Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:02 PM)
Kidder is here!
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
Hey guys, it's great to be here. Finally, there are some incredible matchups this week that should be a lot of fun to watch. Let's get rolling with the NFL questions!
Pete (Houston)
What is your thoughts about the Giants/Cowboys...i think it will be much closer than people are expecting even with BJ @ QB...
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
Thanks for the question. The interesting thing about this is that teams that play the Steelers the week before usually don't play well the next week. I think this game will be closer than what most people expect. But considering what the Cowboys have done the last few weeks, you have to love the Giants in this one.
Gayle (CT)
Did you ever think you'd see the day when we'd say the Bears OFFENSE is better than their defense?
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
No, I didn't. However, you have to love the way Kyle Orton has played this season, which has been completely under the radar. Matt Forte was a great pickup and the interesting thing is that this defense is going to get healthier int he second half of the season. That puts them right in the position to compete for the NFC North crown.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Is it time for Brooks Bollinger to take snaps in Dallas?
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
Very close. Brad Johnson will start this game, but he will be on a very short leash. Watching him play last week, you didn't see the movement or arm strength. But the biggest thing you didn't see was the accuracy. If you don't have arm strength, you can get by on accuracy.
Samson (east LA)
Bernard Berrian doesnt get talked about much for his play on the field. Has he developed into a true #1 option. He certainly looks good to me so far, and has a good matchup this week. Will he get any love?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
Absolutely. You always get love when you go out and do your job. He has done that. He's had a great year. The thing about it is that he's still bothered by a toe injury. But the one thing he's done is create the vertical downfield threat which makes teams cautious on how they want to play against the Vikings explosive running threat. I just can't buy into the Vikings, because this team has underachieved.
John (Miami)
The Dolphins have a HUGE game this weekend. Considering how easy their schedule is in the second half, if the Phins win this one do you see them potentially making a run at a playoff spot?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
This is a huge game for them. If they can beat the Broncos on the road, I do see them with a possibility of a wild card spot. The key will be can the Dolhpins defense be effective in space against that Broncos passing attack. We know Denver can't play defense, so the Dolphins need to score some points.
Chad (Cascade,MD)
Ravens/Browns who iwns?
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
I like the Ravens in this game. I'm not completely sold on the Browns right now, but you have to give Romeo Crennel a tremendous amount of credit for keeping this team focused. This team has won three of the last four. You knew they were going to win last week after how they handled the Winslow controversy.
Paul (New York)
Nominating anybody who tested positive for the water pill for the Matt Millen award this week.
Paull (Atlanta)
Are the Lions better with Daunte Culpepper if they sign him?
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
Paul, the Lions are better with whomever they sign. This team is in love with their players and that needs to end. I would get him signed. But I can bet you anything that they're probably having a difficult time getting added years on the contract. It's easy to sign him for the rest of the year. But the Lions probably want more, but the agent wants more money. If I'm Daunte, I don't know if I want to play in Detroit.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Goodell for the Matt Millen award with these fines!
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Burress for the Millen Award!
Thomas (DC)
I just cant see Portis doing much against the Steelers run D this week, especially if Santana Moss is out. Steelers shut him down and cruise to victory, right?
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
The way this Steelers run defense has played this year I don't know if any back in teh NFL can get over 100 yards. This is a very big game for Washington and are in dire need of a bye. That's why I'm taking the Steelers on Monday night.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Who should be nominated this week for the Matt Millen award? Berrian? Goodell for all these fines? Burress?
Shawn (Jamestown, NY)
Do you think the Bills will bounce back this week with a win over the Jets?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
I think this is a must, must win from Eric Mangini and the New York Jets. They need to step up and win this game, but I just don't see how they're going to do it. I like Buffalo at home.
thomas (DC)
Santonio Holmes for the Matt Millen award
Ryan (FL)
Favorite in the NFC South? Will it come down to the Week 17?
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
Carolina is my favorite team. They're the team to beat in the South. But what a great, great division it's been this season. I love the Bucs defense, the Saints can score on anybody and without a doubt Atlanta has found their franchise QB in Matt Ryan.
Jeff Toms River NJ
Millean Award to the Officiating crew from the Eagles vs Falcons Game. They completley blew that call & the outcome of the game
Vinnie (NYC)
Can we officially say that the Chargers are Philip Rivers' team now? Is LT ever coming back?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Yes, without a doubt. And you, as an organization, want your QB to be front and center with your team. I think Rivers has played great this season.
Sam (Lake Bluff, IL)
Keith, who has been the Bears biggest disappointment this season: Tommie Harris or Nathan Vasher?
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
Injuries have effected the defensive side of the ball. The best thing for Harris was to get suspended and hopefully he can come back healthy in the second half of the season.
Samson (east LA)
I nominate Mike Singletary for the opposite of the Millen award.
Vinnie (NYC)
I am feeling a Detroit upset on Sunday! Do you agree?
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
I think you might be in the Kool Aid a little early on a Thursday afternoon. The Bears coming off of a bye? I don't feel you. But since we're talking about the NFC North, I'm kind of feeling a Pack upset in Nashville.
Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo, NY)
Will I ever break 100 yards this season? My line is terrible!
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
Marshawn, don't be trying to throw your line under the bus. Teams have been keying on you. Stay patient. It will be difficult this weekend, because the one thing the Jets have done well is play against the run. But there will be plays to be made in the passing game.
Brady (Bowling Green, OH)
KK, with the Browns winning 3 of 4 lately and having the majority of their games at home in Nov., can I let myself get excited or will I have to endure another Browns losing season?
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
You can officially get yourself excited. This game on Sunday is a huge game for the Browns. 4-4 compared with 3-5 at the halfway point of the season is huge. Shaun Rogers has been a beast. Another good job by Matt Millen.
Cliff (NYC)
We must elect Norv Turner as president of the Millen award club--he snatches defeat from the jaws of victory like no coach I have ever seen.
Ali (herndon, VA)
Keith, do you think its possible for the redskins to get home field advantage throughout the playoffs
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
Yes, I do think it's possible. This game Monday night is the swagger game. If they can win and get to 7-2 at the bye, what an incredible job Jim Zorn has done. This is a big game for them. With three NFC East games still to come through Washington, absolutely.
Jason (Indiana)
What do you think of Cedric Bensons performance so far in Cincy?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
I think the Bengals have a huge amount of problems. I'm not impressed with either RB in Cincy nor the OL. Yes, I know the best player is not player. However this team threw in the towel in the second half last week. Hopefully they can find a way to get it turned around, but I don't see it happening.
Paul (New York)
Santonio Holmes is another good option for the MM award. I switch my vote to him.
Matt Millen
Come on, Kidder, give me some credit. I did draft Cherilus and Dizon. Oh, wait.
Ryan (San Diego)
The defensive players have come out in the last two days and basically said in not so many words that the scheme was the problem with the defense and a lot of them were losing faith which resulted in poor play. Do you see Rivera sparking them to regain their form and making a run back to the playoffs and further?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
They should come out because it's just as much their fault as it is Ted Catrell's fault. The thing to keep an eye on in San Diego is that Norv Turner better get this team to the playoffs or else he might be looking for another employer. This team has GHASTLY underachieved.
Adam (Jersey)
Cliff, I don't know if he's better than anyone. Romeo Crennell tried pretty hard to find a way to lose that game last week... Stupid players ruined it.
Dave (Denver)
The Broncos defense for the Millen award.
Trent Edwards (Buffalo, NY)
Don't you think i should be in the MVP discussion? I have carried this team on my shoulders the whole season.
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
Trent, I don't think you're even close in the way that Drew Brees and Clinton Portis have performed at this point in the season. But keep up the good work and get your team into the playoffs. You are a good, young player with a bright future.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, What are your thoughts of a Super Bowl rematch of the Steelers and the Giants?
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
I'm going to throw that one out there to SportsNation. Let the Nation decide. It's early for Super Bowl predictions. It could be anybody.
Majeed
So you gotta prediction on the Fins/Donkeys game?
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
You're being hard on the Broncos, aren't you? I can feel your excitement all the way here in the great state of Kentucky. I'm going with the Broncos. This team had to sit there for two weeks after getting embarrassed on Monday night.
Ryan (San Diego)
I think Norv is safe. He is the offensive/qb guru and that part of the team is playing very well. The defense was Cottrell's job and he was AJ Smith's guy. I think on that merit alone he will have the 2009 season no matter what. It would be a different story if the area he specialized in was struggling badly but its not
Vinnie (NYC)
Should Tenn be considering selling high with Vince Young?
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
I would be shocked if the Titans tried to move him in the offseason. Even though there'll be teams that would be interested, but I don't know how many. The best thing that can happen to Vince Young is what's happened to him now - sit over there and watch. Kerry Collins has been a good mentor for him.
Matt K ( The Burg, PA)
Matt Millen award to all these great athletes who make money playing a great game and can not stay out of a stupid life style.
Jake (VA Beach)
Would a Boldin for Plaxico trade make sense?
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
Jake, the Cardinals would be absolutely nuts to even try and move Boldin in the offseason. He still has a lot of time on his contract. And with that system and passing game in Arizona, it's been amazing. Warner and the way he's played this season has been incredible. Last game in Carolina, this team lit up a very good defense. Warner kept making plays while getting hit in the pocket.
Mike (Az)
Does Jake have an extra chromosome? Why would the Cards trade an equal talent for one of the league's biggest headaches?
John (Miami)
Can Joey Porter win the DPOY? He is on pace to break to sack record you know. And although I dont think he will break the record, I can see him getting up around 18+ sacks.
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
He's having a phenomenal year. He's very much in the race. He's going to have to maintain it. We all know that numbers are critical in winning this. I don't know how you can jump over Albert Haynesworth and how he's played in Tennessee.
Pete (Houston)
Bud Selig for Millen Award
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Who is the most underrated GM in the league?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Thomas Dimitroff in Atlanta. Before it's all said and done, this franchise will be rocking.
Johnny (Knoxville)
Chad Johnson suggesting the Bengals can go 8-8 for the Millen Award
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
Super Bowl? You'll get a preview of it next week when the Bears host the Titans. Yes I'm calling it, Bears vs Titans will be your SB this year. Am I crazy?
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
Yes!
Ron Rivera (San Diego, CA)
I'll be coaching the Chargers next year.
Adam (Jersey)
Did you ever think you'd be saying that about Kerry Collins?
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
Yes, because Kerry Collins has been to a Super Bowl. What people don't realize is that QBs are extremely hard to find. That's why the very successful ones play for a very long time.
Jeff(TX)
Does the AFCS have the NFL's best young OTs? Roos and Stewart are both pro-bowl caliber. Ugoh will be good and Winston is near the best RTs.
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
Without a doubt. This OL has been very very impressive. The way Kevin Mawae has played has been great too.
Jason (Indiana)
Not that I am a fan of the Lions but can anyone seriously get the organization heading in the right direction of winning again?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Yes, but I think for this franchise to turn around, William Clay Ford Jr. needs to take hold of the reigns. I think he'd be awesome with running the team and putting the team dynamic together.
Adam (Chicago)
When did Kerry Collins WIN a super bowl? He lost a super bowl, Brad Johnson WON a super bowl, so he's good. Wait, nevermind.
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
I meant to say he's BEEN to a Super Bowl.
Liam (Houston)
Do the Niners get a top 5 pick this year? Do they take a QB or M. Crabtree?
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
Possibly. The only reason I say that is that they play in the weakest division in the NFL and might be able to steal some games. QB is going to have to be a huge need unless Shaun Hill can prove he's the future. But Michael Crabtree would be hard to pass up.
Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)
That's a personal foul against Ketih for editing his response that said Kerry Collins had won a Super Bowl, 15 yards and repeat 3rd down
Jake (Duluth MN)
T.J Whosyomama said that the Bengals will win two games!!! Two to many if you ask me.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Who wins the Matt Millen Award?!?!?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Drum roll.........
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Vernon Davis, no doubt. In all my years in the NFL, I've never seen a player get kicked off the sideline and GO!
Matt (new york)
Think this Plaxico situation ever get resolved? Or we keep seeing him getting suspended by Coach Coughlin?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Matt, if I'm Plaxico Burress, I would keep my mouth shut and do what I'm told and I might get a second ring. We know Coughlin is about the team and he won't put up with these distractions and he shouldn't.
Roger Goodell (NFL Offices)
Ed, you cannot ref games or spell Keith correctly.....you're fired!
Tom (Detroit)
The Lions are horrible, but the Roy Williams trade was a steal. Now that Millen is gone, we should get three starters via the draft.
Matt
What about the Giants Reese as an underrated GM?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Great call. He's right there too.
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
Also Ernie Accorsi, because he left him with a pretty good team.
Lou (Deptford, NJ)
Phillies are World Series Champions!!!!!!! Sorry, wrong room ...
Geoff (DC)
Norv Turner continues to flop as a head coach everywhere, but continues to do great things with the QBs (even Alex Smith played well for him!) How much credit does he get for the play of Rivers this season, and how much blame does he get for the way the season is going?
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
Both. I think Norv Turner is a good playcaller and he puts Rivers in position to make plays. He executes. This team has not had a healthy LT which puts a stress on the OL.
Wes (Atlanta)
Is there an offensive and defensive ROY award and, if so, is it not possible the Falcons take home both with Ryan and Lofton?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
My midseason offensive rookie of the year is Ryan and my midseason defensive rookie of the year is Jerod Mayo.
Matt
Do you think Steven Jackson plays this weekend? Its not looking bright.
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
Matt, I think it will be another gametime decision and they'll check him out on Sunday morning. They need him back in the offense in the worst way. They could really have used him last week against New England.
Jason (Ohio)
Sounds like the Browns & Winslow will part ways at the end of the year. Do you think we could get Vernon Davis and a 2nd rounder for Winslow? Or is he damaged goods?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
It sure sounds and looks like that will happen. However the biggest key for Winslow will be the health issue. If he's healthy, there will be a lot of teams interested in him, no doubt.
John (Florida)
How can Matt Jones still play this week after his appeal was heard a few days ago?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
Yes. If something's going to happen, it will happen by Tuesday. Teams are in the thick of gameplanning and then have the rest of the week to prepare without him. Based on what I saw last week, he was the only offense they had against Cleveland. He's had a very good year, more than I anticipated.
Matt K (The Burg, PA)
kidder if Samuri Mike Singletary is telling you to get of the sidelines you go, I think he could still play middle linebacker for a few teams.
Jas IOWA
shouldnt the BEAST Brandon Jacobs be a SCARY player.... ask charles woodson and laron landry if they ever wanna tackle him again???? (and im sure there are plenty more) GO G-MEN!!!
Joe (New Orleans)
has any QB done more with less at WR than Drew Brees? If this guy isn't the NFL MVP, something is seriously wrong.
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
Joe, Drew Brees is my MVP. And he's played better than any QB in the NFL this season.
Anthony (NYC)
Hey Kidder as I watched the MNF, I'm not sure if it was just me but the Titans gave me flashbacks of the SB Champ Giants of 1990. With the play of the defense & they're commitment to running the ball, thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
Anthony, Jeff Fisher has built this team from the inside out, much like the teams from the early 90s that were in the NFC East - Redskins, Cowboys, Giants.
Jared (New Rochelle, NY)
HELP ENTERTAIN A BORED KID IN CLASS!!!!! When does Kenny Phillips see the field? He has that prescence that neither Butler or Johnson has. And he can play the deep ball!!!
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
He's seen the field in certain sub packages and also on special teams. Full time wise? I guess when the coaching staff feels comfortable in keeping him out there and he can beat out Michael Johnson.
Spark (Chicago)
Speaking of Jeff Fisher, who is Coach of the Year at the midway point
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Spark, I'm going with you, Jeff Fisher. Great call.
Randy (NY)
When is Reggie Bush due back?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Reggie Bush is expected back after the bye. But you never know.
Jerry Jones (Irving, TX)
so who should i go after once i am done with wade phillips? think nick $aban would give me a listen?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
Absolutely not. What coach or personnel guy wouldn't want to work for you, Mr. Jones?
Bob (Bean Town)
What are your thoughts on Wilfork? Will he learn from this or will it take some time off without pay to get the message?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
He is a great great football player and he's a perfect fit in the Patriots system. I think he'll learn from this. He's a great young player that will continue to get better.
David (Houston, TX)
Who wins...Texas Tech or Texas?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
Texas. Go Colt McCoy!
Matt
Where do you think Steve Spags ends up next year as a head coach if he leaves the Giants?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
There will be a ton of jobs and he will be at the top of a ton of teams' lists. If the Giants get that first round bye, he'll have a great shot, but if they don't, he might get shut out again like he did last year.
Brian (Chicago)
Re: Shaun Rodgers as a beast. I was watching the Brownies game on Sunday with some friends and decided that Shaun Rodgers fighting a smallish bear (say 6-7 feet tall) would be highly entertaining. So Kidder, who you got: Shaun Rodgers or smallish bear?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
Definitely a smallish bear. Definitely. Great question, though.
Majeed
Will the AFC West winner finish better than 8-8?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
I'm saying 9-7.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What is your upset special this week?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
Pack over the Titans.
max (MD)
Hey Keith is there any award given to coordinators? Steve Spagnuolo lost his starting de's, 2/3 of his starting lbs and his starting safety, all while keeping a top 3 defense in the NFL. How can he not get some sort of award?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Hey, Spags has done an incredible job in New York, but if I'm giving out an award, I'm giving it to Rex Ryan in Baltimore. They play at a high level. They've had injuries and still find a way to cover them up.
Eric (Sioux City)
Not just Rogers, but Stroud and Jenkins have also proven steals.
Ed (Boston)
Pats/Colts prediction?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Colts.
julius jones
Is my starting role vanished this week?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
Good luck.
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder from what I've seen of McFadden in Oakland & his college career at Arkansas, doubt he's can tote the rock 25-30 times in a game, but he looks like a bigger version of Reggie Bush. Should Oakland use him in the same manner?
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
Unfortunately he's been injured. Once he gets healthy, I think he'll be used in a lot of different ways. I think the big thing in Oakland is the development of the QB. They're an undisciplined, struggling team right now.
Joe Addai (Indy)
how much has the team missed me?
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
A ton. The Colts have got to find a way to get the running game going, which has been inconsistent. Hopefully they can get it going Sunday night. That will be key in this game.
Geoff (DC)
Just regarding the question on who would work for Al Davis - After Dan Snyder went through a bunch of head coaches with a chainsaw, ending with the absurd firing of Marty after only one season, many coaches said they would not work for him... we've had some fine coaches since. Terrifying as Davis may be, I suspect when push comes to shove, a lot of coaches will jump at the opportunity to get back in.
Jack (Newark)
Thanks for skipping my question. This is why I think the media hates the Buffalo Bills!
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Glad to have you in the chat. Come back next week. If you're a follower of the show, you'll know that we think highly of the Bills and we don't bash the Bills.
Jim (MS)
TB or KC?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Tampa Bay. It's going to be a long day for Tyler Thigpen and the Chiefs offense.
Jay (Middletown, CT)
Both Ryan Clady and Joey Porter have been really good this season, with Clady being a rookie. Who gets the best out of this matchup on Sunday?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
I think Clady does on Sunday.
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
It's a different environment playing in the thin air out there in Denver. Hard for visiting teams to get used to.
Ron Winters (thrown the most flags in the NFL)
That's a personal foul against Jack from Newark for complaining about the chat. 15 yards and repeat 3rd down.
Eric (Sioux City)
Is there anything needier than a Bills fan. They're like a 6th grade chick.
lance manion (baton rouge)
I'm a huge Joseph Addai fan. Could tell when he was at LSU that he was going to make some team a great pro RB. Can the Colts right the ship now that it appears he's returning to the lineup? He's the perfect back for their offense.
Justin (Nashville)
None of my questions come up, and im not cursing or anything. What gives Keith what gives...
Ryan (San Diego)
Will the Chargers be that 9-7 team?
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
If they are, they'll be the AFC West champion. But I think that'll be the best they can get. They still have to play at Pitt, Indy and at Tampa Bay. This team is 2 losses away from having 7 losses.
MIKE (NARANJO)
NO
Tom Brady
Should I be worried about my job security? Im mean, Giesel has been eyeing Matt Cassell quite a bit lately!
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
Never.
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
Another fast and furious hour. Make sure you check out my Monday Night preview show on PodCenter. Everybody good luck, have a safe and fun weekend. We'll talk to you next week.
