Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Billy Tucker
Send in your questions now and and join Tucker at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday!
Billy Tucker (3:00 PM)
Thanks for joining today. Looks like we have a lot of questions on remaining uncommitted players and our latest release of the ESPNU 150.
Not totally sold on the latest 150 order but at least you guys at Scouts Inc. are watching film and have some arguments for your rankings. Gilbert's jump was much deserved can we expect another by signing day.
Billy Tucker (3:01 PM)
We are aiming to update after the high school season and will have a good chance to evaluate many, including 8 out of our current top-10 players, all week at the Under Armour game in January.
joe (new orleans)
i see that Shepard has jumped to #1 in the 150. What kind of an impact do you think he can have at LSU in 2009, and will it be as a QB or as a WR?
Billy Tucker (3:02 PM)
Joe we obviously think Shepard will have a big impact at LSU and from the developments we have seen this year it will be as a quarterback.
Is Branden Smith a done deal to Georgia? When's he going to become a Bulldog?
Billy Tucker (3:03 PM)
I spoke w/ Branden last night, he's announcing at our Under Armour game. Had good things to say about Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, FSU and Florida.
Billy Tucker (3:04 PM)
I would say the Bulldogs will be tough to beat for this in-state talent, said he had a great visit at Tenn. (All Amer. DB E. Berry was his host) though and wouldn't be surprised if they end up strongly in the mix.
Why has Ciere Wood made such a drop when he is putting up rediculous numbers?
Billy Tucker (3:05 PM)
Mike he is still rated pretty high at 23. Good numbers but we question the comp. a bit and are not sold on him yet as a fulltime RB in college.
Max (Southern Cal)
Where do you feel Manti Te'o is headed at this point? Hoping his teammates commitment sends him to Westwood!!!!!!!!!!
Billy Tucker (3:06 PM)
I originally thought he was a strong lean to USC with ND close behind, but he is keeping his options very open with his final 5 schools
Billy Tucker (3:07 PM)
His dad emailed us this week saying he had a good trip to UCLA (just had two teammates commit there this week and Norm Chow appears to be a big influence) and has three trips lined up in Nov. to Stanford, ND and USC before he narrows it down.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Should Michigan be concerned about having players decommit or is it just part of the process when dealing with 17-18 year old kids?
Billy Tucker (3:09 PM)
Hey Matt, part of the process but from the recruits we have spoken with in that class -- I think most know this is a rebuilding season and Coach Rod just needs some time to get his own guys in there to fit his system
Mike -- Twin City, Ga
Georgia RB commit Washaun Ealey. What can you tell us on him. (visits, opinions..etc)
Billy Tucker (3:10 PM)
Mike we love him as a back and feel his is underrated because people are questioning his true top-end speed and level of comp.
Billy Tucker (3:10 PM)
Have not heard any conflicting reports that he or LB Moody are looking elsewhere
Michael (Warsaw IN)
Where would you rank Charlie Weis and his coaching staff against other coaching staff's recruiting wise?
Billy Tucker (3:11 PM)
I think Weis has an alluring presence about him as a recruiter -- one the more recognizable faces in all of college football which is important.
Billy Tucker (3:12 PM)
His pedigree having tutored Tom Brady and coordinating three super bowl titles with perhaps one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time is also appealing
Billy Tucker (3:13 PM)
Weis works at as well. Kale Ane, Manti Te'o's coach told me last week Weis flew in for a game at 2pm and then left right at 8pm -- long plane ride on a bad knee.
Any news on the recently decommited QBs from VA, Newsome and Boyd?
Billy Tucker (3:14 PM)
It appears Boyd's visit to Tenn. went very well and they are his leader but BC and Oregon will put on the press as they both need a QB in this class and he would be a great fit, particularly with the Ducks.
What is the status on Debose? and what about his two other teammates?
Billy Tucker (3:16 PM)
Charlie you will have a chance to watch all three in Orlando at the Under Armour game. We might not know until around that time where they are headed.
Matt McCloud ( Murfreesboro, TN )
Where do you think the talented Marlon Brown will end up?
Billy Tucker (3:17 PM)
Originally thought to be an in-state lean with the Vols, I think their disappointing season and speculation on Fulmer's future has him very open.
Benjamin (Oshkosh, WI)
Does PennState have a chance with any of the remaining big time Recruits?
Billy Tucker (3:18 PM)
PSU's class is already deep but think it will close strong down the stretch for its remaining spots, particularly if it is still in the national title picture.
Billy Tucker (3:19 PM)
I think they have more than just "a chance" with LB Jelani Jenkins and WR Bryce McNeal. Coach Larry Johnson has done a great job landing some of the better players out of Md. this year. Jenkins is wide open though.
What can you tell me about underrated GT commit Jemea Thomas?
Billy Tucker (3:21 PM)
Hey Ben, we actually are still tracking done BCS guys to evaluate and just recently did Thomas -- he is a really good one.
Billy Tucker (3:22 PM)
Great athlete could fit into Johnson's scheme as the wingback (runs that offense in high school) but I love his ball-hawking skills at safety. Big time sleeper, Johnson has an eye for talent.
Reading lots of good stuff about Vlad Emilien's visit to UM, he had to realize how badly we need DBs after that game, we know he already likes the Big 10, do you think Michigan has a shot agains some other schools like OSU or Wiscy?
Billy Tucker (3:23 PM)
We think Emilien is going to make a good strong safety wherever he ends up and is very underrated nationally.
Billy Tucker (3:24 PM)
I would say Mich. or Wisc. -- Buckeye's only have a few spots left and I don't see him as one of the top-tier remaining targets on their board, especially with the injury.
Kyle Omaha, NE
Do the huskers have a chance with Gabe Lynn, Kennan Graham, or Corey Adams?
Billy Tucker (3:25 PM)
I think Pelini is making strides in Lincoln and will land players like Lynn and Adams in the near future but it will be tough this year
Billy Tucker (3:26 PM)
Look for Adams to make his decision at the Under Armour game in January, so a lot could happen until then.
Jeff Sr - Montebello, California
If a player is rated 70-79, do the recruiters look at potential and size, more than that players actual performance now?
Billy Tucker (3:27 PM)
70-79 is a big gap. At Scouts inc. a 77-79 is a very good college prospect in our eyes and yes, he is often a player who lacks the size at this time or polished skill set to be an 80 (a potentially a contributor as a true frosh)
Mitch (name that begins with M)
Has the recuiting on Chris Bonds cooled since his knee injury?
Billy Tucker (3:29 PM)
Not last we spoke with him, he is set to rehab and recover fine. ND and USC still after him hard.
Chris (Fairmont, WV)
Billy, Big ND fan here...When is Shaq Evans going to pull the trigger? What kind of prospect is 2010 QB Jake Heaps? Is he the real deal? thanks
Billy Tucker (3:30 PM)
Think ND has a good shot with Evans and he would form an explosive duo w/ Floyd. Still think D Walker will emerge too.
Hello Sir Tucker!! What do you think the chances of Jelani Jenkins, Manti Te'o, and Shaquelle Evans attending ND next year are?
Billy Tucker (3:32 PM)
Hello Sir Cole!! A lot of ND questions today. I think they will be strongly in the mix for all three and think how they finish this 2008 season will be a factor.
Any news on who Travis Hawkins will pick tommorow? Does it help Penn State that they are his friend Jason Ankrah's favorite?
Billy Tucker (3:34 PM)
Penn State actually has a handful of the top Md. players which will help but I would lean toward Maryland tomorrow. We are set top speak with him shortly after the announcement.
Chris (Miami, Fl)
Whatdo you think about linebackers Shane Gordon and Austin Gamble?
Billy Tucker (3:36 PM)
We like Gordon a lot, a top-10 ILB. Needs some polish and work on his reads but plays fast and physical -- is a punishing tackler
any chance Ohio State pulls in Adams, Hall from Glenville or Marlon Brown?
Billy Tucker (3:37 PM)
I think they have a better chance with Adams and Hall at this point.
bob (jonesboro, AR)
Will Arkansas' recruiting class finish strong? Any big names still considering the Hogs?
Billy Tucker (3:39 PM)
Bob I think they could be done landing top-tier prospects at this point and will need to concentrate on keeping guys like Winston and RB Knile Davis content. Davis has a chance to very special, saw senior clips of him today.
Where do you have Tennessee's class ranked? We need some hope in Knoxville for the upcoming years.
Billy Tucker (3:41 PM)
Kevin, they were 13 in our last class rankings BEFORE Oku committed. What a 1-2 punch with him and RB Giles. Potential top-10 class which is a bit surprising with the disappointing season.
Greg - South Bend
Hey Billy, What do you think of coaches offering to kids as freshman and even middle school? Do you think that is too early?
Billy Tucker (3:44 PM)
Greg I do think it is too early and it surprises me when teams like Boston College are doing it and they have less than 10 commits in their current 2009 class. You figure that's where their focus would be.
Billy Tucker (3:45 PM)
Thanks for joining everyone, got to run. Look forward to chatting next time!
