Pontiac Game Changing Performance

Davis will be chatting about the season as well as the Pontiac Game Changing Performances seen during the games.
Rece Davis (4:00 PM)
Hi Everyone. Happy Thanksgiving a little early. Don't forget to vote for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance this week. The Cuse has a chance to salvage something else from the Greg Robinson era.
Billye (Kerrville, TX)
as an OU fan, i say forget about the BIG XII game and NC Game...Give us USC in the Fiesta Bowl PLEASE!!!
Rece Davis (4:01 PM)
billye, you really want to pass on the national title game? I assume you're thinking payback for 2004.
Sam ( Atlanta, GA )
Are the folks at ESPN, going to support only the Conference champions getting to play for the BCS title this year, like they did last year. If Mizzou somehow wins the big 12
Rece Davis (4:02 PM)
some do, Sam. I don't. I think it can be a tiebreaker--for instance it was a good tiebreaker between LSU and Georgia last year in my opinion.
Zach (Austin)
It seems like even if Texas wins, the Longhorns are out of luck no matter what. If OU wins, they'll probably jump ahead of Texas. If OU loses, there is no 3-way tie, and Texas Tech goes to the Big XII title game. The only sure way Texas will make it to the Big XII title game (assuming they beat Texas A&M) is for Texas Tech to lose to Baylor, and I don't see that happening. Is Texas's best chance to make it to the NC game for OU or Tx Tech to lose to Missouri in the Big XII title game?
Tim- Bowling Green, OH
If the Gators get beat by the Tide... Will the Gators drop out of a BCS Bowl? Thanks
Rece Davis (4:04 PM)
No, Tim. Barring losses by Florida or Alabama this weekend, winner goes to BCS title game...loser to the Sugar. That's not set in stone or official or anything...but that's what will happen. Should either lose their last 2...then that's a different situation.
Paul (Hemet, CA)
Is USC's strength of schedule hurting them? If so, what can they do to be in a better position next year?
Rece Davis (4:05 PM)
I think it is, Paul. there's not much they can do other than hope the Pac 10 is better. USC has a game with ND every year..and they played an ACC team..plus 9 conference games...that should be enough. The relative weakness of the Pac 10 is killing them right now.
Larry (Glendale, CA)
Worst play-call...Urban Meyer?s play-call on 4th and 1 at the MISSISSIPPI 32 with 01:22 to go in the 4th Quarter this season or Pete Carroll?s play-call on 4th and 2 at the TEXAS 45 with 02:13 to go in 4th Quarter of the 2006 Rose Bowl?
Rece Davis (4:05 PM)
I'll go with Pete's call. Bush not even on the field as a decoy...correct?
Garrett, Provo,UT
Any way USC jumps the Big 12 south team that doesn't make it's championship game if Missori wins it? Or is there too much ground to make up? What other Scenerio do they get in? Missouri winning the Big 12 CG, AND Florida Losing to FSU then beating Alabama??
Rece Davis (4:07 PM)
I think all would need two losses. USC is in need of upsets galore. It might be easier to root for Alabama and Florida to each lose this weekend and hope that OK State beats OK to avoid a Texas-OU rematch.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Home game. Senior Day. Against an 8-loss team. 20 point favorite. 30 million dollar coach. Their own TV network. Great tradition. A loss! Did I miss anything?
Rece Davis (4:08 PM)
Coach's job security?
Logan, Morgantown
Rece, do you think there is anyone willing to give Pat White a shot at quarterback in the NFL?
Rece Davis (4:08 PM)
Maybe a shot, but I think he'll wind up either like Brad Smith as a receiver or in the CFL. I could be wrong though.
Ty (Detroit, MI)
Rece, I'm all for any arguments for UT being in the title game. But what irls me is people keep bringing up head to head between UT and OU like Tech's win againt UT doesnt matter when in fact if OU loses Tech will get in so it does matter. In a 3-way tie it's unfair only to look at head to head with only 2 of the teams.
Rece Davis (4:10 PM)
I agree Ty. Head to head should always be the first criteria. Then you drop down to things like schedule and who's playing the best. The one interesting argument someone put forth to me today was that Tech's loss was so non-competitive that you remove them from the national championship equation. It's a reasonable position, but I can't go there now.
Zach (Muncie, IN)
With Central and Western Michigan ranking close to 30th in the AP last time i checked...even though the Non BCS is sealed up...does that give Ball State any credibility?? Also, if the Cards have no shot at a BCS Bowl then why do Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl reps keep popping up at our games???
Rece Davis (4:11 PM)
I think Ball State has credibility. the Bowl reps want to cover all potential bases.
jason ( Tuscaloosa, AL)
Rece, why do you think that most people think it is a foregone conclusion that UF will be in NC game?
Rece Davis (4:12 PM)
Offense captiavates the imagination. That's why so many are dismissing any chance of of your hometown team winning the next two games. They may be right, but personally, I don't think it's wise to assume that.
jack, okc
Do you think since OU recent struggles in the BCS, the polls would rather see a Texas team that can actually beat an SEC/USC team.
Rece Davis (4:13 PM)
I don't think so. I think many believe that OU is the most balanced and most exciting team. A lot of support for Florida in that regard too. I don't think there's any bias against OU other than the fact that they lost head-to-head Texas.
Zaid (Austin)
Rece, If OU does in fact beat OSU this weekend, will it realistically be enough to push them past the Horns? Take into account our strength of schedule, our quality wins, and our only loss, with 1 second left on the road. What do you think? Is Bevo going to south beach??
Rece Davis (4:15 PM)
I'll defer to our BCS guru Brad Edwards who assured me today that an OU win over Oklahoma St would be enough to push them past Texas. There is one caveat. If Texas were to persuade enough voters to rank them ahead of Oklahoma, that could offset the computer move. Doesn't seem likely though. It'll be close either way.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Ageless Beano Cook thinks that ageless JoePa and the Nits will be better next year. Do you agree?
Rece Davis (4:15 PM)
They'd better be really good then. They're very good this year.
Nick (FL)
Rece - your answer to jason in tuscaloosa is incomplete. While it is true that Florida has the better offense than Bama, Florida also has the better defense (statistically speaking).
Rece Davis (4:17 PM)
That game will be all about style of play. Think basketball...who gets the tempo in their favor. You're correct, the Gators are excellent on D. But it's Tebow, Harvin, Demps and Rainey that have people in love with them. That's no slight to Spikes and Black..People just like offense. That's the only point I was making.
StopSaucingRece
Can you remind me what happened in Dallas on Oct. 11 ?
Rece Davis (4:17 PM)
No one has forgotten.
TC (Frederick, OK)
Rece, Please tell me why no one is talking about who has the worst one-loss of the one loss powers? Would that not be Florida losing to Ole Miss at home? Also, why is it that the people in charge of the BCS keep degrading the integrity of FBS football by not instituting a playoff? Would that not be fun to watch this year if money were not a factor?
Rece Davis (4:20 PM)
Florida's loss is irrelevant. they're close enough to the top and they'll get a shot to play #1. That will get them one of the top 2 spots. OU's loss was a "better" loss, but Florida's wasn't awful. Ole Miss is a tough matchup because of their strength on the line of scrimmage. You'll see several of those guys playing on Sundays in the not too distant future.
Eric (Venice, CA)
Quick. Who has beaten more Top 25 teams, USC or Florida?......USC. Actually Florida has only beaten one Top 25 Team, an over-rated Georgia. Why are they ranked higher than USC? Thanks.
Rece Davis (4:24 PM)
True...but if you're using the AP top 25 for your rankings..then Ole Miss is now ranked. Tough to call Georgia overrated. Maybe they didn't meet expectations..but can any other team claim losses only to teams ranked 1-2, 1-3 or 1-4 depending which poll you prefer to use. Remember, the Pac 10 fared poorly vs the Mountain West. The team that might earn the automatic bid to the BCS from the Pac 10 lost by eleventy-billion to the Big 10 champ. Does that mean USC isn't deserving? Of course not. The Trojans are more than capable of beating anyone. But voters and analysts have to use some way to differentiate between teams.
Ben (Carrollton, GA)
Rece...what did you think of GT's performance on Thursday night vs. Miami? Think they can go into Athens this weekend and come out with the W?
Rece Davis (4:26 PM)
I would imagine it got Georgia's attention. The Dogs have appeared a little disinterested in their last couple of games. If they don't find the fire, they'll be sorry when Dwyer and the Tech running game rolls in. The D matches up pretty well with the Dogs too. Tech DL should have advantage on UGA offensive line.
Zaid (Austin)
I dont understand how OU (given they beat OSU) can move ahead of us. We have a harder schedule, and not to mention we beat them by double digits on a neutral site, while they were #1... we beat OSU too, so how can an OU victory push them past us?
Rece Davis (4:28 PM)
I can't go with you on the tougher schedule part. TCU and Cincinnati are far better non-conference wins than anything Texas has. However, you did play Missouri and they haven't yet. I'm not arguing for them or against them. I'm just presenting the evidence. Let's be honest. There's no definitive right answer. Both teams are excellent and deserving of a shot.
Jim (Stillwater)
So comical, that OU beat Tech by too much. If they had beat Tech by a little bit then everyone would still think we had a 3 way tie. Since OU beat Tech by 50 they actually hurt themselves!! Post this now Rece and see the horror in your faulty logic.
Rece Davis (4:30 PM)
Jim, I said it wasn't my logic. I clearly stated I'm still looking at it as if it was a three way tie. I had a colleague who brought it up from the other standpoint. I was just posting it for discussion. I look at it as a 3-way tie at the moment. Head to head is always my first criterion. I can't use it here. So I go to the next set of criteria. The thing that makes me uneasy is that if Baylor beats Texas Tech, I'd say it's Texas in a no-brainer. There's really no reason the Baylor Texas Tech game should have that big an impact. Maybe it won't for some. But for me it will. For the record, I still evaluate this on the basis of it being a 3-way tie.
Joel (Tempe)
C'Mon Rece, answer the Tebow question. You know he's overhyped.
Rece Davis (4:31 PM)
Reasonable minds can differ. He's a great, great player.
Common Sense (non-BCS World)
OU plays FL in NC, USC plays TX in Fiesta Bowl. Split National Championship considering there is no justifiable reason to put OU over TX or FL over USC?
Rece Davis (4:31 PM)
You know...THAT could happen.
Glen, Pensacola Florida
Rece, can you tell Eric that a team that is not rated at the beginning of the season based on what they did or didn't do in the previous season has no bearing on how good they gel midway through or close to the end! Case in point....ALA Freaking Bama! So to say that USC has beaten more top 25 teams is incorrect! Florida played the then rated #4 LSU, #6 Georgia, #25 South Carolina..whatever # FSU will be at and not to mention the #1 team currently in the system! You can't eat an orange and expect it to taste like an apple! Your thoughts?
Rece Davis (4:35 PM)
Glen, I think everybody is so passionate about our great game that we all tend to find evidence that backs our inclinations. the challenge to voters and guys like me is to find both sides and have reasonable and fair debate. I think you make an excellent point. Teams change. What they were when you played them should count for something because each game has an impact on the rest of the season. Does anyone really believe that Georgia struggles with ky and Auburn if they'd beaten Fla or Alabama. does anyone think Clemson would be searching for a coach if they'd beaten Alabama 34-10 instead of losing by that score. Maybe they do. I think there are certain games that impact teams the rest of the way. It certainly impacts their ranking.
brian (garden city mi)
Will auburn give alabama a run in the iron bowl this year or is this the year the tide get revenge for the previous six?
Rece Davis (4:36 PM)
Brian, I think Auburn will come out with their hair on fire. If they hang around, the pressure mounts on alabama. If the Tide jumps to a lead, I think it would be tough for Auburn to come back. But don't underestimate the confidence with which Auburn will play having won the last 6 meetings.
Brendan, Homewood IL
Why is it that no one is putting Shonn Greene in their top 5? I know the Hawkeyes are an average team but I feel he should at least go to New York. Can you help answer why he is getting no love?
Rece Davis (4:37 PM)
You answered it Brendan. He's had a remarkable season for an average team. There are guys who are having remarkable seasons on excellent teams. he's an all American to me but not a Heisman finalist.
Freddie ( Los Angeles )
Rece, now that espn has the rights to the bcs do you expect your cohorts to tow the company line and silence themselves regarding the ridiculous bcs system and the obvious need for a playoff? Also, what a yr. this would be for a plus 1 eh? Bama/Fl. winner vs. OU and TX vs. USC ....yeah that wouldn't suck much.
Rece Davis (4:38 PM)
For those who believe as you seem to, they won't silence themselves nor will anyone ask them to tone it down. Credibility in analysis is something that's priceless. You're right...a seeded plus one would be exciting this season...and most seasons.
Joe (Indy)
Excuse me? Florida's loss is irrelevant? We get beat on the head throughout the season, "Every Game Matters", "in the BCS, the regular season IS the playoffs." But that loss is irrelevant? Come on...Florida paid no price for that simply because they can run up the score on substandard competition. I don't understand why they get a pass...
Rece Davis (4:41 PM)
I knew when I typed that someone would jump on it. I should've been more clear. It's irrelevant as it pertains to Texas and Oklahoma. The rest of Florida's resume is so strong, the Gators wouldn't be left out for a Big 12 rematch. They're also substantially ahead of USC and Penn State. All I meant was that arguing about whether they should be in front or behind Texas and OU right now doesn't matter because they'll get a shot at a team in front of them---provided that Alabama doesn't stumble against Auburn. And that would propel them into one of the two spots in the title game.
Glen, Pensacola Florida
Rece - how can there be a split national title when the AP has Alabama and Florida ranked #1 and #2 respectively? If the BCS has UF in the BCS NC Game and the AP has them ranked #2 right now..there is no reason that the AP would jump any team above a team that beat there #1 on the way to winning the NC! Your thoughts?
Rece Davis (4:42 PM)
Voters could change their minds...or choose to make a statement to the BCS if they feel that USC or Texas or Oklahoma was unfairly overlooked. We had a split title in 2003. Different circumstances for sure, but it happened.
jon (dubuque, IA)
I have to agree with Brendan, greene deserves the spot, not the heisman, but he has nearly identical stats that 8-4 arkansas' darren mcfadden had, heisman runner-up 2007, but greene has a better yard per carry average, hawks are 8-4
Rece Davis (4:43 PM)
You certainly make a reasonable point. My position would be that last year was a bit of an oddity in that the teams at the top really didn't have a player who fit the Heisman criteria. This year, those teams are full of them. It makes a difference.
Hank (Orlando)
Rece, is Georgia Tech's win over Miami a superb performance or just a lack of experience on the Miami defense?
Rece Davis (4:44 PM)
Truth is in the middle, Hank. It was a little bit of both.
Will Muschamp (Austin)
Rece, Did I make the right choice by staying in Austin. Would i regret not going back to the SEC?
Rece Davis (4:45 PM)
900K to be an assistant...and waiting on one of the best jobs in America to boot? Seems like a win-win...as long as Mack doesn't coach as long as Bowden or Paterno.
JD (Kirkland, WA)
If you had to call one upset for which rivalry game would you give the nod to the underdog? Texas A&M at Texas West Virginia at Pittsburgh Mississippi State at Mississippi Colorado at Nebraska Florida at Florida State Georgia Tech at Georgia Kansas vs. Missouri Oklahoma at Oklahoma State Auburn at Alabama Oregon at Oregon State South Carolina at Clemson
Rece Davis (4:46 PM)
Oregon.
Liz (Memphis)
With a win over LSU and a potential win over MSU, Ole Miss can play in which bowl against who?
Rece Davis (4:46 PM)
Cotton vs Texas Tech is my bet.
Ken (Detroit)
Terrelle Pryor: Real deal or overhyped?
Rece Davis (4:47 PM)
Very good...needs to improve passing. Remarkable at how tough he is to get on the ground when he's scrambling. He seems to do a good job keeping his eyes down field. I like him enough to say he's the real deal, but I'm not a big fan of his throwing motion. A lot of air winds up under some of those passes.
Sam (Austin)
Everytime I've watched Final Verdict, Coach Holtz always seemed to be ragging on Colt McCoy. Why does he dislike Colt so much?
Rece Davis (4:49 PM)
Sam, He likes Colt a lot. he got in touch with Colt to let him know he was just making a point. Lou loves a tough QB who can run. Thus, he's a huge fan of Colt McCoy.
Jon (Dubuque,IA)
if you are right about the oregon upset, which i hope you are, will there be 2 big ten teams in the bcs or will boise take the spot?
Rece Davis (4:50 PM)
My guess is that it's good news for buckeye nation. Now, I was just asked which one was most likely to me. All are somewhat likely, I just think Oregon has the best shot among those mentioned.
Darryl (Oakland,CA)
Florida's credibility took a nose dive when they scheduled The Citadel, didn't it? What if USC scheduled The Citadel, wouldn't everyone be in an uproar if that happened? Why does Florida get a free pass? USC is a more talented better team, but will not get to show it...again!!!!
Rece Davis (4:51 PM)
It was that or an open date. i think Urban just didn't want the open date that late in the season. At least that's my guess. Look, they played Miami and face Fla State out of conference. With an SEC (or Pac 10, Big10, Big 12) schedule, one big non-conference game is enough. they had two on the schedule...plus Hawaii. No issue with Florida's schedule.
Johnny (Haymarket, VA)
Does the ACC have any chance to win a BCS bowl?!?!?
Rece Davis (4:52 PM)
They always have a chance. BC and VT..the two most likely ACC championship game contenders are challenged offensively, but are very good on D and special teams. That will give them a chance.
raleigh
how sad would it be to see a Texas or USC team in the BCS Championship without even winning their conference?
Rece Davis (4:53 PM)
Frankly, it wouldn't bother me because both would've fallen victim to a tiebreaker. It wouldn't bother me as much as being forced to include Missouri or Cincinnati or ACC team just because they won a conference title.
Julio Jones Foley Al
Will I be the best wr in College football next year?
Rece Davis (4:53 PM)
If you find the right QB to get you the ball.
Darryl (Oakland)
USC is not allowed to schedule Hawaii and The Citadel in the same season. It would be a farce, just like Florida's schedule is this year...to the trained eye that is.
Rece Davis (4:55 PM)
You have a right to your opinion, Darryl. This "semi-trained" eye says that Fla State and Miami are better than Virginia and Notre Dame. Georgia and Alabama are better than Ohio State. But, we can agree to disagree.
Michael C. (Lubbock)
And if I decide to go pro............
Rece Davis (4:55 PM)
stardom and lots of cash...
Andy (Salt Lake City)
Is Utah good enough to beat Florida or Alabama in the Sugar Bowl (if that is where they end up)?
Rece Davis (4:56 PM)
I think Utah can match up with those teams in a one-game setting. Veteran QB, salty defense...tough RBs...absolutely. Do you want a shot at Urban? That would be good for subplots all through December.
Dez Bryant (Lufkin, TX)
Will I win the Biletnikoff?
Rece Davis (4:57 PM)
Sorry, Dez. Maybe next yr. You will be close though.
Gary (New York)
Rece - I appreciate your time, but quit screwing around with Darryl from Oakland and please get to my question. Thanks!
Rece Davis (4:57 PM)
Let me try to find it, Gary.
Mo (Dallas)
So you know who is speaking, I'm an OU fan. I'm so tired of fans from all schools (OU and Texas included) about who, what, when......let's just call like it is, the BCS stinks and in the Big XII South two teams left out are gonna get screwed, just like life it is not fair. I just wish people would admit that there are arguments on every side instead being so frickin biased towards their school, that they are so sure there rationale is right. It's B c S!
Rece Davis (4:58 PM)
Bravo.
Bradford (Boise, ID)
Better freshmen QB: Terrelle Pryor or Kellen Moore?
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
Moore more productive...but an unfair comparison because Pryor's level of competition is significantly higher.
Nick Bates (Kansas City)
Bill Snyder? Seriously?
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
He's the only guy who has ever won there. But I do find the "back to the future" move a bit odd.
sooner girl (ok)
take a question from a girl.......
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
fire away...we've got a couple of minutes.
Tricia (Muncie)
Do you think Ball State could beat the ACC or Big East Champions?
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
They certainly COULD...Tricia, but like many games it would depend on which team...matchups, etc. I think Cincinnati, BC and VT would be very tough draws for Ball State. But with Nate Davis's big arm and big play ability, an upset wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.
Sooner0233 OKC
Rece, is sooner girl hot?
sooner girl
I posted this earlier, but there is a possible scenario that would put OU/Tex in the national championship game
Rece Davis (5:03 PM)
Sooner girl...let's try it and see. Ala and Fla lose this week. Fla then beats Alabama. That gets both of them out of the way. OU or Texas wins Big 12. The issue then becomes...rematch or Big 12 vs USC or Penn State. Our BCS guy says it would be tough for USC to jump one of those Big 12 teams. Short answer...yes.
Justin (NY, NY)
Who has Georgia beaten (this year or last) that makes you say they are definitively better than Ohio State?
Rece Davis (5:06 PM)
Just my opinion. I could be wrong. Guys it was fun. It's great that the passion is all stirred up this time of year. Don't forget to vote for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance. Happy Thanksgiving.
