Chat with NASCAR Now's Boris Said
![]() |
Said, one of auto racing's top road racers, joined ESPN as a studio analyst for ESPN2's NASCAR Now in January 2007.
Said broke into NASCAR racing as a fill-in on road course events, and he quickly established a stellar reputation. He has given advice to more than 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne and Kevin Harvick, as well as team owners, most notably Jack Roush and Ray Evernham who've asked for help in training their young drivers in the art of road racing.
He has run a limited Sprint Cup schedule the past several seasons and has won poles at Daytona and Infineon Raceway.
Send your questions now and join Said in The Show on Monday at 1:30 p.m. ET!

justin (durham nc)
hey boris...great job on ur shows...with scott saying he has a team hes decided on just wqaiting on sponsers decisons now...where do u see scott going....41 15 01 ...ur thoughts...thanks again
Boris Said (1:26 PM)
I think he definitely has speed and deserves a ride. I would think he would end up with either the Pettys or Ganassi.
Colin North Carolina
WOW Jimmie Johnson is amazing and has the biggest margin ever between him and Carl Edwards, do you think Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, or Jeff Gordon has any chance to Catch him or is he totally got this in his bag?
Boris Said (1:27 PM)
It would take a miracle for those guys to catch him. He would have to have two really bad races for those guys to have a chance.
Washington D.C.
Boris: As the popularity of fighting Carl Edwards in NASCAR grows, have you ever thought about throwing a punch and getting in on the fun? How would you attack Carl and what fighting style do you think would be most effective?
Boris Said (1:28 PM)
I think it's probably about the same all through the years in the sport. It's an emotional sport. Sometimes it gets more heated than you'd lke to see. It happens in the other sports - football, hockey.
Frank (Colorado)
Z: How remarkably consistent has JJ been in his career? I heard he has never finished out of the top 10 in points in any season he's been in the Cup series. That true? If so, that's amazing!
Boris Said (1:29 PM)
You're actually wrong, he's actually never finished out of the top 5 in the Cup Series. I've known him since he was 5, so to me he's always been Jimmie. But he's becoming a legend. It's amazing.
Dale (Louisville)
definitly top 3 driver of all time?
Boris Said (1:30 PM)
I think that's a hard question to answer because it's hard to say. In this time period, he's one of the top 2 drivers. But it's hard to say if he's better than Petty or Dale Sr. But definitely in this time period he's one of the best.
tom* (parkville, md)
Mr. Said, is it frustrating to be classified as a road course driver? Does the specialist tag unfairly limit you?
Boris Said (1:31 PM)
No. I'm proud of my heritage. That's my experience. I've road raced almost my whole driving career. I would like to be known as an oval guy, but I don't have the experience yet. I've been called a lot worse over the course of my life.
dan san antonio texas:
do you think paul menard will be better at yates next year.
Boris Said (1:32 PM)
I would like to think so. I think they have a pretty good organization. He's gotten better every year, so, yeah, could be.
Ryan L (Toms River NJ)
How do you think Jimmie Johnson will do in the upcoming race?
Boris Said (1:33 PM)
I think he locks it up. but I think he'll go there to try and win the race. His idea of points racing is different than most people -- his idea is to get all of the points.
Dave (Denver)
A Junior question. He starts off strong and then falls off during the race. Yet Senior had it the other way around. Is it due to the communication during the race that is the problem for Junior?
Boris Said (1:34 PM)
they need to get a little better handle on their car. But keep in mind it's their first year with Hendrick. But I still think for their first year, they're still pretty successful year.
becka,va
will moving to gem make reed racing better
Boris Said (1:35 PM)
It's a little early to say. I personally think they pulled the plug on Patrick too early. I probably wouldn't have made that call if I were in their position. I would have stuck with my horse a little longer.
becka,va
who has been the hardest driver to teach the road courses to
Boris Said (1:36 PM)
I've taught 24 of the Cup drivers over the years. Basically all I do is show them the subtle differences. The big ones are learning to down shift and learning the different breaking technique from oval racing.
Mike (TRIE)
I'm a Said Head! How many races will you race next yaer???
Boris Said (1:37 PM)
Not yet. We're still working on sponsorships and getting things finalized for next year. It seems tougher with the state of the economy. But we're hoping for 10 races next year.
Mike (Foothill Ranch, CA)
Hello Boris, There was just a report stating NASCAR won't allow GEM to move from Dodge to Toyota. Why would NASCAR block that move? Any thoughts?
Boris Said (1:38 PM)
I don't know anything about that, but as far as I know, NASCAR can't tell you what kind of manufacturer to run. I could run a Ford one week, a Toyota the next and Chevy after that.
Mike (Foothill Ranch, CA)
Hello Boris, have you had any calls from teams asking you to drive full-time or part-time next year?
Boris Said (1:38 PM)
The team's looking good, we're ready to go next year. We're just looking for sponsors. We're going to be in the Daytona 500, that's the plan anyway.
TG(PA)
Do you see Rick hendrick replacing Tony Eury if next season shows no improvement in the 88 team. Would Junior work with someone else if Rick told him to?
Boris Said (1:39 PM)
I don't think Rick would replace him. I don't see any need. Yeah, he's made some mistakes, but drivers make mistakes, crew members make mistakes. You just learn from them. Last year Junior wasn't in the race and this year he's been competing. I think it was a successful first year.
sam (boston)
Do you think the qualifying rain outs secretly make the go or go home drivers happy that they can leave the track early?
Boris Said (1:41 PM)
They're disappointed beyond belief. When I get rained out every year in Watkins Glen every year, you are sick to your stomach. When you can't compete due to Mother Nature, it's just depressing.
Harley Coe, Arlington VA
What do you do on race days when you're not behind the wheel or commentating? Want to come over to my place?
Boris Said (1:41 PM)
Sure. Usually I'm playing with my four year old, if I'm home that weekend.
Chad (Cascade,MD)
Is it offical jeff gets no win this year?
Boris Said (1:42 PM)
I don't think so. I still think Phoenix could be his weekend. I think he's too good to not win a race in a year. I'd be surprised if he doesn't.
Mel (Houston)
Do you think Cup drivers should be allowed to run full seasons in the Nationwide series?
Boris Said (1:42 PM)
Yes. I don't think it should matter who should race. If I were a Nationwide guy, I would want to prove I could race against the best guys.
Boris Said (1:43 PM)
Thanks for chatting!
