Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:00 PM)
Good afternoon everyone! Happy to step in for Erik today, and ready to tackle your fantasy football questions ... let's get started!
Stephen (Baton Rouge, LA)
Mewelde Moore or Jamaal Charles this week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:00 PM)
Well, it's Moore now; Willie Parker is out for Week 10. The Colts represents a fantastic matchup for Moore. Plus, he's simply put more talented than Charles.
Scott in the town (VA)
Been waiting all day for this chat!! MVP QB question: Which is a better start Matt Ryan vs NO or Jake vs Oak?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:01 PM)
For as much as I like the Ryan matchup, I can't use him over Jake Delhomme. It's close, but I need the vet here.
Leo(Toronto Canada)
Who do I start this week need two of these def. Carolina,Tennesse and Arizona
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:02 PM)
Absolutely no question it's Carolina and Tennessee, because the offenses they are facing are loaded with questions.
Brent (Los Angeles)
Good afternoon Tristan. With news that Torain is out for the year. Who becomes Denver's Rb? Young? Hillis?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:03 PM)
Well, Brent, that entire backfield is a mess. Michael Pittman, Andre Hall and now Ryan Torain are out for the season. Selvin Young is doubtful for next week. I really think his is a week-to-week, not day-to-day, injury. So it's apparently Peyton Hillis for now. But we'll see some P.J. Pope, too. And I think Denver might dip into that free-agent pool. Better question: Do Denver's running backs matter anymore? (I say no, not really.)
Keaton (Sioux City, IA)
Hey Tristan, nice to see you in the chat! I need flex help: Justin Fargas, Green-Ellis, or Matt Jones? Thanks!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:05 PM)
Glad to be here, Keaton, thanks! I've heard absolutely nothing to suggest Matt Jones' suspension will begin this Sunday. And frankly, I think we would have by now if he was going to be out. So it's Jones, because that's a soft, soft matchup.
Drew (NJ)
Rosenfels or Flacco for this week? is Flacco a viable matchup QB now?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:06 PM)
Fair answer is that it depends on your scoring system. It's Sage Rosenfels; I admire that he's a risk-taker, and can amass impressive numbers. Problem is, he'll commit turnovers in that game. Bottom line. If your league penalizes that harshly -- think more so than ESPN standard -- Flacco makes a case. Most spots, it's Sage.
Kim Bauer (LA)
My dad just traded Mewelde Moore and Eddie Royal for Steve Slaton. Did he just get a steal of a deal?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:07 PM)
There isn't a chance in you-know-where that I'd bet against your dad. The dude can make miracles happen. That a fair enough answer?
Mike (LA)
Howdy Tristan. Is now a good time to sell-high on Portis? His playoff schedule looks tough. For a team that is weak at WR, would you do a Portis/Slaton for LT/Boldin deal?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:08 PM)
Clinton Portis' schedule apparently doesn't bother me as much it does you, and part of it is that he's far too talented for me to fret about such things. That said, I'd call that a smart deal in your shoes. For one, Tomlinson does have quite a nice remaining schedule. For another, you can't do much better than Anquan Boldin if you're aiming to upgrade your receiver corps.
Please Help with Work Project!
Tristan, I'm doing research for work and trying to find out when the busiest day is for people to update their fantasy rosters. Any idea?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:09 PM)
No idea the actual numbers, but from my experience, I'm always checking on Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday for waiver-wire claims, and setting my rosters either Saturday night or early Sunday. Hope that helps.
Jeff (washington, DC)
McAllister or Charles this weekend? This is a tough decision
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:11 PM)
Not for me. It's Deuce McAllister. I'll dig you up the numbers and post 'em for you in a sec, they'll make you feel pretty confident.
Bob (DC)
Happy Friday Tristan! With an 8-1 team, I'm looking towards the playoffs and have offered the Peyton owner a swap for Warner. Warner's injury history scares me and Peyton's playoff schedule is juicy. Good idea?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:11 PM)
Can't go wrong with either quarterback, I'd say. You're right on the health risk, but is there really much difference here? I'd call it safety versus risk/reward. Pretty fair.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:12 PM)
Re: McAllister ... In nine career starts against the Falcons, he has averaged 118.6 scrimmage yards with 10 total touchdowns.
DJ (Sac)
Flex Position help... Mechatron or M Moore This week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:13 PM)
"Mechatron"? What is that, the "Mecha Godzilla" version of Calvin Johnson? With news Moore will be starting, I'm going running back here. Just the way I usually decide such things if the matchup is great, and it is.
The Late President Palmer
Drop Philly D/ST for Miami this weekend (also have Giants)? Rice or Slaton this week?? Thanks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:14 PM)
Ah, I miss President Palmer. Maybe Jobu can bring him back? Miami D is a sleeper for me, and I worry about both defenses in the annual Giants-Eagles affair in Philly. Those are hard-fought contests. Risk involved. Miami's matchup is quite a nice one. At running back, I'd stick with Steve Slaton. We know for sure he'll start, and even if he struggles against Baltimore's front, he catches enough passes to make it up.
Ryan (NH)
Do you think picking up Cadillac Williams now would be wise before all the hoopla begins with him alah Ryan Torain?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:15 PM)
I didn't anticipate any Torain-like hoopla with Cadillac Williams. Best answer I can give you. Nor should there have been any.
Joe (NJ)
What are your thoughts on BenJarvis heading into the weekend?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:16 PM)
Good situational back, but at best he's a flex option. Think something like what Le'Ron McClain generally shapes up as. And the only way I even give him the go-ahead in the flex is if both Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan are officially ruled out, though I expect they will.
Al (Memphis)
Tristan, are you in on the Hightower love-fest? You like him over Tom Jones or DeAngelo Williams the rest of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:18 PM)
Yes, though perhaps not up to the levels that some of my colleagues are. I'd call him in that borderline No. 2/flex category, which means he ranks in the No. 20 range or so at his position. I do like the kid a lot -- go back and check some of the things I've said about him since the preseason -- and that's a tough call. Right now, probably yes, barely, but somehow the gut keeps bringing me back to DeAngelo. He's got some nice matchups remaining. Yup, Williams by a nose.
Mothra
(Dubbed English voice) MWAAAAAAAAH. is Big Ben gonna start?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:19 PM)
Ha! Awesome. Nothing like trying to make sounds into typewritten words. Love it. Anyway, Ben Roethlisberger reportedly practiced today; I can't really go check the specifics too easily during the chat, but if that's true, there's a pretty good chance he's going to play. Two days ago I'd have told you no, but it's looking a lot more likely now that he will.
William Texas
Is Colston ever gonna produce?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:20 PM)
I've said in a few spots already this week that I love him as a must-start for Week 10.
Bryce (Charleston, SC)
Tristan H. Cockcroft, If I've got a guy who will take Romo and Jamal Lewis for Brees, you do that in a heartbeat, right?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:21 PM)
Not necessarily "in a heartbeat," but yes, I'd say Drew Brees is the best player in that deal, and that's enough for me. (Of course, I don't know your remaining running back situation, so just check that first to ensure you're OK.)
Lion-O (Thundara)
Sword of Omens...give me sight beyond sight. Which RB would be the most fair to trade for Kurt Warner out of Slaton, Addai, Westbrook, Hightower, Deuce, BenJarvis?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:23 PM)
Thundercats references? Jeez, now I feel old, because I do remember that show, quite well. (Not a fan, got repetitive that the bad guys were just so stupid.) Anyway, fair trade? Well, the fairest these days might actually have to be Brian Westbrook, but I'd never do that. He's a bit too much. A deal you might be able to swing? Maybe Joseph Addai, Perhaps Steve Slaton. I could see you maybe needing to throw in something to tempt the other team. Anything's worth trying, I'd say. But start with those two.
Jeremy (Boston)
Are you jealous that you haven't appeared on a soap opera yet? Pennington or Ryan? Holmes or Avery?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:25 PM)
What's interesting is that in my lifetime I've probably watched, oh, maybe 45 total minutes of soaps, and I can guarantee you that 95 percent or more of that came when I was a really young kid and the babysitter was watching. And I totally didn't get 'em. Still don't, but I saw the spot. Had a nice little chuckle. Anyway, to the question: It's Chad Pennington. I like both, but that matchup is tremendous. And it's Donnie Avery for me. I don't like Holmes' matchup one bit.
I AM GETTING CARPEL TUNNEL (b-more)
T Dawg I really need some advice on this one. Should I bench Slaton or Marshawn in order to get Mewelde Moore into my lineup?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:26 PM)
Join the club. Even that little arm rest thing they designed for keyboards doesn't help me. I'd sit Steve Slaton. The truth is I do not like that matchup, I just said earlier it's not horrendous. But Moore's potential is a lot greater, that I can say for sure.
Miah, Memphis
Trade theory question. Would you ever trade a potential top WR for a TE? I have been offered Owen Daniels for Braylon Edwards. I have Randy Moss, Roddy White, and Coles already and need a TE.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:27 PM)
I would never make that trade, and that's even if it was a PPR league. Just a rip-off deal, I think. Frankly, considering how awful the entire tight end pool has been this season, I'd be a-OK picking a brand-new, fresh matchup every single week if I had to. And I do that in a very important league of mine, every week. And I'm very much in the running for the title in that league. (Knock on wood, no kibosh please.)
Skeletor
We get it, I'm a skeleton. real original name. Make the case for sitting Mason and starting Ginn. Jr.... or don't
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:28 PM)
HAHAHAHAHA! And no, I won't make that case. Derrick Mason is a great play.
That Guy getting Carpel Tunnel Lied!
Tristan, big week playing the top dawg in the league. Mason or Lee Evans? Chris Johnson or Moore (good matchup)?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:30 PM)
I'm going to go a little against the grain here matchups-wise. Lee Evans turns his miserable track record around against the Pats. Asante Samuel is gone, and I think that helps him with the man-on-man matchups; count on mismatches on the Pats' part. And Chris Johnson. Too talented to sit.
Jack Bauer HIMSELF!!!!
The Gus Bus or Trent Edwards this week?? Thanks Tristan. GET TO WORK KIM!!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:31 PM)
Gus Frerotte. I know what I just said about Lee Evans, I like him. I just don't like his quarterback. You know, the receiver can have a great game and yet the quarterback can have a poor one (ever hear of turnovers?).
Jack (Richmond Hill)
Fantasy Hockey Q...(wait for laugh)...ok really, Better flex option: Ellis-Green, De.Jackson, L.Washington or Fargas.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:32 PM)
Hey! And I just put all that work into my Forecaster running today. Don't bust on hockey, it's a great sport, especially live. DeSean Jackson, no doubt.
Sarah Palin (gutter)
Need one of these 3 por favor (You are cute!) J. Morgan at Cards (14td's given up in air), Holt at Jets (is he really back?), R. Wayne at Pitt (LOUSY matchup....thanks!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:33 PM)
Yikes. By the way, Sarah, I think Manny Legace has a bone to pick with you. No way I sit Reggie Wayne. No way. I have way too much respect for the guy to fret over his matchups.
Digital Clock (your TV)
Beep boop. Beep boop. If I have Warner do I dare risk trading Romo for help at WR? Having him as my only QB is scary, but even worse is the prospect of starting Holt or Holmes as my WR2 come playoff time. If I do pull the trigger, would Romo for Wayne be a fair trade?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:34 PM)
Love that sound. And yes, seems fair enough, accounting for Tony Romo's off week and then the injury risk (there's at least a slim, slim shot of re-injury).
Darren Sproles
Any chance we open up a big lead, and I get a bunch of carries in the second half?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:35 PM)
I don't play for such things. Period. And simply put, the Chargers' defense plays dead so often that they regularly engage their opponents in high-scoring affairs. Kansas City is a trap opponent. Trust me. This won't be a laugher-style blowout.
John (NYC)
I need to know by today!! I can get Jonathan Stewart and either Braylon or Colston for Kurt Warner. Peyton Manning is my backup. Thoughts??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:36 PM)
Doesn't excite me, especially since Jonathan Stewart isn't shaping up as a Chris Johnson-like primary back. Looks like DeAngelo Williams' gig first and foremost to me. I'd look for better.
Joe, Indy
Who would you sit this week: Holmes, Coles, Camarillo or Gonzolas(IND)?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:36 PM)
Anthony Gonzalez.
Dan - San Jose
I surely did enjoy having Cutler and Winslow on my squad last night. Who should I now sit in favor of Mewelde Moore - Addai or Grant? I'm leaning toward sitting Joseph.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:38 PM)
I loved having Eddie Royal. Nice game for fantasy (sorry, Braylon Edwards owners). I don't like either matchup there. But I'd go Ryan Grant (as the starter over Joseph Addai). At least there's the chance the Vikings give up a score; they tend to do that.
Adam, Slc
What do you think about M. Ryan the rest of the way? What about Garrard?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:39 PM)
Matchups guys, and nothing more. I'd probably call David Garrard a little safer, but there's no way I ride either one every single week.
Tony Almeida (DC)
Am I good or bad? Speaking of good or bad, Tristan, I keep getting varied answers on this one, SD Defense vs. KC (Is Pigpen really that great?) or Philly vs. NYG (Hoping for the bad Eli). With points lost for points scored against and Rivera in charge of SD D, who would you start?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:41 PM)
Well, Tony, I'm told you're bad, but the writers have a heck of a lot of explaining to do. I just don't buy that plot twist. Gonna take some hard work. As for the defenses, don't like either. Forced to choose, I go talent over matchup. It's the Eagles. Hey, at least I can defend 'em in that the Giants have had their share of trouble in games in Philly in recent seasons.
Uncle Leo (Queens, NY)
Really tough decision here: Please help an old man pick(3) 1 WR, 1RB and 1RB or WR from...Grant, Addai, Charles ,Rice, Cotchery and Driver?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:42 PM)
Stop stealing batteries, Leo! I'd probably again go Ryan Grant, for the reasons stated above, and Jerricho Cotchery as your receiver, and then for flex, hmmm ... Ray Rice, play for the upside.
The mountain lion that stalked Kim Bauer (L.A.)
Looking forward to the playoffs in Weeks 13,14,15, which defenses have the best plays those weeks?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:44 PM)
Oh, mountain lion, how you terrified me so. (Couldn't be more sarcastic.) I have to browse a schedule quickly to do this, and the first things that pop out to me are that the Steelers, Pats and Dolphins have pretty good matchups sprinkled in there. Again, I had to scroll through very quickly.
tom (Hackensack)
real simple: jacobs gets benched for mewelde?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:45 PM)
Nope. No getting cute.
Neglected Fantasy Owner
Please... I'm begging you... plax or bowe this week? Throw a guy a bone here...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:45 PM)
Plaxico.
tristan cockcroft
was at bal. week 14. They are probably a free agent
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:46 PM)
I like Washington at Cincy the very next week, too. Thanks, me!
The Wolf
Usually I solve problems but right now I got a problem of my own. Sage or Pigpen?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:47 PM)
The Wolf? First thing I think of is I actually had a college roommate who went by the name "Wolf." True story. I know, it's weird. Sage Rosenfels for me. Both bad matchups, but he's healthier.
Steve (Milwaukee)
You trust Burress?! He's been a huge bust lately and he's facing a tough D!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:47 PM)
No, but that was not the question.
what the
its thigpen.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:48 PM)
Ha! I actually thought that was a rip on "Big Ben." Still Sage Rosenfels.
milton nj
is this being too cute? jacobs benched for d.williams(car)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:49 PM)
No, but allow me to point out that Jonathan Stewart has been missing practices this week and doesn't look like any guarantee to play. And if he sits, DeAngelo Williams' matchup becomes an absolute must-play.
Puddy (Devils!)
Make some sense of the Ravens RB situation for...can I safely start Rice or will McGahee actually play for once?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:50 PM)
Hey Puddy, I still use your "El Diablos" for my fantasy hockey team names ... great episode. That backfield is a mess, I admit it. But I'd have a hard time seeing Ray Rice not being the leading guy in terms of carries. Both were listed on the injury report as probable, and when McGahee is on there, that troubles me quite a bit more than it does Rice.
Tim (NYC)
You: "Sage Rosenfels for me. Both bad matchups, but he's healthier." Me: Isn't Thigpen vs. the 31st ranked pass defense a pretty good matchup, considering KC's ground game also tore it up last week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:52 PM)
Again, I thought that was "Big Ben," not "Thig-Pen," when it was answered. And Thigpen is actually not a total discard! I just see more in Rosenfels' past to believe he can rack up the yards and scores against Baltimore. Of course, he'll rack up the INTs, too. So be prepared for that.
Crappy Question Asker
Please kind sir, answer my crappy question--Pitt is fierce vs the run and pass, so--Addai or Harrison? Also, which bye week D- Falcons, Rams, Texans, Chiefs, Hawks, Raiders?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:54 PM)
Joseph Addai. More touches, period. As for the defenses, ugggghhhhhhhhh. Seriously, I'd see if maybe I could swing a trade, because if that's all there is, surely someone has multiple defenses rostered. Must I choose? Houston. I guess. Please don't anyone else take that as an "Oh boy, Texans defense, let's get 'em!"
Dan - San Jose
Yeah, The Wolf. Pulp Fiction? Harvey Keitel? Remember? Anyway...Derek Ward or Ryan Grant?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:54 PM)
Sure I remember. But when your roommate calls himself "the" Wolf, well, hard for that not to come to mind, too. Weird how the mind works. OK, well, it works certainly well enough that it's Grant for your start.
not quite giving up...
Hi TC. Help me out with my bye week replacement for Cooley: Scaife, LJ Smith, or Keller. Thanks!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:55 PM)
Well, I picked up Bo Scaife as a bye-week replacement in one of my leagues, so...
Green Man
Since we aren't sure if you trust Plax, Plax or Matt Jones (if he starts)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:56 PM)
OK, how about this: Plaxico Burress is a low-level No. 2 fantasy receiver for this week. That help describe it? I'd still play him.
D-Fence (Utah)
Carolina or Pittsburgh D this week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:57 PM)
Carolina's. You heard that right, there's a defense I like better than Pittsburgh's (for Week 10).
Charleston SC
M.Moore or Deuce? Help a brother out.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:58 PM)
I'll actually go Mewelde Moore there! Very close. Both like fringe No. 1/No. 2 starters. Probably closer to high-end No. 2s.
Cindy (NYC)
TRADE QUESTION: I currently play the matchups and start either Hightower or Lendale at RB2 (no flex), but can trade both of them for Turner. Pull the trigger?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:58 PM)
Roster implications. That's the bottom line. You can't use those guys and can get the best player in the deal -- Michael Turner -- I say you do it.
Jason (Omaha)
J Stewart, Breaston, or BGE for last flex spot? Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:59 PM)
Looks like it has to be BenJarvus Green-Ellis for you.
Crappier Question Akser:
buzzer beater: Pick one: slaton, M Moore, Grant. Pick one: Driver or curtis; thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:59 PM)
Mewelde Moore and Donald Driver. And can any question really be "crappy"?
Running out of time...
Which deal do you like better...trade Hightower to get Randy Moss OR trade S-Jax to get Jennings? Thanks, Tristan!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:00 PM)
That's actually a pretty close call now, with Steven Jackson's status totally up in the air, not only for Week 10, but Week 11, too. Right now, I think I'd have to shop him off of the two.
dave- from mothra and skeletor fame
you should probably get me to write for you. It'll get us both more chicks. J stewart or Ryan grant?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:01 PM)
I'm married, though. Ryan Grant.
BUZZER BEATER!
Plax or T Gonzalez?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:02 PM)
I actually like Tony Gonzalez's matchup an awful lot this week, and he has an exceptional recent track record against the Chargers.
Rees (Utah)
J. Charles or Reggie Wayne for a flex play (Evans and Colston starting at WR)?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:02 PM)
Again, Wayne. Tons of respect.
people
i now see why you dont do chats
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:03 PM)
Hey, second chat of the week for me!
rd
Is Hightower startable over R. Moss at a flex spot this week? Also, I start L. Fitz at a WR spot so should that sway my decision?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:03 PM)
Sure. Arizona's matchups are quite favorable; I wouldn't be worried about doubling up.
Lee (temp)
Forte is facing the Titans, so would Mewelde be a better play?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:04 PM)
Barely. And much of my reasoning is that Rex Grossman's starting status detracts from Matt Forte's appeal.
Dave
Married? like arizona was married to edge?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:04 PM)
I trashed Edgerrin James in the preseason. I don't know how that relates, but it's what I thought of first.
Preston (Nashville)
What do you make of Thomas Jones the rest of the year? He's got good matchups but will his old legs and senile pass-happy QB hurt him?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:05 PM)
Sell-high candidate. I'll repeat those three words (or two with a hyphen) if you would like?
Alan
Slaton vs Bal, or Forte vs Tenn... and yes you have to choose
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:05 PM)
Matt Forte then.
Fred (East Lansing)
Is D. Avery's time as fantasy relevant at an end?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:05 PM)
No, he rebounds with, say, borderline No. 2/3 fantasy receiver value this week. A tad boom-or-bust overall, I admit. But I like him.
lisa (west haven ct)
T-H-C...i need one out of these 3. Fargas, Faulk, J. Charles
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:06 PM)
I'll pick Jamaal Charles.
Buzzer beater!
Am I crazy to start Ray Rice over Steve Slaton?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:07 PM)
Crazy? No. Would I do it? Tough call, I'd check that Baltimore backfield picture before the kickoff. Right now, I'd say Slaton's safer.
Rod (KC)
Is Josh Morgan and Sidney Rice's time as fantasy relevant beginning?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:07 PM)
I still admire Bernard Berrian a heck of a lot more in that Minny passing game. And if you've been following my stuff all season, you know I'm huge on Josh Morgan. Like that guy as a late-season sleeper.
Mark (Pittsburgh)
At WR Cotchery or VJax (very close in all rankings)? At RB Slaton or take a shot on Rice?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:08 PM)
I'll go Jerricho Cotchery because I think the Chargers will pound the ball on the ground. Answered part two above.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:09 PM)
OK, folks, have to get going, but best of luck to you in Week 10! Thank you for all of your questions, it's been a fun time today and sorry if I could not tackle yours. Until next time, take care!
