Kevin Seifert (2:59 PM)
Ok gang, welcome back. As usual, we'll focus on the NFC North but we're not opposed to chatting about ESPN.com's lastest power rankings or any other league issue that I'm well-enough versed in to give a coherent answer. (Insert joke here.) OK, lets get started.
What would you do at QB if you were coaching the Vikings? Stay put with T.Jack, Go to the bullpen with Gus, or seek a trade for the benched QB in tampa? or any other option as well. Thanks!
Kevin Seifert (3:01 PM)
You're referring to a possible trade for Jeff Garcia. I can't imagine trading for a quarterback during the season would help enough to make it worth their while. The only real option is Frerotte, and I think they need to give it a hard, hard, look. Now is now time for pride to intervene.
Kevin, can you explain to me why you keep placing the blame for the vikings' losses on Tavaris Jackson and not the coaching staff/ play calling?
Kevin Seifert (3:02 PM)
I think I broadened out the blame to the entire offensive system in my post after the Colts game. This is a three-year, institutional issue that extends way beyond Jackson. But that said, a better-performing quarterback could cover up some of this system's faults.
Hey Kevin: If Rodgers continues solid play throughout the season, does Ted Thompson go from the guy who "ran Brett out of town" to the guy who "brilliantly ran Brett out of town" ?
Kevin Seifert (3:04 PM)
Ha. The Packers thought they could win with either quarterback. They had been willing to deal with Favre's indecision while Rodgers developed. But it was their determination that Rodgers was ready in 2008, and thus felt comfortable playing hardball with Favre.
Lost in the pathetic play of Tavaris Jackson has been the equally pathetic play of V. Shiancoe and C Griffin. Do you feel changes need to be made? I can't stand watching Shiancoe drop another TD pass or 3rd down completion!
Kevin Seifert (3:05 PM)
I agree on Shiancoe. There has to be some accountability. How can you look the other players in the eye when you keep trotting out a guy that scuttles scoring opportunities. As for Griffin, I'm not sure the Vikings have a viable replacement.
How do the Packers matchup against the Cowboys?
Kevin Seifert (3:06 PM)
It'll be a fun game. Woodson and/or Harris on Terrell Owens will be classic. Playing at home, I definitely think the Packers can win this game. But it could well be a shootout.
Hey Kevin, is Matt Forte the second best running back in the division?
Kevin Seifert (3:08 PM)
I'm sure I'll get hammered by those of you who think I'm a Vikings homer, but I think Chester Taylor is the second-best runner in the divison. He would start for the other three teams. I would put Forte No. 3 at this point because Ryan Grant isn't himself right now.
Adam (Bozeman, MT)
Its nice having a person devoted the NFC north all year round. Thanks. Anyway. Sure, Jackson has been quite poor. But shouldn't the coaching staff have a little more guts and at least attempt to win games (NOT play not to lose them)? Let him play with something different than run-run-pass!!!!
Kevin Seifert (3:11 PM)
Yes. To me, it's wrong to start a quarterback that you don't trust to run a balanced offense. Either take the shackles off of Jackson or put in someone you do trust to throw something besides a bootleg pass.
Do you see Devin Hester starting on Sunday? Is this a big factor against a terrible Tampa Bay special teams defense?
Kevin Seifert (3:12 PM)
The reports out of Chicago are that Hester has no bone damage. But rib injuries are tough. If you have any sensitivity there, it's hard to run, much less get hit. I wouldn't be surpised if he misses a game.
Zygi Wilf, MN
How did I get duped into hiring Childress over McCarthy? At what point do I hold him accountable for squandering a talent-laden roster?
Kevin Seifert (3:13 PM)
I've always thought Year Three was a key one for Childress, even though he has a five-year contract.
Paul (St. Louis Park, MN)
Kevin- Love the NFCN Blog. Harris and Woodsen seem to have a hard time with big, physical receivers like TO, Burress, Calvin Johnson, etc. What kind of factor do you think this will play on Sunday night?
Kevin Seifert (3:14 PM)
It's a very good point. Harris definitely had a hard time with Burress in the NFC championship game, so maybe the Packers go with Woodson against Owens.
Ben St Paul Mn
Have you ever seen such an inaccurate QB get so much time before being pulled? Its not as if these are young QB mistakes he is making. Either you have an accurate arm or you don't. I'm pretty certain that we all know which of those categories Jackson falls into.
Kevin Seifert (3:16 PM)
Yes, those are the types of fundamentals that should be taken care of by year three of a career.
Ben St Paul Mn
Just wondering if you read Access Vikings at all anymore. Chip is doing a pretty good job in my opinion. Now Judd, thats another story.Joking , Judd's cool too.
Kevin Seifert (3:17 PM)
Access what? :)
Brad Childress, MN
What happens to me when we lose to the Panthers on Sunday?
Kevin Seifert (3:18 PM)
You turn your attention to Tennessee. I don't see anything happening with Childress all season, but the earliest it's even worth talking about is the bye (Oct. 26).
How much longer do you think Jon Kitna will be the starting QB for the Lions
Kevin Seifert (3:20 PM)
Rod Marinelli is very loyal to Kitna, so it'll be very difficult to bench him. In fact, the only way it might happen is if the order comes from on high in the Lions organization. There are some people who would like to see what Drew Stanton can do.
Give us some glimmer of hope that we can turn the Lions around. Please.
Kevin Seifert (3:21 PM)
Well, I don't think it was over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, was it? (Historians: See Animal House.)
Will Kyle Orton remain QB through the entire season?
Kevin Seifert (3:23 PM)
Barring injury, I think so, yes. He's the safer pick for a team that plans to win with defense and special teams.
Should I just forgo the rest of the NFL season because of my Chiefs, or do i have a reason to watch them?
Kevin Seifert (3:24 PM)
This is more a of a baseball thing, but I'm always intrigued by a young team to see who will develop.
Nick (Marshfield, WI)
What will it take for Matt Millen to finally get fired?
Kevin Seifert (3:25 PM)
If he hasn't gotten fired by now, I'm not sure what it would take. I've always assumed he would resign before he got fired.
Erik (Los Angeles)
You really think the Patriots are better then the Packers? I don't think we've seen enough from Cassel to make that claim.
Kevin Seifert (3:27 PM)
It's a team game, first of all, and I was pretty impressed thay they went to New York and out-physicaled the Jets.
Jeff (Janesville, WI)
Kevin, do you think Roy Williams will be a Lion next season?
Kevin Seifert (3:28 PM)
Probably depends on who the coach is. The Lions can keep him by putting the franchise tag on him if they want. If there is a new coach, he could do worse than building around Williams and Calvin Johnson. If it's Rod Marinelli, he might be ready for a fresh start.
Matt (St. Paul)
As Vikes fans, are we panicking a little early? I mean, it's not like we got blown out by two subpar teams. Yes, the offense has stalled out, but I don't see why we can't rebound? Thoughts?
Kevin Seifert (3:30 PM)
The concern is that the Vikings spent the entire offseason trying to improve the passing game and after two games, at least, absolutely nothing has changed. The fact that Childress himself is wavering on Jackson means there's some internal panic going on as well.
Packers WR corp, perhaps the most underrated group in the NFC or even NFL?
Kevin Seifert (3:31 PM)
From a depth perspective, I think they're as good as any group in the NFL. There are some better 1-2 duos, but to have James Jones as your No. 3 receiver and either Ruvell Martin or Jordy Nelson at No. 4 is pretty strong.
Ted Thompson (Green Bay)
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!
Kevin Seifert (3:32 PM)
Robert (Latrobe, PA)
How do you think the Bears' offensive line will hold up through the season?
Kevin Seifert (3:33 PM)
It's definitely a patchwork situation. St. Clair and Beekman were not intended to be starters this season. But so far, the line is doing a solid job for an offense that everyone knows is going to run the majority of the time. The line should be OK.
Randy (St. Paul)
Am I only one who thinks Childress has to be blamed more than T-Jackson? I think the Vikes ran 7 plays the entire Colts game, they just mixed up the order of them. When Jackson is allowed to just make plays, and not worry about being conservative, he is much better
Kevin Seifert (3:36 PM)
Fair points. One of the most common complaints about Childress' offense is that it lacks creativity. But more than anything, it looks like they just don't trust Jackson to do much more than the minimum.
Alex, Lake Minnetonka
Why aren't the vikes using mills or kleinsasser as the main tight end. Jimmy is a better blocker, and they both have better hands. Is it just a matter of the vikes being to stubborn to admit they messed that signing up?
Kevin Seifert (3:36 PM)
They need to use someone besides Shiancoe. Doesn't matter who. You can't maintain credibility by continuing to throw to a player who can't catch.
Jason (Jacksonville, FL)
Simple question, Kevin. What is wrong with the Jags?
Kevin Seifert (3:37 PM)
Offensive line play is key, and right now the Jaguars have too many backups playing. I also think the quarterback has slipped. I've been watching ... they were/are my Super Bowl pick.
Nick (Marshfield, WI)
From a fantasy perspective, who is more valuable: Driver or Jennings?
Kevin Seifert (3:38 PM)
I'm not the smartest fantasy guy around, but Jennings seems to have great chemistry with Aaron Rodgers.
ozzie, ft worth tx
hey kev... in your opinion do you think the vikes are 2-0 with gus at qb?
Kevin Seifert (3:39 PM)
Probably 1-1. They would have beat the Colts for sure.
Alex, Lake Minnetonka
by the way, im blaming you if i do poorly in bio. you always seem to have a chat going on during class
Kevin Seifert (3:40 PM)
I hope you don't plan to be a doctor.
If Herm Edwards season doesn't pan out in KC where's the next logical destination for him. Would either Cleveland with their recent trouble or even Oakland be a possible location for him?
Kevin Seifert (3:41 PM)
How many chances should he get? I wonder if he wouldn't spend a few years in TV first. Very lively personality.
Are you planning on being there for the Vikings-Panthers game this week, or are you going to start reporting on another team?
Kevin Seifert (3:42 PM)
I'll be in Green Bay for the big showdown against Dallas. After that I've got two straight Bears games on the docket.
Jake: (Minneapolis, MN)
The Packers O-line is truly an enigma this year. Looked better against the Vikes and sucked against the Lions. Any chance they can protect Rodgers against the Cowboys' 3-4 and blitzes?
Kevin Seifert (3:44 PM)
They are hoping to get Scott Wells back at center, so that should help. But the Cowboys are a really good pass rushing team and Rodgers can't expect to have a ton of time to move through his read progressions.
Adam (Cincinnati, Oh)
Kevin, in my opinion this division is still up for grabs and GB shouldn't be so content. The Bears and Vikes will make some upsets. What do you think?
Kevin Seifert (3:45 PM)
Right now, the Vikings have to figure out the quarterback thing. But there's no question the Bears have put themselves in an early position to contend. I thought splitting the first two road games was a solid start.
Andy Reid (Philly)
Now that's how you run the WCO, Brad.
Kevin Seifert (3:46 PM)
I've always been amazed at how often the Vikings' offense is compared with Philadelphia's because of the Reid-Childress connection. They're really not that similar. Childress' offense is closer to the one he ran at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez.
Patrick (Ocala, FL)
What can the Packers do to slow down Tony Romo... the guy is throwing at a 70% clip and over 300 yards per game while converting 3rd downs 66% of the time (next closeest is Philly at 50%)?
Kevin Seifert (3:47 PM)
Based on what I saw last night, get a decent rush and them wait for him to make a stupid, unforced error.
Kevin, Do you think the Lions D will improve during the season as all the new additions play together, Dizon takes over middle linebacker, and all the young lineman get some experience? Give us some hope and thanks for the updates...
Kevin Seifert (3:48 PM)
Unless Dizon is a complete dud, which I don't think he is, they've got to get him out there. Paris Lenon shouldn't be a starting middle linebacker.
do you think the eagles are the team to beat.they held their own against a tough cowboys team without their top WR
Kevin Seifert (3:49 PM)
What a strong division, huh? Very little separates Philly, Dallas and the Giants. You could easily see both wild card teams coming from the NFC East.
Waiting for Romo to make a mistake... well last night he made way more good plays then mistake plays... so that is kinda a hope for good luck attitude?
Kevin Seifert (3:49 PM)
A little bit. The Packers are going to have to win in a shootout. They're not going to stuff the Cowboys offense.
Kevin, 1 Bills question ok! Do you Buy/Sell on the Buffalo Bills being a playoff team this season?
Kevin Seifert (3:50 PM)
Buy. I've liked them since preseason.
Any chance Ron Turner doesn't go with the fullback on fourth & one vs. Tampa Bay
Kevin Seifert (3:50 PM)
For his sake, hopefully never again.
Who has the best LB corps in the nfc north?
Kevin Seifert (3:51 PM)
Nice to hear from you. You'd have to go with the Bears ... Briggs and Urlacher ... right?
Dorsey Levins (Green Bay)
Hi Kevin. I really think the Packers have made the same mistake with R Grant that they did with me - WAY WAY overpaid me after exactly one good season, only to never see that production again. Only with Grant, he didn't even have a full season. What do you think?
Kevin Seifert (3:53 PM)
I don't think Grant got a monster deal. The Packers are pretty good about that. I do think the holdout contributed to Grant's hamstring situation, but when healthy he's definitely a starting-caliber running back.
What happens to Desean Jackson when Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis get healthy?
Kevin Seifert (3:54 PM)
You have to imagine that Philly will find a way to keep Jackson on the field because of the way he can stretch the defense ... as long as he agrees to wait until after he crosses the goal line to spike the ball from now on.
Your the Packers coaching staff... you more worried about Witten or T.O. this week?
Kevin Seifert (3:55 PM)
Wow. Probably TO, given the trouble big receivers have given the Packers in recent games.
A whole NFC North chat and no All Day mention? For shame, Kevin. Seriously though doesn't no quaterback play make his 160 yards more impressive, considering the 8 and even 9 man fronts he faced?
Kevin Seifert (3:56 PM)
Agreed. The Colts were in an 8-man front from the opening play.
Mike McCarthy (Green Bay)
How long am I going to have to answer questions about Rodgers vs. Favre?
Kevin Seifert (3:56 PM)
The din is dwindling with every week.
Really? Briggs and Urlacher are THAT much better than Barnett and Hawk? All four of those guys are studs. I think the Pack's LBs fly way under the radar for some reason.
Kevin Seifert (3:57 PM)
They do, but you would have to agree Briggs and Urlacher make more big plays. Ok folks, one or two more ...
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
How do you think Griese will do against his old team Sunday? The Bears can't blow their home opener can they?
Kevin Seifert (3:59 PM)
Naw, I would go Chicago's way in that one. Griese is the Bucs' best quarterback by default. Ok, thanks everyone. Have a great week!
