Pontiac Game Changing Performance
![]() |
Davis will be chatting about the season as well as the Pontiac Game Changing Performances seen during the games.
Rece Davis (3:57 PM)
hi guys. sorry for delay logging in. let's go
Charles (Augusta)
I am just wondering why the Dawg's cannot buy any of the ESPN love that every other top 5 team seems to be getting?
Rece Davis (3:58 PM)
Charles, Charles, Charles, Charles. We showed Knowshon leaping...over and over. I think we all have given the Dawgs love. They'll get plenty of attention since the Alabama-Ga game is the only blockbuster of the week.
Dawgs Rule!
your Tide is going down, Bama Boy!
Rece Davis (4:00 PM)
Thanks for knowing my alma mater. Can't play any favorites. I'm on scholarship with ESPN. Contrary to popular belief, we take objectivity seriously....and Lou is an exception. When they put up a statue to you some place, it's ok to have a little favoritism for them.
Ryan Miller (Waukee, IA)
Hey Rece! Does Kirk Ferentz's "gut feeling" to play Jake Christensen the entire second half even though Stanzi outplayed him in the first half and Christensen's game-loosing fumble cost Ferentz his job this year? Thanks!
Rece Davis (4:01 PM)
I don't think so. Just saw from our blogger that Stanzi is the guy. Kirk is an outstanding coach. They've had a rough run lately, but I think they can make a bowl game. Saturday didn't help them much though...granted.
Jimmy (South Bend, IN)
My hair looked terrible all wet and under a sea of green unis. What do I do?
Rece Davis (4:01 PM)
We went over this last week, Jimmy. Haircut is in order.
baton rouge
is lee and lou a little sheepish after the lsu win?
Rece Davis (4:03 PM)
No, I don't think so. Again, these guys are paid to analyze and predict based on their expertise. Sometimes they're right and sometimes they're wrong. In a close one like that, it's a guess...and Zac Ethridge wasn't too far away from making them right on the TD pass. Game of inches. Both guys obviously think very highly of LSU and rightfully so.
Cullen Waco, texas
Rece, People in waco havent had to much to cheer about for a while here, that is until the Art Briles and robert griffin era....you think Coach Briles can get this program back on the right track again?
Rece Davis (4:04 PM)
Cullen, How much fun is it to watch Griffin? Wow. Briles is an outstanding offensive coach. It's early in his tenure, but I'd say he's brought more optimism to the program than at any time in the post Teaff-Singletary-Abercrombie era.
Dan, CT
Why don't you travle with he GameDay guys. You are the best at ESPN
Rece Davis (4:05 PM)
You're very kind. I really enjoy working with Mark and Lou in the studio...and love my chances to travel to call games and to host the basketball version of Gameday.
ALOHA
Hawaii: bowl game or not
Rece Davis (4:06 PM)
Sorry. Aloha means goodbye to bowl I think. I see a total of 3 more games I think they can't win...that would mean avoiding stumbles in the others. If I had to make a choice, right now I'd say no.
Scott, Boston
The 'Cuse fiiiinally won one. You must have put in some good words to your guy over there. Do you think this means they're turning things around?
Rece Davis (4:07 PM)
Not yet. They even got some uneasy moments in that one. a long, long way to go for Otto's team.
Marcus (daytona beach)
Rece why no love yet for the U
Rece Davis (4:08 PM)
Here's some, Marcus. I know A&M isn't very good, but I was really impressed with their explosive plays. Cooper can fly. Marve is an outstanding young QB I think. Can't wait to see them play this week. They might wind up in that ACC title game yet.
Carrie, Ann Arbor, MI
Hi Rece, I'm a Michigan fan (I know, I know)...advice on how to cope through this season and a good come back line other than..."In 2 years we will be contenders again!?"
Rece Davis (4:09 PM)
Carrie, I don't know if I can help you. How about this comeback...have your fun while you can...because we're still Michigan and you're not.
TY TULSA
A couple of years ago, OU and USC had a massively hyped NC matchup. I would imagine the same if both hold serve during the regular season, what are your thoughts on the OU offense vs. the Usc defense? One for the ages? Your pick?
Rece Davis (4:11 PM)
Great question, Ty. In their NC game I thought AD would run wild vs USC D that had allowed Notre Dame to run on them. Wrong. I should know better than to think anyone can beat USC in a huge game (other than Vince Young) but I really like OU's O and D lines. I'll reserve any judgment until I see how much the loss of Granger impacts Oklahoma. I do think if anyone can beat USC without the Trojans self-destructing, it's the Sooners.
Kevin, Al
Rece I listen to you on the RoundTable every time you are on down here. What do you think about the Burns/Todd QB battle at Auburn.
Rece Davis (4:12 PM)
Seems like the battle is over and Todd won. Thanks for listening. I believe they think Todd gives them the best chance to win. He was pretty solid against a nasty defense Saturday night.
Hot Sauce (Tempe, AZ)
Rece, what happened to my Devs this weekend? I thought we had dem dawgs a couple of times, but we just weren't good enough. What's it going to take to wrestle the PAC 10 from USC? Will it ever happen?
Rece Davis (4:16 PM)
Hot Sauce, there's always a chance. A few years ago a former coach said of USC (when they were losing) "with that recruiting base, they should win the national championship every year." That's a little hyperbolic, (double score word?), but the sentiment is there. They've shared the title the last 2 yrs...but it's fair to point out that's largely because of self-inflicted wounds. It will happen eventually...It just won't last as long as USC keeps its act together. By that I only mean..it won't last as far as keeping USC out of the mix for a long period of time. There's no reason that coaching, recruiting and stability can't allow programs like Az St, Oregon, Cal, UCLA (once Rick gets it going) to reach their level. Look at what's happening in the SEC. Everyone has to be great to compete...no one dominates forever anymore.
Gary, Florida
Why are the Gators not in the NC talk?
Rece Davis (4:16 PM)
Gary, I think they are. If not, win your games and you will be.
Betty (Bloomington)
How do you think the Hoosiers will play this year?
Rece Davis (4:18 PM)
Betty, They're off to a so-so start. I think they have some solid components to make a run at a bowl game. Let's all continue to send Ball State's Dante Love our best. Great player. I'm thankful his injuries weren't worse.
Red raiders
When will Texas Twch get its first lost if any
Rece Davis (4:19 PM)
Texas or OU. Is that a cop out answer? Leach is one of my favorites. If you haven't seen his "first date" advice on the internet...look it up. Hysterical.
Marcus
Can I see some hurricane highligts on College Football Final this Saturday since none this past week
Rece Davis (4:20 PM)
Good chance, Marcus. I'm afraid a couple of discussions went a little long and cost the Canes their spot. We really appreciate you watching the show. Canes are going to push their way into the show on a regular basis I think.
John (New York)
Rece, Tennessee is so doomed.. is there anything that can help these poor souls? Fulmer seems to be taking the blame, but is he at fault for all of those blunders the players are on the field for?
Rece Davis (4:22 PM)
John, he might not be at fault, but he's responsible. That's part of the deal for being a head coach. New OC Dave Clawson is taking a lot of heat. Crompton hasn't played at a consistent level yet. But you're right about this...players carry responsibility too. It's not Fulmer's thought when the FB and QB bump and botch a hand off to RB on the 3 yd line.
Mike, Bham
Will a undefeated Big 12 team like OU or Mizzou get to Miami over a undefeated SEC team like Georgia or Florida like in 04?
Rece Davis (4:26 PM)
Great question Mike. I think the dynamics are different than 04. Auburn was hurt by non-conference that was particularly weak. Not that the Tigers didn't deserve to be there, but there had to be some way to separate the 3 teams. Same this year. The SEC teams likely involved will have out of this world schedules...largely based on conf games. Ga or Fla would boast a healthy non-conf schedule. Oklahoma is going to be helped by TCU this weekend...and if Texas and TT keep winning...that would aid them..and potentially Missouri. The odd thing..on paper, USC should be left out. But the human component...the eye test by poll voters will likely aid the Trojans greatly and make them immune from being the odd team out. That said, it's hard for me to believe any SEC team will make it all the way through without being nicked. Remember, LSU lost twice last yr to avg SEC teams.
Marcus
I thought it was ridiculous that FSU was in the top 25 last week how do you feel about that rece
Rece Davis (4:26 PM)
Their performance vs Wake proved you correct.
Dave (New Brunswick, NJ)
With Rutgers at 0-3, do you think that Schiano is kicking himself for not taking that Miami job a couple years back?
Rece Davis (4:27 PM)
Better still...for changing his mind about Michigan. I don't think Greg has any regrets...he's a really good coach, but I'm sure he's been stunned by the way they've played so far. They'll be fine.
Amber (Boston)
Hi Rece, I noticed Vanderbilt got into the top 25 this week. Do you think the SEC is over-rated?
Rece Davis (4:30 PM)
Amber, I don't think so...but I don't think it is invincible the way others feel it is portrayed at times. Vanderbilt has earned the right to be ranked...relative to others who are filling out the bottom of the poll. Are they elite? No. Could they lose to mid-level teams in other leagues? Of course. Overall, what sets the SEC apart...depth of good teams is greater than most other leagues. There are probably more national title contenders at the top.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Who has the best defense in the SEC?
Rece Davis (4:33 PM)
Brad, there are a lot of good ones. It depends on match ups. LSU's DL is the best I think...although Alabama's is very good. Georgia's LBs are outstanding. Florida's too. Gators and Auburn have stunning speed on D. I don't think you can pick one at this point and say it's the best. Vandy has looked pretty salty too...and Lou told us early he thinks South Carolina's could be the best.
Mikey P Rockport TX
Rece, I just saw someone asking about that Robert Griffin boy from Baylor. He looks like he is the real deal, where do u think he will rank among qb's in the big 12 in the future? possible heisman candiate somewhere down the road? Thanks!
Rece Davis (4:33 PM)
MIkey, Let's give him a little time for that. Right now I just want to watch him play and grow. He's electric.
Steven (Burlington)
Does Bama have a chance between the hedges? No pressure on them ?
Rece Davis (4:35 PM)
No question Georgia is and should be the favorite. They've got a pro QB, big time RB and WR...but Alabama is a good team..a lot of young talent. Anybody that shows up has a chance...and I think the Tide has a chance.
Charles (Augusta)
Is the Dawg's denfense as good vs the run as it appears or have we not been challenged yet?
Rece Davis (4:37 PM)
Very, very good. Certainly Alabama will provide a tougher test than UGA has seen on the ground. But I suspect Alabama will have to prove it can pass to keep the Dogs from loading up the box. Alabama's OL seems to have been better run blocking than pass blocking. John Parker Wilson is solid, but can be a little inaccurate. That has hampered them at times in the passing game. If alabama can't throw effectively, stopping the run will be that much easier for the Dogs.
Tony (Tallahassee)
It's now been several years since Florida State was a serious contender for a National Title and things do not appear to be improving. FSU simply lacks the game changers on the Offensive End? Is it just bad recruiting and who is to blame? Bowden? Jimbo Fisher? I can't see this current coaching staff turning this around we need to blow the whole thing up.
Rece Davis (4:39 PM)
Tony, their performance Saturday night was very disappointing. I don't see playmakers. I thought the OL would be much improved in its second year under these offensive coaches. It's a bit of a mystery why they haven't been able to generate any offense against good teams the last couple of years. It does seem to be a little stale there. But Bobby Bowden built that place. He should stay as long as he wants.
Brad, Ga
Who are you Heisman front runners so far Rece?
Rece Davis (4:40 PM)
Brad, at the moment I have Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin, Sam Bradford, Knowshon Moreno and Javon Ringer in my top 5.
Josh (NY, NY)
That LSU/Auburn game was one of the best of the season so far. Considering how LSU came back in this game, do you think Les Miles gets the recognition he deserves as one of the elite coaches in the country?
Rece Davis (4:42 PM)
I don't think Les gets the credit he deserves. We joke and call him the Mad Hatter, but the guy has guts...or something else. His kids believe in him and play hard for him. His record vs top 10 teams is remarkable. It's true. He deserves all the props he can get. I love his sense of humor...both intended and unintended. He's even brilliant in that SportsCenter ad. Have a Grrrreat Day!!
Jarrett (East Lansing, MI)
Do you think that Javon Ringer can handle this tough workload for the rest of the season? If he does, will he get some heisman love?
Rece Davis (4:43 PM)
I've got him in the top 5. He's tough, but they are asking a ton of him in terms of touches. He's getting it nearly 50% of the time. That team reflects its coach. Tough. Hard-nosed. I was really impressed by how physical they were vs ND. Ringer is one of my favorite guys to watch. Taking his blockers with him to the news conference. That was great.
David (NY)
Is it just me or are there less marquee games in the non-conference schedule this year? It seems like for a few weeks in a row there's been only 1 or 2 top tier game. I guess its hard because you dont know who will be good when you make up the schedule.
Rece Davis (4:46 PM)
David, you're not the only one. No question...disappointing teams sometimes spoil marquee matchups. For instance, Miami/Texas A&M looked great when they scheduled it a few yrs ago. But there's no question some teams have dodged tougher non-conference games. Some do it to avoid potential losses...I think a more prevalent reason is to get another home game...and the revenue that goes with it.
Scott (Rochester)
Rece when are you coming back to host College Football Live?
Rece Davis (4:46 PM)
I'll be there tomorrow, Scott. Thanks for asking.
Kristin (New York)
Do you think Knowshon Moreno is just trying to fly through the air every week? Think he'll leave Georgia early?
Rece Davis (4:47 PM)
When he does, Mark Richt sure does want us to put it on TV. You know, Chase Coffman at Mizzou is pretty good at leaping too. I hope Knowshon stays...but anytime a RB leaves, I don't blame them. The shelf life is so short for RBs...I understand getting it while you can.
Tyler (Bowling Green)
Rece, Do you think Vanderbilt can bring home a winning season and go to a bowl game this year?
Rece Davis (4:48 PM)
This is the year, Tyler. They'll do it for Whit Taylor...and I'm drawing a blank on his WR name from the '82 Bowl team. They played Air Force in Birmingham I think. All-American Bowl. They'll be back this year.
Gedney (New York)
How far can Juice Williams take the illini this year? I am soooo sooo sooo wanting to know.
Rece Davis (4:48 PM)
All the way State College this weekend. He might find the sledding a little tough there.
John (London)
Hey Rece, I'm stuck over here in London for the past 3 weeks and no real access to College Football. What's the big scoop. I'm here for another week, but what should I look for when i get back next week.
Rece Davis (4:50 PM)
In a nutshell, John. USC is really, really good. Ohio State has changed QBs. The SEC is loaded...5 in the top 10 last week. 4 this week..probably 3 by the time you get home a they beat up on each other. BCS busters are a story. Boise State is one of them...though BYU looks the strongest so far. Paterno has passed Bowden on the wins list...and might have a nice cushion on him by the end of the season. I think that's close to getting you up to speed.
Huntsville
Should LSU be rank 1, they are the defending NC
Rece Davis (4:52 PM)
Not for that reason. I totally disagree with that train of thought. LSU has a different QB and lost it's defensive leader in Glenn Dorsey. Even so, LSU merits consideration for #1...but not because of anything that happened last year.
Mike G (Ithaca)
Speaking of no love, the Ivy League gets no love from ESPN. Why not love us? We have more than crew teams!!
Rece Davis (4:53 PM)
True, Mike. Gotta have a big finish from the Ivys to have a nominee for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance. Somebody keep the tape rolling out there.
Jack (Chicago)
Who is your current favorite in the Big Ten? I think we're terribly weak this year.
Rece Davis (4:54 PM)
Pre-season, I said Ohio State. I tend to still lean that way. But Penn State seems to have its act together a little bit better right now. They haven't really been tested yet. Wisconsin is the team that has passed the toughest test. We'll see in the next couple of weeks if Penn State rips the mantle of favorite from the Buckeyes.
chicago
what are the chances that syracuse will let go of head coach mid-season?
Rece Davis (4:55 PM)
Unfortunately, I'd say pretty high at this rate. They've really struggled and thus far, there hasn't been a lot of reason for optimism. There's still along way to go...but Robinson is definitely under some serious heat.
Kretuna Burger (Seattle)
What is happening with the UW Huskies this year?
Rece Davis (4:57 PM)
They just don't seem to have the same level of athletes that elite teams do. Locker is an obvious exception and there are others, I'm sure. They just look a little slow to me.
Marc (Manalapan, NJ)
Who do you think is the most inspiring player to watch this year so far? Knowshon? Tebow?
Rece Davis (4:58 PM)
tough to get more inspiring than Chase Daniel if you're looking at excellence. If you're looking at toughness, Javon Ringer is tops right now to me...at least on offense. But the guys you mentioned certainly are deserving and inspirational.
Frank
Hey Rece, Did you play ball growing up, in high school or at bama? Frank (LA, CA)
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
My talent ran out when my HS eligibility did. My coaches and teammates would probably tell you my talent ran out long before that, but I played anyway.
James (Columbus, OH)
Hey Rece, Who's a bigger celeb in Columbus... Herbstreit or Eddie George? I say Herbie!
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
Herbie doesn't have a restaurant...but might have better hair.
Tim Taylor State college
is psu for real
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
I think so, Tim.
Jeff (Columbus)
Who is the biggest disappointment in a College Football QB going pro? Think Tebow will be able to make it in the NFL after being so praised in college?
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
Jeff, if I understand your question...my answer is Ryan Leaf in recent times. I do think Tebow will silence those who don't believe he'll make it in the pros. I wouldn't say that kid would fail at anything.
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
Ok guys...last one.
Nathan (Haleyville)
Rece, The Razorback Wrap-up show said: "Alabama was not a GREAT team... they are a GOOD team, a top 25 team but, NOT a top 10 team". They justified their position pointing out how Arkansas moved the ball thru the air and, if you take away the 2 TD pics and key penalties, it would have been a much closer game and the Hogs may have even won! What do you think? Are they serving sour grapes with their BBQ or is there merit in what they're saying?
Rece Davis (5:05 PM)
You can put lipstick...oh, let's not go there. Some of both. Alabama's coaches would contend they blew some assignments. Truth is in the middle. Right now, Alabama is a top 10 team. But I don't think they are yet at the level of the top 5 or 6. Great thing about sports...you can prove or disprove yourself on the field. We'll learn more about Alabama when we see how well they hang in against a bona fide national championship contender this weekend. I think the show is right in that blowing out Arkansas this year doesn't prove much. That's going to happen a few more times over the next month or so. The old..."if not for" game can be played by any team any week.
Matt (Long Island)
Have you seen the movie "The Express" about Ernie Davis? What do you think?
Rece Davis (5:06 PM)
Not yet, Matt, but I"m very eager to get to the theatre to see it. I've heard good things. Thanks for the time everybody. Don't forget to vote for the Pontiac Gamechanging performance of the week. Great questions. See you next Monday...same time...same site.
