Chat with Georgia State head coach Bill Curry

In June, Curry accepted the head coach position at the new program at Georgia State. The team will begin play in the 2010 season and will be in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Prior to accepting the job at Georgia State, Curry worked as an analyst for ESPN. He has also served as the head coach at Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky.
Curry's book "Ten Men You Meet in the Huddle" hit stores August 12.

Coach, are you guys going to try to schedule in-state opponents to create some rivalries - Georiga, Georgia Tech?

I think what we have to do in the early going is try to do the in-state rivalry at a level in which we can compete. We are going to take it one step at a time. In the long term, anything can happen.

I'm an alum of a CAA school. What can you tell me about the quality of football that is played in that conference?
Bill Curry (4:08 PM)
It is excellent. Five schools were in the final 16 last year, Delaware is always good, and JMU recently won it all. Maine and New Hampshire are tough and Hofstra is making progress. Virtually all the schools have been playing well recently, Richmond being another example I forgot to mention.

what's the most important lesson you've learned from football?

Great question. The single most important lesson for me has been that no one person is more important than another person. The second most important lesson is that people who learn to care about each other, don;t worry about about their differences and develop a relationship that spurs a competitive spirit. That does not exist anywhere else. You get people from different backgrounds coming together and finding common ground which creates a bond that lasts a lifetime. Former players take care of each other into their 70s and 80s because they played together decades earlier. I really liked your question.

What goals have been set for your first season?

We want to be competitve from the minute we step on the field. Our goal will remain the same and that is to win every game no matter who we are playing. I have never been able to frame goals any other way. We are going to shoot for perfection and if you aim high and push yourself to be the very best, while you may never get there, and no team is perfect, you will reach excellence. So that is how we are going to start and that is how we wil continue.

Were Lombardi's training camps really as tough as it's been said?

Probably not. Shula's training camps were incredibly difficult. But in my book, you read about the difficult grass drills Lombardi made us do, but they only lasted 10 days. Shula's camps lasted 6 weeks...6 weeks of two a days in full pads. But they both did pretty well on the field during the games.

Who do you think is the best team in the country?

My gosh, I have been saying Ohio State because I think a lot of agnst has beenb built up as a result of their losses in the titel games. But then I saw what USA did at Virginia, not an easy place to play, and they dismantled them. So it looks to me that Southern Cal must be the best right now...but we will find out next weekend. I have heard a lot about Oklahoma as well, but I have not seen them yet.

Will playing in the Georgia Dome help you to recruit almost like how St. John's using playing in Madison Square Garden as a recruiting tool?

Yes, I think it will. There are young people who will want to play in the dome, although it is not the best reason to choose a college. The education is what it is all about. But the idea of playing in that great facility does make a different. I know if I were a basketball player it would turn my head to think of playing in MSG.

What compelled you to want to start a program from scratch?

Very good question. Well it is fascinating! I Have done a lot of things in my long football stint, but never this. And it shocked me that it was propsed to me, but I am a football coach. I could not restrain my excitement, and when I called my wife, who has a masters and PhD from Georgia State, she was excited too, which surprised me. And when we put our heads together we decided it was something that should be done so we jumped on board.

Bill, What do you think of Nick Saban @ Alabama?

Well I think the same thing that I have always thought. He is a great coach. And what he is thinking of now, after that big performance, is making sure that the team stays focused. They beat Tennessee and then lost 4 in a row last season. Nick needs to and will change the mindset of the reaction to a big victory. He is a great football coach.

how long did it take you to write this book?
Bill Curry (4:23 PM)
Well parts were written 6 or 8 years ago while I was keeping a diary and others this spring. The intensive parts were written over the last two years between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. while I was on vacation. It has been in my head, though, for a long, long time.
