Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:02 PM)
We've got Kidder!
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
It's great to be here. There have been a lot of interesting things that have taken place this week. Let's get rolling with your NFL questions!
John (Fort Myers, FL)
Who ya got in this weekend's Giants-Steelers game?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
I like the Giants in this game. I think it will be a very close game because I have concerns about the Steelers' offensive line in handling the Giants pressure packages. But I do think it will be a tight game that goes down to the wire.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Can't wait for today's insight... Hopefully people are not as hostile as last week!
Paul (Dallas)
Can the Cowboys best the Bucs at home?
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
I don't like the Cowboys at all right now. I don't like the chemistry. This team is not playing with a lot of confidence. Wade Phillips is taking over the defense, but hasn't he been wearing the headsets on Sunday? Has he not been involved? Brad Johnson is a stationary target and I'm concerned about the Cowboys ability to make plays on offense.
John (Miami)
True or False Joey Porter leads the league in Sacks at the end of the season.
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
I would say false. There are too many great pass rushers in the league right now. Not to take away from the season he's having, because he's having a phenomenal year.
Chris (Cali)
What's wrong with the Cowboys O-line? With all the drama going on in Dallas, the team's troubles blocking is going under the radar! They haven't been able to run the ball, last weeks stats are misleading because the Rams had a big lead. And the pass protection has been horrible against only average pass rushs. What do you think?
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
They simply haven't played very well. Outside of Leonard Davis, they haven't played well. How many times the last few weeks has Adams been completely run over? Outside of the one drive against the Rams, this offense has been out of sync. The best remedy for that would be for them to pound, pound, pound the ball with Marion Barber. But it will be hard against that Tampa Bay defense.
Aaron (Memphis, TN)
How long until we see Chad Henne replace Chad Pennington in South Florida? Pennington has done a great job this season but we aren't going anywhere again this year, so at what point do we get to see what Henne is made of?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
Aaron, believe it or not, the Dolphins are still in the thick of things in the AFC East. Until they are not a factor in the race, I would not expect to see him until later in the season.
Nancy (Indy)
Will the Colts still make the playoffs? Is all the blame gonna be put on Peyton if they don't?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
Nancy, that's a great question. To me their whole season is on the line when they play the Titans on Monday night. This team has a lot of experienced players that realize that, which should make this a great game. I'm not going to count them out of the playoffs just yet.
Brian (Denver)
Any chance Sean Payton could be on the hot seat?
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
I don't see it. He just recently signed a new contract extension. He's not on the hot seat, nor should he be. This is a huge game in London in a game they should win.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Do you think a team might finish 8-8 and win the NFC North?
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
No. I could see 9-7, yes, but not 8-8.
Paulie (Slippery Rock, PA)
When do the Browns make a change at QB? They traded up to get Brady Quinn so why not give him a shot? Other than the Giants game, DA hasn't looked good all season.
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
It's getting close. Keep in mind, once they make that change, there's no turning back. Even though there's a lot of frustration with Derek Anderson and the way they've played, this team still has a shot at the AFC North. He still gives them the best shot to win, as crazy as that sounds. But if they lose in Jacksonville, it will be hard to overcome that.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, I really think in a close game Big Ben makes the big play and the steelers win. How much of a facter will Fast Wille Parker coming back play?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
If he's fully healthy, I think he'll make a huge factor in this game because of his explosive speed and ability to strike from anywhere on the field. What a great matchup to watch these two great young QBs. Also, the Giants offense against this Steelers defense. I can't wait for this game.
Mike (Cincy)
Is Marvin Lewis out at the end of the year?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
Possibly. However, I don't see the Brown family firing a coach with time left on his contract. Let's face it, the Bengals have a chance to possibly win three games. Plus, he'll get the Get Out of Jail For Free card because Carson Palmer's been injured this year.
Max (UMD)
Hey your chats are much more interesting than the lecture i'm in right now. What do you think the Giants do with Kiwanuka next year when Osi comes back?
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
Thanks. You don't get rid of great football players. He has so much versatility on the field. He'll be out there in some capacity. That's a very good problem for the Giants to have.
Travis James (Milwaukee)
Do you see Favre playing another year in New York after this year?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
I do see him playing again next year. I think he's still playing at a very high level. This offensive line has underachieved. For as much money as they spent, they haven't played as well as you would think. They're playing against a defense this week that can't even dial up a stop right now.
Luis (SB, CA)
This morning on First Take they were talking about the Lions going 0-16. Based on their schedule, which might be the most brutal in the league, do you think it's possible?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
This organization is in terrible shape. The y've been down by 21 points in the first quarter in five the first six games!
Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)
Keith, Give me your thoughts on the play of the Bills young QB Trent Edwards right now?
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
I like Trent Edwards. I think he's done a great job within the structure of their offense. He's extremely accurate. He's smart. He's a major reason this team is 5-1 and in first place in the AFC East. I am really loooking forward to when this team plays the Patriots.
Tony (St. Louis)
Any chance the rams can come back and make the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
Yes, because they'll finish the most difficult part of their schedule when they play the Patriots this week. After that, they have some very winnable games. And they play in a weak division. They have a heckuva shot.
Graham (Owensboro)
Which team from the NFC East do you see not making the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
I would say right now, I hate to say it, the Cowboys. But I have a right to change it down the road. I picked this team to make the Super Bowl, but this team is a runaway train right now.
Brian(Dallas)
I'm on a Fantasy skid and could use your input. Favre or Rivers? I picked up C.Benson and he is projected better than J.Lewis. Which is a better start?
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
Easily, Favre at home against the Chiefs. Benson ran well last week against Pittsburgh and they're playing Houston. But I'd probably take Lewis against the Jaguars.
Ryan (Denver)
AFC west is a mess, who do you think will come out of this division, and will they have anything better than 9-7??
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
I still think San Diego will win the Division. I can't even start to explain how bad the Broncos defense is right now.
Jill (Kansas)
Do you think Herm Edwards is gone after this year?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
Possibly. It will be an interesting call to which direction this organization makes in regards to both the GM and coach.
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
This is a very, very attractive team. But obviously, the biggest missing ingredient is the QB position. There are some talented players on this team but there is no future QB on the roster right now.
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Get your Matt Millen Award nominees in. We'll be picking the winner in a little bit.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
K-squared: What team currently playing sub-.500 ball can you see turning it around and making the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Jacksonville. They're a team to keep an eye on. Also, I can not and will not give up on the Indianapolis Colts.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, I am so tired of the Cowboys fans crying over injuries, my thought is they are over rated and the coaching staff is not that good, any thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
This is an extremely talented team that has some great players. But, to me, it's more about a collection of talent than it is about a team. There are too many personalities. The owner consistently overrides the head coach and takes away his authority. It's a clear connection of a group of talented players with no identity or direction. You just hope they can turn it around.
Jeff Toms River NJ
Soldja boy Kellen Winslow for the Millen award
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Kellen Winslow for the Matt Millen Award!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
With Nolan out and JTO struggling, do you think the 49ers might run some form of the Wildcat making more use of Michael Robinson?
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
Great question. Every team has a form of the Wildcat that they've worked on. Whether or not they use it is another thing. If I were Mike Singletary, I would emphasize to Mike Martz that we need to get Frank Gore more involved in the offense.
Majeed
LJ for Millen award!
Adam (Jersey)
Let's not forget about Larry Johnson for the Matt Millen award!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I'm nominating bounty-hunter Lee Suggs for the Millen Award this week.
Mike (San Diego)
Kidder...I have to nominate you for the Millen award. KC a very attractive team? How the heck is that even possible? They're not one QB away from a winning season...they're about 18 new starters away from being a .500 team.
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Mike, what I meant was is that it's totally attractive from a fan base and an organizational standpoing. There are some passionate fans. And I disagree with you on this team. They have some good young players, they just got young way too quick. They should have kept some of their veteran players. It's going to take some time and they need to find a QB.
JD (Boston)
Is Jerry Jones becoming Al Davis before our very eyes as it was suggested on local radio here in Boston?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
I wouldn't go that far, but what I would say is that he's a guy that a lot of people would love to work for, becuase he's very passionate. He'll go and get any player if he thinks he'll make them better. But there's a lot more in this business than just collection a lot of great players. You have to become a team.
Steve Atlanta
Your thoughts on the Falcons Eagles game this weekend. Can the Falcons pull out another miricle finish?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Steve, this is going to be a very tough game for Matt Ryan. The Falcons will see so many different looks in the way that Jim Johnson will attack this young QB. I don't see this being a close game on Sunday. If they can't run it, they could have a very difficult time.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Green Bay media and Favre have to be in contention for the Matt Millen Award
Russ (New York)
Matt Millen award goes to the Minnesota Vikings Special Teams
Adam (Jersey)
Actually, what am I saying? I don't care if it wasn't technically illegal, I'd like to propose Brett Favre for a Matt Millen award nomination.
Jonathan, N.O.
Do you think the Saints will turn it around, and if so how?
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
Right now, I don't see them turning the season around. They're on the road until Thanksgiving weekend.
Mike (San Diego)
Good deal Kidder...I officially un-nominate you for the award...thanks for the clarification!
John (Fort Myers, FL)
It's been a crazy season so far this year. What AFC division winner from last year to do think has the best shot of missing the playoffs (Pgh, NE, Ind, SD)?
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
John, I'm not dancing around this question. This season is so out of whack that it's too hard to predict that right now. If Indianapolis loses to Tennessee on Monday night, it'll be Indy. They're all weak divisions, except for the AFC South.
Eric (Chicago)
San Francisco front office for the Matt Millen Award, the way they handled Nolan was classless!
Ryan (cleveland)
Throw me a bone Kidder...do you really think the Browns would get rid of WInslow after the season based on this infection situation?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Without a doubt, you'll see Kellen Winslow in a new uniform next year.
Dave (Denver)
The entire Broncos team for the Matt Millen award. Talk about not showing up for a game.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Kidder, I just heard the Lions game will be blacked out locally, they have 5000 tickets left. Will the empty seats make old man Ford make changes?
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
Matt, you want to say yes, but how many years was Matt Millen in Detroit? The one thing I've learned about Detroit is expect the unexpected.
Brian (Sanibel Island, FL)
Pick one QB to build your team around and it can't be Tom Brady.
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
That's easy, Peyton Manning. Next!
Rick (richmond VA)
The Cowboys simply are not as "talented" as people keep saying. T.O. got old, Flozel is done, Barber is not the beast people thought, the entire secondary even with a healthy Newman is not near as good as per person as the Redskins. T Romo is a fine but turnover prone QB, but to me Davis, Ware, Witten are the only really probowl level players on that team. oh wait McBriar is abeast punter too
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
I'm not going to argue that. This team is as talented as any in the NFL, from an offensive skill position standpoint. Defensively, they have an inability to make plays in space on the back end. This team isn't as athletic as you thought they would be.
Michael (Warsaw IN)
What are your thoughts on the game between the Bears and Bye? Do you think the Bears have a chance to pull off the victory?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Michael, I will say this about the Bears: I love Kyle Orton. He has played better than we all have anticipated. This team needs the bye as bad as anybody from a defensive standpoint to get these guys back on the field healthy.
Ted
Will Mike Shanahan ever be held accountable for the mess in Denver?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Unfortunately not. But the one thing he's got to quit doing is blaming the defensive coordinators - he's fired two in the last three years. It's obvious to me that this team is not very talented for the system they're playing in. You can't take 4-3 players and try to play them in a 3-4. This team was horrible Monday night. Horrible.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Matt Millen Award goes to Kellen "the staph infection" Winslow.
Renegade
I know it's college, but what about the tackling ref for Matt Millen award!
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
To me, without a doubt, its Larry Johnson in KC. With Kellen Winslow as a close runner-up.
Jon (Mad-town)
Talented teams often fail because there's a lack of leadership. Look at the Cowboys and Chargers. Those 2 teams might have better talent than anyone in the NFL but never maintain the discipline to utilize it.
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
I couldn't have said it better.
Adam (Jersey)
What do you think of Antonio Bryant getting the starting nod at split end? I don't think Galloway can play flanker in that offense, so he becomes a slot guy. Do you like the move?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
I think Antonio Bryant has been a great story in the NFL this season. Gruden rolled the dice on him and it's paid huge dividends. Galloway is getting toward the end of his career, based on his age.
Steve (Jacksonville, FL)
I have Hines Ward, Santana Moss, and Plaxico Burress on my fantasy team and only two starting spots. Who do I start?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
Well, you definitely have to start Moss against Detroit. And how can you not start Plax against his former team?
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Majeed, remember how you were nominated for the Millen award a few weeks ago? Statements like those are why...
James (Florida)
Hey what are your feelings on the whole Winslow suspension? I admit I am not a Winslow fan but I completely disagree with him being suspended.
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
I think both the player and organization dropped the ball on this one.
Graham (Tampa)
I'm dating a Bucs cheerleader. She insists we are better off without Cadillac. I think he will help our offense a lot. What part do you think he will play in our offense the rest of the season?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
You're a lucky guy. You're dating a Bucs cheerleader, why mess up a good thing?
Jon (Mad-town)
What do you think about the Bears' Corey Graham? Sports writers in Chicago seem to love him because he makes a lot of tackles, but typically with CBs a high number of tackles means a lot of passes are getting thrown and completed their way.
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
I like him. Obviously he's a young guy that's played pretty well in their sub packages. He's been forced to play early because of the injuries. But the only way you can get better at that position is you have to go play a difficult position.
Mike (San Diego)
Kidder...coaching question for you. When you see a Defensive minded coach (ala Fisher in Tenn) they tend to have success because the team is kind of built around some great D players. Marvin Lewis, on the other hand, his team is built around the Offense, which isn't his specialty (I'm thinking that because he's a D guy, the organization thinks you can give him Chicken Crap and expect him to make Chicken salad out of it). You see this success/failure around the league often, but nothing is really done about it. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
The job Jeff Fisher has done in Tennessee has been amazing. His defensive system has never changed. As for Lewis, he brought a system there to fix the defense, but he's consistently turned over defensive coordinators and put the blame on them and not him. They haven't been able to fix it, because they haven't drafted the right players to help fix it, especially against the run.
Ericht (Bermuda)
Wow...Portis is a beast this year. So happy he is on my FF team.
Greedo (Mos Eisley)
Just me or does Miami have a good chance at upsetting the Bills?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
I think it's you Greedo. I think it's going to be a close game and the weather can be a factor in this game. It will be up to Buffalo to substitute those players to really give them the rest they need. Miami will need to run the football to win this game. But I like the Bills in this game.
Chet (LA)
Keith, Which team showed their 'true colors' last week, the Packers or the Colts??
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
You know what, that's a good question. Lambeau Field is a very difficult place to play for any team. The Colts were extremely undisciplined with their penalties. And the Packers did a good job of taking away that vertical element of the Colts passing game. And Aaron Rodgers continues to play at a very high level.
Corey (Reading, Pa)
Eagles are 3-3...think they turn it around or falter?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
It's a critical stretch of games coming up for them. I'm not one to say a team doesn't have a chance when we're not to the mid point of the season.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What is your upset special this weekend?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Colts over the Titans on Monday Night.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Rays or Phillies?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Phillies.
Bengals & Lions fans
So you're saying we have a chance...
Solomon Cedar Falls Iowa
How long do you think it will take for the Chiefs to rebound and have a championship caliber team. Or even a playoff team.
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
They first have to address the QB position. That's going to be the whole key. Until then, it's going to be some time.
Hines Ward
I'm tired of opposing teams complaining about the way I play. I never block illegally but yet, other players say I'm dirty. Am I missing something here?
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
Hey Hines, ever since you've entered this league, I've loved watching you play. Keep it up.
Cliff (NYC)
When will people begin to realize what a terrible head coach Norv Turner is? Why does this guy seem to get a free pass in the media?
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
I thought he did a great job last year. This team is 3-3 and there is still a tremendous amount of the season to be played. Let's wait until later in the season.
Liam (Houston)
Who do you think is HC of the 49ers next year?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Based on what I've seen in the last few days, the organization would love for it to be Mike Singletary. Mike Singletary has a great shot of being the HC of the 49ers next year, unless this team just bottoms out and doesn't win a game.
Ryan (Council Bluffs)
What chance do you give the Raiders of winning the AFC west
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Not much. This team is too undisciplined and I don't see an offense that's going to score a lot of points. It could be really ugly for Russell on Sunday against that Ravens pressure defense.
Jon (Mad-town)
Tommie Harris finally got a sack last week, is this a sign that he's finally healthy, or a sign that Gus Frerotte is Gus Frerotte?
Keith Kidd (2:01 PM)
I think Tommie Harris got a wake up call when Lovie Smith suspended him for a game. This guy is too talented of a player to not have a big impact week in and week out. The Bears just need to get some players healthy in their secondary when they come back from the bye.
Big Jake (Baton Rouge)
Does Torry Holt fianlly score another TD this week?
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
If I'm Al Saunder in St. Louis, I try to find some way or another to get him matched up on O'Neal. This Rams team is talented, however, it's obvious that they did not want to play for Linehan.
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
Hey it's been fast and furious and a lot of fun. Make sure you check out my Monday Night preview show on the PodCenter. It's also on the ESPN.com NFL page on Sundays and Mondays. Give me some feedback. Good luck this week to your favorite NFL team.
