Jeff (Seattle)
Sando, miss you on KJR on the round-table! What's your take on the Seahawks this year. Is this the year they return to the SuperBowl? Seems they are flying WAY under the radar this year.
Sando (12:19 PM)
I do think the Seahawks made subtle improvements that will help them this season. A victory in Buffalo would really set the tone. Anything less thatn double-digit victories is a disappointment for this team.
Kyle in Gilbert, AZ
Given the situation at WR for the Seahawks, how big of an impact does Courtney Taylor have to have in Sunday's game for the Hawks to the win?
Sando (12:20 PM)
Less than we might think. I expect the Seahawks to lean on the ground game while incorporating their backs and tight ends in the passing game.
Os (Jersey)
Mike, I know the outlook from most "experts" on the 49ers hasn't been optimistic. Yet last year they were a "sexy" pick for sleeper team. A true OC and what seems to be a better QB later. Nobody is giving them a chance in the division. The defense alone should give them a leg up on ARI, no?
Sando (12:21 PM)
You are right about perceptions. They can be misleading. I think the 49ers' offensive line underachieved last season. My thought coming into camp was that the offense would become at least mediocre, and that would be good for additional victories given the strength of the defense. Yet, I still wonder about J.T. O'Sullivan over the course of the season, just because he is unproven. And I wonder if Alex Smith would be ready to succeed if called on later.
dave - Denver
Any chance Morris is the goalline back in Seattle? Jones is just soft....right?
Sando (12:22 PM)
T.J. Duckett could fill that role. Leonard Weaver is another big back with running ability. I wouldn't draft a fantasy back from this team.
Andy (Albany, ny)
Mike, how short of a leash is J.T. O'Sullivan on for the 49ers? Does he need to perform well in the first few games to keep the confidence of the staff and retain the starting job for the season, or will they give him a chance even if he doesn't do to well the first few games? Do you think we'll see Alex Smith starting by the end of the year?
Sando (12:23 PM)
Mike Martz has much invested in this decision. I'm thinking he gives O'Sullivan every chance to succeed as the starter. I do expect growing pains. I could see the 49ers being hot one week, cold the next. The team seems to lack confidence in the backups, so the staff needs to make O'Sullivan succeed.
Ken (Tarzana, CA)
I know it's the Cardinals, but this was a team that was a field goal away from being in the playoffs last year. Why do few "pundits" have any faith in this team this year?
Sando (12:24 PM)
People are wise to the idea that "this year" is the Cardinals' season. They've been called a sleeper team in the past, only to struggle. I don't think that means we should dismiss them off hand. I do wonder about the final seven games of the schedule and whether Warner will hold up for a full season.
Os (Jersey)
Sando, if you could follow up on that. If Martz picks JTO over Smith, yet Smith isn't exactly "proven" either, why wouldn't we trust Martz's judgement that JTO will be better for this team? We were all on board with Smith, now someone beats him out and we're not sure about him?
Sando (12:25 PM)
I think this is where the player's pedigree comes into play. O'Sullivan has been in the NFL for quite some time. No one has ever thought he deserved to start ... until now. I don't think the 49ers had good choices to make at that position this summer. Being skeptical of O'Sullivan doesn't mean endorsing Smith, that's for sure.
Dan (Pittsburgh)
You think Shaun Alexander has a chance to go back to the NFC West?
Sando (12:27 PM)
Oh, perhaps if Steven Jackson or another starter suffers an injury. I'm not sure any team would pick up Alexander as anything other than a stopgap starter at this point. He doesn't play special teams and he doesn't project as a third-down back. He was a starter only and that's why his value takes a hit after a couple down seasons.
Bob (FL)
Daunte Caulpepper retired???? Whats your view on this tragic event?
Sando (12:28 PM)
I feel bad for the guy. He was headed for a brilliant career until that knee injury changed everything. Such a tough break. Culpepper and Moss could have become a Hall of Fame pairing.
AK (NYC)
Fantasy Question! Do you think Gore can be utilized in the same way that Marshall Faulk was under Martz? I think he has the skills to put up monster numbers again (a la /'06). Thanks!
Sando (12:29 PM)
I do think Gore should see his receiving stats spike. Then we'll have to see how much Martz commits to the run. THe potential is there for Gore to put up huge stats. He averaged better than 4 ypc with 1100 yards last season even though the offense was historically awful.
Colin (Boston, MA)
Mike, do you think the Bills offense did enough this offseason? How big of an impact do you think another year together, a new and hopefully improved OC, and the addition of James Hardy will have?
Sando (12:31 PM)
I wonder how well the team will function without Jason Peters (though Kirk Chambers has looked good at RT with Langston Walker filling in at LT). And I wonder if defenses adjust to Trent Edwards now that they have tape on him. Those would be my Bills-related questions. I do think Edwards looks like a capable long-term QB. He might even start fast. But most QBs go through growing pains eventually. Edwards might not be an exception. I know the Seahawks think the Bills are a good team headed in the right direction.
Phil (NJ)
What role will John Carlson have in the Seattle offense?
Sando (12:32 PM)
He should be a fixture in the base offense. The question is whether they sub him out for Jeb Putzier in the preferred three-wide package. They did that some during the preseason and if they do it in the regular season, Carlson loses some opportunities. The Seahawks love him and they are committed to throwing him out there and letting him play as a rookie. But they do like what Putzier offers in the passing game when healthy. Look for more two-TE groupings as well. They can incorporate Will Heller that way.
Danny (Visalia, Ca)
Hey Mike, what do you think of the niners young WR's, Morgan and Hill?
Sando (12:34 PM)
Morgan's physical talent and mental approach impress me. He seems like the real deal. Hill might benefit from becoming a little more aggressive, but that is not his personality. He is easing into things and getting comfortable. Hill has extra value on special teams. Morgan has a better chance to emerge this season if injuries limit some of the veterans.
RAY GORDON REID ( NASHVILLE TN 37214)
QUESTION TO MIKE SANDO AT 12.35 PM MIKE BRONCOS OR RAIDERS MONDAY
Sando (12:35 PM)
Let's go with the Broncos. I grew up a Raiders fan and even had season tickets at one point, so I now how much passion that rivalry carries. Count me among those who think Jay Cutler is a very good young quarterback.
Jim (Illinois)
So is this it for Alex Smith in San Francisco?
Sando (12:36 PM)
I don't see Smith returning to the team in 2009. He would really have to play well this season, and that's tough to do from the bench. It would be a great story, though, if Smith beat the odds and flourished down the stretch. He really is a sympathetic figure given all the things that have gone wrong for him in San Francisco.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
Mike, I tabbed Julius Jones as one of my starting backs in fantasy, he's going to get 18-22 carries a game, right?
Sando (12:37 PM)
Doubt it. Mo Morris stepped up this preseason. Right now we could be looking at a dozen carries for each. Remember, too, that Leonard Weaver can carry the ball and T.J. Duckett could project in short-yardage situations.
TK (Brooklyn)
With Jason Peters continuing to hold out, do you think the Bills should persue signing a guy like recently cut Willie Anderson? He would add depth and experience to a line that has suffered some injuries
Sando (12:38 PM)
Maybe as a stopgap, but there's probably a reason the Bengals cut their losses. I wouldn't want to count on Anderson to hold down that position. You might see a move like that after the opener. Teams have to guarantee veterans' salaries if veterans are on the roster for the opener. Not the case thereafter.
Phil (NJ)
I'm starting to read a lot about Tim Hightower. What's your take on the rook? Strengths/weaknesses?
Sando (12:40 PM)
He's just so much quicker than Edgerrin James at this point, so he stands out when you see him run. Overall, I like him. He did put the ball on the ground during preseason. Rookie backs are used to getting tackled, but they aren't always used to having skilled thieves trying to pry loose the ball. I do see Hightower getting reps this season, no question. He just has to show Whisenhunt he'll protect the ball.
Danny (Visalia, Ca)
Mike, does Justin Forsett have a chance to play in Seattle?
Sando (12:41 PM)
I've been a little skeptical on that front. I wasn't sure he would earn a spot on the 53 after fumbling in preseason and using poor judgment fielding a punt. Seattle simply has too many backs at this point, in my view.
Tom (Indianapolis)
Is Mike Holmgren really retiring after this year or is he bluffing?
Sando (12:41 PM)
Holmgren has been up front about possibly working again after taking off the 2009 season. I expect him to stay away in 2009, then come back to the league in some capacity in 2010. He would like one of those Bill Parcells-type jobs.
Justin (St Louis)
How do you like T Holts chances vs the Eagles and A Samuel this week? I think Samuel is in for a suprise.
Sando (12:43 PM)
Word from St. Louis is that Holt feels "night and day" better now than he did a year ago. His knee was an issue last season. I think opponents respected him without fearing him so much by season's end. Let's see how well the Rams protect Bulger before betting on Holt making big plays down the field. If Bulger has time, no question, Holt can make plays. I think he's one of the underrated players of the last 10 years.
Nathan (Manassas, VA)
Is Bryant Johnson going to have any impact on the 49ers? He didn't do much for the Cards.
Sando (12:43 PM)
Watch to see if his hamstring holds up. If it does, yes, I think he'll have an impact. He was the third option in Arizona, for good reason.
Nick (Spokane, WA)
I really like what I've seen from the Hawks running game this preseason...do you think they can keep it up throughout the regular season? Do you consider the Hawks as a legite Super Bowl contender?
Sando (12:44 PM)
I do expect the running game to improve significantly this season. And I do think Seattle remains a threat in the NFC. The Seahawks can win home playoff games. So if they somehow get home-field in the NFC, look out.
Brandon (Bellevue, WA)
Will Buffalo's Aaron Schobel calling Big Walt "Willie" fire Walter Jones up for the matchup Sunday? Does Walter Jones ever get fired up or does he just always cooly dominate REs.
Sando (12:45 PM)
He mostly dominates coolly. I do like to watch him on the play after he gets beat. It doesn't happen all that often, but when it does, sometimes Jones will bury the guy on the next play.
Danny (Visalia, Ca)
Mike, about Holmgren, do you see him taking on that position in SF?
Sando (12:47 PM)
I think that could happen, yes. He has a long-standing relationship with Scot McCloughan, the 49ers' GM. They worked together in Green Bay and Seattle. Holmgren would lend credibility to the franchise. I presume he would need assurances from ownership that the franchise is committed in every way. The stadium situation there is also a potential negative.
Nathan (Seattle)
MS, I saw on ESPN that Branch was cleared to play sunday. Holmgren said yesterday that it would be up to Branch to decide if he was ready to play or not. Whats the latest on his status for sunday?
Sando (12:48 PM)
I do not expect Branch to play this week. I think he has a better chance to play in the second game.
Ricky (Indianapolis, IN)
Mike, you are covering the West and you drew the short straw for the earliest chat? I would protest! Would you argue that Manny Lawson returning could be the biggest "offseason" addition for the Niners, given they desperately need a force on the outside to get to the QB?
Sando (12:50 PM)
Not a problem. I'm up by 5 PT each morning, so no early wakeup call for the chat. Mike Martz is probably the No. 1 addition for this team. Then I would pair Justin Smith with Manny Lawson. I'm thinking Lawsom will need a few games to get his confidence back. After that, the 49ers think he can become a very good player.
Anthony: NYC
Think A. Smith will reunite with Norv Turner next year as River's backup? I think it's good possibility, but I hope it won't happen as I'm a huge Chiefs fan. Maybe Smith can try out for the Chiefs? He's still fairly young and would fit Herm's rebuilding plans.
Sando (12:51 PM)
That would make a lot of sense. Smith needs some time to rebuild his confidence. Norv Turner believed in him and saw some similarities to a young Troy Aikman in terms of demeanor and approach.
Brandon (Bellevue, WA)
Who would you rather have leading your team into the Playoffs: Romo, Hasselbeck, or Brees?
Sando (12:53 PM)
I think Romo will be very dangerous once the Cowboys get over the hump in the playoffs. That team needs to get a first-round home game against an overmatched opponent. I would take Hasselbeck at this point based on his postseason experience. Then I would go with Brees, followed by Romo. I'm not sure how long Romo can be kept down, though. This might be his season.
Tom (Starbucks)
Should I start Logan Payne this week?
Sando (12:54 PM)
I'm thinking not. He has no track record in the regular season.
Ken (Tarzana, CA)
I'm interested why the media isn't reporting that Boldin's agent is Drew Rosenhaus? Is it any coincidence that his antics are being orchestrated by the same guy who represents Chad Johnson and Terell Owens?
Sando (12:56 PM)
I'm pretty sure Ronsenhaus' role has been reported. The Arizona Republic pointed to that in particular.
Eric (Sioux City)
Will Lawrence Jackson be the Seahawks starting RDE early this season? Tapp had one very good game, but was marginal the other 15.
Sando (12:57 PM)
Yes, I do think Jackson will open the season as the starter. Tapp projects as more of a pass-rush guy. Look for Jackson to slide inside to DT in the nickel, making way for Tapp. And look to see how well Patrick Kerney holds up on the other side. Tapp could conceivably get reps there if Kerney needs relief.
Tom (Chicago)
Cards or Niners this week? I understand Martz is a big addition, but is it going to translate in Week 1?
Pat Yasinskas (12:58 PM)
All right, I'll try to live up to the standard set by Mike Sando. As you know, I cover the NFC South. We'll try to focus on that, but I'll take other questions as well. Let's roll.
Sando (12:58 PM)
I'm on the record going with the Cardinals, but 49ers fans have reminded me -- repeatedly -- that SF swept that series last season. I'm just not sure about O'Sullivan, but we shall see. Martz has had success with unknown QBs before.
Jim (Seattle)
How will the Hawk's D be this season one of the 6 best maybe?
Jack (Toronto)
How sad is it as a Bears fan, that the potential availability of Alex Smith in 09 is viewed as an upgrade?
Sando (12:59 PM)
I might not go that far. A healthy Marcus Tubbs could have put that unit over the top. A healthy, productive Kerney does make Seattle's line one of the best. Adding Jackson in the draft helped depth. And having Rocky Bernard in a contract year shouldn't hurt once he returns from suspension.
Steve (Issaquah, Wa)
Mike, With the Seahawks injuries at WR do you see them making an attempt to sign Joe Horn? thanks.
Sando (1:00 PM)
Pretty sad. No doubt Bears should have done more to address QB situation in the offseason.
Sando (1:00 PM)
Not likely. I see no chance of that happening before the opener and very little chance thereafter.
Nathan (Manassas, VA)
Who you got winning the division? I like the Saints, but if Delhomme stays healthy, maybe the Panthers.
Sando (1:01 PM)
I picked the Saints. But Panthers could be right there if Delhomme's healthy. Bucs aren't out of it either.
Andy (albany, ny)
Do you think Jeff Garcia makes it through the whole season as starting qb for the Bucs? They have a ton of qb's including Griese who had his best years under Gruden. Also, will they get anything out of Michael Clayton or Cadillac Willams?
Andy (Albany, Ny)
What impact do you see the additions of Takeo Spikes and Ahmad Brooks having on the 49ers defense this year? They were pretty much stacked already in terms of LB, but you can't deny both player's talent and potential. Will they really help though? What kind of defense will we see in SF this year?
Sando (1:02 PM)
Garcia's got a history of injuries. Griese's a solid backup. There wouldn't be a big drop off if they had to go with him. Don't think you'll see Cadillac this year. Clayton - probably the No. 4 receiver.
Nima (Charlotte, NC)
Do the Panthers have the weapons on offense (sans smith) to beat the Chargers on the road?
Sando (1:03 PM)
Brooks isn't going to play unless something happens to Patrick Willis (or, down the road, if the "Ted" position remains an issue). Spikes should help if healthy. I do wonder about him holding up for a full season. Jeff Ulbrich is starting ahead of him for now.
Pat Yasinskas (1:03 PM)
Obviously, it's going to be tough. They'll have to run the ball very well and play great defense. Anything's possible.
Anterious (Ogden, UT)
Do you believe, barring any quarterback issues, that the Vikings can take the North, and far into the playoffs could they possibly go? As a die-hard Vikes fan, I say all the way, but am I just hopefully dreaming in a perfect world when the football stars align?
Pat Yasinskas (1:03 PM)
I did pick the Vikings to win the North. That means you should expect a 5-11 season.
Nathan (Manassas, VA)
Has the Saints defense improved enough for a deep playoff run?
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
Yes, I'm not saying they'll be a great defense. But it will be better than last year. With that offense, I think this is a very good team.
Eric Montreal
How will the carries in the Saints backfield be slip between Deuce, Reggie and Pierre Thomas. Is Payton just going to go with the hot back, or it will depend on the defense they are facing???
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
Defense? Who needs defense? I heard Trent Dilfer say he thinks the Saints' offense could be sensational this season. I think the defense should be improved, and I did predict a division title for the Saints. Not sure I see New Orleans winning on the road in the postseason, though.
Pat Yasinskas (1:05 PM)
That's a huge question. I think Deuce still will get the most carries. Reggie will get a good amount of touches. Don't think you'll see a lot of Thomas unless someone gets hurt.
Eric (Sioux City)
Does Willie Anderson have anything left? I'm surprised the 49ers aren't interested. Isn't he better than Jennings?
Chad (Savannah, GA)
The Saints problems vs the pass seem to stem from lack of a decent front 7. Have the Saints addressed this issue enough with Vilma and drafting Ellis or are we in for a ton of passing yds against again this season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:06 PM)
Vilma and Ellis will help a lot. But Grant and Smith have to provide more of a pass rush to take the heat off the secondary.
Pat Yasinskas (1:06 PM)
Jennings enjoyed a very good camp. Durability is the question with him. As for Anderson, remember that SF brought in Barry Sims as insurance this offseason.
Kim (MIAMI)
Calais Campbell progress??? Bust?
Chris (Franklin Park, NJ)
Hi Pat: I see people picking Miami on Sunday, based on the fact that Chad wants revenge against the team that cut him. While this may be true, are people forgetting that The Jets traded for Favre and cut Chad for a reason? Also, Favre has better talent around him. Who do you like and why? Thanks!
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
Got to go with Jets because Favre has better talent around him.
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
He hasn't even played his first game. I would never call him a bust at this point. Iwebema showed more during preseason. Campbell is a tall guy so technique will be important for him. Check back midway through the 2009 season.
Matt (Atl)
Falcons - thoughts ? (I'm quietly optimistic, maybe 6 wins, love Turner, and the O-line looked good in pre-season).
Bart, San Antonio
Mike, it is nice to finally see the Seahawks reported accurately, ESPN could not have found a better person for the NFC West blog. Thanks for all your efforts.
Pat Yasinskas (1:08 PM)
Thanks, Bart. Will I see you at the family reunion next year? We're not really related as far as I know. Thanks for the kind words.
Pat Yasinskas (1:08 PM)
Six wins are possible. Key is to get better as year goes on and build for next year.
Nima (Charlotte, NC)
There are some reports that Carolina's FO have put an offer on the table for Peppers. What do you think the chances are that they sign him to a long term deal during the season and if they do get it done, what does that mean for Gross and Gamble?
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
I wouldn't sign him right now unless the offer is reasonable for the team. Let him show he's bounced back from last year.
Greg (Crystal Lake, IL)
Is anyone going to trade for Chris Simms?
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
No, he's a free agent right now. Anybody can sign him.
Dallas (WV)
Do you think Joey Galloway will play this week? IF he does will he be effective? Thanks
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
Yes, play him. He's got a great history against the Saints.
Chad (DC)
Is Shockey a good play this week eve nthough he has played at all this preseason??
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
Yes, play Shockey. I think he'll be fine.
Os (Jersey)
When does Stewart get the starting nod in CAR?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
Quickly. He's Fox's kind of runner. DeAngelo's not.
Dan (Pittsburgh)
Is Roddy White turning into a star wr?
Pat Yasinskas (1:12 PM)
Great talent. But you've got to give Ryan some time to develop.
Tod (Chapel Hill)
Would any WR from the Titans/Dolphins/Ravens/49ers be an upgrade over DJ Hackett on my fantasy team?
Pat Yasinskas (1:13 PM)
No necessarily. With Smith out, Hackett could put up some numbers the first two weeks.
Steve (NY)
Who has more Star pontential Mario Williams or Justin Tuck?
Pat Yasinskas (1:14 PM)
Mario Williams.
What the H?
Skins Giants today and we don't get an NFC East blogger?! How do you (any of you) see the Skins doing this year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
I like Zorn and I think Campbell's going to be good. I picked Redskins fourth because it's a tough division. But they're capable of competing and doing much better than fourth.
Terry (Charlotte)
Did you watch all of Carolina's pre-season games?? If you did, you may retract your statement abotu DeAngelo not being Fox's guy...
Pat Yasinskas (1:16 PM)
Let's see what happens in the regular season.
Willis (Hartford)
Will kurt Kurt Warner or Osullivan triumph in their matchup this week?
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
Warner. Cards have the better team.
sAM (va)
Pat Please Help!!!!!With J. Lewis hamstring injury, who is the better start this week?? Rosters have to be set today at 7:00 pm. Lewis vs Cowboys Fargas vs Denver L. White vs Jags. Please help.
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
Just a hunch - start Fargas.
Hank (Miami)
What happened to Dwanye Jarrett?
Pat Yasinskas (1:18 PM)
He had a horrible rookie year. But they're hoping he bounces back. With Smith out first two games, Jarrett will get a chance to show if he's got anything.
Efrain (Bayonne NJ)
Who will have a better year for the Bucs, Dunn, Bennett or Graham?
Pat Yasinskas (1:19 PM)
Graham. Dunn will be the backup. Bennett may not even be active this week - or most weeks.
Eric (Sioux City)
How are Kalil and Otah progressing?
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
Very well. Panthers coaches were thrilled with Otah as soon as he got there. You can just tell he's for real. Kalil's got to show it in games, but he's smart and has lots of potential. Should be pretty good.
Peter (DC)
I can vouch for DeAngelo Williams, all of his runs were power runs through the middle. Wish Redskins could've stopped him, but it looks like Carolina has 2 good backs, and Carolina would be smart to give them both plenty of touches.
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
Two good backs is what Fox has wanted for a long time. He may finally have that.
Cam (Tampa)
How do you think Maurice Stovall will do this year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:21 PM)
Wouldn't count on much. It'll be Galloway, Bryant and Hilliard as the main guys.
Chuck (St. Paul (get Palin out of here))
Did Culpepper really turn down a one year deal with Green Bay before the draft? Seems like he did this to himself, if so. I would think he could still play in this league considering some of the guys currently in the league. Thanks.
Pat Yasinskas (1:23 PM)
I've heard Culpepper did turn down Green Bay. That might not have been the best fit. But there's no question the guy should be in the league somewhere. He's better than a lot of the backups in the league.
Scott (NC)
Glad to hear about Kalil and Otah, but what happened to Fonoti. He went from starter to being cut. Is he just too slow footed.
Pat Yasinskas (1:23 PM)
Weight's always been an issue with him. Everybody signs him and gets their hopes up and gets let down.
AK (NYC)
How do you project Shockey to fit in on the Saints offense? He's obviously an upgrade, and will provide a nice target for Brees, just needs to stay healthy. He was used too much as a blocker in his latter days with the G-men.
Pat Yasinskas (1:24 PM)
Don't think you'll have to worry about that. Saints brought him in to catch passes and Payton knows how to use him.
Brandon Bellevue, WA)
Who would you rather have leading your team into the playoffs: Romo, Hasselbeck, or Brees?
Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)
Know what? I'll take Brees. Not saying he's more talented, but I think he might be the best leader.
Daniel (Athens, Ga)
What are your thoughts on Sam Baker? I've never seen an Offensive Lineman on his butt as much as he is.
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
He's having a rough start and everybody's going to come after him. He's got some potential, but he's going to have to grow up in a hurry. And the Falcons are going to have to give him some help from the tight ends.
Mike (PN)
A biased Penn State fan, even I was surprised at Dan Connors poor play. I know its early, but Eagles rookie Joe Mays looks like a much better pro. Can Connor play SLB?
Pat Yasinskas (1:27 PM)
I grew up a Penn State fan and like Connor a lot. But I think his best chance in NFL is in the middle.
Dan (Pittsburgh)
Why was Tampa Bay so interested in Sean Mahan?
Pat Yasinskas (1:28 PM)
The Davin Joseph injury left them short on depth in the interior. They obviously knew Mahan and felt safe with him.
Reggie, Denver,CO
What do you think of Brandon Marshall, i think he could be the best reciever in the league in a very short time
Pat Yasinskas (1:29 PM)
He could be, He's already pretty darn good.
Joe (Huntsville,AL)
Is Talib the real deal for Tampa?
Pat Yasinskas (1:30 PM)
Yeah, fantastic athlete. Plus, that's a great defense to get thrown into. They'll bring him along slowly as the nickel guy, but he'll be good right away.
Joe (Huntsville,AL)
Please give me 3 reason why I should ever watch a Falcons game?
Pat Yasinskas (1:32 PM)
Great question and I'm giving it some deep thought and having trouble coming up with three answers. Michael Turner's the best positive answer I can give you.
bud (chapel hill)
testaverde? will the panthers pick him up this season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
Hope not. That would be a desperation move. No disrespect to Vinny. He did as well as he possibly could last year. But, come on, he's 44.
Vince (New Jersey)
Give me 3 reason why I should beieve in the Carolina hype
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
1. Fox can coach. 2. Delhomme's healthy. 3. Peppers looks like he may show up this year.
Steve Dallas, TX
Do you really think Seattle can beat out Dallas in the playoffs?
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
Seattle's got an easy division. Dallas has a tough one. We'll see what happens.
Jake (Cincinnati)
Do the Bengals have any possible chance in possibly getting a wild card spot?
Pat Yasinskas (1:35 PM)
Sure, they've got a chance. But they better play some defense.
Zep(Charlotte, NC)
Should Cowher fill up his Mercedes and get ready to make the drive down 85 if Fox & the Panthers don't make the playoffs?
Pat Yasinskas (1:36 PM)
He might have some time to see if the price of gas drops. But if Fox starts of rough, that talk's going to start.
Evan (Cincinnati)
Over or under 5 wins for the Bengals?
Pat Yasinskas (1:36 PM)
Over.
Jeff (SC)
If Connor turns out to be as good as you are predicting, will the move Beason outside?
Pat Yasinskas (1:37 PM)
No, I'm not saying Connor's going to be great. Beason's not going anywhere. He's going to be in the middle of that D for a long time. But Connor can be a quality backup and maybe develop into something down the road.
Steve Dallas, TX
Ok. thanks for answering my first question. Do you think Seattle can go into Dallas and win on thanksgiving?
Pat Yasinskas (1:39 PM)
If the game were tomorrow, I'd say no way. But that's a long way off. Let's see how things shake out.
Kev (NYC)
Is it possible that every team in the NFC Easy is better than the best team in the NFC West?
Pat Yasinskas (1:39 PM)
Yes, very possible.
Greg Springfield Mo
Saints or bucs win on sunday and why.
Pat Yasinskas (1:40 PM)
Saints. Dome will be jumping. Offense is good. Defense will be better. Plus, Garcia and Galloway may have some rust.
penny (chapel hill)
is steve smith a bad apple or just misunderstood? i pesonally love him.
Pat Yasinskas (1:41 PM)
Great football player.
Kev (NYC)
Is John Kitna the best QB in the NFC North?
Pat Yasinskas (1:42 PM)
Yes, right now he is. But look at the team around him.
Tom Seattle, WA
If you had to pick between Romo and Hasselbeck to lead a new franchise, who would it be??
Pat Yasinskas (1:43 PM)
At this point in their careers and factoring in age, I'd go with Romo.
Sam (va)
Galloway vs Saints or Stallworth vs Cowboys?
Pat Yasinskas (1:43 PM)
Galloway vs. Saints. There could be some rust, but look at his history against Saints.
Jeremy (NYC)
Pat, what do you predict the distribution of carries are b/w Deangelo and Stewart are this week?
Pat Yasinskas (1:44 PM)
Just a guess - 60-40 in favor of DeAngelo.
John Dallas, TX
Is Romo as good as everyone thinks or is it just because of the players around him?
Pat Yasinskas (1:45 PM)
Romo's pretty darn good on his own, but there's no question he's helped by a very good team around him.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
Pat, the Browns are winning the North, right?
Pat Yasinskas (1:46 PM)
Steelers were my pick.
Chad (DC)
TE Question (they are alwasy fun),, J. Shockey vs Bucs or Owen Daniels vs Pitt??
Pat Yasinskas (1:46 PM)
Flip a coin. I'd go with Shockey.
Ryan (Philly)
Speaking of Jonathan Stewart, when do you think he gets the nod as the starter?
Pat Yasinskas (1:47 PM)
No, Fox will start DeAngelo. He always favors the veteran. But you'll see a lot of Stewart.
Eric (Sioux City)
What do you think of Carolina's other rookie, Charles Godfrey. He was one of college's best tackling CB the past two years, and could be this season's Tanard Jackson.
Pat Yasinskas (1:47 PM)
The Panthers sure think so. They've put him out there from Day One. They think he's going to be real good.
Steve (Norwalk, CT)
Maybe I'm a biased Jet fan, but how are people picking the Dolphins to win? The Jets got one of the top QBs in the league to replace a QB that now STARTS for the Dolphins. The Jets O-line has done a 180 and the defense is drastically improved. Where all of a sudden do people see the Dolphins winning? Just because Chad wants revenge?
Pat Yasinskas (1:48 PM)
I'm not arguing with you on that. I think the Jets will win this week and win more games than the Dolpins overall.
Garry(Charlotte)
Pat what do u see out of Dante Rosario this year.
Pat Yasinskas (1:49 PM)
Liked what I saw out of him the end of last year. Still, I think he'll split time with Jeff King in an offense that's not going to throw to the TE an awful lot.
Dave (Afton, VA)
The Saints are good and will be in the Dome Sunday.....how much will Vilma help the defense....will he return to his Pro Bowl days for the Saints?
Pat Yasinskas (1:50 PM)
Yes, I think he will help a lot. He's a much better fit in the 4-3. He's also healthy and happy.
Jeremy (Albany NY)
what do you think will come of Forte and Mendenhall.. and would you start either this week over Grant??
Pat Yasinskas (1:51 PM)
Like them both. Just a hunch and don't hold it against me if I'm wrong, but I'd go Mendenhall.
Johnel (IN)
Has Saints rookie CB, Tracey Porter, been as impressive as I've been reading? Will he be starting by the end of the year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:51 PM)
He might be starting very soon. He might be better than Randall Gay right now.
Aaron, Aurora
how will the duo of R. Brown / Williams look? who get more carries??
Pat Yasinskas (1:52 PM)
I think Ricky's going to be the guy.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Hey Pat, thanks for the chat. Going back to contracts, the Panthers are going to have 3 primo free agents at the end of the season (Gross, Peppers and Gamble) They cant franchise Peppers because of his contract. Who do you see staying and going?
Pat Yasinskas (1:53 PM)
I'd wait and see how Peppers starts off the year. If he starts well, go ahead and pay him. If he doesn't, let him walk and pay the other two.
Joe (Huntsville,AL)
Withe Jets benefit more from a physical or teaching aspect with the Faneca signing?
Pat Yasinskas (1:54 PM)
Yes, Faneca makes the whole line and the whole offense a lot better.
Eric (Sioux City)
why did the Saints cut Orien Harris? I know it was against 2nd stringers, but he was very good this preseason. I think he will help Cinci's rotation.
Pat Yasinskas (1:55 PM)
I'd liked Harris in preseason, too, and was surprised they cut him. Think they were trying to sneak him back onto practice squad and that obviously didn't work.
Paul (Lorain, OH)
About the Browns. Should we be cocerned by all the injuries and going 0-4 in preseason? Or will the starters be fine on time.
Pat Yasinskas (1:56 PM)
Never be concerned about a preseason record. It means absolutely nothing.
Tyler (Sacramento, CA)
How could you rank the Cowboys 3rd in the East? You really think they're gonna miss the playoffs? No way!
Pat Yasinskas (1:57 PM)
Relax, it was just a preseason pick. It doesn't mean anything.
Trent Seattle, WA
Do you think that Hasselbeck and company have a chance to send Holmgren out to retirement with one last ring?
Pat Yasinskas (1:58 PM)
Yes, anything's possible. They need to roll through a weak division and they should be able to do that. Not saying it will happen, but it's possible.
John Richmond Va
Hey fellas, do you see Miami as a .500 team this season IF Pennington can stay healthy and Ricky can stay clean?
Pat Yasinskas (1:59 PM)
Nope. Even with what you say, they'll be below .500.
John(Cinci)
Orien Harris follow up. You mean the Bengals actually made a nice personnel addition. Baby steps.
Pat Yasinskas (2:00 PM)
LOL! Yeah, right now, I'd say it's a good move. But that could change.
Pat (Omaha)
Not too many people like Croyle. But if you compare his first 6 games to that of the Manning brothers first 6 games, he has fewer INTs, a better pass rate and better completion rate. And only 1 less TD then Peyton. Shouldn't we give Croyle a chance before we judge his playing abliity. Whats you feeling on Croyle?
Pat Yasinskas (2:01 PM)
All right, I'm going to hand it off to Bill Williamson of AFC West fame. Thanks. Enjoyed it.
Bill Williamson (2:02 PM)
Hey guys, it's Bill Williamson and I'm ready for my first chat ever. Let's do it
Len, Los Angeles
Bill, how do you feel about competing with John Elway? http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/sep/03/elway-promote-fantasy-football-web-site/
Bill Williamson (2:03 PM)
I will I'll lose that one every time, Len.
Chad (DC)
Bill, is Fargas a good start this week against a weak Denver D or would you go wth J. Lewis vs Cowboys? Thanks
Bill Williamson (2:05 PM)
Chad, I am not a huge fantasy guy but Fargas is an interesting call. With McFadden and Bush, who knows how many carries Fargas will get. I'd wait a couple of weeks to see how it shakes out before using any Oakland tailback.
Brian (Boise, ID)
Merriman, playing injured...smart and gutsy or career threatening stupid?
Bill Williamson (2:07 PM)
Brian, lets go with gutsy for the moment. Merriman is being a great team guy and he wants to win. I think what he is going is very commendable.
EDDIE G (ORE)
cAN NOT BELIEVE CULLPEPPER RETIRED, WHAT DO YOU TKINK?
Bill Williamson (2:09 PM)
Eddie, I covered Daunte in Minnesota. He's a good man. But I think he got tired of not getting a deal he thinks he is worth. I woulnd't be surprised if he was coaxed back in the league if a team suffers a major injury at quarterback this season.
Mike, Denver
Bill, do you find yourself being more critical of Denver since you recently covered the team? No one wants to be called a homer... love the blog, keep up the good work!
Bill Williamson (2:10 PM)
Mike, not really. I try to keep it straight down the middle for all four teams I cover.
Jeff (Herndon, VA)
Are the Chiefs as bad as the power rankings (after that great draft)? And do you guys have to do these chats from the office or can you be on a beach somewhere?
Bill Williamson (2:12 PM)
Jeff, the Chiefs are deserving of a low ranking now because they are so young. But they will creep up the rankings as the season progesses.
cam (san diego)
will joe horn or aaron brooks find a team?
Bill Williamson (2:13 PM)
I think Horn could find work next week. As far Brooks, he list moved up the list with Culpepper's retirement.
Eric (Sioux City)
The Chiefs are that bad, but good for Herm for rebuilding an old, mediocre team. With another solid draft, they could be competing by 2010.
Bill Williamson (2:15 PM)
Yes, I agree. The Chiefs, who have had two straight good drafts, are another good draft from being a contender in 2010.
Chase (Atlanta, GA)
Who are the surprise teams in the NFC and AFC this year?
Bill Williamson (2:16 PM)
Let's go with Houston in the AFC and Minnesota in the NFC.
Mike (Los Angeles)
With marcus McNeil out this Sunday, is there any cause for concern that L.J. Shelton will be going up against a rejuvinated and motivated Julius Peppers? Also, what do you expect to see from LT, Rivers and gates this weekend?
Bill Williamson (2:18 PM)
Yes, there is a lot of concern. McNeill is a man but so is Peppers. Shelton is solid but Philip Rivers may have to watch himself a little more careful. If the Panthers are to pull off an upset, it could be because of this matchup.
Al Davis, Alameda
I like you son, I don't like Adam Schefter but you are allright.
Bill Williamson (2:19 PM)
You're making me misty, Al.
Scott
DeSean Jackson: Viable WR3 or one year away?
Bill Williamson (2:20 PM)
Stud. A difference maker.
Tim (Phoenix)
Bill, Have you heard any reports about Marcus McNeil's injury and/or negotiations with Willie Anderson?
Bill Williamson (2:21 PM)
The Chargers have talked to Anderson for four days, Something could break soon. I know they really want him.
President Bush
Dont vote for obama. Whos gonna win the superbowl
crash (wv)
At the end of the season who will have better stats favre or rodgers????
Bill Williamson (2:22 PM)
If he stays healthy, it's Favre for sure.
AJ (denver,co)
Whatever happened to Al Wilson, since he got cut by the broncos last season i have not heard from hims since?
Bill Williamson (2:24 PM)
Al is likley done with the NFL. He had a few workouts earlier this year but he is about to miss his second straight season after he suffered a neck injury in 2006. I wish Al nothing but the best. I covered him for three years and I liked him better every day I knew him.
Tyson (Boston)
Hello Bill, Lets make you a psychic? What under the radar WR and RB will make everyone say WOW after Week 1 and where did that come from?
Paul (Denver)
Will the Bears defense return to dominance, or remain mediocre like last year?
Bill Williamson (2:26 PM)
They aren't getting any younger. I think the days of dominance are over.
Troy (Theodore, AL)
What's your thoughts on Romo? Could he get at least one playoff win this year?
Bill Williamson (2:26 PM)
He's may pick for MVP so he better come through.
Justin(Huntington Beach, Ca)
Am I the only person that thinks the Broncos are going to destroy the raiders on Monday?! Eddie Royal will catch, throw, and pass for a touchdown.
Bill Williamson (2:27 PM)
I think Mike Shanahan agrees with you.
Darren McFadden, Oakland
Why aren't all the analysts talking about me as the best RB in the game?
Bill Williamson (2:28 PM)
Why aren't you at practice?
Bill Williamson (2:28 PM)
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Williamson: Maybe it's from all the years of futility I've experienced as a fan but I just can't see the Vikings getting very far without a solid QB. Am I missing something?
Bill Williamson (2:29 PM)
I agree, but every other part of this team is good that Minnesota will survive not having a great QB.
Bill (Colorado Springs)
I believe the Broncos Offensive line has a chance to be the best in the division by the end of the year and gives the offense with Cutler's and B-Marsh's development to be one of the top offenses in the league. The big question then will be who will emerge as the #1 RB: Young, Hall, or Torain?
Bill Williamson (2:33 PM)
The Denver O-line is a work in progress with tackles Ryan Clady and Ryan Harris playing for the first time. It could be good as the season goes on. Expect Torain to be the guy when he returns in October.
Ty(Tallahassee, FL)
Am i crazy in thinking that the Dolphins are going to stomp Favre and the Jets in Miami? I dont see the Jets D being able to stop the Fins revamped O-line and the Ricky and Ronnie combo.
Bill Williamson (2:34 PM)
The Dolphins are alwasy very dangerous at home early in the season because of that humidity. It will be a different day than Favre's last game, for sure.
Chris (Chicago)
Come on Bill. Minnesota could hardley be considered a "suprise" pick. 3/4 of you pundits are predicting them to win the division. There isn't a better choice for a possible NFC contender that is flying way farther under the radar?
Bill Williamson (2:36 PM)
Probably true, But they didn't make the playoffs last year so I'm taking them. Plus, I couldn't think of anyone else. The 49ers made me look silly last year.
Rich (Topeka, KS)
McFadden or Felix Jones.. Better stats this week?
Bill Williamson (2:37 PM)
Just a hunch, go with McFadden.
Matthew Fort Myers, FL
How good with Turner be in Hotlanta?
Bill Williamson (2:37 PM)
I say 1,200-1,500 yards good. Love that kid.
joey (richmond ca)
hey you guys i was woundering how much of an impact will ashley lelie have this year or at least on the monday night game since javon walker might not play that much
Bill Williamson (2:38 PM)
Lelie may run a couple of deep routes Monday night. He can fly so maybe he can help.
Tallen (Phoenix)
How much do you think Norv Turner will use Sproles as a change of pace for L.T.?
Bill Williamson (2:39 PM)
5-7 carries a game. This kid is a weapon.
Anthony (NYC)
IF there is one thing that the Chiefs could hang they're hats on for this season what would it be?
Bill Williamson (2:40 PM)
Tight end, running back, No. 1 receiver and D-line. There's some nice pieces on that team.
Andy (albany, ny)
Do you think the loss of Michael Turner will have a big impact on the chargers? The last few seasons, he's been a good change of pace in different situations, especially late in games against beat up defenses. Does this hurt LT's production and does it make LT, who had a bum knee at the end of last year, more likely to sustain an injury?
Bill Williamson (2:42 PM)
I think Sproles and rookie Jacob Hester are nice backups behind L.T. even though Turner will be missed.
Ben W. Kelowna Canada
How bad will the Chiefs have to be to fire Carl Peterson and Herm.
Bill Williamson (2:44 PM)
I think ownership is behind these guys because of the past two drafts. I see them coming back.
Doug (Calgary Alberta)
Hi Bill, Any whispers on McNeill's injury being worse than a stinger? He had a back condition coming out of Auburn - add to that they are now after Willie Anderson - I'm concerned.....
Brandon (Bellevue, WA)
Name a coach better then Mike Holmgren?
Bill Williamson (2:45 PM)
Vince Lombardi
Anthony (NYC)
What type of numbers could we expect from Tony Scheffler this season? Could he take to the next level, he & Cutler are a nice combo.
Bill Williamson (2:48 PM)
Scheffler has been playing behind Nate Jackson in the preseason. But I do see Scheffler making an instant impact. He can stretch the field and Cutler loves him. Scheffler is a real weapon.
Matt (Baltimore)
Bill, got a FF question involving mostly AFC west players. Need to start two of these players while I wait for Steve Smith to come off of suspension. Eddie Royal, Vincent Jackson, Derrick Mason, Devin Hester? Your thoughts?
Bill Williamson (2:49 PM)
Go with Jackson and Royal.
Kenmar (Lake Havasu, AZ)
What is the status of LeCharles Bentley? Has he signed with anyone?
Bill Williamson (2:49 PM)
I thought he'd be signed by now. He's had some visits but nothing solid yet.
Bob (San Diego, CA)
Bill - great job of blogging the AFC West. How much of Rivers have you seen in training camp and do you expect a big year from Rivers for the Bolts thanks
Bill Williamson (2:51 PM)
Thanks, Bob. I was at San Diego's minicamp, their training camp for a few days and then a preseason game. Expect a big year from Rivers. I really like this guy. He's a great leader.
Adam (New Hampshire)
Hey Bill, do you think the New York Jets have a chance at beating the Patriots this year?
Bill Williamson (2:51 PM)
Maybe once, sure.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
Can we please stop saying what a great draft the Chiefs had this year? We have no idea how productive any of these players will be and they gave up the reigning sack leader in Jared Allen to acquire those picks!
Bill Williamson (2:52 PM)
Good point, Steve. But these guys are good enough to start as rookies. It's a nice start.
Bill Williamson (2:52 PM)
Good point, Steve. But these guys are good enough to start as rookies. It's a nice start.
Eazy-E
Is Jamrcus Russell 'bad' in a bad way or 'bad' in a good way?
Bill Williamson (2:53 PM)
I'll tell you Monday night.
Bryan (Dayton, OH)
Will the NFL allow Chad Ocho Cinco to have "Ocho Cinco" on his jersey? Seems like they have to since it is his legal name.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
Do you think that Shawne Merriman's decision to play was in any way affected by the fact that Rivers played through a significant knee injury in last year's playoffs? Maybe he thought he would lose some respect in the locker room if he didn't at least try to play.
Bill Williamson (2:56 PM)
I think Merriman saw the leadership of Rivers and as a captain himself, Merriman was inspired. All of these guys are very focused on the Super Bowl and Merriman's decision shows it.
Wes (Hampton)
What makes Brandon Marshall a "top" WR?
Bill Williamson (2:57 PM)
His size, his hands, his ability to break tackles. He's the real deal.
Anthony (NYC)
Will DMC be able to come near the neighborhood of what Peterson did last year? I have my doubts & thats just based off the offensive lines & they're style of play.
Bill Williamson (2:58 PM)
And that fact that Fargas and Bush are there. McFadden will get his yardage but he'll have to share the load.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
Before you go....Raiders or Broncos on MNF?
Bill Williamson (2:59 PM)
Overtime.
Bart (Caldwell KS)
Will Eddie Royal put up good numbers this year as a rookie?
Bill Williamson (3:00 PM)
As a starter, he will be given every opportunity to be a 50-60 catch player as a rookie.
Bill Williamson (3:01 PM)
Hey guys, great times. Thanks for all of the questions. Let's do it again next week. Enjoy Week 1. BW
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
Hello all...
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
Welcome to AFC South chat. I'll try to stay in the division as much as I can...
Matt (Sunnyvale, CA)
Jones-Drew v. Titans or the edge v. niners?
Paul Kuharsky (3:03 PM)
I'm a little wary of any RBs vs Titans at home. But I imagine you drafted MJD higher, and Week One I always go with the guys I drafted to start...
chauncey (teaneck)
Can David Garrard repeat his sucess from last year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:04 PM)
Depends on what you mean by repeat. Will he only throw three picks? No. Will he protect the ball, be efficient and give them chances? Yes.
chauncey (teaneck)
Will Vince Young improve as a passer this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
Can't see him being worse, though he may have to struggle through early growing pains. Fact is, they've won with him playing poorly before...
Shaun Alexander (Sea, WA)
Any chance I might end up in this division? Or am I doomed like Daunte?
Paul Kuharsky (3:06 PM)
Doomed as far as AFC South I think. Though who knows what happens if a key guy goes down...?
TK (brooklyn)
Whats the word on Titan's wr Paul Williams? Is this guy going to get some opportunities or ride the bench??
Paul Kuharsky (3:06 PM)
He's been really bad and he's getting yelled at a lot. I think they are trying tough love. Gage, McCareins and Jones will see time, maybe Hawkins. Barring injuries, no one else...
Gary (Greensboro, NC)
Will Anthony Gonzalez be Indy's new Brandon Stokely or just an ordinary 4th option in the passing game?
Paul Kuharsky (3:07 PM)
I think he's the next Wes Welker. Manning missing preseason hurt, but those two will have a big connection eventually...
Kev (NYC)
Order the young guys in how you'd pick them for the next 10 years...VY, M. Williams & MJD...
Paul Kuharsky (3:08 PM)
Right now I'd go MW, MJD, VY. But I don't think you're getting 10 years out of MJD...
Blake (Atlanta, GA)
Who to start in a deep PPR league in the W/T flex position: Justin McCareins or Brandon Stokley?
Paul Kuharsky (3:09 PM)
Stokley. I wouldn't play Titans WRs until they do something.
David Fairborn, OH
Any truth to Justin Gage breaking out this year? I listened to TMR and took him as a fantasy sleeper this year..
Paul Kuharsky (3:09 PM)
I wouldn't play any Titans WRs until they do something.
John (Victoria, TX)
Since the Texans are so close to be a playoff team ....anychance they go and get a "super star" player to help out?
Paul Kuharsky (3:10 PM)
Where are they going to do that? Not until free agency next year.
TK (brooklyn)
Will Jerry Porter play this week? who is going to be Gerrards main target this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:10 PM)
Unknown. I'd guess no. I think he'll spread it around. It doesn't have to be one guy.
Daniel (Athens, Ga)
The Texan RB with the most yards at the end of the season will be...
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
You have a dart I can throw?
Jay(Nashville)
How many touches do you see Chris Johnson getting in the first game?
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
How about 16?
Kev (NYC)
You cover the AFC South, but I'm sure you'd like to maintain a fair opinion...Do you agree with Clayton that the NFC East is a better division?
Paul Kuharsky (3:12 PM)
Maybe. We've got battling columns that I think will be posted today if they aren't up already. I've got AFC South, he's got NFC East. I think it'll be close...
Shawn (Dallas, TX)
Will W. Welker and D. Mason both catch 100 balls this year like they did last year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
I wouldn't bank on it from Mason with the QB situation in Baltimore...
Eric (Sioux City)
Any chance the Texans go after Peppers if Carolina doesn't franchise him? He, MW, and Okoye would form a decent line.
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
All depends on how he plays this year. He's got a lot to make up for after last year...
Richard (Knoxville)
Paul, who you got this weekend Jags or Titans?
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
Haven't decided yet. Honestly...
Chris (Manhattan, KS)
I have heard mixed feelings on Indianapolis' Defense this year...What do you think?
Paul Kuharsky (3:14 PM)
I think they'll be defending a lot of leads and do just fine. I don't know that the rankings will be as good as last year, but they may not need to be...
Sam (Washington, DC)
How bout them Redskins! Looking forward to seeing them rout the Giants who shouldn't have even been in the superbowl...
Paul Kuharsky (3:14 PM)
Yes, let's discredit the team that not only made it, but won it!
Chris A. (Houston)
IF the Texans can stay healthy (which is big IF for any Houston sports teams anyways)can you see them making a legitimate run at some noise in the playoffs?
Paul Kuharsky (3:15 PM)
No. Not this year. Unless other teams in the AFC South crumble with injuries...
Tim (IN)
How do you rank the divisions offensive tackles?
Paul Kuharsky (3:16 PM)
I don't really feel like i can rank them 1-4. Colts, very good. Titans, very good. Jags, not nearly as good right now. Houston, I like Winston a lot and hear great things. Brown is TBD...
San Jose, CA
Should I start Rickey Williams vs. the Jets? or should I put Tory Holt ahead of him?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
I'm starting Williams. But I don't have Holt.
Kev (NYC)
Colts 12-4, Jags 10-6, Titans, 8-8, Texans 7-9...How'd I do?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
Not bad. I have the Titans better than that, Jags a little worse. And I thinnk the Colts could lose five...
Peter King (SI)
Is it just me or does Williamson in his picture look like me?
Paul Kuharsky (3:18 PM)
Separated at birth?
David Fairborn, OH
How do you feel about Garrard this year? I picked him up in the 8th round as a starting qb instead of going for a Palmer or Roethlisberger so I could pick up Ernest Graham and Cotchery. Do I put too much faith into TMR?
Paul Kuharsky (3:19 PM)
He'll get you some rush yardage and he won't kill you with picks, that's for sure. But you're not going to blow away teams with your QB play, I don't think...
Paul Kuharksy (ESPN)
If I could have been had a career not in sports I would have been a _____?
Paul Kuharsky (3:20 PM)
A shepherd
Brandon Wildman (Licoln Park MI)
I want to know how people think that Jacksonville will win the AFC South. There is no way u can say they got better or the Colts got worse.
Paul Kuharsky (3:22 PM)
I don't think the Jags will overtake the Colts. But it's not unreasonable to suggest it's possible. You don't just put down on paper how teams got better or worse and total it up. It's not that easy. Maybe three Jags get way better and three Colts get old all of a sudden. I pick the Colts to win. But it's not heresy to suggest otherwise. It's an unpredictable league. That's what makes it so good...
Mike (Ohio)
Indy is going to be starting Charlie Johnson (a career tackle) at LG, Steve Justice or Jamey Richard (rookies) at C and Dan Federkeil (career backup) at RG against the Bears. How do you think they will fare?
Paul Kuharsky (3:23 PM)
Better than most people expect. Colts have a way of plugging guys in and not showing much drop off.
Brandon (columbia, SC)
Do you feel that Vince Young is on the verge of a breakout season. It just felt like all last year there were shades here and there, and it is just a matter of time before he puts it all together.
Paul Kuharsky (3:23 PM)
No, I don't feel he's on the verge of a breakout. I think if he progresses, it will be at a very gradual pace...
Mike P. (Sullivan, IN)
On some of the rankings, some people have Minnesota ranked higher than Indy. How can that be?
Paul Kuharsky (3:26 PM)
They are projecting Indy gets worse and Minny gets better. If all we did was rank the teams like they finished last year, what fun would that be? They are projections. In mine, I see the Saints getting a lot better, for example. So they are ranked ahead of teams that were superior to them last season.
Matt (Indy)
What do you think of Jeff Saturday's future in Indy? Injury couldn't come at a worse time...
Paul Kuharsky (3:26 PM)
Not good. Maybe in another year he would have opted for surgery. But if his replacment is bad, maybe it makes him more valuable.
David L (CT)
Warner or Brees this weekend for FF. Warner went nuts on them last year......
Paul Kuharsky (3:27 PM)
Brees. Don't overthink it. Brees every week.
David L (CT)
And I read above. You guys really that high on Desean Jackson? I'm torn between him or Donald Driver...
Paul Kuharsky (3:30 PM)
I like Jackson too. But you can't play a guessing game. You've got to go with the proven guy until you see the other guy do something. In my humble opinion. In the opinion of a guy who's never won a league...
Phil (NJ)
Over/under on Andre Johnson's games played with Matt Schaub this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:32 PM)
How about 12.5?
Todd (Houston)
Eric Winston follow up. Is he already a top five RT? Runyan, Tausher, Stewart, Diem, and Carey are the only guys you could make an argument are better.
Paul Kuharsky (3:33 PM)
He's very good and getting better. I don't know enough about 32 other RTs to rank him, though...
Jason (Cleveland, OH)
Ray RIce or Jonathan Stewart in the FLEX this weekend? Please help!!!!
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
Rice on matchup. But I stink at fantasy...
David Fairborn, OH
Owen Daniels or Ben Utecht?
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
Daniels without question...
charles (jax, fl)
Why are you down on the Jags? WR and OL are the same starters from last year which got us to round 2 of the playoffs. Plus added Porter and a couple rookie pass rushers.
Paul Kuharsky (3:35 PM)
Not as good without Meester and Barnes has not played well at all in the preseason and camp. Pass rush is hardly a guarantee. I'm not down on them. I see them in the playoffs. I just don't see them breaking into Indy/NE/SD territory...
Jason (Scarsdale NY)
Ricky Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Chris Johnson (please help me pick one, PPR scoring!)
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
Which one did you draft highest? I'd play him...
Sean (NY, NY)
Cutler in the Black Hole or Campbell vs GMEN tonight. Also, Ronnie Brown, Desean Jackson or Ray Rice at the flex (PPR)? Thanks Paul.. GO CANES
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
Cutler, in my opinion.
Unniversity of Minnesota
Any chance Dungy leaves and takes over for the Gophers after this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:37 PM)
If he leaves, he's going back to the Tampa area, I would think.
Ryan (St. Louis, MO)
If you had the choice of starting QB Drew Brees or QB Brett Favre in Week 1, Who woud you start?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
Brees. I think Brees is going to be huge this year. And I bet you drafted him much higher...
Matt (IN)
Where would you place Hayden and Jackson in comparison to other CB tandems?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
In that system they sure seem effective to me. Hard to measure agaist others without the framework of the system.
Luis (SB, CA)
Paul, Current trade offer: Ricky Williams and Run DMC for T.O. Do I pull the trigger?
Paul Kuharsky (3:40 PM)
I take the TO side...
Richard (Knoxville)
I didn't know this was a fantasy chat?
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
Ask non-fantasy questions. Seems to be all I am getting...!
Steve (Rochester, NY)
Paul, the shepherd comment makes me wonder if you're a Fletch fan?
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
Bingo. The cost of this chat is going in the Underhill's bill. Want the number?
David Fairborn, OH
Antwan Odom was hurt all preseason. Do you think he'll still do well for my bengals? I know you weren't high on him without Vander Bosch to begin with..
Paul Kuharsky (3:43 PM)
I think if he's asked to lead a line, that's not a great situation for him. As a complimentary player, he's quality.
Wes (Texas)
How long before Chris Johnson takes over the role as starting TB in Tennessee?
Paul Kuharsky (3:44 PM)
Actually starting a game means very little. Fisher defers to vets on such things almost all the time. The question is snaps. I suspect he'll start at 40 percent and maybe get to 50 or 60....
chris-maryland
how do you think tennesee will do this year and ive heard some say its time for vince to get his ticket out of tennessee this year and will chris johnson win r.o.y? and how far in the playoffs will we go if we get in?
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
The Titans won't be giving up on Vince Young any time soon. And I'm talking like 2010 at the earliest. I think they are a Wild Card team based on defense, run game and schedule...
Brian (Miami)
Why is Roydell Williams not on any team right now. The guy almost had 1,000 yards last year and seemed like VY's number one target. What did I miss?
Paul Kuharsky (3:47 PM)
He's not completely healthy. Also he's not that good.
Brandon Wildman (Licoln Park MI)
What's with all the buzz in Tennesse. They are not a good team, and there defense last year was a fluke. Where do you think they finish in the division?
Paul Kuharsky (3:48 PM)
Why was the defense a fluke? They have 10 starters and their nickel returning. It's a good defense.
Dan (Milford, CT)
Who's the Texans starting RB at the end of the year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:48 PM)
Slaton. End of the year they will be out of the running and it'll make sense for them to play him for the future....
Jeff (Indiana)
Paul I'm taking my first trip to Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday night. Have you been there yet and if so what should I expect? I believe they are going to have the roof open for that game
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
You'll really enjoy it. But the food is very average. Eat somewhere outside first. Give your self time to take a lap around the concourses...
Dev (KS)
I have to leave my computer please awnser the Plaxico or K. Smith I am begging Who performs better this week
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
Plax is proven. I'd go proven...
Eric (Sioux City)
John Cocktosten would like to know what you think of Steve Slaton.
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
I know that John Singlingding likes Slaton a lot, but thinks his best play will be late in the season, not early...
Desmond (Denver, CO)
Jamal Lewis or Owen Daniels? in a PPR (RB/TE Flex Spot)
Paul Kuharsky (3:51 PM)
I'm down on Lewis and the Browns and high on Daniels. But I am also often wrong.
David Fairborn, OH
People no longer consider Marvin Harrison a #1 wideout in Indy, right?
Paul Kuharsky (3:52 PM)
People on the team? In management? What does it matter? They think he's going to rebound, and if he does then he and Wayne are a handful. He looked very good to me when I saw him...
J.P., Knoxville
Paul, nice of you to do this. Any update on Jason Jones injury and any thoughts on the temperament of our two Texas studs(VY and Griffin) who both seem to have maturity issues?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
Jones did not practice today. I think Texas allows its stars to be a little immature, even fosters it. Bo Scaife and Ahmard Hall are not like that...
Frank (Pell Lake, WI)
Paul, if Peyton misses any time (which is unlikely) do you see the Colts playing a style of football similar to Tennessee as in good defense and a strong rushing attack?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
That would be their plan, yes.
Yungyu (Manchester, CT)
Reggie Bush for Calvin Johnson in a non ppr league. Which end would you rather have?
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
Johnson, absolutely.
Jason Chicago
if vince went 250/400 3200yds 20Td's 10int and 750 yards on the ground would that constitute a sucessful breakout season. he was great his first year awful last year because they lost Benneett & Wade Crumpler and Johnson are better then what they had last year. Losing Roydell will be HUGE though
Paul Kuharsky (3:56 PM)
Bennett and Wade leaving is why VY got worse? Interesting. If I am a Titans fans, I would take those numbers in a second. That would be excellent.
J.P. Knoxville
One more if you have it Paul, any behind the scenes info as to whether the team still believes in Vince? The fans haven't turned on him like they have Grossman in Chicago, but you have to think it is frustrating for the defense.
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
If I had any big info like that and it was off the record, you don't think I'd be talking about it here, do you? Outwardly, they express no doubts...
Brian (Indianapolis)
Is Jeff Saturday going to have surgery?...or are they still weighing the options?
Paul Kuharsky (3:58 PM)
He's decided not to have the surgery and the clock is for his six weeks...
Butters, Hamilton Bermuda
Do you see Addai having better numbers than L.T. this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:58 PM)
no
Jason Chicago
Yes those were his top two targets last year moulds was a BUST brandon jones got hurt Gage is Nobody's #1 Roydell was the only consistent reciever and he had his best week versus Houston when VY was Hurt
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
Bennett and Wade leaving were not the reason VY went backwards. Put any two guys in the starting spots and they are going to achieve certain catch and yard numbers.
Scooter (Rocky Top)
What do you think of the Titans new OC? I miss Chow.
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
You miss him or just wish he wasn't at UCLA?
Matt (Denver)
Sugar Mr. Poon? What do you expect from Ben Watson this year? Lost in the shuffle, or more like he played at the beginning of last year?
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
I'd rather have Owen Daniels, if you're looking at a fantasy perpective...
Craigle my Bagel, Seattle
who will be kurt warner's go to guy: Fitzy or Boldin?
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
Both!
chris-maryland
do you thyink the titans should make a run at joe horn i think it would improve our passing game greatly and we need a true #1
Paul Kuharsky (4:02 PM)
He would improve the passing game greatly? They have a bunch of WRs who can't get separation, so a guy who can't run well any more solves their problems? I disagree and don't expect him here...
Frank (Pell Lake, WI)
IF you were a Titans fan? So you were covering the Titans for many years and didn't come to root for them a little bit? Or because of contractual policies are you maintaining the middle road?
Paul Kuharsky (4:03 PM)
I root for good storylines and for good guys to do well. Also the Yankees and the US National Soccer Team...
Paul Kuharsky (4:05 PM)
I believe KC Joyner is right behind me. Hope he can do better for you than I did. Thank you all for your questions. Please check out the blog and hit the mailbag any time....
Steve Fitz (Cicero, IL)
Surprise surprise another ESPN guy who likes the Yankees. Will Reggie Williams put up #1 receiver type numbers this year?
Paul Kuharsky (4:06 PM)
Sorry, I did grow up in NJ. Reggie's 10 TDs in 38 catches looked pretty good to me last year...
Paul Kuharsky (4:06 PM)
Hit it KC...
KC Joyner (4:06 PM)
Hello, hello, hello!
James (Geneva, CH)
Just how bad IS Ellis Hobbs? It seems like every time he's in a big game he gets burned. And I honestly don't know why he was matched up with 6'5" Plaxico Burress in the Super Bowl.
KC Joyner (4:08 PM)
Ellis Hobbs is consistently a 9-yard YPA CB. The reason NE sticks with him is that they are a LB centric defense and don't focus as much on CBs. Once they get their LBs back where they want them, Hobbs will likely be looking for a new gig.
Page, Eller, Marshall & Sutherland (MN)
KC -What kind of numbers do you see the Viking Front 4 posting this year. And statistically speaking will they be the best in the league.
KC Joyner (4:09 PM)
If this group doesn't post at least 40 sacks, I think it would quite a surprise. Teams have always wanted to pass against the Vikes but you can't do that all day long with Jared Allen breathing down your neck.
Ray (Pensacola, FL)
Will Eddie Royal hold down a starting slot through the season in Denver and what is your opinion of him?
KC Joyner (4:11 PM)
Ray, I kept an eye on Royal this preseason and while I do like what I've seen so far, I still want to see him do it in a regular season game. I think if Stokely is healthy he'll hold down the #3 spot, as Shanahan said last year that Stokely was one of the best slot receivers he'd ever coached.
VK (DC)
KC. With Springs and Rogers both looking iffy, Leigh Torrence might get significant playing time tonight/this year. Is that a total disaster waiting to happen?
KC Joyner (4:12 PM)
Yes. He could cause so much destruction in that secondary that they will be asking the National Weather Service to name him as the 4th big storm this week.
Need Help!
I knwo this isnt a fantasy chat, but how can I go wrong with your imput? Patrick Crayton or A. Gonzalez this week?
KC Joyner (4:13 PM)
Crayton tends to do poorly against red-rated cornerbacks (i.e. those with YPAs of 7 yards or less) and he's facing one of those this week. Go with Gonzalez.
DJ (Minneapolis)
I hear a lot of negative talk about Jason Campbell. Giving that he is working with Zorn now and should have the same offense for a few years do you see him developing into a top 10 QB?
KC Joyner (4:14 PM)
Campbell's metrics last year were quite good so I do see him developing into at least a top 15 QB. Having said that, it usually takes time to master the WC offense, so it might be 2009 before we see Campbell in that arena.
Srikar (Fremont, Ca)
What is your honest assesment of the Raiders? Are they really as bad as everyone says they're going to be?
KC Joyner (4:16 PM)
Talent-wise, absolutely not. They have a very good roster physically speaking. I actually have them as a possible 7-9 or even 8-8 team if the ball bounces right.
Phil S (Cleveland, OH)
Who should be the Browns starting QB, Anderson or Quinn?
KC Joyner (4:17 PM)
Anderson. Sure, he's had some bad games but he's also done quite well against certain levels of competition. You can't take that for granted and Quinn very well might not be able to do that, or at least not right away. They are sticking with the proven commodity.
Wes (Texas)
How bad is Roy Williams actually? Is his coverage skills that much of a liability?
KC Joyner (4:18 PM)
He's not good (ranked 27th in direct coverage YPA) but there are a number of other good run safeties that did about as bad in that category, including Adrian Wilson and Donte Whitner.
Jonathan, Queens, NY
Peppers 20 sacks and dpoy, odds?
KC Joyner (4:19 PM)
I don't know that I'd go as high as 20 sacks but I would not be the least bit surprised to see him post double digits and be the comeback player of the year of sorts.
Lou (NYC)
KC, being totally realistic, how much does Jared Allen improve that defense? I know people want to predict 20 sacks, but where will the pass defense rank at the end of the year (barring injuries)?
KC Joyner (4:22 PM)
It's not just Allen that makes me say the Vikes sack totals will be high. Teams will now have to block either Allen, Pat Williams or Kevin Williams with a single blocker on a play. All three of those are capable of destroying even the best competition. Teams will still throw on the Vikes, so their YPG in pass defense will likely be in the bottom half of the league, but their overall effectiveness due to the pass rush will improve dramatically.
Younger (Los Angeles, CA)
Typically defending champs get too much respect but I feel the Giants are given too little. Yes they have injuries but don't you think that they should still beat the Skins by more than the 4.5 pt spread at home? Prediction?
KC Joyner (4:23 PM)
I'm still on the Giants bandwagon. They had the highest forced bad decision percentage of any defense last year and Osi's pass rushing skills were overrated to begin with. I've got it a 27-17 game tonight in NY's favor.
J (Milwaukee)
Whitner was also playing with a third string backup safety and three backup linebackers last year.
KC Joyner (4:25 PM)
Agreed, but that YPA was when he was in direct coverage, which means that he was singularly responsible for the coverage. I'm not knocking Whitner but rather pointing out that maybe Williams gets more grief for his poor coverage skills than he should (although some of that is probably due to my knocking him year after year).
Luis (SB, CA)
Hi KC, I know that you did a column on TE's and their effectiveness in the slot. Given the Cowboys' recent injury streak, how good can Witten be in the slot?
KC Joyner (4:28 PM)
Witten is just as effective when flexed out as he is when lined up as a TE but he was only thrown 33 passes in that spot last year. I think Dallas wants to increase that number to at least 50-60, so expect a really good year out of Witten.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
I was wondering where you were. You need to advertise when you move.
KC Joyner (4:29 PM)
Lane, my friend, we did things a little bit different this week due to it being the season kickoff! We'll get things back to normal next week.
kit mpls
Predictions for tonites game? Gmen or the Redskins?
KC Joyner (4:29 PM)
As mentioned in a post a couple of minutes ago, Giants 27-17.
Goodie (Tampa)
Kc, The last remaining Dolphin fan besides your brother has a question... should I hold onto Bobby Engram and wait OR pick up one of these guys: Vincent Jackson. Reggie Williams or Bryant Johnson?
KC Joyner (4:30 PM)
It really depends on the state of your WR corps outside of Engram, but I can say that Jackson might be the only one of those three I would go after. I just don't trust the other two to be consistent enough.
Mark (Denver)
Quit being biased to the big market teams. Talk about my Lions already. Lions fans have feelings too ya know!?!
KC Joyner (4:31 PM)
Mark, I'm originally from Michigan so believe me that I don't mind talking about Detroit! I think I answered a Lions question earlier but if I see another good one, believe me that I'll answer it!
Keren (Maui)
Is O'Neal a good risk for the Patriots?
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Deltha O'Neal is a very good pickup for the Patriots. He allowed only 7.0 YPA last year, so it likely wasn't a talent or production issue that caused Cincinnati to let him go. NE has shown they can handle volatile personalities so they should be able to handle and integrate O'Neal in their defense quite nicely.
Gary (NC)
Is there any reason we should expect a drop off in Wes Welker's production this year?
KC Joyner (4:35 PM)
One possible reason Welker might drop off a bit is if NE leans a bit more on their running game when they get a lead. They could want to protect Brady a bit so it wouldn't be a surprise to see that happen.
Jason (Nashville)
Yo KC! I drafted McGahee and Ricky W. as my two full time running backs (I went a little receiver-happy this year). Please tell me that one of them will have a good year.
KC Joyner (4:36 PM)
I like McGahee to have a really good year (although he is starting things off with a bit of an injury bug). Williams will probably have a very good start but he and Brown will be sharing carries at some point.
Mark (Denver)
Given the additions on defense, Rudi Johnson and the combination of Roy and Calvin, what is your prediction for the Lions this year? Playoff chance?
KC Joyner (4:38 PM)
I'd like their chances more if the NFC East weren't so strong. I think the Wild Card teams will come out of that division so Detroit will have to win their division to make the postseason. As much as I like some of their improvements, they are still behind all three other teams in the division talent wise. I can see a 7-9/8-8 season but not much more in 2008.
Angelo (IL)
Is Orton going to be Chicago's answer this year, or will the defense have to pick up his slack again?
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
It's really early to tell but Orton has looked very good in the preseason, so much so that I've got Chicago as a possible darkhorse division winner.
Joe (phx, az)
Flex position needs to be filled, chris perry or crayton?
KC Joyner (4:41 PM)
Go with Perry. Crayton has that tough matchup I mentioned earlier and is too much of risk because of it.
Mick (Hell's Kitchen)
Who are this season's breakout defensive players?
KC Joyner (4:41 PM)
Jerod Mayo for one. I also like Dwight Lowery to step up for the Jets.
Jeff (OH)
How does Mrs. Scientist feel about all the fantasy drafts you've been having?
KC Joyner (4:43 PM)
She's been a football widow for nearly 20 years now so she's rather used to how things go this time of year!
rally(miami)
how many game do miami win this year?
KC Joyner (4:44 PM)
I'd say somewhere between 5-7.
Al (Baltimore, MD)
Is Marcedes Lewis going to break out this year. Seems like Garrard wants to feed him and the Jags WRs are nothing to write home about.
KC Joyner (4:46 PM)
Al, the issue for Lewis is that the Jags just aren't going to throw the ball that often. If they put up 400-450 passes, 200-250 are going to go to WRs and another 75-100 are going to their RBs. That leaves the TE position with 50-125 passes and Lewis will not get all of those. I could see him getting 75 of those targets, which would leave him just short of the 100 target mark that elite TEs tend to get.
jojo (jojotown)
cmon mr football science man, who do I start Coles or Berrian? A gut feeling just wont do, I need your expertise!
KC Joyner (4:47 PM)
Coles due to his matchup and the injury to Jackson could limit Berrian.
KC Joyner (4:47 PM)
Coles due to his matchup and the injury to Jackson could limit Berrian.
Eric (Sioux City)
Has Willie Anderson's play declined so much that he is thought of solely as a backup?
KC Joyner (4:48 PM)
I had Anderson as only allowing one sack last year, so that would seem to indicate he has some tread left on the tire.
Henry (NYC)
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!! Who has a better week 1, Ricky Williams or Darren McFadden?
KC Joyner (4:49 PM)
I'd probably lean towards Ricky this week.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Im I the only one who thinks Vincent Jackson is going to have a huge year for the chargers ? 6'5, 240 lbs with speed and excellent hands, who can cover him without a double team ?
KC Joyner (4:50 PM)
Rick, I've been on Jackson's case for a while now but his performance late last year and in the playoffs did showcase his skills. Having said that, he did alternate between having really good and really bad games during the stretch run so I want to see him do it on a consistent basis before saying he's a great wideout.
Younger (Los Angeles, CA)
With FFB exploding, I think its great that so many people are becoming football fans but on the flip side its lame to see fans that have no loyalties or ties to teams. Instead they just want to know who is going to score more. Don't you find that kinda annoying?
KC Joyner (4:53 PM)
Younger, what I've found is that most fans try to pull for their NFL team and their fantasy team. They'll put their team's players on their roster and avoid their rival's players. They want to play fantasy football to have a reason to watch other teams and players around the league, so that's the plus side of the equation.
tony
would you trade greg jennings for michael turner
KC Joyner (4:53 PM)
Absolutely not.
Jason (Nashville)
KC, I just want to say that Peyton is my starting QB but nobody roots against the Colts harder than I do.
KC Joyner (4:53 PM)
There you go!
Luis (SB, CA)
Younger - I'm a LOYAL fan to the Cowboys. However, I think Fantasy football allows you to do the Opposite. You actually can become unbiased towards players and their perfomances. Trust me, I rode Westbrook for the past 2 years
KC Joyner (4:54 PM)
Example #2 of this!
tom (hackensack)
so you are high on jennings this year? or down on turner?
KC Joyner (4:55 PM)
I've got to admit an error. I thought the question was the other way around. I'd absolutely trade Jennings for Turner. Jennings is very likely to drop off from last year's numbers.
Younger (Los Angeles, CA)
Agreed (typically the existing football fans)... but minus side of the equation...
KC Joyner (4:55 PM)
I'm with you on the minus side, Younger. I just like to accentuate the positive when possible!
Mike (Toledo)
Allright KC, lets here your prediction......browns or the boys?
KC Joyner (4:56 PM)
Boys. Cleveland's O line hasn't looked very good this preseason and Dallas will test them early and often.
Anthony (NYC)
KC I was wondering could this be the year Ben Watson steps his game up? He's such a talent and could be a Def. Coordinators's nightmare, yet he hasn't put it all together. Why?
KC Joyner (4:58 PM)
Watson had some of his best metrics last year, so he's on the right track. Having said that, he's in an offense that doesn't focus on throwing passes to the tight end so I think that's a lot of why he doesn't reach the elite echelon.
Alex (Pittsburgh, PA)
Speaking of the Cowboys. Do you think they have what it takes to be the top FF D/St this year?
KC Joyner (4:59 PM)
Yes and no. They ranked pretty low in forced bad decision percentage last year but they are a sack waiting to happen. They also have a tough schedule. Add them up and they are probably a top 10 fantasy D.
Eric G (Woodcliff Lake, NJ)
Finally a Pro Bowl for Kerry Rhodes? Or do the bigger names/less productive Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed stay in his way again?
KC Joyner (5:01 PM)
My guess would be Pro Bowl, especially if Favre keeps the team in contention. That would give them 24/7/365 press coverage and that kind of exposure certainly wouldn't hurt Rhodes's chances.
donnie syracuse ny
how much does shockey leaving hurt eli"s numbers if at all i think he was a crybaby who got in elis head and what can i expect from kevin boss in his 2nd year
KC Joyner (5:03 PM)
Shockey was right when he said he wasn't being used enough. He only had 35 flex attempts, which means NY won't miss that part of his game. Boss had great metrics last year and he should be a solid replacement.
Larry (NC)
Any predictions on week 1 upsets?
KC Joyner (5:04 PM)
I could see Houston over Pittsburgh and maybe St. Louis over Philly due to the Eagles injuries.
joe (IL)
What can we expect out of Dustin Keller?
KC Joyner (5:05 PM)
About 50-75 attempts, 30-50 receptions and maybe 5 touchdowns.
Tony (Keizer(oregon))
once again,,,another chat session over, 9 questions in, none answered, typical, why do i even bother
KC Joyner (5:07 PM)
Tony, this one's for you! I didn't see any of your questions, as they come in bunches and many good ones end up getting passed over.
Terrance (Atlanta, GA)
Week 1-Roddy white or DeShawn Jackson?
KC Joyner (5:08 PM)
You'll be glad to know you can play your hometown guy!
Bryan Atlanta, GA
Jamal Lewis hasn't played since AUG 18th with a pulled hammy. No update and I have the option to play Jacobs tonight....Any opinions?
KC Joyner (5:10 PM)
I'm not sure I'd like Lewis against Dallas in any event because of the way the Cleveland O line has been playing. I'd go Jacobs for certain.
Todd (Please Answer My Question Town, USA)
Matt conundrum, Hasselbeck or Schaub this week?
KC Joyner (5:12 PM)
That's a tough one. I've got them ranked as equal on my start/sit sheet but I like Schaub's receivers more than Hasselbeck's (well, at least what Hass has available to him now, assuming Branch is out). Go with Schaub. Well, it's been a fun hour but I've got to split. I hope to see you all on my chat next week at 4 PM to talk some week 1 reviews and week 2 previews!
