JL (Hoboken, NJ)
Hey Paul, so who is generating more buzz in Nashville: the Titans or Vanderbilt?
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
Both. Titans are more popular, but Vandy's the team in uncharted territory... Hi everybody, thanks for coming...
Anthony, Nashville
Take away the penalties & turnovers from both the Titans & Ravens on everyone of there scoring drives and that game goes into Overtime tied 0-0.
Paul Kuharsky (3:03 PM)
Take away all the touchdowns and field goals Team X has scored this season and they've been shutout...
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
Paul- the Titans won a tough game last sunday, but Kerry looked shaky for the most part. Think that there is more of a push to possibly get Vince back on the field now?
Paul Kuharsky (3:04 PM)
Why? From who? You think VY would have done well against that defense?
Chuck (Austin, Texas)
Sage doesn't have those 3 turnovers and the Texans wins the game, Sage is starting next week, right?
Paul Kuharsky (3:04 PM)
Schaub doesn't get sick and Sage never plays. Should Schaub lose his job because he lost his lunch?
Ryan (Phoenix, AZ)
Paul, How many more weeks until the Colts pull it together on the o-line, I understand there are injuries, but a little cohesion would go a long way to fixing the running game/giving Peyton more time.
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
They will be choosing from the healthiest bunch they've had all season this week. And I don't know if they'll be able to count on Lilja anytime soon. So this is what they've got. Wrote a bit about Richard earlier today. Please check it out...
Bill Parcells
So how bout them 'Fins! I can say my newest project has been rather succesful. Do you see us being able to beat the Texans? And is anyone going to stop this "Wildcat"?
Paul Kuharsky (3:06 PM)
I'm surprised at how well the Wildcat has worked. First time is a surprise. After that? Of course Mimai can beat Houston. The Texans are the winless ones...
Paul (Raleigh NC)
Hey Paul, what's Justin Gage's knee status?
Paul Kuharsky (3:06 PM)
Think he'll be in line to play in KC...
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
VY did pretty darn good against the Ravens defense 2 years ago.... also, one of his best games last year was against the Chiefs... you don't see him at least getting spot play next week?
Paul Kuharsky (3:07 PM)
No I don't. Things are going great. Why mess with it? For Vince's ego?
Steve (Memphis,TN)
From a distance, do you think the Titans are worried about Pacman being in trouble again knowing it might cost them a 2009 5th round pick?
Paul Kuharsky (3:08 PM)
Out of their hands. If it's the cost of all this unfolding somewhere else, so be it. Wrote a bit about that today on the blog too...
Mike (Iowa)
Any word if Floyd Reese will get an interview for the Lions GM job?
Paul Kuharsky (3:08 PM)
I don't think they'll start looking until after the season. I think he's a long shot there...
Justin (Buffalo)
The Bills have a tough stretch coming up if they want to make a run for the division. With San Diego, Miami, Jets, and NE, what do you think they're record will be in those games?
Paul Kuharsky (3:09 PM)
Depends on Edwards' health...
Dave, LV
I read the part about Richard and I tend to agree with the scout's assessment. I think he has done ok, about what one could realistically expect from a rookie who's played 2 different positions in his first 4 games. I will say though, that kind of versatility is a Howard Mudd staple and I think with more experience that Jamey will be a very valuable member of that o-line.
Paul Kuharsky (3:09 PM)
I agree. But they need production now to get on track and I don't know if they have the horses to get it...
Vince (Akron)
Outside of Addia, who is the next best all around back in the South?
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
Addai's not been consistently productive for a while. Off of what's unfolded this year? You'd have to say Slaton or CJ. I'd still take Fred Taylor myself...
Jason Chicago
Paul you said a couple weeks ago that losing Wade & THen & Drew Bennett wasnt the reason VY threw a ton of picks in 2007 as opposed to 2006. But i beg to differ and i argue that VY is about as sucessfull as Kerry one tradeoff is VY's running ability matches his ability to turn the ball over. Kerry has roughly the same passer rating over these last 4 games that Vince had over 15 last year. Can we finally say its officially not the QB and its the lack of talent/playmaking ability at WR. Mason is not the biggest strongest or fastest WR out there but he is most def a playmaker
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
Here's what doesn't get factored into the passer rating: Respect in the locker room, leadership, accountability. We should rewrite the formula for the rating. I can't understand how anyone who roots for the Titans would want Collins on the bench right now. Pass catchers are good enough to win with. Look at the record, right?
Brady (Bowling Green, OH)
Can the Browns pull the upset on MNF against the Giants? They are in an early must win situation to keep pace with the Steelers and Ravens. Thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:14 PM)
I think they'll lose...
John (Nashville, TN)
If Albert Haynesworth continues to perform after the bye week at a high level, will the Titans break the bank to sign him long term - I am assuming it will take breaking the bank to accomplish this.
Paul Kuharsky (3:15 PM)
I don't think they'll have a chance to sign him if he meets the incentives to get to free agency. And he will so long as he doesn't get hurt. If he gets within six weeks of free agency, he would wait. He'd be crazy not to. Someone will make him the highest-paid defensive player in history...
Paul (Raleigh)
Paul, Steve Slaton has looked impressive at times, are teams seeing him as a threat?
Paul Kuharsky (3:15 PM)
Absolutely. How could they not?
Joey (Rochester, New York)
Chris Davis has had some nice catches to extend some drives this year. Any talk of trying to get him involved more?
Paul Kuharsky (3:16 PM)
I don't think so. I think he's about topped out and that they'd do better to get Hawkins involved...
Paul (Raleigh NC)
how much of an impact has the return of Javon Kerse actually been for the D-line in TN?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
Not as much as the Odom-LaBoy tandem...
Greg (Merritt island, fla.)
Do you think tampa can take the division? and do you think the defense still has it?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
I like Carolina and NO beter than Tampa. But remember, I am the AFC South guy....
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
Are the Titans licking their chops at their week 7 matchup with Brodie Croyle?
Paul Kuharsky (3:18 PM)
I think they are licking their chops over three days off...
Chtristian (baltimore)
Do you think that the titans and raven could meet in the playoff for a rematch and who win if they did. Also do you think that last week game rebirth of the rivalry between these two teams (Everyu time the ravens made the playoff they almost always have to face the titans)
Paul Kuharsky (3:19 PM)
I am reluctant to pick this week's games, better yet a potential playoff matchup in January. Would be a good game. Two great defenses...
Chris (Ole' Miss)
Haynesworth has stated he wants to remain a Titan. If he is true to his word he 'at least' listens to the Titans offer in the offseason before Free Agency starts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:20 PM)
He listens, he thinks it's low, he waits to listen to someone else, he calls the Titans and tells them the offer, they say thanks and good luck...
Aaron (Nashville)
How many wins do you see the Titans ending the regular season with (with minimal major injuries)?
Paul Kuharsky (3:21 PM)
I think they lose four, maybe five...
Jessica (Indianapolis)
Paul I don't think anyone is calling for Vince Young to be the starter over Colling right now. But some of us (Titans fans) would like to see VY get some soon and see how he does. Collins has been okay but not spectacular and his play over the last 2 games has been less than impressive (save the TD drive last week). What harm would it do to get VY some snaps soon, specifically against a weak team like Kansas City?
Paul Kuharsky (3:22 PM)
It would suggest a lack of faith in the guy they've said will start so long as things are going well. They beat MIN and BAL, two pretty good defenses. They are concerned about the W-L results, not the QB numbers, no matter which guy is in there...
Bill Parcells
Who is Mimai? You press people always get to me... The Texans almost beat the Colts and the Jags; They are definitely better then 0-4. Who wins Jake Long vs Mario Williams?
Paul Kuharsky (3:23 PM)
I apologize. M-I-A-M-I. All I intended to say was it would be a biiger surprise if HOU wins than MIA...
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
Do you think Lavelle Hawkins has any shot at passing Chris Davis on the depth chart this season??
Paul Kuharsky (3:23 PM)
I hope he does. But they are slow to make such changes...
Paul (Raleigh NC)
Alge Crumpler hasn't been much of a target like he was in ATL, will he get into the gameplan more?
Paul Kuharsky (3:24 PM)
Please see blog entry from yesterday. It's not a matter of him not being in the plan, it's a matter of how people are defending Tennessee's offense...
Ross (Montreal, WI)
Pacman is not going to be disciplined by the Cowboys. You think that is because Terrence Newman is out?
Paul Kuharsky (3:24 PM)
They should have suspended him the minute this happened. Their best chance to keep Goodell happy....
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
Is Chris Johnson the greatest thing since sliced bread?
Greg (merritt island)
Do you think tampa's defense still has it?
Paul Kuharsky (3:25 PM)
Still good. Not as good as in its prime...
Aaron (Nashville)
I don't think some fans understand how valuable stability is here in Nashville. After the Pacman fiasco and VY's "meltdown", it's just nice to see headlines about the play of the team, not the mental/emotional/criminal states of a certain player. I just wish that chatty Kathy Peter King would quite gossiping about KC's contract and stick to the regular season..leave that speculation to the offseason.
Paul Kuharsky (3:26 PM)
I agree with the first part of what you say. I don't understand why you think PK or any writer should feel obligated to steer away from any subject. Kerry's future is a legit topic...
Erik, (Silver Spring, MD)
Do you think Brandon jones has any shot at passing J-mac on the depth chart. And do you think J-mac is still a quality receiver?
Paul Kuharsky (3:27 PM)
I think he's OK. I think the coordinator likes him better than Brandon. I don't see a change in the starters...
Jason (Buffalo)
How about the Titans get rid of the dark blue pants with the home jerseys and bring back the white pants. It's tough to look at.
Paul Kuharsky (3:27 PM)
I'll pass that along...
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
Any chance the salary cap would go down next year, especially given the state of our (and the global) economy?
Paul Kuharsky (3:28 PM)
I think the TV contracts, which pay for most things, are in place and will be paid in full. More people weill stay home and watch TV in the bad economy, the NFL on TV will remain strong. I guess the worry should be if the advertising drops off...
Erik, (Silver Spring, MD)
Do you think Matt Jones will face any punishment from the league?
Paul Kuharsky (3:29 PM)
Yes. But when is the question. He's been very good this year. I am impressed with him....
ATL
Hey Paul, despite what happened on Monday Night do you see the Saints contending for the NFC Championship this season?
Paul Kuharsky (3:29 PM)
They were my preseason NFC pick. Now I don't think they are as good as any team in the East...
Jeff (philly)
8 of the Steelers next 10 games are against Washington, the Giants, San Diego, the Colts, the Pats, Baltimore, Tenn and the Cowboys. Oh my!!
Paul Kuharsky (3:30 PM)
Reason for the Ravens to feel encouraged. I think I heard it rates as the toughest schedule ever...
Sammy (Niagara Falls, Canada)
So far how do you rate the Titans rookie draft class?
Paul Kuharsky (3:31 PM)
Not bad. Top guy contibuting big, Second guy a factor. The rest coming along slowly. Like they like it...
Jamie (Caldwell,Oh)
Who is more at fault for the browns woes this year, the coaching staff or the 'star' players for their lack of production?
Paul Kuharsky (3:32 PM)
They were not equipped to handle the big expectations. I bet they are good with a soft schedule and low expectations next season....
Chuck (Austin, Texas)
Titans fans wanted to draft Limas Sweed, but he hasn't even seen the field with the Steelers. Considering the Steelers took Sweed right before the Titans, are the Titans better off in the long run with Jason Jones over Limas Sweed?
Paul Kuharsky (3:32 PM)
They are because of the likelihood of Albert's departure...
Andy (Ann Arbor, MI)
I can't wait until the Lions play the Texans!
Paul Kuharsky (3:33 PM)
Happy Thanksgiving!
Richard (Knoxville)
I would think KVB's groin injury was pretty bad for him not to play after the 1st quarter. Shouldn't they rest him for the Chiefs game as well.
Paul Kuharsky (3:33 PM)
I expect him to play. Richard, you're a loyal guy, I appreciate your perfect record being here...
Guy (Round Rock, TX)
Yes the Texans blew it with the end of the game turnovers but how did Indy march down to score the first of the three touchdown? Texans' D held them all day. Is the D capable of playing 4 full quarters? (JAX did the same thing in OT).
Paul Kuharsky (3:35 PM)
They let up, like every team up that big in the fourth quarter does. I'm not saying it's right -- it's not. But coordinators go with softer stuff in those situations...
Thomas (Charlotte)
So Paul, you think the titans will only finish with 9-10 wins on the season??? that puts them finishing the season with a record of 4-7 or 5-6, I find that pretty hard to believe. Comments?? thanks.
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
I said four or five losses, didn't I? That would be 12-4 or 11-5. I said as many as six last week -- I thought they would split with MIN and BAL. I think they split with the Colts, lose to the Jags, lose GB or CHI, lose PIT...
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
what do you think the Ravens D will do against the seemingly out of sync Colts offense?
Paul Kuharsky (3:37 PM)
Advantage Baltimore...
Josh(nashville)
Paul a week ago you said that titans would lose 5-6 games on 104.5 morning show(by th way love your segment), do you still believe that?
Paul Kuharsky (3:37 PM)
I've gone from 5-6 to 4-5 as I thought they would probably lose in Baltimore. Thanks for listening. I love being part of that show...
JB (TX)
PK, late to the party this week, so if you answered this I'm sorry: Correct me if I'm wrong the Titans lose a '09 4th rounder if Pacman gets suspended at any point this season, but if they keep covering up incidents for him nothing happens. Am I right?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
It's up on the blog., If he's available for 16, they get a sixth. If he's suspended they give up a fifth...
Aaron (NY)
There have been some rumors out there of trades before the deadline. One I heard was Houshmazoli to the Bills...championship...any truth to any of the rumors out there of trades before the deadline?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
I'd bet no big WR gets traded anywhere...
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
Any word from the Titans brass regarding some of Haynesworth's recent comments, I think he said something about playing VY and def mentioned trading for a WR
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
Isn't it great that he's so good he can actually speak his mind instead of the company line? I love it...
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
You referred to Heimerdinger as "the coordinator." Does that mean: a) There is some kind of Beef between you two b)You like to impersonate Bill Parcells or c) You can't spell his name
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
I love him and have his name down, though he's fine being called Dinger. An aggressive play caller...
Andy (Ann Arbor, MI)
Compared to every other major sports league, the NFL has waaaaay less in-season trades. Your thoughts on why this is? Also, there are rumors, but do you see any trades happening before the dealine next week, specifically from DET or STL? Thanks!
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
Salary cap implications and the time it takes a guy to learn a new system. Dumping a guy in a contract year is not an NFL thing. You trade Roy Williams now, what are you saying to your ticket holders? I know you wanted to see him, but we're building for the future and think how much more exciting draft day will be?
John Carney (New York)
I guess place kickers get no love in eh Paul? No offense to JL FROM HOBOKEN, NJ but you've answered upwards to FIVE of his postings thus far...how is it you can catch his postings and now mine? Not feeling the love Paul...not feeling the love.
Paul Kuharsky (3:42 PM)
I am not following those kickers on a daily basis and they are not that interesting to me. For future reference, is that better or worse than passing on the question?
Guy (Round Rock, TX)
Super Mario vs. Jake Long. Advantage?
Paul Kuharsky (3:42 PM)
Has to be Mario. But Long will get help...
Mike
On the issue of trades..I have to plead ignorance here...but does the NFL have any rules like MLB does, such as the 10/5 rule? (No player with 10 years service and 5 straight with the same team can be traded without giving approval) Just curious. I know that the cap makes it tough for trades to happen.
Paul Kuharsky (3:44 PM)
No such rule. But they don't need it because of other stuff. If I trade you right now and you have more than this season on your contract, all the remaining pro-rated bonus money goes on this year's cap. That's usually too difficult to swallow...
JB (TX)
I'd love to see a big name WR or the Titans like most fans, but what agent is gonna steer his client to TEN? Besides I think their ok w/the current group, no one complaining about "touches."
Paul Kuharsky (3:45 PM)
I think they need a guy with a touch of give-me-the-ball attitude. Al there guys have the same mellow personality. WRs need a certain personality and the Titans seemed scared of it. Not an attractive destination -- until the dollars talk....
Richard (Knoxville)
Paul, you are painting a picture that scares me. Albert leaving, probably Schwartz as well, Vince starting again in 09-10. I am thinking the Titans should do everything they can this year (receiver!) because I for one could see a significant dropp off for next season.
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
I don't have Vince starting in 09 if that eases things for you. But yeah, their best chance is now. I think AH and JS are goners...
Nate (Westminster, MD)
Is there a chance, outside of injury, that the other RBs get worked into rotation going forward? Chris Henry, Q-Ganther? Or is it always going to be just CJohnson and Lendale?
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
As long as they are healthy, status quo. It's amazing how many changes people want. Imagine when they lose a game!
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
What do you think of the Ravens/Colts matchup this weekend-- the Colts are favored by 4, do you think it's justified?
Paul Kuharsky (3:47 PM)
No. But spreads are created to divide money, not to reflect the actual strength of teams. I favor Ravens...
John Carney (New York)
NO RESPONSE NECESSARY...You are a sports collumnist here to take questions from fans and readers...I understand some questions may not be interesting..but let's be honest here...there are plenty of comments you addressed that really seem trivial. Your fans have questions...this one seemed relevant to this weeks matchups and certainly no less important than some of the comments that you deemed more worthy. Thanks for listening.
Joey (Rochester, New York)
You don't have Young starting in 09? What's your scenario? Collins signs/Open Competition? Young gets released, ect?
Paul Kuharsky (3:48 PM)
Vince doesn't change and doesn't win it. And Collins or Simms or TBD takes it...
Josh (nashville)
Plan on playing the lotto scratch off anytime soon??
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
Nope...
Joey (Rochester, New York)
I keep saying this, but the Titans need to use Ahmard Hall more, the guy is a beast!
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
He's great. I could see four touches a game. More than that and you're taking away from CJ...
JB (TX)
Is LenDale hurt? Only 4 carries last week, ran tentative vs. MIN the week before...
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
Said his shoulder injury was the reason...
Christian (baltimore)
For the past decade the Ravens had one of the top defense in the Nfl. This same defense is starting to get old as shown over the past couple of weeks. (They have not been able to close the last two games because of last minute drives by opposing team)I remeber the days when if the ravens score a field goal they won the game. So what i am tryong to ask is this the last year the ravens d will be at it greatest and force to fear. Also does this mean trouble for Flacco since he wont be able to rely on them much longer
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
The still looked pretty good to me. Need to get younger at corner. Sure they've got people in the pipeline or will draft them...
Ryan (Richmond, VA)
Paul, when is Lavelle Hawkins going to fly? Or even Paul Williams for that matter?
Paul Kuharsky (3:51 PM)
Hawkins ranks ahead of Williams. Who flies in this offense?
Rob (Fort Myers, FL)
Paul..is it possible that the Colts BIGGER problem is their defense and the fact that they don't seem to be able to stop anybody? Every one is talking of the run game and the offensive line, but the defense has been extremely shaky.
Paul Kuharsky (3:51 PM)
Run defense is the biggest issues of all, definitely. Sanders will help if he's back on time...
Josh (nashville)
Does Chris Simms have a future past this season for the titans?
Paul Kuharsky (3:51 PM)
Probably. But he could be on the open market...
Jessica (Indianapolis)
You don't see Vince has the starter in 09 because he "doesn't change." Just wondering what change you are referring to. His play as a quarterback or his attitude/maturity? Just want to know why you think he doesn't/can't change?
Paul Kuharsky (3:52 PM)
From my vantage point, he hasn't come to terms with the fact that he did anything wrong, hasn't shown appropriate accountability. He thinks it's all good, just V being V...
Aaron
Schwartz has done well the past year and a half. But do you not think that is indicative of the 5 or 6 top-level defenders :Hope, AH, KVB, Finnegan, Thornton, and Griffin (I don't think Bulluck has been all that great this year). When he didn't have much talent, it showed and we were cellar dwellars. He obviously is capitalizing on talented defensive players, but couldn't a lot of DC's...or say Al McGinnis? JS leaving wouldn't signal the apocalypse, but I'd be happy for him to get a HC shot somewhere.
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
It's amazing how good coaches have good players and bad ones have bad players. When he had Lamont Thompson and Randy Starks starting, he was an idiot. Point taken. But losing good people is never a good thing...
Erik (Silver Spring, MD)
Do you think Roydell williams will be playing somewhere in the NFL this year, or any time in the future?
Paul Kuharsky (3:55 PM)
No. List all the WRs the Titans have cut who've caught on anywhere....
Kevin, Boston
Congratulations, you haven't been too obnoxious today-Bosses call you out?
Guy (Round Rock, TX)
I've noticed that some Texans who get traded move on to have much better careers with other teams. Will the Texans be the next Bengals (no disrespect to Bengal fans)?
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
Who?
Nate (Westminster, MD)
I disagree re: Ahmard Hall's touches taking away from CJ. More than four touches and he should (clearly) be biting into Lendale's touches--reason being that Ahmard is more the bruiser type back that Lendale is touted to be, so they should use them in that similar fashion. Don't give Hall the ball near the goal line, though--that man is just so fun to watch blocking!
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
He's a FB not a TB. A couple touches are a nice surprise and changeup. More and you are changing what he is/ does...
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
Paul- DMase....
Paul Kuharsky (3:59 PM)
Salary cap cut. I meant cut for lack of talent. Sorry I wasn't clearer. Joel Filani, Coutney Roby, Tyrone Calico -- those guys don't go on to success elsewhere. The whole league knows the Titans missed on them...
Paul (Raleigh NC)
If teams are in need of Recievers is anyone looking at former Detroit recieves Charles Rodgers and Mike Williams?
Paul Kuharsky (3:59 PM)
Why on earth would anyone look at Mike Williams? Failing for three teams hasn't been enough?
Mike (Arizona)
Hey Paul, thanks for taking this question! Do you have any thoughts on Torrain's return to San Deigo? Do you think with the plethora of RB's they are circulating in and out he'll have any fantasy value?
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
I'd steer clear of them because of the unpredictability. But if you can grab him, do...
Matt (IN)
I don't seem to understand why the Colts D--even minus Bob, who looked hurt to me even in game one this year--has not improved the tackling. It is VERY similar to what we saw in 2006. A big part of the problem that year was Gilbert Gardner, who was just a horrible tackler. This year you have Clint Session playing that slot and although he has a lot of potential and I hate to throw him under the bus, I think he's a big part of the problem. He over pursues and leaves holes where there shouldn't be any. The individual stats may not have shown it, but I think when Tyjuan Hagler comes back you'll see an improvement there. Well, I hope so anyway!
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
I agree that Hagler will help...
Tim (Philly)
The Eagles have not been so great. how do u think they will end up?
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
I think they will be in the top three teams in that division...
Paul Kuharsky (4:02 PM)
Folks, I enjoyed it. Hit the mailbag any time. Spread the word about the chat -- same time and place every week. Cheers!
