Buzzmaster (12:06 PM)
Dan Rafael will be here to answer all your boxing questions tonight around midnight ET. Send your questions in now!
Dan Rafael (11:36 PM)
Hey Freaks, the main event -- Gamboa-Ramirez is about to start. Be back here when the fight is over. Enjoy!
Dan Rafael (11:55 PM)
Greetings, Freaks! Good night of fights. Let's get to it!
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan the Freaks are ready...bring on RAD!!!!!
Dan Rafael (11:56 PM)
Good!
Tomas(Texas)
Gamboa's MO? Get dropped at least once during a fight
Dan Rafael (11:57 PM)
That's what it seems. But in fairness, although he did get hit and was open he did take a rough elbow from Ramirez.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
Wow, Sergio Martinez was impressive.
Dan Rafael (11:58 PM)
I thought Martinez was absoltely sensational. I have had him ranked in the top 10 for ages. But I had seen him fight several times (including a tape of the loss to Margarito) and I have NEVER seen him look like that.
Ruben Guzman (mexicali)
The Love child seems a lot smarter now uh? I dont think he could have handled martinez tonight
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I don't disagree based on that peformance. But Julio is a much better puncher and quicker than Bunema and I think he would have done better against Martinez than Bunema did.
Tomas(Texas)
martinez vs Kirkland. Its on!!
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
No it's not. At this point, it's not even a fair fight. Martinez way more skilled.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Take your pick D-Nice: Sergio Martinez v. (a) Margarito, (b) P-Will, (c)Vernon Forrest
Dan Rafael (12:01 AM)
All great options. NO WAY Vernon fights him, so I suspsect he will eventually give up his belt. I spoke to Lou DiBella, Martinez's promoter during and after the fight and he was very excited and open to anything big. The Williams fight is very interesting to me. Margartito rematch would be good too but that won't happen for the time being with his schedule mapped out for the first half of '09.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
Did you watch Kimbo Slice lose tonight?
Dan Rafael (12:01 AM)
No, but I did DVR it and heard he got scorched in 14 seconds. All hype and zero substance. Goodbye Elite XC.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Triple H or Jeff Hardy tommorow night?
Dan Rafael (12:01 AM)
My heart is with Hardy, head is with the King of Kings.
Luis, (Puerto Rico)
Dan what are your thoughts on the figueroa vs Juama fight?
Dan Rafael (12:02 AM)
I was watching that too and I thought Lopez looked spectacular in his first-round knockout. I expected him to win by KO but not in a minute. He's a star and would love to see him with the bigger names at 122 or 126.
Joe (NYC)
Maybe my thoughts on this were influenced by the commentary, but I think it was nothing short of criminal for the ref/doctor/corner to let Tsurkan go out for the 10th.
Dan Rafael (12:03 AM)
I thought it should have been stopped around the eighth. He had no prayer. Just a showed heart and nothing else. Good win for Angulo, who you have to love.
Gamalier (Puerto Rico)
I know Juanma needs some rounds, but I think he is ready for Vazquez right now
Dan Rafael (12:03 AM)
I agree.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
Do they networks have any influence on which referees are chosen for their cards?
Dan Rafael (12:04 AM)
None whatsoever. That is up to the local commission. Period.
Brooks (Cleveland)
Hey Dan - only my opinion, but I think Gamboa will get KTFO if he steps up. Apparently he doesn't believe in using any defense. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:05 AM)
I think Gamboa needs a lot more seasoning as a professional. I agree. He fights a solid guy and he'll get smoked because he has no defense at all and is too off balance. He's a spectacular offensive talent but that is not enough to be great especially when it's obvious that he doesn't take the best shot either.
Luis, (Puerto Rico)
Who do you think would be the next inline for him?.. THere is a lot of talk of him appering in the De la hoya vs pacquiao fight.
Dan Rafael (12:06 AM)
Juanma is likely to be on the Dec. 6 undercard. Bob Arum told me last week that if he won tonight and came out OK he would be on the show. Well, he won and came out fine, so I expect him on Dec. 6.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan,Agree or disagree with Lampley stating Martinez's handspeed is as quick as a prime Shane Mosley.
Dan Rafael (12:06 AM)
Disagree.
John (ATL GA)
What do you think of Abrahams pull-out? legit or questionable?
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
I spoke to Leon Margules, Marquez's promoter, in Germany today before I wrote the story about him pulling out. Leon said he saw him at the morning weight check and he was in bad shape and that it was a totally legit withdrawl.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Speaking of Juan Ma where do you think he will evenutally end up? Will he move up to 130?
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
One division at a time. He has work to do at 122 but eventually he'll be a 130 or even 135.
Lennox Lewis
I definitely think Gamboa needs more seasoning before making the next step, Absolutely!
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan who would you like in a Santos-Martinez matchup?
Dan Rafael (12:08 AM)
Interesting fight although the fact that they are both southpaws gives me pause (same with Williams). But I think based on Martinez's activity level and positive energy, he might be a favorite over Santos.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
I thought the fight of the weekend was the Coleman vs. De la Rosa fight last night on ShoBox. That was a close, hard fought, competitive fight. The only problem with HBO was the fights were one sided.
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
The ShoBox main event was a good fight last night. As for the HBO bouts being onesided that happens. Going in, I think everyone thought Martinez-Bunema would be highly competitive and that so would Angulo-Tsurkan.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
Dan, Vitali hasn't suffered from a bruised eye lash yet?
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
Not that I know of.
Larry, New York City
Can we ban Tony Crebs?
Dan Rafael (12:10 AM)
Terrible referee job tonight by Crebs in the Angulo-Tsurkan fight. It was like he was frozen to stop the fight.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Lets not overreact to Martinez. Bunema threw about 10 total punches and the few rights he did throw hit Martinez.
Dan Rafael (12:10 AM)
One of the reasons he threw so little was because he kept getting hit back when he did.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
Everyone knows Cuba has a stacked amateur team. But when Gamboa was on it was he the standout?
Dan Rafael (12:11 AM)
Yes, he was one of the top guys and went on for a gold medal.
Jerry Cantu (Temecula, CA)
seven...eight...ni-ten! Sorry Marcos, I've got dinner reservations.
Dan Rafael (12:11 AM)
It was a bit of a quick count at the end, but Ramirez was done.
Freddie (Queens, NY)
Gamboa seems to be an offensive juggernaught but not much else... does he remind you of any fighters past or present?
Dan Rafael (12:12 AM)
I thought the comparrison Max made to Hamed was a good one, although at least Hamed won a bunch of titles, fought top guys and dominated for several years. Gamboa is a long way from that level yet.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
I agree with Joe. That was an AWFUL job by all parties involved. Tsurkan could have been seriously seriously hurt
Alex - new jersey
Dan,What do you think gamboa needs to work on besides keeping his hands up
Dan Rafael (12:13 AM)
His feet are a mess. I am no trainer but even I can tell he is too often off balance.
walter (killeen tx)
Wch one of the winners was the most impressive tonight?
Dan Rafael (12:13 AM)
Martinez for sure.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan I know he looked good but I am not buying into Martinez just yet. I dont think Bunema has thrown a punch yet. FOrrest, Santos and Williams would all starch him.
Dan Rafael (12:14 AM)
You're on drugs. Starch him? Go back to your bottle.
Joe (NYC)
Did DiBella know exactly what he had in Martinez, or was he as shocked as everyone else seemed to be?
Dan Rafael (12:14 AM)
To Lou's credit, he has bragged about Sergio for quite awhile. He has always felt he had a ton of talent and just needed a chance on a big stage.
Eric(Florida)
Sergio Martinez looked very impressive and this was my first time seeing him. Why hasn't he had much TV exposure?
Dan Rafael (12:15 AM)
He's kind of fallen through the cracks, fought a lot of his fights overseas and only recently come to the US and gotten a US promoter.
Berndawg
How soon do you think we'll see Alvarado back in the ring and who would you like to see him fight?
Dan Rafael (12:16 AM)
I thought Alvarado looked great last night on Telefutura knocking out Garnica. I think we'll probably see him once more before the end of the year back on Telefutura. I dont have anyone particular in mind.
mark(NY)
All the death talk by the commentators wasn't all that off base. Tsurkan was taking a hellacious beating.
Dan Rafael (12:16 AM)
It was brutal but it was uncomfortable to hear them talk that way. But I didn't disagree.
John (ATL GA)
The people in Salisbury sure love boxing. How about that ShoBox crowd last night! Its good to see local fighters getting local support.
Dan Rafael (12:17 AM)
I spoke to Steve Farhook today and he told me it was the loudest crowd he's heard other than Manchester for a Ricky Hatton fight. Great fans up there.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
Buy/sell: Martinez's next fight will be on HBO.
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
I would hope it would be either on HBO or Showtime or on a big ppv undercard.
John (ATL GA)
do you think at this point Forest would fight Martinez?
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
No. I would bet anything Forrest never fights him.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Danno, While Sergio Martinez looked terrific, he is still not in Margarito's class right now. Margarito has better skill and a granite chin and I think he would still wear down Martinez and stop him in the later rounds.
Dan Rafael (12:19 AM)
Did I say he was? Personally, I think Margarito would beat him again too but I think it would be competitive. But it is also pointless because the fight is not on the table in the near future anyway.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
I know its a ways off, but any rumblings for the FNF season premiere?
Dan Rafael (12:20 AM)
No set fights yet, but the premier is Jan. 2.
corey(from WestWick)
Six more days will Vitali make it?
Dan Rafael (12:20 AM)
It looks that way but you NEVER know.
Johnny
Dano, I love you man! How much of an advantage is it for a fighter to get high class sparring, like Angulo sparring Margarito?
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
Top level sparring is crucial to the development of young fighters I think. For Angulo to get work like that is invaluable.
Tomas(Texas)
Where does Gamboa go from here? Still too soon to take on someone in the top 10?
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
His handlers need to move him very, very carefully. Put it that way.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Lou DiBella should do everything is his power to put Martinez on the Duddy-Hearns TV undercard, whichever network it lands on.
Dan Rafael (12:22 AM)
I love the idea but it is unlikely because the undercard is supposed to be Kid Chocolate Peter Quillin vs. James McGirt Jr.
Zsolt Erdei
Will I ever fight anyone meaningful?
Dan Rafael (12:22 AM)
I have no idea, but if you do, drop me a note or hit the Bat Phone.
Frankie
All this talk from Roach saying De La Hoya cant pull the trigger anymore is all just bitterness from Roach IMO because DLH got rid of him. He only trained him for ONE fight.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga)
D$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Seeing Angulo fight makes me seriously want to see Angulo vs Kirkland!
Dan Rafael (12:23 AM)
Same here, but I think at this point Angulo would be a bit too much for him.
Joe (NYC)
Will Gary Shaw try and put together a third one of these cards down the road? Tonight's wasn't as good as the last one, but I still enjoyed it.
Dan Rafael (12:24 AM)
I'm sure Gary would love to. Hopefully HBO will be receptive. There are plenty of interesting fights for those guys too.
Ruben Guzman (mexicali)
Did you notice the referee in the Angulo fight got hit in the face by el Perro? He deserved that for not stopping it quicker
Dan Rafael (12:24 AM)
I did see it and I agree. I laughed when I saw that because I was thinking the same thing.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Maybe Teddy Atlas did it once or twice but have you ever heard an announcer yell for a fighter to go down like Lampley did tonight?
Dan Rafael (12:25 AM)
Jim was very vocal about it tonight and I can't say I blame him. We've both been ringside for fights where guys have died and it's just terrible. Nobody wants to see that and this one was obvious that it should have been stopped.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Danaconda! An interesting piece about boxing in ESPN's special report section about sports and the weak economy. Do you see promoters putting more or less fights on PPV in 2009 if the economy continues to stumble?
Dan Rafael (12:26 AM)
Promoters will do whatever it takes to squueze out every penny they can, so no, I don't see the PPV scene changing.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Fair to say BAD is starting to make the right types of fights? Tonight, followed by the likely Williams-Rodriguez, and then probably Duddy-Hearns. Seems to be on the right track.
Dan Rafael (12:26 AM)
I couldn't agree more. HBO is getting its mojo back on BAD with these kinds of cards.
Joe (NYC)
Is Gamboa done for 2008?
Dan Rafael (12:26 AM)
Probably.
corey(from WestWick)
Anybody else think Angulo reminds you of Margarito
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
They look alike, they fight alike and they have trained together.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan, suddenly 154 is becoming a pretty hot division...kinda came back from the dead
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
Dead at the top but exciting down below.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
I think Duddy would get smoked by Hearns....am I off track here Big Guy?
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
I don't know about smoked. Duddy has faced better competition and is more experienced. I think it's a tough fight.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga)
How about Martinez vs Mora and Berto vs Callazo on HBO BAD?
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
That's a good call. Martinez-Mora would be interesting and so is Berto-Collazo. And the good thing is I don't think a show like that would be overly costly either.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Somehow I foresee Gamboa taking on Oscar Larios for the WBC featherweight title in the near future... Hopefully Larios doesn't get hurt too badly.
Dan Rafael (12:29 AM)
I could see that, unfortunately.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
Joe from Pensacola is spot on....that division was as moribund as it gets, and now its beyond-intriguing....
Johann (bristol, ct)
I don't know why Dan. I just don't like Gamboa...he reminds me too much of Prince Naseem when he fights...he's talented, fast, powerful....but he has way too many flaws in his defense and it seems like he's so cocky that it won't be easy to convince him to keep his hands up.
Dan Rafael (12:29 AM)
Isn't that what I've been saying?
Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)
RAD ROCKS!!!What kind of access does the press have to referees and even judges after a fight? Have you ever been able to get answers from them after a controversial call?.....and if so did they change your opinion of what happened?
Dan Rafael (12:30 AM)
It's not too common, but sometimes. A lot of the referees in Vegas are great with the press and since I know a lot of them, it's easy to call them over after a fight and they're usually fine with answering questions about the stoppage and such. Judges are a different ballgame.
walter killeen tx
do you think in 2009 we will see Juanma Lopez in a unification fight?Where is he on your P4P after tonight?
Dan Rafael (12:32 AM)
I think Lopez is a huge talent but I am not ready to place him in the p4p list just yet. The win tonight was wholly expected even if not via KO1. He needs to win a more meaningful fight. But he has plenty of time and I do believe strongly that we will see him in the p4p rankings before too long.
Dan NY NY
Is there a better action fight right than a potential Kirkland/Anguolo match up?
Dan Rafael (12:32 AM)
Sensational fight but I don't see it happening. Not nearly big enough yet for either guy to take the risk.
Kimbo Slice
Man I know how Ramirez feels
Dan Rafael (12:33 AM)
At least he lasted longer than 14 seconds.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Any idea when tickets go on sale for USS-Adamek? My office is across the street from the Pru. Can't beat it.
Dan Rafael (12:34 AM)
From the press release I received the other day: Tickets priced at $303, $153, $78, $53, $38 go on sale on Monday at 11 a.m. and can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 201-507-8900.
Charles (Philly)
Does Raul Marquez miss out on his payday just like Nate Campbell did? Will the fight be re-scheduled?
Dan Rafael (12:35 AM)
Nobody gets paid today because the fights didn't happen. However, this fight is already rescheduled for Nov. 8.
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
Hey Fernando from Rhode Island -- you're a jerk.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Juanma's right hook is a thing of beauty... I think it could be my favorite punch in boxing right now.
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
It's certainly up there. He basically did the same thing to Ponce De Leon.
Larry (Houston, TX)
Gamboa and Kirkland are my 2 favorite prospects. They both have flaws but they come to fight with bad intentions. Love them.
Mike Worcester, MA
Dan.Why the heck would a referee, doctor and corner let someone take a beating like Tsurkan did. I was watching the fight with some friends, and we almost had to turn the fight off after the eighth. I thought Lampley was at his best there, yelling for someone to stop the fight.
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Terrible job all the way around for the officials.
Freddie (Queens, NY)
The Berto uppercut is a thing of beauty as well.
Ben (Minneapolis, MN)
Any thoughts on Nate Campbell's bankruptcy recently?
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
Just a shame. Having a title is great, but you can't bring it to the store and pay for food with it. Nate's a good guy and I hope things work out for him.
Banishment
I love me some Fernando
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
Fernando is banned. Wash him down with some beer.
Ruben Guzman (mexicali)
Can't you post Fernando's comment? Your answer is so intriguing....
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
This is a family Web site and I won't give that putz the satisfaction.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan I remember in the Nate Campbell-Ricky Quilles fight on ESPN2 Teddy Atlas was standing up screaming at the ref to stop the fight. He went one step further than Lampley.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
Rank these as action fights: Abraham-Pavlik, Angulo-Kirkland or Juan Diaz-Pac Man?
Dan Rafael (12:41 AM)
All great fights but how about this order: Diaz-Pacman, Angulo-Kirkland, Pavlik-Abraham. All great no matter what order you select.
Peter Manfredo
Fernando, you're a disgrace to our state.
Charles (Philly)
Did Martinez see this as his big chance to get noticed on U.S. TV? Someone really put a rocket up his butt....
Dan Rafael (12:42 AM)
Obviously, fighting for the first time on HBO you want to make a good impression. He was also fighting for an interim world title. That is not a big deal to us but for the fighter it meant a great deal.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
Joe from Pensa-co!!! Can you be more spot on my man??? Atlas was insane that fight, he almost stopped it himself....
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
Whoever the ring announcer was last night for ShoBox, he was spectacular. How do you announce the wrong winner? I mean he paused for 15 seconds before even saying the name and he still got it wrong....
Dan Rafael (12:43 AM)
That was a pretty bad mistake, but mistakes happen. He corrected quickly at least.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
I know F**** has actually corrected a comment made by the HBO commentators in the middle of a fight. Does this mean the referee is able to hear what the commentators are saying about him at least some of the time?
Dan Rafael (12:44 AM)
Defintely, they can when it's not a wild kind of atmosphere.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Dan, as a long time Freak, I can't tell you how cool it is for you to spend late night with us. Thank you.
Dan Rafael (12:45 AM)
Thanks. I have fun doing it with the exceptions of morons like F******* from P********* R.*.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Dan, which rematch do you think think it more likely to happen to happen in 2009: Pacquiao/Marquez, Cotto/Margarito, or Vazquez/Marquez?
Dan Rafael (12:46 AM)
Obviously, Margarito-Cotto because it's already in the works.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
I appreciate the Freak love Jamerson...D-Nice are you stayin at the Palms next week, or do you still stay at MGM or Mandalay? Palms is sweet...
Dan Rafael (12:47 AM)
I'll be at The Palms. I generally stay where the fight is. I have been to the Palms for a fight and press conference, but never stayed there, so I'm looking forward to it.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
What would you think about a Cotto/Quartey match for Cotto's comeback fight?
Dan Rafael (12:49 AM)
Dangerous and extraordinarily unlikely.
F**** M******** (Las Vegas)
I will come out of retirement to fight F****** from R**** I*****!
Chief M......EYA Clw Florida
Mr. R.,Given all the great matchup possibilities with up-n-coming fighters and even some of the old pro's is there a place (either printed or website) where a fan can check out a fighter's record?
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
The official record keeper is Fight Fax, which produces a terrific book every year. But the best reference guide at your fingertips on the Web is boxrec.com, which has a gazillion records. There are many mistakes in those records but overall it's a great resource.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
You have to love the freaking WBA! They just made Anotnio Margarito their super champion at their convention for no apaprent reason and just appointed a new "Regular" Champion. I swear that organization has more titleholders than George Foreman had cheeseburgers when he used to train for fights.
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
A total disgrace.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Pretty random here Dan...popped Holyfield-Bert Cooper into the DVD player last night (first fight I ever went to live, I was 8)...gave me goosebumps...great fight
Dan Rafael (12:53 AM)
Sensational fight. I remember it well. I was a college senior and watched it with one of my buddies at my apartment. Tremendous action fight and Holyfield was in big, big, big trouble but Cooper could not close the deal.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Yes or No, Will Pavlik be the first to stop B-Hop?
Dan Rafael (12:54 AM)
No.
Charles (Philly)
Let's be honest: Providence is a dump, anyway.
Tony (Miami)
Dan, Mosley/Quartey is a good idea. Any chance of it happening?
Dan Rafael (12:55 AM)
I have no idea. Just something I was thinking about, which is why it wound up as a random thought in my blog.
Matt H (phx,az)
Can we end this flippin' Kimbo Slice hype!? He was annihilated in 14 seconds, and I agreed with you that Vlad would have killed him. Dan...THE man!!
Dan Rafael (12:56 AM)
LOL! I don't typically discuss MMA in these chats but I did say ages ago that Wlad would DESTROY Ferguson in any form of combat ages ago. I think I've pretty much been proven right by a 14-second knockout against a nobody.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Currently watching Injin Chi's war with Michael Brodie. Any news on Chi? Did he retire?
Dan Rafael (12:57 AM)
Wow, sensational fight. Chi is retired.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
Yes, I realize I'm fixated on Hagler in my questions tonight.....but do you think he could stop B-Hop?
Dan Rafael (12:57 AM)
No. Give the Hagler questions a rest please.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
If you had to give a grade to Gamboa's chin, what would it be?
Dan Rafael (12:57 AM)
C-
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
Do you think Gamboa's mistakes are correctable? He's not that young and he's had a lot of fights in his life, he could just be an eternally flawed fighter.
Dan Rafael (12:58 AM)
He had hundreds of amateur fights and is 26. Getting him to dramatically change at this point is unlikely.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Dan: Rey Bautista is ranked number 1 by the WBO. Is JuanMa-Boom Boom a possibility for the DLH-Pac undercard? Rey being from the PHI would also appear to help.
Dan Rafael (12:59 AM)
I suppose that is possible but I think JML would destroy Bautista. As for it helping the card because he's from the Philippines that makes zero difference because Pacquiao is also and everyone there will already be watching the fight.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Follow up question, Dan. If you had to give a grade to Amir Khan's chin, what would that be?
Dan Rafael (12:59 AM)
D
john (tampa,fl)
whats next for nate campbell after filing for bankruptcy?
Dan Rafael (1:00 AM)
Nate is free to talk to all promoters, which he will do ASAP. I would expect him to get a fight before the end of the year. From what my sources tell me, there's a decent chance he could be under Hatton-Malignaggi on 11/22.
Nate Campbell
I need a government bailout!
Brock(Dayton,OH)
I'm not really familiar with many of the guys fighting on the Pavlik-Hopkins undercard, any potential for a good fight or two?
Dan Rafael (1:02 AM)
Rubio-Ornelas ought to be an old fashioned slugfest. Neither guy could get out of the way of a train, so it should be a good fight.
Matt, LA
I think Martinez looked great -- but, I think Max and Jim are going to have a catfight over who loves Sergio more. I never saw so much gushing and cooing over a fighter after 4 rounds.
Dan Rafael (1:02 AM)
It did get a little too lovey dovey for me.
Julio (PR)
Is JML ready to fight against rafael marquez or israel vazquez?
Dan Rafael (1:02 AM)
I think he is.
Frank (Chicago, IL)
How's the Jones/Calzaghe undercard?
Dan Rafael (1:03 AM)
A total mess. Only three TV bouts are scheduled -- the main event, Salita in a wc fight and another fight that has yet to be made. It looks woeful at the moment unless they come up with a great co-feature.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Given Hatton-Paulie is a GBP card, do your sources also tell you that Nate and Golden Boy are a possible match? It would be great news for a potential fight with JMM or a Diaz rematch.
Dan Rafael (1:04 AM)
It's a card co-promoted by Golden Boy and Lou DiBella.
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
I was trying to come up with a fighter that just kind of came out of nowhere and rose to p4p dominance. The only guy I could think of was Manny Pacquiao because I never remembered hearing about him before he won the title on his HBO debut. Can you help me out with some others?
Dan Rafael (1:04 AM)
That guy named Margarito pretty much shot up out of nowhere too.
John (Mpls,MN)
D$$$, since when is being compared to Naz a bad thing? He only destroyed his division and ended his career with one loss. Plus, I think he made a little money and some fans along the way. Gamboa should be so lucky.
Dan Rafael (1:06 AM)
If you listened to Max's closing comments you would understand that is what he meant. Gamboa has huge hype and a lot of talent but, like Hamed, he is deeply flawed. That was the point.
Jack (New YorK)
Who is the official promoter for Jones - Calzaghe? Is Jones compmany Square Ring still around?
Dan Rafael (1:06 AM)
Yes, Square Ring along with Joe's company.
Brian (Austin, Texas)
If Gamboa were to face JuanMa now who would you pick in that fight? Both guys are two of my faves so I'm kind of torn myself...
Dan Rafael (1:08 AM)
Lopez would slam him. He's a well-rounded professional with power and speed and I think a good chin. He's got better overall technique and that would be a huge factor.
mrmarksmith
Hey Dan,Great RAD tonight! a follow-up question to Pavlik possibly K.O.ing B-Hop: IF Pavlik DID K.O. Hopkins how big a deal would that be?
Dan Rafael (1:09 AM)
A huge deal. BHop has never been stopped or even close to being stopped. In fact, he's only been down twice -- in the same fight more than a decade ago. You stop BHop, it means something.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan whats the hardest punch you have ever seen someone hit with whether it KOd them or not?
Dan Rafael (1:10 AM)
I've been asked this before and I always think back to a nothing undercard fight years ago at the MSG Theater where Tokunbo Olajide knocked out a dude named Marvin Smith. I thought the punch killed him.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Would Morales and JMM have beaten Hamed like Barrera did?
Dan Rafael (1:11 AM)
I think so, yes.
Josh (New Yok)
Is HBO going to do another card early next year featuring Margarito and Cotto in anticipation of their summer rematch. If so, any idea who each of them will be fighting?
Dan Rafael (1:12 AM)
Both guys will fight but likely on difference cards. However, HBO won't necessarily show them. Top Rank hasn't committed to HBO and HBO hasn't committed to Top Rank. Neither have opponents yet.
Marc (Philly)
Are you coming to Chicago to see Steve USS Cunningham putting on a clinic against Tomaz Adamek?
Dan Rafael (1:14 AM)
Get a clue. The fight is in Newark.
Joe (NYC)
I remember that Olajide fight (on the Mosley-Forest I undercard). There wasn't a noise in that building for about 10 minutes afterward, until we saw that Smith was okay. That is an excellent recollection on your part.
Dan Rafael (1:15 AM)
That was a pretty sick knockout wasn't it?
Dan Rafael (1:16 AM)
We have breaking news from the Bat Email.
Dan Rafael (1:17 AM)
My man Fred Sternburg, who handles PR for Gary Shaw and his fighters, contacted me from Telecula to tell me that after his fight, Angulo called out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Jr. and then wants Duddy at 160 on St. Paddy's Day. Love it!!!!
Greg(Los Angeles)
Any chance of King putting on a decent undercard on the Cunningham-Adamek show?
Dan Rafael (1:19 AM)
It's a Main Events and DK card and they are working on something interesting for the opener, which I am not at liberty to dicuss at the moment.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
OH MY GOD! Angulo would murder poor Superstar-cito......good lord......and then Duddy? It should be on St. Valentine's Day, to commemorate the massacre sure to unfold....
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - JCC Jr. wouldn't have enough gas in the tank to go 10 rounds with Angulo and "Bloody" Duddy would be too proud for his own good.
Tex
Chavez Jr needs to get by Vanda first
SL (NY)
Thanks for the breaking news but why in the world Chavez Jr. and Duddy wanna be anywhere even near Angulo? they would get slammed
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
WOW!!! Angulo-Chavez Jr. is a WAR!!!
Erik (Atlanta, Ga)
If Chavez is smart he won't go near that fight!
Joe (NYC)
For the sake of Steve Cunningham, let's keep Marc under the impression that the fight will be in Chicago.
Dennis (Miami, Fl)
will a fight between the klitchko brothers ever happen ?
Dan Rafael (1:21 AM)
They have only said no about 1000000000 gazilion times. Pay attention.
Max (CA)
Arum will not let Chavez Jr. anywhere near Angulo. Duddy and his team on the other hand might be foolish enough to take the challange
Dan Rafael (1:22 AM)
Neither camp would have the stones to let their guy face Angulo.
MSmith (Taunton Mass.)
Dan,Do you catch the ESPN's Ringside?....and your opinion? Also have you ever been a participant on one of them?
Dan Rafael (1:23 AM)
Yes, I love it and yes, I have been on.
Freddie (Queens, NY)
Maybe a tag team of Jr. and Duddy could take out Angulo.
Joe (NYC)
Figure Duddy would just end up being a bloody version or Tsurkan, no? Too brave for his own good.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan,Anything new on Verno Phillips? I would figure at Verno's advanced age he needs to take action quick.
Dan Rafael (1:26 AM)
Nothing other than the Paul Williams fight is down the drain -- read Friday's notebook for the details.
Jack (New York)
What Classic Ringside episode were you on? I must have missed it.
Dan Rafael (1:27 AM)
I honestly have no idea. We taped a bunch of stuff.
Dan Rafael (1:28 AM)
