James Quintong (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon everyone. Looks like a ton of draft questions with lots of people drafting over the long weekend, so I'll get to as many of them as I can. Don't worry baseball fans, I'll get to your questions as well.
Tom, Boston
Hi James, I'm in a ten team, traditional scoring league where we play 1QB,2RB, and 3WR's. I have the tenth pick. I usually go two RB's but I'm thinking RB, WR here. Your thoughts?
James Quintong (3:03 PM)
With three WRs in play, I probably would go RB/WR. You'll get one of the second-tier backs and likely a top-tier receiver, and I'd be happy with that. Surprisingly, I think you'll find a serviceable No. 2 RB coming back around in round 3 after that.
Mike(NJ)
Hey James- I have the 12th pick in a 12 team draft (no ppr). In the mocks that I've done, I keep seeing Grant, LJ, MJD, Owens and Wayne go in the spot. How would you rank them?
James Quintong (3:04 PM)
I'd go Owens, Wayne, Grant, LJ, MJD.
Rob Parsonsfield ME.
got pick 10 and 11 picks in tomorrows draft is it wrong to go with moss and t.o. or maybe even wayne and pick up 2 r.b.s in rounds 3 and 4
James Quintong (3:06 PM)
To continue with the questions on the back half of the draft, going Moss/TO and 10 and 11 is definitely workable, although I do like to have one top RB to anchor things. Although in a 10-team league, you might able to sneak through with guys Edgerrin James, Thomas Jones and the like in rounds 3 and 4.
P(Boston)
With Marshall's suspension being knocked down to 1 game is he now a top 10 fantasy WR?
James Quintong (3:08 PM)
He definitely moves way back up the list, although I think I'd still have him just slightly outside the top 10, although guys like Steve Smith and Chad Johnson are iffy enough that I could consider Marshall over those guys at this point. The move also makes me a feel a lot better about Jay Cutler.
David Fairborn, OH
I had the 2nd pick in the draft last night and I picked Westbrook over AP. I got a lot of flack for it, but I'm pretty confident in the selection. I made a good decision, right?
James Quintong (3:09 PM)
I think you're fine. We've been split around here at ESPN over who should be #2. Officially, we've got Peterson there, but Matthew Berry isn't buying it, and I'm hesitant about Peterson at 2 if it's a PPR league. I like Westbrook a lot, and I think he's fine there.
Ken Kaniff (Connecticut)
Who is the 2nd pick in the draft this year? Would Brady be a bad pick at 2?
James Quintong (3:11 PM)
To follow up on the #2 pick, there's obviously a lot of sentiment about Peterson, and Westbrook is in the mix. Brady is in the discussion if you think he'll come close to last year's magical numbers. I wouldn't take him there because there's going to be a falloff from last year, but right now he's way above everyone as the top QB. So personally, I wouldn't take him at 2, but I wouldn't give you a lot of flack for it either.
Ryu, Calif
Fantasy FB draft theory...Consenus seems to say pick a stud RB 1st. But if you pick last in a serpentine draft nad will 2 consectutive picks, would you take 2 top WR's (ie Moss, TO, Edeards, Wayne) then a RB with the 3rd pick? Thanks.
James Quintong (3:13 PM)
I've already addressed this before, but if you can nab two really top-notch WRs at the turn in the first/second round, then yeah, you can do it. The pool of RBs available with that 3rd pick is still somewhat useful.
Will (The OC)
I want Megatron! Is he worth trading either Selvin Young or Maroney?
James Quintong (3:14 PM)
Depends on your other needs at RB, really, although I think it'd be a steal if you got Calvin Johnson for Selvin Young.
Josh ( columbus, OH)
Hey James! How do you feel about the Denver backfield? Would you be content with Selvin Young as your #3 RB and likely starter at flex?
James Quintong (3:16 PM)
To continue on the Selvin Young parade, I think he's OK as the No. 3/flex guy for now, but not much more than that. The Denver running game situation the past few years makes me hesitant to rely on any of them on a weekly basis.
Tom (OB)
last chat before draft on monday. 12 team keeper who do you like from available rbs to go with LT. Lewis, Graham, Kevin Smith, Forte, Stewart, Turner thanks
James Quintong (3:18 PM)
In terms of playing time, I'd probably rank them Lewis, Graham, Turner, Forte, Smith, Stewart. But in terms of potential for now and the future, probably Stewart, Smith, Forte, Turner, Graham, Lewis.
Perry (Boston)
James, thanks for all your help this season. I have Kevin Boss as my starting TE in a 10 team, keeper league. Should I trade Marques Colston for Larry Fitzgerald and Chris Cooley (and then drop Boss)?
James Quintong (3:20 PM)
While I like Boss, I'm not sure how you ended up with him as the starting TE in your league. Although after the top few TEs, it's a wash in terms of production there. Still, I might do the deal since I might take Fitz over Colston anyways, plus get the bonus in Cooley.
Shane (Edison, NJ)
Hey James, What do you think of Matt Forte and Ronnie Brown in a keeper (I took them over Stewart, Mendenhall). Also do u like a tandem of Hasselbeck/Bulger in a 1QB, 12 team league this year? Thanks man!
James Quintong (3:23 PM)
Hey, someone from my hometown! Anyways, I'm not necessarily thrilled with either back, but Forte is definitely worth watching in keeper leagues. Then again, so is Stewart. I think Brown may get better as the season goes on too. As for the QB, that's not a bad 1-2 punch if you're interested in playing the matchups game each week. Both QBs have major question marks right now, but in the right week, you could strike fantasy gold.
Leah (Winnipeg, Canada)
Do you think Torry Holt will be consistent again this year? I took him in the 4th round. Thanks!
James Quintong (3:24 PM)
That's not a bad place to get Holt. He seems to get his numbers every year. At this point in his career, he's a safe but not overly exciting fantasy pick.
J-Man (Twin Cities)
Two Questions...Would you trade McGahee/Housh to get Gore/Megatron? And, is Kitna worht owning more than Campbell?
James Quintong (3:28 PM)
I think I might make that deal. There are enough injury issues with McGahee and Housh to knock down their value over Gore/Calvin Johnson. Kitna can throw for a ton of yards, but he can also do nothing and throw picks. Campbell is on the rise, but it'll be a slow process for him to become a major fantasy impact player.
David Fairborn, OH
Who has a better chance at being a starter by the end of the season? The Titans' Chris Johnson or Bmore's Ray Rice?
James Quintong (3:29 PM)
I think Johnson does given that's he going to be splitting carries with LenDale White pretty soon. I like Rice better, but in terms of regular touches, then it's Johnson.
Mike (WI)
JAMES-I need you to look into your crystal ball. Who is the best late wr pick? Muhammed, Mark Clayton, Josh Morgan, Meachum, Steve Smith (NYG), Obamanu, Courtney Taylor, James Jones, Chris Henry.
James Quintong (3:31 PM)
If you have the bench space, then Henry. If you need someone right away, them maybe Obomanu or James Jones.
Matt Foley "Motivational Speaker"
Hey the JAMES! GREAT STUFF AS ALWAYS! I play in a league where TE's are same as WR's (No designated TE). My question is what TE's are worthy of taking? And at what point are they more valuable than a WR?
James Quintong (3:33 PM)
If that's the case with no designated TEs, the pool of draftable TEs does shrink, or at the very least, even guys like Witten, Gonzalez, Winslow and Clark probably slip a couple of rounds. Some of the marginal top-10/15 tight ends probably don't get drafted in that case (Scheffler, Vernon Davis, etc.). I'd say the TEs who project to double-digit TDs or 800-900 yards are still valuable because the production is relatively consistent.
Please Answer for Leagues Sake
Very Important Trade Veto Question... Our league is going crazy because of this trade... Addai and Marvin for Santonio, Reggie Bush, Hester and Deuce... is this a vetoable trade just because you think one team is getting the better end of the deal?
James Quintong (3:35 PM)
I try not to veto too many deals on principle. And this one doesn't sound like it should be vetoed, despite the number of players being thrown around.
Harry (Cabo Wabo)
Need to fill my final RB spot....Kenny Watson or Kevin Jones?
James Quintong (3:36 PM)
I'd go with Watson since he could be getting a bunch of touches immediately with the Rudi Johnson situation up in the air.
brian (brooklyn, ny)
Hi James- I need your help deciding on my 1st round pick. Trying to decide in a 1/2 PPR league between Portis, Gore and Lynch. Pros and cons of all 3 but I'd appreciate your opinion. Thanks. J-E-T-S! JETS JETS JETS!
James Quintong (3:38 PM)
I'd rank them in the order you have: Portis, Gore, Lynch. I'd be happy with any of the three but not thrilled unless you could get one of the other two guys on the way back.
Sammy (Allentown, PA)
Seriously, why has there been no news or updates regarding the highly touted TE, Tony Scheffler? Apparently he is no longer starting. This is huge news, especially for those who haven't drafted yet. Please report. Thank you
James Quintong (3:40 PM)
He may not be starting, but it still looks like he'll come in on enough passing downs to still be useful. Even with Brandon Marshall only missing one game, I'm not thrilled with the rest of Denver's receivers that Scheffler will still be very involved in the passing game.
David Fairborn, OH
Why are so many people down on Matt Hasselbeck this year? He had a career year last year.
James Quintong (3:42 PM)
Well, when you say "career year," it also says that he's peaked and that he may not do it again. Hasselbeck's back has been an issue this summer, plus I am not a big fan of his receivers.
Mark, Akron
Hi James, We Just had our Draft.... In our league, we can add two free agents after the draft?Pick Two Free Agents from David Patten, Robert Meachem, Andre Hall, Brandon Stokley, Antwaan Randle El, Maurice Morris And/Or should I use one my selections to hand-cuff Marshawn Lynch with Fred Jackson?Thank You
James Quintong (3:43 PM)
I'd add Randle El and maybe Hall or Morris. You don't need to add the handcuff in this situation just yet, especially with someone like Fred Jackson.
Keith (Bethel CT)
Hi... I'm drafting tommorow in a deep 16 team league. I'm concerned with what I should do if I get a late pick, say 14-16. I'd guess the RBs available would be question marks... would you take a top tier WR at that point? The snake drafts kill me when it's that deep.
James Quintong (3:45 PM)
It would depend what WRs are taken by then. I wouldn't be thrilled with a Colston or Fitzgerald as my first overall pick for whatever reason. The available RBs should be decent enough at the end of the first round and still get a solid WR coming back around.
Chuck (NJ)
Had my first draft this week. Very happy overall. Question revolves around wr depth. Starters are set (start 3) with B. Edwards, B. Marshall and S. Smith but obviously need backups early. Have De. Jackson, M. Muhammad and A. Bryant. Your thoughts on those 3, specifically early. Thank you.
James Quintong (3:47 PM)
Jackson has the upside and potentially a starting spot to begin the season. He's worth a gamble like in a situation you've got. Muhammad isn't anything great, but again, he's OK as a plug-in guy. He's at least a better bet than Bryant at this point.
James Quintong (3:49 PM)
OK, answering a few baseball questions I've got stored up. I'll try to sneak in a couple of more football questions before it's all over.
Tom (Birmingham)
Rest of the season: Chris Young or Lastings Milledge?
James Quintong (3:50 PM)
I think I'd give the slight edge to Milledge.
Gurthman
I have a baseball question. Would you start Garza for the rest of the year? Their still are spot starts i could use, but after his last start i'm thinking of keeping him for the long haul.
James Quintong (3:51 PM)
Garza is a bit maddening to own, but I think he's still worth having around down the stretch. Let's see how he'll react in a pennant race.
Mike (DC)
10 minutes left!!! Time for baseball. Vazquez at Bos, Guthrie at TB? I need wins and am slightly over IP limit. Thanks!
James Quintong (3:51 PM)
Might give the edge to Guthrie here.
Shorty
Furcal returning soon?
James Quintong (3:52 PM)
Probably after rosters expand. If he's healthy enough to go, the Dodgers will definitely want his bat in the lineup.
Jacob (Fairfax VA)
I'm in the pack in wins and just over the IP pace. Worth it to chase wins with some middle RP this time of year or is that never a good option?
James Quintong (3:54 PM)
I hate chasing wins because it really is fickle -- I'm learning that the hard way in a long-running keeper league I'm in. However, it might not be a bad idea to get some top-flight middle relievers to keep the innings down but still keep the ratios in good shape. If you luck into wins, that's a bonus.
Steven (Toronto)
Is Snider worth a look in AL only leagues?
James Quintong (3:55 PM)
In AL-only leagues, definitely, since the Blue Jays will give him plenty of playing time. He has produced across the minors this year, so he's at least worth the flyer.
ZORRO
How many start's would you say a pitcher has left in the season? Getting close to the limit and dont know how to pace it. For instance i have Santana going tonight. After tonight how many starts does he have left?
James Quintong (3:56 PM)
Let's see, most teams are the 130-range in games played, so there are about 25-30 games left. Depending on the rotation, probably another 5-6 starts.
Ray, Calif
I have been waiting to activate Wainwright...I need to drop a SP to make room. Nolasco, Saunders or Burnett? Burnett has been a good soldier for me all season, but he's been hit around lately....Thoughts?
James Quintong (3:57 PM)
Yeah, I think Burnett might be the guy to go here. Nolasco has been solid in the second half and Saunders just keeps plugging along.
Ryan(Chatt)
Hey James, need some insight. What has happened to Derek Lee's power? Will he ever hit 30 homeruns again? What about hit over .300 avg? If not, he can't be a top 10 1st basemen can he? Drop him for Delgado if I need power? I'm just so frustrated with his production the last few months and need help. Thanks!!!
James Quintong (3:59 PM)
His production in the second half has been a bit baffling, especially since he was on a 30-homer pace in the first half, which is why I thought he'd be (and not a 46-homer guy). I'd be hesitant to drop him, though, even for the hot-hitting Delgado, because I can see Lee going on a late-season surge as the Cubs make a playoff run.
John (LA)
Out of the 3 OFs which one is worth keeping for the playoff run? Lewis SF, Pence Hou, Bruce Cin? Thanks in advance
James Quintong (4:00 PM)
It depends on what you need (steals, homers, etc.), but I'll go with Bruce.
R.J. (Seattle)
James - any thoughts on Huff? He HAS been hitting the schizer out of the ball. Can keep 5 next year... who do I keep...Holliday, hawpe, tulo, bphillips, Tex, longoria, huff. Thanks!
James Quintong (4:02 PM)
Huff has either been overrated or underrated in his career -- so I guess that could make him "rated." As for the keepers, Longoria, Holliday, Phillips and Tex are gimmes. It's a tossup between Tulo and Huff after that.
James Quintong (4:02 PM)
Back to some football to finish off.
Ryan: (SLC, UT)
Enough baseball! This is FFB time. S.Jackson or J.Addai in a PPR league?
James Quintong (4:02 PM)
I'll go with Addai.
Jon (Rhode Island)
BUZZER BEATER: Should I use my number 1 waiver priority on Ted Ginn Jr. or Rudi Johnson? It's a 10 team, keeper league.
James Quintong (4:03 PM)
Ginn, since Johnson's status is still up in the air.
James Quintong (4:03 PM)
OK, that's all the time I've got. Enjoy the first weekend of college football, best of luck in your drafts and have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend.
