Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Keith Kidd (1:02 PM)
Hello Sportsnation!!! There are some TERRIBLE games this week. However the Monday night game should be another great one. It's another great day in the NFL and at ESPN, although it's raining in Kentucky right now. Let's get rolling with your NFL questions!
MJ (Boston)
Keith - I read you called Terence Newman a "borderline shutdown corner"...that's a joke right? Before this season, he's been lights out, he shut down everyone he's played. The guys been as good as any corner in the league. I read that borderline comment and almost fell out of my chair. I've seen every snap he's taken and he's been top 3 in the NFL since 2005. The Skins game he was about 70 percent. I did see the Scouts inc. corner rankings, so I know you guys are confused...you guys ranked Cromartie a 90, nuf said...
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
Hey, a borderline shutdown corner isn't all that bad. The grades we gave were established from last year, not this year. Thank you for reading my stuff.
Paul (Trenton, NJ)
Is Russell simply experiencing issues as a glorified rookie or does he just not have the accuracy that was touted (along with arm strength) when he was coming out?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
Russell is experiencing an offense that is trying to do way too much. I'm one of the few people that thinks this offense has some playmakers. The running game is very good and there is enough talent at WR to make plays. To me, he took a huge step back last week. But this is, like you said, basically his rookie season.
Chris (Staten Island, NY)
Keith, did Dallas give up too much for Roy Williams? Most in the media are saying yes but if he becomes a true #1 receiver, at his age I think Dallas made a good move since there's only about 10-15 of those in the entire league.
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
Time will tell. However, you have to love the fact that Jerry Jones can go from the bad PR with Pacman Jones to good PR with Roy Williams. Hopefully the Lions can maximize these picks in the draft.
Dave, MN
Hey, whats your take on LT? Is he getting old and declining or is his toe really that bad? I just traded for him in my fantasy keeper league so I need him to have another couple years left in the tank. What are your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
No, no. My take is that he's not healthy. When you look statistically at what he's done, he's still one of the leaders in most yards from scrimmage in the AFC. For me, these next two weeks could define their season. They're going to Buffalo, which is not easy and then they're going overseas to try and stop one of the most explosive offenses in the league. The win over the Patriots was huge.
Daniel (KC)
You have any information about the Chiefs just suspending Larry Johnson for Sundays game. This according to local radio station.
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
I haven't heard anything about that.
Neal Joliet, IL
Kidder-Matt Ryan is completing 58% of his passes and has a positive TD-INT ratio which are both pretty good rookie figures. Joe Flacco has a horrid TD-INT ratio but has completed 60% of his passes-albeit in a dink and dunk type offense. Still, he's been statistically accurate. Jemarcus Russell, mind you with more experience than either guy, is completing just FIFTY percent of his passes in an offense that plays as conservative as Flacco's. JeMarcus Russell, even accounting for legitimately bad circumstances is a disaster. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
Neal, another interesting thing about this is that Matt Ryan has the best supporting cast of all these guys. They're building the system around him in that offense. That play that he made against the Bears was amazing. On the flip side, the throw that Kyle Orton made was amazing as well. Speaking of young QBs, Kyle Orton has been playing well out in Chicago.
Kyle (OH)
Keith, I know draft picks are treated like gold, but why wouldn't a team like the Giants (for example), trade a 2nd and 5th rounder for Tony Gonzalez? In '08, the Giants picked Terrell Thomas and Jonathan Goff with those picks...I think I'd rather have a HOF TE for the stretch run who still has something left in the tank...
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
That's a very good question. But when using trades as comparison, Shockey went for a 2 and a 5, but he's four years younger. You and I both know that's a lot to give up for that. But I would have done it in a heatbeat if I were KC. This team needs picks.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
The Matt Millen Award this week? I nominate Jon Kitna
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
We'll talk about that at the halfway point.
Benjamin Plattsburgh
I love matt ryan but he does have a solid LT, true #1 WR and an effective running game.... but really that is the best way to develop a young QB.... the others who dont develop the cast of the O around a young qb end up with qb busts
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
There is a whole lot of different factors that go into it. A lot of these guys aren't mature enough to play early in their careers. The one thing that makes Matt Ryan special is the pro system he played in in college.
Bob (Oakland, CA)
Do you think Oakland has a chance to rebound under Cable or was last Sunday the norm going forward this season?
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
I don't like anything about the Raiders right now. Sorry, I just don't. But the one bright blessing that I will say is that I expect their defense to play very well in the Blackhole on Sunday after the last game. I'd be shocked if they don't.
Ryan (San Diego)
Broncos or Chargers for the division? Who ya got?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
San Diego. I just have no faith whatsoever in the Denver Broncos defense. If the Broncos want to get an advantage with the Patriots, this is the week to do it against Matt Cassell.
Matt K (the Burg, PA)
Matt Millen Award lets make Pacman Jones a back to back winner.
Bill (Pomona California)
Hi K-squared, a Jets question for you. Does Favre have another brilliant day against the Raiders? Thanks!
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
Great question. I really like the way this offense is coming together. But I don't know if it will be a great day because this Raiders defense was embarrassed last week. But we all know what he did the last time he played in this stadium.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What is your upset special this week? You got the Cards right last week...
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
There are too many crappy games to pick one. But I'll go with the Broncos over the Patriots.
Eric (Chicago)
Matt Millen Award goes to Jerry Jones for trading to get Pacman Jones!
Xander (Philly)
Will the Bills win the AFC East?
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
I hope so, because I'm tired of seeing the Patriots dominate it every year. But in reality, they have a great shot. No disrespect to the Patriots either.
John (Watertown, NY)
This is for Neal Joliet, IL...if you look at it realistically, Russell is basically a rookie with Ryan and Flacco. He only played in 3 or 4 games last year.
Michael (TRIE, NJ)
Giant, Redskins, Eagles, Cowboys. Who will win the NFC East? How many will make the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
Three teams make the playoffs and I'm going with the Giants right now to win it. What a great division.
Pete (dc)
Is there really a "shutdown" corner in the league. When Champ was here he got smoked all the time by Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer. Springs (when healthy which is rare) has played much better for us than Champ did. As for Newman in Dallas, he definitely isn't a shutdown guy. I put Samuels, Springs, Henry, Brown, and may be Shepard ahead of him. That is just in his own division.
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
You make a valid point. I don't have time to argue the point, because I don't agree with some of those. But the guy to check out is the guy in Oakland - Asomugha.
Ted (Atlanta, GA)
How do you think the Falcons will fair this season with a tough schedule ahead of them?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
I didn't think this team would win three games. If they can get to 7-9, it's been an amazing season. This team knows how to win at home and it's not going to be easy for teams to go in there and win.
Michael (TRIE, NJ)
How long do you think Pacman will get suspended?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
Hopefully forever.
Joe (Huntsville,AL)
What is your opinion of Matt Schaub? Have we seen the best he can be?
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
I wasn't very strong on him early in the year, but he finally showed me something that I expected him to do in the game against Miami.
Mike (Toledo)
Do you think the Browns have a chance this Sunday? I was really impressed with their D-line and especially their o-line against a very good Giants D-line. That should be your upset special this week.
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
If they play like they did offensively on Monday, they have a chance. Eric Wright is turning into one good CB.
Chad (Cascade,MD)
Can the ravens turn it around?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Yes, because they're one of the best teams in the league defensively. However this offense is going to struggle week in week out. I think Flacco is going to be a good player in this league, but other than Derek Mason, I don't see any playmakers on the perimeter.
JimmyZ (PHX, AZ)
Does this void Jon Kitna's annual 10 win guarantee? The lions might not quite get there without him!
Ryan (Denver)
Any word on the Addai injury?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
2-4 weeks. The Colts added two new RBs this week.
Anthony (NYC)
Hey Kidder looking at what Dallas has done by adding Williams got me wondering, is there currently a starting NFL CB tandem over 6' ft tall? Because a healthy Dallas team means alot of man coverage.
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
Looking at this Dallas team on paper right now, there will not be a lot of defensive coordinators getting sleep the week they play them. Now, having it translate to on the field is a different story.
Kyle (OH)
Speaking of NFL trades, why were teams in the 70s and 80s so careless with draft picks? For examples, the Rams in '82 traded a 1st and 2nd round pick for a beat-up 31-year old Bert Jones!
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
MONEY. And, teams had a lot more picks.
Jeff Toms River NJ
Lawyer Milloy compared Matt Ryan to Tom Brady, Sports Illustrated compared him to Manning. What's your take on the Kid. Lucky? or are we watching the next great one grow before our very eyes.
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
That's a huge complement by a very good player in Milloy. But Brady is the best player in the NFL. If I recall, Brady didn't have near the talent Ryan has around him in his first years in New England. So let's not put him in the Hall of Fame yet. But I love his upside.
Dan (San Jose)
Here is the worst game of the weekend - the G-Men are going to demolish the 49ers. 25 points at least. Someone's gonna lose their job next week.
Mike Nolan (San Fransisco)
Am i going to get fired anytime soon?
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Yes and I did not stay at a Holidy Inn Select last night.
Michael (TRIE, NJ)
Who did the Colts pick up To back up for Addai's injury???
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Chad Simpson from their practice squad and they signed Clifton Dawson.
Dan (San Jose)
Here is the worst game of the weekend - the G-Men are going to demolish the 49ers. 25 points at least. Someone's gonna lose their job next week.
Michael (TRIE, NJ)
Think the Rams have any chance against Brad Johnson and his new recievers??
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
No. I actually think Brad Johnson will make this offense pretty good this weekend. I think he will steer this ship pretty well through the rough waters right now. He's a proven, experienced starter who has won consistently in this league.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What's up with Green Bay's front seven this year?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
Injuries have taken a toll on their interior and they're doing a lot of different things on their packages from a defensive personnel standpoint. The interesting point is that AJ Hawk has not been involved in all of those packages.
Pete (dc)
To answer Anthony's question, Rogers and Springs are both over 6 feet tall. But that doesn't mean I like their chances against Roy and TO unless Johnson is throwing the ball.
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Where are everyone's nominees for the Matt Millen Award?
sam (ny)
Is Frank Gore a top 5 RB?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
He's a top 8 in my opinion.
Steve Dallas TX
Kidder. How long till T.O. implodes now that the boys picked up Williams
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
He's kind of hung in there so far because he has yet to have a 100 yard game this season. But in fairness to him, any time he explodes the cameras catch him, but they never show him picking someone up. But, stay tuned. Keep your popcorn ready.
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
The Matt Millen Award, in honor of Pacman Jones, goes to the Dallas Cowboys organization, regardless of the Roy Williams trade.
Ryan (Denver)
Matt Millen award goes to Jerry Jones for signing Pacman and overpaying for RW
Benjamin Plattsburgh
Carl Peterson for Matt Millen award.... he bungled T-Gonzo situation and thought croyle and huard were good qbs.....
Rick (NY)
Jason Whitlock says Larry Fitzgerals is the best WR in the league, and will redefine the position. What say you?
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
He's young and he's very special. I'm not going to argue that point. It's just a shame that he plays in Arizona where we don't get to see him all the time.
Mike (Toledo)
Double K, can you give us Browns' fans any insight on whats up with Winslow? Is it something mental maybe? Also, have you heard anything about Sean Jones, I really want to see him and Pool together in that Backfield.
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Winslow is out of the hospital and it doesn't look like he will play this week. Though, we all know how teams like to massage the injury report.
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
I don't expect him to play this week, based on the information I've heard.
Benjamin Plattsburgh
the matt millen award goes to brad childress for being the worst in game HC in the league.... ill punt it down in the 4th with no timeouts so the other team can take a knee and run out the clock..... brilliant!
Jerry Jones (Dallas)
On behalf of the Dallas Cowboys and the National Football League, I accept the Millen Award. It just shows the tremendous effort and energy of our fine organization, it's players and fans. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!
dan (va)
whats ur opinion on the redskins' D? and the two receivers they drafted in devin thomas and malcolm kelly, what were the scouting reports on them coming in the draft? thanks
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
The defense has played well. They have helped themselves with the addition of Jason Taylor and their backend has played well. They dominated the Rams last week, but they committed three turnovers. As for the WRs, no WRs were highly rated. Those guys had second or third round grades.
Jamar (San Diego, CA)
Is Roy Williams going to play this week? If yes, how much do you think?
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
Which Roy Williams?
JC (Dallas)
Why isn't Ted Ginn returning kicks in Miami?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Good question. It might be that they're using him more in the offense and they want to protect him. Davone Bess is returning kicks and punts and they've used Ginn on some punts. They're probably just trying to protect him.
Donald (Williamsville.Mo)
Do you think the Steelers have a good shot at winning it all this year?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
Anything's possible, because right now everything is completely up for grabs with the injury to Tom Brady. But I have too many concerns about the OL right now. But I love their defense and if Roethlisberger can stay healthy, he's going to have a big year.
Will J (Portland, OR)
The only Roy Williams anyone cares about, fantasy wise anyway.
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
If he's active, they'll obviously have some packages that he'll play in. But from a fantasy perspective, I'd probably sit him this week, though he is playing the Rams.
Dave (PGH)
Keith, with Brady out, is Ben the NFL's best QB?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
I wouldn't put Big Ben in front of Peyton Manning, Drew Brees or Eli Manning. But that's me. Is he a top 5 QB? Yes.
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder how come the Eagles weren't more involved in the Williams sweepstakes? I think Philly has 2-1st rd picks in next years draft, Williams would've filled a major need for them.
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
They could have been, we don't know. But obviously, it wasn't anywhere near what Dallas was offering. But remember, the Eagles have used their draft board to move down to accumulate a lot of picks. They value those picks like gold. The only trade I heard them rumored in was with Gonzalez in KC. But I think that was more smoke than fire.
jerry (orlando)
why are you a steeler hater?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
Sorry, it must be from my days working for the Browns. But I'm not a Steeler hater. I love the job that Mike Tomlin has done and Big Ben is a good franchise QB. The biggest concern I have is the OL.
Steve (Issaquah, Wa)
Keith, I have heard rumors Matt Hasselbecks back is worse than originally thought and he could be out the whole year...have you heard anything? thanks.
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
Unfortunately, he's injured right now and without him, the Seahawks aren't very good without him. This has been a tough year for Seattle, because I expected much more out of them.
Neal Joliet, IL
For John in Watertown: Russell still had a full year to get acclimated to what being on an NFL team(technically) is like. He had more game experience and the point is that he's actually far worse than Ryan who wasn't even a Falcon until this past May. You can't complete 50 percent of your passes and have much hope to improve that figure enough to become something. PLus, look at how JeMarcus Russell does not run the football. That was one of his selling points out of LSU
Brittany (Indiana)
I'm not trying to split hairs here, but can you explain why you think Eli is a better qb than Ben?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
I don't have time to explain this. There is so much that goes into this. I'd take both of these players to lead my team. However, I'm just a bigger fan of Eli's than Ben right now.
Robert (NY, NY)
Hey Keith...big fan always a must read....so any chance Gholston shows something this year? Supposed to be a great athlete, but he looks stiff.
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
Robert, I don't see it happening. He looks so tentative and so out of place right now on defense. However, he has been a core special teams player. I agreed with Todd McShay last year and thought that he was rated way too high in where he should have gone.
Pac Man Winehouse
They try to make me go to rehab, but I say NO NO NO!!!
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Eli is just ballin'... nuff said....
Ryan (Denver)
I'm not trying to split hairs here but why does everyone think Ben is so great?
Tyler Reisch (Fargo, ND)
Do you agree with what the vikings fans cheered on sunday, "Fire Childress", and what do you think about the qb situation in minnesota, do you think they should draft a qb since there will be a couple of big name qb's in the draft?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
I don't think Brad Childress has done a very good job at all with this team. Of all the new coaches hired that year, he acquired the best team. They're too talented to be 3-3 right now. The QB situation is not that good for the future.
Jack (Cincinnati)
The Bengals have to try and trade Chad Ocho Cinco this offseason, right? Dan Snider has to keep up with Jerry Jones.
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
I don't think the Bengals are trying. The Redskins inquired about him and the Bengals didn't do anything, which was a big mistake.
Ken (San Diego, CA)
Hey Keith, what does Fitzgerald playing in AZ have anything to do with you seeing him play? I'm assuming you can watch game film of any player in the league.
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about people nationally. People don't see him enough. I don't think they realize how talented he is.
Dan (Minneapolis)
bears or vikes this week? seems like mn plays well when the competion is good...
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
I like the Bears. I really like the way Kyle Orton is playing in Chicago. The Bears are banged up on the backend and that's a concern. But it's the running game they have to stop against Minnesota.
Benjamin Plattsburgh
gholston is too big for his body type.... hes a body builder not a football player
JP (nyc)
Best QB on the Steelers ins Randle-El
Jason (Indiana)
Who is you pick to win the NFC North? Do you like the Bears chances?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
Can I put them in a hat and draw one? This is a wide open race that could go down to the last week of the season. Right now, if I had to pick a team that I liked, it would be the Packers.
Shawn TN
Keith, Romo has better stats than the Mannign brother and the rest of those qb's you named.. So where do you put him?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
He's right in that 6-8 range to me.
Ben (Atlanta)
Kidder......who will oppose the Falcons in the Super Bowl? :-) Seriously, is there any reason the Falcons can't make a playoff push?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
I love your passion and your confidence in your team.
mike (az)
KK that was a terrible way to phrase the Fitz comment. It was just another unnecessary jab from you towards your former organization. So sorry that EVERY good player doesnt play in dallas, nyc or any of the other major nfl cities.
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
What are you talking about? Keep it up mike and you'll get the next Matt Millen Award.
BO (Philly)
What is your superbowl prediction after 6 weeks into the season?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
Not ready to decide on it right now. My preseason was Dallas over San Diego, but, much like America, I have the right to change my mind.
Aaron (orlando)
hey keith, how about the jaguars chances this year. They weathered plenty of injuries and a very difficult early schedule to be 3-3. Do you think they are set up to maybe win 10-11 games and be back in the playoffs as a possible contender come years end?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
This team's bye could not have come at a better time. I think this team is going to do some damage over the rest of the season. The AFC South is going to be another division that's going to be awesome to watch.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, what are you thoughts on all the fines that the NFL has been handing out to Hines Ward?
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
I disagree with a lot of them. It's obvious to me that the commish is working hard to clean things up on and off the field. But I have to be careful, because I might get fined by him for talking about it.
Ryan (Denver)
mike (az), calm down, the Cardinals aren't televised nationally, don't yell at Kieth for laying out the facts
Jason (Indiana)
Geez Mike in AZ RELAX
Donald (Williamsville.Mo)
Why dont the Patriots make a call to Daunte Culpepper?
Mike (az)
you said it was a shame he played in az so more people couldn't watch his talent. Why phrase it that way? Why not say its a shame espn and the other various outlets who broadcast the nfl and show nfl highlights do not do a good enough job showing az highlights specifically Larry Fitz ones. It was very poorly phrased.
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
It wasn't a slam at the organization. Mike, quit being so sensitive.
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
And oh, by the way, I'm a huge Cardinals fan, just so you know.
Ed (Boston)
"poorly phrased"? Is this guy serious?
Greg (Champaign, IL)
You hear of a "chill pill" mike in az?
Joe, Dallas TX
Hey Kid, alls been quiet with Westbrook. Do you foresee Westy coming back and performing to his usual standards?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Remember they have the bye this week. I expect him back. He better be back - he's on my fantasy team and I need him in the worst way.
Matt K (The Burg)
To Ryan in denver that thin air must be getting to your head its called a Super Bowl ring and one heck of a winning percentage.
Mike (San Diego)
Kidder, have you seen JG's fantasy team lately? Flat out stinky....13 points last week.
Keith Kidd (2:01 PM)
The league I'm in with JG, he's cleaning up.
Sean (Philly)
I hate it when people call him Westy...
Ryan (Denver)
do you think the colts two new RBs are gonna get any time or will it just be the Rhodes show this week?
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
I think they'll get some time, because Rhodes will need some time to catch himself. But he'll play a whole lot.
Ryan (San Diego)
Kidder you should stick with San Diego for sure. AFC is as open as ever and they will not have those pesky Pats in their way this year
Jeff (Big D)
Oh common Greg (champaign), im indifferent to this cardinals stuff but chill pill?
brody (indy)
did the colts put any fear into the rest of the AFC by smashing the Ravens?
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
Absolutely, because Peyton Manning is back. This whole team's season changed in the last four minutes against Houston.
k (philly)
B WEST is accepatble though
Keren (Maui)
Mike (AZ) - The people that need to know about Fitz do, so stop whining.
Kevin (St Petersburg, Fl)
With my pewter-colored glasses, I cant help but believe the Bucs chances improve as each week passes. With injuries to the other contenders, and Tampa Bay's play so far, is it a stretch to be confident the Bucs can not only make the playoffs, but win the South, and maybe even push to the first HOME Super Bowl game in history?
Keith Kidd (2:04 PM)
Wishful thinking, but this division is going to be a great race to watch. The Bucs defense was suffocating last week.
Sean (Philly)
B Dub even...
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Why all the whining today? jeez....
Anthony (NYC)
Hey Mike(Az) if the Cards win a couple of major games they can earn more national recognition, that should happen this year in the NFC Least.....oh my bad, West
Keith Kidd (2:06 PM)
You're more than welcome to check out my Monday Night preview on PodCenter. Next week I want some feedback! Have a good weekend, travel safe.
