Chat with Juan Diaz
![]() |
Diaz (33-1, 17 KOs) will meet Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20 KOs) in a much anticipated 12-round, 135-pound contest on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10:15 p.m. ET on HBO's Boxing After Dark. In April of '07, Diaz successfully defended his WBA lightweight title for the seventh time by defeating Acelino Freitas after he forfeited the fight before the start of the ninth round. However, this past March, Nate Campbell defeated Juan Diaz by split decision to become IBF, WBO, WBA Champion. This ended Diaz's undefeated streak of thirty-three wins.
Diaz made his professional boxing debut at age 16 on June 23, 2000 with a first-round TKO victory over Rafael Ortiz, after finding out he was too young to compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Send your questions now and join Diaz in chat on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET!
Juan Diaz (1:07 PM)
Thanks for all your support, everyone, on my comeback fight!
Ron (Lousiville, KY)
What have you done different to prepare for this fight as compared to Campbell?
Juan Diaz (1:08 PM)
What I've done differently is actually listened to my corner now! I was doing real well up until the Nate Campbell fight, but in that fight, I let a lot of outside stuff distract me. In that fight, I didn't listen to that corner, was stubborn, and it made me lose. I've tried to fix that problem in training.
CARLOS, HOUSTON, TX
WhaT up H-TOWN!? I guess it's redemption time now baby! I wanna wish you the best of luck on your first fight back from your first L, its all good. I believe your skills is what is gonna win this fight for you. What is the weakness of katsisidis that you will attack? or what is gonna b your overall game plan?
Juan Diaz (1:09 PM)
I believe Katsidis' weakness and strength at the same time is that he likes to get hit. If he doesn't, it seems like he gets mad. I'll try to work off of that.
Brian (Anaheim, CA)
Who do you see winning between Oscar and Manny, and do you see yourself fighting Manny in the near future?
Juan Diaz (1:10 PM)
That's going to be a good fight, but I have no doubt in my mind that De La Hoya will win. He is bigger and more skilled.
Matt Paras (Naperville, IL)
Hey Juan. What are your predictions on who are going to win the lightweight fights on the 13th (Campbell-Guzman and Marquez-Casamayor). Thanks
Juan Diaz (1:11 PM)
As far as Campbell and Guzman, it is a tossup. Both guys are very skilled fighters. Were I to pick a guy, it would be hard to pick just one. It's just whoever wants it more that night. As far as Marquez-Casamayor, I think Marquez will take the fight. And obviously, I'm going to the be winner in my fight!
briana (arizona)
heyyy i love you diaz!! im not mexican but your my fAAVV mexican boxer most of the ppl here in arizona love u because they aree all mexican i got a question for you would you move up in wieght to junior welter wieght to catch manny pacqiou b4 marquez does? or a possible match of mexicans against marquez? for a shot at manny..???
Juan Diaz (1:12 PM)
Right now, I'm concentrating on Katsidis. After this win, I'm going to sit down and look at my options-whether it's to stay at lightweight or move to junior welterweight.
mitchel-houston
Juan. I paid good money to sit ringside on Saturday night. How do you feel fighting in front of all the hometown fans?
Juan Diaz (1:13 PM)
It's a great pleasure. I'm very excited and I've done it before. This time it will be a much bigger crowd. It's like icing on the cake. I never expected to be fighting for a championship, and to do it in front of my hometown crowd will be a great experience.
fernando beltran
hey jaun im your biggest fan no doubt about it i tryed buying a ticket for your match with katsidis but didnt have enuf money but i think you will wwin with you pressure and power i think if you do what you do to popo frietas youl get passed katsidis his chin is questionable but , if you win would you go for a rematch with campbel? or maybe a figth with guzman if he wins...or the winner of casamoyar and marquez ?
Juan Diaz (1:14 PM)
A rematch with Campbell is what I would love, but it depends who the winner is on the 13th, and if the promoters can get together and make it happen.
Ryan: Alpharetta, GA
Would you like to fight Nate Cambell again? If so, what would you do different?
Juan Diaz (1:14 PM)
This time around, instead of just standing in there and banging with him, i would move and give him different angles--punching and moving, stepping to the right and left, instead of just standing there, being a single target, and letting him hit me all night long.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Hey Juan, it seems you were doing well against Campbell until you got cut. Are you prepared to deal with similar circumstances if there is an accidental headclash or a cut caused by a punch against Katsidis?
Juan Diaz (1:16 PM)
Oh yeah. I'm definitely ready because I hadn't experienced that in years. I think the last time I got cut was almost at the beginning of my career. As this is years later, I know I was a champ and should have been prepared. That fight taught me a lot, and I'm prepared 100 percent for whatever he has to offer.
Juan Diaz (1:16 PM)
I wanna tell the fans to tune in Saturday, September 6 on HBO, because it will be a dynamite of a fight.
