Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:01 PM)
Keith Kidd is here!
Keith Kidd (1:02 PM)
It's time to talk some ball, baby! Let's get rolling with your questions. If you have any suggestions for this week's Matt Millen Award, feel free to send them in.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
The best thing about each week: football on Sundays, the Matt Millen Chatter Award on Thursdays! I can't wait to see who wins it this week!
Ed (Boston)
Prediction for Pats/Chargers?
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
This is a must, must, must, must, must, must, must, must win for the Chargers. And I like them at home.
Jesse (Ohio)
What's up with Kellen Winslow sitting out of practice today? Will he be able to go on Monday against the G-Men?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
It's usually common for guys who are playing on Sunday and have nicks and bruises to sit out on Wednesday and guys who are playing on Monday to sit out on Thursday. I wouldn't read anything into it.
James (Los Angeles)
After losing to the Chargers and losing to the bills in the manner that they did, how do you think the Raiders will finish out the year with a new coach?
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
Great question. There will be an article of mine coming out on ESPN.com that looks at the positives and the things they can build on in Oakland. This team has some talented players. Their schedule is very favorable for them to win some games. I think you'll see a more explosive offense from a play-calling standpoint too.
Ben (ny, ny)
Is it panic time for bills fans?
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
Absolutely not. Let's face it, Edwards was knocked out in the first series of the game. You can't play each game perfect. Obviously, the Cardinals passing attack exploited the Bills backend. But I like this team to rebound.
Ed (Boston)
Millen Award - tie between Al Davis (falsely accusing the Patriots of tampering) and T.O. (crying on the sidelines).
Jason (Indiana)
What are your thoughts on Kyle Orton so far this season? Have the Bears finally found the QB they been looking for?
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
I think he's been very, very efficient in what Ron Turner has asked him to do. With the Bears, they have two pahses that have to be effective for them to win - defense and special teams. Don't turn the ball over and put the other team in the short field. But you have to be impressed with Orton right now.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
I nominate Adam Pacman Jones for the Matt Millen award this week!
Dolla (Jersey)
Has the Cowboys D become soft? I guess "Pacman" is back and Newman is hurt, are they still favorites in the NFC East?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
Disappointing moreso than anything. This team was lucky to beat Cincy last week. Once Carson Palmer gets into a rhythm, it looked like they were going to go down and score, but Chris Perry puts the ball on the ground. I'm not panicking at all, but it's getting close.
David (Houston, TX)
Is Matt Leinart going to ride the bench all year? What about next year with the free agent to be Kurt Warner who wants to stay in Arizona?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
Yes. This is Kurt Warner's team in 2008. The key will be Kurt Warner turning the ball over. If he doesn't, they should be able to win. This division is horrible and the Cardinals should win it.
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
If Kurt Warner continues to play at the level he is, it will come down to money. I don't know if they'll want to pay him.
Tom (Syracuse, NY)
Biggest surprise: Chargers 2-3 or Falcons 3-2?
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
Falcons. Mike Smith has done a great job with this team. I love the way Matt Ryan is playing. Michael Turner has been absolutely amazing. But this offensive line has been great. I'm a little leery of their defense, espeically on the back end.
Ryan (America's Finest City)
Is the Broncos D more effective using the 3-4 or the 4-3?
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
Their personnel is set up for them to be a 4-3. They don't have a NT to play a 3-4. This team has got to get better against the run. For whatever reason, Tampa Bay got away from it last week.
Dave
Sage Rosenfels also deserves some serious consideration for the Millen Award this week!
Jim: Ocean Springs
What are your thoughts of Sean Payton's coaching ability? He keeps making dumb calls, like the on side kick against the Vikings. A lot of Saints fans are screaming about him. As a fan myself, I'm getting kind of iffy about him. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
I love his coaching ability, but I am disappointed in his team right now for their undisciplined play. A lot of bad decisions at critical times.
Zac (MN)
How much blame should be put on Chris Kluwe for kicking it to Bush Monday night? Childress threw him under the bus and now is trying out 4 different punters. Kluwe is a great punter so I think it would be a huge mistake to let him go. It can't be that easy kicking the ball out of bounds 40-50 yards down the field. If he would have kicked it 20-30 yards but out of bounds would Childress have been happy? I can't believe I wrote all that regarding a punter.
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
I don't get why he would throw this kid under the bus. There are 10 other guys on the punt coverage team. I didn't catch all of Brad Childress's press conference, but some punters aren't built to be directional punters. And kicking it out of bounds is harder than it looks. It's a team game.
Majeed
Told ya my Fins would take down the Bolts!
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, do the Steelers with Harrison, Farrior, Foote, Woodley and Timmons have the best LB crew in the league?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Yes, no doubt. Throw in Paumaula and you have a very tough team to run against. This Steeler defense is extremely talented and very difficult to run on. It will be interesting to see what happens when they face a team that likes to throw it.
Ryan (San Diego)
That is a lot of musts. I think it is a very big game too, but they play well at home and on primetime. Too bad their first two losses have them in a must win so early.
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
I agree. They were robbed in Denver and they lost to the Panthers on the last play of the game. They have to somewhere make those up. But they started 1-3 a year ago. They've been there. Without a healthy LT right now, they should come all out and wing the ball all over the field. Try to exploit the Patriots back end.
Tom (Syracuse, NY)
Which coach is next in line on the 'Hot Seat' after the firings of Linehan and Kiffin?
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
Childress in Minnesota. This could be an explosion this year. I'd watch the Childress situation.
shawn (ocala,fl)
ronnie brown a top 5 rb?
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
Before the season started, I got a lot of criticism because he was one of my break through players this season. They all thought I was crazy. He has been so impressive in how they've used him in Miami in that Wildcat grouping, along with getting Ricky Williams on the field too. This is why you pay coaches those big dollars. The OL and DL in Miami have been very impressive. They will be a team to reckon with in the next couple of years once they get some more players at the skill positions.
David (Houston, TX)
Did the Giants victory without Paxico show us how good Eli is or how much depth they have at WR?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
Plaxico who? In all seriousness, this is what you get when you allow a head coach to implement his program and be patient with the QB. This team reminds me of the Patriots. They are loaded and very, very good and very physical.
Carol (Largo, FL)
Hmmmmm...Majeed broke his own rule. The Fins aren't yours, Majeed....smiling.
Titans Fans Everywhere
I think everyone in here will agree that Ryan from San Diego wins the Matt Millen award hands down this week. In every single chat last week all we heard about was how over rated the Titans are and how the Chargers were going to roll the Dolphins. hahahaha good call man!!!!!!!!!!
jerrod (ia)
What are the chances the Chiefs unload LJ this season?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
No. He just signed a new contract last season. It doesn't make sense for them to unload him. If there's a change in KC, you already have a huge building block with your franchise back already in place.
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Everybody's under the impression that these big trades will happen before the deadline. It's far from the truth. The person that is traded to the team has to be ready to come in and play right away. The only trade that's really been made in the last few years was Chris Chambers and he had played in a similar offense under Norv Turner.
Jon (Phoenix)
Will Tommie Harris ever be dominant again, as he was in 2006?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
That's a great question, because he's been very disappointing this year in the tape I've seen. The Bears need him to come around and get back to that '06 style. It could be the knee that's bothering him, I don't know.
Evan (NJ)
KK.... how do you see the AFC North shaping up? PGH has only played 2 home games so far. their November home games against Indy & SD don't look AS tough as they did when the schedule came out, based on how those teams are playing.
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
It's a one-team race - the Steelers. The Ravens can't score enought to be competitive. It's the Steelers' division to lose.
Ryan (America's Finest City)
I don't buy the "they started 2-3 last year" line about the Chargers. The Broncos weren't 4-1 at this time last year. The Chargers are done. There is no leadership on that team. When LT is not playing he sits on the bench instead of cheering on his teammates. The defense celebrates after every tackle like they just won the Super Bowl. Norv Turner is the Head Coach. Nuff said, the Chargers are DONE!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I'm not convinced Childress is the best man for the job in Minnesota anyway. If the Vikes don't make the playoffs, does he get fired and if so, who in your opinion would be a good choice to be their HC?
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
In season? Leslie Frasier, the defensive coordinator.
Jeff (East Bay, CA)
Keith...why does nobody mention that the Jets (w/ Pennington and Brad Smith) ran a variation of the "innovative, brand new" Wildcat formation two years ago? Everybody needs to stop giving all the credit to Miami!
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
It's a different version, because Brad Smith is considered a WR. That was just a gadget play. Similarities would be more like the Mike Vick offense in Atlanta, but that was a QB. This is by a back.
Majeed
Carol, They are now since they're winning again. Mad Mike's Texans are the next ones to go down!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I'd like to second Ryan for the Millen Award but then again, he might actually see it as a compliment.
Pete (Knoxville)
Are the Titans the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl?
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
I'm not convinced yet about the Titans as the favorites. I think it's wide open. Outside of Chris Johnson, I don't see any explosive players on this offense.
Andy (NYC)
Kidder, would the Bills even consider trading for Tony Gonz? He would be a huge help to the offense, they have the caps room, and they have a chance to make a run.
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
It takes two teams to tango. I don't know if the Chiefs are willing to unload Gonzalez. The Chiefs aren't going to just give anybody away.
David (Fairborn, OH)
Leslie Fraiser failed as a DC in Cincy, how in the heck could he be a HC in minny?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
We're talking about an interim coach, not full time. If the change happened during the season.
Dan (DC)
How much does Jim Zorn's departure have on the putrid Seattle passing game?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Great question. In all fairness to Seattle, this team has had an unbelievable amount of injuries. In the West Coast offense, everything is based on timing and throwing to spots. When you don't have any continuity at WR, it will cause some problems. My question is, where is their defense?
JAke (Cincinatti)
What do you think about the Quarterback situation in Minnesota?
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
I hate it. I don't like it at all. Obviously, Tavaris Jackson has not developed as we'd hoped and Frerotte is a short term solution. They'll have to address the QB situation in the offseason.
David (Houston, TX)
Is Torry Holt shopwing is age or numbers down due to poor play on Rams offense?
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
It's hard to tell because this team has been so bad. In watching him, you got the impression that he was very very frustrated. With that said, it will be interesting to see how he plays under Haslett. He's a great motivator and when you talk to players in this league, they love playing for him.
Brian (Milwaukee)
What's your impression of Aaron Rodgers and his first 5 weeks with the Pack?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
I've been very impressed. I think he's a great fit in Mike McCartney's offense. Just watching him last week playing with that bad shoulder - he gutted it out and he was impressive. My biggest question is their run defense. They got gashed.
Josh (Da Burg)
What is up with Steve Smith this year? He isn't as exciting as before.
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
I disagree with you. The defense always has to account for him, regardless of where he is in the formation. Let's not forget, he missed two games. He's still a great player.
RIT (Scottdale PA)
Do you blame the coaching Staff in minnesota for travaris jackson not devolping?
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
It's easy in this league for the personnel guys to blame the coaching staff and vice versa. However, I'm not blaming either right now. He came from a small school and it's hard to develop QB's in this league. They don't have a lot of exciting players around him. They just need to get his confidence back.
Joe (Cubicle Hell)
KKIDD... if you were Marinelli, when do you sit Ktina and see what you have in Orlovsky and or Stanton? I would do it NOW!
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
He's trying to find someway, somehow to win a game and he feels that Kitna gives him the best shot at doing that. However, at some time, he's going to have to get a look at the future QBs.
Jay Cutler
Keith, your starting a team tomorrow, am I your QB? Why or Why Not?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Hey Jay, I love ya. You are going to be very special. However, if I'm starting a team today, I'm going to New England to get a healthy Tom Brady.
DJ (Minneapolis)
Everyone gave me hell when I said that Jason Campbell is a top 10 QB and on his way to being top 5. How long before Campbell is in the conversation with the Mannings and Romo?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
He's already in the conversation with Tony Romo. If Jason Campbell can maintain what he's doing what he's doing over 16 games, then he is closing the gap. But right now, he's not close to the Manning brothers.
Steve (DC)
Do you think Laron Landry get his props around the league? I mean NODOBY is throwing his way this year, I really think he has developed into a top 5 safety.
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
I agree. I loved him coming out of college and I continue to love him.
Xander (Philly)
Any definite word on Westbrook this weekend? If he's out does Buckhalter start or Tony Hunt?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
It'll be a gametime decision. What happens in this situation is his ability to handle the pain. With that said, it will be Buckhalter if he's unable to play.
Shawn (PA)
Is there a serious sense of panic in Jacksonville right now? 2-3 record, still no threat in the passing game, and Fred Taylor/Maurice Jones-Drew aren't running like last year. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
Yes. Obviously you're seeing the effects of what injuries can do to your OL. If Jacksonville can get back to their bread and better in pounding the rock, this is the weekend to do it against that Broncos run defense.
Pete (Knoxville)
Who is the more talented QB? Aaron Rodgers or Matt Leinart? I believe it's Matt Leinart.
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
Aaron Rodgers. Next question!
Pete (Knoxville)
So you believe that Eli Manning is a better QB then Tony Romo. You have got to be kidding me!!!!
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
Yes. Obviously, you didn't read our piece on QBs.
Benjamin Plattsburgh
I don't care who the rb is cracked ribs is too painful.... no way to avoid hits on the ribs.... hard to get up when every single hit you take feels like you just got jacked up by Ray Lewis
Benjamin Plattsburgh
I believe that Matt Ryan is secretly the third Manning brother.... a long lost illegitimate child of Archie.....
Marcus (Chicago)
I still think the Bears should spend all their draft picks on QB's next year. They might get one that is worth keeping right?
PT (Franklin, NC)
Who has more rushing yards for the rest of the year Justin Fargas or McFadden?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
Fargas, if he can stay healthy.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Pete of Knoxville is now a nominee for the Matt Millen award!
Sean (Philly)
Pete, Eli won a SB, Romo hasn't won a playoff game.
Rex Grossman (Chicago)
Leave Tony Romo alone! Since when are throwing bad interceptions and fumbling all the time a bad thing!
Kyle (TX)
odds on (another) Pitt-Dall superbowl?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
Ain't gonna happen. I don't see that happening.
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
The Matt Millen Award goes to........
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
Pacman Jones for beating up his bodyguard. Here's some advice to you -- don't go out! Stay at home. Pacman Jones.
Sean (Philly)
Who has the best secondary in the league?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
I would say the Redskins, based on the way everyone's playing right now. The Giants, Tennessee, Baltimore, these are all secondaries that are playing very well right now. I know I've probalby left someone out, but I'm talking about teams that are playing well right now.
Adam (Jersey)
Who've you got in Bucs/Panthers this weekend? Panthers o-line could be without 3 starters...
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
I like the Bucs at home this week. Although this is a great rivalry in the NFC South, I'm going with the home team. I'm anxious to see how Jeff Garcia plays.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
WOOOT!!! Excellent choice KK!!! Good to see one of my nominees from the beginning of the show won!
Luis (SB, CA)
Travis Henry....Takes the cake for Millen award. This guy is a cancer to society
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
To get this award, you have to actively playing in the league.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Tony Romo has a lot in common with Santa Claus. He hands out a lot of presents in December then takes January off!
David (Kent)
Does Atlanta have a shot against Chicago Sunday?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
Yes, because the Falcons have been very impressive with their running game. They'll pose some problems for the Bears. Should be an interesting game to watch.
Pete (Knoxville)
Eli Manning spent the first 90% of his career stuggling terribly. His defense carried him to a super bowl period. Tony Romo has been a playmaker since day 1. Lets not annoint Eli because his defense won him a championship.
brice (ny)
how do you see the afc east playing out?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
The Patriots are still the team to beat, but the gap between them has closed very quickly. It's still a wide open race, but the Pats are still the favorite in my mind.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Pete doesn't know when to stop...
Paul (Raleigh NC)
WIth Selvin Young out, does Micheal Pittman start this week?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
Andre Hall would be my guess. However, I do expect Pittman's role to increase on offense.
Greg (Arizona)
With the emergence of Steve Breaston & Early Doucet to go along with Larry Fitzgerald, should the Cardinals look to trade Anquan Boldin in the offseason?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
I wouldn't trade him, but I think that will be a serious discussion in the offseason for the Cardinals. They're not going to give Boldin away. They gave him a lot of money. I wouldn't trade him unless I got multiple draft picks.
Piff (Ridley)
KK - This is the most running Travis Henry has done since he came into the league.
Jake (VA Beach)
Shouldn't Pete's location say (Homerville, Dallas)?
Paul (Raleigh NC)
Keith do the Rams and Lions start cleaning house before the trade deadline?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
No. Cleaning house? I don't see a lot of deals being done for either one of these organizations unless someone is willing to give up a lot for someone, then you'd have to consider it.
Rich (Waldorf, MD)
Your getting Romo confused with Roethlisberger... who has been a playmaker since day 1. Romo was on the bench for 2 or 3 years... remember?
Will J (Portland, OR)
Keith you should give the Matt Millen award to Pacman's bodyguard. Any bodyguard who gets beat up shouldn't be in that field.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Pete: It doesn't count when the plays you make favor your opponents.
Chris, Milwaukee
KK-Do you have any updates Colston's status? How involved would he be in their game plan?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
From some of the reports I've gotten, he's starting to practice, both he and Jeremy Shockey. That's good news. But man, that offense looked good against the Vikings moving the ball, they just couldn't score points.
TK (brooklyn)
Keith, how has Jason Peters play so far this season effected his hopes of getting a new contract from Buffalo in the offseason?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
It's obvious the missed offseason and training camp has affected his performance, because he hasn't played well. That's a very difficult position to play if you miss a lot of time like that.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Thanks for a great chat again, KK! I can't wait to see who wins the Matt Millen award next week!
Kevin (Glen Rock, NJ)
What is your upset for the weekend?
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
Arizona over Dallas.
Adam (Jersey)
I don't love Tony Romo, but he's only been the starter for a year and a half. Let's not give him Dan Marino status until he has a couple years in the playoffs.
Internet Tough Guy (Cyberspace)
I'm sick of hearing about Tony Romo. I kick the crap out of people on a daily basis, but he was definitely the easiest. He's a pansy and he can't even hold for a field goal.
Sean (Philly)
Eli has 3,000+ yards and 20+TD's in every season he has played 16 games, and I dislike the Cowboys more than the Giants.
Joe (NY)
Is the NFC now the power conference?
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
Yeah, right now they are. The NFC East is the most dominant. And the AFC is all over the place.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
KK: Everyone looks good moving the ball on the Vikings. They've made defensive upgrades everywhere but in the secondary.
dolla (jersey)
booooooooo
Tyler (Anchorage)
Please don't get Pete started again Keith!!!
Paul (Raleigh Nc)
How likely will Lovie Smith gone if Cincy cannot turn their season around?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Hey Paul, it must be getting close to cocktail hour for you. It's Marvin Lewis and I don't think they'll cut him loose. They don't need to fire Marvin Lewis, they need to get him an established GM and personnel department. That's what he needs help with.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Yeah Pete remember in the Super Bowl when Romo...oh, never mind.
Benjamin Plattsburgh
Unless your walter jones
Rich (Waldorf, MD)
I'm sorry... can you ask that again? it makes no sense in its current formation. Lovie Smith and Cincy???
Tyler (Anchorage)
If the Bengals cannot turn their season around? 100 % chance they don't get it turned around.
Pete (Knoxville)
Take a look at Tony Romo's stats and compare them to eli's....
Paul (Raleigh NC)
Nope not cocktail hour, I just get two mixed up.
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
The 'Nation's gotten me fired up today. It's all pissy.
Renegade
There's only two other quarterbacks that I'd choose before Romo and it's Brady and P. Manning (Not Eli).
Greg (Champaign, IL)
pete, be quiet!!!!!!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The Cowboys aren't taking disciplinary actions against Pac Man. Why am I not surprised? Jerry Jones looks the other way so much he needs rear view mirrors on his ears just to see where he's going.
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
They want it to go away as quickly as it happened. I guess they don't see it as being that big of a deal. It's probably one of those made for TV blow up media deals.
Eli
Peyton is so overrated. He's washed up! I'm the Man-ning now!
Mike
Drew Brees has outplayed both of them.
John Madden (Madden Cruiser)
You know Keith, players in the NFL are tough. Like Brett Favre. He's tough because he's tougher than the other guys and then he out toughs them. Tony Romo, he's not very tough. BOOM!
jon (chicago)
I think regardless of what Cincy does this year, there is 100% chance Lovie Smith is not their coach next year.
Keith Kidd (2:05 PM)
Hey 'Nation, it's been great. A lot of whining today, but I love it. Make sure you tune in next week at the same time. And be sure to check out the Monday Night Football preview on PodCenter. We'll be back on Sunday from 1-7 p.m. ET talking ball with the Scouts guys. Have a safe and fun weekend.
