Bruce Feldman (4:02 PM)
Hi.. Just grabbed a protein bar and I'm ready for your questions.
Craig (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Why is Tebow listed as a favorite by espn's experts after his very mediocre performance?
Bruce Feldman (4:02 PM)
You're kidding, right?
Rick (Tampa,FL)
Good afternoon Bruce, I am a huge Gator fan but a little concerned about the Miami game coming up, I think that Miami is much better than last year. In your opinion sir cam Miami come into the swamp and pull out a victory and if so what are the keys to doing so, thanks.
Bruce Feldman (4:04 PM)
Miami is a long shot to come in there with a starting QB who has never played a college game. The Canes are really really young and inexperienced at a lot of key positions. Their best hope is for their O-line to have a great night (UM has very good RBs) and to force some turnovers.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Bruce, Can Alabama win the sec west?
Bruce Feldman (4:05 PM)
It's possible. I thought Auburn would. The Tide needs to get Andre Smith healthy and play with the some emotion and focus they had Sat. night in the Dome.
Mike-Spartanburg, S.C.
How significant is the injury to Jeff Owens and what does do to the Dawgs Tilile hopes?
Bruce Feldman (4:05 PM)
It's big. He's a very good player and a leader on that D. The one plus is that is a position where they have some talented depth.
Gainesville, GA
Bruce, Why do you hate Georgia so much? You predict the #1 pre-season team across the board to play in the Cotton Bowl? How and Why? They may have a tough schedule, but you can't hold that against them.
Bruce Feldman (4:07 PM)
I don't hate Georgia at all. In fact having spent a little time with Mark Richt's family I think they're great people. It's just I see them losing at least two and probably three games. They lost their best O-linemen and I think the expectatons will be too much for them. I think UF beats them in Jacksonville also.
Pete (LA)
Thoughts on Tennessee losing their opener on the road to a Pac 10 team again?
Bruce Feldman (4:09 PM)
Stunned. I think UCLA was two years away, but the Bruins staff did an amazing job and the players really battled. UCLA couldn't run the ball at all but Tenn couldn't get Craft out of sync in the second half and it snowballed. I was down on the field in the fourth quarter and UT looked like they knew something bad was happening to them.
Marshall (Terre Haute, IN)
If Harrell(Texas Tech) throws for 40+ TDs and close to 6,000 yards, does he Harrell finish the Heisman discussion?
Bruce Feldman (4:09 PM)
And if Tech wins the Big 12 South, he's at least a finalist.
Chris, CA
What was the biggest surprise of the weekend for you?
Bruce Feldman (4:10 PM)
UCLA beating Tenn over Alabama mauling Clemson and the Tigers playing with zero emotion.
Taylor (Washington, DC)
Certainly Willie Tuitama has a shot to lead the Pac-10 in yards this year, any chance for him to lead the NCAA?
Bruce Feldman (4:11 PM)
A small chance. I think it'll be Harrell. They play in a league where there will be tons of shootouts.
Trey (San Diego, CA)
Bruce - Not sure if you caught any of the Auburn game but it was awful. D and special teams were good as usual, but the offense only sustained one good drive and that consisted of running the same inside handoff to the wide side of the field 10 straight times (literally) and letting the backs just find a hole. Will Franklin turn it around or should I quit exercising that 7th finger for Bama?
Bruce Feldman (4:12 PM)
I actually caught a lot of the first half on Gameplan. You're right about how they made up for the offense. I think they need to work off a lot of rust. I think USM could give them a lot of trouble.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Feldman: How badly were the reputations of the Big East and ACC hurt this weekend? For at least a week we didn't have to hear about how weak the Big Ten Conference is.
Bruce Feldman (4:13 PM)
It was pretty bad, and it'll be worst for the Big East if WVU loses at ECU, but I don't see that happening.
Ryan (Ferndale, MI)
Central Michigan is no pushoever. Is there any chance the Chips can upset Georgia?
Bruce Feldman (4:14 PM)
Doubt it. CMU really struggled last year whenever they stepped up in weight class. The D has to make huge strides.
Matt (San Francisco)
You are really surprised by UCLA? Did you watch the game? Sorry, but I think UCLA won because TENN is just a bad team. Four ints by Craft and UCLA won. Sorry, that was a bad and overrated TENN team.
Bruce Feldman (4:15 PM)
Some of that was UCLA's defense giving Tennessee's offense problems and the Bruins have really good special teams, which I think people tend to underestimate. I still doubt UCLA has enough firepower to win seven games, but they'll be interesting to watch.
Nick (Eugene)
Do you think Oregon can compete with USC for the top pac 10 spot this year?
Bruce Feldman (4:16 PM)
Not sure. I thought they were really impressive Sat night. The Ducks have a ton of speed and I love their secondary. The whole team tackles well too.
Bruce Feldman (4:17 PM)
Probably Wisconsin because it's a road game for OSU and the Badgers D is better than Illinois. Or at least I think it will be.
Tim (Bodie, CA)
Upset Special... Nevada over Texas Tech 45-39
Bruce Feldman (4:17 PM)
Ok, you're on the record now.
Dennis (Texas)
what did you think of colt mccoy's performance on saturday(maybe heisman consideration
Bruce Feldman (4:18 PM)
Good start, but lets not go overboard on any one great effort at the start of the season. Was more impressed by the Texas D than the O actually considering the strength of FAU's team.
Dave (SLC, UT)
Is Louie Sakoda one of college football's most powerful weapons?
Bruce Feldman (4:19 PM)
Yep. He and Wake's Sam Swank.
Brandon (Memphis)
What about the Rebels? That McCluster dude is pretty good.
Bruce Feldman (4:21 PM)
He is an awesome little guy. The old staff loved Dexter. Great kid. Worked hard in school. Only thing you have to worry about is his durability. You cringed everytime he got hit. It's not that he's not tough. He'll battle but he's just not big. Quick Dexter story: missed the whole first month of 2007 and then in his first play in the UGA game, he throws a huge block on a running play.
michael (broken arrow, ok)
if Tulsa goes throughout the season perfect, which bowl will they go to?
Bruce Feldman (4:22 PM)
Not sure.. Talked to a writer buddy last night after the game and got into the discussion what if a bunch of these BCS busters went undefeated (Fresno would have to beat Wiscky) and then there might be ECU and the winner of Utah-BYU... anyhow we're getting ahead of ourselves.
Marie (Daly City, CA)
Why is Coach Tedford playing Nate Longshore especially with poor performance he had on Saturday against Michigan State?
Bruce Feldman (4:23 PM)
Loyalty?
Mark Sanchez
Is my Heisman hype legit???
Bruce Feldman (4:23 PM)
Check back after next Saturday night.
John (Dallas)
You said earlier you thought UCLA was two years away, do you still feel that way?
Bruce Feldman (4:24 PM)
Yes.. they just don't have much depth. I think their star QB was in the building last night, but he was on an unofficial visit there, Richard Brehaut. And he needs some big O-linemen to block for him.
John (Tulsa, OK)
Does Tennessee's loss to a very average UCLA team take some of the luster off the "invincible" SEC?
Bruce Feldman (4:25 PM)
I think so.
Alan (Indianapolis)
Though he didn't play the past weekend, where do you expect to see Curtis Painter in the Heisman rankings at the end of the year?
Bruce Feldman (4:26 PM)
I don't see him in the top 10. He'll put up nice stats, but I don't see it.
Robb (Colorado)
Bruce, ND fan here and I just don't see 9 wins. Should be 4 gimmes (SDST, Stan, WASH, SYR). That leaves 8 losses or toss-ups. I don't see them winning 5 of them.
Bruce Feldman (4:27 PM)
After USC, there's not a top 25 team in the bunch. I see at least 8 wins. But you can say I told you so two months from now if I'm wrong.
Scott S (LA)
After the weekend's games do you feel like usc will beat Ohio?
Bruce Feldman (4:27 PM)
Yes, I do.
dan(boston,ma)
hey, bruce.Jeff Smith returned on offense for BC Saturday.Do you think his speed will help our spread offense? Also prediction versus Georgia Tech?
Bruce Feldman (4:28 PM)
It will. BC needs more speed on offense and for Crane to get settled in. I do think their O-line has the makings of being very good down the road.
JERRY (ORLANDO)
DO YOU THINK THE GATORS CAN WIN THE NC?
Bruce Feldman (4:29 PM)
Yeah, but the D has to improve a lot. I doubt we'll really find out about them for another month though. UM is too green at QB to prove much.
Brian (Brooklyn)
Have any upset specials for this week?
Bruce Feldman (4:30 PM)
Not yet, but I'm going through games tonight.
Pat (Boston)
Better chance of winning, ECU against WV or Fresno against Wisconsin?
Bruce Feldman (4:30 PM)
like this question..um, I'll say Fresno.
zach (dallas, tx)
Care to retract your Mizzou prediction? That defense is not winning anything of any significance. Even with their shameful schedule.
Bruce Feldman (4:31 PM)
Nope, and "Shameful" just played a Rose Bowl team. That's tougher than a lot of other teams have in their non conference skeds.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
In your opinion does Penn State get a BCS bid or will it be more of an Alamo Bowl type of season?
Bruce Feldman (4:32 PM)
Nope..no BCS for them this year. Going to Wisconsin and OSU will be too much for them.
Robert, (Robertsdale, Al.)
Listen here Feldman, Why are you so against the SEC? Just because they have a deep conference!
Bruce Feldman (4:33 PM)
Huh????? Did you read what I wrote on this site yesterday about the SEC?
Josh Portis (College Park, MD)
Why won't Fridge give me a chance over those bums Steffy and Turner?
Bruce Feldman (4:34 PM)
Do you make too many mistakes? Are you less consistent? Just a hunch.
Sheep Boy (Corvallis, Or)
What do you think the Oregon State Rodents chances are of giving Penn St a game this weekend?
Bruce Feldman (4:34 PM)
20% chance.. The Beavs are exciting on offense, but I dont think their young D is going to be stout enough.
German (San Juan, PR)
Bruce, I noticed a big disparity in where the polls rank Bama: ESPN and AP -- #11 and 13, respectively; coaches -- #17. Did the coaches not watch the game on Sat. night or do they simply hate/resent Saban that much?
Bruce Feldman (4:35 PM)
Interesting theory.. not sure.
Jim (Parkersburg, WV)
As a big east fan I am highly disappointed by the bottom half of the league so far (although the ACC doesnt even have a top half!). With games at Colorado, Auburn and USF at home, does WVU has to worry about SOS? And where is gameday this week?
Bruce Feldman (4:37 PM)
Bottom half.. it's pretty much everyone other than WVU and Cincy.. and you should hope the Bearcats stun OU. WVU needs to take care of its own business and just stay focused on that. Beating Auburn would help their cause and they got a break that ECU upset VT to up their resume.
Mike Bellotti (Eugene, Or)
How long till Chip Kelly leaves me to be a Head Coach at a big program?
Bruce Feldman (4:37 PM)
A year? If I'm an AD, I get your cell # in my phone.
Michael-Iraq
Bruce...as a Miami grad...where's the faith!!!!
Bruce Feldman (4:40 PM)
I think Miami's going to get back to being a powerhouse soon, but just trying to be a realist and true, I can't see them going into Gainesville with a first-time QB and winning. If you're a UM fan, you should hope the Canes battle and keep it within 14 and use that as a springboard for the rest of the year to grow. I doubt the ACC title is such a big dream now. Besides, who is really great in that league??
Jeremiah Johnson (Eugene, Or)
Im ready to burst out of Jonathan Stewarts shadow. How do you like my chances as a darkhorse Heisman contender this year?
Bruce Feldman (4:41 PM)
I don't. You're really an exciting running, but I think LaGarrette Blount is going to snag too many carries and there are too many other big weapons for Kelly to use.
Tom (Tempe, AZ)
Would you say that Rudy Carpenter is the best quarterback in the Pac-10?
Bruce Feldman (4:42 PM)
He's in the discussion with Tuitama and Sanchez is coming. I'd put Locker in there but he has little work with.
Kevin Saginaw MI
What's your thinking now on how Alabama finishes the season?
Bruce Feldman (4:43 PM)
Have to take them seriously, although they got people really fired up last year too and then hit some big pot holes. It's not like they;re going to "out-talent" a lot of SEC teams right now.
Chris Wells (Columbus, OH)
I'm going to throw 175 down in Southern Cal.
Bruce Feldman (4:44 PM)
You'd be the Heisman frontrunner then.
Dave (SLC, UT)
Did you catch a glimpse of Asiata bowling over Michigan defenders? Is he a diamond in the rough?
Bruce Feldman (4:45 PM)
Yeah, love that guy. He's a pig-tailed freight train. Hope he can stay healthy.
Mike (Denver, CO)
What do you think of the decision to pull the redshirt off Tyrod Taylor after one game?
Bruce Feldman (4:45 PM)
It's a bold move for a veteran coach to reverse field so fast.. curious to see how it plays out.
Dan Hawkins (Boulder, CO)
What are your thoughts of my Buffs after Sunday night's game against CSU?
Bruce Feldman (4:46 PM)
Getting better. Liked the young RBs and WR-KR Josh Smith.Sked's really tough though.
Sam (CHi Town)
LSUs defense good enough to get them back to the NC game?
Bruce Feldman (4:47 PM)
Maybe.. I think it's a bit of a long shot though, but if they can win at Auburn in a few months, I'll change my mind.
Nick (Morgantown WV)
What do you think of Pat White's arm?
Bruce Feldman (4:48 PM)
It's underrated.
Trey (El Dorado, Arkansas)
How do you like ULM's chances against my Hogs in Little Rock this weekend?
Bruce Feldman (4:48 PM)
Could be a low-scoring game. ULM's D wasn't bad against Auburn, but I think the Hogs play better this week.
Younger (Los Angeles, CA)
USC looked amazing as usual. No question they are the best team in football for the past 5 years but they also had the most talent. How long can/will this continue?
Bruce Feldman (4:49 PM)
As long as Pete Carroll decides he wants to stay at USC.
JERRY (ORLANDO)
BULLDOGS OR GATORS?
Bruce Feldman (4:50 PM)
Gators this year.
Rob (San Antonio)
Mike and Bob Stoops in a fight, who do you take?
Bruce Feldman (4:51 PM)
God, this is such a me question.. While I wouldn't underestimate Bob, Mike's bigger and also roomed in college with Roci Chiaperelli, the Iowa wrestling legend who's been training MMA guys for the last 15 years. I'll go with Mike.
Bruce Feldman (4:52 PM)
Wow.. I think I get that last night right and I spell Rico wrong.. jeez.
Brian & Rey from So. Cal
After we get done with "Beanie," people will be calling him Chris.
Bruce Feldman (4:53 PM)
funny.. we'll see soon enough.
Andy (Memphis)
Beanie Wells and Rey Mauaulga collide at full speed. What happens?
Bruce Feldman (4:54 PM)
It registers like 3.1. Rey Maualuga's like Greg Blue in war paint.
Dupuy - Louisiana
I figure LSU to drop two this year (UF and SC). Yes, I think Visor boy has our number this year. What say you?
Bruce Feldman (4:54 PM)
Not sure the Carolina offense is ready for LSU's D.
Tommy (Austin TX)
Do you think Tech has improved defensively after their showing agains E. Washington?
Bruce Feldman (4:55 PM)
It wasn't an impressive debut, so the jury's certainly still out.
Jake (KC, MO)
Glad to see your sticking to your guns and not going against Mizzou. It seems to me that there was just too much blitzing and that can easily be fixed. Your take?
Bruce Feldman (4:56 PM)
Maybe. I'd be a little nervous of leaving those CBs alone so much.
Justin (Chicago)
You see any of the immortal John Clay on Saturday? If so, what do you like for his future? Any running comparisons?
Bruce Feldman (4:56 PM)
Only got to see one red zone carry. That's quite a stable of RBs they've got.
Younger (Los Angeles, CA)
If T Willingham is fired when and where would he coach next? Or is he pretty much done?
Bruce Feldman (4:57 PM)
Maybe back as an NFL assistant?
Steve (San Francisco)
Where do you rank BYU if they beat Washington on the road and UCLA at home in 2 weeks? Top 10-11? Does this make them the top non-BCS school in your opinion or would you still be backing Utah?
Bruce Feldman (4:58 PM)
Yeah, probably top13.. It's not like Washington is a top 50 team and UCLA isn't exactly a powerhouse yet.
OregonOverUsc (Eugene, Or)
Why is Patrick Chung so underrated?
Bruce Feldman (4:59 PM)
He plays in the same league as Taylor Mays and Kevin Ellison. Nick Reed's underrated too. Chung's a great player..really smart..really sure tackler.
Lop (Anchorage)
Do you think Tony Franklin at Auburn will get the spread straightened out? The passing attack was a bit dismal in the opener.
Bruce Feldman (5:00 PM)
Needs more time to get the timing down. I think Todd will emerge there as a good passer though.
Bruce Feldman (5:00 PM)
3 more questions..
Steve, CA
We all know that USC is going to beat tOSU, but who's going to upset them this year?
Bruce Feldman (5:00 PM)
My guess for the teams with the best shot in conference are Oregon and maybe Arizona.
ryan (san diego)
thoughts on michigan's offensive line?
Bruce Feldman (5:01 PM)
They need a lot of work, but I think Greg Frey will get them straightened out and better by mid season.
Matt (Pcola, FL)
What conference is the best in your opinion and why?
Bruce Feldman (5:02 PM)
Check my blog entry from yesterday.
Bruce Feldman (5:02 PM)
Thanks for all the questions. Talk to you all next week.
