We'll be chatting during Game 3 of the World Series Saturday night! Stop on by starting at 8 p.m. ET!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:05 PM)
Good evening everyone! We're in a rain delay right now, but I'm here with you to keep you company until then! Sounds like a start time somewhere in the 9-9:30 p.m. ET range.
cody (g town)
i think that the phills are go0ing to0 win to0night
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:06 PM)
First prediction of the night!
mark (columbus, ohio)
i think the rays will win the world series, but i also think that people should start giving more crdit to the phillies. they have had a tremendous season, and they shouldnt be considered an underdog in their own ballpark.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:09 PM)
A 48-33 team at home in the regular season, and a perfect 4-0 so far at Citizens Bank in this postseason. I'll be shocked if they don't take this back to Tampa Bay, and might do it up 3-2!
Rob Denver
how bad is the rain
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:09 PM)
Rob, I'm not at the ballpark, but watching video of the game it looked like it was coming down heavy. Doesn't look close to being game ready there.
drew (Hanover, maryland)
because of the weather in game 3 do you think this will affect the rays because they play in the sun not in the cold
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:12 PM)
Drew, interesting point, but this is the World Series. Wouldn't you think both teams have demonstrated an ability to play hard no matter the venue or the weather? I'll grant you this: Rays were 40-41 on the road in the regular season, 3-2 postseason. They did play well in Boston though, both in September and in the ALCS, though. So I doubt the cold is a big problem. Also, isn't it in the high 50s in Philly right now? Not freezing, really.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:13 PM)
I've got 59 degrees in Philly as of this moment...
Tiffany (St Petersburg)
and if you've ever been at the stadium which I'm assuming you haven't, it's ice cold there all the time!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:14 PM)
I've been to Citizens Bank many a time. It's "cold" in April and September sometimes, but then I can wear a t-shirt in 50 degrees and not mind, so who am I to complain. Yeah, I'm that guy...
Tiffany (St Petersburg)
which is going to be really cold for the rays. usually 70 in the stadium!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:15 PM)
Rays fan telling it like it is? Tiffany, I'm not denying it being a factor, but do you really want to dismiss your team coming out to play?
Ocho Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I was just outside in my boxers putting the cover on my grill. I don't think there will be any cases of frostbite at the Bank tonight.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:15 PM)
Save a burger for me!
Zach ( Reading, PA)
I really do not like the Phillies chances this evening. Moyer has been shakey and Matt "Big Game" Garza has been unflappable. Any chance you think Moyer can pull out the win tonight?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:17 PM)
There doesn't seem to be a person out there giving Jamie Moyer a prayer of winning this game tonight. And you know what, considering how much I've followed, rooted for, rostered this guy in fantasy leagues in the past, that sounds like the perfect time for me to pounce. I'm not dismissing him. We'll know how sharp he is in the first inning for sure -- that will speak volumes -- but this guy has waited his whole career for this. I'm faithful he won't disappoint to the level he did in the NLCS.
DaveS (Hamilton, NJ)
Is there any chance the game will be rained out? If so, how do you think that would effect the Phillies' pitching rotation? Would hamels get 3 starts instead of 2?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:19 PM)
All I can say is that if they start this game, they better darned finish it. If it gets rained out, I don't think it'd make any difference on the Phils' rotation. After all, it'd be a game a day for five days, so the only way Cole Hamels is pitching three times is if he goes Sunday and then in Thursday's Game 7. What's interesting: The Phils can't go to him Sunday only in the event they're down 2-1 if they don't play tonight! So they'd have to make that choice tied 1-1. I'd do it, if I were them.
Kevin (South Jersey)
Why didn't the Phillies hold off on starting Brett Myers until this game, so he could bat? Starting Moyer on Friday?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:21 PM)
Could of things here, Kevin. One, for all this talk of Brett Myers being a great hitter, the dude batted sub-.100 in the regular season. He has a .302 OPS. Note that, I said OPS, not batting average, on-base percentage or slugging percentage. OPS! Also, I think the Phils think they have a better chance in Game 7 with Jamie Moyer than they do Brett Myers.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:22 PM)
Rain's letting up a bit...
Tommy (Pennsauken NJ)
Do you think the Phillies will come out swinging with the comments Garza made about not being afraid of the Phillies hitters?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:22 PM)
Haven't they been doing that? The real problem they're having is hitting with runners in scoring position. If they'd get a clutch hit or two every now and then they'd be up 2-0 right now.
Felipe (las vegas, nv)
If the Phillies win 2 of three in Philly, they will win the series.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:23 PM)
I don't agree with you Felipe, but we can agree to disagree. Rays' home-field advantage is huge.
Davies (Beverly Hills, CA)
What are the chances Moyer will be relieved in the 2nd or 3rd inning if he's giving up too many hits?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:23 PM)
Astronomically high. But again, we'll know which Moyer we're going to get very early in this game.
Steven (Syracuse, NY)
Is there any chance that the Braves get Peavy?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:24 PM)
They're considered the favorites right now. And for as much talk as there has been surrounding Jake Peavy, I do think he'll be dealt.
Ocho Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Here's my problem with having used Myers in Game 2 and now Moyer for Game 3. Myers pitches (and hits) alot better at home than on the road. Every is considering Moyer a sacrificial lamb anyway, why not have used him in Game 2? Because now, you have Moyer who is a nibbler throwing in windy conditions. He got shook in his last two starts because he felt he got squeezed. Is this really the ideal spot for him?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:28 PM)
Ocho, I think the best point that can be made in Brett Myers' favor of starting Game 3 is that his ERA was 3.01 at home, compared to 6.21 on the road, in the regular season. I don't deny that from that perspective, it makes sense. But then you'd have Myers pitching Game 7 on the road, so is any arrangement really ideal? By the way, still not entertaining a single thought about Brett Myers the hitter. Career home OPS: .312. In 2008 it was .260.
Jacob (Austin)
So whats the word on the rain delay? Any chance its gonna start soon?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:30 PM)
Initial reports were between 9 and 9:30. I'll let you know when I hear otherwise.
Jason (Philly)
Right now, there is no rain down at the ball park.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:32 PM)
You at the park, Jason? Not busting on you, just curious; last time I was there I was told they didn't have wireless.
Steve-o PhILADelPHia
Here is a prediction6 innings1 ER3 K0 BBGuess who?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:34 PM)
Well, the command numbers make it sound like a Jamie Moyer line, but I'd say Matt Garza has the better chance of going six innings with one run allowed.
Chuck pleasant valley, new york
that's good. It will be a long night for both teams tonight. Hopefully, nobody will get hurt on slick field or improper stretching.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:35 PM)
That's the thing that troubles me, Chuck. Sipping and sliding in that outfield would not be a good thing.
Tim R (Raleighwood, NC)
This just in ... Bud has moved the game to milwaukee.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:36 PM)
Jamie Moyer is throwing a no-hitter then!
Nicole (London)
Gamecast needs to load. Now
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:36 PM)
It does. Go to the Scoreboard page and click on the game, it's one of the tabs when you get onto the game page.
Matt (California)
So Tristan, do you enjoy this show? Till Death
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:38 PM)
I do not. Though my wife -- being incredibly patient not putting on something else on TiVo -- dislikes it even more. Never watched an episode before tonight though. I remember the previews, didn't they have a younger couple on this? Guess they changed that idea.
Jason (Philly)
The field drains nicely and the grass privides good traction.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:39 PM)
I was at a game there in July 2007 where there was a torrential downpour for an hour, and left field turned into a lake. So I don't know that I completely agree with you, Jason, but then that was some real rain on that day. Reminded me of a Florida downpour.
charlie(san idego)
heres is the problem for all phillis fans, the series are going to be over at their own home just watch....isn't that rigth tristan?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:40 PM)
That is not right. But I say that because Cole Hamels gets to pitch one of these games!
Aaron Rowand (San Francisco)
How favored are the Phils if they still have me in CF?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:42 PM)
I'm going to say no real change. What's Shane Victorino, chopped liver? Or, more appropriately, Jayson Werth is the one playing regularly who wasn't last year, and he had a great year. I like Rowand, but it's impossible to say his presence changes things.
Quint Walker (Ohio)
This game should be a good one
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:43 PM)
Sure, just make sure you put on a pot of coffee around 10 ET!
Bowser (PA)
There's no need to play this game under these conditions. It will detract from the ability of the palyers. This is not just another regular season game.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:44 PM)
Agreed, but the almighty dollar decides things these days. I do hope the right decision is made here, that we don't start this and then have further delays. That'd be a disaster in such an important game.
John, Philadelphia
How many rain delays would it take to get Cole to pitch two more games?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:45 PM)
Like I mentioned earlier, Hamels could pitch on three days' rest tomorrow, and then again on Thursday. But if you want to get rain delays in here to keep him on four days' rest, you'd need more than two of them. Lose tonight's game, pitch him Monday, rainout Tuesday as well, that'd do it. But that's asking a lot.
Brenden (Miami)
Cole can go on one days rest hes young haha
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:46 PM)
I'd throw anyone on one day's rest in Game 7! Well, for a brief portion of the game, I mean.
JB (Orlando)
Tristan, are you here all night or is Rob or someone else taking over once the game starts?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:47 PM)
I am here with you all night JB!
Sam (Florida)
if he went on one days rest, the rays would have a field day hitting against him. it would be like batting practice
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:48 PM)
If Randy Johnson went on one day's rest in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, the Yankees would have a field day hitting against ... oh, forget it.
Tim (St Pete Fl)
Any update on a start time? Not by the TV.....yet
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:49 PM)
No, but then the weather is still a mess there, and the tarp on the field last I checked.
Sam (Florida)
randy johnson didn't start both games
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:50 PM)
I never said I'd START a guy on one day's rest, if you check that previous answer. I said "brief portion of the game."
Mummsy (PA)
I'm a Phillies fan, and Moyer needs to retire. What's the deal?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:51 PM)
He won 16 games with a 3.71 ERA, both his best numbers since 2003 in Seattle. So I can't agree with you, Mummsy.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:51 PM)
Still pouring in Philly, so no news on a start time for this game.
Chris (Furman University)
What's going on at the stadium, are the fans at least getting to see the PSU/OSU game on the big screen?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:52 PM)
I'd hope so, Chris, and you know, the last game I attended in Philly that was delayed by rain, they did show the Flyers' playoff game. So I'm sure they have the fans in mind, not that it looked like it necessarily the last cut to the game I saw.
George (Ithaca, NY)
Did Hamels's numbers go down during the year when opponents starting seeing him more? I wonder if a third start in a short series wouldn't be so great for him. What others pitchers have dominated over 3 starts in a playoff series?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:54 PM)
Hamels' opponent batting average and OPS by times through the order this year: First time, .224 and .640. Second time, .232 and .654. Third time and beyond, .224 and .676. So doesn't seem like it's a problem.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:56 PM)
By the way, on the second part of that question, first guy who pops into mind as a dominating three-start World Series pitcher is Jack Morris from 1991. What a series he had!
chico (virginia)
any chance they play a doubleheader?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:57 PM)
No way.
Dave (Philly)
How about former Philly Curt Schilling, George? Dominated that 2001 series with 3 starts!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:58 PM)
True true. I tried to forget about that one best I could. He and Randy Johnson were flat-out unhittable.
Ryan (Scranton Pa)
If the Phils pull out a win tonight, Don't you think they become immediate favorites to win the series knowing they have hamels for 2 more games?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (8:59 PM)
Favorites? No, but then I bet the consensus would become a total toss-up on the winner. My stance has been and remains Rays in six. And that's no knock on the Phillies, I simply think the Rays are going to be tough to beat in those final two on their home field, and no doubt they're going back there.
Billy (Seattle, WA)
The were already a favorite after winning game 1. The winner of game one has won the last 5 world series, and 10 of the last 11
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:01 PM)
Great stat from ESPN Research's Mark Simon: In series that were tied 1-1, eight of the last nine teams to win Game 3 went on to win the series. It also has happened in 13 of the past 15 instances.
Mike Z (LA, CA)
Are there strong winds w/ this rain in Philly? Will it affect the long balls?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:03 PM)
Looks like there's wind from what I've seen, though all the weather sites say it's in the 8-10 mph range. Doesn't seem like significant wind, but it could be a factor.
Tom Tampa
What about Beckett????? Game 7 Yankee Stadium???
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:04 PM)
That was Game 6, Tom. Believe me, I remember it.
The Commish
Where are you watching the game? Stadium? Bar? Mom's basement?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:05 PM)
Couple hours up the road from the stadium, NYC area. And it's absolutely pouring here.
Steven (Syracuse, NY)
hey tristan why isnt there much talk about game 4 starters? if they actually pitch tomorrow night sonnanstine would be pitching on 15 days rest and blanton on 16 days rest. I havent anything at all about that. Which team is more concerned about that?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:06 PM)
Steven, I'm sure we'll hear a ton about Game 4 in the hours leading up to it. But most people don't really get all wrapped up in No. 4 starters, so that's probably the reason. I can say this: For all the negative press on Joe Blanton, I really don't like Andy Sonnanstine any better pitching in Philly. He's a strike thrower who at times in his career has had a penchant for surrendering the long ball.
AR (Wilmington, DE)
Tristan - Respect your opinion as always but all the other experts also gave our Phils no shot against the Dodgers and we made out just fine. Give us some props my man, esp. if the clutch hitting finally shows up. This is a team one big hit away from getting the bats hot again and really turning this thing around.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:08 PM)
I know, it sounds easy to say now, AR, but if you checked in for any of my LCS chats I picked the Phillies to win that series. In seven games, mind you, but I believed enough in this team. Problem is, I like the extra home game for these Rays in this series, and I have more faith in their mid-rotation guys than those of the Phils. But I continue to stress I expect a hard-fought World Series.
Paul (Philly)
I just get an eerie feeling that this game will be like game 4 in 1993. Blue Jays 15, Phils 14.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:09 PM)
Wouldn't shock me. My gut's been telling me a higher-scoring affair than you'd expect is in order. Total gut instinct.
Dani (Philadelphia, PA)
How long of a delay before they postpone the game? Do you think there's any chance they'll start if they're not sure they can finish?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:11 PM)
Wish I knew the answer to that, Dani. I'd have to be a bit surprised to see them drag this out much past 10 p.m. ET. Just wouldn't make any sense. As for whether they'd be sure they can finish, again, I don't make those calls, but I would be shocked if they weren't confident the weather is clear the rest of the night. Anything else would be a huge mistake.
Jeff (Boston )
Do the Red Sox have a real chance at Tex or will the Yankees just pay anything to stop it?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:13 PM)
The Yankees will more likely offer the "blank check" to CC Sabathia than Mark Teixeira. But if the Red Sox are serious about Teix, a bidding war seems inevitable.
Wes (IL)
what about the people that bought tickets? is it money lost or like a refund?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:15 PM)
Tickets for playoff games are labeled by the game number being played at the venue in that series. So, for instance, if you had tickets tonight, you have tickets for "Game 1 at Citizens Bank" or something like that. And since Sunday's would then become that game, the ticket, presumably, would be honored for that game. I had tickets for a 2007 Division Series game that was rained out, and that ticket was honored for the next day's game as I detailed.
Steve, Berlin, NJ
Tristan, in your opinion, which team will benefit from this rain delay if either?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:16 PM)
Cue jokes that we're now getting pretty close to Jamie Moyer's bedtime. Seriously, the longer this goes the more I have to think the home team benefits. This is their venue, they have become used to weather like this.
Justin (Philly)
Do you think this rain delay affects what fans bring to the environment given that Philly fans are notoriously passionate?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:18 PM)
Not necessarily, unless any of them are crazy enough to leave. It's a World Series game. Can't see fans who cared enough to score seats for this being any less enthusiastic once the game gets underway than they might have had it started on time.
Edgardo (Caracas, Venezuela)
Who's really interested on K-Rod? Based on need, there are obvious candidates like NYM, Texas, and Detroit, but I don't see any of those teams forking over $50-60 million for a closer.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:19 PM)
The Mets have that new ballpark, though, that could be a cash cow. And if you've heard any New York sports-talk radio, they've been beaten to death by fans regarding their shoddy bullpen. I have to consider them the overwhelming favorites as things stand today.
Sam (Florida)
i think thats way too much for a team to fork over on a closer
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:21 PM)
I'd tend to agree with that. But then K-Rod's steadily increasing WHIP and declining K rate do have me worried about his future.
Tyler (Va Beach, Va)
do you think Manny will ever end up a yankee
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:21 PM)
No. Don't they have enough corner outfield/DH candidates?
Doug (NY)
With the game on hold, let's play some Hot Stove. Please fill in the blanks: in 2009, CC will be a ______; Tex will be a ______; and Manny will be a ______
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:22 PM)
(CC) Yankee, if he wants to take the money, maybe Dodger otherwise. (Teixeira) Angel. But that's a hunch, nothing more. (Manny) Met. Omar loves the guy and they're hurting at the corners.
Zach (CO)
My uncle lives 30 min from the park and he says its still pouring. If the rain lets up how long would it take to get the field ready to play?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:23 PM)
The rain has lasted awhile, and since I'm not a part of a grounds crew, hard for me to pinpoint that exactly. From my experience, though, most times from the minute the decision comes to lift the tarp to first pitch, that's about 20-30 minutes. It's not immediate.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:24 PM)
At 9:18 p.m. ET, our blog indicated that the tarp is coming off the field.
rob (sfo)
the fanatic is the best mascot in baseball
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:24 PM)
I'd agree with that, Rob. And I don't think it's close.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:25 PM)
Looks like the tarp is mostly off now, and first pitch expected at 10 p.m. ET.
Ron (las vegas)
Looking for a new job. Love sports. How did you get to be this guy?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:27 PM)
It's a long story, Ron, but to give you the short of it, I took a stab at a small writing assignment at a magazine I worked for awhile back, for very little money, and worked hard from there to expand the assignments. Best advice I could give anyone who wanted a start in the field is to look into some of the smaller media outlets, work hard, put your heart into it, and good things will eventually come.
Daniel (Norfolk)
Matt Holliday, how much money, how many years, and who is paying him after this offseason ends?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:28 PM)
Well, Daniel, he's not a free agent until after NEXT season. He'll be on the trading block this winter, though.
Eric (Wisconsin)
If this game DOESN'T happen do you start Blanton Sunday Night and Hammels on Monday then?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:28 PM)
This game is apparently going to happen.
Scott (FL)
That holds true for anything you want to do!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:29 PM)
Absolutely. But I guess that just means I'm living breathing proof that it's true!
Greg (Honolulu)
Assume that MLB is going to get this game in NO MATTER WHAT. How many additional rain delays will they allow?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:31 PM)
I think even one rain delay would be positively devastating. Honest, straight opinion, Greg. If you take the starters out of either team's hands that completely changes the balance of a World Series. So I'm thinking none. And from all the reports I continue to read, there shouldn't be any concern of delays. I'm no weatherman, so no guarantees, but sounds like smooth sailing ahead.
rob (sfo)
hey tristan, are you going to get your taco on tuesday?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:32 PM)
Depends how the lines are, I suppose, and if I get a free moment to sneak out for it. Don't know that there actually is a Taco Bell near where I live, surprisingly. I did manage to get my free iced coffee at DandD! Coffee, you are definitely my friend. And I must brew some in a short bit.
Jeff (ATL)
Hey Tristan......What is your opinion on the reserves not being recognized in pregame??????
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:33 PM)
I agree with Matt Stairs. And it's a shame that those players were forced to make a big deal out of it, because it is a big deal.
BO (Indiana)
Who is Trstan H. Cockcroft and what are your affiliations with ESPN?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:34 PM)
I write for ESPN.com's Fantasy Games department. And am a life-long, die-hard baseball fan.
Sherid Sac CA
If the Phillies lost this game do you think Hammels goes 4 and 7 on short rest?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:34 PM)
Yes. Another gut instinct. If it's my call I'd do it. You've got a whole winter to rest him up.
Steve (Houston)
It's a rain delay. Why don't you want to talk about the 2001 World Series? How about 2006? I'm still sick the Tigers lost to an inferior team.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:36 PM)
I don't mind talking about the 2001 or 2006 World Series if you'd like. It's any topic you'd like tonight! Ask away. Just understand, loads of questions coming in, so can't tackle every one. Re: 2006, Tigers did suffer from that long layoff. Can't deny it.
Graham (Concord, Mass.)
I love that this delay allows you to answer the more esoteric questions. And is it really clear down there? I'm in Westchester, which granted is 3.5 hours from Philly, but it's still POURING here. And gusting.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:38 PM)
Hey Graham! Grew up originally in Westchester County, if that's what you mean. Looks like it's letting up a bit where I'm at, but I'm told it hasn't completely stopped in Philly. But enough so that baseball can be played.
Mike (St. Pete)
You are building your team. Who do you take at 3rd base: David Wright or Evan Longoria?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:41 PM)
I don't know that you can go wrong with either player, but right now, I'd likely go Longoria, to get the couple of extra years.
Jason (Philly)
I can see the stadium from my house and it looks like a small misty type rain out there right now.
Mark (St.Cloud)
Hey Tristan! Does Howard come out of his slump tonight?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:42 PM)
I don't think so, but I have a lot of respect for Matt Garza's heat.
Steve (Houston)
Re: 2001 - Brenly should have pulled the Unit in the 4th or 5th inning of game 6.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:43 PM)
Didn't wind up mattering, though.
Tim Bauer (Pottstown, PA)
Hey Tristan, has the start time been announced yet?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:44 PM)
I haven't heard one, but announcements are beginning, so I can't imagine it's much past 10 p.m. ET, if not a couple of minutes before that.
Aaron (Tampa)
Who is the best pitcher in the series out side of cole hamels? Is he playing for the rays tonight?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:46 PM)
Yes. But let's give some kudos to James Shields, he's really not that much less an arm in my mind!
Kevin (Orlando)
This starting lineup music is messed up!!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:46 PM)
Yeah, I'm getting a nice little laugh over this too.
Nick
What the hell is this "Fish" song playing?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:47 PM)
Wife's best comment of the night: If they were going to pick a "fish"-based song, at least pick "Fish Heads"!
trash (ms)
fishy fishy fishy fish fish fish
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:48 PM)
Stop! It's going to get stuck in my head...
Alex (Durango, CO)
What should we expect to see from Garza at the plate tonight? Has he ever even had a major league at bat before?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:50 PM)
Yes, he has had six. And struck out in four of them. Two sacrifice bunts. So I wouldn't expect much.
Jeremy (Los Angeles)
Taylor who?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:50 PM)
I'm apparently not up on my pop music these days. Hey, at least it's not Taylor Hicks.
Jason (Philly)
I think the key to winning the series for the phills is winning tonight with Moyer on the mound. Would you agree Tristan?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:51 PM)
I don't think that's an unfair statement. And c'mon, let's give my boy Jamie Moyer a fighting chance here! As I said earlier, we'll know all we need to in the first inning or so.
Ashley (Tampa)
She's not pop...She's country.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:52 PM)
I stand corrected. Even less up on my country music these days!
Steven (Syracuse, NY)
best baseball movie ever?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:53 PM)
I'm younger, so "Field of Dreams," obviously, but you know, I'm throwing "Major League" up there as a contender. Yes, I'm a fan of those comedies. When I saw that in the theater I don't think I've ever laughed so hard.
Nick
Hey Tristan: I've called every game this postseason so far for the Phillies, I had them 8-3 after 11 games, losing the games they lost. That being said, I predicted Moyer would put together a nice effort tonight, 6ip, 2er -- for a Phillies W. I have the Phils in 6, losing games 2 and 4.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:54 PM)
Can Nick keep up his streak? Time will tell.
Bill (Los Angeles)
The Natural
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:55 PM)
Great movie, but doesn't stick true to the book. Has to take it down a notch, though let's say it's on a pretty high notch to begin with.
Jason (Philly)
Nice choice Bill. I like The Sandlot
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:56 PM)
Liked it, but I don't know, a little silly. First of all, the ending was completely ridiculous. Who puts in a pinch runner to steal home? Would that not be totally obvious? The whole bit with the dog was hilarious though, I give you that. The image of that dog flying through the air and gobbling up the baseball was hysterical.
Nick F (NEw York)
What about sandlot 2
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:56 PM)
Never saw it.
timmy (florida)
will they play soon?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:58 PM)
10 p.m. ET
Jason (Philly)
It was far fetched but then again, this is supposed to be a story being retold by someone remembering his youth. It would have been alittle far fetched and exaggerated as time went by.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:59 PM)
That's true, Jason, and I have considered that. It still does not change the fact that the ending can't be as ridiculous as the stories in the middle. They were adults then.
Jay (Denver)
If Moyer gets shelled again tonight do you think he gets benched in game 6/7?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:00 PM)
Here's a thought: If Jamie Moyer gets shelled, maybe Joe Blanton might be needed for long relief. And that'd make sense because you could slot Cole Hamels in for Games 4 and 7. Just something to think about.
Jenni (Kissimme FL)
On the movie topic, does anyone remeber Tiger Town?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:02 PM)
You know, I remember that movie, boy, was that a long time ago! It's been so long though, I can barely remember much more than that I saw it. Think it was one of those movies of the week, maybe the Disney one on Sunday in the 1980s.
Richard (St. Pete)
Whats the weather look like right now?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:02 PM)
I see nothing that would be troublesome. Doesn't look like any rain this second.
Noam (New York)
Why haven't we seen Chad Bradford, a groundball specialist in any key at bats. Why Price?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:03 PM)
Chad Bradford would be the ideal kind of one- or two-hitter matchups pitcher, especially called upon to tangle with a righty with a man on first. I don't think he has much of a role outside of that.
Robert (Norfolk)
Has there been a day when every team in baseball played on the same day, like what the NHL did today?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:04 PM)
Yes, Robert, happens all the time. But as a guy who covers fantasy hockey I did notice that, and found it odd. Even odder: Tomorrow NO one plays.
John (Cleveland)
When do they announce the winners of the Cy Young award
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:05 PM)
Looks like Nov. 11 for the National League, Nov. 13 American League.
called out critic (las vegas)
glad to see you made through the tea, crumpet, and cheesesteak binge tristan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:06 PM)
I could so go for a cheesesteak right about now...
andrew (seattle)
any time table for when it'll start?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:06 PM)
Moments. Jamie Moyer is warming up.
Noam (New York)
And who do you think will win those awards?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:06 PM)
Tim Lincecum by a hair, and Cliff Lee by a landslide.
kyle (lake o)
how good do you think david price will end being? all star? cy young?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:07 PM)
Multiples on both. Many multiples for All-Star appearances. His talent is THAT great.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:07 PM)
So we're underway, with a fly out by Iwamura to center...
Austin (PA)
Whats your predictions for this game?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:08 PM)
Rays win, probably something like a 7-4 or 8-5 game.
Ray (Philadelphia)
Jamie getting the early calls off the corner is a good sign for the Phils
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:10 PM)
This is true. So far he has looked good, and remember, the last time I said that the pitchers in question got obliterated the rest of the game. If you're a Phillies fan, hope that's not a jinx! But if Moyer looks this good all night, it changes things, as I said earlier.
Joel (Reno)
Tristan, as Fantasy Guru, does your employer ESPN monitor your fantasy leagues to see how your doing in them?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:12 PM)
I don't lie about my performances. I won six fantasy baseball leagues this season. And I've had some bad years. It happens. Was a pretty good year though. I got lucky!
Rutts (New York)
Is it too early to call Longoria going yard right here?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:12 PM)
We'll see!
john (co)
6 out of how many?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:13 PM)
Out of 11, and only one of those teams finished beneath fourth.
Rob (Tennessee)
all I ask is that this ridiculous strike zone is given to garza too.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:14 PM)
Rob, no matter what your opinion is on balls and strikes, I entirely agree that so long as the zone remains consistent within the same game, that's the key. We could ask better from some of these guys, but that's all I require. Consistency.
Johnnie (Ocean Shores, WA)
Where you writing from Tristan? And are you the Simpsons fan?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:16 PM)
Northern New Jersey. And yes, I'm a huge Simpsons fan. Of course, the Simpsons I've come to know and love were the Seasons 3-6 range, those were where most of my favorites came from.
Adam C (Chicago, IL)
Do you know what the croud was chanting to Evan Longoria when he was at bat? The whole stadium was chanting it.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:17 PM)
They were chanting "Eva!"
Jono (NZ)
A BASE HIT FOR ROLLINS!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:19 PM)
Indeed. First one all series!
nancy (nj)
as in whateva?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:19 PM)
Someone (other than me, that is) hasn't been watching "Desperate Housewives"!
Jeff (Tokyo)
What's that in Garza's ears?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:20 PM)
I assume the same earplugs that he was wearing when he pitched Game 7 of the ALCS. And I'm surprised more pitchers don't do it!
Rob (Tennessee)
okay, the umpire really is blind. not biased. that 3-0 strike was horrid
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:21 PM)
It was a pretty generous call, Rob. I'd agree with that.
David ( Tampa)
If Garza implodes will Price go long?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:22 PM)
I actually think Edwin Jackson would be the long man tonight. If one is needed.
Michael (Virginia)
Predicted Winner: PHI(67%). That stupid thing makes this game more tense than it should be. It's the first inning and I'm on the edge of my seat.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:23 PM)
If it's too nerve-racking, take a piece of masking tape and apply it to that spot on your monitor!
Shane F (Winfield, Ks)
Is this the latest a World Series Game has ever started?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:25 PM)
Philly papers are saying so, yes. Previous latest was 9:24 p.m. ET, Game 3 of the 1993 World Series. Which, interestingly, featured a rain delay and was also played in Philly.
Nate (California)
Has Garza looked good in ANY first inning this postseason?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:26 PM)
Yes, a one-two-three first in Game 3 of the Division Series. He also didn't allow a run in the first in his first ALCS start. One run shouldn't trouble him.
Todd (China)
What about two runs?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:27 PM)
Ryan Howard has to make contact for that! Annnnnnnnnnd ... he didn't.
Rob (Tennessee)
that inning was the equivalent of first and goal and settling for a field goal. could be devastating
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:30 PM)
Pretty good comparison there. And that's 0-for-3 already on the night with runners in scoring position.
Benny (Lexington)
Im callin it, a Crawford triple.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:31 PM)
Carl Crawford actually has the second-best career track record against Jamie Moyer of Rays hitters, not that too many have seen him often. Crawford is 9-for-19 against Moyer (.474).
Daniel (Houston)
Doesn't that make teh Phillies something like 1-30 with RISP so far this W.S.?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:32 PM)
It's 1-for-31 from the numbers I have.
Benny (Lexington)
Aww man, guess I'll take a double.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:33 PM)
Pretty close guess, I'll give you that!
Austin (PA)
Does anyone have faith in Jamie Moyer?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:34 PM)
I do, but as a six-inning, three-run kind of guy, and even then I was the guy chatting his NLCS start and he was awful.
Robin (China)
Have you seen him pitch against the Marlins?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:36 PM)
Yes, he was utterly dominant against them. Especially in games AT Florida.
kit (ft walton beach, florida)
does gross have even 1 post season hit?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:37 PM)
One in 16 at-bats, but there's a game-tying RBI on a sac fly for him. Curious how Gross, the lefty, gets the start against the lefty, after Rocco Baldelli, the righty, gets the start against the righty. Joe Maddon sure does seem to play hunches in right field!
Matt (Los Angeles)
vHow many Ks does Moyer usually get per game? Should we expect to see the ball in play a lot for the Rays?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:40 PM)
He averaged 3.7 per start, and 5.6 per nine innings pitched, during the regular season. Stands to reason he's a guy who relies on his fielders, obviously.
Sam (Carmel CA)
Is the stadium still pretty full?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:40 PM)
Looks packed to me!
Fernie Reese (Houston, Texas)
I am working late at the office, so could occasionally provide some updates?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:42 PM)
Absolutely! We're at 1-1 in the bottom of the second right now.
phil (mccraken)
tomorrow will be nuts. both philly teams play
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:43 PM)
And both at home! Be happy the football game is scheduled at 1 p.m. ET. Should ease up the traffic.
Rob (Tennessee)
charlie manuel's love affair with feliz is one of the biggest problems with the philly lineup
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:44 PM)
That IS true, and he did have a miserable .636 OPS against right-handers this season, making his presence in this lineup a tad odd, to say the least. Though, to be fair, what you gain offensively from using Greg Dobbs you might lose defensively.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:45 PM)
Carlos Ruiz bomb makes it 2-1 Phils...
Ben (Atlanta)
for those of us without tv's, how far did that get out?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:45 PM)
Looks like about five, six rows deep in left center.
C (Colorado)
Tristan, Rob Neyer has a wikipedia page, why don't you?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:47 PM)
Beats me. Though, Rob's been doing this an awfully long time and is among the most respected writers in the game. I'd think he deserves one!
kozz (mpls)
did you just call rob neyer old?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:49 PM)
Sigh. OK, longer than I have for sure, is that more definitive? I'm probably not that far off him age-wise.
MK (St.Louis)
This is where Moyer gets hit hard - 2nd time thru the lineup and the Denny's early bird dinner special is long worn off.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:52 PM)
Actually the second time through a lineup this season, Moyer's opponent OPS is .709. First time through? .710.
Stu (NY)
Whats the speed on Moyers ball tonight. He is usually pretty slow.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:53 PM)
The pitch speeds I'm seeing continually range between 75-80 mph.
Jon (Michigan)
With Moyer throwing so soft, I don't see why more hitters tee off on him. I mean, I go to the batting cages and hit 80-90mph pitches more than decently. I'm surprised to see pros struggle so much. Does he really have THAT much movement on his stuff?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:57 PM)
There's so much more to pitching than velocity. So easy for us to say we can do this better, but believe me, the best guy on a semi-pro team might be the worst on a pro team, and I mean lower minors. The old big-fish becomes small-fish thing.
Josh (VA)
What a THROW
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:59 PM)
And an awful slide. Haven't seen one like that in awhile!
Goat (Key West)
C'mon. We dont all have a TV to see this. What happened?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:00 PM)
Rollins singled, then got thrown out trying to steal second sliding with his feet AND hands first. Like a crab stealing second base. Then Jayson Werth singles right after that.
Alex (Durango, CO)
Wow. Upton makes it look effortless out there in center.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:02 PM)
He certainly does. Philly fans probably look at him patrolling center field and can't help but think back to last year with Aaron Rowand.
Curt (Mississippi)
The Flying Hawaiian isn't too bad out there either Tristan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:05 PM)
Nope, he's not and I'm not saying that besides. Though -- and it's not like I'd call this the ideal defensive measure either -- Victorino did have the game's worst range factor of qualified center fielders this season. He's not Rowand.
Phil (CT)
Ugh. I really think Howard should try to bunt down the line with that insane shift they're playing. It's an easy single.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:06 PM)
If Ryan Howard were capable of doing that effectively, A) He'd do it, and B) He'd have done it often enough that the defense would adjust accordingly. So that leads me to believe there's a reason he's played this way, and that he continues to attack as he does.
Josh (Moreno Valley)
Games worse range?, 50 yr old griffey is better???
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:07 PM)
Again, qualified center fielders. And no, Ken Griffey Jr. was noticeably worse in the 32 games he played out there. Ugh, he can no longer man that spot.
Noam (New York)
Howard is paid to hit HR's not bunt singles.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:09 PM)
Actually, he's paid to generate runs the most effective way he knows how. It'd help a guy like that to throw the defense off on rare occasion -- Jason Giambi does it once a blue moon -- but yes, Howard's best chances at generating runs these days, unfortunately, are aiming for the second deck.
Adam (Kentucky)
Pena is horrible against lefties
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:10 PM)
Carlos Pena -- coming into this game -- was 10-for-20 with two home runs against Jamie Moyer coming into tonight!
Nick (Philly)
Jamie!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:12 PM)
Most amazing: That's Moyer's third strikeout of the night, and he made Evan Longoria look silly in that at-bat.
Hali (NY)
Why don't my comments appear????
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:13 PM)
Hali, I can only post and answer a certain number in the amount of time I have in the chat. So if I don't post yours, nothing personal, just a lot out there to tackle.
Joe (Delaware)
4ip, 57 pitches, 1ER? Seems good so far.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:14 PM)
Absolutely. Vintage Jamie Moyer we've seen thus far. I have a hunch if he gives them six innings, two runs allowed, the Phillies will be very, very happy, and in good shape tonight. Big bounce-back by him thus far, bad as he looked past two starts.
Jason (Cali)
lets get those bats going because our pitching and defense are going great
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:15 PM)
True, because I can't see this game being won with only two runs. It's going to take more than that.
IZZY (CHICAGO)
TRISTAN WHO DO YOU ROOT FOR PHI OR TB ???
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:16 PM)
Neither team. I'm watching as a pure baseball fan this postseason.
j-money (Santa Monica, CA)
Tristan is a Phillies fan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:17 PM)
And I've now officially been labeled a Mets, Red Sox and Phillies fans over the years, despite not rooting for a single one of those teams.
Michael (New England)
Do you believe the rays Long ALCS has effected their playing in any fashion?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:18 PM)
To think, before this series most people were talking about the Phillies' time off being the factor! That's how things shift depending on the momentum of the series. No, I can't say I think that's a problem. Last time I can remember where a long, drawn-out ALCS had a noticeable effect on the winner in the World Series was 2003, when the Yankees had pretty much no Game 1 option once they reached the Fall Classic.
Scott (LA)
tristan, do you find one team more deserving of winning over the other?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:19 PM)
I don't think "deserving" really enters into the equation. You ask a true fan of any baseball team and in no way can you make that a valid argument.
Joe (The Plumber) (Ohio)
Tristan and me have sandwiches on Thursday nights while discussing the importance of a healthy starting rotation
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:20 PM)
Do you still owe back taxes on that sandwich, Joe?
Rob (Tennessee)
If the standard is BETTER, I think you definitely have to say the Rays. They were much better over 162 games, especially in the division of death.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:21 PM)
The question was DESERVING, not better. Who seemed the better team coming in? Yes, it probably was the Rays. But that's why you play the series.
Stephen (Tampa Bay, Iraq)
Ugh, is there a minimum length comments need to be for them to display? All I want to say is GO Rays! and Support the troops!
Micheal Scott (Pa)
Who is the Phillies best bench Player?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:23 PM)
That is a GOOD question, Micheal, because I don't think it's automatic. I'd probably say Matt Stairs, but a lot of value in a Greg Dobbs and Chris Coste, off the top of my head. That's a real toughie.
mike (richmond)
I don't see how you don't pull for the rays. They have an incredibly difficult road to get here. It's a great story.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:25 PM)
Absolutely. But as a baseball fan, when it comes to "rooting," I have my team and that's the extent of my rooting interest. Rays are a great story, no doubt.
aaron (Idaho)
whos your favorite team
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:27 PM)
I've made it pretty clear over the years I wear my Yankee pinstripes with pride, when we're talking a pure fan's perspective. And I'll take the inevitable heat that comes with that these days.
steve (Al Anbar, Iraq)
I hate the yankees... GO PHILS!... sorry tristan.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:28 PM)
No problem, you're entitled to your opinion.
Luis ((Laredo, tx))
Were u born in N.Y. or you just became a Yamkee fan cause they win alot?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:30 PM)
I mentioned earlier I grew up in Westchester County, and the truth of it is I lived about 500 feet from the Bronx, and a short drive from the stadium. It's been awhile. I bring up the name Oscar Azocar a lot, if you're a frequenter of my chats...
Thomas (Fort Polk)
I had a lot of respect for some past Yankee players (Tino comes to mind) I just don't like the owners
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:31 PM)
Well, Hank is a tad bit too outspoken for my tastes, I'll grant you that...
Dan (Raleigh)
I had this thought during the ALCS/NLCS... just how depressed would the people of New York have been if it ended up a Philly-Boston World Series... Talk about the anti-Subway Series
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:32 PM)
I actually predicted that initially, and was discussing that possibility with a good friend of mine during the LCS!
B.J. (Wisconsin)
We're all baseball fans, has the crack down on steroids been better or worse for the game?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:33 PM)
I can't see any reasonable explanation for it being anything but better, but there's one thing that bothers me. And it's that when a player performs some incredible feat these days, I can't stand how people immediately jump to the conclusion that maybe it was steroid-related. That's just a real shame that there's such paranoia about the unexpected.
Brittany (Indiana)
Tristan, I have the great misfortune of being a huge Orioles fan. Every spring I tame my enthusiasm, enjoy the ride of early season success that I am so often gifted, and then crumble into reality during the dog days of summer. What does my team need to do to have a simple winning season?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:35 PM)
I find it amazing that a franchise like the Orioles, who managed all those great years in the 1970s into the early 1980s with their pitching, can't figure out that they need to scout, develop and retain top-quality pitching. They've got the cash, that's the obvious problem, finding and keeping these guys.
Zack (SC)
Hey Tristan, do you know when the last time a WS game didn't go the full 9?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:36 PM)
I don't believe any World Series game in history has been rain shortened. Pretty certain of that.
mike (richmond)
I agree Tristan. But I also hate that my own suspiciouns act up when I see something like what Manny did after the trade. I've never seen anything quite like it.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:37 PM)
That was all motivation. He picked the perfect time to step up.
rlewis (pottsburgh)
if ruiz gets on do you condider ph for moyers? say thanks for a solid five?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:39 PM)
No way do I mess with a good thing. No way. Moyer has more work to do.
mike (ny)
Do you think they will ever get rid of the DH rule?? Or imply it to both leagues??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:40 PM)
I think it's here to stay in the American League -- the players' union would never want the lost jobs for veteran sluggers. As for the National League, I can't see them racing to adopt it. So I'd say status quo. Compare it a bit to interleague play; change on that front took what, 30 years?
Noam (New York)
Do you see the Royals as the next Rays?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:43 PM)
Maybe in two, three years. There's still work to be done in Kansas City. Tampa Bay always had this talent rising the ranks, and I'd say it was more prepared to jell this season than what Kansas City has on hand heading into 2009.
kit (ft walton beach, florida)
Go Jamie Nice Bunt
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:44 PM)
That bunt sure did stink. I remember seeing him do a similar thing in a game at Shea last season.
Mario (Miami)
Dnt metion my METS or anything related I'm still in pain!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:46 PM)
Sorry, Mario. I've been taking it easy on my Mets buddies this past season. They're taking it as hard as you.
ted (everett, wa)
these games are often decidedby a late 2-run HRby some unlikely guy --- who might that guy be tonight? thx,THC
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:47 PM)
Willy Aybar? Greg Dobbs? Pinch-hit bombs by either?
Steiny (NYC)
How tired are you right now?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:48 PM)
Not very. My kid allowed me a decent night's sleep. Also, I have a hard time getting sleepy when it comes to a World Series game. We're having too much fun to get tired!
Kit (Sydney, Australia)
Where would the Phillies be without Jason Werth's breakout year? That guy has been great.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:49 PM)
Absolutely. Werth is a tremendous talent, and if there's any knock on him, it's that he hasn't been the healthiest fella over the years. So if you're asking whether he's a one-year wonder, I'd say no, not necessarily, so long as he can stay on the field.
Danny (NU)
What percent of the emails you get call you names?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:50 PM)
Not as many as you'd think, Danny. The negative e-mails I get tend to be centered around so-and-so "crazy" thing I said in a column, or recounting all of my mistaken fantasy football picks. I'm prepared for that. I keep reminding people you'd have no fun with it if you were always right 100 percent of the time.
Joseph (Philadelphia)
Think Moyer can make it to the 8th? One more time through heart of line-up?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:52 PM)
OK, now, see, this is where it gets interesting. This season, he allowed a .292 batting average and .782 OPS his third (and beyond) times through a lineup. So I bet the slightest hint of trouble, the Phils get a guy up in the 'pen.
David (Tampa,Fl)
Do you think the yankee will re-sign Mussina?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:53 PM)
I'm thinking Mike Mussina is going to decide retirement is preferable to sticking around the two-plus seasons he'd need to get to 300 career wins.
Colin (Houston)
Where did the Red Sox go wrong in the ALCS? that was brutal to watch im still hurtin
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:56 PM)
Wasting so many outs on guys like Mark Kotsay was a big no-no in my book. I'd say more than anything that was the most avoidable thing that cost the Sox the ALCS.
Erik (Philadelphia)
Since you can watch the game, how has the umpiring been?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:57 PM)
The times I've been able to glance up to catch each pitch around scanning through questions, I've felt like it's a somewhat generous strike zone tonight. Especially with regard to pitches lower in the zone.
Luis (Milwaukee)
Do you know why the camera angle is so bad? Shouldn't it be right behind the pitcher?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:58 PM)
Like in Games 1 and 2? I liked that better too, Luis. Though I'm not sure they have the setup to use that angle at Citizens Bank.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:59 PM)
Ah, the rare pickoff stolen base.
Brett (CO)
Sigh of relief.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:00 AM)
Oh without a doubt. You know, when he hit that, my first thought was "if it's fair it's gone." Tells you a lot about what the wind must be doing.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:01 AM)
For those who don't have the TV feed, we're 2-1 Phillies through 5 1/2.
evan (ann arbor)
Moyer done for the night?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:03 AM)
I'm actually going to say no. He's at 86 pitches, the pitchers' spot in the order probably won't get up this inning and the Rays have Crawford and Gross due up as two of the first three hitters in the seventh.
Rockett (FL)
Tristan, who you think is going to win the series?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:04 AM)
I don't like to change my predictions, so I continue to stress Rays in six. HOWEVER, if I'm to be wrong, it's in the length of the series, I think -- it goes seven.
Joe (New Jersey)
Looking ahead to later this evenings game (4) who do you think has the advantage with the starting pitcher
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:05 AM)
Ugh, don't say later THIS evening, Joe, you remind everyone that it's past midnight on the east coast! I think the Phillies actually have the slight edge in Game 4. Ever-so-slight. But remember, on paper the Rays had the edge tonight, so you simply never know!
Conrad (Texas)
OUTTA HERE
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:05 AM)
Ah, love that classic Phillies call. Utley goes deep to take it to 3-1, for those who hadn't seen.
Thom (Atlantic City)
No feed again. How far out was that ball?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:06 AM)
Far. Well over a dozen rows, no-doubt-about-it shot. Though it wasn't close to landing in Bull's BBQ, I'll say that!
Tom (New York)
Garza done for the night?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:07 AM)
Obviously not if he's still out there, but he's not long for this game if he give up another hit or two. And, well, he JUST did.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:08 AM)
I expect a TV image of a Rays reliever beginning to warm up any second...
Marcus (Virginia)
About time Howard showed up :)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:09 AM)
So it's 4-1 Phils now.
Joey (Ft. Lauderdale)
Both HR's same spot
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:09 AM)
Close to the same spot. I think Utley's was a few rows deeper, and Howard's a section or two closer to the foul pole. But pretty darned close.
Pat (Philly Burbs)
No picture, but Bradford was mentioned
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:10 AM)
They showed him. It'd be interesting to see whether they'd bring him in for Shane Victorino though. For Feliz, totally makes sense.
Phil (Philadelphia)
Back to back to back?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:11 AM)
Uh, no. Burrell caught looking on a generous strike call, looked inside for sure.
Mark (S. Jersey)
Anyone in s. jersey having cable problems?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:12 AM)
I'm seeing a few people mentioning this, so I'll keep you a bit more informed on the goings-on in the game for the time being. Hope it comes back for you!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:13 AM)
Trever Miller joins Bradford in the 'pen, presumably to counter any possible Phils pinch-hitter should Moyer's spot come up this inning.
rlewis (pottsburgh)
feliz looks lost
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:14 AM)
He can't hit righties, period. Just a proven fact. And whiffs to close the frame.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:14 AM)
So 4-1 Phils through six complete.
Kaine (williamsport)
Very bad call.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:18 AM)
Very bad indeed. This is more an explanation than an excuse for the umpire, but I'd imagine a lot of those guys listen for the ball-in-the-glove sound and match it to the foot on the bag. If you catch the ball with your bare hand, well, might not be the same sound,. Just a guess, sure, but maybe that was part of it, hard to see the foot hitting the bag AND the ball in the hand on a play that close. Bad call, though, and wrong.
john (co)
is moyer the oldest pitcher to start a WS game?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:20 AM)
Second oldest, according to ESPN's Mark Simon. Jack Quinn was 46 when he pitched in 1929.
Alex (Philadelphia)
that is one reason that i wished they would use instant replay more.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:21 AM)
Devil's advocate: Could you imagine what time this game might end tonight if they DID, and had to go into the booth to check out a ton of replays?
Jake (NYC)
Did Quinn win his?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:22 AM)
No he did not, but I can't say that it still means Moyer would be the oldest winner of a World Series game, because a reliever could have done it. He'd be the oldest STARTER to win, for sure.
Patrick (Tennessee)
That was a nice play by Howard.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:24 AM)
Absolutely, but one must wonder how much of a break that, plus his homer, buys him with his critics this postseason?
Andrew (Phila)
Glad to see that standing ovation for moyer
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:26 AM)
He deserved it. Heck of a start by the veteran lefty, showing that, indeed, he is not done.
mike (LA,CA)
Are they going to pinch hit Garza
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:28 AM)
I'd be stunned if they didn't. Could be Cliff Floyd time one hitter from now!
keith (philly)
can anybody tell me why the infield was not in????
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:29 AM)
Well, if you bring the infield in you increase the chances of a ball squeaking through for a hit, and up by three it's better to play for the outs than take the chance of a big inning. Or at least that's what I imagine is the thinking behind it.
Niki (Gainesville FL)
What just happened? How did he score
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:29 AM)
Back-to-back RBI groundouts.
James (S Jersey)
Scott Eyre... huge spot. From a guy who wasn't even on the team till a couple of months ago.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:32 AM)
Absolutely. Though he has had his share of hot stretches like the one he had in Philly in his past. A decent lefty specialist, right call here.
Ron (Bucks PA)
I don't agree with this.....Romero, should be the guy....
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:32 AM)
The problem with J.C. Romero is his penchant for walks. I'd think he gets the call only if there aren't already men on.
matt (jersey)
and now that what eyre is doing!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:36 AM)
Sure was for a second there, but a key strikeout there to close the frame. It's 4-3 Phils heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Joshua (Florida)
So it ends up being a 2-run error by the first base umpire.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:36 AM)
Technically, yes. No better way to say it.
Thomas (Fort Polk)
except you dont know if you wouldnt have made the same call if you were actually on the field...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:38 AM)
That is absolutely true. Like I said before, I can see why it happened. Doesn't make it right, but mistakes happen.
Mike (Tallahassee)
Who pinch hits for Eyre??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:40 AM)
Matt Stairs is 2-for-5 lifetime against Chad Bradford, while Greg Dobbs has never faced him. Have to think it's one of the two. Of course, it might force the Rays to bring in a lefty.
Daniel (Co)
Why does a pitcher release that low, what is the advantage?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:42 AM)
Well, besides the fact that I know Chad Bradford has felt most comfortable delivering the ball that way, the lower release point -- and it being different from a typical pitcher's -- throws a hitter off. Think of it like our Jamie Moyer discussion earlier; the change in speed throws hitters off in his case.
jim (sf)
daniel, read moneyball
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:42 AM)
Very well put, and a must-read I absolutely agree.
louie (new jeresy)
not what we were expecting to pich hit
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:43 AM)
Nope. Can't say I saw this coming, but McCarver has already said Geoff Jenkins is the Phils' best low-ball hitter of the bunch on the bench.
Bobby (GC NJ)
Did Saberhagen pitch like that?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:44 AM)
No, but Quisenberry did. Well, he was close, maybe not THIS low.
Mike (Tallahassee)
what is jenkins lifetime vs bradford?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:44 AM)
0-for-1 now!
DOLFANKIRB (Everett,WA)
Saberhagen wasn't a submarine style, but like Tristan stated Quisenberry was a master of th esubmarine style
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:46 AM)
Dan Quisenberry was absolutely one of the best in his heyday. Not many relievers I'd have wanted out there over him in that mid-1980s time span.
Tom (Atlanta)
So, if the Phillies get out of this game with a win, not only will they be up 2-1, but they will have done it against a team fielding 10.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:46 AM)
I take it this is a joke like those about the Steelers in that Super Bowl a few years back?
Edgardo (Caracas, Venezuela)
Shouldn't Lidge be ready for this inning. Upton, Peña and Longoria are coming up
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:48 AM)
But he's the CLOSER! And you know, that whole conventional wisdom thing, closer HAS to pitch the ninth inning. It'd be creative, for sure, to use your best reliever in the eighth facing these bats. But I'm not counting on it. No knock on Ryan Madson besides. He has pitched well this postseason.
Luke (Texas)
Who needs to win this game more, Philly or Tampa?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:50 AM)
Philly, if only because you can't burn your home-field advantage.
matt (jersey)
maybe madsen, romero, lidge
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:51 AM)
I could see that, but now that B.J. Upton is on, if you use Romero here, and then he doesn't get the out, that's a lot of outs for Brad Lidge to get.
John (Tampa)
likely hood of upton stealing?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:52 AM)
Better than 50/50, I'd think.
Chris (Baltimore)
Why isn't there a day off between game 4 and 5 in the WS like in the LCS?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:53 AM)
I don't have any idea, Chris. Why are there five games in the Division Series instead of seven like in the LCS and World Series? Do either of those things make sense? Is baseball just trying to get creative, making silly differences between the series? I'm actually a fan of the 2-off day-3-off day-2 format.
Geneva (TN)
PEna to deep left field.......
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:55 AM)
Or to deep strike out.
sean110 (nj)
you really like the 2-3-2 format?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:56 AM)
I think I've just grown accustomed to it over the years. My main beef with the postseason is the five-game Division Series, and I've come to learn that in baseball, deal with your gripes one at a time, and the biggest at a time.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:56 AM)
Ouch. What a way for a game to get tied up. Upton steals third, and on the throwing error he scores.
rich (new york)
my biggest gripe os the all star game giving the home field advantage in the world series
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:58 AM)
How else would you decide it? Only fair way I can think of would be to have the team with the better record get it. But I'm sure there are all sorts of scheduling issues with having to wait until you get both teams into the World Series before you know who has home field. You know, hotel booking, etc.
Geneva (TN)
What are the phillies batting with RISP this game?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:59 AM)
Still 0-for-3 by my count.
Paul (Philly)
Well yea but you still had to wait to see if we were goin to Boston or Tampa as far as scheduling
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:01 AM)
Sure, but what if, say, the Phillies had 95 wins, the Red Sox 93 and the Rays 97? I know, LCS also has a similar problem, but I'm sure there's something to do with scheduling an event like the World Series that prevents it.
Nick (Philly)
Who wins the game if it goes to extras?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:03 AM)
One factor to consider is that the Phillies have already burned through four of their relievers, and the Rays have gone through one. So while Brad Lidge remains out there for the Phillies, the Rays outside of that must have the bullpen advantage.
Sean (Philly)
we are going to lose because of an ump
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:05 AM)
It'd be a real shame if that's what the story of this game comes down to.
Colin (Houston)
walkoff in the 9th?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:05 AM)
Sure, by Carlos Ruiz! Stranger things have happened...
zack (tuscaloosa)
why not have the WS at a neutral site like most sports??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:07 AM)
The only one I know of that does that is the NFL, and it makes sense for that because they want to be able to control the weather, despite it being such a spectacle that setting up that kind of event requires so much advanced planning, certainly more than the two weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. Besides, isn't this more fun, with a team's fans being able to see their teams?
Jimmy (new york)
because for 7 games, the fan base probably wouldnt get as much support in a random city vs. in one of the team's hometown
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:08 AM)
Another point: What if you pick, say, Minute Maid Park in Houston and the Rangers are the AL's rep in the World Series? That'd provide a home-field advantage of sorts to that team, but not the other.
Jared (DC)
Tristan, you may be the king of devil's advocate.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:11 AM)
Wasn't that a bad joke in a more recent Simpsons episode? I seem to remember a Devil's Advocate pinball game or something of the sort.
Karthik (India)
Would Phillies try to trade some outs for a run here?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:12 AM)
You can't with Utley and Howard up. Bottom of the order, I could see it. So, most likely, in the ninth inning that might be their angle.
Chris (NYC)
You're thinking of a really bad Keanu Reeves movie.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:12 AM)
That WAS a bad movie.
Bobby (Philly)
Still a run is a run. Thats small ball. Rays did it last game and won that way.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:13 AM)
Would you honestly bunt with Chase Utley to get to Ryan Howard? I know I certainly would not.
Brett (Connecticut)
I would go for it. It would throw the rays off and make them sweat
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:14 AM)
Better play: Fake the bunt and steal second instead!
corey (philly)
do you walk howard if first base is open
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:15 AM)
No, but I'd pitch him carefully. It'd be different if a lefty weren't on the mound.
Mark (SD)
How did worth get to second? What happened to our play-by-play tristen
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:16 AM)
He stole second base.
Scott (Newtown, PA)
Another Phillies base-running blunder coming up
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:17 AM)
Incredibly, Scott said this before Jayson Werth just got picked off second base.
Larry (Portland)
Lidge in the 9th, regardless? (No save situation after the 9th for the home team)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:18 AM)
Well, I would. Once the save is out of the equation you need to simply go your top relievers in declining order (or by matchup).
Brian (Utah)
why won't Ryan Howard strike out already
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:20 AM)
Don't worry, Brian, he did. Whiff looking. Tied at four through eight.
mike d (boston)
how long will lidge go if the game lasts 14 innings and he comes in in the top 9th?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:21 AM)
Really depends on his pitch count, Mike, but I'd imagine he could go two innings if he's efficient enough and it's needed. Problem is, use him too much and he might not be as effective tomorrow.
Sean (Blacksburg)
Does Tampa go to Wheeler? For a closer he gives up a lotttt of runs. I wouldn't mind seeing Price go in again.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:22 AM)
I'd imagine so. David Price might have made sense this past inning, but not the ninth, with Burrell, Victorino and Feliz due up.
Phil (CT)
I doubt Feliz will be batting.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:25 AM)
I think he might, since he's obviously the best defender the Phillies have at third base and it's risky to put a lesser defender there at this point in the game. It'd be a bold move.
Taki (Chiba, Japan)
why dont they ph for gross? please tell me - the man can't hit lefties
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:27 AM)
I have absolutely no idea. Did you know he has a career .519 OPS against lefties? And he batted .191 with a .585 OPS against them this season. It just makes no sense to me either.
Homer S. (Springfield)
How 'bout them Isotopes?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:28 AM)
I hear they're moving to Albuquerque.
Matt (Kansas City)
gross has a knack for the clutch
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:29 AM)
Really? I see nothing in his RISP, men on or "late and close" numbers to suggest he's a super clutch hitter. A .804 OPS this year in those late and close is the closest thing to it, and it's not like that's an overwhelming number. I'm sure almost all of it came against righties, too.
Edgardo (Caracas, Venezuela)
Lidge is ready for the 10th
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:30 AM)
Yes, I'd call that a definite advantage, having Romero breeze through the ninth inning like that.
Tim McCarver (2)
Ah think the team that scores last will win this game.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:31 AM)
What'd be even funnier would be if that turned out to NOT be true! (And yes, it can happen, if the Rays score twice in the 10th and the Phillies score once.)
Jay (Phils suck)
wow we got bruntlett up who aint to good...victorino who doesnt have a hit tonight and then feliz...i say our best chance is a lead off walk off homerun by bruntlett
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:32 AM)
How insane would that be if Bruntlett goes deep twice in one World Series?
Aaron (baltimore)
Eric Bruntlett looks really clutch in his ESPN picture.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:34 AM)
And now, at this critical juncture of this ball game, we delve into the discussion of "clutch," I imagine?
Chris (Salt Lake City)
What was that? HBP? Gamecast isn't really clear.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:35 AM)
Yes, hit by pitch.
sam (PHILLY)
Do you believe in clutch hitting?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:37 AM)
Not really. I think certain players have more trouble in such situations, but if you gave everyone a full season's worth of "clutch" at-bats -- think a reasonable sample size -- the numbers would even themselves out more than you'd think.
tom (seattle)
you must be exhausted... ready to go home yet?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:37 AM)
Fortunately, Tom, I am home! But I don't mind one bit. No World Series game could bore me.
michael (Boston)
How's Balfour's postseason been?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:38 AM)
Outside of that one disastrous game in Boston, pretty darned dominant.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:39 AM)
Wow, incredible. A wild pitch, and then an error on the throw to second base gets Bruntlett to third.
jonah (SB)
that was bad
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:39 AM)
It has not been the prettiest of nights on the basepaths, that we can say for sure.
Charles (Philly)
All Feliz needs to do is hit his trademark useless popup
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:41 AM)
Well, he can't now that Greg Dobbs has been announced as the pinch hitter.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:41 AM)
This is an interesting one, going with the five-man infield! Bold, bold call.
Adam (Seattle)
They gotta walk Dobbs too
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:42 AM)
And almost assuredly will, then go with five infielders playing short, and two outfielders.
Juan (Mexico)
if the rays get out of this inning alive then what do we chalk up they Phils inability to score with RISP? Voodoo magic???
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:42 AM)
Only one sentence could explain it: "Shoulda gotten the live chicken."
mike (mayetta ks)
whats balfours gb/fb ratio?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:44 AM)
Um, it's 0.53:1, or was in the regular season. That does not bode well.
Peter (Albuquerque)
ruiz with a walkoff just like you said
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:44 AM)
If he hits one out I'll have scared myself...
Ali (Boston)
can i know what the heck is going on? why would they walk the bases loaded? triple play?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:45 AM)
They have to be assuming the infielder-to-home-to-first double play, then they can go back to normal defensive positioning to try to get the third out.
Will (Town of 10000 losses)
Stairs in the on deck circle
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:46 AM)
As he should be, seeing as a sacrifice fly is really all that is needed.
Spencer (Des Moines)
There's the game!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:47 AM)
Evan Longoria's throw sailed a TAD too high to be caught for the force, wouldn't you say? That's the ball game, Phils up 2-1 in the series.
JL (Bethesda)
Wow. Was that going to roll foul???
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:49 AM)
Maybe, but it'd have been close enough that Longoria must have felt taking the chance on the force was warranted. Decent chance it could have trickled foul, but that's a split-second decision.
sam (singapore)
what happened - how could u get an IF hit with the IF playing in?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:49 AM)
A soft chopper to third base that Longoria couldn't get to in time to get the force at home.
Matt (ATL)
It's tough to Judge if it were going to roll foul like that-personally I would have fielded it too, because I wouldn't want have to have lost a world series game on a ball that MIGHT have gone foul
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:49 AM)
Exactly.
kurt (tq)
great game
Tristan H. Cockcroft (1:51 AM)
Absolutely, Kurt. And a great chat everyone, I've had fun sticking with you tonight -- we almost made it to six hours! Take care, get a good night's rest and I'll see you back here for Game 6, should we get that far...
