Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:01 PM)
We've got Kidder!
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
Let's get rolling! What's up Nation? I hope everyone's getting geared up for another week in the NFL. Let's get on with your NFL questions.
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
And if you have any feedback from the the Monday night football preview on PodCenter, let me know.
Peter (Boston,Ma)
You have worked with the Patriots in the past. Their secondary is hurting right now. Do you see them making a move for Hall or someone else to help them out?
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
Peter, they signed Jason Webster yesterday, a veteran player that was in their camp. I wouldn't be surprised if Hall's not claimed that a lot of teams inquire about him for the rest of the year. However my biggest concern with him is disrupting team chemistry. But the Pats have a strong lockerroom. It would be interesting to watch.
PT (Franklin, NC)
Is Jamarcus Russell a bust or is it just the lack of talent around him, do you see any progression out of him?
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
It's way too early to tell. This is a point I've been trying to make. Some young QBs can adapt quickly and some can not. This is a proven instance of that. The Raiders need to get back to running the football. Unfortunately, this team is in a downward spiral right now.
Dave (Pittsburgh, PA)
Do you think Ben will silence all of his critics this week? He himself said that he would play much better this week, and I have faith in the man.
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
I don't silencing his critics in what way? He's obviously hurt right now and his shoulder is an issue. He doesn't have any byes coming up to give him time to heal the shoulder. However, Leftwich was very good on Monday night and could be effective against a Colts defense. I think Big Ben is a great player, he's just not healthy. He'll do whatever's in his power to play.
Farbod (Los Angeles)
Who wins tonight?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
I like the Browns at home. I can't get excited about the Broncos, because their defense is so bad. Cutler is not playing with a lot of consistency right now. They have to get the running game going tonight.
Anthony (NYC)
Hey Kidder with Quinn startin today's game if he's able to perform well and holds the startin QB job for the rest of the year, what happens with Anderson?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
This is Brady Quinn's job to lose now. I think you're seeing the era begin. I think you'll see the Browns try to move Anderson in the offseason. However, you need two QBs in this league now. I don't think they just give Anderson away.
Xander (Philly)
Is Green-Ellis going to start getting the bulk of NE's carries? He looks like the best RB they have.
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
He' getting them because of the injuries at the RB position. To me, what makes this Patriot offense go is Kevin Faulk and his abilty to play in space. But the Patriots can easily use the passing game as an extension of the running game. You have to like the way Cassel played on Sunday night, he seems to be getting more comfortable in the system.
Ryan (Madtown, WI)
Carolina is on a roll right now. With three core players becoming free agents (Gamble, Gross, Peppers) have they started discussing contracts already? I'd hate to see any of them leave.
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
Gamble might be the guy that can look another way because they have Richard Marshall. You can't let starting impact linemen go easily, especailly at LT and RDE. Peppers is a beast.
Alex (Detroit)
Why is Dante Culpepper starting this week? He has taken a snap in a year and has only three days of practice. Where the teams 2nd round pick from 2 years ago, Drew Stanon, is still on the bench. With the season lost, shouldn't the Lions see what they have in Stanton? Isn't starting Culpepper this week pretty dumb?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
Great question. If he starts this week, then they have no faith in Drew Stanton. I don't know how a guy can come off the street in a short amount of time and be a huge factor. To me, I'd start with Stanton until I get Culpepper ready.
Adam (Columbus, OH)
Hey Kidder, I need this answered before BioChemistry lab in a half hour. Do you see the Colts finally getting healthy pushing them into a playoff run? Or is it a lost year with Dungy and Marv likely gone next season?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
I do. For the simple reason they have Peyton Manning. The way this season is unfolding, outside of Tennessee and Pittsburgh, there are a lot of races. It's going to be a great, great finish.
Daniel (MD)
I started thinking of this questions when watching the Giants-Steelers game two weeks ago, but couldn't come up with any sort of answer so I decided I would ask an expert. With a Spagnuolo being considered a "hot coaching commodity" because of what he has done with the Giants, why haven't guys like Dick Lebeau or Monte Kiffin, life long defensive coordinators, taken head coaching jobs. Those guys have even had new head coaches take over the teams they work for. Do these coordinators just like being that, just coordinators and why do people believe that a guy like Spagnuolo won't become a life long coordinator?
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
LeBeau was the head coach of the Bengals at one time. But Kiffin maybe was more comfortable in the role that he was as a coordinator.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Vikings or Packers this week and why? Green Bay looked good last week in a loss.
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
I like the Packers. I don't think the Vikings matchup well on the back end with the Packers' passing attack.
Matt J. (Baltimore)
The Ravens have climbed to 5-3 thanks to a few weak opponents the last few weeks. Can they hope to continue to win as the schedule toughens with rookies at 2 major skill positions?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
I love this Ravens team. We all know their defense will keep them in every game. They're very sound in the kicking game. You have to love the way Cam Cameron and his offense and the way he's gotten Joe Flacco to manage games and make plays.
Peter (Boston,Ma)
This is Cassel's last year under contract with the Pats and there's no guarentee that Brady will be ready before the season begins next year. Do you think the Pats will try hard to re-sign Cassel or do you think Cassel will look else where to get a guarenteed starting job?
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
If it makes sense from a dollar standpoint. Good backups are going anywhere from 2.5million-3 million per year. The Patriots will put a value on him and if he's willing to play at that value, then they'll keep him. That's why they drafted the kid out of San Diego State Kevin O'Connell.
david garcia (el centro calif)
Do you think Mike Singletary will win Mon night and have the 49ers ready for the second half? We need that ol skool philosophy for these nu skool divas
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
No, I don't. I would love to see Mike Singletary become the head football coach there, but I think this team has a lot more problems than people think and it starts with team ownership.
Carl (Eufuala, AL)
What do you think about Jason Campbell and kerry Collins performance in games where they cant run the football? Niether has really shown the ability to drive down the field and actually put the ball in the endzone through the air.
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
I disagree with you on Jason Campbell. He faced the best defense in the NFL in Pittsburgh on Monday night. Campbell can make plays throwing the football. Collins, to me, they made the proper adjustments against the Packers which enabled them to make some plays in the passing game. This team reminds me a lot of the 2000 Ravens.
Viking Fan (Minneapolis)
Unfortunately Kidder's probably right. Vikings pass D is horrid... be sure to start your Packer WR's and Rodgers in fantasy this week
Kev (NYC)
The Ravens haven't played any of their NFC East Schedule yet...they're not a playoff team at all.
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
Don't forget to get your Matt Millen Award nominations in!
Greg (Champaign, IL)
As far as this week's Matt Millen Award, I think Joey Porter has to be in contention. He called out Brandon Marshall and Matt Jones...
Cheese San Mateo
KK love your work. I dont see Nnamdi staying in Oakland, but who out there can afford the best corner in the league?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
Thank you. This guy is the best corner in the NFL. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way Mr. Davis is going to let him get out of Oakland.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Joey Porter for calling out Matt Jones and Brandon Marshall!
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What is your upset special this week?
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
The team that has to win this week is Buffalo. Don't be surprised if Detroit upsets Jacksonville, because things are coming unraveled in Jaguar land. However, my upset pick is the Pack over the Vikings.
Mike (San Diego)
Kidder, can we just give the Millen award to the Raiders for the rest of the year...or does that take all the fun out of it?
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
Mike, you make a great point. We might have to make a Raider award too.
Mike (New Orleans)
Saints @ Falcons...Who ya got? Can New Orleans finally string together a few wins now that they're getting a little healthier?
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
Great call. This should be a great game. I'm leaning toward the Falcons at home this weekend. They're finding ways to win and it's becoming infectious with that team. The key will be Atlanta's ability defensively to matchup with the spread.
Ryan (America's Finest City)
I second Joey Porter for the MM award. That guy doesn't know when to shut his mouth.
RS (CO)
what is the biggest problem of the weak Denver D? My vote is the safety position.
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
Personnel. This team doesn't have the right personnel to function within their scheme. It's unfortunate because a guy that's having a great year is DJ Williams, who's injured.
Giants vs. Philly?
Who ya got?
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Giants. This to me makes me not able to wait for Sunday. This is your typical NFC East bloodbath. I'm leaning toward the Giants.
Luis (SB, CA)
KK, the cowboys have a BRUTAL schedule coming back from the Bye. However, maybe i'm being blindly optimistic but I think they can pull out a 5-2 record after the bye with all the injured players coming back (Romo, Newman, Felix) putting them at 10-6 with a shot at a wildcard berth. Thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
I agree. This team was picked to win the Super Bowl by most people. Their whole focus has to be week to week and somehow find a way to get into the postseason. Anything cna happen, just ask the Giants from a year ago.
Millen Award
Goes to the Radiers offense...negative yards at the half is an impressive stat.
Philippe, Bristol CT
Do you think Pittsburgh can finish 6-2 just like they started and end up 12-4 with a first round bye?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
It will be tough, but yes. I love everything about this team except for the OL. You have to love hte way Leftwich came off teh bench and performed, which hopefully will allow Big Ben to get healed up. This is the best defense in the NFL.
john (ny, ny)
As a recent Stanford grad please tell me Al Davis is not going to hire Jim Harbaugh?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Anything's possible out there, but a guy to keep an eye on is James Lofton, who's on the staff. Everyone wants to be a head coach, but not everyone wants to coach the Raiders. Harbaugh may want to stay at Stanford. He's done a great job there.
Smitty Jones (NYC)
If you had to pick somene for rookie of they year right now who would you chooose? Forte? Ryan?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Matt Ryan.
Patrick (San Fran)
I saw a quote from a Redskins LB saying Leftwich got the ball out much quicker than Big Ben. What is Ben's problem - health, technique, mental??
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
The big problem with Ben is the fact that he likes to hold on to the ball until the last possible second until the WR becomes uncovered. That results in hits in the pocket. If he continues to take those hits, he won't last a season. Leftwich came out and played well. Goes to show you how hard it is to find a good backup. If he plays well, he might find himself a nice paycheck in the offseason.
Matt, Houston
I think Rex Grossman is going to play, despite what Kyle Orton said yesterday about not ruling out playing Sunday. If Rex has to play, is there any possible way the Bears hand the Titans their 1st loss? Thanks
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
The way this season is going, absolutely. However, this is a Lovie Smith type of game. Defense, field position, kicking game. Manage the game offensively and Big Rex can not make mistakes. They have to get this game into the fourth quarter.
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder in regards to DeAngelo Hall, we all know he's overated, yet in his first two years he did a good job. Do you tink he could get back to being that player again or is he so out of whack it's too late?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
That's a good question. You hope that he can get back to the player he was early in his career, but I have not seen any consistency the last couple of years. He was not a good system fit in Oakland for what they were doing in the back end. I saw a player who was giving up too many plays.
Matty Ice (The Burg, PA)
Kidder, how about those Steelers on Monday night, can we say Harrison and Woodley may be the most devasting OLB combo in the NFL?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
The Steelers have the best LB core in the NFL. This is a fast and very physical front seven.
Mark (Boston)
What team has been a bigger disappointment Cowboys, Colts or Bengals?
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
I would have to say the Dallas Cowboys. But no one thought the Bengals would be 1-7 right now either.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
So who gets this week's Matt Millen Award?
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
The Matt Millen Award has got to go to the Raiders organization and DeAngelo Hall. For paying a player in Hall like they did and cutting him in the 10th week of the regular season is unheard of. Now, I'm done giving the award to a Raider.
Ben (Carrollton)
Did Thomas Dimitroff fleece Al Davis or what? As a Falcon fan, I was thrilled to get 2nd and 5th rounders for D.Hall - yet many of my fellow fans protested the move. D. Hall is the embodiment of "million dollar talent with a 10 cent head"
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
I wouldn't say Dimitroff fleeced Mr. Davis. What he did when he went in there was realized he had a player in Hall with trade value and then to go out and get the deal done was impressive.
Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)
Who do you think will win the AFC East? Do you think we will see 2 teams from this division make the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
From Day 1, I've said the Patriots and I continue to say the Patriots. This is a huge game for the Bills on Sunday. They can ill-afford to lose their third division game. You have to watch out for the Jets and the Dolphins have been impressive. This is going to be fun to watch.
Marty (NH)
Should Bill Belichick be the favorite for the coach of the year if the Pats make it to the playoffs without key players in a tough division?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
We all know Bill Belichick is a great coach, but the coach of the year is in Tennessee and coach Jeff Fisher and the job that he has done.
Jake (Syracuse)
Keith, J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS to win the division, that has to be the answer
Bryon(South Buffalo)
Whats the deal with Ty Law? I thought he would be playing by now? Do you think some team will take a flyer on him?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
There is a possibility, but I think that time may have passed. You're talking about a player that had no training camp. I don't know what kind of game shape he's in right now. Money could be an issue too. I don't know. If he's not on a team right now, money must be an issue. He probably wanted more than a team wanted to pay.
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
The Jags are in so much trouble that they might lose to a winless team with a starting QB who was unemployed two weeks ago? Is Del Rio on the hot seat because of this?
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
Stay tuned on that one. It looks like things are ready to implode because he sent Mike Petterson home. He just signed a new contract. That might be the only thing that saves him.
Adam (Jersey)
Mike Smith is putting up a pretty good case for CoY
Brendan (Louisville, KY)
Miami has the easiest schedule for the rest of the season compared to the schedules of the other AFC East teams. Can they make a playoff run - AFC East winner or wildcard?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
Look at their schedule, absolutely. They have some very winnable games the next two weeks. They have the Patriots at home. They can run the ball very effectively. Their defense is very physical. They just have some problems on the back end.
Anthony (NYC)
Millen Award goes to Al Davis hands down, should give it to him for the year.
Mike Smith (Atlanta)
I know Jeff's done a good job in Tennesse, but what about me?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
Yup, you have done a great job. Keep it up because you are right in the middle of the NFC South race.
Ryan (San Diego)
Who's gonna want to face the Chargers in the playoffs when their defense regains their aggressive, attacking style to compliment their top ranked offense?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
The Chargers need to first make the playoffs then we'll talk about that later. But thank God they're in a very poor division so they should eventually win the AFC West.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Are Joey Porter's comments more of a distraction to the Dolphins that just good fun?
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
I don't think they're a distraction, because the team is winning. That's just Porter's way of motivating himself.
Jack (Cleveland)
Can Brady Quinn single handedly turn our season around?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
I don't think so, because I think there are a lot more problems than just Derek Anderson. I always thought this team was one or two more years away from being really good.
Ed (Boston)
Earth to Ryan, San Diego ain't making the playoffs.
Todd (NYC)
Fantasy question: Rather have Ronnie Brown or Brandon Jacobs from here on out?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
Put them in a hat and draw one out. You can't go wrong with either one of those guys.
Mark (Boston)
If Steven Jackson is healthy on Sunday, would you call me crazy if I picked the Rams over the Jets?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
I don't think he's going to be healthy on Sunday. But if they don't rule him out earlier, he'll definitely be a game time decision. And yes, I would call you crazy. I think excitement about the Rams has gone away.
Al Davis (on NFL Films)
Keith Kidd must go down...and he must go down hard
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila used to be an excellen pass-rusher... Now he is unemployed. What happens next?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Watch Minnesota and the Jared Allen situation and his shoulder. He is a situational pass rusher. Watch teams that have injuries. Otherwise they'll go with younger players that they can develop.
Robby (Florida)
Hines Ward got some criticism for those so called "dirty plays". They looked clean to me. Hey KK what do you think?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
I love the way Hines Ward plays the game. I think he does the one thing that a lot of WRs don't do and that's block. He always has a smile on his face and loves to play football. How can you not want him on your team?
Majeed
What's wrong with what Joey Porter said? Matt Jones should be suspended without the right to appeal!
TK (brooklyn)
Keith, what has been the problem with Buffalo's offensive line this season?? They cant get any push in the run game, they have almost given up as many sacks as they did last season, and they are just inconsistent. Is it mental errors, lack of fundamentals, poor coaching/game planning, injuries or a combination?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
They can't run the ball. Inconsistency in the running game. They have to find a way to get Lynch and this running game going. This team has suffered two major injuries on defense.
Brendan (Louisville, KY)
TK, Jason Peters isn't playing as good.
Kev (NYC)
Rank em for the next 5 years: Haynesworth, D Ware, J Tuck, M Williams.
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
All of them. Great players. Haynesworth, Tuck, Williams, Ware.
CC (Atlanta)
Any chance Roddy White makes the Pro Bowl or is he not a big enough name yet? He certainly deserves it.
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
He's becoming a big enough name and a dynamic play maker in that offense. He's come a long ways from the early years in his career.
george (atlanta)
Is this a personal chat between Keith and Greg from Champaign?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
Stop your whining.
Mona (VA)
How do the Skins rebound from a tough lose?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
They rebound because they have the Cowboys on their schedule next. This was a very tired team that needed a bye week and it came at a very good time.
Kevin (NYC)
Can you tell Mark from Boston that the Jets this year have one of the best defense against the rush.
Ben (Atlanta)
Isn't it time to acknowledge that the Falcons are bona fide playoff contenders? 5 of the final 8 games at home, just sayin........
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Absolutely. They deserve their dues. They need to pack the Georgia Dome. Big game against the Saints this week.
Jack (Cleveland)
How happy is Braylon Edwards that Brady Quinn is his QB? Will he win his bet with Michael Phelps?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
I'd be more concerned about Quinn wanting Edwards out there because of all the drops. I've never seen a player with more drops. If he catches that ball last week, we're not even talking about Brady Quinn right now.
Justin (St Paul)
How do you see Jamal Lewis doing tonight?
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
If I'm not mistaken, they're playing the Broncos defense. I would expect a big night from Lewis, especially to take pressure off of Quinn.
Mark (Boston)
Can you tell Kevin from NYC that the Rams have beaten teams with great rushing defenses already?
Paul (Denver)
Do you see the Bears slowing down the Titans running game? It seems to me it's strength against strength.
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
It's going to be very difficult. But the guy who has to have a huge game is Urlacher. Tommie Harris needs to be a force. We all know what the Titans are going to do, the Bears just have to find a way to stop it.
Ryan (State College, PA)
Who would you say has been most impressive as a rookie this season (other than Chris Johnson and Matt Ryan)?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Matt Forte, in Chicago. There have been a lot of impressive rookies. Chris Long. Chris Horton. Jerod Mayo. Jake Long.
Adam (Jersey)
Can you tell Mark and Kevin to hug it out?
Mark (Boston)
Keith Kidd you are the Man!!!
Robby (Florida)
Are you impressed with the way the Pats backups have kept them in the division race?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Yes.
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
The one backup that I'll talk about is Matt Cassel.Cassel has played pretty well over the last few weeks within the Patriots offensive system. Josh McDaniels is one of the best young coordinator's in the NFL and has done a great job with his development.
Jesse Oregon
Hey Kidder what kind of numbers do you think Torain will get tonight?
Keith Kidd (2:01 PM)
Good question. When he's in the game, the Broncos will be running the ball. I would be concerned about it because he's a young player playing in a hostile environment.
Brendan (Louisville, KY)
Didn't torrain get 4 against the Fins last week? I'm going to go crazy and say 12 tonight.
Justin (Bossier)
Saints and Pittsburgh Superbowl. What are the odd?
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
Can odds be negative?
Brendan (Louisville, KY)
Justin, Never?
Mark (Boston)
And let Adam know that Boston and NYC will NEVER HUG IT OUT!!! Thanks
Ryan (America's Finest City)
No love for Clady?? That guy is a beast!
Keith Kidd (2:03 PM)
Oh yeah, he'll get his props. I forgot about him.
Jeff Florida
hey kidder, nice toupe
Nick (Cleveland, OH)
Keith, is it true that the Browns didn't give Braylon Edwards any flu shots this year because they figured he wouldn't catch anything?
Mona (VA)
Will Portis finish with the most rushing yards?
Keith Kidd (2:04 PM)
Portis without a doubt is my midseason offensive player of the year. He's had a great year.
chris (brooklyn, ny)
Dick Labeau was a head coach. The Bengals stunk when he was there, just like they do now.
Keith Kidd (2:04 PM)
Good job of looking that up.
Kev (NYC)
Can you please let Nick know that's one of the weakest jokes I've ever heard?
Jim (Idaho)
Clady is playing better than Jake Long...how bout a vote for him?
Sean (Phoenix, AZ)
Keith, have you ever seen receivers on the same team the likes of Boldin and Fitzgerald? These guys are just about unstoppable!
Keith Kidd (2:05 PM)
The way the Cardinals have used them in their design is impressive. If I were them, I'd hang on to Boldin.
Adam (Jersey)
Sorry, Mark. I don't know where my head was on that one...
Keith Kidd (2:06 PM)
Everyone have a great weekend. Good luck with your favorite NFL teams and be sure to check out my Monday night preview on the PodCenter. We'll see you next week.
