Chat with Mark Garrow
![]() |
Garrow began reporting on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 1984 and has been doing a daily nationally-syndicated NASCAR news radio show currently called PRN's Garage Pass since 1987. Garrow is currently the co-anchor for the Performance Racing Network (PRN) national radio broadcasts of Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races. The Vermont native was voted the National Motorsports Press Association's Barney Hall award winner in 2002, the Radio Broadcaster of the Year in 2006 and has collected over 30 NMPA awards. While the bulk of his work has been on radio, Garrow has been on television for ESPN, TNT, TNN and Fox.
Along with being a Jayski.com correspondent, Mark Garrow will also serve this year as one of ESPN's Fantasy Racing experts and write for ESPN.com. In addition, he'll be producing seven podcasts each week throughout the season.
Send in your questions now and check back at 1 p.m. ET Monday to chat with Mark!
Mark Garrow (1:11 PM)
Hey everybody..sorry for being late...plane just got on the ground in Charlotte...delayed for lots of clouds...have circling overhead..in the terminal finally and online to get this partaayyyy started!
Branden (Pittsburgh,PA)
Hi Mark, always enjoy the chats. My question is, why does NASCAR not step up and park the 38 for one week. That was one of the most blatant take outs I have seen in quite awhile, yet they are just giving him a slap on the wrist. What was your take on this incident?
Mark Garrow (1:15 PM)
I think David Gilliland is one of the nicest guys in the garage but that was plain vicious..You don't hook a guy's right rear quarter panel because you put him in the wall head on or driver's side first, which is what happened to Montoya...Then to say it was an accident was insulting...blatant...On top of that, it cost Ganassi at 150,000 dollar car....and it probably cost Doug Yates a car at some point because you know Montoya is going to even up that score..He almost has to or he's going to run over by everybody...Gilliland's had an up and mostly down year and I think he lost his head momentarily...He was definitely blocking Montoya and deserved a little bump to say "hey I'm here"...but then to give a guy the death sentence for what was at worst jaywalking..ridiculous.
Dave (Memphis)
Can you confirm that Martin will be in the 8 car for Phoenix? One last allocation for him, and this would be a good spot.
Mark Garrow (1:16 PM)
Yes Dave, Mark will be in the car at Phoenix..It will be his final race for DEI and his final race of the year. There had been some talk he would run the last race in the 5 car for Rick Hendrick to get a jump on next year, but when I asked Mark about it he said he would be home on his couch watching on TV.
becka,va
how many points is it if a driver is 43 and then passes a couple of cars
Mark Garrow (1:18 PM)
If a driver is 43rd and passes two drivers that is a pick-up of six points, three per position...that is unless one of the guys in front of him has a led a lap..then you have to figure in the lap leader bonus of 5 points...hope that helps..
Ed, Hartford Ct
What did Juan Montoya say about being wrecked at such a high speed? I haven't seen anything.
Mark Garrow (1:18 PM)
Ed, he wasn't very happy..Called Gilliland an idiot and said he had no talent..
kevin (charlotte)
hey mark what do think of the AI trade for billiups ? Does this make pistons any better than they are now ?
Mark Garrow (1:19 PM)
Kevin...got me on that one...I'm no NBA expert...but maybe Pistons need a little shake-up and Iverson can certainly provide that..
Wesley (CT)
I dont think that the cowboys are going to make it to the playoffs, T.O. is not catching like he was before, its probly bacause he is not as aggresive. yall tell me what you guys think.
Mark Garrow (1:21 PM)
I'm a Cowboys fan and I think the least of their problems right now is T.O...they've got a number of other issues and as a team certainly not playing up to potential..
Brett (Milford, CT)
Why is Nascar on TV?? It really isn't a sport at all!!!! I would much rather watch paint dry
Mark Garrow (1:23 PM)
Whew...back to NASCAR...I hope faked the NFL and NBA deal good enough..lol...If you're talking abourt watching the Texas race, I can almost understand your comment...but end had some drama and it is an acquired taste..Before you down NASCAR too much, you really need to attend a race and get a feel for what it's like live..the smell..the speed..and then you can make a better judgement about the sport or the broadcasts...
Gene (Boston,MA)
For JJ to win his 3rd Cup what is the best finish he needs for the next two weeks?
Mark Garrow (1:23 PM)
Gene, he needs to average a seventh place finish to ice even if Edwards wins and leads the most laps at Phoenix and Homestead like he did at Texas.
RAY GORDON reid FORTWORTH TX 76129
QUESTION TO NASCAR GURU MARK GARROW AT 1.2O PM HI GURU WHO is IT GONNA BE SUNDAY AT PHOENIX
Mark Garrow (1:24 PM)
I think it's going to be Jimmie Johnson, putting the heat back on Mr. Edwards..my dark-horse is Mark Martin, who could have won the spring race.
Mark Garrow (1:24 PM)

sean (wv)
what ever happened to ricky craven, he always did well, did people just get tired of him wrecking too much?
Mark Garrow (1:25 PM)
For whatever reason, Ricky's phone stopped ringing..but he's doing some broadcasting from time to time on ESPN NASCAR Now..He's also an astute investor and spends time with that..and has a snowmobile dealership up in his homestate of Maine...Probably doing a lot of other things I don't really know about too.
becky,va
will reed do better at gem then he is at gansaisi
Mark Garrow (1:26 PM)
Becky I know you're a big Reed fan..He should and Allmendinger is setting the bar high because he's showing 10 team isn't as bad as its finished all season long when Patrick Carpentier drove the car.
Nate (Mn)
I love nascar!!! Go JJ 3 straight titles baby!!
Mark Garrow (1:27 PM)
Nate, he's in the driver's seat...but he's got to be a little nervous about what happened at Texas..I think he's still going to do it, but it might be tougher than expected the final two races.
Scott (Orlando)
How many more years do you think Jeff Gordon races, seems like other things goin on in his life are distracting him?
Mark Garrow (1:29 PM)
I think Jeff is going to re-evaluate at the end of the 2010 season...I don't think you'll find him driving even into his mid-40's on a full-time basis like a lot of guys have been doing these days..but I also don't see him saying that's it and retiring, walking away cold turkey...By the way, personally I'm glad he's got some distractions like a new baby...just because these guys are superstarts and celebrities shouldn't preclude them from having a real life..He's done just about everything he can do in racing..nothing left to prove..
Dave (Memphis)
McMurray someone to have for the last 2? Seems to be coming on when many teams are looking to next year.
Mark Garrow (1:30 PM)
I can see him being really good at Homestead..but not quite sure about Phoenix...Certainly a guy to keep your eye on in practice and qualifying..He's done a nice job on the last three 1.5-mile tracks..Charlotte, Atlanta and Texas..
Jake (VA Beach)
What was the main reason behind Jeff Gordon not being able to get over the hump into top contention this year?
Mark Garrow (1:32 PM)
I just don't think on the bigger tracks he was comfortable inside the car and because of that he never had the speed to really challenge for a bunch of wins..Starting to get there though...led 57 laps at Charlotte and 15 at Texas so they are moving in the right direction..You have to drive these new cars loose and that's not a feeling Jeff has ever really liked.
Branden (Pittsburgh,PA)
Have you heard any garage gossip about some possible candidates for the 41 car? I would like to see either Allmendinger or Scott Riggs in the car.
Mark Garrow (1:33 PM)
I'm hearing Riggs had the inside track because Ganassi didn't really like Allmendinger for some reason..but that deal might have cooled because Riggs said this weekend he's still looking..
Felipe (Dallas)
Hey Mark, when will Montoya finally get a break and win his first oval and do you see Ganassi turning things around? Also, will Ganassi merge first or Montoya goes to another team first??
Mark Garrow (1:34 PM)
Montoya has been really fast the last two weeks and doesn't have anything to show for it...still aways from winning on an oval, but closing in on top-five material...Ganassi will merge first I'm guessing before Montoya jumps ship.
TED (ohio)
WHOS RYAN NEWMANS 2nd SPONSER GOING TO BE?
Mark Garrow (1:35 PM)
I haven't heard yet and we're still waiting to hear who is crew chief is going to be..I think the rumors are true that Tony Gibson is leaving DEI and the 8 car to take care of that job for Ryan.
Branden (Pittsburgh,PA)
Do you think Gibbs is making a mistake putting Logano in the 20 so soon. His runs this year in Sprint Cup have not impressed me, yesterday he wasn't even remotely competitive.
Mark Garrow (1:36 PM)
Branden, they have to be concerned that's for sure..I think it might be too much too fast..but they probably have gone too far down the road to change anything...There have been rumors though they had been sending out feelers to see if a Kurt Busch or Martin Truex, Jr. might be available..
Mark Garrow (1:37 PM)
Thanks everyone...take care and don't forget Fantasy chat this Wednesday at 4:00. Have a great day!
