Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks! Welcome to our chat. We've got some good fights this weekend and make sure to check out the new notebook, which is posted. Let's get right to it.
Dane: (Colorado Springs, CO)
Any chance that with povetkin out as Wlad's opponent that we can see Wlad v. Valuev. It would be nice to see that hairy giant get KO'd.
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
You will not see that fight right now. Wladimir is close to a deal with Rahman for Dec. 13 and Valuev is going to fight Holyfield on Dec. 20.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, Happy Halloween, Im hyped for the Darchi-Mijares fight more then any of the other fights. What are your pick in all the fights ?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
You should check out my blog from yesterday -- it is filled with media picks on the Mijares-Darchinyan fight. But I like Mijares to win a convincing decision in that fight. He's just got more skills and speed and more overall game. Vic's chance is to land a big punch.
Chris (Boston)
Hey Dan, whats the update with Andrade-Bute II? I would love to see those two go at it at maybe a new location (maybe Buffalo?)
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Andrade's people have protested to the IBF and Bute said after the fight he would give him a rematch, so I think there's a pretty decent chance it would happen. But if it did, I would think it would be back in Montreal, where there is the most money for that fight.
Phillip (Austin, Texas)
Dano, so DLH is bringing in Dundee similar to how Holmes brought in Arcel for the Cooney fight. It worked for Holmes will it work for DLH? Thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
I think having a wonderful boxing genius like Angelo around can't hurt at all. If he sees even one or two things to share with Oscar and Nacho it is a good thing for them. He will also help with the publicity because Angelo is terrific with the media.
bubba, Ottawa,il
Dan, buy or sell the chavez ppv card this weekend?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
I have to say that I actually really like the overall card. I know there are tough economic times but if you gather a few guys together and each pitch in $5 or $10 bucks, I think it will be a good night of boxing entertainment. I detailed why I really like the card in a recent blog but I love to watch Arce, Chavez-Vanda 2 should be a war like their first fight, I also really like Donaire and his opponent is a very live dog. Then there is a decent step-up fight for Lamont Peterson and I am also anxious to see the pro debut of Korobov, who was a blue chip amateur and has a big pro future. All in all, I think it's a very good card even without one big mega fight on top.
JP (Columbus, OH)
DTM, way to represent the freaks. Someone tried to use the "Banishment" moniker in an MMA chat yesterday but Jon Anik wasn't having it. He said Dan the Man said so!
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
LOL! Anik is my boy.
George (Lebanon, NH)
Dan- Did 24/7 get you pumped for Calzaghe-Jones next week? I hope it can help fill up MSG!
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
I've been looking forward to that fight even without 24/7, but the show opener was an excellent overview of the guys and I am really looking forward to Sunday's second episode.
HialeahLuis Miami ,FL
DAN "the envision boxing"Rafael Happy halloween what do u think about joel the love child as u baptized the outcome vs Sergeii Dzinziruk
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Joel Julio is in a tough fight this weekend but it's his big opportunity to win a title. I've been in touch with his camp and he is ready to go they say. Tough style for him, but Julio is a p retty determined guy.
mike costa rica
dan, dzinziruk vs julio and sturm vs sylvester sat. what are your thoughts??
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
On the Sturm-Sylvester fight, I have a feeling we're going to see an upset with Sylvester taking care of business. I do not think Sturm has looked so good in his past few fights and Sylvester is darn strong.
SHOWER DOOR - Las Vegas
Peter Buckley cant retire until he fights me!
Freaks
We want more of Joe C's hot girlfriend on 24/7.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
I have already made that comment to some HBO folks -- half joking, half serious!!!
Paul (Carlsbad, CA)
Dan, do you think Mayorga is too strong of an opponent for Angulo at this stage of his career or is he the perfect fit in your opinion?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
I absolutely LOVE that fight. I really hope Gary Shaw and Don King can make a go of it. From what Gary told me, HBO likes the fight also. It would be absolutely sensational.
Bubba, from ottawa, il
I will buy, thanks dan. Oh and thank you for the great job you do keeping us freaks up to date with the latest boxing news.....Take care.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Enjoy the ppv!
Ron (Albany, NY)
I spent an hour last night watching old RJJ fights on YouTube and it got me really amped for November 8th. Do you have a favorite Roy fight or moment? His KO of Jorge Vaca was sick!
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
That Vaca KO was pretty good. I think I have to say his knockouts of Virgil Hill (best body shot ever) and Glen Kelly (the chicken knockout) were memorable. I also was ringside when he played with John Ruiz. That was quite a moment to see him win a heavyweight belt after all the years of talk that maybe he would move up and go for it.
Matt G. (Chicago, IL)
Danno, does Buckley have the record for most losses?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Believe it or not -- no.
Jose M La Habra CA
Hey Dan what do you think of tomorrow night's fight between Dirrel v. Oganov?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Dirrell has so much speed and also good power and is young. Oganov is a one-trick pony -- great power. Dirrell gets sloppy sometimes and could get caught, but I think you have to like Dirrell, who has about a trillion times more skill and speed.
Jeff (alabama)
Joe C's place in the HOF. What ballot and can it be influenced with a loss to Jones?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Automatic first ballot, regardless of what happens next week with Jones.
chris (boston)
dan buy or sell more ppv buys for calzaghe vs. jones than palvik vs. hopkins?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Definitely buy. It will easily beat Hopkins-Pavlik. EASILY.
Angel, Carson City
Dan, I can't wait to watch Gamboa fight again. Do you think he will box again before the end of the year?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
I don't think he will but I would expect him back in early 2009. I know that promoter Artie Pelullo, who promotes Cassius Baloyi (a 130 titlist) and Cristobal Cruz (a 126 titlist) has told the Gamboa camp he would be willing to match either of those guys with Gamboa.
Zowild
With the economy being the way that it is; how much do you think the DLH/Pacman fight takes away from other ppv buys that have and are going down this fall?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
It will hurt some, no doubt.
Joe (NYC)
It seems as though, according to your notebook, Shane-Tony is going to happen. 1)Any word on the site yet? 2)Where does that leave Berto?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
It does seem as though that fight will happen and I would suspect Las Vegas, but Arum told me they will look at all options for the fight. I think it could be in Los Angeles as well. It leaves Berto perhaps to make a mandatory against Collazo.
Matt (Seattle, WA)
Danamanic -- For a guy on your top 10 PPP list, doesn't Mijares have a lot of split decisions against relatively top-level competition? Munoz, Navarro (admittedly on a pretty bad card from Doug Tucker), Kawashima 1 (which he nearly got knocked out in and probably shouldn't have won). On the RJJ highlights, Roy's knockdown of James Toney when Toney tried to match Roy's showboating might be my favorite boxing moment ever.
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Mijares getting a split with Navarro or Munoz was a joke. He won both EASILY. I watched the Munoz bout on PPV and was ringside for Navarro and neither fight was very close in my opinion. I also saw the Kawashima fight and despite a couple of shaky moments, he also clearly won that as well in my opinion.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
If Donaire moves up, any chance of a fight with Mijares?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
If Donaire wins tomorrow, the plan is for him to fight Arce, who also needs to win.
Edward (NC)
Can you reveal your Fighter of the year list so far?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
No.
John, NJ
How horrible is the WBC? I heard they are stopping a potential Berto/Cotto fight forcing Berto to face his mandatory. How great would a Berto/Cotto fight be?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
The WBC can do what it wants but it has nothing to do with that fight not happening.
Tom (Montreal)
In your opinion, did Bute really beat the count? The neutral corner call was really pitty-patty...but its good that Bute is offering a rematch
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Yes, Bute beat the ref's count. He was on his feet by around 7.
Michael (Roxbury, NJ)
Dan although Bernard put on a great show... do you think the low PPV numbers are a testament to how bored he has made the fans in his last 3 or 4 fights with his defensive style of fighting?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
I'm sure that has something to do with it. Given the entertainment value of Bernard's recent fights I'm sure that played into the minds of some folks on the fence about buying it or not buying it.
Zowild
Dan, do trainers ever get voted into the HOF? If so, do they have to retire and wait 5 years before being inducted?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
There are many trainers in the HOF. They are not voted in like fighters. They are considered by a different panel and they do not have to be retired.
Henry, Calgary, AB
Dan, some people have argued that the ref should have waived off the fight after Bute was being knocked around the ring by Andrade in the last minute - do you agree?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
You can make that argument although I do not personally agree with it.
Evan (Syracuse, NY)
Dan, when is the next Montiel fight? And presuming Mijares takes a win tomorrow will they fight in their next bouts or anytime soon?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Someone needs to check the espn.com schedule. Montiel fights this weekend in a nontitle bout in Mexico and it is going to be televised on Azteca America along with the Ulises Solis title defense.
Jon (DC)
When a PPV like Hopkins-Pavlik bombs like that, how much money does Arum/Golden Boy lose?
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
The show probably didn't lose all that much money. Between the ppv dollars and the gate (which was more than $2 million) there is enough money to cover the guarantees of the fighters and the undercard. But they sure didn't make much and may have lost some. But promoters don't like to take all that risk, work hard promoting an event for a few months and then either lose money or break even.
Rick, Marina, Ca
It sounds if the Mosely-Margo fight will be on HBO not PPV ???
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
Correct. It will not be a PPV.
Jeff (phoenix)
Dan, No disrespect intended I just would like to know how you have Mijares ranked above Chris John in your P4P rankings...everything Mijares has done John has done better...length of time as trinket holder, quality of opposition, etc...
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
I disagree on the point about better competition.
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Mijares has also been more active.
John (Denver)
Any word on how the Khan/Pacman sparring went?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
I was given a video file of it and although the video was brief, from what I saw it was pretty spirited. Khan held his own but Pacquiao landed some good straight left hands -- but who doesn't get hit with Manny's straight left?
Pancho, Los Mochis
Is there even one fight on the Jones -Hopkins undercard that is worth watching? What a waste of rare tv exposure. So pathetic.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
The undercard is very weak, but one fight that should be entertaining is Figueroa vs. Emanuel Augustus.
Dave, San Jose
I don't think it will happen, but if Pacquiao gets torched in a few rounds, how foolish will you feel?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Not at all. It could happen. But the fight is going to be a big fight for boxing, which was always my point in supporting the fight. I don't ever second guess myself.
Jeff (alabama)
C'mon, prediction on Paulie and Ricky.
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
Talk to me in three weeks.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, sparring w/ Manny can only help Khan, its already a great move hooking up Roach!
Rick,Marina, CA
I saw that Arreola could be a possible opponent for Wladamir, chances of actually happening? I have a feeling Arreola can actually bang with Wlad and maybe win if they ever fought.
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
That won't happen. If they ever do fight, it would be a fight here in the US, not in Germany.
Pribs (Bethlehem, PA)
I got an email at work listing Jones vs Calzaghe at a 20% discount for premium seats. Could be lonely at Ringside!
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
You're right. Tickets are dead for that one.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Is Donaire's opponent decent challenger ? Does he a have a chance? Same question for Arce's opponent
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
I absolutely give Donaire's opponent a chance. I saw his last fight, which was the eliminator to get the title shot against Hussein Hussein, and he is a legit guy. Arce is fighting Isidro Garcia, a former titleholder. Garcia is not what he once was but neither is Arce. Arce should be able to win but I expect blood.
Oscar (Tempe, AZ)
Hey Dan when De La Hoya beats Pacquiao on dec.6 will he crack your pfp list?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
He's already on the list around 14th or so.
Choco, New Jersey
Dan, I need a new insomnia cure. What should I watch, Foreman vs. Barrett or Dib v. Luevano?
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
Michael Moorer vs. Vaughn Bean should do the trick in 20 seconds. Or maybe a little Chris Byrd vs. DaVarryl Williamson.
Raymond (Baltimore)
Road Warrior Hawk and DANimal, I know you announce your pick the day before a fight, but typically how far in advance do you form your opinion??
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Sometimes I know my pick immediately, sometimes I like to see the fighters and talk to them the week of the fight. Every bout is different. By the way -- the Road Warriors -- best tag team ever.
Jeff (phoenix)
Dan, Buy or sell....Kessler will never face legit competition again.
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Sell.
bruce torrance,ca
do you think wlad vs rahman will be competitve? i think wlad would kill rahman
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Rock always has a puncher's chance and certainly won't be intimidated fighting overseas.
Kent - St Catharines
How's it going Dan? Do fighters like Peter Buckley, Reggie Strickland etc. Who would have difficulty beaten a cardboard cut out of a fighter give boxing a bad name? Buckley hasn't won a fight since 2003. If a doctor hadn't had a successful surgery or a lawyer won a case they wouldn't have a job for long. It seems only in boxing can a fighter be this bad and still keep fighting.
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Guys like that may lose, but boxing needs opponents. Those kind of guys serve an important role -- they help give younger fighters needed experience, they are available on short notice when you suddenly have a pullout on a card and they are durable, so you know you'll get rounds out of them. They have a special place in boxing.
Everardo (Chicago, IL)
Hello Dan, which websites contain the best blogs/forums for trading old and recent fight videos (ESPN)?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I don't use them. I have my own network of folks I have been dealing with for years.
Yorkis (Philly)
Yorkis LOVES your pick of Sebastian Sylvester this weekend! Sturm is slowing and may get flattened like Javier Castillejo.
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
I see Yorkis is now like Roy Jones, talking about himself in the third person.
Danny, Gergeen, OH
Hello Dan, if Haye can blow by Barrett, do you think we will seem him on US television in 09?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Even if he doesn't blow him out and just wins, I think you can be assured we will see him on US TV next year.
Kelly, Toronto
Dan, has Victor Ortiz' opponent been finalized for Dec 6?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
He's supposed to be facing Jeff Resto.
Herman, K-Town
Any news on the missing Ghost of Gilroy? Talk about wasted momentum.
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Guerrero's arbitration result should be in at any time. If he loses, Dan Goossen will remain his promoter and they'll have to patch things up. If he wins, he will be out of his contract and I expect him to sign with Golden Boy and perhaps, if there is time, wind up as the fourth TV fight on Dec. 6 on the DLH-Pac undercard.
Yorkis (Philly)
Yorkis likes to talk like Roy Jones to hype Yorkis up for Roy's fights!
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Dan Rafael thinks that is pretty funny.
Freddy, Toronto
Dan, have you heard any rumours about ESPN2's FNF debut in 09? I'm excited!
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
No rumors just facts -- the first show is Jan. 9. You can expect to see a lot more of me on the show this coming season.
Yorkis (Philly)
Emmanuel Augustus on the Calzaghe-RJ undercard? Yorkis needs to go get his bong!
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Well, Dan, the moment is almost at hand for the Love Child. Is he going to pull it off?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
I have no idea. My head says no, my heart says yes.
Josh (Indy)
With Bika back in the mix, is there any word on Codrington? is he going to fight again? I'm concerned that, like you've said, he is a ruined fighter.
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Jaidon is supposed to fight on the Versus card next month under Bika-Mandredo.
Rick (Grand Rapids)
Underrated KO: Glen Johnson KTFO Roy Jones Jr. That one hurt just watching it.
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Sick KO.
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Lampley's call on that knockout was chilling too.
Jimmy (Mobile, AL)
Hey Dan- Thoughts on the first 24/7 episode? I know there is no Floyd and Roger, but I really enjoyed it. Roy brings the energy!
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
I liked it a lot even though it didn't break any new ground for me. But it was thoroughly enjoyable and, as I have said many times, the production values are supreme. It's just a beautiful show to look at it and you know I love the music.
Hialahluis Miami,Fl
Dan any u.s tv outlet for joel julio and dzinziruk tommorrow.
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
No.
Choco, New Jersey
Dan, I am looking forward to watching Urbano Antillon fight again. Who is his promoter and can they position him for a title shot in 09?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
Antillon is an excellent up and comer who just cracked my top 10. He is promoted by Top Rank and has a Telefutura fight coming up.
Rich (Stamford CT)
Any chance that Demetrius Andrade or Deontay Wilder will be televised in their upcoming fights? Will HBO give us some highlights at least?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
Andrade's pro debut was televised but I am not sure about TV for his second fight. Wilder is supposed to be on the Taylor-Lacy undercard in his debut and I would expect HBO to show a clip of the fight.
Rick, Marina, Ca
I nver saw the first Chavez Jr-Vanda fight but a few of my friends told me how Vanda should have won and how the mexican fans booed Chavez in Mexico, Wow, how did you see it ?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
It was a great fight, an FOY honorable for sure. I thought Chavez eked it out.
Eric (Columbus, OH)
Dan, don't you think Mayorga's kind of a bigger step up for Angulo than promoters usually mean when they talk that way? Potentially TOO big a step, at least for a next fight? For a comic book villain with measly skills, he still has lots of heart and punching power.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Angulo wants to step up and his handlers believe he can handle it. Mayorga, even though he lost his last fight and has lost to his biggest name opponents, still represents a significant test for a lesser experienced fighter. I really hope that fight happens. I absolutely love it. When Gary Shaw mentioned it to me a few days ago, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Michael (Toronto)
DTM, out of curiosity, do you live in "real" Virginia or "fake" Virginia?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
I am not sure what that means. I live in Virginia and love it here.
Matt - Safety Harbor, FL
If Winky Wright wins his upcoming bout, who do you think he will fight next? With Pavlik losing, the middle weight division appears wide open.
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
If Winky wins on Versus, he'll be back on HBO probably in March, but no set opponent. There has been talk about Arthur Abraham.
JR (Chicago, IL)
Many say No.Va. is fake Virginia
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
It's real Virginia to me.
Joe (NYC)
Any word on a 12/6 opponent for JuanMa yet?
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
Not set yet. There has been some talk about Sergio Medina, but I am told they are apart on money. There has also been talk of Antonio Escalante, who looked great last week destroying Mike Oliver. But Golden Boy told me Escalante injured his hand and they were not sure if he would be ready for Dec. 6, so it is still open as to who Lopez will face.
Jon (DC)
After the results of the Senate and Pres race in VA, NoVa will seem like real VA.
Barack Obama and John McCain
Listen up Freaks! Get out and vote on Tuesday! Or we will strap you down and force you to watch a compilation of John Ruiz' most boring fights!
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I encourage all Freaks to vote. I will be up early Tuesday to go and cast my vote.
Jeff (CT)
Dan have you heard anything of Rau'Shee Warren turning professional?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I have heard nothing actually.
rob (jersey)
Dan - RAD tomorrow night or are you at the fight?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
I am home this weekend and plan to watch both shows on the big screen before hitting the road for fights five of the next weeks. But no RAD tomorrow night.
Vasyl Lomachenko
American Father, should I turn pro for you?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
I wish.
Pringles Russia
Where would you rank, Wladmir and Vito Klit brother in all time great heavywieght champs of all time list?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Neither are on the list at this point.
Tomas(Tx)
Any word on De La Hoya's weight right now? Still early, but is he close to 147lbs already?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
I don't know where he is today but when I was with Oscar in Las Vegas for the Marquez-Casamayor fight in mid-September he looked fit and told me he was already down around 151.
Joe (NYC)
How 'bout a "graduation night of the rising stars" card? Angulo-Mayorga, Gamboa-Cruz, and Martinez-Julio (win or lose tomorrow). Any chance?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
Brilliant. That would be a sensational card.
John (NYC)
As bad as the HW division is, watch Holyfield somehow oitpoint Valuev to make things even more pathetic.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
OMG.
rob (jersey)
Angullo/Mayorga - sounds like a fun time to me. Hope Shaw can make that fight happen.
Robin (Van Nuys)
Hey Dan, I ran into you at the 2nd Pavlik/Hopkins, thanks for taking time to share your boxing wisdom...quick question, is Mosley/Margarito happening? And if so, does Mosley's boxing give Margarito problems?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
They fought twice??????? Anyway, Mosley-Margarito will be a great fight if it happens. I think for Shane to win he will need to box more than he has in recent fights and he could give Margarito some issues because Shane is still fast, even if not as fast as he was.
Eric (Marysville Ohio)
DANtonio Banderas... you got me pumped about Pavlik possibly fighting in Youngstown!! Ever been??
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
No and I really like going to place like that to cover fights -- places where they care about the fight and places I have never been. I enjoyed my trip to Little Rock for a Taylor fight and to San Juan for a Cotto fight and places like that. I would really be psyched to cover a Pavlik fight in his hometown.
Jackson (IA)
Could you see Bernard turn trainer once he hits 70 and finally retires? One of the more intelligent fighters we've ever had...and that shoulder roll should be taught to everyone...
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
If Bernard wanted to make that committment to teach younger fighters what he knows, I think he would be a tremendous trainer.
Dave, San Jose
Boxing fans are the most fickle out of any sport. Before the Cotto fight not many people were that high on Margarito and now he is being made out to be an unstoppable force that cannot be beaten
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
You are right and that stuff drives me crazy. Margarito is the same fighter today as he was before the Cotto fight -- really good, really exciting but definitely not unbeatable.
SL (NY)
I didn't know you were fluent in Spanish....nice notebooks in 2 languages.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
I'm not, although I should have paid better attention in high school Spanish class. The fact is the fine folks at ESPNDeportes.com translate the articles.
Rob (NYC)
I heard a rumor of Cotto's comeback fight being against Berto. That would be a real good fight - any truth to that?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Not true. Ahhh, rumors.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
D-Nice, sorry I'm late. I was curious as to whether Marquez stayed in Germany this whole time or if he came home once the fight was delayed. Do you know?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
No, Raul came back home to continue training and will go back to Germany a week or so before the fight.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
Do any of Roy Jones Jr. son's box?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
I asked Roy that during one of our diary sessions and he said none of them do.
Berndawg
GOT--Does Devon Alexander have an opponent for China and any chance he makes the TV portion of the 12/11 Versus broadcast? Thanks
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
I'm really surprised a veteran Freak like you, Berndawg, would not check the sked and see that indeed Devon does have an opponent for the China card. His status on the Versus show is up in the air until after the China fight.
Ed H (New Hamp)
Dan Boxrec shows that Margarito and Mosley are fighting Jan 24th. Why didn't you tell us the fight was announced and finalized?
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
As usual, Boxrec jumps the gun with it's rumor-filled schedule.
Dave, San Jose
Is James Toney fighting Tony Thompson?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Yes and I will write a story on it after this chat, so check back afterward in the news headlines section of the boxing page. I will give you all the details.
Rick, Marina, Ca
When you watch the fights at home, do you invite some friends or is it just you and the misses?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
I like to watch the fights in my house alone for the most part.
Banishment (Granite State)
Live free or don't read your notebook and die!
Mike, South Dakota
Julio is a 3-1 dog? Won't Julio win this fight? I understand that it is in Sergei's backyard but the Love Child is clearly the better boxer...right?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child again. Julio is not as good a boxer as Sergei but he is definitely a bigger puncher. I think it's a fight Julio can win, but I think Sergei deserves to be the favorite.
Jon (DC)
Dan, why are many boxing sites (one in particular) so fond of putting up press releases? They are just worthless hype from the camp that wrote it.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
I never understood that either. It may be because a lof the sites do not have actual journalists working for them. Press releases are useful, but they are meant to provide information for a reporter to use in a story that is crafted, not just thrown up as the promoter wants something spun. And not every release is really newsworthy. A journalist and editors are supposed to make that judgment. Frankly, straight press releases on a web site are a waste of time.
Ellie (TX)
I know you say Roy has a chance against joe, but who do you Want to win? I mean this in terms of future possible fights.
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
I honestly couldn't care less who wins and I have zero rooting interest. I know it is hard for you to believe that but in 99% of the fights I do not care who wins. When you cover the sport like I do, you really need to separate from fanhood to a certain degree. Now I love boxing but one of the things I have accepted in return for having a wonderful job is that I have put aside a certain element of enjoyment and emotion I would put into the sport if it wasn't my job. It's a trade off but it is worth it.
Randall (Tampa)
Dan forget the ref's count. Bute was out on his feet, which the ref openly admitted to the Showtime crew. That fight should have ended in TKO!
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
As long as he was on his feet before 10 and the round was over, he wins. Andrade simply ran out of time.
Jackson (IA)
Before you answer Ellie's question and say that you have no rooting interest in fights...PLEASE admit that you wanted Dib to get knocked out, we all did...
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
LOL!
Joel Julio
Hey Dad! I made weight and I am ready to go! Wish me luck!
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Good luck son.
Kevin (NYC)
Dan the Man I am so hyped up about Winky vs Michi Munoz, my dream fight FINALLY coming true!!!
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Seek help.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, are all these people who wanted the Bute/And. fight stopped the same people who complained when JCC/Taylor fight was stopped w/2 sec left?
Chris (Va)
Hey Dan did you hear about your Giants using the Cotto/Margarito fight as inspiration for their win last Sunday?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
I hadn't but if that is true that is pretty cool.
Randy (PA)
Is there any chance David Haye could move up the heavyweight rankings to see a big fight against one of the Klitch bros. And do you think he could win, I have never seen him fight.
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
There is a strong possibility that Wlad and Haye will meet in the first half of next year.
Nick (Fairfax, VA)
I'm honestly not trying to be condescending, but citing Boxrec as definitive verification of an upcoming bout is a quintessential rookie mistake for boxing fans. They really ought to run some sort of disclaimer on their schedule.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan, can we give some more props to Versus for becoming a nice alternative TV outlet for solid fights. With the type of cards they have the next couple months it helps fill the void of WNF...
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Yes, I have given Versus much props. By the way -- Versus is also going to show Toney vs. Thomspon, meaning three shows in December (Dec. 4 with Winky, Dec. 11 with Cunningham-Adamek) and Dec. 13 with Toney-Thompson.
Wiz (FLA)
Who's more annoying...British fight fans or Philly sports fans?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Boston fans.
Chris (Rotterdam Jct, NY)
I hope no other "boxing news outlets" spoil the contender finalists. I hated knowing that brewer was in against forbes or that bika was in against jaidon. I wasnt even looking for that info and it was spoiled.
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
I agree. I already know the finalists but you won't find me giving away the results like some others would love to if they knew.
Everardo (Chicago, IL)
Good call regarding Bute-Andrade: Bute was up at around 7 or 8. Poor Andrade, Bute was OUT! Too bad Richard Steele wasn't the ref.
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
The fact that Bute was basically out when he got up did not matter because the fight was already over as long as he stood. The round had ended other than the count. Once he was up, it was over.
Tim (Des Moines, IA)
Dan, in the spirit of the election season..........I know you and the freaks are often frustrated about the number of PPV's and what fight is PPV worthy and what isn't. But considering we can't expect any "sweeping change" in boxing, I for one want MORE PPV's. I want MORE choices. If I like, I buy, if I don't like, I don't buy. Where am I going wrong?
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
It's an interesting take, but I guess it makes sense. Like if I could pay $19.95 and watch the card from Germany this weekend on my TV, I would gladly pay for it rather than scour the net for a stream.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Hey Dan, If you're preparing to watch a great fight at home what makes the ultimate Rafael fight night meal/menu?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
I leave that up to my wife, who is great at coming up with interesting things, especially for the big Sunday night WWE PPVs I watch.
Marty, Fresno, CA
Dan, did you dress up for halloween today????
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
I haven't but I may bust out my Don King wig (I really do have one).
Jon (DC)
Dan, point of clarification. Doesn't the fact that a fighter cannot be saved by the bell mean that despite the fact that the round was over (and fight) and Bute was on his feet the ref can still wave the fight off and award a TKO?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
In essence, the rounds are 3:10, not 3:00. But once he's on his feet sometime between 3:00 and 3:10 it's over. That was what happened. Bute went down with about 2 seconds left in the fight. He was up by about 3:08. Therefore it's over and no reason for a ref to stop the fight. It's really not that complicated.
Don King (bathtub, Las Vegas)
Dan-o if you wear the wig, I'll wear my Dan Rafeal beard! Splish-splash!
Marty, Fresno, CA
how did you enjoy Cyber Sunday lol?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Yes I did. Batista-Jericho match was great.
Dave, San Jose
My understanding is that the bell cannot save a fighter in any round, including the final round. So even though he got up, he was still out and the fight should be called.
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
He wasn't saved by the bell because the round was already over other than a 10-count, which he beat. We are done with this topic.
Tom (Topeka)
DTM, do you wear your Don King wig in the tub! Splish Splash!
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
That's a little too personal.
Alex(Bristol,CT)
will kirkland be on the Hatton-Malignaggie card?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Yes.
Banishment
Next question about being saved by the bell is going to have to deal with ME!
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Happy Halloween Dan!, You always share your scores and opinions of fights. I was wondering if there was a decision in a fight that you totally disagreed with even though you were in the minority?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
Not sure if this counts, but I thought Oscar definitely beat Mosley in their rematch.
Sam (Houston)
When can we expect another Roy entry from training?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
We are supposed to talk again later today and I would expect something to be posted Monday.
Mark (Youngstown, Ohio)
We hear Rubio is up next for Pavlik somewhere in northeastern Ohio. Any idea as to when?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Someone needs to read today's notebook.
JD, Saratoga NY
I dunno if you know this...big game this week. Your Saratoga HS Football team taking on Shen in sectionals!
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Nice. That brings back memories. I will have to check the local newspaper Web sites and see what happens. Go Shen!
Dustin Diamond
I know a lot about boxing and Saved By The Bell, so you guys can ask me.
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Brilliant.
Ed (Dallas, TX)
Speaking of saved by the bell, who wins Zach or Slater at 175?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Slater was a wrestler and I also know Mario Lopez a little and he's a cool guy, so I have to go with Slater, although Zach was a little shady and he would cheat to try to win.
Allen (Idaho)
Is Mosley a hall of famer, or still left to prove?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Definite HOFer in my book.
John (ATL GA)
Dan, it keeps being brought up but is not on the scedule, so I must ask..Is the Holyfield fight a done deal?
BANISHMENT
People who don't read the notebook are GOOD for my health!
Everardo (Chicago, IL)
Dan, buy or sell: if Bute-Andrade II occurs, Bute stays outside and wins a comfortble unanimous decision?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
Probably.
Rocco (Queens)
Please give a percentage change that Holyfield wins against Valuev?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
10%
Gene (South Carolina)
Dan, I'm honestly excited about Winky's return. I'm originally from the St. Pete area and he always does local interviews before and after fights. It's great to see a guy who loves his hometown. He is by far my favorite fighter. I may be biased, but I think he beat Hopkins and could still beat Abraham or Pavlick.
A.C. Slater
I'll kick Preppy's butt.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, speaking of Mosley HOF do you think he could beat ANY 135lber ever on a given night?
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
I do. As a lightweight, he had everything.
Shawne(Miami, FL)
What do you think of the young prospect Daniel "The Golden Child" Jacobs? I've seen him fight twice and he seems like the real deal.
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Jacobs is an exciting young prospect. He has a great amateur background, good power and seems like a nice guy. He just needs more pro experience and rounds.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, I bet when Holyfield sees Valeuv in person he going to say Holy ****!!
Greg(Los Angeles)
Any updates on Allan Green?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Who?
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan, I'm really looking forward to your HOF vote blog...when might we expect that?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
It's on the to do list.
Dan (Chicago, IL)
You seem in a great mood today! No banishments? Are you a big Halloween guy?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Not really, but my wife stocked up on candy because we have a lot of kids in our neighborhood and had lots of them come by the house last year.
Tommy
There actually was an episode where Zach & Slater fought. Slater landed a flush right cross near the lockers in the hallway.
AC Slater
60/40 I'll whoop his a--
Jason (TX)
What if Roy beats Calzaghe. Then Roy fights Bernard to a draw (Close fight / no KO's)....(drum role) Jones vs W. Klitschko and Bernard vs V. Klitschko ... now thats a 24/7! Thats an event!
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Just relax.
jack, fort collins
man, this is some kinda chat. does it ever end?
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Eventually. Aren't you having fun?
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, has Winky actually smartened up by taking short $$$ to get back in the ring & get people talking about him again?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
I think Winky is a realist finally and knows that sitting out isn't going to get him a big fight. So he will come back, shake off the rust against a lesser opponent for chump change and move on to something bigger and hopefully put the past 18 months behind him.
Craig (Pittsburgh, PA)
Dano, next time you talk to Roy tell him the freaks wants to see him rap himself into the ring with his Can't be Touched song
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
I will.
Zim (Boston)
I think Jason's been snorting pixie stix again...
jack, fort collins
yes, and i'm getting nothing done.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
Good, that means you are tuned to ESPN.com. Keep it up.
corey from(WestWick)
The ppv looks ok but you have to agree the fight to watch tomorrow is Mijares vs Darchinyan
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Sure that is the most notable bout, but I am going to watch both.
Paint Drying
I got better numbers than Hopkins/Pavlik
Big Al East Los Angeles, CA
Danimal, who wins at 115 lbs, Mijares or Montiel? Does Pac ever fight at 135 again and in what weight do you thiink a third fight with Marquez happens?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
I would favor Mijares in a good fight. I think where Manny fights in the future will depend on how he does with Oscar but I would be sort of surprised if he went back to 135. I think he'd probably go to 140, where a third bout with Marquez could happen eventually (I hope).
Nate (Seattle)
D$$, Happy friday and Halloween. Speaking of favorite RJJ moments, how about the classic move he did against Hall, where he hit him, spun around Hall and hit him again before Hall even knew Roy was behind him? That is by far my favorite RJJ moment. Classic!
Gibbs (Dallas, TX)
DTM, a Pac-Man win over DLH sets up a huge fight against Pretty Boy, no? Can you see that happening? Money isn't that much bigger than Pac, is he?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
Condering F**** M********* is retired, so he says, it is what it is.
Vince (MA)
Is there a boxer you totally give up on but came back and proved you wrong?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
Barrera, hands down. I thought he was toally done after the Junior Jones fights. My bad.
Dan (Brooklyn, NY)
The good news for Pavlik is that it seems like NO ONE saw the fight.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say Vanda beats JCC Jr. In fact he will knock him out.
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
Based on the first fight, it's not an unreasonable prediction.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan any chance of a Forrest-Pavlik fight? I have seen Gary Shaw mention it before.
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Unlikely I think. I don't see that being a big money fight, it's dangerous for Pavlik and Top Rank and Shaw aren't exacly best buddies doing business togethger.
David (houston)
For some reason i see RJJ destroying Joe C. Im feeling good after i predicted what Vitali would do to Peter so i will ride that. Although i didnt predict B-Hop's stomping lol
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, do you think that Pavlik will be able to make 160 again w/no problem?
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
He'll make it, but it will be a struggle.
Brandon (Arlington, VA)
DTM - sorry i'm late to the party, work always seems to get in the way on Fridays. Regardless, how refreshing is it to get to see Roy Jones in a format such as 24/7? He's long been one of my favorite fighters and now I finally feel like I get to learn a little about him. Well done HBO.
Rufus (NY)
Is Bob Arum really a Harvard grad?
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
Yes. So is Lou DiBella.
Kevin (NYC)
Greatest Halloween related entrace of all time - Prince Naseem against McCullough, with him going through the graveyard? (or is it the ONLY Halloween related entrace ever!)
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
That was very memorable. I have a personal fond memory of that because that was the very first HBO fight I ever covered.
Angelo new jersy
what do you think about holt torres 3
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
I can't wait. Something wild will happen!
Tony (Miami, FL)
Erik Morales said he's talking to Golden Boy about fighting Marquez in May. Is that true?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
There has been a conversation from what GB has told me.
David (houston)
In holt v torres 2 wasnt that head but a huge factor in the knockout?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
It was but it was accidental.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
Say Roy went over to Europe and indeed did fight Michaelewski (or however you spell it) do you think he would've come back to the U.S with a victory?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
I think he would have blown out Michalczewski in a one-sided decision. Dariusz wouldn't have touched him.
Chad (Olympia)
Is it true that Mike Tyson graduated from Yale?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
No.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
DTM, what's your favorite fight that you've been ringside for?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Haven't we been over this about 1 million times? Corrales-Castillo 1.
Angelo(new jersey)
Dan,Who do you like in the Torres Holt rubber match
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
I am torn on it but I think Holt again.
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
But I may change my mind 50 times between now and the fight.
David (houston)
whats up with Linares? oh and also Valero?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
I wish I had something new to report on either of them. It's so depressing that Linares is going on a year with no fight.
Eli Manning
Dan, how excited are you that we get to crush the Cowboys on Sunday.
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Can't wait. Will be the highlight of my weekend.
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoy the fights this weekend and make sure to check out the new notebook and all the new stories from this week. I'll talk to you next week from NYC, where I will be covering Calzaghe-Jones. Peace.
