Chat with Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch
Welcome to The Show! On Wednesday, we'll have one of the founding members of Beastie Boys, Adam "MCA" Yauch, stopping by to chat about his new movie "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot" as well as anything else that's on your mind!
Yauch produced and directed the documentary that follows eight of the top 24 high school basketball stars that played in the first ever "Elite 24" all-star game at Harlem's Rucker Park on September 1, 2006.
Jerryd Bayless, Michael Beasley, Tyreke Evans, Donte Greene, Brandon Jennings, Kevin Love, Lance Stephenson and Kyle Singler are shown as they prepare not only to showcase their skills at the most legendary playground in the world, but also to be on the fast track to the NBA and in the spotlight of a multi-million dollar game. The double-disc DVD will be released on October 21.
In addition to the movie, Yauch and his band are participating in the "Rock the Vote" tour. Starting Oct. 27, the Beastie Boys make six tour stops in seven days, starting in Charlotte, N.C. and ending in Milwaukee, WI.
Send in your questions now and join Yauch at 5:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday!

Buzzmaster (5:35 PM)
Hey guys, sorry for the delay. It should only be a few more minutes.
Adam Yauch (5:41 PM)
Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by.
Ari, Laredo, TX.
When you were working on "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot" who of all the players really stood out???
Adam Yauch (5:43 PM)
All the players were interesting in different ways. Beasley stood out as a trash talker, Jerryd stood out in his intesity, And Brandon stood out as having a unique passing game.
Mike Antoni
How did you arrive at the title gunnin for that number 1 spot? Does that mean the no. 1 draft pick?
Adam Yauch (5:45 PM)
Not necessarily the draft, although it could refer to that. It is more of a general term, a reference to their competitiveness; it implies the competitiveness of the world in which they live.
Broad Street Brian (Philly)
Free Tibet!! BIG FAN of the Beasties Boys. Did you find during the making of the documentary that these high school kids are already like pro players? Crazy schedules, mingling with other players, runners, agents, etc
Adam Yauch (5:48 PM)
Yeah I think in some ways their lives are like pro players, and at times when you interview them they speak like pros. They are cautious about what they say and very aware of the ramifications of what they say in the media. But on another level they are still kids, and when you see them joking around that youth is still really there. And I do not think they are really that jaded yet. Their trajectory is going to this much larger thing, but in many ways they are not really caught up in the crap yet and they are still having fun playing ball. So sometimes when you see them you see them as adults and other times they look like kids.
Kevin (Chattanooga, TN)
"I got heart like John Starks" Who, if anyone, has heart on this current Knicks roster?
Adam Yauch (5:49 PM)
I am going to hold off on this one until the season gets going.
Cameron
Was this the first time you produced and directed a documentary? Even if it is not, what was the experience like?
Adam Yauch (5:52 PM)
I was an executive producer on a documetary called "Free Tibet" and worked on the Bestie Boys film "Awesome I F****** Shot that". It was very interesting to work on this film since I was not in it; it was very refreshing because you can focus on the film making and not jump back and forth in front of the camera.
Steiny (NYC)
Do you still keep in touch with the players from your film?
Adam Yauch (5:53 PM)
Somewhat. Once in a while they text me. I am interested in going to some of the games during the season and watch some of the games and say what's up to them.
Johnny Ryall (New York)
When you were working on the film how many of the players were aware of your music career?
Adam Yauch (5:55 PM)
A few of them. Sometimes their coaches did. In more than one case, a coach would recognize me and say to their player: "Do you know who this is?"
Andy from Denver
Adam, Please tell us what we can expect to hear at the upcoming shows - old school rap, hard core, and/or instrumentals? See you in D-Town!
Adam Yauch (5:57 PM)
For this next run of shows we will be dsoing it will be all hip hop. So we will be playing "Intergalatic" "So What You Want" songs of this ilk.
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)
What's been more fun: the film or your music career?
Adam Yauch (5:58 PM)
I enjoy going back and forth. It is nice to focus on film for a bit and then go work on music, and then go back. It is interesting to go back and forth. And to combine them. It has been interesting to work on the music for the film.
ryan,boston
How do you feel about being in Guitar Hero?
Adam Yauch (5:59 PM)
I do not mind. I think it's funny. I just hope the people are playing along with the bass line and not just focusing on the guitar.
Axl
Are you going to buy Chinese Democracy when it comes out?
Adam Yauch (5:59 PM)
Is that ever really going to come out?
Zach
Do you think young people are politically apathetic? Are you afraid for all the talk of a large young voter turnout many will not bother to vote on Nov. 4th?
Adam Yauch (6:01 PM)
Well that is the purpose of this Get Out And Vote Tour that we are about to do. But yes, historically, young people, in their 20s and 30s, have not really brothered to vote. Our hope is to encourage people to get out and vote. And if you are interested about it go to beastieboys.com and there is information about the tour dates we are about to do across swing states.
Jerry (New Jersey)
How cool was it to work with Spike Jonze on Sabatoge video? Is it true you guys did not have any permits to film the video?
Adam Yauch (6:04 PM)
Yeah it was a lot of fun. Spike is a great friend. Spike was also in disguise during the shooting of the video and shot most of it himself. It was funny. I do not remember if we had the permits, but probably a lot of it was shot without permits. A lot of times the four of us would just jump in a car, leave the set and shoot wherever we went.
Nathaniel Hornblower 's cousin Ben (San Fran)
Did you play any sports when you were a kid? Who's the better baller - you, Mike D or Ad Rock?
Adam Yauch (6:05 PM)
Not too much. Many of the sports I did growing up were skateboarding, swimming, skiing. I was not into competitive sports, and I started playing basketball when I was 20. In terms of who is better, Adam and I are equally good, and Mike does not play anymore. But I wish I started playing at a younger age.
Paul Revere (Out west)
You've worked a eclectic group of athletes into your lyrics over the years. Phil Rizzuto, Rod Carew, Sadaharu Oh, Anthony Mason, John Starks, among others. Were you a big sports fan growing up? And is there anyone you've always wanted to fit into a lyric that you haven't been able to yet?
Adam Yauch (6:07 PM)
I was not a big sports fan growing up. In terms of wanting to fit anyone in, not that I can think of, no.
Adam Yauch (6:09 PM)
Thanks a lot for tuning in. I hope you guys enjoy the DVD and I will see you out there on the road if you come to any of the dates on the Get Out And Vote Tour.
