Matthew will be here soon, everyone!
Matthew Barnaby (4:13 PM)
Thanks for the questions. I'll get to as many as I can today.
Eric (Detroit, MI)
Which is the most exciting team for you to watch right now? To me it seems like Buffalo is the most fun because their back to their up tempo game of a few years ago.
Matthew Barnaby (4:14 PM)
I agree. I live in Buffalo. I get to see them play live a lot. They have a lot of good young forwards and they forecheck very hard, causing a lot of turnovers.
I was wondering what your take was on last Saturday's contest between the Stars and Bruins? What did you think of the antics of Steve Ott and Sean Avery? I feel like if Ott is going to play that style he needs to be willing to drop his gloves and back it up.
Matthew Barnaby (4:15 PM)
I played with Otter, and he is willing to drop the gloves. There was a lot of things going on with fans and players on the Stars' bench and things got out of control on the ice. I think right now Dallas is very frustrated and it's come to a boiling point.
Tom (Buffalo, NY)
Hey Matt, big fan, are you shocked at all with the goals Thomas Vanek is putting in? He is hammering them home like a maniac
Matthew Barnaby (4:16 PM)
He's scored at every level, but I'm certainly surprised at the pace he's on. He got off to such a slow start last year, but was one of the hottest players in the second half. On top of it, he's playing great defense and been a true leader on the ice.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Can the Devils still stay competetive without Marty Brodeur in net? If so, who will have to step up?
Matthew Barnaby (4:17 PM)
I don't think they'll be able to compete without having Marty in net. If they are going to contend, they will need to stay healthy and get a lot more scoring than they are up front.
Adam (Hanson, MA)
Thoughts on the Bruins so far? Any chance they can get Shanahan?
Matthew Barnaby (4:18 PM)
Only Shanahan can decide that. He really wants to keep his family close to New York, so there is a chance. Boston has played very well defensively and Tim Thomas has been a true star.
Joe (Grand Rapids, MN)
Which team in the NHL currently has the most "team toughness" in your opinion and is team toughness still as important in today's pro skating, pro scoring game?
Matthew Barnaby (4:19 PM)
Team toughness is still very important, and I think it's more important than just having one tough guy. The team that is the toughest all around, to me, would be the Detroit Red Wings. Not that they fight, but in any situation, they seem to find a way through it.
The blackhawks have been playing great lately and they have a real home ice advantage for the first time in a while. How far do you think they can go this year?
Matthew Barnaby (4:20 PM)
I think the first thing for the Blackhawks is to make the playoffs. That's their first goal. Once they accomplish that, every step will be harder and harder. With the skill, the youth, and the good coaching they have, they could go pretty far.

Who do you see as a darkhorse in the west? Do you honestly believe phoenix can make a run?
Matthew Barnaby (4:21 PM)
No, I don't believe Phoenix can make a run yet. They are much better than they were a year ago, but I think defensively, they still have some work to do. As for a dark horse, my pick at the start of the year was the Calgary Flames, and I'm sticking with them.
Ben, McKinney, TX
What is going on with Marty Turco and Dallas' goaltending? Do you think they need to make a trade and get a veteran backup to push Marty?
Matthew Barnaby (4:22 PM)
I think Marty is a world-class goalie and will solve his problems of late very quickly. He's a competitive guy and a hard worker, and this is hurting him more than anyone out there.
Luke (Pittsburgh PA.)
What do you think are the chances of the Penguins making a deal for Ilya Kovalchuk?
Matthew Barnaby (4:24 PM)
I think there are a lot of teams that are trying to get their hands on Kovalchuck. He would be a great fit for the Pens. I would hope they would try to sign him to a long-term deal if they were to trade for him, as they saw Marian Hossa leave.
Mike Rochester, NY
Hi Matt. Do you see a reason why Lindy Ruff doesn't dress as physical or as tough a lineup every game? In the 90s Buffalo was a tough place to play and they had the attention and respect of the league and were quite successful during that time period.
Matthew Barnaby (4:25 PM)
The game has changed and Lindy judges his lineup by what is in the other team's lineup. He has so many options up front and has done a great job for a number of years, making smart decisions.
It appears Gaborik is going to be traded this year. Which team would be the best fit for him?
Matthew Barnaby (4:26 PM)
I think at some point, someone is going to overpay for Gaborik. He's a great player, but injuries have hindered him throughout his career. The hot rumor is Montreal, which would have to clear up cap space.
Al (Pine Grove PA)
How are you doing this, Barnaby? Everyone knows you can't read.
Matthew Barnaby (4:27 PM)
I have someone read me the questions, type the answers, and sometimes answer the questions. Ha ha.
There is a report saying Mats Sundin wants to play in a warmer climate and a less media market. Phoenix has the salary cap space would it be a good fit?
Matthew Barnaby (4:28 PM)
I don't think so, no. I don't think Phoenix is a good fit for Sundin, as he would like to stay as close to the East Coast as possible. He also would like to compete for a Stanley Cup, therefore eliminating Phoenix.
Troy (Ann Arbor, MI)
Matt, Hossa is quickly finding his way on this Wings team and producing big time. In fact, so much so that the Wings have no chance at a Cup without him. Your thoughts?
Matthew Barnaby (4:29 PM)
Well, they won the Cup last year without him, and the rich got richer. It seems whoever is in a Detroit Red Wings uniform gives them a great chance to win the Cup. Having said that, he has been a great fit and will continue to fill the net.
Mike, New York
Matt zach parise is doing all he can for the devils. Who else can step up to help him out?
Matthew Barnaby (4:30 PM)
Brian Gianta has to score more goals, must get back to the form that he had a few years ago. Also, a healthy Brian Rolston will do a world of good for a team that is desperate need of goals.
Mike Sisson (Oswego, Il)
With teams like Coyotes and the Kings performing bad and having low attendance, what is the likely hood of any of the teams being moved to a better hockey state such as Wisconsin in the future?
Matthew Barnaby (4:31 PM)
The reason for the low attendance has been the quality of product and position they have been in league standings. I think if you see these teams improve, people will flock to the games, therefore not needing a reason to move.
Matthew Barnaby (4:32 PM)
Look forward to all the questions next week. Enjoy the great games of hockey this week, and we'll talk soon.
