Pontiac Game Changing Performance

Davis will be chatting about the season as well as the Pontiac Game Changing Performances seen during the games.
Rece Davis (4:01 PM)
Hi everybody. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you remember to vote for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance of the Week. Great candidates. No questions about Texas/Oklahoma today, right? Just kidding. Let's get started.
scotland
hi rece i hope u r well, im a college football fan from scotland and fairly new to this, i just thought id say that id luv to see a florida- oklahoma championship game what do u think? i think you are a great presenter and i love lou holtz as well, best wishes stuart.
Rece Davis (4:03 PM)
Stuart, Great to see our sport is traveling well. Florida-Oklahoma is very possible. Just a couple of wins away from it. It would be a great offensive showcase, but I think the Gator D could get a stop or two. I think the score would be in the high 20's low 30's rather than the 50-40 type scores we've seen in the Big 12.
Joe (Philly)
Hey Rece here's a great topic for discussion, how overrated the SEC was this year. Florida and Alabama are great, but the rest of the league is bad, which was on display this weekend when the "lowly" ACC went 3-1 versus them, with the Wake being 2-0 vs the SEC this year.
Rece Davis (4:04 PM)
This weekend was a win overall for the ACC. The most significant win was GT over UGa. Don't forget Wake held off Ole Miss early this season too. That was before the Rebels hit their stride. I think Ole Miss would clobber them if they played again. but they don't so the ACC gets bragging rights there.
John (Oxford)
Will Ole Miss or Georgia get the Capital One Bowl bid? Which team do you think is more deserving?
Rece Davis (4:06 PM)
I don't know about deserving, John, but it makes more sense to send Ga to Cap 1...best record other than Alabama or Florida and to send Ole Miss to the Cotton to keep a team from the SEC West in Dallas. Ole Miss gets a higher profile matchup in the Cotton, probably Texas Tech
Dylan new bedford
rece do u think that it will be bc and cincinati in the orange bowl
Rece Davis (4:07 PM)
Yes I do. But VT got payback last yr after BC beat them in the regular season, but I think BC will win Saturday.
Vincent(Tulsa)
If OU/Texas where to play again in the post season, who do you think would have the edge and why ?
Rece Davis (4:12 PM)
Vincent, this question will get me in a world of trouble. I've gone back and forth on this issue for a while. Let's take one thing at a time. First, to break that 3-way tie, I think you have to include the Texas Tech results. In the preseason, I picked OU to win the national championship. I've thought all year that they had the better team, but I thought Texas was close. But with OU's injuries on D and their somewhat inconsistent play on defense, I'm not so sure that Texas wouldn't have a slight edge. I think they're a little healthier on D. They've been more consistent on D in my opinion. I do think that OU has the best offense in college football.
Pete (Los Angeles)
It is no secret we are tired of the Rose Bowl and wanted to get a challenge and some national respect by dominating the Sugar or Fiest bowl.... how is my team going to get amped up for another (2nd rate) Rose Bowl?
Rece Davis (4:12 PM)
Because that's what championship level programs are supposed to do.
jon (Denver)
SEC fans are already grumbling that the loser of the SEC Championship will likely get another lowly non-BCS opponent... Do you think Utah can hang?
Rece Davis (4:13 PM)
Sure. Playing Utah is different than playing Hawaii of last year. Utah is more capable physically. I don't think Utah would make it through an SEC or Big 12 schedule without 2 or 3 losses. But in a one-shot deal with a long time to prepare and the possibility of having the other team think "it's just Utah' (big mistake) the Utes are more than capable of springing the upset.
Zaid (Austin)
Rece, Do you think since we got hosed over, Heisman voters might take that into consideration and give more votes to Colt... i mean the most deserving cant get hosed over twice by members of the same team (OU) can they???
Rece Davis (4:15 PM)
Zaid, hosed is a relative term. I won't cast my Heisman ballot with any thought like that in mind. Both OU and Texas were deserving. Each could make very strong cases. Basically, you can use arguments that are fair and reasonable to boost whichever side of the debate you are on.
dan (aiken)
i may have asked this already idk my comp sucks but if mizzou beats ou and florida wins a close game in ot wit bama could there be a florida bama rematch for the nc?
Rece Davis (4:15 PM)
I'd be really surprised. It's possible, but I think a Missouri win will send Texas to the national championship game.
Michael (Atlanta, GA)
I'm so bummed Rece. We had a tougher schedule than OU, we lost by a single play during an extremely tough road game, and WE BEAT OU, and yet they're going? It's like OU writes a new script to screw us every year. Embarrassing our conference in BCS games is particularly painful.
Rece Davis (4:17 PM)
Michael, I can't agree with the tougher schedule part. OU beat TCU and Cincy out of conference. That's better than Rice and Arkansas. Texas did play Missouri, OU and TT didn't. It's frustrating. I'd just keep up the campaign...root for Mizzou...and hope for a big bit of voter backlash to move Texas up regardless of OU outcome. It's a real longshot, but it's better than no shot.
Zaid (Austin)
So at this point, who is your heisman winner... and if u say Tebow i am boycotting you for life
Rece Davis (4:18 PM)
I'm not saying...but you won't have to boycott. I don't make a final decision, however, until every game has been played by all guys I believe are contenders.
Steve from Cali
Why would a Texas team not winning there conference go to the title game over a team like USC or Penn St? Georgia was ahead of LSU last year in the polls but were jumped because LSU won the SEC. Are the voters gonna forget about that this year?
Rece Davis (4:22 PM)
Steve, I don't buy the conference championship thing being anything other than a tiebreaker among similar teams. For instance, it had to work in LSU's favor over UGA last yr because they were in the same conference. But I don't think you eliminate a team with a better overall resume', like Texas, simply because they didn't get voted into their title game. Remember, Texas tied for the best overall record in the conference and beat both of the teams in title game. Patently unfair to omit them in that scenario simply on the basis of not winning their conference. Had Oregon State beaten Oregon, would you have advocated not considering USC because they weren't conference champs? Before you say, "they would've been co-champs" there can be only one conference champion representative in the BCS eyes. That would've been the Beavers. That's not the case now, obviously, but it's the reason I believe it's still reasonable to consider Texas.
Gabe (Cibolo)
Rece, How is it that Colt McCoy could be slipping behind Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford for the Heisman. All the young fellow has done is take a mediocre Texas team and turn them into a BCS team. That is not to take away from any other UT players but he is the heart and soul of this team. Bradford and Tebow have huge playmakers on their team.......Texas is a team.
Rece Davis (4:22 PM)
He's not behind on at least one ballot.
Willie (Southern Oklahoma)
Rece, I am obviously an OU fan but I love all Big 12 teams and as long as OU isn't playing OKST or TU I generally root for them. I truly believe that if OU and TU played 10 times this year each one would have won 5 games, the same might also be said about OKST playing the big 3 that they came up short on. The Big 12 South is just to strong for its own good, is there anyway that the Big 12 might rearrange the teams so that there is a more balanced North and South or at least get rid of the North and South all together and just have a group of teams?
Rece Davis (4:25 PM)
Coach Holtz said they should just let Texas and OU play again. I'm sure Mike Leach would've loved that. I don't think they'll change things. As soon as you change it, Nebraska would become a power again and you'd have the East loaded instead of the West or something(if you made a change along geographical lines). If you don't have divisions and just have the top 2 teams play, I think that just opens up even more problems. Before we dismiss the North, remember, AP top 3 teams are just 5-5 in Big 12 title games. Major upsets have been plentiful. Texas over Neb; A&M over K-State; K-State over Oklahoma; Col over Texas...
John (Fresno)
Rece, please tell the delusional USC fans who think that a team who struggled to beat powerhouses such as Cal, Stanford, and Arizona, that they should probably be worried about Penn State instead of getting embarrassed by Florida, Bama, etc.
Rece Davis (4:26 PM)
John, I'll let you say it. From my standpoint, that Trojan Defense looks salty enough to hang with anyone.
Derrick (Decatur)
If OU barely beats Mizzou or "wins ugly" you don't think that enough voters (only 20 or so are needed out of 160 plus) could flip-flop Texas and OU to put Texas in BCS Game -- given that Texas smashed a healthier Mizzoue team?
Rece Davis (4:27 PM)
Possible, Derrick. With voters..it's tough to account for what "backlash" there might be.
Jason (Dallas, TX)
Rece, Has anyone thought about the Mizzou loss last week, as a reason Texas lost ground in the computers?
Rece Davis (4:28 PM)
I'm sure it had a bit of an impact. How much? I'd have to check with Brad Edwards. More likely, Oklahoma beat a better opponent by far than Texas did this week. OU had already taken its "hit" for playing A&M.
Zach (Muncie, IN)
first off i dont think TCU deserves to be ahead of ball state....BUT anyways...2 questions...what was chris fowler thinking when he didnt include BSU in at least the top 25? also...shouldnt boise state or ball state be going to the orange bowl over cinci??? i thought there was a rule that if someone not in a bcs bowl ranked higher than the conference champ...they got it... p.s. can we stop talking about TEXAS!!!
Rece Davis (4:28 PM)
That rule applies once. Utah is the trump card there.
Adam ATL
Why does noboby at ESPN like GA last year or this year?
Rece Davis (4:31 PM)
We're mad at them for wearing black jerseys and breaking tradition. No, not really Adam. Everybody thinks we don't like their team. I said on the air once if I had to pick a coach that I knew would be the best influence on my son, I'd choose Richt. If that's not praise, I don't know what is. Fact is, the Dogs played as if they were entitled to win. They got smoked in their two biggest conference games of the year and Ga Tech was tougher than them Saturday. We like Georgia fine. But we have a passion for the game not the same passion for teams that fans share. It's our job to be as fair as we can possibly be. When Georgia bounces back...and they will, they'll get plenty of love.
zach(muncie)
could ball state beat utah
Rece Davis (4:31 PM)
could? maybe. Would? I don't think so.
Zaid (Austin)
sorry for blowing you up, but realistically, how much of a shot does Mizzou have to upset OU?
Rece Davis (4:32 PM)
Not much based on what I saw in the Mizzou/KU game from that defense. But as Lou says, "it's a different team every week, coach."
Damon (Massillon, OH)
Rece where do you see Ohio State going?
Rece Davis (4:32 PM)
Fiesta
Jose (Austin)
Rece, i'm a huge longhorn fan what would you recommend to do at a time like this?
Rece Davis (4:33 PM)
Root like heck for Missouri. Get on that facebook page or hire airplanes or buy commercial time and encourage more voters to change their votes. All's fair when campaigning for BCS title spot.
John (Oxford)
Are the Big 12 offenses that good or are the defenses that bad? After watching the Oklahoma/Oklahoma State i'm beginning to think the defenses are just that bad. There were more wide open receivers in that one game than I have seen in any other game all season. I could have passed for 400 yards in that game. It looked like two junior high defenses playing.
Rece Davis (4:34 PM)
Big 12 O's are excellent. Best in nation. The defenses are either bad or in OU's case have underachieved. OU was brilliant vs TT. Missed 2 tackles all night I believe Stoops told me. Vs Kansas, Ok State, Cincinnati, Texas...not so much. But let's be fair...a lot of that has to do with injuries. I think Texas' D is pretty good right now.
David (Gainesville, FL)
I graduated from Florida and am starting graduate research at Bama in the summer, my advisor is already hating me! So who wins? Florida or Bama?
Rece Davis (4:35 PM)
You. You've got a stake on both sides.
Ben (Carrollton, GA)
Should Paul Johnson get Coach of the Year consideration?
Rece Davis (4:35 PM)
He is a worthy candidate for sure. Tech is very tough. a reflection of their coach for sure.
Ronn (Nashville)
What was the game changing play of the Iron Bowl? Roll Tide!!
Rece Davis (4:36 PM)
Alabama running on to the field.
Damon (Massillon)
Rece do you see Beanie returning or going to the NFL?
Rece Davis (4:37 PM)
If he's projected to go high enough in the draft, he should leave. Almost every other position, I think guys benefit from staying in school. But with Beanie's injury history, and the fact that RBs only have so many hits to take in their bodies, I'd advise him to get paid.
Steve (New Orleans)
Rece, Is is possible for there to be 3 teams from the same conference in BCS bowls?
Rece Davis (4:39 PM)
The rules say two. However, there was the scenario a couple of weeks ago under which Missouri could've won the Big 12 and gained the automatic bid and the other two Big 12 South schools that were edged out of the title game could been left at 1-2 in the standings. That would've been some kind of BCS mess to sort out.
Kevin (Boise):
Do you think that stafford or moreno go to the NFL draft?
Rece Davis (4:39 PM)
I do. But that's just a guess.
Freddie ( Los Angeles )
How sad is a system/sport when you have to politic and pray to the computer gods for your team to get proper representation in the post season. CFB has reached the sublimely ridiculous w/ the B.c.S. and is about a credible w/ its rankings as gymnastics/figure skating is w/ it's judging.
Rece Davis (4:42 PM)
I understand your frustration Freddie. But think of it this way. Prior to the BCS, the Rose Bowl would've been the same. Sugar Bowl would've been Alabama/Florida winner vs Texas(or 2nd best Big 12). Fiesta: OU/Missouri vs Alabama/Fla loser. It wouldn't have settled much. So at least we have a shot at seeing something close to a true national title game.
John (Oxford)
Ole Miss leads the nation in tackles for loss. Do they have the best defensive line in the country?
Rece Davis (4:42 PM)
A very good one. They'll have some alums playing in the NFL.
ashley atlanta, ga
Texas over Florida in NCG even if Florida beats Bama? What in the world?
Rece Davis (4:43 PM)
Highly unlikely. Possibility is virtually nil I think. I was offering advice to Texas fans in an effort to edge out OU...not Fla. But nothing is impossible
Adam (Raleigh):
How good to you see the ncsu wolfpack being next year? And what do you think of Russell Wilson? Is he gonna be as good as he looked this year?
Rece Davis (4:44 PM)
He's changed that team. They showed a lot of character to become bowl eligible after their start. He's the kind of guy that can help the Pack make a big leap next year.
Paul (Dayton, TN)
I am a big Gator fan and I wanted to weigh in on the Oklahoma and Texas debate. Whould it be fair to Florida when they beat Alabama this weekend to be ranked under Alabama (NO) so I think Texas should be ranked higher than Oklahoma.
Rece Davis (4:45 PM)
Paul, you're right, but this is a different debate. Under that logic, it's unfair for Texas Tech to be ranked below Texas but they are.
Joe(Salt Lake City)
Reece where do you think UTAH will play and against who?
Rece Davis (4:46 PM)
Sugar vs loser of SEC championship game
Apopka, FL
Rece, is it possible for Florida to beat Alabama and be left out of the BCS Title Game? Apparently some think so.
Rece Davis (4:47 PM)
I'd be surprised...stunned..but I guess it's not impossible. Let's say voters revolted and voted Texas #1. Ou wins and is #2. Fla #3. It could happen, but almost certainly won't.
Chris (Memphis)
First reaction to Lane and Monte Kiffin at Tennessee
Rece Davis (4:49 PM)
wait and see. He might be a Bob Stoops type hire. He might not be. I think it's a bigger gamble than many seem to think. His resume' is not extensive in terms of being a coordinator calling plays, familiarity with the SEC, etc. But he's certainly been around great football minds all of his life.
Brian (Boston)
Is it at all possible to have Texas play the loser of the SEC Championship game in the sugar? I don't think anyone would complain about a Texas vs Alabama/Florida game.
Rece Davis (4:50 PM)
I don't think the Fiesta would let them pass when selecting teams.
Paul (Dayton, TN)
Do you think the Florida and Alabama game is a better game or do you think the Big 12 matchup's were better games.
Rece Davis (4:52 PM)
Alabama Florida is going to be a great game. It will be a far different style than the games we've seen in the Big 12. Now it's possible if Florida gets the tempo it wants...grabs a quick lead and forces Alabama to play catch up that the Gators could put up a big number. I think it's more likely that it's a violent, physical clash in which offenses make some plays, but the defenses make them earn those plays. I think it has the potential to be the best game of the season in terms of having great offensive moments and stellar defensive play.
Andrew ,Ohio
Hey is my messages getting through Just Wondering
Rece Davis (4:53 PM)
Yes. They are asking you to change "is" to "are." Kidding Andrew. I'm answering as many as I can.
David (Los Angeles, CA)
Rece, If you were the President of Notre Dame would you fire Charlie Weis after this years performance?
Rece Davis (4:55 PM)
First, I'm not president. But I'd take the buyout into consideration. More importantly, I'd evaluate whether I think he's lost the team. His track record isn't extensive enough to show he could "get it back." If I thought that progress could be shown next year, I'd keep him. If I thought he'd lost them, he'd be gone.
Kevin (San Diego)
Reece, did Pete Carroll wrong somebody in your family? All year long you've been dissing the Trojans, and I'm wondering if you are watching the same games as I. No way ANYONE, including the powder-puff teams in the Big-12 could score 20 on them. Not a chance.
Rece Davis (5:00 PM)
How in the world have I been dissing the Trojans? I think they are the most talented team in college football. I think they have the best defense. Arguing relative resume's isn't dissing them. I would make them the favorite against anyone they play. But that's not all this is about. This is also about earning your spot. This year, the Pac 10 let them down. Their best win is against the second place team from the Big 10--which also was down. I have no doubt they could beat anyone, but their resume' doesn't match their immense talent. All I'm saying is that it isn't right to give USC a nod because they have the most future all pros. It's only fair to note that USC lost to a team that got smoked by the Big 10 champ. My only point has been it's not fair to overlook USC's missteps when magnifying everyone else's. That's all. I think Carroll is a brilliant coach. I even like USC's uniforms. I have nothing against them.
Gavin (Tulsa,ok)
Hey Rece what do you think about President elect Obamas stance with the BCS? Can/should he get involved?
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
Shouldn't. More important issues.
Ryan (West Palm Beach)
Quick, name the best win other than Georgia that Alabama's had all year...
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
Ole Miss. more pertinent...name worst loss.
Brad (Sooner in Longhorn country)
Hey Rece, I love watching you guys on Saturdays! Do you see the best two teams in the country playing for the National Championship this year?
Rece Davis (5:04 PM)
Thanks, Brad. All four of the likely candidates are great teams and deserving. I think you can add USC and Penn State to that mix too. It's hard to say "best." But I think we have a decent shot of having two very deserving teams play for the title..and perhaps the others playing in hopes of getting the AP crown. Thanks for all of the great questions. Don't forget to vote for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance. Take care.
