Chat with USC LB Clay Matthews

In USC's 56-0 win over Washington last weekend, Matthews recorded half a sack and four tackles. Saturday, Matthews and USC face California (8 p.m. ET, ABC).
Matthews has been a key member of the USC defense this season. He is first on the team in sacks (4.0) and second on the team in tackles for loss (6.0). He is also fifth on the team in tackles with 38 and tied for first in fumble recoveries with two.
A one-time walk-on, Matthews received a scholarship in the fall of 2006 as a red-shirt sophomore. He has served as a special teams player and backup linebacker until this season.
Send in your questions now and then join Matthews at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday!

Clay Matthews (4:00 PM)
Hey, how is everyone doing?
Mike, L.A.
Hey Clay, I know SC is all about taking it one game at a time and treating every week like a championship week, but do any of the guys talk about the rankings or feel you guys should be ranked higher?
Clay Matthews (4:01 PM)
I think as players we do like to look at the rankings and see where we are, but at the same time coach Carroll stresses we take it one game at a time. And provided we keep winning, everything should work out.
Jerry (Bham, Bama)
Clay, do you guys seriously think you can make it to the BCS title game?
Clay Matthews (4:02 PM)
All we can control is winning our games, and obviously we are going to try and win the rest of our games and hopefully the BCS will take care of us; but if not, I hear Obama supports a playoff system so maybe we can count on that.
Wes (San Diego)
Did you freak out with the Will Ferrell stunt?
Clay Matthews (4:04 PM)
As a matter of fact I did. With the White stunt no one fell for that, but this was more realistic. I thought we may have had a tragedy at hand. But when I saw Ferrell with the supposed victim in his hands, I realized it was just another Halloween joke.
Justin (Los Angeles)
Hey Clay, is this the best defense that USC has had, since you walked on?
Clay Matthews (4:05 PM)
I would say it is one of the best. We have had plenty of great defenses and it rivals 2004. But as a senior, and having seen how this unit has come along and developed, I would say this is one of the top defenses we have had.
Arty (Spokane)
Who do you expect the biggest challenge to be in finishing your season?
Clay Matthews (4:06 PM)
I think each team presents a challenge. Every team can create problems for us, and we need to treat each game as the biggest game of the season. Every game is a championship game to us, each game as important as the other.
Jeff(Culver City, CA)
Clay, which position do you enjoy playing more, Linebacker or Defensive End?
Clay Matthews (4:08 PM)
Just getting on the field is most important to me. I love playing LB because I have played it ever since I was a little kid, but I also love this new position since I can have more free range and really get after the QB.
Wes (San Diego)
Clay, you can choose any NFL Defense to play for.....where do you go?
Clay Matthews (4:10 PM)
Not to be politically correct, but any team that wants to pick me up I will be happy to go there. Whether it is a 3-4 or 4-3 works for me. So any team willing to give me a chance to play I will be happy to play for them and would be willing to play stand-up DE or LB.
Justin (Santa Clarita, California)
Hey Clay, What makes USC so attractive when going to a college?
Clay Matthews (4:11 PM)
I would say everything. It is a top university, it has a great location and it is also known for a great athletic tradition. All those things make it very attractive for recruits.
Brian (Tucson)
How was it playing @ Arizona Stadium a few weeks ago?
Clay Matthews (4:12 PM)
It was a real challenge. They love their football and they really brought it and gave us a challenge (I think they call it the Zona Zoo). It was a great Pac-10 victory and a major learning experience. I really enjoyed it.
Justin (College Station)
What is the funniest quirk about Coach Pete?
Clay Matthews (4:14 PM)
It would have to be his ability to compete. He always wants to do it. He is always racing players to the next drill or playing catch with someone. He is always competing and stressing the importance of it. He has a lot of fun. I am not sure if that is a quirk, but he really likes to just get after it.
Arty (Spokane)
What victory are you most proud of during your career?
Clay Matthews (4:15 PM)
Tough one. I would not say one is more important than another other than title wins, and Rose Bowl wins. Every game has its importance and every win leads to another. I would have to say the last win of the season in whatever game that turns out to be.
Clay Matthews (4:15 PM)
Thanks for all the questions. Take care.
