right now, maybe Stafford at the end of the year. Tebow is as good as it gets and the Gators ask him to do everything. But Stafford has a better arm and finally has the supporting cast. His receivers have been pretty mediocre the last two years. He was thrown into the fire as a freshman two years ago. Give him Percy Harvin and Cornelius Ingram and those guys and his numbers would be similar. But, again, they're both great quarterbacks. Both NFL quarterbacks, too.
Quin (Lexington, KY)
How do you think the Kentucky defense will be?
Mark Schlabach (8:01 PM)
Rich Brooks says it's the best defense he's had there. A lot more depth. I don't think you can completely discount the Wildcats because Andre Woodson is gone. They could be pretty good on defense.
Steve (Michigan)
Lefevour or Tebow?
Mark Schlabach (8:01 PM)
Let me go to yoga classes with Lefevour next week and I'll let you know.
Steve (Morgantown WV)
Am I the only one that thinks Michigan can an utterly awful year? I know Rich Rod is a great coach but Michigan's team looks extremely weak. A walk-on or transfer qb, both with limited mobility and no experience, not to mention the slew of freshmen(talented but nonetheless) starting. im guessing 4-8 this year, with a broken bowl streak. What do you think?
Mark Schlabach (8:02 PM)
Gee, never would have guessed your hometown. Yes, I do believe the Wolverines might really struggle this season, starting with Saturday's game against Utah.
Kevin (West Orange, NJ)
Most exciting true freshman in the country this season?
Mark Schlabach (8:03 PM)
One guy I can't wait to see is Da'Quan Bowers from Clemson. A.J. Green from Georgia. Pryor at Ohio State. Michael Floyd at Notre Dame. ... I'm sure there are others out there.
Mark Schlabach (8:05 PM)
OK, folks. Somebody else will be along shortly. Enjoy this weekend's games. Glad the season is finally here!
Collin (California, MO)
What is you predicted record for MIZZOU this season and what bowl do you think they will go to?
Mark Schlabach (8:59 PM)
Tim Griffin here. Sorry for the delay. Bad internet in San Antonio. Collin. I think Mizzou goes 11-1, losing a game in regular season and then beats OU in the championship game. That will get them into the BCS for the first time, likely the Fiesta Bowl against South Florida.
Alf (Nashville, TN)
Any chance that Vandy makes its first bowl game since 1982? The Dores are 3.5 dogs to Miami (OH) in the ESPNU opener...
Mark Schlabach (9:00 PM)
Alf:Don't think so. Too much to ask for them to climb out of the SEC cellar.
Graham Watson (9:00 PM)
It's my turn to take over the chat. This is Graham Watson and I command the Independents and Others blog
John (Greenville, NC)
How do you think ECU matches up versus Virginia Tech this coming Saturday?Physically, we went toe to toe with them last year.
Graham Watson (9:03 PM)
I like ECU because of how close the game was last year. Had it not been for a couple turnovers, ECU might have come out of there with a win.
Bill (Unionville, CT)
Where do you think UConn lands in the Big East pecking order?
Graham Watson (9:04 PM)
They surprised a lot of people last year and I think they'll do the same this year. I do think that Pittsburgh and Rutgers are going to be near the top, but I wouldn't rule Connecticut out.
Shawn (Lansing, MI)
Graham, you are a Big 12 guru, can Nebraska or Colorado challenge in the Big 12 North this season and give Mizzou a run for their money?
Graham Watson (9:06 PM)
I don't think either has the offense to do it this year. I do like Colorado to challenge Kansas for the second spot especially if they can get through their non-conference schedule. Nebraska, I think is probably a year or two away from returning to the Nebraska everyone knows.
Drew Memphis TN
I hear a lot about how Ole Miss is supposed to make a bowl this year. It seems like every year someone talks about this. Last year they didn't win one SEC game so do you really think they can be good
Graham Watson (9:07 PM)
No, I don't. I think a lot of the optimism is based on quarterback Jevan Snead, a transfer from Texas. He's a great player, but under a new system it might be iffy this year.
Dave (Philly)
Graham,My Non-BCS Darling- Tell me you got TEMPLE taking its season opener at Army on Friday Night? First Step on the Road to Redemption
Graham Watson (9:08 PM)
Yes, yes I do. I think Temple gets their six wins this season. Will it be enough for a bowl? Probably not in the MAC, but I think Temple fans should feel good about a six-win season regardless
Scott (Ft Lauderdale, FL)
How long before the Big East finally picks up a 9th team and who do you think it will be?
Graham Watson (9:10 PM)
Probably won't be for a couple years after the BCS is revisited. As far s who it will be? Well, I think you have to look at C-USA or the MAC, but right now there's not a team consistently good enough to warrant a promotion.
Graham Watson (9:12 PM)
Two league loses? Probably not. I should have mention South Florida and West Virginia in my earlier stance about the Big East. If one of those teams loses, it's to the other.
Jordan (Clemson, SC
Why is Ohio State getting so much love this year? They have been dominated in the last two nat. championships by SEC teams.
Graham Watson (9:14 PM)
Because while all that is true, Ohio State is still a very good football team.
Chris (Lincoln)
Tim, assuming Nebraska wins its first three nonconference games and Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor redshirts, what chance do you think the Cornhuskers have of knocking off the Hokies in Lincoln?
Graham Watson (9:15 PM)
If the game was elsewhere, I'd say the chances were slim. But the Huskers can stick with just about anyone in Lincoln
Don, Austin Texas
Graham, Does TTECH have a realistic chance of winnignthe Big 12 South?
Graham Watson (9:17 PM)
I don't think so. Tech doesn't have the defense to beat OU.
Jimmy (Dyersburg, TN)
Give me some numbers. Whats floridas record this year? Do they get a in the BCS?
Graham Watson (9:19 PM)
The SEC will get two teams into the BCS, but I think Georgia is going to take the bid from the East. Look out for Alabama because it is poised to be the surprise team of the BCS picture. They'll beat Clemson this weekend.
thomas (los angeles,ca)
is mark sanchez oing to start week 1?
Graham Watson (9:19 PM)
Yes, yes he will.
john(greenville,sc)
yo boi you think south carolina can win da sec east
Graham Watson (9:20 PM)
South Carolina is great for upsets, but the East is too stacked this year. I'd put Tennessee ahead of them if you're looking for a sleeper.
matt
Juice or teel
Graham Watson (9:21 PM)
Juice if he can show he can pass on a regular basis.
Spenser (Little Hocking,Ohio)
With everyone talking about Noel Devine not being able to carry the ball 20-30 times a game, do you think if he can and sustains a good average does he have a chance to contented for the heisman?
Graham Watson (9:23 PM)
I think there's a question of both durability and Pat White running the ball. If he sustains a good average I think he'll have an outside chance at the Heisman, but if WVU is good, he'll have to take it from White.
ty pry (Columbus, ohio)
Who in you opionon is the best overall athlete (combo of speed and strength)?
Graham Watson (9:24 PM)
In the entire NCAA? Wow, that's a tough question. My initial thought was Tebow, but then I started thinking about Beanie Wells. I'm not sure you can narrow it down to just one guy.
Patrick ((Atlanta, Ga))
Illinois or Mizzou...who ya got?
Graham Watson (9:25 PM)
MIZ - ZOU... in a close one. Maybe 35-28.
Dan(Dallas, TX)
Auburn is flying very low under the radar this year. They've got everyone tough at home. Your thoughts on them winning the SEC?
Graham Watson (9:26 PM)
I don't think Auburn is flying under the radar at all. Yeah, they're in a tough spot because of the schedule, but I think they are the team to beat in the West
Alex (East brunswick, NJ):
rutgers or fresno state, who will come out on top?
Graham Watson (9:26 PM)
Fresno State and I don't think it will be close.
Matt hanover,ma
rudy carp or colt m
Graham Watson (9:27 PM)
Neither... Ick...
Toddd (Chattanooga, TN)
Any doubt that Tebow wins the Heisman (this or next year) and is a stud in the NFL?
Graham Watson (9:28 PM)
Yeah, I think there's a lot more talent out there and his stats won't be as impressive because he won't be running the ball as much.
John (Michigan)
mich st or cal.....who wins?
Graham Watson (9:29 PM)
I like Michigan State to sneak up on some people here and I'm not sold on a Nate Longshore-less Cal.
Zach: Auburn, AL
With all the hype around Georgia this year, why is everyone picking Florida to win the SEC?
Graham Watson (9:29 PM)
Because it has last year's Heisman winner for its quarterback...
dan (boston)
over under 8 wins for boston college
Graham Watson (9:29 PM)
Under
Jordan (New Berlin, WI)
Maclin or Crabtree?
Graham Watson (9:30 PM)
Maclin by a landslide because he's more versatile.
Ryan (Detroit)
How many loses would it take for Charlie Weis to be fired?
Graham Watson (9:31 PM)
$40 million worth of losses...
Nathan (Santa Cruz CA)
Maclin by a landslide because you're a homer?
Graham Watson (9:33 PM)
No because he can rush and return kicks and punts. Crabtree is a fantastic player, but in the long run, Maclin is te more well-rounded player.
Randy (Morgantown)
College football's best rivalry is...
Graham Watson (9:33 PM)
Army vs. Navy. That was an easy one.
Mars (Sacramento, CA)
Pat Hill's mustache or Dan Hawkins' bowl cut?
Graham Watson (9:34 PM)
That's awesome... Pat Hill's mustache
Jeff (Indianapolis, IN)
Do you think Indiana will make it to another bowl game?
Graham Watson (9:35 PM)
Ever? Boy, I hope so...
Mars (Sacramento, CA)
Tennessee, BYU, Fresno State -- Which team does UCLA have the best shot at beating in 2008?
Graham Watson (9:36 PM)
Fresno State
greg
how many wins for ND?
Graham Watson (9:36 PM)
Seven
Shawn (Austin, Texas)
Do you think Kansas will give a run for another BCS bowl?
Graham Watson (9:40 PM)
Kansas lost its star running back, two players off its offensive line and it's star corner and their top defensive tackle. And it plays a much more difficult schedule than it did a year ago.I think getting back to the BCS would be a much greater accomplishment for KU this year than it was a year ago.
Scott (Reno)
Chance Nevada has against Texas Tech? 30%?
Graham Watson (9:41 PM)
I like Nevada against Texas Tech more than I do against Missouri because I think it matches up better against the Red Raiders. However, Nevada is having trouble with its secondary, so if that persists, I don;t think it will be much of a challenge for either team.
Deek (Lexington, Ky)
Graham, will Kentucky beat Louisville on Sunday?
Graham Watson (9:45 PM)
That's going to be tough considering all the offensive holes it's had to plug this offseason. Louisville also has a ton of holes, but I like Hunter Cantwell to lead the team to victory
Peyton (Martinsville, VA.)
Graham, will Virginia show up against So. Cal. saturday? By show up I mean come to the game...literally.
Graham Watson (9:46 PM)
Ha! Good stuff. It will, but it will wish it hadn't. I'm not sure there's a team on the schedule that can stop the Men of Troy, not even Rick Neuheisel's ad.
Matt (Tucson, AZ)
How many questions are you receiving per minute?
Graham Watson (9:47 PM)
About 10... There's about 1,500 waiting to be answered.
BJ (Boca Raton, Florida)
How do you like the FAU Owls in the Sun Belt?
Graham Watson (9:48 PM)
The Owls will win the Sun Belt again. I don't think there's a team that can take them. I'd say another eight-win season.
John (Michigan)
Is this the year Michigan State beats Michigan?
Graham Watson (9:49 PM)
Yes. I like Michigan State to beat Michigan this year just because of experience and depth.
Jordan (New Berlin, WI)
whos on upset alert this week
Graham Watson (9:50 PM)
Off the top of my head... Clemson and Virginia Tech.
Brandon, Omaha
Graham, everyone is counting out Mich, saying a bowl game will be a success, and I will agree with that. But I also think they have a legit shot at a 8-9 win season. Your thoughts?
Graham Watson (9:51 PM)
Michigan is one of the big mysteries right now. They have the talent to win eight or nine games, but I think they're going to have trouble adjusting to RRod's system and getting on the same page. This could be a frustrating time to be a Michigan fan.
Seth KC, MO
Do you think Ohio State will erase the haters if they beat USC?
Graham Watson (9:53 PM)
Yes, but I think the real key is actually winning the national championship when they get there. That's what everyone hates on them for.
Mars (Sacramento, CA)
Do you imagine any non-BCS schools will fail to remain at the I-A level, such as Idaho or perhaps San Jose State?
Graham Watson (9:54 PM)
It's not like the English Premier League where you get demoted. It has to do with revenue and neither of those teams are in danger of falling below the revenue standards.
Heath (Atlanta)
Do you think the triple option that Paul Johnson brings will work at GA Tech?
Graham Watson (9:55 PM)
I think it will because teams won't be used to seeing it ad they won't know how to defend it. Paul Johnson is a great coach and he'll be successful at GT
Graham Watson (9:55 PM)
OK. I'm out. Someone else will be along in about 5 minutes
Ted Miller (9:59 PM)
Happy College Football Eve.Fire away.
Yatin (Santa Monica)
Love the Pac-10 blog. Given your prediction of Jahvid Best winning Conference Offensive POY, how many carries (not "touches") do you see him getting a game, and who do you see as Cal's between-the-tackles RB?
Ted Miller (10:01 PM)
If you asked Best, he'd say him. Tedford said that carries mostly will be split between Best and Shane Vereen, neither of whom is terribly big. My guess is if a tough yard is needed, they'll give it to the FB.
shane plattsmouth neb
tennessee or ucla also oky st/washington state
Ted Miller (10:02 PM)
TennesseeAnd Okla State.Both big.Sorry Pac-10.
Michael (Valdosta, GA)
Why is there not alot of talk about LSU. They are coming into the season with a great defense and offense, if they had a proven QB, do you think they would get talked about more, and if Hatch comes out gunning, do you think they will get more recognition?
Ted Miller (10:04 PM)
LSU should have scheduled a tough nonconference foe to prove its worth. And, yes, if they had a proven QB they'd be in everyone's national title discussion.
Raf (Denver, CO)
What are the chances that App State has another upset this year?
Ted Miller (10:05 PM)
somewhere between zero and none
Jason (Chicago)
Can Cal stop Ringer?
Ted Miller (10:06 PM)
That 'tis the question... My guess is if Ringer is held under 100, the Bears win fairly easily. But this is a quality test for the new 3-4 look.
Tim (Athens)
Fun Fact: Big Ten is 7-7 vs the SEC the last 5 years, 14-13 over the last 10. All but 1(06 NC game)of those were bowl games played in SEC states.
Ted Miller (10:06 PM)
that is a fun fact.
Jason(Austin, TX)
You said in your blog that Jake Locker is the nation's best running QB. I'm guessing you just momentarily forgot about the guy about to absolutely smash the all-time ncaa rushing mark for qb's.Locker's good but he's no Pat White.
Ted Miller (10:08 PM)
Doh... yer got me... and that's Daphne, Ala's finest... OK... Locker gets No. 2. Mia culpa.
Jordan (New Berlin, WI)
c. daniel or m. stafford
Ted Miller (10:08 PM)
who are you... e e cummings?can i say all of the above?
Josh (Knoxville, TN)
I haven't heard any talk about the primetime UT at UCLA game this Monday night? I think the Vols have the potential to really take it to the Bruins but I also know Chow always has a few tricks up his sleeve. What do you think the outcome will be in this one?
Ted Miller (10:10 PM)
Josh... I think you're are correct. UCLA has talent gaps that the Vols will exploit and as good as Chow is, I don't think he can work pure voodoo on this one. But you SEC folks might enjoy the Bruins two DTs, Brian Price and Brigham Harwell. Tennessee should win this one by 2 tds
Andrew (Birmingham, Al)
Knowshon Moreno. I don't like saying it...but is he the next herschel walker?
Ted Miller (10:12 PM)
Did you experience Herschel? I'm an Atlanta native and I've got to say I still haven't seen anything like him. Like Moreno though.
Rando (Chicago, IL)
I got all decked out in Cal gear and stomped all over MSU's campus this afternoon. Even though the game is in Berkeley, you think that gives us an edge?
Ted Miller (10:13 PM)
They might as well not even play. It's over. Nice stomping.
John (Knoxville, TN)
How do you think Tennessee's new offensive coordinator, Dave Clawson, is gonna fare in the SEC this year?
Ted Miller (10:15 PM)
Go look at my bio... then look at Clawson's. Do you really think I'm going to trench a fellow Spider? I watch Richmond in the I-AA playoffs last year... Got a feeling you Vols are going to fall in love all over again.
Shawn (Lansing, MI)
Any Heisman hopefuls that can sneak up on us, a name many may not have heard of?
Ted Miller (10:17 PM)
Shawn.. if your home state is any indication of your college football eyeballs, why not Cal's Jahvid Best and MSU's Javon Ringer?
Morgan (Strongsville, OH)
James Laurinaitis or Rey Maualuga?
Ted Miller (10:19 PM)
I am so Rey on that one. Though I always was a fan of the Road Warriors...Have you ever seen Rey... golly.. go to YouTube. To be serious: I am very curious how each turns out when he's playing on Sundays.
Mars (Sacramento, CA)
Why don't the pundits give Arizona State more of a chance at beating Georgia in Tempe, huh?
Ted Miller (10:21 PM)
Because we are big meanies.Truth: We're hung up on ASU's OL. It lost four starters from a crew that gave up 55 sacks last year and the UGA D-line is going to be a handful. Would I be shocked if Dennis Erickson pulls one out of his, er, hat? No. But I wouldn't tell my grandma to take that to Vegas.
Chase McAfee ( Atlanta GA )
Just how tight does Taylor Mays look...
Ted Miller (10:23 PM)
Is this new slang for GOOD?Because if it is, I will say that Mays is, er, quite tight. He's the best athlete on the nation's most athletic team.
Chris (Arizona)
What are the chances of the Arizona Wildcats making it to a bowl game this year? Can Willie Tuitama step up and take them to one?
Ted Miller (10:25 PM)
Chris... Write this down.Arizona will go to a bowl game this year, and Willie T may throw for 4,000 yards... but it sure would be nice if Gronkowski would not end up having mono.
mike (new mexico)
Can atthew Stanfford win the Heisman??
Ted Miller (10:26 PM)
yes. Just win, baby. Particularly the Cocktail Party.
Kevin (Cleveland)
Which teams wins a BCS bowl game first, Oklahoma or Ohio State?
Ted Miller (10:28 PM)
Ohio State... like fairly soon. Perhaps in January.
Jason (Dana Point, CA)
Is Julio Jones the best receiver ever?
Ted Miller (10:30 PM)
He's certainly the best WR in the history of Foley High School... wonder if he ever made a diving catch on "throwed rolls" at Lambert's Cafe on the way to Gulf Shores... help me out Alabama fans.
Chuck (Cornelia, GA)
Everyone seems to be writing UGA off because of their schedule. Why not let them play the games first then decide whether or not they deserve to be #1? I think that anyone who can come out with one or two losses with this schedule still deserves to be in the big game. Thoughts?
Ted Miller (10:31 PM)
Er... writing off? You mean like ranking them No. 1 as a sign of disrespect?
jeff (austin, tx)
is there a chance that texas will be beaten by texas tech this year?
Ted Miller (10:32 PM)
yes.
Rob (OK)
Will Kansas be exposed as the frauds that they are this year now that they have a tougher schedule?
Ted Miller (10:34 PM)
I think those of us who are KU-skeptical are encouraged by the Jayhawks actually having to play a team with a pulse this year.
Ryan (Seattle,WA)
Do you think Ty can get to a bowl with as many Frosh playing this year?BTW Pat White would still be at the starting line next to Jake Locker. Go Dawgs!
Ted Miller (10:36 PM)
I think Washington has improved steadily under Willingham, but I suspect he will be done in by a brutal schedule. It's hard to find six wins for him
Alex (Broken Arrow OK)
Which would you take USC's Defense or Georgia's Offense?
Ted Miller (10:37 PM)
I'd take USC defense... and you'd have bring in teams that play on Sunday's to get me to trade.
cfb expert tulsa, oklahoma
ted why is it that when we look at the historical documented facts between the big 12 top 6 and the sec top 6 from everything from head to head records (5 top 6 sec teams have combined losing records to the big 12 even though 21 more games at sec venues), schedules especially against the 1aa teams the sec loads up on, the earned undefeated national titles etc that the "so called experts" always claim the sec is the toughest. by the historical documented facts if a super 12 conference were to be formed between the 2 that the sec programs would be the cupcakes in that league. so can you explain why the media doesnt state the true facts?
Ted Miller (10:39 PM)
I apologize for... whatever injury has been caused you. I think the Big 12 matches the SEC this season, if that helps.
Frank (Morgantown, WV)
ay boy. My daggum Mountaineers are the real deal this year. Patrick White is the quickest thing since my runs last night.
Ted Miller (10:41 PM)
And I am loving Auburn's visit on Oct. 23... wouldn't be great fun if both were undefeated?
Mitch (Columbus)
Is Ohio State quick enough to play with the SEC this year?
Ted Miller (10:44 PM)
Yes. My feeling is this is the year Ohio State breaks through (as if they've got anything to prove)... but they've got to take care of business against USC.
Steve (Morgantown, WV)
What do you think Pat White's chances are of winning the Heisman trophy?
Ted Miller (10:47 PM)
He's a darkhorse... but, like I noted before, what happens if he produces, say, 300 total yards and three TDs in a win over undefeated Auburn? That's how you get into the discussion.
Alvan Mobile, Alabama
I'm sure Julio caught every roll thrown at him from Lamberts. That place is great! speaking of great, do you think that word and University of Alabama football will be used in the same sentence this year?
Ted Miller (10:49 PM)
Would you be OK with "getting there"?... It's hard to doubt that Saban will get it done. But he's got to beat that team on the Plains first.
Dave Boise, Idaho
Fresno @ Boise State, who you going with?
Ted Miller (10:49 PM)
Fu Manchu
Hiren (Columbus)
Do you feel Ohio State has the best defense. If so, would you compare them to the 2002 defense or better?
Ted Miller (10:51 PM)
I'd say the best defense in the nation will be on the field on Sept. 13 at USC... And Ohio State will have the ball.
David (Berkeley, CA)
How much do you thing the new training facility at Cal would impact recruiting... if it ever gets built...
Ted Miller (10:53 PM)
A big boost. And I think we're all tired of the Tree Sitters. Just imagine if those guys put the same man hours into a cause that actually benefited someone?
James Atlanta, Georgia
Is Tennessee overrated? They won the East last year and they get no respect.
Ted Miller (10:55 PM)
At 18? I don't think so. And if this Crompton feller turns out to be something, then the East race will be REALLY interesting.
Will (Florida)
Will Notre Dame win 6 games this year?
Ted Miller (10:56 PM)
Yes... it's about the schedule, though, not coaching genius.
M
How bout USC defense vs. UGA defense? And Why?
Ted Miller (10:58 PM)
USC... No weaknesses... depth.... You SEC folks should come out and see a practice. Seriously. USC is completely open and its practices are a sight to behold. I promise you would come away impressed.
Joseph
Any reason Knowshon Moreno was left off nearly every ESPN analysts pre-season list in the segment run on SC the other night?
Ted Miller (10:59 PM)
that can't be true... for real? Heck, I'll put him on my list twice for you.
Stephen (Bay Area, CA)
A blitzing Rey Maluga runs into a blocking Alex Mack. Who wins? (Having been bounced from an SF club by the latter, my vote is with Mack)
Ted Miller (11:01 PM)
Gosh... two specimens.... the winner? Quantum physics?
Ted Miller (11:02 PM)
Folks... I have to go cook dinner for my wife. And get something cold to drink Just think: Tomorrow ... college football.
Bruce Feldman (11:05 PM)
Hi.. Good to be here on the eve of what should be a great season. What do you guys want to talk about?
bill - columbus
can beanie wells get loose against usc or will he have an under achieving night?
Bruce Feldman (11:06 PM)
I think he'll crack the 100-yard mark.. He ran for 150 on LSU last year.
Charlie (Montgomery, AL)
Auburn's spread will it work this year?
Bruce Feldman (11:06 PM)
I'm buying it. I think Auburn wins the SEC West.
Fantasy Fred (Dreamville, GA)
Okay....dreamtime, Bruce. Take a team made up of current OSu and USC players and put them in a game against current Florida and Georgia players....who wins? We think that not even USC could carry the dead Buckeye weight! Thoughts.
Bruce Feldman (11:08 PM)
That's a great question. The non SEC team would be better on D, although I think OSU would contribute most of the offensive players.
ataylor (Provo, UT)
Bruce, two questions. First, who has a better chance of beating BYU, Washington or UCLA? Second, if BYU finishes the season undefeated, what are the chances that Max Hall finishes in the top three of Heisman voting? (let's say he passes for more than 4,000 and throws for over 30 TDs)
Bruce Feldman (11:09 PM)
I think Washington does. Jake Locker is way better than anything UCLA has and he could give problems to an inexperienced D. I don't think Max Hall cracks the top 3. BYU won't have a spotlight game against anyone to convince skeptics after the Colt Brennan campaign went the way it did.
Joseph (South)
AJ Green or Julio Jones...who has the better year?
Bruce Feldman (11:10 PM)
I'll say Jones although it partly because I think Bama has fewer options to lean on.
matthew (cincinnati, oh)
what's your take on a mauk-less bearcat team this season?
Bruce Feldman (11:11 PM)
They're Grobesque in how they execute. Also have two great defenders in Bird and Mike Mickens..I think they finish around 3rd in the Big East behind Pitt and WVU.
Darryl (Oakland, CA)
Bruce,Everyone seems to think UCLA is going to get blasted by Tennessee. I recall when Cal went to Tennessee to break in a new QB (Longshore), Cal got worked. Tennessee came out angry. I suspect the same thing happening here with UCLA getting tired of how they're going to get thrashed. It's not like UCLA has no talent, their D is actually pretty strong. Do you think it'll be a similar scenerio?
Bruce Feldman (11:12 PM)
Hey Darryl.. I don't. UCLA's O-line is a mess. I think the Bruins will have a hard time winning 5 games this year.
John(wantagh, NY)
Randy Shannon is bringing in the talent, how long until they are considered an elite team? What kind of improvement if any should be expected this season?
Bruce Feldman (11:14 PM)
I think they have some great young talent, but it's all young. Not much in that senior class. I expect UM to win the ACC in 2009 and I could see them winning 8 games this year. I think both QBs are the real deal.
Brent (Knoxville, TN)
I know UGA is a "hot" team, but let's not forget who their last loss was to..35-14 to Tennessee. Vols also beat them by 18 the year before. What are the odds UT takes the East?
Bruce Feldman (11:15 PM)
I know. I didn't forget that game... Still I say they have a 18% chance.. I give UF50%, UGA 30% and Carolina 2%
Bruce Feldman (11:15 PM)
Sorry, that was some weird math for me...
cfb expert tulsa, oklahoma
bruce ill ask you what i ask ted. why when we look at the historical documented facts between the big 12 top 6 and the sec top 6 with the big 12 domination that the media doesnt state the true facts? we always hear how tough it is in the sec with bama 10-15-2, tenn 4-5-1, uga 4-7, lsu 39-37-5, auburn 5-12, and florida 1-6-1 against the big 12 top 6. i dont see where ou, texas, nebraska, or missouri would have problems in the sec by the historical documented facts of head to head games between both conferences top 6 programs. so my question is why doesnt the media state the truth? everytime i try to watch an sec game i literally have to turn off the tv from all the hype and rhetoric knowing the true facts.
Bruce Feldman (11:18 PM)
I think if you take the top 5 of each: LSU, UF, Auburn, UGA, Tenn vs. OU, UT, Mizzou, Tech and Neb.. the difference happens after the top three in the Big 12. I feel like the SEC is just a little deeper.
Chuck (Indianapolis, Indiana)
I haven't seen a Goldem Domer question yet. What are the chances that Weiss will get the team turned around before he's got to leave town. I like a lot of what I see on the team but the offense seems too predictable to surprise anyone. What do you think?
Bruce Feldman (11:20 PM)
I think they'll win 8 games this year. It's time. This is year 4. I think if Weis doesn't win at least 7, it'll be hard for him to stick around. The schedule is very manageable. I think Pitt might be the second best team they face this year... what bothered me last year was how unprepared they looked last season and as bad as their OLine was, it was still a lot older than the groups at UGA and Auburn.
Real fan (SEC country)
Hey Bruce, why do SEC haters like cfb wanna be expert try to bring up stuff 20 years ago? Can't be a cfb expert if you deny the truth that the SEC is and has been the dominant conference this decade period.
Bruce Feldman (11:20 PM)
just spurring the debate..
Brandon (Scottsdale, AZ)
Over or Under: Iowa wins 6 games this year.
Bruce Feldman (11:21 PM)
Over..just barely though.
Lauren (Morgantown, WV)
Let's gooo Mountaineers! Sorry just had to say it! I only speak the truth!!! :-D
Eugene Oregon
so how strong would you compare Oregons defensive backfield with the rest of the nation?
Bruce Feldman (11:22 PM)
It's great.. I think the Ducks and USC are the top two there. USC's safeties are better but the Ducks corners have the edge there.
Joseph
Here's a less thought provocing question. Ugliest uniforms in Division I?
Bruce Feldman (11:23 PM)
I don't like Minnesota's. They look like something from McDonald's.
Matt (Athens. GA)
USC defense vs. UGA defense? And Why?
Bruce Feldman (11:25 PM)
UGA has better DTs and is probably better up front. USC's back seven is better. I expect Maualuga, Cushing, Ellison and Mays all go first round. The two CBs also probably are first day picks too.
Shock(Greenville, SC)
Will Da'Quan Bowers get a lot of playin time in the opener against Alabama?
Bruce Feldman (11:25 PM)
Yes,.. hopes he matches up up against Bama's Andre Smith, the best OT in the SEC.
Dave (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Temple might have the best defense in the MAC, but do you forsee the offense stepping up and carrying us to a bowl game?
Bruce Feldman (11:26 PM)
No, I don't think there is enough firepower to get to a bowl game, but he's making them better. Good work by Golden.
Bruce Feldman (11:27 PM)
Aaron from CA... ask that question again.. never saw it.
Otto (CA)
Who is/was better coming out of high school? Barkley or Clausen?
Bruce Feldman (11:29 PM)
I think Barkley will eventually be better. Clausen didn't face the toughest competition and was on a loaded team. Actually, I started answering this question as if you asked if Crist would be better than Clausen. Not sure yet about Barkley. It's way too soon.
tito, overseas
hey bruce, where are the picks of week 1 ?
Bruce Feldman (11:30 PM)
They go up tomorrow morning... I'll say this. I'm already having second thoughts about picking NC State to keep it kinda close and for VT to not have so much trouble with ECU.
Charles (Kansas City, MO)
Why is no one talking about Mizzouri's cupcake schedule? You could not stop talking about how Kansas played no one last year. Why is everyone giving MU a pass?
Bruce Feldman (11:31 PM)
Because they open with a team that just played in the Rose Bowl. Look at Indiana's schedule.
Matt (Daytona Beach, FL)
Hey Bruce, now Missouri has not won in Lincoln, Nebraska for 30 years. What are the chances that the Huskers are the Darkhorse in the Big 12 North and upset Missouri at home?
Bruce Feldman (11:31 PM)
It's possible. They do get a week off to prepare.
Erik(Nashville,TN.)
Bruce..really enjoy your commentary on finebaum each week. What do you believe is the key to Bama winning over Clemson this weekend. I'm thinking JPW minus the mental breakdowns that overbare him at times.
Bruce Feldman (11:33 PM)
Thanks...from listening to the Ole Miss coaches last year, they spoke very highly of Saban's ability to come up with creative blitz packages. Curious to see if his young LBs are savvy enough to keep it all together and not get gashed by those Clemson backs. If they can, they have a good shot.
Frank And Nicole In Quincy
Come on Bruce don't duck my question.Which sports blogs do you read on a daily basis?
Bruce Feldman (11:35 PM)
Actually, I read a lot of them.. Thebiglead; Heismanpundit, EDSBS, wizardofodds, all of the new CF blogs on ESPN.com, CFR.. I'm sure I'm forgetting some others.
Rob: (Munster, In)
Michigan vs. ND. Who wins
Bruce Feldman (11:35 PM)
I'll say ND this time. Too many inexperienced guys on the Mich offense right now.
Michelle (Lubbock, Texas)
Bruce....Michael Crabtree had astounding number last year, as a Freshman. If he does the same this year, do you think he will have a chance to be a Heisman Candidate?
Bruce Feldman (11:36 PM)
I think he has a shot, but keep an eye on Detron Lewis, he'll put up some big numbers too, and for that reason I think Harrell will emerge as the more viable Tech candidate.
Purvis Burger (Triple XXX diner, Purdue)
What are a couple of your favorite foods at different college venues you've been to?
Bruce Feldman (11:38 PM)
Actually just had this question with my buddy Andy.. Love Calhouns in Knoxville, Ajax in Oxford.. heck the Chevron in Oxford has great food..I like the County Line in Austin although I've been to a ton of great places there. Like the Metro Grill in Seattle.
Yatin (LA)
Hey Bruce...how do you see Cal's season playing out? History (under Tedford) says the lower the expectations, the better the results
Bruce Feldman (11:40 PM)
Good point. I think there are four teams in the Pac-10 playing for second (ASU, Oregon, Cal and Arizona).. I still doubt Cal wins more than 9 this year.
Erik Commerce, GA
Is the UGA Central Michigan game the biggest possible slip up in week 2
Bruce Feldman (11:41 PM)
I don't see it. CMU really struggled whenever they stepped up in class.
Shannon (Knoxville,TN)
God, I love this time of the year!!
Bruce Feldman (11:42 PM)
Yeah, me too. Used to have mixed feelings. Loved the start of football season, but dreaded going to school. Now I don't have to go to school and still get to watch football. It's awesome!
Thomas (Post, Texas)
Bruce...wanna try real Texas BBQ at it's best??? Come to Tom and Bingos Hickory Pit in Lubbock, Texas if you happen to come to the UT/Tech game.
Bruce Feldman (11:44 PM)
Thanks. I've been to Lubbock. Went to some BBQ place with Leach.. eh. Next time.
derylle (skokie IL)
how will illini do this year without mendenhall and who wil replace him?
Bruce Feldman (11:45 PM)
I think they'll still be pretty good, but I expect them to miss him. Not sure Daniel Dufrene is that kind of workhorse.
Alex clark,nj
what are the chances that Michigan state ends up in the top 4 in the big 10
Bruce Feldman (11:46 PM)
I could see it. Hoyer is a bigtime QB and Ringer is one of the more underrated RBs in the country, but depth is a big issue. But are they there with Wisky, PSU and Illinois for 2-3-4? Yeah, I think so.
jj (san diego, CA)
why is sean glennon starting over tyrod taylor and also, is there any reason VT cant go undefeated during the regular season and have a huge clash with clemson in the ACC championship game?
Bruce Feldman (11:47 PM)
I doubt see Tech winning more than 9. Heard they are waaay down in the skill positions. Not sure they have any solid TB and the receivers aren't strong.
Will (Kernersville ,NC)
Does Wake Forest have a chance to get back to a BCS bowl this year?
Bruce Feldman (11:48 PM)
Yeah, they execute well, have good speed on D, a solid QB and they don't beat themselves. Plus, the ACC is shaky.
Bernard (Princeton, NJ)
Ohio State will not win the Big Ten if....???
Bruce Feldman (11:49 PM)
..Beanie Wells and Laurinaitis get injured.
Rick (Boulder Colorado)
How do you see CU doing? Will Darell Scott have a major impact like everyone says?
Bruce Feldman (11:50 PM)
Not sure on Scott. Their schedule is rough. Winning 6 games with that kind of youth will be a big challenge. I think next year they make the big move.
Bruce Feldman (11:50 PM)
Jake from MD.. edit your question down and I'll answer it.
Justin Spencer (Oxford, MS)
Will Jerrell Powe make an impact in the SEC this year?
Bruce Feldman (11:52 PM)
I think so. He still needs to bang off the rust, now that he knocked off 40 lbs. He also has to get better at keeping his feet, but he can be a dominant inside force. Also when Ole Miss gets Peria Jerry and Greg Hardy back, they'll have a nasty DL. People don't realize how talented those guys are.
Steph (Tallahassee, FL)
How many games do you see Florida State winning this year? I say 8-4.
Bruce Feldman (11:52 PM)
yeah..7-5 or 8-4..The O-line still is a weak spot.
Jake (Maryland)
Darrius Heyward-Bey: Underrated WR and Biletnikoff candidate??? Fridge on hot seat?
Bruce Feldman (11:54 PM)
Very underrated. Just ask Miami how dangerous he is. I think it's tricky because Fridge elevated expectations but right now he needs to get some momentum back. I heard the young RBs are very exciting.
Jesse (Los Angeles, CA)
Will Washington get rid of Ty if they don't make a bowl game? And who would then be the replacement? DeWayne Walker, whom they spoke with earlier this year?
Bruce Feldman (11:55 PM)
Yeah I think Ty needs to get to at least .500 and against that schedule it's gonna be tough. Walker would be a good choice, although Jim Mora Jr is right there now too.
Ryan (Atlanta, GA)
How legit is Michael Johnson? Even as a tech fan, I have to admit I dont recall this much pro-hype for a guy who a) has been around for awhile and b) has not much statistical evidence to back him this much...
Bruce Feldman (11:57 PM)
Good question. My buddy who used to work in the Ole Miss recruiting office told me a story about Johnson. Said when Orgeron took over they tried to get in on him, but it was too late. Said Johnson is a great kid. Super sharp, polite, really gifted athlete, just raw. Might be one of those guys who is better in the NFL than he is in college. Tech has a great DT too btw.
William (Nashville, Tn)
Do I ask really bad questions or is there another reason why none of my questions get posted or answered
Bruce Feldman (11:58 PM)
Not sure.. it's probably because we get like 50 questions every miunute and it's easy to miss some.
Bruce Feldman (11:58 PM)
If you don't get yours answered, keep asking it.
Lucas (Clarksburg, WV)
Big East underrated? Bowl records last 3 seasons...outstanding. 3 or 4 teams able to win the Big East this year, so why only 2 ranked in the USA Today? They just win. Whats wrong with this picture when the Big 10 is so overrated.
Bruce Feldman (11:58 PM)
Yes, Big East is underrated.
brandon (Madison, WI
with pj hill running strong do the badgers have a chance to win the big ten and make a run at the national championship?
Bruce Feldman (11:59 PM)
PJ needs to step up in big games. He hasn't been much of a presence whenever the Badgers play top teams.
Erik (Indianapolis, IN)
Since you mentioned Indiana's schedule in a previous response, where do you slot Indiana - and the rest of the "middle of the pack" Big Ten? How many bowl games do you see out of that conference?
Bruce Feldman (12:00 AM)
somewhere around 5-8 in the Big Ten. Lewis is one of the better QBs in the league and Greg Middleton is a dominant force. They need to get him back.
Nick (Kansas City, MO)
Mizzou's defense got better as the season went on last year and was in the top 3 of every defensive catagory in big 12 play. Do think they could be a top 10 D in the nation this year?
Bruce Feldman (12:01 AM)
Maybe. They need to prove it though. At least with that offense they can get by with holding teams under 20 and be in good shape.
Jon (Laguna Beach, CA)
Hey Bruce, honestly dude...why does the PAC 10 get hated on so much, especially from SEC fans? Is it their straight up ignorance?
Bruce Feldman (12:03 AM)
I think it's because everyone thinks it is a one-team league USC and then a bunch of teams that range from decent to mediocre. And since USC is the powerhouse, the Trojans don't face another "great" team in their conference slate. What also hurts is no one aside from USC has been consistently great.. Oregon's the closest, but after that you have teams spike up and then backslide to 6-6.
Roger(Sac, CA)
What do you forsee for Fresno State this year. 4-0 in non-conference, Dogs rarely loss at home and i dont see UCLA being much a problem, and Rutgers wont see it coming in my opinion.
Bruce Feldman (12:04 AM)
I like Fresno a lot. I expect big things from Brandstater. He might be a first rounder. Guy has it all and has really blossomed despite now working on his fourth OC in 4 years.
AJ (Clemson)
Clemson has a shot to go undefeated? Yes or No? And don't look at teams in the past, and say they will choke, look at this year's team and tell me that you don't see a possible undefeated run.
Bruce Feldman (12:05 AM)
Not a great shot. I think their Oline will be the thing that hurts them the most.
David (Athens, GA)
Why is no one talking about Jeff Owens? In the spring Mel Kiper had him as the #4 Junior DT... now not a word about him. What made him fall of the radar so much?
Bruce Feldman (12:06 AM)
Don't know. I don't put much stock in all the mock drafts you see online these days. Pro scouts really don't study guys until their senior years when they come on campus.. Owens also has another stud DT right next to him.
Mitch (Evansville, IN)
Bruce, will Notre Dame make a bowl game?
Bruce Feldman (12:06 AM)
yes
Dan (Kansas City, MO)
What 3 coaches do you think are on the hottest seat this year?
Bruce Feldman (12:07 AM)
Willingham, Greg Robinson and Mike Stoops but I think Arizona comes through with a big year.
Justin (Duluth, Georgia)
Why is Arian Foster overlooked in the Country as a top 5 running back???
Bruce Feldman (12:09 AM)
He really has yet to break out. I think he only had one game with over 125 yards last season and it was like 135 against Miss State.
Tricia (Delray Beach, FL)
Honestly Bruce, what BCS title game would you most like to see? I say USC vs Georgia!
Bruce Feldman (12:10 AM)
Florida vs. USC would be pretty compelling.
matt (texas)
How do you think Texas AandM will do?
Bruce Feldman (12:10 AM)
Goodson has to run wild I think for them to get to a New YEars Day Bowl.
Mitch (Evansville, Indiana)
What up, Bruce? Is this James Aldrige's breakout year at RB?
Bruce Feldman (12:11 AM)
Maybe .. I think ND will try and be very physical with that big Oline and not get caught leaning on the pass as much. But ND probably works in 3-4 backs this year.
Jeff Picker (Mooresville, NC)
What is the most overrated conference?
Bruce Feldman (12:12 AM)
Can't say the Big Ten now because everyone seems to be ripping it.
Storm (Georgia)
Tebow has never won a big game why does everyone think that will change? b/c the team has'nt
Bruce Feldman (12:14 AM)
That's an interesting point.. I guess FSU doesn't count as big? I think Tennessee at the time would qualify.
Stanford CA
Do you think Stanford will be able to take their wins off of USC and Cal last year and make it to a bowl game?
Bruce Feldman (12:14 AM)
I give them a shot. Was up there for a few days and they have a good OLine and terrific LBs. Need the receivers to come on though.
Reilly ( Wa)
Charlie weiss has only beat one team that finsihed in the top 25 since hes been at ND? why is he all the sudden gonna come through? They dont have as much talent as 2005
Bruce Feldman (12:15 AM)
Their defense is better now than it was then and the schedule is MUCH easier.
Keith (Milwaukee, WI)
Yo Bruce, can I get a little time here?
Bruce Feldman (12:16 AM)
sure.. what direction are we going?
kyle (philadelphia, pa)
Everyone forgets about the number 1 recruit a couple years back Derrick Williams for Penn State. Do you think he has a shot (a long shot) at the Heisman?
Bruce Feldman (12:16 AM)
Nope.
Storm (Georgia)
Tebow is 1-3 vs the AP top 25 (as a starter) Stafford is 8-1 vs the AP top 25.i'm just wanting a respnse
Bruce Feldman (12:17 AM)
Yeah but Mustain was 8-0 as a starter in the SEC. Does that mean he's better than both of them? UF also had two starters back on D last year.
Todd (Boaz, Al)
How Much of an Impact will Julio Jones have in Alabama his first year?
Bruce Feldman (12:18 AM)
Sorry.. should've grabbed this sooner. Big impact. He'll make JPW a lot better. Saw Jones at the Under Armour game. He's a real gamer. He'll probably snag at 7-8 TDs this year. At least.
London (Denver)
Sophomore slump warnings go out to.....?
Bruce Feldman (12:19 AM)
Jags at BC?
Jim Thorpe (Dizzy, Iowa)
If you could tailgate at any place on Saturday, where would you go?
Bruce Feldman (12:20 AM)
Ole Miss. The Grove is a real sight to behold when it comes to tailgating. It's one place every fan should visit at least once.
kyle (philadelphia, pa)
Is this Crabtree's last year at Tech?
Bruce Feldman (12:20 AM)
If I was a betting man, yeah probably.
Dan (Columbus)
Bruce....can I get an answer!OSU-USC who ya got?
Bruce Feldman (12:21 AM)
I think that'll be tough for OSU. Not ready to call it just yet.
Justin (Duluth, Ga.)
All the SEC schools Bruce and you pick the grove?????
Bruce Feldman (12:21 AM)
Have you been there?
Bruce Feldman (12:22 AM)
I didn't say it was great football..tailgating.
Jim, Birmingham
According to many UGA fans, I'm all of a sudden surrounded by them, this team is better than the 1980 National Champion team. This year's team hasn't even played a game yet. Is there ANY shot these guys go undefeated? Please dont' dance around this, either, Bruce, please. Give me your honest opinion, I won't tell.
Bruce Feldman (12:23 AM)
There's a shot yeah, but I don't think they win the SEC East. I'm picking Florida there. The revenge factor will be big.
Bruce Feldman (12:23 AM)
Taylor from AL...way too long. edit it down pleeeeease.
Gene (Suffern,NY)
Yo Bruce... Any love for South Florida? What are their Big East and National Title chances?
Bruce Feldman (12:25 AM)
They have a ton of experience back, but there's something I'm not quite sold on there. Maybe it's the way they finished last season.
Ryan (Omaha, NE)
How do you see Nebraska doing in the up coming years with all the Talent coming up in the Big 12 North? Any chance for a title shot anytime soon?
Bruce Feldman (12:26 AM)
Maybe. The Big 12 North will be wide open in 2009 although CU will be coming up fast.
kyle (philadelphia, pa)
In your opinion, who will finish 1,2, and 3 in the Big 10?
Bruce Feldman (12:26 AM)
OSU, Wisconsin, Illinois edging PSU and MSU.
Vincent (Dallas, TX)
Bruce, does June Jones make any strides at SMU this year? Will he keep talking even if nobody is listening?
Bruce Feldman (12:27 AM)
He needs time for them to absorb that system. Hard to go from 1-11 to 8-4.
Darryl (Oakland, CA)
How about Michael Calvin, former three star recruit, as a legit breakout performer?
Bruce Feldman (12:28 AM)
People get waaaaaaaaay too caught up in that star system. James Lauinaitis was a 3-star guy so was Malcolm Jenkins and Brian Robiskie. I think Jon Vilma was a 2-star.
Justin (Duluth, Georgia)
I'll try it. But we don't play this year. I'll see you in Athens for my VOLS to go in there and ruin all these Dawgs(DOGS) fans hopes and dreams!!
Bruce Feldman (12:29 AM)
Go with some buddies. You'll have a blast.
Adam (Dallas, Tx)
You answer a question about the Big 12 v. SEC that was already answered!!!!! talk about SMU and JUNE JONES!!!!!!! Undefeated in the C-USA in 3 Years BCS BOWL here we come!!!!!
Bruce Feldman (12:29 AM)
I just answered an SMU question.
Rahn Koon (Laurens, South Crarolina)
SIDNEY RICE WAS A 3-STAR
Bruce Feldman (12:30 AM)
exactly so was Greg Hardy. Brent Schaeffer was a 5-star.
JOE
Who is the best safety in the country? Do you think Washington has a chance against USC? They have mnaged to keep it tight the last two years...?
Bruce Feldman (12:31 AM)
Kevin Ellison. running QBs do give USC some trouble and Locker is as dangerous as anyone.
Chris (LA)
Why do almost all recent USC players fail in the NFL? (Polamalu and Tatupu the exceptions)
Bruce Feldman (12:33 AM)
Carson Palmer's a perennial Pro Bowler. Ryan Kalil is starting in his second year. LenDale White is a 1000-yard back.. Are people writing Dwayne Jarrett off already? He should be a rookie this year. It's Mike Williams and Reggie Bush and Leinart have struggled. Every school cranks out a few guys who fizzle.
Justin (Duluth, Georgia)
Have you heard anything about Gerald Williams becoming eligible for my VOLS?
Bruce Feldman (12:33 AM)
Yeah, I think I read some good news about him in Chris Low's SEC blog.
Jacoby (Clemson)
Will Cullen Harper lead Clemson to an ACC Title and BCS win?
Bruce Feldman (12:34 AM)
Maybe..but the OLine needs to jell fast.
Will @ Rapid City, SD
What is your opinion of Joe Ganz and Marlon Lucky?
Bruce Feldman (12:35 AM)
Ganz was really sharp at the end of last year and needs to keep it up. Lucky's a good back. Not sure if he's great though.
Shane (WV)
How will Devine do this year?
Bruce Feldman (12:35 AM)
Great. He's just gotta stay healthy. He's fun to watch.
Ken (Austin, TX)
Does Baylor have a shot against Wake? Do you think Art Briles can turn Baylor around?
Bruce Feldman (12:36 AM)
They'll keep it close I think. Briles needs time. He has strong ties to recruit from but the schedule's pretty tough.
Gene (Suffern,NY)
Bruce, Do you think George Selvie is the best DE in the nation and how high can he go in next years draft?
Bruce Feldman (12:38 AM)
He's in the top 3-4 with Greg Middleton and Mo Evans and if the spirit moves him, Greg Hardy... Selvie's gotta keep trying to bulk up. He's barely 245 and the NFL doesn't draft guys that size unless they run 4.4 in the 1st rd.
Matt (ATL)
Who's the next Calvin Johson?
Bruce Feldman (12:39 AM)
DeAndre Brown at USM is the closest in size, but he's a 4.5 guy not a 4.35 guy although Brown's even a little bigger.
Brandon (Miami)
Will Miami be back when they play Ohio State in 2010?
Bruce Feldman (12:39 AM)
Yeah, I think they'll be back by 2009.
Trey (Elmore, OH)
What do you know about Michigan's new defensive coordinator Scott Schafer? With so many guys back on defense I really think UM's D can keep things together while the offense works out the kinks.
Bruce Feldman (12:40 AM)
They have a lot of talent on D. That might carry them to 8 wins.
Josh (Addis, Louisiana)
LSU wins 10 regular season games this year and the west. No reason we shouldn't.
Bruce Feldman (12:41 AM)
Not sure if the QB play will be good enough for that, especially with some tricky road games.
Glover (Memphis)
I'm just curious, with all the hype about gimmick offenses and with all the stats they put up...What constitutes a "gimmick offense"?
Bruce Feldman (12:41 AM)
great question.. probably defined as something the NFL wouldn't run.
Bruce Feldman (12:42 AM)
Or something that has never won a national title.
Virginia
Have a favorite mascot, Bruce?
Bruce Feldman (12:43 AM)
Ralphie at CU.
Gene (Suffern,NY)
Matt Grothe or Pat White? Who would you rather have with the game on the line?
Bruce Feldman (12:44 AM)
Pat White, but I'd take him over almost every QB. Rutgers played Grothe just to keep and eventually they got to USF. White causes more problems and can do more damage.
Justin (Duluth, Ga.)
Eric Berry for Safety President!!!! If i'm annoying just say so bruce bruce. And you gotta tell that guy there is no next Calvin baby!!
Bruce Feldman (12:45 AM)
I'm sad to say..it took me about five minutes to get that reference and that song is on my ipod. Maybe I'm gettin sleepy.
Jackson (Hollywood, CA)
Hey Bruce I saw you mentioning your favorite food in college towns...where's the love for So Cal's In n out burger???
Bruce Feldman (12:47 AM)
Ya know..this has been a little argument me and my pal Dan, the guy who cheats in golf, have been having of late. I think In n Out is overrated. The fries are nowhere near as good as McDonalds. Yeah the burger's are really good, but I think Chick filA is a better get.
Jamal (Baltimore)
I've been posting questions for half an hour. You're a JERK Bruce!
Bruce Feldman (12:47 AM)
I have not see one question from you yet.sorry. try one more time.
Josh (Mount Vernon, Ohio)
Ohio State: Has coaching played a hand in not properly preparing them during the season? For BCS Games?
Bruce Feldman (12:49 AM)
I guess it has a little. It has to right? I remember talking to CJ Leak, Chris' big brother after the first title game and he remarked how that strategy was probably the worst way to go at his brother by basically letting him pick them apart.
Matt Bend, Oregon
How many sacks will Nick Reed have this year?
Bruce Feldman (12:49 AM)
14.. his DBs give him time to get to QBs too.
Tyler (Berkeley)
Calling In-n-out overrated? Talk about an east coast bias.
Bruce Feldman (12:51 AM)
Easy. I live about as close to the Pacific as possible. No ECB here. Save it for Skip.
Jamal (Baltimore)
What do you think of Penn State's decision to start Clark over Devlin? Do you think they'll play them both this year?
Bruce Feldman (12:52 AM)
Clark's more of a dual threat and I'm sure they're hoping to get back to the Michael Robinson ways. The big mystery is can Clark be as good a leader as Robinson was?
Justin (Clemson, SC)
Bigger impact saturday: bowers or julio?
Bruce Feldman (12:52 AM)
My hunch says Julio although I think his team still loses.
Will (Chicago)
Colt McCoy....give it to me straight, Bruce.
Bruce Feldman (12:53 AM)
Really good QB. Needs a go-to WR to step up. Heard Shipley has had a good camp.
jayson (Sun Valley, ID)
Bruce, How do you think Marve will handle his first start against Tebow and the Gators in the Swamp, fresh off his one game suspension?
Bruce Feldman (12:54 AM)
Not sure. I saw a lot of him while working on Meat Market and I think he's going to be a terrific QB, but if UM stays within 14 of UF I think Cane fans should be pleased.
Zach (Baton Rouge, LA)
Does Ricky Jean Francois have what it takes to replace Glenn Dorsey?
Bruce Feldman (12:55 AM)
He's really good, although Dorsey was great when healthy.
Tim (Birmingham, AL)
Clemson's O Line and RBs or Bama's D Line and Linebackers?
Bruce Feldman (12:55 AM)
Clemson..those RBs are phenomenal.
Jose (Springdale, AR)
Who do you see starting at Qb for USC(trojans) and Auburn at the end of the season?
Bruce Feldman (12:56 AM)
Sanchez and I don't know about Auburn. Maybe Chris Todd.
Brad Pitt (Malibu, CA)
My wife Angelina thinks that after Sanchez leaves USC, Mitch Mustain will take over at QB. Tell her she is crazy because next year the Matt Barkley era begins in THE Coliseum!
Bruce Feldman (12:57 AM)
I think people really underestimate Aaron Corp. He's got a spark to him and the players are high on him, but yeah everyone seems to think Barkley is special.
Gary (Piscataway, NJ)
Bruce, I've been trying for a half hour to get you to talk about Mike Teel and/or Rutgers potential this year...PLEASE SAY SOMETHING!!
Bruce Feldman (12:59 AM)
Good receivers..not sure if Mason Robinson can hold up. I was out there two weeks ago and was impressed by him and I know Schiano thinks Jourdan Brooks can be special. The D will miss Eric Foster. He was so underrated as a DT.
Matt (D.C)
How good is East Carolina really?
Bruce Feldman (1:00 AM)
They play hard and have some athletes. I think losing their RB two weeks ago will hurt and they might start 0-2.
Derrick (Shippensburg,PA)
Best newcomer in the Big10 besides Pryor
Bruce Feldman (1:01 AM)
Watch out for little Martavious odoms at Michigan. He'll make a lot of plays. Heard Rodriguez loves him.
Marc (Woodland Hills, CA)
Speaking of Aaron Corp Bruce...is there any chance that USC goes to the spread offense when/if Corp takes over? Have you seen him run!?!
Bruce Feldman (1:03 AM)
Yeah, he's a heckuva an athlete, but I don't see Sark changing things up that much. Plus it's not like Barkley is a spread guy. Hard to overhaul things for one QB and not the others.
Ben (Columbia, MO)
Bruce, Meat Market rules!!! Any predictions on the Mizzou-Illinois matchup this weekend? I say Mizzou 38, Illinois 21. P.S. You are too nice to these people yelling at you. A true class act you are.
Bruce Feldman (1:04 AM)
Thanks Ben! I think Mizzou's offense is terrific and it'll take some time to replace Mendenhall so I'm on the same page with you.
Jason (Lowell, AR)
What will happen first? Arkansas wins an sec championship or petrino jumps ship?
Bruce Feldman (1:04 AM)
Petrino bolts.
Andy (Pullman, WA)
Yo! What do you think of Wazzu's new coach Paul Wulff? Should I be excited for my Cougs?
Bruce Feldman (1:05 AM)
Everyone raves about the guy, although he really has his work cut out for him.
Matt (Oxford, OH)
I've been trying to get my question up for over an hour and am starting to think that you just don't want to talk about any small conference school not coached by June Jones, but I'll keep trying and hoping that isn't true. So, do my RedHawks beat Vandy and then go on to win the MAC Championship? And gotta give some love to the only school with all 3 starting LB's on the Butkus Watch List
Bruce Feldman (1:06 AM)
I give them a good shot at the upset. Vandy's well coached but they have a lot of holes on the rebuilt Oline.
Wes (Scottsdale, Az)
What happened to the traditional Powerhouse team? Florida State, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame
Bruce Feldman (1:06 AM)
Every program backslides some over time. It's all too cylical.
Chris (Tempe, AZ)
E.T.A. on a defensive Heisman winner? I'm tired of the offense bias. Berry maybe?
Bruce Feldman (1:07 AM)
If Laurinaitis has a great game against USC and leads them to an upset while Beanie Wells doesn't do much maybe his bandwagon builds.
Bruce Feldman (1:08 AM)
OK, I got five minutes left...
Rob, Wisconsin
will the badgers be in a bcs bowl game?
Bruce Feldman (1:08 AM)
I don't think so
jeremy(morgantown, wv)
pat white or major harris? ive got a 8am class and im not gunna stop posting until u answer!
Bruce Feldman (1:09 AM)
I was a huge Major Harris fan, but I think Pat White is even better.
Brad (Omaha, NE)
BRUCE! Before you leave...does Bobby Bowden retire? Does Weatherford get benched for Ponder? Thanks man! have a good night!
Bruce Feldman (1:10 AM)
I think as long as FSU wins at least 7 Bowden might stay.. He still gets to golf a lot and delegate things. I'l say three different FSU QBs play this year.
Taylor (Columbia SC)
Apparently whining about not getting posted helps to have your question posted so yeah, I've been trying for a while now. What's gonna happen with N.C. St/USC tomorrow night?
Bruce Feldman (1:10 AM)
I picked State to keep it close. Having second thoughts about it now.
Erik, Blackwood NJ
Ohio State was ranked #11 or #12 in the coaches poll last season and reached the BCS Title game. Which team outside the top ten has the best chance of reaching the Nat'l Championship.
Bruce Feldman (1:12 AM)
Auburn or maybe Texas Tech as a big longshot.
reilly
BRUCE HOW HIGH DO YOU THINK MAYS WILL GO IN NEXT YEARS DRAFT SHOULD HE STAY HEALTHY AND DECLARE?
Bruce Feldman (1:13 AM)
He could be a top 10 pick. He's sharp and he's an unreal athlete. A legit 6-3, 230 with sub 4,35 speed. Not sure he's going to jump though.
Jesse (Ada, OK)
ESPN after midnight is hellacious! Come on Bruce, your thoughts, what are sam bradford's chances of winning the heisman? will that constitute an undefeated season and big 12 championship?
Bruce Feldman (1:14 AM)
He's a serious candidate ..plus he's working behind an awesome OLine. Doesn't need to be perfect but does need to win the big 12.
Ian Carlin, Pittsburgh PA
What are your feelings on the core of the Michigan offense, namely the development of the upcoming superstar Toney Clemons?
Bruce Feldman (1:15 AM)
I was up there in the spring and I know the coaches like his potential. He just has to be more consistent.
George ( Welch , WV )
Well this is the 33rd time i have asked this so please do this one befor you go How do you think Bill Stewart will do in Morgantown this year
Bruce Feldman (1:16 AM)
very good in the short time but beyond this year, I'm more skeptical.
Bruce Feldman (1:18 AM)
Thanks for all of the questions. It was fun. Check back in later this morning. Lots of good guests. Brad Edwards, the guy who knows more about the BCS than anyone I know, is leading off.
