Buzzmaster (7:44 PM)
Come on back at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday to continue our college football countdown! Brad Edwards kicks things off first thing Thursday morning!
Brad Edwards (9:07 AM)
Sorry I'm a little late. I believe Tom Luginbill will be next at 9:30 ET. Let's go ... it's Gameday!
joe (tallahassee)
if clemson runs the table (or any acc team) will they get a nod to play in the BCS title game?
Brad Edwards (9:10 AM)
The only major-conference team to go undefeated and not play in the BCS title game was Auburn in 2004, and that was because two teams with bigger names and higher preseason rankings (USC and Oklahoma) were also undefeated. Contrary to popular belief, the ACC is still a major conference, so I don't see an undefeated Clemson team being left out unless they run into the same situation that Auburn did.
Matt (Houston)
I keep seeing that BYU and Utah both have an opportunity to be BCS crashers. Do you think one of them is going to have to go undefeated to make that possible?
Brad Edwards (9:14 AM)
It's hard for me to imagine a one-loss team from one of those conferences getting into the BCS unless the one loss came out of conference in a competitive game against a top-10 team. Neither BYU's nor Utah's schedule seems to have an opponent like that, so I do think one of them will have to go undefeated. Is that fair? Probably not. Had BYU lost only once last year instead of twice, that team still would've watched Hawaii play in a BCS game, even though BYU was probably a better team.
Jon (Laguna Beach, CA)
According to the BCS, what are the top 3 conferences?
Brad Edwards (9:17 AM)
There are no conference rankings by the BCS, but if you look at the at-large selections over the 10-year history of the system, the Big Ten and SEC are clearly the conferences that usually get a second bid, and I'd go with the Big 12 as No. 3. Once again, that's in terms of the BCS bowls selecting multiple teams from those conferences. That basically means those conferences have more teams aside from their champion that are good at selling tickets and drawing TV ratings.
Cullen (Saint Louis)
Does Missouri have to go undefeated to make it to the BCS championship game, or would an out of conference loss (lets say Illini) keep there hopes alive.
Brad Edwards (9:21 AM)
That all depends on the type of season it is. There are some seasons when you have to be undefeated to finish in the top two. Last year, even two losses didn't eliminate LSU, and Mizzou certainly would've been in with only one loss. The safe thing is not to lose, but losing the opener to a respectable opponent on a neutral field is as good a loss as there can be if you have to take one.
Ryan (New York, NY)
Since the arrival of the BCS, which conference has the best out of conference winning percentage. Also which has the best bowl winning percentage.
Brad Edwards (9:26 AM)
I hate to judge conferences based on regular-season non-conference records, because there's such inequity in the schedules. The Pac-10, for example, plays the toughest out-of-conference slate pretty much every year. Now, I can tell you that in BCS bowls only over the last 10 years, the SEC has the best record at 11-4 (4-0 in title games), while the ACC has the worst at 1-9 (lost 8 straight). And since ESPN began giving out the Bowl Challenge Cup 6 years ago, the best overall bowl record also belongs to the SEC at 27-17 (.614) ... the Big East is second at 16-13 (.552)
Ben (Omaha, NE)
Am I the only person anywhere that thinks the system we have works fine and isn't sure if a playoff would even truly be an improvement?
Brad Edwards (9:29 AM)
You're not the only one. I know a lot of people who feel that way, and many of them are very powerful in the college football world. The biggest question is how a playoff would ultimately impact the greatest regular season in sports. If it could be capped at four teams, it would probably have no impact on the regular season, but does anyone really think it would stop there? That's where it gets tricky.
Billy (Ada,OK)
People say having one DI-AA or FBS (whatever you want to call it) on the schedule won't kill your BCS numbers if you are in a good conference.Ohio State has Youngstown, Oklahoma plays UT Chattanooga,Georgia plays Georgia Southern, LSU plays App State. Let's say Oklahoma, LSU, and Ohio State go undefeated. Will the quality of the FBS schools then matter as far as who gets in the BCS Title game?
Brad Edwards (9:30 AM)
The formula has changed so that strength of schedule is only a factor in the minds of the voters. If you have a big name and plenty of tradition, all that matters is your final record and whether you won your conference. Nobody cares how many cupcakes you played out of conference. That's just the way it is now.
Brad Edwards (9:31 AM)
Gotta go. My time is up. Enjoy the season, everyone!
Tom Luginbill (9:32 AM)
Hey everyone, Tom Luginbill here, recruiting or CFB questions are welcome. Thanks to Brad. Here we go, another great season ahead of us. Let's get to your questions
Roman (Miami, FL)
What are your thoughts on Miami starting a freshman quarterback??
Tom Luginbill (9:34 AM)
Well, it isn't an ideal situation, but both jacory Harris and Robert Marve are talented guys. Marve will be back at the helm after his suspension is up. I think he has a chance to be very good and Miami is my sleeper pick in the ACC to surprise. They will be good on defense and frosh will be expected to contribiute at a lot of spots. The QB will be key for them whetehr it is Harris or Marve.
Jeff (Evans, GA)
Georgia is ranked #1, yet everyone seems to be picking Florida to win the SEC this year...what gives? forget Georgia's hard schedule...who has the better team from top to bottom?
Tom Luginbill (9:36 AM)
I feel people are very worried about some holes in Georgia's roster right now and the fact that all the attention is being placed on them will cause too high of an expectation level for them to handle. Florida is just as talented and is smiling all the way to the bank while all the attention is being placed on Georgia. Florida can fly under the radar for a bit.
Ryan (DC)
What's the outlook for the Gamecocks of South Carolina this year?
Tom Luginbill (9:37 AM)
It all depends on their QB situation. you could argue they will be the best team in the SEC on defense. If they can muster some consistency and points on offense, Spurrier's group could really surprise. Don't sleep on the Gamecocks.
Virginia Charlotte
LSU is looking at a great recruiting class so far. What are your feelings on that and their strength on the field for 2009?
Tom Luginbill (9:39 AM)
Recruits are flicking to baton Rouge off the national title run and speed and athleticism is abundant. I played for LSU coordinator gary Crowton at GT and I can tell you he wants a guy at QB that can adjust on the fly, call things at the line, make calls and just move the chains. You don't have to be a hero in that offense. Their success will depend on how their QB comes along. Don't be surprised to see freshman QB Jordan Jefferson either. They love him.
George P. Burdell (Atlanta)
Over or under 7 wins for Georgia Tech? Over or under 7 fumbles tonight for the Jackets?
Tom Luginbill (9:41 AM)
Over. I thinkt he Jackets will stun people with that offense because it takes so much time to prepare for it and they have a good defense. Watch out because Paul Johnson can coach and he now has players!
Toledo, OH
Ohio State fans are pretty sure Berry will commit. How are Corey Adams and Marcus Hall feeling though? A couple of monnths ago, Hall was a lock, now Illinois looks to be a player. Also is Corey Adams high on the Bucks?
Tom Luginbill (9:42 AM)
I believe in the end, hall and Berry will end up in Columbus, however, Adams will be tougher to pull from the west coast. He does state that OSU is high on his list though. Winner of OSU/USC could be a factor with him.
Rob (Omaha, NE)
Did Nebraska move their coaches' lounge to Texas over the summer? lots of recruiting getting done down there. Impressions on the new staff's efforts so far?
Tom Luginbill (9:45 AM)
As well it should be. Not just Texas, but California and Arizona too. There just aren't enough good players to build an elite program by just recruiting Nebraska and the plains states. This is a positive sign and an even more positive sign is that Nebraska is moving away from recruiting JUCO's too heavily which I believe got them in trouble in the first place.
Jonny (Malibu, CA)
Is USC's 2009 recruiting class by far the best (at least so far)?
Tom Luginbill (9:46 AM)
Right now, we have them at No. 1. great speed, needs being met, size, athleticism-- the usual suspects for the Trojans. The rich keep getting richer I guess.
Billy (Ada, OK)
Let's talk a little recruiting. In a situation like Oklahoma, that is loaded with RB's, why in the world do they get commits like Justin Johnson and Jeremie Calhoun who know they are going to have to wait a few years to have a chance? Are kids actually wanting to just be a part of a winner now and is the individualism me-myself-I age starting to end?
Tom Luginbill (9:48 AM)
With RB's, I think kids are now seeing you better have more than one or two that is ready to play at any time. Also, Like USC has done, many programs are using different kids for different situations that enahnce their strengths and styles. Just like Oklahoma is doing with Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray. There really seems to be enough touches for eveyrone these days.
Matt (Kendallville,IN)
Who will Notre Dame's breakout receiver be this year? Kamara, Tate, or Floyd?
Tom Luginbill (9:51 AM)
Floyd will make a splash, but remember Tate and Kumara are still puppies just going into their sophomore season and have huge years ahead of them if you ask me. ND will be improved just off of schedule alone, not to mention a more experienced roster.
Jim (Columbus)
Where do you see Ohio State's recruiting class ending up? This is inferring that Hall and Berry are locks and either Sims, Hageman, Martinez, Adams, or Marlon Brown commit as well.
Tom Luginbill (9:52 AM)
If what you said happens, top three. They only have a few more scholarships left. We are not that enamored with the lower third portion of their class. Those guys in our opinion are not OSU caliber.
Ryan (Easley, SC)
Hey Tom, why does Kenny McKinley at SC get such little love? It seems like all he does is perform. Is it just too much talent in the SEC that overshadows?
Tom Luginbill (9:53 AM)
He doesn't have great QB production and that hurts him.
matt georgia
does tyrod taylor redshirting affect the hokies chances with qb recuit kevin newsome?
Tom Luginbill (9:54 AM)
That depends on whether or not you think VT is recruiting him as a QB. We feel as do many coaches that he may end up at saftey or linebacker or even tailback.
Joe (Huntsville,AL)
Auburn never seems to get the 5 star guys, but they are always a top 10 team. Do they have a better ranking system or are they just good at developing players?
Tom Luginbill (9:57 AM)
Outstanding question. This is one area that I think fans underestimate about the recruiting process...it's not all about the elite guys, it's about all the players you sign, top to bottom and even the best classes are only going to have between 7-10 elite guys and the rest are just going to be very good, potentially great players in time. Coaching and developing and having an eye for late bloomers is what Auburn does best. Top 100 or 150 lists are not what college rosters are made up of. It's the guys behind that who are making the roster strong.
Steve (Raleigh, NC)
Which true freshman do you think will have the largest impact this year? Julio Jones, Terelle Pryor, and Darrel Scott come to mind.
Tom Luginbill (9:59 AM)
Julio Jones, AJ Green and DaQuan Bowers are actually the guys I see making the biggest impact due to talent and need of their respective teams.
Tom Luginbill (9:59 AM)
Well, my time is now up. Enjoy the weekend and enjoy CFB all year long. Thanks!
Brett Edgerton (10:04 AM)
OK, college football fans, looks like it's my turn. First-time chatter here, so play nice...
Trey SC
Can Coastal Carolina beat Penn State this weekend? CCU does have a Wake Forest transfer at QB...and we know how much everyone loves WF this year
Brett Edgerton (10:07 AM)
Riley Skinner isn't walking through that door, Trey. Coastal's program is simply too young to win a game like that. But since you brought up Wake (and you're right, I love them!), how about this one...the Deacons have won 20 games over the last 2 yrs. In its previous 106 seasons, Wake had never won more than 19 in any THREE-year stretch! Can Jim Grobe coach or what?
Brandon (Lincoln,NE)
What are your thoughts on Lou Holtz picking ND to go to a BCS bowl game, I mean are you kidding me.
Brett Edgerton (10:10 AM)
As someone who has worked closely with Lou for four years, and who is in the studio with him every Saturday as he closely monitors the Irish, I can tell you that the feelings are genuine. He truly believes it. Do I? Um, no. I'll go with 8-4 at best.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
Man I know the Orange are down, but for the past 2 days there has been NO TALK of the Orange...should I take that as a hint that we should expect more of the same from the Greg Robinson era this year?
Brett Edgerton (10:12 AM)
If by more of the same, you mean a once-proud program spiraling into irrelevance, then YES! Wait, that's probably not the answer you were looking for. But sorry Steve, I just don't see it. I honestly look at the schedule and don't see more than 2 or 3 wins. Greg should probably start polishing off that resume.
Logan (Sutherland,NE)
Whats your prediction on Nebraska Vs Virginia Tech... since VT has lost alot of there "star" players.. and its in Memorial Stadium so there's a slight edge to Nebraska right??
Brett Edgerton (10:15 AM)
I'm with you, Logan...I'd give the slight edge to the home team right now. I'm not high on the Hokies this year. Their schedule is ideal, so I can still see them winning 8 or 9 games. But I think they lose in Lincoln. Not a big fan of Tech's offense...I say this is the coming-out party for Bo Pelini's defensive wizardry.
Brian (Philly)
Brett, The washington Huskies have the toughest schedule in the country, and if QB Jake Locker wins a lot of those games i think he should get serious Heisman consideration. What do you think?
Brett Edgerton (10:18 AM)
I would agree with that, Brian. There's only one slight problem...Washington isn't winning a lot of those games.
Jesse (Ada, OK)
what are sam bradford's chances of winning the heisman? will that constitute an undefeated season and big 12 championship?
Brett Edgerton (10:21 AM)
Jesse, I honestly don't think Bradford is getting enough Heisman attention. Do most people outside Big 12 country know he set NCAA freshman records for TD passes (36) and comp pct (almost 70%)? OU's schedule is ideal for an undefeated run. If that's the case, you'd have to believe Bradford will be right there in the discussion.
Matt (Athens, GA)
What's the toughest back-to-back for any team in the country this season? I'm having a hard time finding something worse the UGA going to LSU and then the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (strike that name from the record).
Brett Edgerton (10:22 AM)
I'm having a tough time too, Matt. There's no way there's a tougher 2 weeks than that. Not a chance. And let's not forget, UGA goes to Lexington a week after that and to Auburn a week after that. Good grief!
Kevin (Houston, Tx) HOOK 'EM!
Everyone is talking Texas Tech up this year. How can that be? Sure they have that gimmicky offense with a star receiver (Crabtree), but they've never had a defense, and 9 returning starters from a horrible defense isn't something to be cheering about.
Brett Edgerton (10:25 AM)
I'm not fully on Tech bandwagon quite yet, but I think the Red Raider D might end up being a little better than you think. It might not have seemed like it, Kevin, but that defense actually was 3rd in the Big 12 in fewest yds allowed last year.
Mike(Atlanta GA)
Florida has two weeks off before Tennessee this year. Is a two week break too much this early in the season?
Brett Edgerton (10:27 AM)
With the amount of injuries Florida has already had (Harvin, Spikes, etc), I don't think an early-season bye is a bad thing in Gainesville. By the way, Tennessee fans are sure to love this one...every SEC East team except punching bag Vandy has two weeks to prepare for the Vols. Yikes.
Drew (Greensboro, NC)
I keep reading that UNC will be an improved team in the ACC Coastal this year. Do you think this has more to do with player development by Davis, or a perceived down year by some of the other programs in the Conference?
Brett Edgerton (10:28 AM)
I'll take the easy route and say a little of both. Butch is a recruiting machine and he's brought in the talent, but the Coastal is a bit of a joke this year and the schedule for UNC is ideal. I think the really bright days for the Heels come in the next 2 or 3 years, but with that schedule, a bowl game is nearly a lock this season.
Shawn, Simi Valley CA
All the TN schools aren't getting much prop out there. VOLS are flying under the radar, MTSU is on the uptick and Memphis could win CUSA.
Brett Edgerton (10:29 AM)
As a Tennessee native (and no, I don't know Shawn), I had to make this my final question. After a banner year in college basketball for the Volunteer State, I do think it could be a fun fall in football. There's quietly a lot of optimism in Knoxville as everyone continues to love on Florida and UGA nationally. And Tommy West continues to do a solid job at Memphis. As for Vandy, the Commodores are bound to break that bowl streak...or not. Hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Thanks for the questions, everyone. Now let's talk some App State football! Can they pull off another shocker?
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Josh, Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Josh Johnson (10:29 AM)
I'm excited to the up coming season as I know you are. I'm happy to answer your questions, so let's get started! not really, I spend time with the Lord and spend time by myself to go over plays and situations in my head.
Bud (charlotte, nc)
What do you feel like will be a respectful performance by Appalachian this weekend?
Josh Johnson (10:30 AM)
Winning, that is out number one goal. We have a great coaching staff and we have prepared for this day. The team has a great work ethic and we feel like we can go down there and get a win. We don't want to sell ourselves short. We set high goals and that's what we strive and push for.
Jon (Los Angeles, CA)
Where is the best city/place you have gone and played at in your entire life?
Josh Johnson (10:32 AM)
Last year in the Big House against Michigan. It was a great experience for my team and to get a win made it even better.
Justin (Chicago)
Josh- Whats your favorite college football movie? Rudy? Necessary Roughness? Or, the Program?
Josh Johnson (10:34 AM)
I've always been a big fan of The Program. I haven't seen it in awhile, but it's a great movie.
Andy(Saline,MI)
hey josh, i hope you and appy st beat lsu and also good luck this year.
Josh Johnson (10:34 AM)
Thank You
Trey SC
Josh, If you didn't go to App State, which school would you most likely be at?
Josh Johnson (10:36 AM)
App St. is the only school for me. I played in this same type of offense in high school and this is close to home that my family can come watch me play.
Eugene (State College, PA)
Just how good is Armanti Edwards?
Josh Johnson (10:39 AM)
I don't know where to begin. He makes the perfect read and he puts the ball where it needs to be. He's just an all around great player. He's always calm and he just gets the job done. I see him playing at the next level one day.
Ryan (Birmingham)
Josh- Are you ready to experienc Baton Rouge?
Josh Johnson (10:41 AM)
Yes, as a team we are. We have worked hard and we are ready to go down and compete in one of the loudest stadiums in all of college football.
Jim (Charlotte, NC)
Josh, I read your bio and saw that you were also a great HS basketball player. Why did you choose Football instead?
Josh Johnson (10:42 AM)
Football was always more exciting to me. There is nothing like scoring a touchdown and being out there with my teammate. You never know what's going to happen from play to play.
Ben (Omaha, NE)
Do you guys have any tricks up your sleeve for this weekend in Baton Rouge?
Josh Johnson (10:43 AM)
No, we're just going to play hard.
Marty (Elkin, NC)
Given the departure of the Starting Safeties and Defensive Backs, How is Macduffie looking at starting corner? P.S. The Rock needs more seats!!
Josh Johnson (10:45 AM)
MacDuffie is a great athlete. I think he can step up and get the job done. He has the size and speed to do his part.
Alex (Philly)
Hey josh how much has campus life changed since that win against Michigan I'm sure recruiting is up about 1000%
Josh Johnson (10:46 AM)
It has changed a bunch. There is a lot more confidence in our team going into LSU. More folks are making the trip this year to hopefully see us beat LSU.
Josh Johnson (10:47 AM)
I want to thank the Lord for everything that he has done for me. Thanks to all my great teammates that have taught me things on and off the field throughout my time at App State. Thanks to the fans for all the questions.
Buzzmaster (10:48 AM)
Alright folks, UCF's Joe Burnett is up next!
Buzzmaster (11:04 AM)
Sorry for the delay everyone, Joe should be here soon.
Buzzmaster (11:09 AM)
Alright folks, Joe will not be able to make it today, but up next we have ESPN.com blogger Heather Dinich ready to take all your college football questions!
Heather Dinich (11:16 AM)
Hey everyone, HD here to take your questions. Just made my Week 1 predictions for the ACC. Ready to rock here in Atlanta.
Brody: (Cleveland - OH)
Heather, how badly will Wake beat Baylor tonight?
Heather Dinich (11:17 AM)
Brody, I picked Wake kto win 31-14 I think. Their new coach uses a lot of different offensive packages and personnell groupings, but the Deacs' defense can handle it.
peter (Charlotte, N.C.)
Does N.C.State Have a legitimate chance tonight and if so how do they pull it off
Heather Dinich (11:19 AM)
Hi Peter ... Yes, the Pack has a legit chance, but a large part of that will obviously depend on how Russell Wilson plays. These teams have a lot of similar question marks.
Tim (Denver)
Heather, any plans to go the the Varsity while in Atlanta? Whadday have? Whaddaya have?
Heather Dinich (11:19 AM)
Ha ... drove past it twice yesterday. I think I might hit the treadmill instead, as tempting as the grease might be.
George P. Burdell (Atlanta)
What do you see this season from Georgia Tech? Are they bowl worthy?
Heather Dinich (11:20 AM)
George, I'll know more after tonight, but I'll tell you this -- I talked to Paul Johnson this week and it sounds like the players are eager to prove people wrong. That said, Paul told me he can understand why people like me are questioning them. I'd say next year for the bowl.
Tom (Columbia SC)
What will the final score be in the SC/NCSt and Bama/Clemson games?
Heather Dinich (11:21 AM)
Check the ACC blog for my predictions, and then feel free to laugh at me on Sunday.
Christian(Tampa Florida)
Who do you have in the ECU vs. Va Tech?...I am undecided on who to choose in College pick em
Heather Dinich (11:22 AM)
Close one, very close. If there is an upset in the ACC this week, this is it, but I'm still going with the Hokies. Better QB and after last year, they know what to expect.
Marshall: (Canton, OH)
Do you think that Miami will ever return to being one of the best teams in the country?
Heather Dinich (11:22 AM)
If they keep bringing in recruiting classes like this one, heck yeah.
Kevin (Fairfax VA)
My question is for Heather Dinich. You don't seem to think too much of Virginia Tech. Any chance I could invite you to tailgate with us for a game -- perhaps MD on a Thursday night? -- and truly experience why Hokie Nation loves the team so much?
Heather Dinich (11:23 AM)
Hang on, let me find her ...
Sam: (Athens, GA)
As a UGA student, every time Florida loses I am filled with joy. Any chance Florida State or Miami beats UF this year?
Heather Dinich (11:24 AM)
Sorry UGA, maybe next year.
Matt (Ft. Wayne, IN)
How many wins do you give Notre Dame this year with their weak schedule?
Heather Dinich (11:24 AM)
This team has me baffled. The Irish HAVE to be better, and they will, but how much? I'd say a mediocre bowl season.
Eric (Cape Coral, Fl)
Why are you so down on Miami, I understand they have had a couple of bad years, but you seem to go out of your way to say something negaive about the Hurricanes.
Heather Dinich (11:25 AM)
Sorry, but they won two ACC games last year and have seven players suspended for the first game. I'm heading there Monday, though, if it makes you feel better. I even heard they might let me in ...
Brad(Tuscaloosa,AL)
Do you think Alabama will win this weekend or will Clemson do their usual?
Heather Dinich (11:26 AM)
I honestly think Clemson is the better team. As for the Tigers doing their "usual" ... I picked 'em to win, so odds are they lose.
Chip (Blacksburg, VA)
Miami recruits well year in and year out. They always seem to have a top 5-10 class. Why is this years any different than the players currently on the team?
Heather Dinich (11:28 AM)
You can start with the quarterback.
Christian(Tampa Florida)
Do you think at the end of the year Matt Grothe of USF will be considered among the top players for the heisman?
Heather Dinich (11:29 AM)
ehh, I really like him, I do. George Sevlie, too, but I think there are too many other candidates. He's not on my top five.
Nate (Athens, Georgia)
What is the deal with USC getting so much respect? The way I see it, they have an unproven quarterback and a lot of other question marks on offense. They have a good defense, but should they really be ranked this high and expected to contend for a BCS Championship without proven offensive firepower?
Heather Dinich (11:30 AM)
Dude, seriously? Their defense was second in the nation last year. They've got playmakers all over the place on offense who are proven.
Chris (Miami, Fl)
Heather, where did you go to school?
Heather Dinich (11:30 AM)
Indiana. Thanks for the easy Q.
Joe S., Washington DC
Heather, what do you think the Terps chances this year are of having some major upsets? We have some depth at the QB position, and our your RBs Greene and Scott have power and quickness. Heyward Bey is lighting quick, and Portis (if he ever read the playbook) would be fantastic with a shotgun option attack. Navarre is going to be a beast. I don't think that the Terps are getting as much credit as they deserve. Look out for the Terps. We are going to suprise some people in the ACC this year. Oh, and we are going to go into Vtech and cream them on Thursday night football. It's going to be glorious.
Heather Dinich (11:31 AM)
Joe -- Watch Megette at RB, but yes, this Maryland team should surprise some folks. Portis is going to make an impact on this team.
Trey (Columbia, Missouri)
Hey- who do you like in the Heisman?
Heather Dinich (11:33 AM)
Hey -- In no particular order, Knowshon Moreno, Beanie Wells, Tim Tebow, Michael Crabtree, Chase Daniel
Brandon (Atlanta, GA)
With Paul Johnson's new option debuting this evening, should Georgia Tech fans be a little worried about an embarrassing loss to Jacksonville State and Ryan-Troublemaker-Perrilloux?
Heather Dinich (11:34 AM)
I don't think Georgia Tech fans have any reason to be concerned tonight.
Trevor( Miami,FL)
do you belive all the hype that robert marve will be the starter no matter how well harris plays tonight. I hope not I think harris is going to bring Miami back to a top notch program.
Heather Dinich (11:35 AM)
I do believe it. Randy Shannon already took a chance on losing Marve's trust by suspending him. He can't afford to yank the carpet from under him again.
Ross (Trenton, NJ)
What would it take for you and others in the media to actually say good things about Miami?
Heather Dinich (11:36 AM)
Hey, I talked about their fabulous graduation rates this summer. But to answer your question, wins.
Greg (Boston)
I know they don't play in the ACC but any thoughts on Josh Haden, the true freshman starter up at BC this year?
Heather Dinich (11:37 AM)
I talked to a lot of people in Chestnut Hill and they like Haden, said he brings a speed and explosiveness even Whitworth and Callender didn't have. Plus, as Chris Crane pointed out, he's shorter, so defenses will have a tough time keeping an eye on him behind the line.
steven (Miami, FL)
hurricanes upset the gators! what do you think about that?
Heather Dinich (11:38 AM)
I think you're nuts.
Jake, (New York)
heather, How come the ACC got so much hype a few years ago and now they barely get to a BCS game and have not or will not be in any Championship games for years to come?
Heather Dinich (11:40 AM)
Because a few years ago they were adding Virginia Tech, Miami and BC. There are tons of reasons for the ACC's struggles ... look at how many coaching changes there were recently. Look at recruiting classes that didn't pan out.
Kris, PA
Anybody that doesn't have Pat White in his top 5 Heisman candidates is a fraud. Did you watch him destroy Oklahoma? With 700-some yards, he will become the NCAA's all-time leading rusher at QB, and he'll most likely be WVU's all-time leading rusher, total yards, completion percentage, and passing efficiency leader after this year. Not to mention he's a proven winner on the big stage. Some of you all need to pull your heads out. Seriously.
Heather Dinich (11:42 AM)
Oh he's good, you're right, but how much attention will he get w/o Steve Slaton?
Billy(Ada,OK)
Better RB Mighty Mite: Eugene Jarvis or Noel Devine?
Heather Dinich (11:43 AM)
Ooh, great question. I think on paper it's Jarvis, no? But I've seen Devine and think you have to give it to him. Not that Jarvis hasn't racked up some yards against the big boys.
GutsyGator, Pensacola, Fl
Dear Heather - Why do you think that most fans say Tebow can't win the big games? If I am not mistaken, the Gators were ahead or tied with other programs that they lost to last season and the defense let them down. Give the boy (ok MAN MAN) a defense to work with and watch him win another He15man and a NC! Your thoughts?
Heather Dinich (11:44 AM)
My thoughts on Tebow -- Not gonna win the Heisman because his numbers won't be as good as last year because somebody else will shoulder some of that load. There's no way his body could stand another season like last year. Not in the SEC.
Rob (Baltimore)
Can Daryll Clark produce Michael Robinson like results at Penn St.? Should they have gone with Devlin instead?
Heather Dinich (11:46 AM)
Do you really want Michael Robinson results? There's a reason he's not a QB right now.
Tim (Pottsville, PA)
What games are you going to be attending this weekend?
Heather Dinich (11:46 AM)
USC/Virginia
Connor (J-Ville, NC)
Hey Heather, love your blog. Anyways, doo you believe Tom O'Brian can bring the Pack to an ACC championship during his tenure? I love his first recruiting class, and think he can start to build NC State into a ACC powerhouse. Your thoughts?
Heather Dinich (11:47 AM)
I'm not sure I'd go as far as an ACC powerhouse, but I do think Tom O'Brien is the guy to make the program an annual contender.
rahn (South Carolina)
PLEASE TELL EVERYONE HOW SOUTH CAROLINA WILL HAVE A TOP 10 DEFENSE IN THE NATION THIS YEAR
Heather Dinich (11:48 AM)
Didn't they have one of the worst run defenses in the country last year?
George P. Burdell (Atlanta)
Your thoughts on GT's Michael Johnson and his freakish nature. How much trouble will Ryan Perrilloux have with him?
Heather Dinich (11:49 AM)
One of the main reasons I picked the Yellow Jackets in this game. The new defensive scheme will free up Johnson to rush from the edge. Perrilloux better be on his toes.
David -The SLC- (Athens, GA)
Please answer me- I'm in class and I need to take notes, but I want to hear this first. Tell me now that UGA is preseason #1 we can get Gameday back in Athens. They havent been here since like 1998 or something like that. Is there any hope that Gameday makes this bright eyed boy's dream come true? GATOR FANS WEAR JEAN SHORTS!
Heather Dinich (11:50 AM)
Hahahaha ... Sorry, man, I've got no pull over where Herbie and those guys go.
GoEers - Titusville Florida
Pat White Should be at the minimum of top three in Heisman watch. How could he be considered any less than this with a #1 veteran offensive line and a tandem of options at tailback/superbacks in Noel Devine and Jock Sanders. Don't forget about Pat White's ability to throw it deep if it's there or tuck and run. Remember Oklahoma Game - He burnt them both ways!
Heather Dinich (11:51 AM)
I hear ya.
zack (boone, nc)
any chance we will see a repeat of last year and app state upset lsu?
Heather Dinich (11:52 AM)
Heck no. I don't care who LSU's quarterback is. No way they're gonna let that happen again. App State will hang around for a quarter or two and then come back down to reality.
Todd (Jacksonville, FL)
Please jusitfy how you can say FSU offensive line is the worst in the ACC? They had two freshman All-Americans and they are coached by one of the best o-line coaches in the country. I think it was absolutly idiotic to put them last.
Heather Dinich (11:54 AM)
Um, because they were freshmen? Because not one junior or senior was on that line for the first time in school history? Because Rick Trickett confirmed it's going to be one of his most challenging coaching jobs in decades? Hey, you should be thanking me. I gave them more motivation than Miami or Florida ever could and they'll be better for it.
chase (wilmington, nc)
as a hokie fan i'm nervous about the game at nebraska. what's your prediction?
Heather Dinich (11:54 AM)
Haven't gotten that far yet, Chase, and it's a game I'm not quite sure on, either. I'll get back to you on that one.
BayouBengal (Baton Rouge)
Heather, do you think that LSU's quarterback situation will keep them out of the SEC Championship game
Heather Dinich (11:57 AM)
It could, but I think Florida will play a role in that, too.
rahn (South Carolina)
How do think bowers will do Sat.?
Heather Dinich (11:58 AM)
I think he'll make a few freshmen mistakes, but he'll play 25-30 snaps and somewhere in there make people say, "whoa."
Ryan Boone NC
App State 20 LSU 17
Heather Dinich (11:58 AM)
You heard it here first, folks.
Brian (Irvine, CA)
Buckeyes or Trojans? And could Mustain lead SC to the BCS if Sanchez remains on this wave of injuires?
Heather Dinich (11:59 AM)
Trojans, and last I heard Aaron Corp was the backup, but I think Sanchez will be ok, despite his recently rocky performance in practice.
Chris (Annapolis, MD)
Clemson, Clemson, Clemson... they're all anyone is talking about this year in the ACC -- and justifiably so. But it's long been my opinion that Tommy Bowden is the least "clutch" coach in the ACC, constantly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Forget the talent -- is Tommy ready to take that next step, or are we destined for another year of the "gosh, what just happened" confused face???
Heather Dinich (12:01 PM)
I've said this before and I'll say it again -- there is absolutely no excuse for Tommy Bowden not to win big this season. Until something else happens to prove otherwise, I'm going to be the optimist, although I feel a little loney in that role.
Beau (Chicago)
Heather, why exactly is Washington's schedule so difficult. They are playing in a somewhat mediocre Pac Ten with only USC being a true championship contender. Has Washington really fallen so much that the likes of BYU are enough to scare the crap out of UW fans?
Heather Dinich (12:02 PM)
Yeah, that's a tough one. I talked to Willingham this winter, and he was very positive, but clearly this is a critical season for him. I really like their schedule and their quarterback and I think Willingham is due a break.
Heather Dinich (12:03 PM)
Alright guys, my time is up. Enjoy the rest of the marathon chat and tonight's games. Back to bloggin' ...
Buzzmaster (12:14 PM)
Thanks Heather!
Buzzmaster (12:14 PM)
Small programming note: we've bumped Todd Blackledge to 2:30. So, next up is Everette Brown from Florida State.
Buzzmaster (12:16 PM)
So, we've got about 15 minutes until Everette shows up. What's going on everyone?
Troy (Chatsworth Georgia)
With all the problems my goergia bulldogs have had can they still get a shot at the national championship?
Buzzmaster (12:18 PM)
We're not even one game into the season and we're already talking about ''all the problems'' a team has had?
Austin: Bonner Springs, Kansas
I am in school. slacking off.
Tate (Las Vegas)
Pretending to work :)
Matt (South Bend, IN)
Hoping and praying Notre Dame doesn't go 3-9 again this year Buzz, you?
Chuck (Woodhaven, MI)
What do you expect from Michigan's offense this season?
Buzzmaster (12:19 PM)
I think it'll be a growing year for Michigan. But Rich Rodriguez knows what he's doing. I think they'll take their lumps this year but will be just fine in the long run.
nick
Season starts here sat just tryin to sleep at nite
Josh (Cathedral of Learning)
Cheating on...err, I mean taking a quiz!
Perry (Lexington, KY)
What's going on is 4 straight days of college football! Praise the Pigskin Gods!

I'm counting down the hours until I'm playing on the field in St. Louis as a part of the Marching Illini, the best band in the land! Man, I love the fall...
Buzzmaster (12:20 PM)
Nice! Have fun out there this weekend, Dan.
Ryan (Tallahassee, FL)

Jimmy (Philly)
GO BULLDOGS!!!
Justin (Chicago)
Oh, Buzz...it's you again.
Griffin (iowa city)
Thinking of ways about how iowa will beat pitt
Ty (Detroit, MI)
Don't you think everyone is playing a dangerous game discounting Michigan? Two things that will always be in Ann Arbor are talent and pride, I would not want to play Michigan come October once they get their feet wet in the new O.
Buzzmaster (12:21 PM)
I agree. Sure maybe they won't be as good as usual, but it's still Michigan. Anyone totally counting them out is just being silly.
Matt (Houston)
Counting down the hours until LSU shows Michigan how a real powerhouse takes care of a I-AA school.
Buzzmaster (12:22 PM)
Careful now. I wouldn't want you to eat your words.
Oklahoma city
Oklahoma will go 12-0, and beat USC in the national championship!!!!BOOMER SOONER!!!
Chris (Charleston, SC)
7 hrs., 38 minutes. I cant freaking wait
Buzzmaster (12:22 PM)
Thanks for keeping it PG.
Matt (South Bend, IN)
amen Matt from Houston
Mike (Boston, MA)
No more Florida questions, I want to keep them "under" the radar...
Taylor Little Rock, AR
I don't understand why people talk about South Carolina. They won't finish anywhere near the top. They are at best 3rd in the East and that is if Tennessee has a down year.
Bernard (Princeton, NJ)
Sorry Dan, the line starts with The Pennsylvania State Marching Blue Band and the rest are 2nd best... The Drums Are Out!
Zack (Syracuse)
Syracuse's marching band is better then Illinois.Thanks.
Justin (DC)
Hey Buzz...what game are you most looking forward to this year that isn't OSU/USC?
Buzzmaster (12:23 PM)
People are going to laugh...But I want to see Florida and Hawaii this weekend.
Tate (Las Vegas)
Taylor, Don't count on Tennessee having a 'down' year :)
Nate (Madison)
I just have this weird feeling that ASU is going to give USC a run for it's money for the PAC-10 crown.
Chris (Columbia, Sc)
We talk about our football team, cause there isn't anything to say about our basketball team unfortunatly
Jimmie (Soho)
Grambling State is THE BEST MARCHING BAND EVER!!!
Ryan: Richmond, VA
Thoughts on the Hokies redshirting Tyrod? In your opinion, does this make us a weaker team not having him out on the field? Should we expect the typical Gelnnon of years past....not getting the job done?
Buzzmaster (12:25 PM)
Ouch...Glennon is a senior and he's going to play. So do you want to waste a year of Tyrod on him playing a part-time role? Why not red-shirt him and save him for when he's the full-time QB?
Buzzmaster (12:26 PM)
We're five minutes away from Everette Brown from FSU! Send in those questions.
Tate (Las Vegas)
Buzz... the FL/HI game will be good, but man I can't wait to see Alabama represent the SEC and beat Clemson!
Buzzmaster (12:26 PM)
That's another one.
Tyler (San Diego)
Joe Mcknight will be the next reggie bush. mark my words
Jon (Atlanta GA)
Many think the GT is going to have a awful year. I've seen what Paul Johnson can do. I contrary to most beleifs, think that Tech will surprise a few teams. I foresee them winning 7-8 games. What is you thought on GT and thier outlookf for the season?
Dan (Urbana, IL)
Illinois Mizzou game. Enough said. And props to all bands out there, we're the heart and soul of college football.
Buzzmaster (12:28 PM)
That's another good game.
Bob (Atlanta)
Counting down to the start of another CFB season!
Chris (Charleston, SC)
7 hours 32 minutes.... getting closer
Buzzmaster (12:28 PM)
Here's Everette!
Everette Brown (12:30 PM)
Thank ESPN for having me. I'm looking forward to answering all your questions.
joe (Gainesville Fl)
Everette how do you think FSU will match up against the power offense of the Gators?
Everette Brown (12:31 PM)
Our defense this year can be as good as we want to be. Florida has a lot of options but we just have to make sure we are prepared to play them. As a team we look forward to playing then and hopefully getting the win.
Matt (South Bend, IN)
Everette, besides yourself who should we look out for on the 'Noles defense?
Everette Brown (12:32 PM)
I think you should look out for the whole defense, especially entire secondary. They all have the talent and speed to get the job done. They have been together for two years now, so they should work well together.
Charles (Columbia, SC)
Hey Everette, do us Gamecock fans a solid - dash Clemson's ACC and NC dreams, will ya? Come on, you want it, your team wants it, your coach wants it...and beat Florida, too, while you're at it, lol. Wadda ya say?
Everette Brown (12:33 PM)
(laughing) We are preparing for a great season and we are just going to take it one game at a time.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Everette, I'm jacked the season is finally here. When you watch games, are you watching them as more of a student of the game, or a fan?
Everette Brown (12:35 PM)
It depends on who I'm watching. Outside the ACC I'm a fan. ACC teams I'm usually looking at it as more of a student of the game.
Ben (Chicago, IL)
Everette, it seems like the Noles are pretty thin on both sides of the line, especially for the first 3 games of the year. How have you guys coped with injuries this off-season and have you had to take it easy to keep from more injuries?
Everette Brown (12:36 PM)
Injuries are part of the game. As a whole we have to step up and just play hard. It will be great when we get everyone back, but for now we just have to play hard.
Ryan (Jennings)
Everette, what has it been like having the JUCO guys coming in and how do you think they will do playing on this level?
Everette Brown (12:37 PM)
The JUCO guys come in with something to prove and that only makes the team better. They want to show that they can play at this level and now they have the chance.
Nate (San Antonio, TX)
Everette, did some research and noticed that your from Stantonsburg, NC. Whats your take as a student of the game ... who you got this weekend. Appy St or LSU?
Everette Brown (12:39 PM)
I haven't been paying attention to the game that are coming on this weekend. We are still in camp and working. Both teams and good and it should be a good game.
joe (Gainesville Fl)
Everette, I wish yall good luck against Miami i hope you beat the snot out of them. I'm a Gator fan but i think we all hate miami lol.
Tate (Las Vegas)
Everette, Which teams were you a fan of growing up?
Everette Brown (12:41 PM)
I was a Florida State fan. I watched them growing up and that's one of the reasons why I'm here. I like UNC in college basketball, Redskins and 49ers in the NFL.
chet b (bellingham WA)
what do you think your record will be at the end of the season
Everette Brown (12:42 PM)
We will be undefeated!
Jonathan (Bedford, MA)
Everette, which team or player is the toughest you've faced?
Everette Brown (12:43 PM)
I would say the best QB was Matt Ryan.
Jason (Tampa, FL)
Who is your favorite team to play against??? Clemson, Florida, Miami???
Everette Brown (12:44 PM)
If I had to pick I would say Florida. The in-state rivalry and the fans make the game great.
Erik (Manhattan, KS)
Everette, Do you think you guys have an edge not being ranked or picked to win the ACC and flying under the radar with so many players returning and so many talented freshman?
Everette Brown (12:45 PM)
We have a great opportunity to improve and move up the rankings. It's not where you start, it's where you finish!
Brad (Columbus, OH)
Do you think this is coach bowdens last year? How bad does he want that record over Jo pa?
Everette Brown (12:46 PM)
Coach Bowden is very competitive and he wants that record. I don't think he will stop coaching anytime soon.
Dan (Wisconsin)
Everette, will FSU win a BCS bowl game?
Everette Brown (12:47 PM)
We have the talent to win a National Championship and we will do everything we can to put ourselves in a great position at the end of the season.
Everette Brown (12:48 PM)
Thank you again for having me. Go 'Noles!
Buzzmaster (12:48 PM)
Thanks Everette!
Buzzmaster (12:48 PM)
Next up is my man Mel Kiper!
Tate (Las Vegas)
Thanks Everette! Best of luck to you and the 'noles!
Chris (Wisconsin)
FSU-WISCONSIN IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP! lol
Trevor (TX)
Mel Kiper=the hardest working man in the sports business!
Buzzmaster (12:50 PM)
You got that right. This guy never takes any time off.
Matt (South Bend, IN)
Never too early to talk about the draft Buzz!
Matt Z (Longview, WA)
Everybody is talking about Tim Tebow and how he is the best running QB in the game. Dont forget about a guy up in the Northwest by the name of Jake Locker.
Mark (T-Town, OH)
I will bet Mel a hundred bucks he cannot give me the scoop on Tyler Sheehan's pro potential. Big Arm, accurate and tall stature. He probably does not even know who he is.
Buzzmaster (12:52 PM)
You're kidding, right? Mel can tell you who D-II kids are, if they're good enough for the draft. I'm sure he knows all about Tyler.
Chris (Wisconsin)
Can't forget about Pat White either.
Mark (T-Town, OH)
Touche, buzzy
Brad (Carlisle)
Mark from T-Town should be thrown in the river for that sacreligious comment about Mel.
Marion (Alabama)
Looks like Mel just earned the easiest $100 of his life
Tyler (Pullman, wA)
Where is Mel?
Buzzmaster (12:54 PM)
5 minutes!
Johnstone (Bucktown)
Buzz, just wait and see what DeMarco Murray does to the Big 12 this year. Its going to get ugly...
SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)
Illini vs Mizzo, Davis vs Maclin, can't wait
Dro (O-Town, Fl)
Go UCF KNIGHTS.....beat USF
Trevor (TX)
Colt McCoy is going to come back to his Freshman form and light up the Big 12.
Ankeny, IA
Maclin will destroy him
9th Grader (Seattle)
I really don't think Tebow will leave early, especially if he doesn't win the heisman. he needs to develop more as passer before he can be top ten draft pick.
Buzzmaster (12:59 PM)
Heeeeeeeeerrrrrrrre's Mel!
Buzzmaster (1:06 PM)
Sorry I jumped the gun there. Mel was just getting home from his TV hits.....we're getting him now though. Hang on...
Billy (Tallahassee, Fl)
Mel, Speaking of the guy that just finished up, what do you think of Everette Brown as an NFL prospect? And what other Noles are on your radar?
Mel Kiper (1:09 PM)
He has got a chance to be if not one of the best defensive ends from the junior class, he's one of the guys right in the mix. It's an outstanding DE group, Greg Hardy, George Selvie, Maurice Evans, Ricky Sapp, Greg Middleton. Brown should be their best defensive player at FSU.
Frank (Colorado)
Is Curtis Painter (QB-Purdue) being overvalued or undervalued looking ahead to the 2009 Draft?
Mel Kiper (1:11 PM)
I don't think he's either one right now. It depends on what kind of year a senior QB has. You look at what a QB does this year, not last year. He needs Greg Orton to have a big year. Painter, the senior year is critical, but you're going to have to look at the junior year a little. He's got a great arm. I think he'll end up being the No. 1 or No. 2 senior QB. Him and Hunter Cantwell. But there are a host of junior QBs that could move ahead of all of them.
Matt (Tacoma, wa)
Mel...UVA or USC saturday?
Mel Kiper (1:12 PM)
USC's defense could be one of the best they've ever had. The problem USC has is their offense might stutter some. Mark Sanchez might be rusty. But they should have no problem. Virginia has the No. 1 player on my Top 25 Big Board. They have some individual standouts, but not enough to go toe-to-toe with USC for 4 quarters.
Eamonn (Chicago)
What are your thoughts on David Bruton? There CAN'T be THAT many better safety's in the country....right?
Mel Kiper (1:14 PM)
He's a very good player. You could make the argument that Bruton is one of their top 2 or 3 defensive players. He'll probably go into the draft as their best pro prospect. He has good size and range. He had 3 INTs last year and had been a back up until last seaon. This is only his second year as a starter. He's a great special teams player. That's going to help his value going to the next level.
Allen (Raleigh)
Mel, who do you see as the #1 rated RB for the 2009 draft?
Mel Kiper (1:16 PM)
The no. 1 rated RB will probably be a third-year sophomore. Knowshon Moreno or LeSean McCoy from Pittsburgh. Both third-year sophomores and both eligible for the draft and would go ahead of any senior back. Beanie Wells would be the next one and he's a junior. The top senior RB is James Davis from Clemson. His teammate CJ Spiller is the 4th-highest rated underclassmen.
Dylan (Cincinnati, OH)
Mel, I understand Tebow is a great college player but can you really see his game translating well to the NFL?
Mel Kiper (1:18 PM)
I think his game is going to have one more year to look at. I think he'll have a much better running back situation. He won't get beat up as much as last year. I said they had unhealthy balance. They had a balanced running game and passing game, but Tebow was doing both. The throws you need to make in the NFL, he can make. But he needs Louis Murphy, a senior speedster WR, to step up and have a big year. Also Riley Cooper, a junior. They don't have Cornelius Engram at TE. Aaron Hernandez, a sophomore, is the backup.
Chris (Charleston, SC)
Seriously Mel, if Jasper Brinkley doesnt get hurt, how high could he go in the '09 draft?
Mel Kiper (1:19 PM)
Coming off the injury, we have to wait and see. He's healthy now. His weight is down a bit. Two years ago, he was outstanding. We have to see how he comes back. It's going to be a wait and see. The other guy you have to really like is Erik Norwood, junior OLB. He looks like he has star power. This defense should be a lot better than it was last year. This defense has some outstanding players.
Ryan (Baltimore, MD)
Mel, what do you think of Pat Whites chances, if any, to get drafted in 2009? Not necessarily as a QB though...
Mel Kiper (1:20 PM)
No, it will not be as a QB. It will be as a WR. That's where he was recruited to be - Auburn, Alabama. He went to WVU to be a QB. But the QB-WR transition has been made in the NFL. He's going to be another that makes the tranisition.
Matt (PA)
What do you think Matt Grothe's draft status is comming into this year?
Mel Kiper (1:21 PM)
First of all, in terms of South Florida, last year, I think he was a potential Heisman candidate. He's only a junior and he's right around that 6-foot mark. The arm strength and height will play a factor. He's got a little Jeff Garcia in him.
Andy (Miami, Fl)
Mel, Who is the top defensive player on your board and would he be a help to my defensively challenged bengals??!!
Mel Kiper (1:23 PM)
Three of the top five are defensive players on my Big Board. Michael Johnson is 6-7, 260. He's potentially a feared sack artist. He's the main guy at Georgia Tech. He should get double digit sacks and could be the No. 1 pick. You also have James Lauranaitis and Rey Maualga.
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
There are three guys to keep an eye on: Brian Orakpo - he's probably one of the strongest DEs I've ever seen; Darius Butler - CB from UConn, gifted players; BJ Raji - DT from BC who missed all of last year and has a great presence in the interior.
Tate Lakota ND
Do you think that Notre Dame can bounce back this year?
Mel Kiper (1:26 PM)
The thing that's going to help them dramatically are young players. They have to mature quickly. How quickly the offensive line and defensive lines come together? They have a new defensive coach Jon Tenuta. There are a lot of smart defensive minds. They have some good offensive players. Jimmy Claussen. They really like their two RBs - Robert Hughes, Armando Allen. Defensively they were awful last year. This team has a chance to win 7-8 games this year. There are a lot of games that can go either way.
Alex, PA
Mel, where do you think fsu saftey myon rolle will go if he comes out this spring?
Mel Kiper (1:28 PM)
Good question. Highly publicized. He was expected to be a real difference maker in the secondary. I put him as the fourth best safety. Cam Chancellor is the best. Second, Taylor Mays from USC. Third, Emanuel Cook from South Carolina. I put Rolle fourth. That just includes juniors. He needs to have a big year. They also have Patrick Robinson. The strength of this team should be their secondary. But Rolle needs to take it to another level.
Mel Kiper (1:29 PM)
We've got college football starting tonight. Can't wait to kick it off at 7 ET. It doesn't end until Monday night. We'll be back next Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET at our regular.
Buzzmaster (1:29 PM)
Alright guys Curtis Painter of Purdue is here!
Curtis Painter (1:30 PM)
Let's get started!
Gary (Seattle)
Curtis how pumped are you for the season?
Curtis Painter (1:31 PM)
Any senior going into their last season is going to be very excited and that is the case for me. I think we have a group of guys that are very talneted and work well together and that it will prove to be a very exciting season!
Curtis Painter (1:31 PM)
Any senior going into their last season is going to be very excited and that is the case for me. I think we have a group of guys that are very talneted and work well together and that it will prove to be a very exciting season!
nathan (manassas)
What have you done to improve this offseason?
Curtis Painter (1:32 PM)
The biggest thing has been a lot of film work. You cannot be satisfied with where you are at ever. You can always learn. So I worked on a lot of defenses and I think that will help me a lot and make me a more consistent football player going into this year.
Rob OH
Curtis, how do you think Purdue will fair against Ohio State?
Curtis Painter (1:34 PM)
They will be a tough opponent. They have a lot of guys coming back from a very talented team. I think if we can go in with the same type of consistency and instensity we would like, I think it may give us a chance to win the game at the end. All you can ask for is to be in there at the end and to give it your best effort.
Brandon (College Station, Tx)
Hows it going Curtis? So the season is less than a week away are you ready for your last season opener? Do you have any goals that you set for yourself that you want to accomplish come season end?
Curtis Painter (1:36 PM)
I am certainly excited for the season, being as a senior. I do not have any specific goals, but I do want to continue to grow and take that next step. I think I have gotten better each year and I want to continue that in order to make our offense and our team better.
Tom (VA)
Any pregame rituals? And what do you think of Northern Colorado to start off the season?
Curtis Painter (1:37 PM)
I do not have any pregame rituals. Usually we have breakfast and then walkthroughs and once in the stadium I will go over some of my notes and listen to my music, but nothing that I have to do. As far as Northern Colorado we will play it like the first game of the season and go in there and give it our best and hopefully it will turn out the way we want it to.
David (Chapel Hill, NC)
What are your thoughts on playing at the next level?
Curtis Painter (1:39 PM)
It certainly is a dream that I have had since I was little and I would love to have the opportunity and that would be the result of a very good senior season. A lot of work still has to be done and I do not want to look ahead. I have to focus on this season before I start thinking about other things like that.
Paul VA
Curtis, what are the two toughest Big 10 defenses you'll face this season and why?
Curtis Painter (1:41 PM)
I think the one is Ohio State. They are going to be just as good if not better than last year with all the guys coming back. Other than that, when you go to Michigan they always have agreat group of guys. Penn State is always physical, as is Iowa. It is hard to single out one since the Big Ten is always so tough when it comes to defenses.
Mike
Do you feel the Big Ten gets hated on too much in the media?
Curtis Painter (1:43 PM)
No I do not think so. I guess each division has its own specialties and the Big Ten is known for being a physical conference and I think with all the speed in the other conferences I think we are at times overlooked. But I think it comes down to different styles.
David (Los Angeles)
Curtis it's you and Coach Tiller's last season. Is that extra motivation to have a special year?
Curtis Painter (1:44 PM)
Well I think it certainly is a factor that comes into play. We are treating it like coach Tiller is a senior as well. To go out in the same year as him will be very special. You do want to go out on top and because of it this senior class will give it their all and I think coach Tiller will as well.
Curtis Painter (1:46 PM)
Thank you for the questions...Boiler Up!
Buzzmaster (1:47 PM)
Thanks Curtis, best of luck!
Buzzmaster (1:47 PM)
Up next will be Rece Davis at 2 p.m. ET!
Buzzmaster (1:52 PM)
We've got a few minutes, so let's chat.
Mike (PA)
Buzz watch out rumor is the Pop Tarts were poisoned.
Buzzmaster (1:52 PM)
That's abuse.
"Z" Mistru, Mars
Lets get it started in here!
Rob (Atlanta)
any thoughts on how perriloux is going to do tonight against the jackets?
Buzzmaster (1:55 PM)
It will be interesting, won't it?
Huskers (Omaha, NE)
Bo Pelini is ready and so are the Huskers. This coach knows that the state demands perfection
Will J (Portland, OR)
Buzz, I here's my 5 pick (Wisconsin, Oklahoma St., Texas, Nebraska, Texas AandM). Do you think all will cover?
Buzzmaster (1:56 PM)
Ummmmm, sure why not?
Chris (Charleston, SC)
6h, 4 min.
Jon (Indiana)
Who is Rece Davis??? lol Just kidding!
Buzzmaster (1:56 PM)
Nice try.
Buzzmaster (1:57 PM)
OK. I'm going to yield the floor to Rece. He should be by at the top of the hour!
Rece Davis (1:57 PM)
hi everybody. Great to see the questions..we'll get started
Ryan (NJ)
Rece, do you feel Pat White at WVU will get more consideration for Heisman if/when he breaks the All Time NCAA Rushing record for Quarterbacks?
Rece Davis (1:58 PM)
Ryan,It will help, but it's not supposed to be a career achievement award. I think if WVU wins and White is viewed as the guy who held them together post-Rich Rod...it'll help his cause
mcm: (los angeles)
Rece - care to make a prediction on the Cal - Michigan State game??
Rece Davis (2:00 PM)
As my buddy Jay Bilas says..if we really knew who was going to win we wouldn't be doing this. We'd be really rich. I lean toward Cal although I think Michigan State is in good hands. Still a transition period
Todd (VA Beach)
Rece, What do you think of the QB situation in Blacksburg. Can the offensive line protect Glennon and will Taylor transfer if he doesn't play.
Rece Davis (2:01 PM)
Todd, My understanding based on communciation with some close to the situation is that Tyrod requested the redshirt and his family was involved in the decision. I was really surprised by it. I don't think he'll transfer
Rob (Atlanta)
Rece, looking at the SEC East schedules, Tennessee has to play four teams (UF, UGA, SCar, UK) coming off of bye weeks, and UF has three (Van, LSU, Ark). UGA and SCar are lucky and have none. Do you think this could influence the race at all?
Rece Davis (2:02 PM)
Reverse of recent yrs for Vols who often seemed to catch teams in good portions of the schedule. I think it could influence the race but it all depends on how teams are playing at the time. You don't want that bye week if you're hot. You need it if you're injured. So my answer is possibly.
Ed (syracuse, ny)
Any thought on Syracuse this season
Rece Davis (2:04 PM)
Well, I know their O-Line will be better. Mitch Browning is an excellent coordinator with a great resume` developing an OL. I'm not sure that will translate into more wins. But they won't be 118th in rushing again.
Tom (Sayreville)
Mr Davis, with a new coach at Michigan, and three redshirts for QB, is it possible for the Wolverines to still end up at a bowl game and keep their streak alive?
Rece Davis (2:05 PM)
I think too many people are selling Rodriguez's ability to adapt to his personnel short. Shaun King wasn't a great runner and he flourished under Rodriguez. King was effective running at times, but he was no Pat White. I think Michigan will definitely make a bowl...just not the caliber of bowl their fans are accustomed to.
John (Auburn Alabama)
What does Auburn have to do to beat Bama for the Sabanth straight time?
Rece Davis (2:07 PM)
Pun? or spelling-challenged?They just have to do what they've done. Create game changing turnovers and disrupting alabama's offense. They believe they should win that game. That one is a long way off...but Tubs boys will arrive full of confidence based on recent history I'm sure.
Jeff (Evans, GA)
Mel, who do you think will be a more successful NFL QB between Stafford and Tebow?
Rece Davis (2:09 PM)
Both will be successful. Stafford is more the prototype, but why in the world would anyone believe that Tim Tebow won't be successful. He's a unique cat.
Greyson (Hennessey, Ok)
Do you think Zach Robinson is really only the 7th best Qb in the big 12
Rece Davis (2:11 PM)
In that league, that's not really a slight. So let me do this off the top of my head. Understand, we're splitting hairs at the top. Daniel, Bradford, Harrell, Reesing, McCoy,...Those would be the top 5 in my mind. Robinson is good too...his stats were great last yr...he needs to win more. I like Freeman and McGee too. Lots of outstanding QB play in the Big 12. And I forgot Hawk Love's kid. Cody is a player too.
John (Gainesville, FL)
Last night I was watching the college football preview show, and I was upset to hear that there will not be any of Lou's pep talks this year. When I heard this I immediately took off all the sex and violence off my vcr, jumped from a 20 story building, just like the bumblebee (if you catch my drift). What gives, and what is going to replace it?
Rece Davis (2:12 PM)
Don't worry. We want to keep it fresh. We're having an Ask Dr. Lou segment in which he doles out advice to those seeking. Based on your location, you might be intrigued by one of the Doc's early patients.
Brett (New York)
No love for BC, I think their D will be top 10 in the country with the return of Toal and Raji. I know life post-Ryan will be hard, but shouldn't the defense alone have them at least crack the pre-season top 25 after finishing top 10/11 last year?
Rece Davis (2:14 PM)
Jags told us last night the front 7 will be even better than it was last yr...and what were they 2nd against the run? They're being picked way too low in the ACC.
Keith (Macon, GA)
Rece, I wouldn't care if Georgia lost all of their other games but beat Florida. For me that's a success. Now that's a rivalry, what are thoughts on some more underrated rivalries?
Rece Davis (2:16 PM)
Keith, I'm not sure you really mean that. that would get Richt fired. The world was introduced to Mizzou-Kansas in football last yr. That's one. As far as disdain, Clemson/South Carolina doesn't get enough attention. The apple cup and the civil war are great ones that don't always jump to the top of the list too.Navy and ND is a rivlary again.
Shane (WV)
Is Stewart the right coach for WVU?
Rece Davis (2:17 PM)
time will tell. My knee jerk reaction was that it wasn't the right hire. However, that's patently unfair to Stewart. Let's see how they play over the next 2-3 yrs. That's when that decision can be reasonably made.
Matt (DC)
How many wins do you foresee for Nebraska and new coach Bo Pelini? They have a tough stretch of Va Tech, Missouri and Texas Tech, but if they can take 2 out of 3 of those I see big things.
Rece Davis (2:19 PM)
I'm going to say they only have to get 1 of those 3...and they can still win 7 or 8. Might be able to lose all of them and still win that many. Can't see them winning @ OU or @ TT...but getting Mizzou and KU in Lincoln will give them a shot. Va Tech too.
Tyler (Houston)
Is Mike Sherman the right man to lead the Aggies?
Rece Davis (2:20 PM)
I didn't have a negative initial reaction to Sherman's hire. But the answer is the same as Bill Stewart. Let's see in 2-3 yrs.
Tripp Memphis, Tn
Why no love (College Gameday Live exposure) for D.J. Moore?!? Don't say because he plays for Vanderbilt, that's everyone's excuse, let's get some of the overexposure off of Moreno and Tebow, onto some of their surprisingly talented opponents. What's not to love about D.J. Moore?
Rece Davis (2:22 PM)
Why would I say that? I was the one ridiculed for saying Vandy would make a bowl a couple of yrs ago. See what happens when you predict. Moore is a dynamic player. For those unfamiliar, his role is a lot like Macho Harris's role will be for VT. Defense, Offense, return guy with a knack for finding a crease
Darryl (Oakland, CA):
Rece,Is there a more unpredictable team than Cal? With their talent they could compete for the national championship, but with their inexperience they could also go 6-6. What do you think of the golden bears?
Rece Davis (2:23 PM)
Hard to imagine. What happened to them last year was embarrassing. I think you'll see a much different Cal team. My guess would be that last year's Cal team wasn't exactly the poster team for a Big TEAM little me T shirt
John from Sandersville, MS.
I realize that no-one around the country gives Mississippi Collegiate Athletics any Credit! In All Reality, how well of a season do you foresee the Miss. State Bulldogs and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Having? I'm Picking 9-3 for the dogs and 10-2 for the Golden Eagles...what say ye?
Rece Davis (2:26 PM)
Not buying that good, John. State has to prove to me that they can be more explosive offensively. Sly Croom told us last night that's the goal...he believes they have guys who can do it. With just 10 returning starters and young QBs...not on that USM bandwagon although the schedule's not bad other than the trip to Auburn. I like Ole Miss as a sleeper (just to make a bowl game) in the SEC West. Why do I think you won't like that one.
James (Nashville)
What is the best part of CFB Live? Can I have your job?
Rece Davis (2:27 PM)
I do have a great job. But I still need it. Kids have school. We need to eat. But there's room for you too. Keep at it.Best part is working with Mark and Lou. Great friends, great guys...and passionate about the game.
Harry (Indianapolis)
Rece, it's "delusion week" - the last few days before the actual season, where everyone still believes their team will go undefeated. That being said, which SEC East team does Alabama play in the championship game?
Rece Davis (2:28 PM)
There will not be an undefeated team in the SEC championship game. In fact, whoever arrives from the West will have 2 conference losses and 3 wouldn't stun me. Semi well-played though.
Jim, ATL
Everybody is curious to see how Paul Johnson's offense does this year and beyond, but what about Georgia Tech's defense? I think they have a chance to surprise a lot of people, especially by the end of the season against UGA. Thougts?
Rece Davis (2:30 PM)
That's an excellent point. Everybody is waiting and predicting that Michael Johnson bust out yr. They've got experience up front. This much is sure, Johnson won't have to outscore teams 46-44 or 72-63 to win every week. And before the season is over, Tech's offense will be a handful...because Johnson's offenses always are. Looking forward to seeing Nesbitt. I hope he's healthy.
Zach (winston-salem, nc)
Wake Forest is finally getting some respect in the polls. Do you think they have a chance at knocking off Clemson to win the ACC?
Rece Davis (2:32 PM)
I think Clemson is a better team and should win the ACC. But with the way Wake has played the last couple of yrs...why doubt. 20wins the last 2 yrs? That's better than the best 3 yr runs in Wake history.
Chris, Austin Texas
Texas Tech returns last years consensus All-American and Bilitnekoff Award winner, Michael Crabtree, as well as a host of other offensive weapons. What do you see as the biggest obstacle for the Red Raiders to overcome on their way to a Big XII South Title?
Rece Davis (2:33 PM)
Boomer.Sooner.
Storm (Georgia)
can Oregon upset USC this season?
Rece Davis (2:34 PM)
If Stanford can, Oregon can. Oregon is very good on defense. Good pass rush with Nick Reed. Chung and Byrd...strong veteran secondary.
Tressel (Buckeye Nation)
Rece I have been thinking I want something new so Im going to coach a different college team next year. How many schools will I hear from ?
Rece Davis (2:35 PM)
All that have an opening. All but about 15 that don't. And that doesn't mean you aren't better than a lot of those guys Senator...it would just be reluctance to change
Matt, New Jersey
how good is Will Hill?
Rece Davis (2:37 PM)
Very talented...but I think they hoped he'd grow up a little quicker.
Jeffy (Bacon, GA)
what will be georgia's toughest game this season?
Rece Davis (2:37 PM)
Gators. Got to go guys...I actually ran over time. Thanks for the questions.
Bottom 10 Guy (2:39 PM)
Hey folks. Bottom 10 guy here to take a few questions. Fire away.
Dan (Long Branch, NJ)
Hey Bottom 10 Guy. Maryland is returning arguably the deepest offensive line and wide receiving cores in ACC, highlighted by probable first round pick Darius Heyward-Bey. Can you see the Terps as a dark horse in the Atlantic Division?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:41 PM)
It's the ACC. Anyone can win it. Do you think Clemson won't take a loss somewhere along the way?
brian (bloomington)
in 3 years, who are your top 3 teams and bottom 3 teams? Any major moves or more of the same?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:43 PM)
Good question.Top teamsIn three years the top three teams will be:USC, Ohio State and MichiganBottom threeFIU, Idaho and Notre Dame (kidding)
David (Tampa, FL)
Bottom 10, seeing as how UGA is ranked number 1, but no one seems to pick them to even win the SEC east, presumably because of their schedule, do you think UF, or any other team in the country, could navigate UGA's schedule?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:44 PM)
Getting through the SEC is always tough. The Dawgs can't worry about that. Can they? Sure. Will they? Doubt it.
Shane (WV)
Is Marshall going to appear on the bottom 10 most of this year too?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:46 PM)
Nah, I think the Herd will be better.
Dan, Colorado
Is Travis Beckum the best tight end in all of college football?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:46 PM)
Ivan Maisel thinks so. That's good enough for me.
Tate (Las Vegas)
If you had to rank your bottom 3 BCS conferance's, who would it be?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:47 PM)
1. ACC2. Big East3. Big Ten
Nate (Madison)
Which B10 team might be a frequent vistor of the Bottom 10. Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, or IU?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:48 PM)
Minnesota's still the Big Ten team for the Bottom 10. But keep an eye on Iowa. Lost of trouble there recently.
Mark (Portland, OR)
Will Notre Dame return to the Bottom 10 again this season?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:49 PM)
Seriously, no. The Irish will have a much better season.
Rod (Raleigh, NC)
Do you see any perennial bottom 10ers actually making a bowl this year? Dukies? Baylor?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:50 PM)
I don't know if the Owls will reach a bowl, but I expect Temple to be much improved.
Jason (Norman, OK)
Do you ever catch any criticism from schools you put in the Bottom 10? And how hard is it to narrow it down to 10?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:52 PM)
Not really. It's not a serious list. I think most people understand that. Narrowing the list to 10 is pretty tough most weeks. Picking the highly coveted No. 5 team is usually pretty easy.
Greg (Crystal Lake, IL)
Baylor seemed to have a renewed vigor about them last year, and had a decent offense.... Can you see them winning any games they shouldn't this year?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:53 PM)
We'll find out about Baylor tonight. Opening against Wake is tough. Can they pull an upset along the way? Sure. They shocked the Aggies a few years back.
Grayson (Tampa)
Lets switch your role for once. What are the Bottom 10 Guy's top traditions in football?
Bottom 10 Guy (2:56 PM)
Wow. Too many to choose from, which is what makes college football great. But these would make my list: (in no particular order) dotting the i at Ohio State, Howard's Rock, the hook 'em Horns sign, Touchdown Jesus, Aggie fans sawing varsity's hons off, the Grove at Ole Miss ...
Ed (syracuse, ny)
Will Syracuse ever get out of the bottom 10
Bottom 10 Guy (2:57 PM)
Hmm. It might take a coaching change -- and that might happen soon.
Justin (Jackson, MS)
Who is the worst team in the SEC this year? Not Vandy again please!!
Bottom 10 Guy (2:59 PM)
Vandy again, sorry. But that's like being 12th in the Miss America contest.
Bowden (Clemson, SC)
Can you set my mind at ease? If I choke again this year are you going to put me in your Bottem 10? I swear my ego could not take it.
Bottom 10 Guy (3:00 PM)
Lose to the wrong team and it could happen.
Holly(Georgia)
Bottom line worst team in Division 1??
Bottom 10 Guy (3:01 PM)
Gotta go with Idaho.
Bottom 10 Guy (3:02 PM)
Thanks for the questions. Enjoy the season.
