Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
Hello folks. Five down and five to go. What's on your mind?
I don't get the new car. Saturday night Tony Stewart easily had the best car early and WAS able to drive up through the field to the front. Then, was a non factor later. JG couldn't drive up through the field yet was strong once out front. No one could pass Burton who had 4 old tires. What is going on?....what needs to happen so that people can pass....and people who don't take any tires can't stay out front?
Terry Blount (2:02 PM)
The new car is super sensitive to track changes, so how it handles changes during the race as the temperatures goes down at night. The team that can stay ahead of the changes if usually the one that wins.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Terry, I know I keep asking this question but any new information about announcement of sponsors for Yates racing next year?
Terry Blount (2:03 PM)
Nick, you clearly are Yates' biggest fan. But no, no news on where things stand. Sponsors are harder to come by now than ever before.
If you are Dale Jr. how are you feeling right now?
Terry Blount (2:04 PM)
Disappointed because I know I had good enough equipment to compete for the title, but things didn't fall my way.
justin (durham nc)
with an announcement this week pending. any ideas of where scott riggs has decided to drive in 09....thanks and love the chat every week..you guys do a great job
Terry Blount (2:05 PM)
If could be DEI or it could by Ganassi. If I'm Chip, I'd take AJ because I think he has more upside potential, but Chip may opt for more experience.
Recent tire tests @ Atlanta ? How'd they pan out ? Will we see a debacle like in the spring ?
Terry Blount (2:06 PM)
It has to be better than the spring race. Goodyear will use a softer tire this time, but tires with this car will continue to be an issue at times.
Another question about sponsors..Does Keselowski's nationwide car have its new sponsor yet?
Terry Blount (2:06 PM)
No. Earnhardt still is looking.
Is the COT that hard on tires? Seems like there are more tire problems every week than I remember for the last few years. Is there really a difference between the early in the year race and the later in the year races at the same tracks as far as tire wear?
Terry Blount (2:08 PM)
We've definitely seen more tire problems with this car. It puts additional loading on the right side. The long range answer is to develop a wider tire, but that will take a while.
Kris (West Allis, WI)
Will Tony Stewart drive any Nationwide series races next year? If so, for who? Harvick, JR Motorsports?
Terry Blount (2:09 PM)
I doubt if Tony knows how many NW races he'll run next year, but it probably will be fewer than he has done in the past. He has a lot more things to worry about now in running his own team. And frankly, the fewer Cup guys in NW races the better as far as I'm concerned.
Terry, Another Tire question. Do the current tires still have the inner liner? If so why all the catastrophic tire failures we are seeing? When these tires go on these cars --- WOW!
Terry Blount (2:11 PM)
Yes, they still have the liner, but if the tires blows instead of just leaking air, it still causes a big explosion.
Ed, Hartford Ct
The Chase is a joke. We have two people with ONLY 2 wins who could win the title as opposed to Kyle Bush's 8 wins (and he's out of it): 1) #48-Jimmie Johnson 5878 [5 wins] 2) #31-Jeff Burton 5809 -69 [2 wins] 3) #16-Greg Biffle 5792 -86 [2 wins] 4) #99-Carl Edwards 5710 -168 [6 wins] 5) #07-Clint Bowyer 5693 -185 [1 win] 6) #29-Kevin Harvick 5671 -207 7) #20-Tony Stewart 5650 -228 [1 win] 8) #24-Jeff Gordon 5633 -245 9) #18-Kyle Busch 5552 -326 [8 wins]
Terry Blount (2:12 PM)
Well thanks for all those stats Ed. I agree that more emphasis on winning would help, like a 50-pt. bonus for winning a race.
Why is NASCAR so stubborn about making rule changes to the new car? Are they truly that happy with the single file racing?
Terry Blount (2:14 PM)
NASCAR officials don't want to make a change that will cause the teams to start over and lose what they've learned. The last few races have shown major improvement in the racing. But I do think adding a little front downforce would have been a good thing for 2009. NASCAR has decided not to do anything for next season.
Just saw a report that there are no planned changes for the COT for next year. Not even for the splitter? Seems way to low as they look like they are being ground off on every car. Will that be addressed?
Terry Blount (2:15 PM)
Apparently not. NASCAR officials say most of the teams want to keep things the way they are. I have my doubts about that.
I know it has only been one year but do you see Dale Jr finishing his career at Hendrick? Also what are the chances Tony Jr becomes crew chief of a different Hendrick team?
Terry Blount (2:16 PM)
I think Tony Jr. either says with Dale Jr. and crew chiefs at a different organization. I don't know about the rest of his career, but Dale Jr. isn't leaving Hendrick any time soon.
Todd (Big Lick, VA)
I'm very close to a certain member of the wood brothers... Realistically, how much longer do they have in the sport?
Terry Blount (2:17 PM)
Not long unless they merge with another team.
You probably wouldn't touch this question w/ a 50 ft. stick, but, what's the latest on the discrimination suit w/ NASCAR ?
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
You're right, I don't. But there isn't anything new at the moment.
Thanks for taking the time to answer all the questions you do.
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
No problem Dave. I always enjoy getting a chance to hear what's on the minds of the fans.
I heard a report on 36 race fields. How likely is that to happening? How soon could that happen? Would 36 car fields be better than 44 cars showing up at most races and only 1 car being sent home?
Terry Blount (2:21 PM)
I don't think this is close to happening. The economy is going to hurt car counts, but that's a huge reduction for Cup. However, going to 28 in the truck series makes more sense.
If you could approve one, just one, change to the COT what would it be? And of course why?
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
Make an adjustment to the splitter to give the car more front downforce. That would make the car easier to turn and provide better side-by-side racing.
Any word on Jeremy Mayfield's plans for 2009?
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
Jeremy still could be in the running for the 41 car at Ganassi.
Who wins at the Pretty Paperclip this weekend? Does Denny have a shot - he won in the Spring at Martinsville.
Terry Blount (2:26 PM)
He has a shot, but I wouldn't bet against Johnson.
Rumors on Rusty coming back for one more year..purley rumor, or is there any validity ?
Terry Blount (2:26 PM)
A totally ridiculous rumor.
what are your thoughts on team mergers?
Terry Blount (2:28 PM)
I don't really like it, but it's a by-product of difficult economic times and increased cocts of competing at the Cup level. .
How much truth to the rumor that Ganassi and petty are merging>
Terry Blount (2:29 PM)
Ganassi's peeps have told me several times they have no plans to merge in for 2009, but that was before we entered this econmic turmoil.
Jeff (Rochester NY)
How bad were Letarte's decisions to get gas at one stop and then get four tires at the end?
Terry Blount (2:30 PM)
Gordon's loves Steve and stands by him, but something is off there and needs fixing.
Ed, Hartford Ct
Scott Speed failed to qualify at Charlotte. Any Idea what happened?
Terry Blount (2:33 PM)
No one qualified at Charlotte. It rained.
With the COT coming to the Nationwide series in 2010, how many teams do think will make the jump to Sprint Cup seeing that the cost to produce the cars will be about the same.
Terry Blount (2:34 PM)
There's aren't many full-time NW teams left. But I don't see many moving up other than JR Motorsports.
chris (new jersey)
lets be serious Jeff Burton is not going to win the title. He wins Saturday cuz JJ has a bad night .Michael Jordan had a few off nights. Every nascar fan knows JJ is the man to beat and to think 6th place is bad night.
Terry Blount (2:36 PM)
Johnson still is the favorite, but he's a long way from having this in the bag with five races to go. One DNF could change everything.
Do you think Rusty will try to move his team to Cup?
Terry Blount (2:38 PM)
He might if he thinks Steve is ready, but it's still a major investment. Believe me, the cost isn't the same even when they change the NW car. And the word is the COT NW car will have significant differences from the Cup car.
Hey Terry, Evernham says Ganassi, Colishaw says DEI. Where do you think Scott Riggs will land? and is the anouncement coming this weekend? THANKS!
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
I would be surprised if he made an announcement in Martinsville instead of a track and a larger market, but it's possible. If Scott has an offer from Chip, that's the place to go because that car has sponsorship.
Speaking of Evernham, any idea as to why he cut his chat short yesterday?
Terry Blount (2:41 PM)
No, other than the fact that Ray is a very busy man and had a show to prepare for.
I heard if Riggs goes to Ganassi, JPM wopuld get the fully sponsored car and Riggs would get the partial sponsorship from Big Red and State Water Heaters. Is that a possibility?
Terry Blount (2:43 PM)
No, Ganassi's people say JPM is staying with Big Red/Wrigley.
What are the odds that the Harvic-Edwards feud is over?
Terry Blount (2:46 PM)
They don't like each other, but I don't think you'll see another altercation this year.
enough of scott riggs ...he will be off the pace just like he is now....2009 do see any drivers switching teams for 2010?
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
Justin, let's get through 2008 before we start speculating too much on where guys are going for 2010. But I can tell you this. Truex won't stick around at DEI after next season unless things change for the better.
to justin in new york.....hes done more with nothing than most ever will....dont be suprised when he outruns ur guy or girl
Terry Blount (2:49 PM)
Nice that Scott has fans. He's a good guy.
Teresa (Bryn Mawr)
How long do you think it will take for Stewart and Newman to be competative
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
They will be competitive at some races next year, but it will take two or three years before they are competitive for a championship.
Steve (Mexico, MO)
Are we ever going to see Bobby Labonte win a race again? I feel like a sucker for being a fan of his.
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
Bobby hasn't forgotten how to drive, but Kyle Busch or Jimmie Johnson couldn't win in that car.
How bad has Edwards "clean cut" image been hurt by his actions? seems like hie is portraying an image that he really isn't.
Why do they have 12 drivers in the chase if only 10 get to go to New York for the ceremony?
Terry Blount (2:54 PM)
They added two or drivers to the Chase last year, but kept the banquet a 10-man show. Thank goodness. It's too long as it is.
Jeff (Alexandria, VA)
What is your favorite thing to eat at a track? Martinsville Hot Dog? Turkey Leg?
Terry Blount (2:55 PM)
The Martinsville dog is a classic and I've eaten far too many of them in the past.
Carl Edwards (Missouri)
Honestly, who is your favorite driver?
Terry Blount (2:56 PM)
Well fake Carl, I don't have a favorite, but thanks for asking.
How do you keep busy during the off season
Terry Blount (2:58 PM)
Golfing, boating, reading and grilling on my back deck after I get through putting up about a million Christmas lights my wife lays out for me to toss on the house and lawn.
How many titles can JJ win in his career? As many as the king or the intimidater?
Terry Blount (2:59 PM)
It's possible, but I doubt it. The Chase make it harder to dominate because one of two bad races can cost you a title. Ask Kyle Busch about that.
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
Gotta run folks. Some great questions today. Have a super week. I'm out. Peace.
