Pat: The Saints' safeties got beat multiple times against the Vikings - even in sure 3rd down passing situations. Is this a scheming problem, or are Harper - and especially Kaesviharn - not playing at proper depth and/or with proper technique on 3rd and forever?
Pat Yasinskas (1:00 PM)
Little bit of all that. Kaesviharn's not a great cover guy by any means and coaching schemes -- all around this team -- leave room for questions.
Chris: Charlotte, NC
Hi Pat. Looking at the teams that are ranked higher than the Panthers, do you think that there is a team that the Panthers can't beat or would have a difficult time with?
Pat Yasinskas (1:02 PM)
The way the Panthers play, they're going to be in the game with anybody. Not saying they would be everybody, but they have the potential to beat anybody.
Matt in Atlanta
I live in the ATL but I grew up in NC and have been a diehard Carolina fan since the teams inception. My question is will the team ever invest in a quality back-up or does Josh McCown have the ability to become a solid back-up. My belief is they should have played him earlier in the game for experience. We have a recent history of bringing in bad back-ups (David Carr basically stole $3 Million form us). Are they ever goign to invest in a proven back-up like a Todd Boumann or keep the same method of going after mid-level to decent back-ups. We did it with Jake and it worked out great but can it happen again.
Pat Yasinskas (1:03 PM)
They had that idea with David Carr. Obviously, it was a disaster. But, at the time they made the move, a lot of people thought it was a good move. I think that's scared them off spending big money on a backup. But McCown's not bad and Moore's got potential.
GC (Philadelphia)
Trivia question: Since the re-alignment in 2002, what division has sent the most teams to conference championships? What division has sent each member to a conference championship? Why does this division get NO love from the national media? In between the 7 stories on the cowboys grooming habits, I think I caught the Panthers score in the bottom ticker last week on SportsCenter.
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
Take a look on our NFL page. I just wrote a column (posted about an hour ago) about the strength of the NFC South. My argument is it's second-best in NFL right now.

Will the Saints beable to rebound after such a Heartbreaking lose
Pat Yasinskas (1:05 PM)
They've got the Raiders coming to town, so that should help. They've got to win this game with trips to Carolina and London coming up.
ray gordon reid pascagoula ms 39568
question to pat wasinkas at 1.05 pm hi pat do you see tennessee losing sunday
Pat Yasinskas (1:05 PM)
No.
Robert (North Carolina)
Interesting chat from yesterdays TB mailbag. Here are the highlights. Guy 1:Cadillac has proven that, when healthy and behind a decent offensive line, he is one of the most dangerous backs in the NFL. Guy 2:He has never played a full season. He will never be "Healthy". He is a back-up quality RB at best if he is healthy. I could type a list at least 50 long of guys drafted since Cadillac with better stats...he is, at best, only the 8th best RB in the division behind Graham, Turner, Norwood, RBush, Duece Mccallister, JStew, and DeAngelo Williams The whole thing is in the comments from yesterdays mailbag...The question is what are your thoughts on this?
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
If he's healthy, Cadillac's a pretty darn good back and better than 8th in the division. But it's pretty pointless to argue his case right now because he's not healthy. And I don't think you'll see him on the field until next year.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
The Panthers run defense is playing very good and you figure the Panthers will force Garcia to beat them, but what weapons do they have to match up with the Panthers secondary?
Pat Yasinskas (1:08 PM)
That's been the problem with Bucs offense. They don't have a great receiver with Galloway hurt. Antonio Bryan'ts been good at times, but nobody else has really stepped up.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Pat, will the Falcons offense get some things done this week and beat Chicago?
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
They'll get some things done, but I won't go as far as to say they'll beat the Bears. It could happen, sure, but that's an awfully good defense.
Chris (Madison, WI)
There has been a lot of talk about the Wildcat formation. Wouldn't this be the prefect use of those hybrid WR/QB guys out of college like Brad Smith, or eventually Pat White or even if he comes back to the NFL, Mike Vick? You could bring these guys out every once in a while as a change of pace and yet not completely abandon the threat of the pass.
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
Yes, that all makes sense. But the element of surprise is important. If you know somebody's got that capability, you're going to game plan for it.
Jon (Harrisburg, PA)`
Pat, I asked a former colleague Scott Fowler this question, but why don't the Panthers ever run the reverse with Smitty, but rather than run it...have him stop and throw a pass to a wide open Moose or Jarrett??? Your thoughts?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
Have you seen him throw the ball? There might be a reason why he plays receiver.
Chris in South Carolina
Hey Pat, Can you see Jonathan Stewart winning Rookie of The Year with the way he's been running?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
Yes, but I could also see Matt Ryan winning it.
Paul (Augusta)
Saw an interesting stat on Falcons running over left tackle...first in the league and that position is manned by a rookie...What have you seen from Sam Baker so far?
Pat Yasinskas (1:12 PM)
Better than I expected. A lot of people questioned the Falcons moving up to draft him. But, so far, he's played very well and he'll only get better.
David: (Louisiana)
What is up with the terrible scheduling for the Saints? Not only do we have to play a team coming off a bye on a short week but we don't have another "home" game until the end of November.
Pat Yasinskas (1:14 PM)
Yes, it's brutal. That's why they have to get a win against Oakland and get to 3-3. That would keep their heads above water. The good side is they've got a bye after London and the schedule gets easier after that.
Hamdi, Charlotte, NC
Pat, do you think this year's Panthers team is going to be better at living up to the hype than previous years. We all know that they always thrived at being an underdog, but it would always kill me when they would suffer a letdown against teams they're supposed to beat. I hope this year is different.
Pat Yasinskas (1:14 PM)
I think this team is set up a lot better than the recent teams that disappointed. More depth all around.
Paul (Augusta)
Given the strength of the NFC East this early on, it seems that the NFC south teams have to win the division to make the playoffs. What record do you think is a minimum for winning this division?
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
10-6
Will J (Portland, OR)
Is the Vikings defense that stout against the run? New Orleans only combined for 22 rushing attempts (6 for Deuce), yet the week before Deuce had 20 by himself? What gives?
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
Yes, Minnesota's run D is outstanding. I saw them shut down Carolina, too.
Adam ( Columbia)
Panthers fan here. I know there is a lot of football left to play this year, but with the panthers at 4-1 and bucs at 3-2 do you think a win against tampa would be a huge leap in winning the divison since they have to come play us in carolina next?
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
Yes, absolutely. This game could give Panthers some separation, depending also on what Saints and Falcons do.
HJ (New Orleans)
Hi Pat. I'm sure I speak for many fans here when I say we all love Reggie's dynamics he brings to the game but why is it so hard for Payton to let Deuce back into the offense full-time? With Bush and Deuce on the same field, we would go back to the successful formula which worked in 2006.
Pat Yasinskas (1:18 PM)
Only thing I can figure is Payton sees Deuce in practice every day and doesn't believe he has as much left as the rest of us do.
Paul (Augusta)
Do you have any info on Dominique Foxworth? He hasn't had much playing time and allowed a touchdown last week late to Green Bay, but what, if anything, does he bring to the D for the Falcons?
Pat Yasinskas (1:19 PM)
I know his repuation in Denver was for being a very smart guy. But not a great physical talent.
RJ (Tampa, FL)
Will Dexter Jackson still be returning kickoff's? What is your take on his ability to improve as the year goes on? Is he just toon far behind the curve as far as playiong on the NFL level to make it?
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
I actually think Dexter can be good. Love his speed. Bucs coaches think he can be good, just has to trust his blocking more.
Nick (NO)
Right now, with the way he is playing, is Drew Brees the favorite to win MVP? He has thrown for 300+ yards in three straight games and has done this without his best receiver, Colston. Without him, I believe the Saints would not be competitive in any of their games.
Pat Yasinskas (1:21 PM)
He'd have to be considered and I agree with you on his value to Saints. But they've got to win some games, if he's going to get an award like that.
Jason, PA
PY, If Garcia has success the rest of this season is there any possibility that he would still re-sign with Tampa given all that's gone down this season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:21 PM)
My guess is Garcia would want out of there, even if they wanted him back.
James (LA)
Do you think the two NFC wildcards will have to have over 10 wins?
Pat Yasinskas (1:22 PM)
Yes
Jon, Bristol, TN
Pat, I know the panthers tried to load up this for this year, but do they have potential to sign their three big free agents? (Gross, Gamble, Pep)
Pat Yasinskas (1:22 PM)
I'm guessing two of the three.
Gruden (Tampa Bay)
Pat, the Panthers D. really scares me. Are they as legit as they look or am I just over reacting?
Pat Yasinskas (1:23 PM)
Jon, you know they're legit. Secondary's outstanding, so are LBs and the D-line's playing better than anybody expected.
Greg (Atlanta)
What's your take on the future of the Falcons secondary. I have no feel for the potential of Chevis Jackson and DeCoud. Is the secondary just young and inexperienced so we can expect them to be the future, or are the players of the future not on the present team?
Pat Yasinskas (1:24 PM)
Chevis Jackson's got a future. But I think the secondary definitely will be upgraded in the offseason.
John Fox (Carolina)
Pat, the Bucs D. really scares me. Are they as legit as they look or am I just over reacting?
Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)
John, you make every defense sound like it's great. But your offense is better than it's been in a long time.
Peter Griffin (Quahog)
Have you heard? Oh, really? You haven't heard? I thought everyone had heard... That the b-b-bird, BIRD IS THE WORD!!! BIRD. BIRD. Bird is the WORD!
Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)
Just passing this one on for the Falcons fans.
John (MS)
Do you think the rookie Mehlhaff come through in game-deciding kicks? I mean the Saints have lost 2 games now on missed 4th quarter FGs.
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
Can't be any worse, right? Thought Saints should have kept him at start of season.
Tod (LA)
The Saints 2-3 start is very disappointing. If the Saints are 4-4 at their bye, can they be NFC South contendors given their remaining schedule?
Pat Yasinskas (1:27 PM)
Yes, if they can scrape to 4-4, they'll be very much in it. But they've got to get injured guys back and play a lot better in second half.
DAVE VA
other team have not done well aginst the panthers in the rushing gamne how do you feel with dunn and e.g runing the ball on sunday ?
Pat Yasinskas (1:28 PM)
It's going to be difficult. It's not like the Bucs have been stretching the defense with their receivers.
Paul (Augusta)
Sorry to flood the comments here, but what is the tie breaker if two teams split the season series 1-1 and finish season with same record both in division and overall?
Pat Yasinskas (1:28 PM)
Don't have it right in front of me, but I'm pretty sure it's conference record.
Jeff (Herndon, VA)
Which NFC South team has the strongest linebacking corps?
Pat Yasinskas (1:29 PM)
Wow, great question. Let me give that a little thought and do a future blog post.
Martin Gramatica (NO)
Pat, why am I on IR? Does it have anything to do with those FGs i missed?
Pat Yasinskas (1:30 PM)
You think???
Sharell (Raleigh, NC)
Is Sean Payton overrated as a coach? His stupid onside kick decision on Monday night, bringing in Gramatica and his obession with "pretty plays" than winning games (TB game last year)?
Pat Yasinskas (1:31 PM)
Just had a similar question from Mike in New Orleans. I'll answer you both here. Payton's definitely opened to criticism. His teams isn't very disciplined right now and he's supposed to be a disciplined coach. If the Saints played with any discipline Monday, they would have won.
Alex (Ithaca, NY)
What has impressed you most about Matt Ryan early in his NFL career? It seems even non-Falcons fans are jumping on his bandwagon.
Pat Yasinskas (1:32 PM)
I'll tell you what's impressed me and this goes beyond the basic physical tools -- his ability to bounce right up from a big hit.
Jason, PA
"Jeff (Herndon, VA): Which NFC South team has the strongest linebacking corps?" Three words....Brooks, Ruud, June
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
Yes, but I think Carolina and, maybe even Atlanta, are at least in the argument.
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin)
Will Reggie Bush someday become a running back that will rush for over 1,000 yards in a season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
My money would be against it.
tom (boston)
Do you think Colston or Shockey will play this weekend?
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
There are some rumblings Colston might play. We'll see.
Matt (Charlotte, NC)
Which RB tandem will have the better game during the panthers @ Buca game?
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
I'll go with Williams/Stewart.
DAVE VA
DO YOU THINK TAMPA WILL PULL THE TRIGGER ON A BIG TRADE FOR A REC. BEFORE THE TRADE DEADLINE ? FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS THEY HAVE WHAT ARE SOME CHANCE AND IF SO WHO DO YOU THINK?
Pat Yasinskas (1:35 PM)
Anything's possible with Bucs. I'm not saying anything definite is going on or anything close to that. But keep an eye on Roy Williams.
Robert (North Carolina)
Will the Panthers ever start using King and Rosario more..they are both very sure handed and although I realize King stays in because he blocks so well, if he is getting 4-5 looks a game it would also effect the pass rush? Witten carves up opponents and frees up a great deal for the rest of the team. Just saying.
Pat Yasinskas (1:36 PM)
I think they're actually looking at the tight ends more than they ever have under Fox this year. Not saying that's a lot, but it's Fox's system and he's not going to blow it up and start over.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Who's playing time will diminsh the most upon the return of Shockey and Colston? Henderson, Moore, or Meachem?
Pat Yasinskas (1:37 PM)
Meachem
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin)
From what you've seen so far this year, although it is still very early.. Who would you say wins the NFC South?
Pat Yasinskas (1:37 PM)
Right now, Carolina. Of course, that could change Sunday.
Thomas(Wellington, Fl)
I have been a huge Carolina Panther fan ever since the team began. My question is do you think the Panthers have a shot at a Super Bowl run this year? And why are they not being recognized as an elite team when they have the 4th best defense and they're offense is clicking on all cylinders.
Pat Yasinskas (1:38 PM)
I think they're starting to be recognized as an elite team.
Mike (New Orleans)
If the Saints make one trade this year for a difference maker, what position should they upgrade? Running back? Safety?
Pat Yasinskas (1:39 PM)
Safety. If you gave Payton another RB, he would use him right anyway.
Alex (Ithaca, NY)
It's great and all that the Falcons have started 3-2, I'm beyond happy as a fan given last year. However, shouldn't everyone calm down? Looking at the rest of their schedule, I see Raiders and Saints as the only potential "should win" games.
Pat Yasinskas (1:40 PM)
Yes, but did you see the Packers as a "should-win" game? I agree there are some bumps coming, but I think the Falcons can win another game or two that they shouldn't.
Tom (Moustacheville)
Will Colston be back this week?
Pat Yasinskas (1:40 PM)
Nothing definite yet. Some rumblings that he might play in a limited role this week.
Jason, PA
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin).............. Hope you're not a Badger's fan, loss number 3 is on it's way!
Pat Yasinskas (1:41 PM)
Yes, Ryan, Jason's right on this one.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Pat, I think the biggest reason the NFC South never gets much love is because each year all the teams seem very talented, but none have established themselves as a dominate team each year. The great unknown is what keeps them from being mentioned with the NFC East squads.
Pat Yasinskas (1:41 PM)
Good point. Take a look on our main NFL page. I just posted a column about the strength of the NFC South.
Sharell (Raleigh, NC)
What is going on with Joey Harrington and the Saints? Can anyone else in the league use him, he seems like a great guy, decent player who never was in the right situation.
Pat Yasinskas (1:42 PM)
He is a great guy and he does have some physical talent. Wish he could land in right situation, but probably won't happen. Saints will probably sign him again and then cut him ...again.
Mike (San Diego, California)
Pat whats the latest on Cadillac, is he gonna be back this season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:43 PM)
I sincerely doubt it. 2009 is more likely.
Earnest Graham (Tampa)
Why don't I get the ball more? I am averaging close to 6 yards a carry, and yet Dunn still gets half my carries? I feel like I am being Garcia'd.
Pat Yasinskas (1:44 PM)
Earnest, ask Gruden about that.
Andre (Greenville, SC)
Hi Pat, Does John Abraham have good chance of winning defensive player of the year. Also do the falcons need to get another wideout to compliment White, Jenkins hasn't really been good over the years.
Pat Yasinskas (1:45 PM)
Abraham's having a great year, but I think he'd really have to finish with a bunch of sacks to have a shot at something like that. I think WR will be an area that's addressed in the offseason.
Robert (North Carolina)
We don't get mentioned because we are small markets and of little national interest. It's Ratings, baby! NOR got attention after Katrina, but otherwise we are relagated to pg 8 even the Panthers Superbowl appearance is more remembered for Mrs. "Nasty Boyz" Jackson halftime show. Show..now that's funny!
Pat Yasinskas (1:47 PM)
Yes, but also, look what's happened in the years Carolina or some of the other NFC South teams were the trendy pick to go to the Super Bowl. And Tampa and Atlanta aren't small markets. For that matter, Carolina's not that small either.
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin)
Jason.. I am a HUGE Badgers fan. Through tough times, and great times. I will be loyal with the Badgers. Along with the Brewers, and Packers. But I don't know.. The Wisconsin band will be back tomorrow. Hopefully they can get the crowd a little energized.
Pat Yasinskas (1:48 PM)
Hopefully, JoPa will be energized, too. Not picking on you Ryan, but I'm a Penn State fan.
Mitch (Wilmington, NC)
What's your opinion of what the Panthers record will be when they hit their bye week??
Pat Yasinskas (1:49 PM)
Two losses.
Dale (Atlanta, GA)
Do you think that Keith Brooking has lost a step. His numbers are WAY down from even last year (which was a dismal year)? What do you think the problem is with Keith?
Pat Yasinskas (1:50 PM)
Wow, amid all the euphoria, you Falcons fans are getting down on Brooking. Yes, he's getting older. But, relax and enjoy the good times.
Jay (SC)
Do you think Usama Young will get playing time for the Saints this weekend in the nickel situations or will it just be Jason David?
Pat Yasinskas (1:50 PM)
Hope so, don't want to see Jason David all over the highlight reels again.
Alex (Ithaca, NY)
Is either Brent Grimes or Chris Houston the real deal? One seems a retread and one is young. Why hasn't the defensive backfield taken a huge step back since losing DeAngelo Hall?
Pat Yasinskas (1:52 PM)
Houston might be all right. Not sold on Grimes. Like I said secondary will be addressed in offseason. Give Abraham and the pass rush credit for protecting secondary so far.
Lee Fayetteville NC
Two losses? which team do you think has the best chance to beat Carolina?
Pat Yasinskas (1:53 PM)
Give me the sked real fast. I don't have it front of me and am not even sure when the bye week is.
tom (boston)
What are your predictions of all the NFC South games this weekend?, including scores.
Pat Yasinskas (1:53 PM)
I leave that up to the Swami and our tv guys.
Tom Brady (New England)
Pat, would just like to say that pre-season SB picks rarely make it that far.
Pat Yasinskas (1:54 PM)
Excellent point.
Mitch (Wilmington, NC)
Two losses in the next 3 weeks or overall 2 losses?
Pat Yasinskas (1:54 PM)
Overall
DAVE VA
Pat tampas Dhas stopped every runing back and held them to bout 66 ypg how do you feel about this sunday ? you think we do some damage ?
Pat Yasinskas (1:55 PM)
Yes, you've got a balanced offense. That prevents a D from loading up too much on Smith or the running game.
Lee Fayetteville NC
We play Tampa NO and Arizona. NO and Arizona at home.
Pat Yasinskas (1:56 PM)
I'll stick with two overall.
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin)
Should Sean Payton be on the hot seat if this year results into another below 500 year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:57 PM)
I think so. But the problem is he just got a new 5-year contract, so it would take a total disaster for him to get fired.
Jim (Daytona)
You said in your most recent blog post that Mike Smith is the best coach no one knows about yet, what makes you say that?
Pat Yasinskas (1:58 PM)
Very old-school, basic guy. Players like him a lot because they understand what he wants out of them. He assembled a great staff of assistants. Reminds me a lot of John Fox when he first came to Carolina.
Tyson from Atlanta, Ga
Hey Pat, Why do tha falcons never get respect?. Everyone predicted that we will be lucky to even win 1 game this season. we win 3 games and we hear "you beat bad teams you are supposed to beat". And I thought everyone said we were the worst. Atlanta can never get respect and can never earn it, why is that?
Pat Yasinskas (1:59 PM)
I think they're getting respect now. Think back to the perception of them at the start of the season and what it is now?
Chris (Asheboro, NC)
Will Gross or Otah play this weekend? Thanks.
Pat Yasinskas (1:59 PM)
It sounds pretty encouraging, but you never know until Sunday with Fox and the way he handles injuries.
tommy Land O'Lakes, Florida
Who do you think has the better defense going into sunday's game between tampa and the panthers?
Pat Yasinskas (2:00 PM)
Man, that's a tough one. They're both very good. If you demand an answer right now, I'll give Carolina a slight edge.
Allen [Atlanta]
Out of curiosity, do you ever spend any time on the different teams message boards?
Pat Yasinskas (2:01 PM)
No, why?
Robert (North Carolina)
Carolina better win as much as they can now because they will have the much tougher 2nd half sked...@ GBay, Tampa, Denver, @ NYG, and @ New Orleans...but thankfully they will have to fight to the end even if they back in. Resting players because you locked it up is the kiss of death for playoff teams.
Pat Yasinskas (2:02 PM)
Always best to have momentum with you.
Ryon (Kenosha, Wisconsin)
Is there any player in the NFC South that best reminds you a little bit of Reggie White?
Pat Yasinskas (2:03 PM)
That would be a stretch. But Gaines Adams has a chance to be pretty darn good. Couple more questions and I've got to run.
Allen [Atlanta]
Just to get a feel for what the "fans" are thinking?
Pat Yasinskas (2:03 PM)
I think I get a dose of that here each week and in my mailbag every day.
Jeff (Herndon, VA)
Can Chris Harris make it to the Pro-bowl this season? I think he got cheated last season. Much better stats than Roy Williams.
Pat Yasinskas (2:04 PM)
Yes. Panthers are winning and he's getting a lot of attention.
nav gill
Do you think that john gruden needs to give the ball to earnest grahm 25 rushes against carolina this week?
Pat Yasinskas (2:04 PM)
Yes, I think so, but that doesn't mean Gruden will do it.
Daniel Tampa FL
If the Bucs win with Garcia this weekend, will he remain the starter?
Pat Yasinskas (2:05 PM)
Yes, until they lose again.
mike kc,mo
do you think there will be any trades this week?
Pat Yasinskas (2:05 PM)
Not very many, if any at all.
Adam (Jersey)
Atlanta can earn respect if they start winning games in the division...
Pat Yasinskas (2:07 PM)
Adam says it pretty well. All right, I've got to run. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoyed it.
