Rob Neyer (4:38 PM)
Game 3 will begin in a moment, so why not discuss the affair now?
Adam J. Morris (Houston, Texas)
MLB scheduled 1 game apiece on Saturday and Sunday. But on Monday, they decided we needed two games, with one of them being scheduled in the middle of the day so that most of the country is working during most of the game. Why does Bud Selig hate us?
Rob Neyer (4:39 PM)
Bud Selig doesn't hate us, but he does love TV networks, and that's who schedules the games.
Steve (Tallasee, Alabama)
Will the cold weather in Boston affect the Rays playing baseball?
Rob Neyer (4:39 PM)
It's a "crisp 60 degrees" at Fenway, which is fine baseball weather.
Kyle (Portland, Oregon)
Rob, would you start Beckett again. I mean, if you're the manager and Beckett tells you he's healthy, do you start him, or believe what your eyes have told you?
Rob Neyer (4:40 PM)
I'd be inclined to start Byrd instead. But the Red Sox do have various machines for measuring a pitcher's health and strength, and presumably they're using them.
Charlie (Bethesda, MD)
Nobody thought Lester would be THIS good. Was he flukey great this year and he'll just be really good most of the time? Or is he a perennial Cy Young candidate?
Rob Neyer (4:41 PM)
He has to negotiate the usual minefields, and his strikeout rate doesn't yet suggest to me a perennial Cy Young candidate. But he should be real good for a while. Oh, and he needed only five pitches to retire the Rays in the first.
Brian (Warwick, RI)
Why do you think Tito Francona is unwilling to play Sean Casey?
Rob Neyer (4:46 PM)
He's a poor defensive first baseman, but he's a better hitter than Kotsay and I'm surprised Francona hasn't found a few at-bats for him already.
Kevin (Denver)
Pedroia is a machine!
Rob Neyer (4:48 PM)
He's certainly a machine if you throw a mid-90s fastball into the middle of the strike zone. That might have been a homer if not for the wind.
Chris (Charlottesville, VA)
Why was I so stupid about Pedroia? All offseason I was thinking "trade him at his peak"!
Rob Neyer (4:49 PM)
It's rarely smart to trade a player so young and so talented.
Ron (Northfield,VT)
Do you think the AL MVP is between Youk and Pedroia?
Rob Neyer (4:50 PM)
Perhaps. Depends on how many voters sent in their ballots before the Twins were knocked out by the White Sox. I happen to think K-Rod might sneak in and win the thing.
Rob Neyer (4:50 PM)
Ortiz strikes out looking on a pitch that was two or three inches off the plate. And Buck Martinez says, "I love that" because it's consistent. Huh.
Kevin (Dallas)
Rob, I know Beckett struggled in his first 2 games, but I am suprised to see you say you would start Paul Byrd instead. Do you really think he is still injured?
Rob Neyer (4:52 PM)
I don't know. What I do know is that you can't have it both ways. If he's really the greatest postseason pitcher ever -- as many have said -- then there must be something wrong with him.
Patrick (Cambridge)
I'm assuming that you watch the game live as well as look at Espn's GameCast? How accurate are the ball v. strike calls that we see on GameCast?
Rob Neyer (4:53 PM)
Actually, I don't look at GameCast often; my chatting interface is a special page. But I'll open up GameCast and check the next time there's a close one.
Michael (Cedar Rapids, IA)
I must say though with the Rays being so young they have defiantly stepped up to the plate and shown their resiliance. Especially this rookie Longoria who I think is going to be good for a very long time.
Rob Neyer (4:56 PM)
Agreed, and I'll also mention that there's no evidence that experience really matters in the postseason.
Vinny (St. Petersburg,FL)
Rob, with the way Kazmir has been stuggling, do you think Maddon rethinks his rotation?
Rob Neyer (4:59 PM)
Anything's possible, but Kazmir is pretty obviously better than Edwin Jackson. If he's healthy you have to keep throwing him out there, though you might give him a shorter leash than usual.
Tim (Roslindale, MA)
Do you believe Tampa has the funds nesscesary to retain these great young players?
Rob Neyer (5:00 PM)
Sure, at least in the short term. I don't think they'll lose a single key player next year, or the year after that. Long-term they're going to have some tough decisions, but that's true of most teams.
Brad (Tampa)
If Tampa wins against Lester, does Boston have a chance in this series? Go Tampa!
Rob Neyer (5:04 PM)
Of course they would have a chance. But it would obviously be an uphill climb, considering the questions about Beckett.
James (Providence, RI)
Rob, given the decidedly lackluster nature of Jason Varitek's hitting performance throught this season, do you see him as staying on this Red Sox roster beyond this postseason?
Rob Neyer (5:05 PM)
My guess? They'll try to bring him back in a reduced role, but he'll find a team that wants him to play almost every day.
Andy (Madison, WI)
Speakingof painful decisions, and often these wind up in addition by subtraction, I think that the Brewers may be better off by trading Fielder for pitching and not resigning Sheets. Is CC that interested in staying in Milwaukee that they have a real chance to sign him?
Rob Neyer (5:07 PM)
Sabathia and Sheets are gone, and the Brewers may have to retrench in 2009. But I agree that they should trade Fielder for pitching, and if they do, they could be pretty good again in '10.
Chris (Cambridge, MA)
If Varitek goes elswhere next year, who do the Red Sox find to fill his shoes?
Rob Neyer (5:08 PM)
I don't know, but the Rangers have way too many catchers. Might be a deal there.
Jared (Omaha)
Is Jason Bay really as good as he has looked in the post-season?
Rob Neyer (5:10 PM)
Pretty close. Aside from an oddly down 2007, Bay's been a fantastic hitter since the day he arrived in the majors.
Jason (Indiana)
Do you think the four teams still playing are the four best teams in MLB?
Rob Neyer (5:12 PM)
I don't. I suppose it's hard to remember now, but the Cubs spent six months proving they were one of the four best teams in the majors.
Jason (H-Town)
I do believe that the two teams that are playing in the ALCS are the two best teams.
Rob Neyer (5:13 PM)
So do I.
matt (Clarksville, tn)
Do you think that the National League even compares to the American League?
Rob Neyer (5:14 PM)
No, I don't. If the Cubs are No. 4, it's just barely.
Tom (Philly)
Varitek will go deep
Rob Neyer (5:15 PM)
Seems unlikely, but on the other hand he did really well in Diamond Mind's simulation of this series. Can't imagine why ...
Jeff (Seattle)
So if the Bosox and Rays are one and two, Cubs four, who is number three?
Rob Neyer (5:16 PM)
White Sox or Angels. Or Blue Jays.
whitney (tally)
so much for varitek going deep...haha
Rob Neyer (5:17 PM)
Hey, that was a fantastic pitcher, either right on the inside edge (GameCast) or an inch off (PitchTrax).
Brent (SLC)
The best team in the NL at the end of the season was the Dodgers. They were far better than the White Sox.
Rob Neyer (5:18 PM)
Yes, but they do play for six months. Also, I think if you check you'll find that the Phillies were actually better down the stretch than the Dodgers.
Chris (Philly)
Should I be petrified by the prospect of Moyer possibly starting a game 7?
Rob Neyer (5:19 PM)
Well, as a fan I certainly wouldn't blame you. But he's capable of coming back and pitching six solid innings.
Sharbel (Chicago)
Moyer won't start another game this postseason. Where Kyle Kendrick at??
Rob Neyer (5:20 PM)
Not sure, but I think Happ would make more sense if Moyer's out.
Dave (Orlando)
I can almost hear the Bartlett-for-ALCS-MVP chants starting already. A ringing single!
Rob Neyer (5:23 PM)
Actually a ringing double off the Wall. And Lester's in big trouble here.
J (Sunny South Florida)
BJ Upton 3 run hr. You heard it hear first
Rob Neyer (5:24 PM)
I suspect Lester's going to be extra-careful because of what Upton's been doing lately.
Simon (TX)
How good could BJ Upton be, and who will be better him or his brother?
Rob Neyer (5:25 PM)
I don't see the ceiling yet for either of them. B.J. was excellent this year despite an injury that sapped his power for much of the season. And Justin's still a baby.
Rich (St. Pete, Florida)
nice call J!
Rob Neyer (5:27 PM)
Yeah. Wow! Upton hit that over the Monster and over the Monster seats. It was a high fastball down the middle, and Upton knows how to turn a fastball around. Did I say wow? And Lester hasn't lost a game at home since May...
Sam (Caldwell)
I am surprised at how this game is going for Lester so far. He has been so dominant this post season, like Beckett was last year
Rob Neyer (5:27 PM)
True, but it's always worth remembering that the guys on the other team are incredibly talented, too.
Brittany (Indiana)
What I love about these two teams is that even though Tampa has a large lead, you know the Sox can get back in it and there's always a feeling that each game could be an epic battle like game 2.
Rob Neyer (5:30 PM)
One doesn't get the feeling that four runs is going to win this one.
Chris Harris (Winthrop, Me)
Warm someone up!
Rob Neyer (5:31 PM)
I have to say, I didn't think Longoria got all of that one. But he hit it into the second row of the Monster seats in left-center. Another high fastball, just like the one Upton hit. And the bullpen's stirring ... Paul Byrd.
chris (madison)
So that's 5 HRs this postseason for BJ after hitting only 8 all regular season...
Rob Neyer (5:33 PM)
Right. But again, he was suffering from a shoulder injury for most of the season. When healthy he's going to hit 20-25 homers and draw 100 walks, might become the new Carlos Beltran (though not quite with Beltran's glove).
Daniel (New York)
How much will it hurt Boston to reach into the bull pen this early? Think that they have the staff to hold up?
Rob Neyer (5:34 PM)
Sure, because Byrd can go three or four if he's not getting hammered.
John (OR)
I'm not watching the game on TV. Was that first pitch really right down the middle and called a ball?
Rob Neyer (5:36 PM)
No, it was an inch or two outside. But it looked weird because of how Varitek caught it.
Vin (VT)
Rob - news from StL: Pujols just had elbow surgery. About time.
Rob Neyer (5:37 PM)
Yeah. Makes you wonder what he'll do when he's healthy.
Jared (Omaha)
Rob, do you think the Rays are out of line for cheering at home plate after each win?
Rob Neyer (5:39 PM)
I think it's churlish to hold exuberance against a young team.
MourningHalo (OC)
How has Garza looked thus far? His pitch count looks reasonable, but 3 hits in 2 innings could spell trouble. I'm stuck on the web at the office, no TV.
Rob Neyer (5:40 PM)
He's throwing hard and his control's been pretty good ... Not sure what else you'd want.
Patrick (MA)
Dustin Pedroia really hates that wall.
Rob Neyer (5:43 PM)
Man, he just ripped that one. Just like in the first inning, except this one was lower and harder so he had to stop at first. There's just no point in throwing him a fastball when he knows it's coming.
Mathew (Stanwood)
Watching these two teams with excellent GMs, it makes me wonder if Seattle ever has a chance of fielding a winner with their front office. Am I delusional?
Rob Neyer (5:44 PM)
No, but it's at least theoretically possible that they'll hire their own excellent GM this winter.
Mike (PA)
How can that ball be hit that far and only be a single? Im stuck with Gamecast and no TV... the monster must have really stopped that one.
Rob Neyer (5:45 PM)
Yup. When I used to go to all the games and keep score, I called that a "Fenway single".
Michael (Midwest)
Wow...quite an AB for Ortiz!
Rob Neyer (5:48 PM)
Yeah, and that was almost quite a catch by Longoria; would have been an out if not for the temporary camera bay.
Paul (Kittery, ME)
How much longer do you think it will be untill they start building a new ballpark in Boston
Rob Neyer (5:50 PM)
I don't think that's even a gleam in the back of someone's mind yet. So it's impossible to make even a WAG.
Mike (Arkansas)
Great pitching by Garza...amazing to get out of that inning.
Rob Neyer (5:53 PM)
Not sure if I'd go that far, but yes he pitched well, again. He's at 56 or 57 pitches through three innings, so it's not likely he'll pitch into the seventh.
Aaron Wise (TAMPA FL)
it would be great to see the Tampa Bay Rays and Bucs win championships this year and next....
Rob Neyer (5:57 PM)
You mean the Pirates? Yeah, that would be great. But they don't have enough young talent yet.
Daniel (MA)
I think he meant Tampa Bay Bucs ... as in football Rob.
Rob Neyer (5:59 PM)
What would be great about that? Now the Vikings winning ... That would be great!
Tom (Tampa, FL)
What is the atmosphere in Fenway like right now?
Rob Neyer (6:00 PM)
I'm 3,000 miles away, Tom. Bu the crowd seems fairly quiet. Being down five will do that, usually.
MJ (Orlando)
sad and mopey with a chance for tears
Rob Neyer (6:01 PM)
That too.
jon (Nj)
it doesn't even matter wether the Red Sox lose this game they can come back from any number of games down to win which they have already proven
Rob Neyer (6:02 PM)
Yes, they can. I do seem to recall them getting swept by the White Sox a few years ago. Nobody's good enough to win every time.
Harris ((St. Louis))
Its 5:03 Monday evening, the favorite to win the world series is...
Rob Neyer (6:04 PM)
Rays. By a significant lot.
Sean Wils (NYC)
I am so tired of the Red Sox winning everything. This would be so great for baseball if the Dodgers or the Rays win the world series. Don't you agree Rob?
Rob Neyer (6:06 PM)
Why the Dodgers and not the Phillies? I'm not sure how we measure these things, but in rough order of "good for baseball": Rays beat Dodgers, Rays beat Phillies, Dodgers beat Red Sox, Phillies beat Red Sox, Red Sox beat Dodgers, Red Sox beat Phillies. (Did I miss anything?)
Dan (Boston)
Rob, your thoughts on the Sox signing Sabathia, and trading Buchholz as the centerpiece of a godfather offer to the Dodgers for Russell Marin?
Rob Neyer (6:09 PM)
I think they'll be talking to Sabathia's agent, along with a dozen other teams. As for Martin, who's going to catch for the Dodgers? By the way, the Rays haven't blown a five-run lead this year: 36-0.
Craig (NYC)
You missed Phillies beat Rays. And Dodgers beat Rays. Unless you're saying that Rays don't lose to the NL champ.
Rob Neyer (6:11 PM)
Oh, right. Slot those wherever you like.
steve (boston)
who do you think is the most overrated team in baseball?
Rob Neyer (6:12 PM)
That was pretty obviously the Angels throughout the second half of the season. All due respect.
Ryan (San Jose)
Any chance of us seeing Barry next year?
Rob Neyer (6:14 PM)
No.
Paul (Kittery, ME)
Do you think Barry will end up in Cooperstown, NY?
Rob Neyer (6:17 PM)
Yes. But he might have to wait a while, to the point where I can imagine him not attending the ceremony.
Justin (IN)
I'm in class right now, so just watching gamecast. Did Upton reach first on an error or what?
Rob Neyer (6:19 PM)
Upton reached on grounder up the middle off Lester's glove. Then with the big shift on, Pena laid down a beautiful bunt. Problem was, Upton was too aggressive rounding second and Youkilis nailed him (play wasn't close).
ksully (chicago)
Why does it show Pena on second?
Rob Neyer (6:20 PM)
Because he stole second on Lester's next pitch.
Evan Leech (Indiana)
do ou believe jon lester is only still in this game because Terry Fancona wants to save the Bull pen as much as possible? Especially with this game beginning to look out of hand for the red sox
Rob Neyer (6:22 PM)
I believe Francona has a pretty good feel for sample size, and figured there wasn't really anything wrong with Lester, just made a few lousy pitches the Rays didn't miss. And he has pitched well enough since the third.
Chris (Shingle Springs)
Is Tim McCarver calling the game? If so, please keep up abreast of his latest gems. Has he somehow worked Jeter in the broadcast?
Rob Neyer (6:22 PM)
Nope. This is TBS: Chip Caray, Buck Martinez, Ron Darling.
Pierre (San Francisco)
When is the Cy Young announced?
Rob Neyer (6:25 PM)
The second week after the World Series, I believe. First week is Manager of the Year and Rookie of the Year, second week is Cy Youngs and MVPs.
Tom Doherty (MA)
Who are your picks for the two winners of the Cy Young, Rob?
Rob Neyer (6:26 PM)
Lee and Lincecum. But I can definitely see a case for Lidge.
Jeff (Baltimore)
Wow, this is horrible Rob (for us Red Sox fans, obviously). With Sonnastine coming up tomorrow, this game could be the series. Sonnastine has dominated Boston. Do you think the Red Sox losing this game puts them in a MAJOR hole from which they might not be able to climb out?
Rob Neyer (6:29 PM)
In six career starts against the Red Averages, Sonnanstine is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA. But if he keeps the ball in the park he's got a good shot, as he won't issue many walks.
Jason (Boston)
Can you please stop saying Francona is a good manager? Because he isn't. He has gotten lucky, and he has had great teams that refused to lose. They won despite of him, not because of him.
Rob Neyer (6:31 PM)
Maybe, but not giving credit to a manager of a team like the Red Sox would be a modern first, I think.
Frank (SF)
They cannot get DP out.
Rob Neyer (6:35 PM)
It's funny, the guys on TV are on Garza for not throwing Pedroia a fastball. But he tried that before, and the results were two line drives off the Wall. Granted, with Papi coming up maybe you take your chances with Pedroia ... But pitchers have short memories.
Matt (Reno, NV)
How does Ortiz's swing look today? Saturday it looked awful.
Rob Neyer (6:36 PM)
Garza just keeps on throwing inside fastballs and Ortiz just keeps on popping them up.
Peter (Boston)
What would you offer Varitek for a contract if you were Theo Epstein?
Rob Neyer (6:37 PM)
$5M for one season or $9M for two.
Drew (NYC)
Can you tell me in which categories Lincecum has better stats than Johan Santana?
Rob Neyer (6:37 PM)
Strikeouts and innings, I'm guessing. Those are two pretty big ones.
Jeff (Seattle, WA)
Rob, Who is your Rays MVP this year?
Rob Neyer (6:39 PM)
Upton by a nose over Pena, though Longoria would be the obvious choice if he hadn't spent time in Triple-A and on the DL.
Dan (St. Louis)
Who is the NL MVP this year?
Rob Neyer (6:41 PM)
No idea, really. I guess if I have to guess I'll guess Pujols, or MannyB. But this might be the interesting balloting we've ever seen.
Pat (Seattle)
On Lincecum/Santana, Rob: yes and no. JS leads in IP -- and ERA, by a fraction.
Rob Neyer (6:44 PM)
Thanks, Pat. I will also note that Lincecum led in H/9, though of course that's all about the strikeouts. He also won two more games than Santana, and the voters will notice that.
Dave (Baltimore)
Rob, I think was saddens me that the Pirates could have drafted Upton but were scared away by his signability and they instead draft Bryan Bullington. Will the union and the owners ever come to terms on these rookie contracts?
Rob Neyer (6:46 PM)
Hard to say, Dave. Just depends on how much the owners want to push. And it's worth mentioning that the Pirates probably should have paid whatever Upton wanted.
Skip ((Madison, WI))
Why is Byrd the choice instead of Wakefield?
Rob Neyer (6:47 PM)
Because Wakefield's supposed to start Game 4 tomorrow night. Right?
Gavin (CO)
garza still in....whats the pitch count?
Rob Neyer (6:51 PM)
He's closing in on 95. I think this is probably his last inning.
Herb (garden)
do you see Wheeler making an appearance in this game, even if it's a save situation in the 9th?
Rob Neyer (6:52 PM)
Sure, why not? He's had a day off and should be good for an inning. Or do you mean if it's not a save situation? No, probably not. Maddon doesn't want to use him, and the other guys should be able to protect this lead.
mark (phoenix)
Do you think O'Nora giving Garza a couple of calls outside the zone early helped him settle in?
Rob Neyer (6:56 PM)
I think it helped him not give up hits, which is even better.
Dave (New York)
The way Garza's cruising through the heart of the order here, don't ya think they should at least let him start the next inning?
Rob Neyer (6:57 PM)
Nah. He's over 100 pitches now, so at best he escapes this inning and gets one out in the seventh. I think Maddon will want his reliever to come in with nobody on.
Mike (Chicago)
Do you think that Upton getting gunned on the over-run will haunt the Rays later?
Rob Neyer (6:59 PM)
It's really, really, really unlikely, Mike. In case you missed it early, the Rays haven't blown a five-run lead all season.
Joe (Portland, OR)
Hey Rob... I know it's probably an unfair question at this time, but what do you think - one season later - about the Delmon Young and Brandon Harris for Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett deal?
Rob Neyer (7:00 PM)
I think what I thought when it happened: Great Deal for Rays.
Alex (Seattle)
In looking at the Rays success, perhaps there is hope for the Mariners...if they can hire a GM with a new plan. In your opinion what kind of shift should Seattle make to be a contender again in the next...decade
Rob Neyer (7:01 PM)
The Mariners bring in enough revenue that they shouldn't have to rebuild for more than two years.
Dave (Philly)
Rob, what do you think about Torre's decision to start Lowe on three days rest?
Rob Neyer (7:02 PM)
I think Torre knows his pitcher better than I do. More generally, I think that some pitchers are capable of pitching effectively on short rest; it's the manager's job to know which ones.
jeff (mesa, az)
Rob who would you expect the Red Sox to send to the hill for game 7?
Rob Neyer (7:04 PM)
Well, it'll be Lester again, right? And why not? Aside from two bad innings he wasn't bad today. It happens.
Tim (San Diego)
What do the Twins have to do to be a true playoff contender? They are the most admirable team in baseball b/c of their amazing farm system and lack of capital. But admirable rarely wins you a ring
Rob Neyer (7:05 PM)
They need another guy who can hit 30 home runs.
James (Tampa)
do you prefer a 5/7/7 or 7/7/7 format for the playoffs?
Rob Neyer (7:07 PM)
I'd like to see 5/7/9. Just like the old days.
Dave (Phoenix)
What is wrong with Varitek? Do you think it might be better to start Cash going forward due to Variteks lack of offense?
Rob Neyer (7:13 PM)
Have you ever looked at Cash's stats, Dave? He's been one of the worst hitters in recent history. At least in the majors.
Musa (Tampa)
Garza is back for one more. Good move by Maddon to save the bullpen for another day.
Rob Neyer (7:15 PM)
I suppose. He is sort of a horse. As long as he doesn't put a couple of guys on base it's cool w/me.
paul (portland)
Why in does Fancona refuse to use pitch hitters?
Rob Neyer (7:17 PM)
Don't most of them? I've noticed Maddon's not exactly quick on the trigger, either.
Paul (New Haven)
Cash may not be good hitter, but right now is he really any worse then Tek?
Rob Neyer (7:18 PM)
Yeah, he is. Anyway, Tek just walked (even with a very questionable called strike). Garza's up to 114 pitches and nobody's up in the bullpen. Umm, Joe ...
Jamey (Los Angeles)
Cool with you??? Are you a Rays fan or do you dislike the Sox?
Rob Neyer (7:18 PM)
I just like to see things done well.
Paul (Irvine)
Get garza OUT! Is the bullpen out for cocktails right now???
Rob Neyer (7:20 PM)
OK, Garza's gone. This game reminds me of Game 1, except Maddon's fooling around with a five-run lead instead of Francona and a two-run lead. In both cases I first-guessed the manager...
Josh (Chi - Town)
What do the Sox need to do in the offseason to stay competetive? A solid starter? A big bat? A set up man in the pen?
Rob Neyer (7:23 PM)
Which Sox? I'm guessing the White Sox ... A second baseman would be nice. And a third baseman if Crede's not back strong.
come on (sox)
yes @ last, a run.....yippee!
Rob Neyer (7:25 PM)
Followed by a nifty double play, thanks to Longo's good feed.
Jared (Dexter, ME)
Hey Rob, think you could cheer for the Rays any harder?
Rob Neyer (7:26 PM)
I absolutely could. I will admit, I'm pulling for the Rays because they're a great story and also because I picked them to win. But it's a very mild pulling, and I'll feel bad for Bill James if the Sox lose.
Ben (Milwaukee)
If the Rays win this game, do you think they'll take that momentum to the World Series?
Rob Neyer (7:29 PM)
I think Josh Beckett's a bigger reason to like the Rays if they win tonight.
Tommy (san Diego)
How much money would MLB lose by having the Rays in the World Series instead of Boston?
Rob Neyer (7:30 PM)
I don't have the slightest idea, but I can't imagine why anyone would care. Either way there's plenty to go around.
Manny (Dominican Republic)
Rob Ive asked you a million questions. Are my questions getting snubbed because my name is Manny and from the D.R. I'm thinking maybe your looking at my name and saying "Hey look at this poser" I won't post his questions. Well my name is Manny and I am from the D.R. I'm not posing as that Manny being Manny!
Rob Neyer (7:31 PM)
I believe you, Manny. But I haven't seen any of your questions. And this one's not a question!
Dave B (Ithaca via DC)
MLB probably makes more money in the long run if the Rays make the World Series, because the Rays will get a huge attendance spike and bring in new fans.
Rob Neyer (7:33 PM)
That may well be true, Dave. It's easy to neglect the longterm effects of such things.
Tyler (Los Angeles, CA)
Why does a team like Colorado not go to the AL West, and move Houston to the NL West to even things out and make every division have 5 teams?
Rob Neyer (7:34 PM)
Because then you'd have interleague games almost every day and MLB doesn't want to do that.
Rob Neyer (7:35 PM)
Game OVER. My friends.
Brad (CA)
Why would Francona use Byrd, a legit plus inning pitcher, in todays game rather then when Beckett went out and it was close?
Rob Neyer (7:36 PM)
I don't know. And I thought Francona might turn to his better relievers when this game got to the eighth. Because Byrd is probably the worst pitcher on the staff. Well, except for Timlin.
Anthony (Atlantic City, NJ)
Would this be the greatest turn-around ever in all of sports if Tampa Bay won it all?
Rob Neyer (7:38 PM)
I can't speak for all of sports, but it would certainly be the greatest turnaround in Major League history.
dan (vineland,NJ)
How would Tampa Ba winning the World Series be good for anybody?
Rob Neyer (7:40 PM)
Two reasons. One, you're creating many thousands of enthusiastic fans in the Tampa Bay area; some of them lifelong fans. And two, you're proving to fans of other low-revenue teams that they really should hope for better times.
Bob (St. Pete, FL)
What would it take for the Rays to maintain the level of play next season?
Rob Neyer (7:42 PM)
We're obviously getting a little ahead of ourselves, but if they're going to stick with Bartlett they probably should try to get a little better in right field. Otherwise -- and with David Price probably moving into the rotation -- they're pretty well set. Which doesn't mean they're a lock to win 95 games. But they'll be plenty competitive.
Rob Neyer (7:43 PM)
P.S. They could add another hitter to fill the DH slot, too.
Al (SF Bay Area)
Remember when the Braves went from 65-97 in 1990 to 95-68 in 1991?
Rob Neyer (7:44 PM)
Fair point, Al. But I was thinking about the totality of the Rays' history. Seven years earlier the Braves had been respectable.
Tyler (Wilton, CT)
The Marlin's World Series wins didn't really do anything for baseball in Florida, so what would make this different?
Rob Neyer (7:47 PM)
We can't know yet if it will be different, Tyler. But the Marlins were one-hit wonders, while the Rays' fans should expect their team to be good for as far as we can see. Granted, even the Rays' owner doesn't know if that will make a difference. But they're going about things the right way.
dan (vineland,NJ)
Why do the experts insist that the Dodgers will beat the Phillies?
Rob Neyer (7:49 PM)
Dan, one thing I've noticed over the years is that experts are attracted to shiny objects. And few were shinier over the last couple of months than Manny Ramirez.
Tom (SF)
How were the Marlins 1 hit wonders? They won two series in 10 years...more than most.
Rob Neyer (7:50 PM)
They won 54 games the season after their first World Series, 83 after their second. In neither season did they make a serious effort to repeat.
Forrest (Asbury Park)
Come on Rob, mix the people up who get the Q's. It always seems these days that the DH gives the AL a big advantage over the NL. Will the NL ever switch?
Rob Neyer (7:51 PM)
Ever? Sure. Anything's possible. But that's another thing that won't even be considered until A.S. (After Selig).
tom (a-town)
its funny u say hes shiny because ryan howard had possibly the best september in the history of baseball
Rob Neyer (7:53 PM)
Let's not let facts get in the way of a good story, tom ... Another HR for the Rays, by the way.
Scott (Seminole, FL)
What's wrong with Kazmir? Physical or mental problem?
Rob Neyer (7:54 PM)
Kazmir's a good pitcher, will continue to be a good pitcher. But this is not a good matchup for him, as he likes to nibble and the Sox don't swing at pitches off the plate. Not often enough for Kazmir, anyway.
Mike (Johnsenville, LS)
I think i have wrote 100 questoins and u still haven't decided to pick one of mine....do you think the rays wil have enough momentum to go into the series against an experienced team like the dodgers?
Rob Neyer (7:55 PM)
Mike, experience is irrelevant. There's simply no correlation between experience and postseason performance.
Ryan (Vancouver, WA)
Will baseball ever have a salary cap?
Rob Neyer (7:56 PM)
Not in the foreseeable future, plus this game we're watching is a loud argument against its necessity.
Ben (Florida)
Do you think the Rays are going to have to fork out the money for their players next year? I would think that after so much sucess, they might want to be 'rewarded' with a little dough (which might dissolve the team)
Rob Neyer (7:59 PM)
It's not going to be an issue, Ben. Whatever raises are given will be paid for by increased revenues next year. It'll be another two or three seasons before the Rays' success catches up to them, cost-wise.
mikeydazzle (boston)
so rob, why do you think the sox are done after being down 2-1
Rob Neyer (8:00 PM)
Who said they're done. I didn't say they're done. You didn't say they're done. What they do have is an uphill climb, particularly if Beckett's not right. But let's play the rest of the games and see.
Harry (Cabo Wabo)
Maybe with a World Series ring fans will actually ATTEND the Rays games next year. If not do you see a possibility of them relocating?
Rob Neyer (8:03 PM)
Yeah, I do. If they don't draw 2.5 million next season they should probably consider their options, especially if a new ballpark's not in the offing soon. But I think they will draw 2.5 million.
Doug (Orlando)
The Rays are getting a new stadium
Rob Neyer (8:05 PM)
Doug, they don't have a deal in place yet. Right now it's just pretty drawings.
redster (montreal)
I can't believe you're falling into MLB's old tactic of "build us a ballpark at taxpayer's expense" or we'll leave...pure blackmail and any City that gives in to that again should be booted out of office ... if you have courage you'll post this
Rob Neyer (8:06 PM)
O ... K ... I've been railing against those deals for years, my friend. Was just laying out the situation on the ground, not making a value judgment.
homer (Bradenton, Fl.)
Rob, do you think the Rays will win the World Sereis?
Rob Neyer (8:08 PM)
I do, Homer. Before the season I believe I had the Dodgers winning the World Series. Before the Division Series I switched to the Red Sox. And before the LCS(s) I switched to the Rays. No reason to switch now.
Joseph (LA)
you judge every1 you are a joke but its pointless you don't have the guts to post with this worried about bad reveiws ill give you a bad review
Rob Neyer (8:08 PM)
Equal time and all that.
Spencer (Maine)
I 've pasted this about a hundred times. I've posted this about a hundred times. What changes will Boston make to its pitching staff if they lose this series?
Rob Neyer (8:10 PM)
Spencer, I don't know that this series has anything to do with their pitching staff next year. The Red Sox strive to make those decisions independently of short-term results (not that they always succeed).
Chris (California)
Do you think Albert Pujols made the right decision opting for surgery?
Rob Neyer (8:12 PM)
I think he knows his elbow better than we do.Thanks for all the questions, wish I could have posted more of them. I'm now going to leave you in the capable hands of Jim Callis, but I'll be back Wednesday night for Game 4. Until then don't forget: "Fate loves the fearless."
Jim Callis (8:15 PM)
Hi, everyone. Hopefully I'll have a better game to chat about than Rob just did. I'm in your hands for the next few hours, then it's back to writing Draft Report Cards for Baseball America.
Kyle (San Francisco)
Whos your pick to win going into the game?
Jim Callis (8:17 PM)
I think the Dodgers will win. I think Lowe goes seven innings and LA prevails by a 5-2 score.
Jim Callis (8:17 PM)
Remind me of that if I'm close to being correct.
JB (Lawrenceville, GA)
What do you think the Dodgers' plans for Andruw Jones since he has so much money left on his contract?
Jim Callis (8:18 PM)
There's not much they can do. They can eat the contract and hope that makes someone willing to take a chance on him. Or they can hope he somehow hits his way back into their lineup next year. Either way, they're going to be on the hook for his contract.
Jason (Seattle)
Watch out, Jim; the natives are restless.
Jim Callis (8:19 PM)
Yeah, I saw that. Seems like some people went off the deep end at the end of Rob's time, if the questions some of you are sending me are any indication.
John (Somers Point, NJ)
I know the Phillies did not impress much in Game 3 but how come everyone is so high on the Dodgers, a team with the 15th best record in baseball?
Jim Callis (8:20 PM)
Because they're not the 15th-best team. They've played a lot better than that in September. I think we have the four teams who are playing the best for the last six weeks or so alive in the playoffs this year.
kc (maryland)
dont you think that boston wishes they still had manny was being manny for them in october?
Jim Callis (8:20 PM)
Jason Bay has done just fine, so I don't think they're sweating it.
Tiffany (New Jersey)
Hey Jim, post a question from a woman...Who do you think has a better chance at a comeback, Dodgers or Red Sox?
Jim Callis (8:20 PM)
The Red Sox, though I think both teams have a good chance. I'm just not sold on Sonnastine shutting down Boston tomorrow, though Wakefield is no lock either.
Coop (Dayton, OH)
Is there anything to learn from the Rays for a "small market team" like my Reds?
Jim Callis (8:21 PM)
I think the lesson for any team is that you can't use other teams' spending as a crutch. It may take some time, but if a team drafts well and trades well and makes good use of the international market, it's possible to win, no matter what your payroll.
Tyler (Los Angeles, CA)
Who get's a home run first? Juan Pierre off the bench, or the struggeling Ryan Howard?
Jim Callis (8:22 PM)
I'll bet on Howard for that one.
Dane ((Princeton, NJ))
Hey Jim, I told my Dad that Manny is in the Top 5 for best hitting Left Fielders of all time. He scoffed and turned away. What do you think?
Jim Callis (8:24 PM)
I'm with you, Dane. I can only come up with three guys I'd take over him: Ted Williams, Barry Bonds and Stan Musial.
Trai (DeLand, FL)
Give me one good reason Longoria is not Rookie of the Year...
Jim Callis (8:24 PM)
I can't. He's going to be the AL Rookie of the Year.
Jason (Seattle)
True about the response about payroll vs. drafting, trades, etc. But a lot of revenue makes it easier to absorb mistakes, which is something small-market teams can't do.
Jim Callis (8:25 PM)
I'm not disputing that. But it's very easy for a small-market club to wail about finances. Look at the clubs that have been bad for a while (take the Pirates and Royals, for instance) and you'll see a litany of bad decisions.
Mike(Utica,NY)
Jim: Longoria or Wieters the next 5 years?
Jim Callis (8:26 PM)
Tough call, I'll go Longoria because he already has a very good big league season under his belt.
Mike (Lynchburg, VA)
How about this... 1. Ted Williams 2. Rickey Henderson 3. Cool Papa Bell 4. Stan Musial 5. Yaz
Jim Callis (8:26 PM)
No, Manny is a much better hitter than Henderson or Yaz or Cool Papa Bell.
Sean (Scranton)
Ive been trying since the second inning to get some ones take on the AL MVP? jeez....
Jim Callis (8:27 PM)
The vote should be all over the place. I'd vote Pedroia, Mauer, Youkilis in that order but you can make a case for any of the three.
Brandon (Tampa)
What did you think about the Rays game tonight a blowout.!
Jim Callis (8:29 PM)
Not much drama in that one. Very impressive performance, obviously. Before that game, Lester was on a roll where I would have picked him over any other pitcher to win a game if I had to have it.
Doug (Orlando)
I'm predicting a Howard HR in the 1st inning
Jim Callis (8:30 PM)
With the way Lowe is going right now, you may be right.
Brandon (Tampa)
Who do you think wins NL MVP
Jim Callis (8:31 PM)
I'd vote for Pujols, and it's not like the Cardinals were way out of contention.
Jim Callis (8:31 PM)
After watching all these shifts in the playoffs, I don't understand why these guys don't bunt for. Carlos Pena laid down a good bunt today. With the way David Ortiz is going, I'd take a couple of bunt singles if the Rays were going to give them to me.
si (valley stream)
If LA goes down 3 to 1, do they come back Jim.
Jim Callis (8:32 PM)
It would be tough, because I don't see them beating Hamels. Certainly not impossible, of course.
Griffin (Windham)
who gets starting spot next season: Lugo or Lowrie?
Jim Callis (8:32 PM)
Lowrie.
Mike (Columbus)
From the way Moyer has pitched in the post season, how much do you think he has left in him?
Jim Callis (8:34 PM)
If I'm the Phillies, I'm not feeling real good about giving Moyer another start. Though I'm not sure they have a better alternative.
Jason (Reading, PA)
What about Happ
Jim Callis (8:35 PM)
You know what, I would hand the ball to Happ.
Jim Callis (8:35 PM)
Nice hustle by Burrell there on the double play. Would it have pained him to at least run that out?
Mike (Lynchburg, VA)
Jim, do you ever see Nomar returning to a form of .280 20 100, ever?
Jim Callis (8:35 PM)
No. I think he's pretty much done.
Glenn (Pleasanton)
How long untill the A's are back playing in October Jim
Jim Callis (8:37 PM)
At least a couple of years. They have an impressive farm system but a lot of holes to fill. Also, the Rangers have a stacked system too and the Angels have talent and money, so the AL West won't be easy.
ryan (idaho)
How do you think blanto will pitch tonight, considering he hasn't done that well against the dodgers in the past
Jim Callis (8:38 PM)
Blanton has a whopping total of three previous starts vs. the Dodgers, and a 3.32 ERA in those starts, which seems well enough to me. Not that a sample size that small matters. He's pretty hittable, I don't think this game is over at all.
Cody (Minnesota)
How do you think the Twins would have done against the Rays in comparison to the White Sox?
Jim Callis (8:40 PM)
I think the Rays would have won that series regardless of the opponent.
kevin (philly)
whats with lowe ripping the shirt off?
Jim Callis (8:40 PM)
It's the shirt's fault he gave up the two runs. He'll be fine now.
Jim Callis (8:41 PM)
Here comes Manny . . .
Frank (Phily)
Is there any chance Manny goes to the Yankees after this year? He seems to be a merc at this point, perfect yankee.
Jim Callis (8:42 PM)
I think Manny will go wherever he gets the most money, plain and simple. Whether Cashman and the Yankees want to make a major investment in a 36-year-old DH remains to be seen.
Matt (Philly)
So pitching to manny is a bad idea, but walking him with one out and and setting up a double play is a bad idea?? I hate Fox's announcers
Jim Callis (8:43 PM)
I don't like the intentional walk either. In the first inning? The best he can do is tie it with a homer. Now a double ties it, don't like that at all.
Mike (New Jersey)
What do you think the Sox should do about Varitek?
Jim Callis (8:44 PM)
Offer him a one-year deal, maybe with a vesting option, not worth more than about $5 million. He adds something to the club with his defensive presence, but his bat looks sloooooooooooooow.
Marc (New York)
Do you think that Blake DeWitt will serve as the Dodgers' future second-baseman (instead of Delwyn Young)?
Jim Callis (8:45 PM)
Over Young, yes. Long term, not sure he's good enough defensively to hold off all comers.
Jim Callis (8:46 PM)
Nice play by Victorino to limit that to one run.
Dane (Princeton, NJ)
Double ties it eh Jim? Manny isn't that fast.
Jim Callis (8:46 PM)
Must not have had much of a secondary lead either.
kyle (boston)
buchholz for russell martin?
Jim Callis (8:47 PM)
I think the Red Sox do that in one second and the Dodgers laugh at that suggestion.
john (Haverhill, Mass)
what do you think of the decision of putting timlin in for julio lugo...
Jim Callis (8:47 PM)
Lugo couldn't have pitched much worse in Game Two.
Greg (Los Angeles)
Russel Martin seems to keep coming up on these chats... do you think the Dodgers would ever trade him away?
Jim Callis (8:48 PM)
No, too hard to find a young catcher with that talent. He's not even close to free agency. The Dodgers already gave up a stud catching prospect (Carlos Santana) this summer who could come back to bite them.
Adam (New Jersey)
Where do you think Cano will end up?
Jim Callis (8:50 PM)
Back with the Yankees. I doubt they'll sell low on him, which is what they'd be doing.
KJ (Stillwater, OK)
Where did Carlos Santana go again?
Jim Callis (8:51 PM)
To the Indians in the Casey Blake trade. In return for getting Cleveland to pick up all of Blake's salary, the Dodgers had to give up a better prospect.
Jim Callis (8:51 PM)
Hmmm . . . maybe the first inning wasn't the shirt's fault.
AJ (New York)
what do you think about the way the mets cubs and angels meltdowns
Jim Callis (8:55 PM)
Wouldn't say the Cubs and Angels melted down. They just got outplayed in a short series--that happens. I though the Red Sox were better than the Angels anyway.
Ryan (Virginia)
Were do you think CC will sign next year?
Jim Callis (8:55 PM)
Wherever he can get the most money. I'm thinking Yankees or Mets.
Jon (Fullerton)
What do you think of Torre's decision to play Pierre instead of Kemp?
Jim Callis (8:56 PM)
Don't like it, I would have stuck with Kemp. Much more dangerous at the plate.
Steve (California)
Any chance Manny stays in LA next year?
Jim Callis (8:56 PM)
I don't think the Dodgers will offer him enough to keep him.
Eddie (Los Angeles)
Would Angels have a chance to keep either K-Rod or Teixiera?
Jim Callis (8:56 PM)
Sure, they can spend with anyone. My guess is they keep Teixeira and lose K-Rod.
JGB (Puerto Rico)
Pierre it's a solid outfilder and a gfreat first or second bat in the order
Jim Callis (8:57 PM)
"Pierre" and "great bat" should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Unless that sentence is: Pierre has far from a great bat.
Jim Callis (8:57 PM)
Maybe it was the shirt after all.
Tim (conn.)
y would anyone get rid of k-rod?
Jim Callis (8:58 PM)
The Angels won't get rid of him. I just think someone else will offer him more money. And I think that team will regret the contract before it ends.
Greg Iversen (Philly)
Jose Arredondo is going to be the angels closer next year
Jim Callis (9:00 PM)
Or Scot Shields. They can do just fine without giving K-Rod an eight-figure annual salary.
Joe (outside philly)
would you have gone Hammels 1-4-7?
Jim Callis (9:02 PM)
No, I wouldn't have. If the Phillies were trailing 2-1, I would have considered it.
andre miller (philly)
i bet the phlles wont go farther then my team the sixers
Jim Callis (9:02 PM)
They already have, haven't they?
Rob (NY)
what were you saying about pierre?
Jim Callis (9:03 PM)
Still won't convince me he can do anything but run.
David (Columbia, SC)
Pierre actually hit .283 this year...that's not horrible
Jim Callis (9:05 PM)
Yeah, but the .327 OBP is weak and the .328 SLG is horrible. He's a bad offensive player, that single notwithstanding. Why am I wasting time dwelling on Juan Pierre?
Jim Callis (9:05 PM)
It's definitely the shirt.
zach (MD)
What is your prediction for the outcome of this game?
Jim Callis (9:06 PM)
I picked the Dodgers to win 5-2 at the start of the game and I'll stick with that for now.
pat burrell (phily)
What do you think is going to happen to me during the off-season?
Jim Callis (9:09 PM)
I think you'll leave town and the Phillies (and their fans) will miss you more than they thought they would.
Drew (Philly)
do you agree, one of the worst comercials you've seen for burger kind in a while?
Jim Callis (9:09 PM)
Missed that one. Distracted because my 9-year-old daughter is playing violin right next to my ear right now.
Kyle (San Francisco)
Please don't say, return home to the giants
Jim Callis (9:10 PM)
You know, I could see Burrell going to a team like the Giants that decides it really needs some offense.
Manny Ramirez (LA)
If my team makes it to the world series and so do the Red Sox, what will my reception at fenway be like?
Jim Callis (9:10 PM)
Standing ovation.
jon (detroit)
what are your thoughts on, what the tigers have to do in tge offseason to win the worldseries in 09
Jim Callis (9:11 PM)
That's a lot to ask. Their team is very old and I think has a chance to get worse rather than better. They have a lot of pitching holes to fill.
Max (Williamsburg, Va)
Chase plays the violin! Just like your daughter!
Jim Callis (9:12 PM)
She probably doesn't hit as well as him, though.
Nova (Chitown)
Who hits the next homer between Howard and Manny?
Jim Callis (9:12 PM)
Manny.
scott (md)
How long till the Orioles are contendors
Jim Callis (9:13 PM)
They're moving in the right direction, but they're in the wrong division. I think fourth place is going to be their high-water mark for the next 2-3 years.
Joe (Newark)
Do the Pirates get over .500 next season?
Jim Callis (9:13 PM)
No.
Jacob (Amherst)
do the sox and rays go 7?
Jim Callis (9:15 PM)
Yes, I think they're destined to go seven. And Jon Lester vs. Matt Garza would be fun -- surely have to be a better game than today.
Jim Callis (9:17 PM)
Why is Ward in the game for the Giants? My fantasy team (the one that doesn't suck) needs Jacobs in there . . . back to baseball, got distracted . . .
Matt (Boston)
Do you think some of Ortiz's struggle is due to Manny not being there?
Jim Callis (9:18 PM)
I don't. Youkilis has been fine behind him. I don't think Ortiz is 100 percent physically and now he looks frustrated, popping up a lot of pitches. Not sure why the Rays still pitch around him and why he doesn't bunt once or twice.
Tim (Richmond VA)
There's your TD for Jacobs
Jim Callis (9:18 PM)
Sweet! Was back on baseball and missed that.
Jim (Palo Alto)
What do you think of changing the current division scheme to one where teams are competing for playoff spots with other teams in their payroll neighborhood, for some definition of "payroll" and "neighborhood". Like a self-inflicted salary cap. Royals, twins, a's, rays, orioles would have been a division this year
Jim Callis (9:19 PM)
Don't like it . . . Payrolls change all the time. The best part about that would be seeing teams trying to jockey for divisional positioning.
Patrick (Texas)
What is the score on the football game? Can't take my eyes off baseball.
Jim Callis (9:20 PM)
7-3, Giants. They should destroy the Browns.
Jake (PA)
Do you think Ryan Howard will win the MVP award?
Jim Callis (9:20 PM)
I don't think he should but I do think there's a good chance he'll beat out Pujols.
Byron (Des Moines)
Which young Dodger has the brightest future and where do you see them next year as a team?
Jim Callis (9:22 PM)
Clayton Kershaw. They'll be the favorites in the NL West next year.
Dan (Houston)
Does baseball have any plans to even the leagues back out (instead of having 6 in the NL Central and 4 in the AL West). If they don't, do you think they should?
Jim Callis (9:23 PM)
It won't happen because you'd need interleague games every day. More likely we see two 16-team leagues in the future.
bill (philly)
Why do the announcers think its impressive that martin has batted in all eight line up spots? I'm more impressed by a guy who hit third all season.
Jim Callis (9:23 PM)
They've got 3 1/2 hours to fill.
jon (detroit)
what do you think of changing the amount of games from 5 to 7 in the divison leuage series
Jim Callis (9:24 PM)
That would be fine with me. Not sure why Bud Selig insists we'd have to have a shorter season if two games were added to the playoffs.
Jon (Minnesota@work)
Hey who do u you have in a phillies vs rays world series?
Jim Callis (9:25 PM)
Rays. I would pick either AL team over either NL team.
Matt (Chicago)
Who do I thank for the Phillie's success?
Jim Callis (9:26 PM)
If I can only name one person, I'll go with Mike Arbuckle, whose drafts did more to build this team than anything else.
Robbie N (Bos)
The home field advantage determied by AS game is a joke!
Jim Callis (9:27 PM)
I don't have a problem with it. It's better than the old system of just alternating leagues. And it does make the All-Star Game more meaningful.
Catfish (Little Rock)
Ill take Cole Hamels against any starter left in the postseason.
Jim Callis (9:27 PM)
After Lester's performance today, I concur.
larry (chico, ca)
i know this dates back to an earlier conversation, but do you think the rays are truly an underdog. even having won the tough al east, and beat the redsox 10-8 in the season series. including 2/3 in fenway in the last series.
Jim Callis (9:29 PM)
No, I don't. Those teams are evenly matched.
Jim Callis (9:29 PM)
Wow, an enlightening Sounds of the Game!
mike (san diego, ca)
what did they say i am only watching via game cast as im at work
Jim Callis (9:30 PM)
Home plate umpire Ted Barrett was commenting that the balls were too slick and that Derek Lowe wasn't going to like them.
Mike (Auburn)
To go with one of the last questions, arent you tired of hearing how tampa is for real every half inning, like we get it already
Jim Callis (9:31 PM)
Yes. Trying to stay away from all the announcer comments, but I hate how they pander to the lowest common denominator of baseball knowledge. Tell those of us who love the game something we might not know.
Jim Callis (9:32 PM)
Some sloppy play all the way around tonight.
David McLeod (Willimantic)
Do you think Tampa will keep their team together for next season, or commit to a "Fire Sale" much like the Marlins of years ago after their W.S. win?
Jim Callis (9:34 PM)
No need for a fire sale. They'll be around for a while. Back in a second . . . need to go cut a slice of pecan pie for my 7-year-old daughter (and one for myself).
Shelley (Sox Fan in FL)
i love chocolate pecan pie. ever had it?
Jim Callis (9:40 PM)
I have, but I prefer my pecan pie straight up.
Eric (houston)
Why does everyone underate Greg Dobbs defense?
Jim Callis (9:41 PM)
Oh, he's not very good defensively. Would be hard to underrate him. I do like the bat, though. And he's one of the few fifth-year college seniors to sign as a free agent before the draft to make it to the majors.
chase (nashville, tn)
"this is kind of a pitcher hitting versus pitcher type crowd...right now".....seriously?
Jim Callis (9:42 PM)
I missed that . . . what is that supposed to mean?
Ivan (san diego)
phi vs tampa....not a good ws
Jim Callis (9:43 PM)
I disagree. Any matchup can be compelling if the games are well-played. And I'd venture that we don't get too many World Series where the two clubs have combined for one previous WS championship.
chase (nashville, tn)
i don't know...mccarver said it....i was seeing if you could decipher the code?
Jim Callis (9:44 PM)
I can not.
aladdin (stamford, ct)
i believe mccarver was trying to say the crowd was dead..although he made it interesting
Ryan (San Francisco)
Middle relief = underrated, Closers = overrated. Am I wrong?
Jim Callis (9:46 PM)
For the most part, you're correct.
Josh (Agoura Hills)
I know, odd question but I gotta ask it. What do you think of the Giants next year or in a few years? I really like their young pitching talent and they have a few uo and coming hitters.
Jim Callis (9:48 PM)
They're 2-3 years away from contending because most of those hitters are in the lower minors. And the NL West is loaded with young talent, so it's going to be quite the uphill climb.
Jesse (New York)
Do you think that Derek Lowe's performance tongight will help him out or hurt him this offseason?
Jim Callis (9:50 PM)
He's going to get paid well, regardless. Remember how most of us thought the contract the Dodgers signed him to was crazy at four years and $36 million? That turned out to be a bargain.
Chris (Philadelphia)
So why does short rest help a sinkerball pitcher?
Jim Callis (9:50 PM)
The theory is he won't throw as hard and thus get more sink on his sinker.
Mike (Anaheim)
New york Giants: 7..... Clveland Browns:....17!
Jim Callis (9:51 PM)
Just when you think you have the NFL figured out . . . I think the Browns are rallying around Kellen Winslow's swollen testicles.
Gary (NC)
Do you think its possible for a team to go back to a 4 man rotation all year?
Jim Callis (9:52 PM)
I don't see why a team couldn't do it, especially with starters averaging about six innings a start these days. Makes sense to me to take starts away from your worst pitcher and give them to your better arms. The problem would be conditioning your starters to make the adjustment, and if your team didn't perform well, you'd get crucified for the decision.
Bootleg (Honolulu)
What's the mood in the ballpark right now? Are the fans nervous or feeling a Dodger comeback?
Jim Callis (9:53 PM)
I'm in my home office here in suburban Chicago, so I can't tell you.
Mehdi (Houston)
I hope Lidge catches his case of Albert Pujols again soon...the man blew it in Houston last year now hes back to normal?!
Jim Callis (9:53 PM)
He's had a great year but I still think he has at least one postseason meltdown in him.
David McLeod (Willimantic, CT)
Is this Phillies game turning into a pitcher's duel?
Jim Callis (9:56 PM)
It has settled down, hasn't it?
Tucker (Jersey City)
think the dodgers will score this inning?
Jim Callis (9:56 PM)
Yes.
JD (Amherst)
They should have more of those mic'd up sessions with the umpires...they are pretty interesting.
Jim Callis (9:57 PM)
I agree. Ted Barrett's sound bites have been entertaining.
Greg (Los Angeles)
Jim, any predictions on outcome?
Jim Callis (9:57 PM)
Sticking with my 5-2 Dodgers prediction! Won't give up on that one until it becomes impossible.
Ben (Seattle)
This is a dangerous situation. Manny gonna hit a homer?
Jim Callis (9:58 PM)
Blanton is the type of pitcher he should just destroy.
Chase (nashville,tn)
whatshould phillys do now with 2 on and manny up
Jim Callis (9:58 PM)
Root for a triple play.
Jim Callis (9:59 PM)
Wow, I don't like that decision by Furcal. It worked out but with no one out you run through a stop sign and you're just barely safe?
Brett (Philly)
Whadya say Jim, take out Blanton?
Jim Callis (10:02 PM)
I'm keeping him in right now.
Vjiay (Sacramemto)
u like this intentional walk here?
Jim Callis (10:04 PM)
I don't like the intentional walk in general. In this situation, gives Blanton no margin for error.
Jim Callis (10:04 PM)
But I guess that worked out OK for the Phillies.
Rich (Miami)
Don't you think instead of throwing four straight balls to intentionally walk a guy, they should just throw one pitch a hit them? Not a hard throw but something to save your pitchers arm a little.
Jim Callis (10:06 PM)
No, but I think you should be able to just announce the intentional walk rather than having to throw the pitches.
Domingo (tucson)
17 to 14 browns. eli to plax
Jim Callis (10:06 PM)
I'm playing against Manning, so that's not good.
don (Illinois)
Hey Jim, how long you think Torre will stick with Lowe tonite?
Jim Callis (10:07 PM)
Wow. I was just going to say that with 74 pitches through five innings, I thought Lowe could go two more. But here's Clayton Kershaw.
Jim Callis (10:08 PM)
You know who's been tremendous in the playoffs for the Dodgers with little fanfare? Cory Wade.
Sonny (LA)
Agree with Torre puting Kershaw in the game over Lowe?
Jim Callis (10:08 PM)
I would have stuck with Lowe. Don't think it's a huge difference either way.
Tucker (Jersey City)
is torre the best big game manager in baseball?
Chip (Chicago)
I think Torre has been exposed for being a subpar bullpen manager. Sure is easy to look good when you have Mariano always ready to go two innings.
Jim Callis (10:10 PM)
Two differing views . . . I never have been overly impressed with Torre as a tactician in the playoffs, and Rivera does have a way of making his skipper look good.
Allen (Lubbock)
How good for the Dodgers do you think Kershaw will eventually become?
Jim Callis (10:12 PM)
Potential Cy Young Award winner and I think he'll be better than Billingsley, becoming the club's future ace. But he's not pitching like that tonight.
Jim Callis (10:12 PM)
Why are they playing in for the bunt?
Jim Callis (10:13 PM)
Again, what do I know. But I hate the bunt call by the Phillies there. Don't like playing for one run at all.
Tony (orange, ca)
way to go braylon edwards! needed him to start putting up some fantasy pts.
Jim Callis (10:13 PM)
I'm playing against him too, so stop it!
Andre Herrera (Los Angeles)
they are trying to advance the run..plus it throws Kershaw off even more
Jim Callis (10:14 PM)
I disagree. It gives Kershaw a free out when he was really struggling.
Louie (Kentucky)
Jim, why don't you like playing for one run in a tight, one run game?
Jim Callis (10:15 PM)
Because they're down by one. I'd like to win, not tie. Victorino can run, he's not an automatic DP on a grounder.
Noah (Portland, OR)
Jim Do yo think ichiro will make Hall of fame?
Jim Callis (10:15 PM)
Yes, I think the writers will vote him in.
Derek Lowe (Dugout)
Jim would you have left me in or took me out
Jim Callis (10:15 PM)
Left you in . . . and let the record show that I said that before Kershaw struggled.
Max (Boston)
I've always liked Torre, but c'mon, a 20 year old rookie and Chan Ho Park over Derek Lowe? Is he trying to lose?
Jim Callis (10:16 PM)
These moves aren't blowing me away either. I love to first guess and argue the options. I hate the second guessing after the fact if the move doesn't work out.
Derek Lowe's shirt (trash)
I feel underappreciated
Jim Callis (10:17 PM)
He needs to put that second shirt back on. Do you think he took it off in the clubhouse? Bad move.
Bill (Orlando)
I'm thinking Torre is saving Lowe for Game 7.
Jim Callis (10:18 PM)
Need to win Game Four or there might not be a Game Seven. Or Game Six, with Hamels starting Game Five for the Phillies.
Jim Callis (10:18 PM)
Horrible pitch to chase by Feliz. And horrible running by Howard.
Jim Callis (10:19 PM)
Actually, scratch that. Howard isn't scoring if that's caught.
Corey (New Haven, CT)
You really think Hamels will shut them down that much? I expect Billingsley to turn it around his next turn.
Jim Callis (10:20 PM)
I do. I think Hamels will win handily. However, I thought Lester was going to win today, too.
Matt (PA)
There goes your prediction. New thoughts?
Jim Callis (10:20 PM)
I'll go Phillies 5-4 now.
dustin (ohio)
how did howard score?
Jim Callis (10:21 PM)
Rumbled home on a wild pitch.
Matt (PA)
What do you think, pinch hit for blanton if ruiz gets on
Jim Callis (10:22 PM)
I would. Not like Blanton is dominating the Dodgers and I want this run.
Josh (NM)
Way to be an unbiased commentator Jim.
Jim Callis (10:24 PM)
Yeah, that's my Phillies bias. Come on, I was answering the question as to what I would do if I was managing the Phillies. Lighten up.
Jim Callis (10:26 PM)
And Ethier makes a sweet diving catch to keep it tied. Yes, this game is better than the one we got this afternoon.
Burkle (Beavercreek OH)
Who do you bring in to pitch the 6th Jim?
Jim Callis (10:27 PM)
Bottom half of the lineup coming up, I might try to get an inning out of Durbin here.
Cody (Minnesota)
When do you think the Yankees will return to post season action?
Jim Callis (10:27 PM)
2010.
Justin (Kansas)
Eli has two picks and a lost fumble, will New York hate him again
Jim Callis (10:28 PM)
Yeah, and those don't hurt him in the game I'm playing against him in. Ridiculous!
Jim Callis (10:28 PM)
Hey, Charlie Manuel is listening to me.
Manny (LA)
How do the Yanks treat Jeter when it comes to contract time? Does he get over paid again?
Jim Callis (10:29 PM)
Yes, they won't ever let him leave.
Chip (Chicago)
he shouldn't have listened to you
Jim Callis (10:29 PM)
Nope. Who needs Carlos Santana?
Greg (Los Angeles)
Who has a better beard, Youkilis or Casey Blake?
Jim Callis (10:30 PM)
Youkilis.
Kendell (Arkansas)
Who is the best player under 25 thats still in the playoffs?
Jim Callis (10:31 PM)
Without doing any research, I'll say B.J. Upton.
Jim Callis (10:31 PM)
OK, they have to get Durbin out of here as soon as they can.
Brett (Philly)
Home field advantage plays a huge part in this series. The 12th man is my X-Factor player.
Jim Callis (10:32 PM)
Is this a football game? Wouldn't that be the 10th man?
Joe Torre (Dugout)
Guys, I got this ok? Stop second guessing me on here will ya?
Ben (Buffalo)
Are they really letting beimel hit in this close of a game?
Jim Callis (10:33 PM)
Bad move . . . Pierre can score from second on a single. I go for the kill here. Not like Chan Ho Park was Christy Mathewson out there.
Matt (Philly)
No, even better, they're letting Kemp hit in this close of a game
Jim Callis (10:33 PM)
Much better move.
Mike (Tampa)
Upton over Longoria?
Jim Callis (10:33 PM)
See, I told you I didn't do any research. I'll take Longoria, with Upton a close second.
Corey (New Haven, CT)
I cant believe durbin is still pitching, hes gonna blow this wide open.
Jim Callis (10:34 PM)
I assume no one was warming up at the start of the inning.
Aladdin (stamford, ct)
got to bunt here
Jim Callis (10:36 PM)
I don't, not with the way Furcal has been hitting. Swing away.
Charlie Manuel (Dugout)
So Jim if my Phillies lose this game tonight do you think we can still win the series?
Jim Callis (10:39 PM)
Yes. Hamels wins Game Five and they can take one more back in Philly.
Jim Callis (10:40 PM)
Wow, Scott Eyre really looks like former BA writer and current Pirates count Chris Kline.
abe (santa barbara)
push bunt to the right side, ryan howard can not throw
Jim Callis (10:40 PM)
Abe posted that before that horrible play, good call.
Preston (Richmond)
We'll definitely see Blanton over Moyer if Game 7 is necessary, right? Blanton (like Lowe for the Dodgers) would be on normal rest.
Jim Callis (10:42 PM)
I would do that, yes.
Tom (Michigan)
Any way Tigers get in mix for Manny??
Jim Callis (10:44 PM)
Don't see it. They need to get younger and cheaper, not older and more expensive. And Manny can't pitch.
Jim Callis (10:44 PM)
Here comes an intentional walk.
Matt (Philly)
Which is better: drafts with one star player or drafts with 5 or 6 average players? The Phillies go for the first one it seems, with JRoll, Utley, Burrell, Howard, Myers, and Hamels. They never seem to get average guys out of their farm system. They are either great or garbage.
Jim Callis (10:45 PM)
Well, the Phillies don't try to draft just one star and get nothing else. But to answer your question, you win with stars, so give me the stars and I can find average players elsewhere.
Matt (Florida)
The Rays don't have any single really obvious star and they're doing pretty well.
Jim Callis (10:48 PM)
Longoria? Upton?
Tom (Florida)
If Hamels keeps the pitch count within reason on Weds, you think there's a good chance we see him available for relief in a potential game 7?
Jim Callis (10:50 PM)
Yes. Anything goes in Game Seven.
Jesus (Los Angeles)
Is it me or is Martin hurting the dodgers with his bat this game...
Jim Callis (10:52 PM)
Not sure how lining into a double play is his fault . . .
Mike (NY)
Jim, what was the best game you've ever been to?
Jim Callis (10:52 PM)
Probably Game Seven of the 2001 World Series.
Trey (Huntsville, AL)
Was that D-Backs and Yanks???
Jim Callis (10:53 PM)
Yep, that's the one.
KJ (Stillwater, OK Go Cowboys)
Yes, Tony Womack single off of Mo
Jim Callis (10:57 PM)
Probably the most shocking hit I've ever witnessed first hand. Womack just turned on a pitch and doubled to right field off the greatest postseason reliever ever. Go figure.
Dan (Philly)
sorta like gibson with eckersly
Jim Callis (10:58 PM)
That was my 21st birthday. Wasn't exactly sober when Gibson took Eck deep.
Dan (Maryland)
You might not need the "postseason" qualifier vis-a-vis Rivera when he's all done.
Jim Callis (10:59 PM)
True.
mike (Cali)
in the crrunch who do u choose.... goose gossage or mo?
Jim Callis (11:00 PM)
Rivera.
Wilder (MI)
who is the best postseason starter?
Jim Callis (11:01 PM)
Bob Gibson.
Joe (NY)
Bad news Jim, Braylon just scored a TD.
Jim Callis (11:02 PM)
I know. I'm now up by one point, but have to face Eli, who's going to be throwing and not handing the ball to Jacobs.
Nick (Indiana)
How many of these 4 teams had you expected to be left this late Jim?
Jim Callis (11:08 PM)
Let's see . . . opening my predictions file from the beginning of the season. I had the Red Sox beating the Mets in the World Series. Missed on the Rays, of course, but had the Phillies and Dodgers in the playoffs.
Nova (Chitown)
Jim, will we be seeing any of these final four teams next year at this time?
Jim Callis (11:09 PM)
All four of them could be back. I don't think any of them are pretenders.
Matt (Denver)
Who were your 8 teams in the playoffs, Jim?
Jim Callis (11:09 PM)
I had the Red Sox, Tigers, Angels, Mets, Brewers and Dodgers winning divisions and the Indians and Phillies as wild cards.
Jim Callis (11:11 PM)
I did almost as well in 2005, when I picked the 2008 races three years early. I had the Red Sox winning the AL East, with the Rays finishing second and four teams having winning records. My other division winners were the Twins, A's, Braves, Cubs and Dodgers, with the Indians and Brewers as wild cards.
Connor (Pittsburgh)
So you have forseen the Rays to become a team like this for awhile?
Jim Callis (11:13 PM)
I was on the bandwagon early. But I thought 2010 would be their year, not 2008.
Brian (Denver)
Jim, why not bring in Wade for the 8th and finish up with Broxton? Why keep Kuo in?
Jim Callis (11:14 PM)
Kuo was pitching well, not going to argue with that decision (like I did with so many others earlier).
Morgan (Indiana)
And Wde is in.
Jim Callis (11:16 PM)
Wade has been lights out this postseason, let's see if he can continue. I'm not sure we ever listed Cory Wade in a Prospect Handbook.
John (FL)
Dagger thru the heart E. Wright interception return 94 yards
Jim Callis (11:16 PM)
Which now means no more running for Jacobs, and Manning will get garbage stats to beat me. Thanks, Eli.
Bootleg (Honolulu)
Looking forward a bit, I don't think Game 5 is anything near a sure thing for the Phils....Billingsley is a stud.
Jim Callis (11:17 PM)
Only if there's good pitch selection.
Jim Callis (11:17 PM)
Wow! Shane Victorino!
Jim Callis (11:19 PM)
Ramirez due up in the bottom half, of course.
Dan (Philly)
This is what October is all about! Wow... this has been a great game both ways
Burkle (Beavercreek OH)
pinch hit or let Madson stay in to pitch?
Jim Callis (11:20 PM)
PH and try to get some more runs.
Rich (Wichita, KS)
When is Casey Blake under contract until?
Jim Callis (11:23 PM)
He's a free agent after the playoffs.
Robby (Maryland)
Who would you bring in for the 9th do you go like the yankees and bring in the closer or stay with the standard bull pen
Jim Callis (11:23 PM)
Lidge.
Jim Callis (11:24 PM)
Wow! Matt Stairs!
Kendall (Philadelphia)
That is a PROFESSIONAL hitter right there.
Ben (Rutgers)
What is going on out there??!?!
Jim Callis (11:25 PM)
Two-run pinch-HR for Matt Stairs, now 7-5 Phillies.
Jim Callis (11:26 PM)
Looks like the helmet got pounded down hard on poor Stairs' head there.
Jim Callis (11:26 PM)
Glad we have Tim McCarver to explain that this is a devastating turn of events for the Dodgers. Thanks, Tim.
Jim Callis (11:27 PM)
I like Broxton, but I wonder if Torre is having Kyle Farnsworth flashbacks right now.
Bill (MI)
Not that I'm defending McCarver, but would you be so critical if the game was on ESPN?
Jim Callis (11:30 PM)
I don't work for ESPN, so yes.
Jim Callis (11:32 PM)
For fun, let's hope that the Dodgers get a runner on so Manny represents the tying run.
Evan (UCLA)
Who do you work for then?
Jim Callis (11:32 PM)
Baseball America. Go check us out at baseballamerica.com.
Josh (Philadelphia)
If the Phillies close this game out, is that pretty much the series? I can't see the Dodgers recovering from a huge blow against Hamels AND Myers.
Jim Callis (11:33 PM)
Yes, I think it would be tough for the Dodgers to come back (not that that's a bold statement).
Ken (Philadelphia)
Jim - that was almost as bold a statement as the one McCarver made!
Jim Callis (11:35 PM)
I was responding to a question!
ron (philly)
Jim - ALthough it is assumed that Ruben Amaro will be the next Phils GM, doesnt that mean that they will risk losing Mike Arbuckle and all the scouting/player development skills he brings to the Phils?
Jim Callis (11:36 PM)
I'm not sure what would happen to Arbuckle, who has done as much or more to build the Phillies as anyone. But it seems like Amaro has the inside track to succeed Gillick.
Chris B. (Los Angeles)
Do you think Torre has mismanaged the bullpen this game? Please take my question.
Jim Callis (11:37 PM)
Well, I said at the time I would have left Lowe in. But in the eighth, I liked both the Wade and the Broxton moves. Blame the pitchers, not Torre.
Sean (Philly)
Do you know anything about Amaro's draft strategy?
Jim Callis (11:37 PM)
He hasn't been a big part of the Phillies' drafts, so he has no known draft philosophy.
Dave (Illinois)
I agree with you Jim. I think that amanager gets too much credit when they win and too much blame when they lose.
Jim Callis (11:38 PM)
Yes . . . they get lauded or blamed on how the move works out rather than the thinking behind the move. There's only so much you can do tactically.
Dennis (New Orleans)
Brad Lidge blows his first save of the season tonight. Calling it now I hope you show this!!!!!!
Jim Callis (11:39 PM)
Duly noted.
Rich (Wichita, KS)
A manager never gets enough credit with all those egos to manage!
Jim Callis (11:39 PM)
That's what I was getting at -- I think handling the players is more difficult than handling the game.
Brian (Boston)
Ooh are you the prospect man from BaseballAmerica? Man you are my idol. I join all your chats and didnt even connect the 2! Do you think Lars Anderson will have a starting job at 1st for the Sox next year if Lowell cant come back?
Jim Callis (11:40 PM)
I think that's a bit early. I expect Anderson will spend most or all of the year in the minors before pushing for a job in 2010.
JC (Chicago)
What is Derek Lowe's all time playoffs record?
Jim Callis (11:43 PM)
I know he won all three clinchers for Boston in 2004. Let's see . . . 5-5, 3.32 in 20 games (nine starts).
chicomc (west chester)
casey blake wins this game with a walk-off
Chris (DC)
It really feels like they have not been able to get Manny out once this series...
Jim Callis (11:45 PM)
I'm with you on that one.
mikey45 (los angeles)
Loney time , hes clutch
Jim Callis (11:48 PM)
I like Loney in this situation, too. I don't fear Kent, who's in the on-deck circle.
Jim Callis (11:50 PM)
He's going to have to pull off a 30-plus-pitch save.
Chris (New Jersey)
Way too interesting there for my taste Jim
Jim Callis (11:51 PM)
Thanks to both teams for delivering a much better game than we got this afternoon.
Philly Fleas (San Francisco)
What is the most number of pitches Lidge has thrown this year?
Jim Callis (11:54 PM)
33 on Sept. 16.
Max (Brooklyn)
I have no horse in this race and I'm exhausted. Great game.
Jim Callis (11:54 PM)
Me too. Though the game is over 3 1/2 hours no, so we should be exhausted.
Tim (Phoenix)
Seriously, how do you have all these stats? Is it in your brain, on a cheat sheet? Or are you a Google Master???
Jim Callis (11:55 PM)
baseball-reference.com
B0r3dGuy (Anaheim)
Do you think the Dodgers have a chance to comback in the Bottom of the 9th?
Jim Callis (12:03 AM)
I do. Before the postseason and again before tonight's game I said my gut feeling was that Lidge would blow a game this postseason. And he's going to have to throw a lot of pitches tonight.
Nick (State College)
I'd love to see the Phillies blow it, but unfortunately I don't think the Dodgers have the guys coming to the plate this inning to do it
Jim Callis (12:04 AM)
Me either.
mike (east moline Il)
Did Lige win the game he had 33 pitches in?
Jim Callis (12:05 AM)
Yes, he did get a save despite walking three guys in one inning.
Jim Callis (12:06 AM)
OK, this is just about over . . .
Larry (bangor, pa)
brad lidge is a stud... do you think he's the best closer in the league jim?
Jim Callis (12:06 AM)
In the NL? Yes.
Norm (Danbury CT)
5 pitches, 2 outs...so much for high pitch count
Steve (st. louis)
I'd only put rivera ahead of him for all of baseball.
Jim Callis (12:08 AM)
I'd take Papelbon and Nathan, too.
Jim Callis (12:08 AM)
And that's that. Exciting game tonight. I hope for the same when I'm back for the Rays-Red Sox Game 5 chat on Thursday. Good night, everyone.
