Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am sorry that I got off to an 0-1 start in my predictions. I will try to do better when I make my next pick near the end of the hour. I've gotten off to a slow start for the last 20 years, why change now...
Isaac (keyser, WV)
The West Virginia Mountaineers are going all the way this year, Pat White for heisman.
Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
If West Virginia goes all the way, then Pat White may win the Heisman. I don't think the Mountaineers are going all the way, and this weekend is a tricky game now. East Carolina has more confidence after beating Virginia Tech. West Virginia better watch its step.
Donald D (Eugene, OR)
Where do you think Jim Harbaugh will be working next season? That guy can flat out coach!
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
I don't know. I think Stanford is a pretty good place to coach but very difficult to win the national title there. Harbaugh could go somewhere else down the line, but right now I would say Stanford next season. It is a pretty good pklace to work.
Tommy, South Carolina
What happened to Clemson? Did those kids read their press clippings? How good is Alabama?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Number one, any time a team loses, the players are accused of reading the press clippings. The game was not a shock to me. Alabama is Alabama, and no matter how difficult the schedule is with games at LSU, Georgia and Tennessee, this is a program on the verge of being back. Or maybe this is a school that is back.
Hawai'i Fan, SC
Beano my question is, do you think the Hawai'i warriors can make it back to a national championship game this year, after loosing probably their best player, being Colt Brennen?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
This year...after the loss to Florida, I don't think so. Sip on another Mai Tai!
Ted, College Station
Were you surprised by A@M losing to Arkansas State?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
Naturally I was. So were the A&M boosters. Arkansas was down 10 in the fourth quarter before rallying to edge Western Illinois. Coach Sherman and Coach Petrino had tougher openers than expected, I guess. Arkansas scored with under two minutes left to win. With Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Texas on the schedule, A&M really needs to beat New Mexico this weekend. The Aggies fans should not make any plans for the Orange Bowl.
MU is not going to make a bowl game. They got mentally beaten by Utah, and they looked bad. Expect a 5-7 season from them.
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Michigan fans are rough. Americans are lucky you were not at Bunker Hill because you might have given up. It may be a long season for Michigan, but give Rich Rodriguez a chance for long-term. This season is a mulligan for the new coach. Let him get his own players in and working on this offensive system. Also give Utah some credit.
How come USC jumped over Georgia?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I don't have a vote. Ask Chris Fowler whom he voted for. It is a little early to care about this. As long as you are in the top 15 in the preseason polls, if you can unbeaten, odds are you will play for the national title. Yes, there will be exceptions but they will be rare.
Jason (Hamilton, OH)
I know this could be just a silly question, but does Cincinnati have a chance to hang with Oklahoma after the kickoff?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Hang is a word that can be used in different ways. Oklahoma will not lose this game.
Please say something nice about Papa Brooks at Kentucky. You are both old guys who love college football!
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Good win over Louisville, second year in a row. Andrw Woodson was not there. Too bad you have to play Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.
Do you think the schools with high academic standards like Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Duke will ever be able to compete in their power conferences in Football?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
Stanford has the best chance because it is located in Florida. Duke has no shot, though a win over Northwestern would mean a 2-0 start...the fans still look forward to basketball season even now. Vanderbilt would have a chance if it was in the ACC.
Beano, Should I be worried about the Hurricanes coming to Gainesville? We haven't beat them in like 20 years!
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
You hardly play them. Florida doesn't want to play Miami every year. Yes you should worry. By the way these teams next play each other in 2013. Tim Tebow didn't have to put up big numbers last week and the Gators still scored 56.
mike maddy charleston,wv
why is there no love for WVU. Pat White threw 25-33 and multiple touchdowns againts a D-I program and all people care about is beanie wells toe? thats backwards
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
It is one game. Don't get so upset, take a Tums.
Stanford is located in Florida!? That is news to me.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
My typist meant to say California. He made a mistake, sorry. No the school did not move. If you are an air traffic controller that would be a different story.
Ted, South Bend
San Diego State lost to Cal Poly last weekend...how could Notre Dame not blow out that team?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I presume that Notre Dame will. The Irish is easing up on their schedule in a quest for the national title.
Beano, What did you think of Mark Ingram of Alabama?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Impressive. The son of former NY Giants wide receiver Mark Ingram looked good, and Alabama had a dominant running game.
Eric (Venice, CA)
Hi Beano, How impressed where you with USC on both sides of the ball and the endless number of tailbacks? Virginia may not be great this year but they did play on a Jan 1 Bowl game last year.
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I mean it was against Virginia and I did pick USC to win the national title. Yes, I am impressed already.
Adam (Blacksburg, VA)
Beano, what do you think of Coach Beamer's reversal on Tyrod Taylor and how that will effect the team over the next few games?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
We will find out. I guess that means a lack of confidence in Glennon, but it is hard to say. We will find out.
nagle, big apple
Beano my man! I think PSU's offense will surpsrise a lot of teams this year. You think they can contend for the Big 10 sice Wisconsin and Michigan and maybe OSU (if Wells is out) are not their normal selves this year?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Number one, they play Wisconsin and Ohio State on the road. Penn State will finally beat Michigan so I see the Nittany Lions winning nine or 10 games. If Penn State was in the SEC it would lose at least three league games.
Ty (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA)
Beano, I listened to the podcast last week and heard you say UCLA has a chance against Tennessee, while Ivan was basically laughing. You were basically the only one who gave UCLA a shot. Now it's time for the rest of the nation to believe as well.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
The reason I said it was my belief in the home field, plus UCLA has athletes. Ot was not like the house was empty when the new staff took over. What Kevin Craft did in the second half, after four INT in the first half, is why people love sports. Athletes like Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and Roger Clemens are not why people love sports. Craft is the reason...
John (Columbia, MO)
Did you watch the Illinois-Missouri game? What did you think of the last seconds TD by Illinois? Seems a little childish to bother for that extra seven, when they could have beaten the spread with eight. It really accomplished nothing.
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
Well, he has a good observation. You can believe the boosters were upset that Illinois did not go for two. In the south, he would have been really criticized. Let me quote what Bud Wilkinson told me over 30 years ago...if the coach doesn't know the line, he won't be around very long.
Blake (Abilene, TX)
Beano, Is this underdog role for Texas in the Big12 the best thing to happen to them?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Underdog or favorite, Texas has to beat Oklahoma. The Longhorns could lose to Missouri in the regular season and still play for the national title.
Andrew (Atlanta, GA)
Looks like the voters were quick to take back UGA's #1 ranking. After being up 38-0 early in the 3rd, Richt decided not to run up the score like USC. Did Jeff Owens injury really drop the bulldogs to #2, or was it because the game was not televised?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Again, it doesn't matter that early. People saw the scores...the fact that USC won on the road against a bigger conference member helped a little.
Trojan trapped in SEC Country
Any chance the Trojans get jumped during a bye week?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Who cares...the Ohio State game will be more important, don't you think? A bye is really an open date...a bye means you advance without playing.
Marcos (Kansas City)
Hey Beano, does Kansas have any shot at a conference title this season? Or is that just foolish dreaming on the part of the jayhawks?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Kansas has a shot. If Oklahoma and Texas were not on the schedule it would be easier.
Given the blah weekend for college football match-ups, when will the like of ESPN/ABC start trying to force conferences into better non-conference games to entice viewers?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Last week was pretty good. This is just a sub-par week. The colleges do what they want. If you look at two weeks from now, with USC-Ohio State leading the way. There are a lot of conference powers playing lesser non-league schedules. Teams like USC, UCLA, Washington, they play tough schedules. Oklahoma, Notre Dame and BYU besides the Pac-10 is tough for the Huskies.
Should Fresno State be in the Pac-10 ??
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
No. That league is fine with 10 teams, and the Pac-10 plays a round robin. I give Pat Hill a lot of credit for what he does. That was a good win since Rutgers had Fresno State on the ropes in the first half.
Clearly we care about the rankings that every sports page/website boasts. Its the second headline on ESPN's homepage.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
People care about the rankings but this is not the time to panic. It is a little early. If your team wins it has a good shot to move up in the rankings.
Michael: (Ventura, CA) :
Beano, what's the magic number of losses for Fulmer to get the boot? If it's more than 5 (and it easily could be) is it justifiable to let him go? Would it be in good taste for him to resign if it were that many losses?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
I have to say it was a long plane ride back from the west coast. That was a tough loss for Tennessee. Playing in the SEC East, the Vols could lost five games.
mathieu (san francisco)
Hey Beano, you are now the face and voice of College Football since Keith Jackson retired, in my humble opinion. Did you get to see the Colorado game?, it looks like they could be very explosive. How excited should we be to see the shootouts that will occur between the Buffs, WVU, Mizzou and Kansas? Texas might be a fun one too. Ain't college football grand?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
We will find out about Colorado. The Buffs play West Virginia and Florida State plus the Big 12 games. Dan Hawkins is a pretty good coach; just look back at what he did before he went to Boulder. Thanks for the kind words. If I don't start picking winners, you may change your mind! My pick for this week is coming up shortly.
Rob (Charleston, SC)
Beano, if ND stays the course of mediocrity this season, do you see Weis getting the boot?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Notre Dame will win 8-9 games at least. If the Irish wins the first three, it could be a 10-2 season. He will be there after this season, and he can't go 3-9 but he won't. The pressure is on next year.
Charlie (Montgomery, AL)
Why did Auburn's pass offense not work saturday?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
Auburn still won easily. Tim Tebow didn't throw for 200 yards and Florida won easily. I would not worry. Auburn could have a battle against Southern Miss.
Is Alabama that good or is Clemson that bad.
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
It is one game. One thing I have observed about football ... too many games get overrated because they won. Too many losers get underrated. Alabama plays in the toughest conference in America, the SEC. It is one game.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Why does the NCAA play with the clock rules every year? Why don't they just use the NFL rules?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I don't necessarily agree with the NFL rules, but you may be right, it might be the best way to do the game. It is too early to tell the affect on length of games and number of plays. All I know is the season is here and two months from now we won't have baseball to talk about. I would miss those Royals-Mariners games.
If Southern Cal played Georgia's schedule (@S Carolina, @Arizona St,Alabama,Tennessee,@LSU,@Florida,@Kentucky,@Auburn), what would their record be?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Doesn't matter, USC has a very good schedule too.
MiKe MAddY (WV)
What do you think Rich Rod's chances are to salvage Michigan's season and possibly see a WVU-MICH bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Michigan has two easy non-conference games left. They go to Penn State and Ohio State. The best I see Michigan is doing is winning eight games. If he was in the SEC he would be in trouble. It was one game and Michigan showed heart rallying. He had three offensive starters back and any program that lost Hart, henne and Manningham would have trouble.
josh (senatobia, MS)
I think the rebels have good shot this weekend against wake forest with the revamped offense. What say you?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I think that will be an interesting game, Wake Forest beat Mississippi in the last meeting but the Rebels made a smart hire in Houston Nutt.
Shawn (Colorado Springs, CO)
Does Utah's win over Michigan leap-frog them to the front of BCS-bust talk? BYU and Fresno both delivered this week too. Who's your favorite?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I think it is a very good conference and that was an impressive win in Ann Arbor, Having a veteran QB like Johnson helps. I would call that league a toss-up.
I know this is a reach, but with Indiana having some good experience back plus a favorable schedule, do they have a shot at a major bowl?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
No. But the Hoosiers should make a bowl game.
I saw an article on si.com I think it was regarding heisman front runners and knowshon was not even in there. Your thought???
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Too early to talk Heisman...we have stayed away from it today. If he (Moreno) plays the way most experts feel he can, he will be a contender. That's especially true if he succeeds against such a tough schedule.
Brad (Jackson, MS)
How do you think LSU postponing the Troy game this weekend affects their preparation for Auburn in 2 weeks? One less game for developing their new QBs worries me a little bit.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
You have a right to be worried. That game is at Auburn. LSU has athletes, a good coach, but the league is tough. I think another game would have helped prepare Hatch more for Auburn, I agree.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Time for the prediction, I am trying to rebound to get the record at 1-1. Washington State is a heavier underdog at home than I feel they should be. The Cougars keep it closer. California 30, Washington State 21. I will see you next week at the same time, 3 pm ET. May your team win this week, and if not, I hope they cover for you. Take care.
