Matt Williamson (12:57 PM)
Hey folks. Let's get started.
Nizar ( Emerson, NJ)
Hey Matt. Who will win between the Giants and Cards this Sunday and why ?
Matt Williamson (12:57 PM)
REALLY looking forward to this game, but I will take NYG. Just can't vote against that team right now. They are so tough in all areas.
Steve Schutte (Maui)
Hello Matt, which WR do you think will do better in the Carolina-Atlanta: Roddy or Steve Smith? I'm taking Roddy even though Carolina has a better D.
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
That is a tough call, but I do think Roddy is safer. Delhomme and that passing game has really been non-existent the last two weeks.
Rich Highland MI
If the season ended today and the Lions have the first pick in the 2009 draft where do you see them turning? Quarterback,O-Line,D-Line?
Matt Williamson (1:00 PM)
I haven't dug deep into the prospects yet, but they certainly have needs at all three of those spots you mentioned. That is for sure! Still, all the players being equal, I think I would go for the QB for that team-unless Culpepper starts to show a lot of promise.
dan (east lansing mi)
Lions going 0-16? if not, who do you think there best bet to win a game is against?
Matt Williamson (1:01 PM)
I would say it is 50/50, but really don't see anyone on their schedule who I feel like they can beat. Would bet right now that they do go winless.
Eric (Sioux City)
Weekly Jared Gaither report. Shutdown Kiwi with one arm. The guy will be a pro-bowler next year.
Matt Williamson (1:03 PM)
Perhaps. LOTS of talent. You should have seen him in high school. El Rossevelt HS in Maryland-he and Derrick Harvey (& many other studs) all on the same team. He was a DE/TE. Ran down the field with the ball in his hand-it looked like a coke can in his huge hands. Speciman.
Eric (Sioux City)
Lions should draft Andre Smith. Backus is way overpaid. Foster and is bust and Gosder will be.
Matt Williamson (1:03 PM)
I certainly would not argue with that. DT and DE are glaring needs as well. Detroit is not at a shortage for needs.
Anthony (Livingston,NJ)
Jets or Tenessee this weekend and score?
Matt Williamson (1:04 PM)
Tenn 17 NYJ 20-I know I am going out on a limb, but call me a beleiver in the Jets and Jenkins will squash that running game.
Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)
Matt, What is going on here in Buffalo? Do you think if the Bills continue to lose they will end up firing Dick Jauron? Please say YES!
Matt Williamson (1:05 PM)
I highly doubt that. He was just re-upped! I thought Jauron did a terrific job last year-and in the first half of this year. But, wow, that O is just a mess right now. Edwards is so shell shocked since his concussion.
jake (NYC)
How much would Bjac want from the Giants to stay and how much will teams offer him per year to get him?
Matt Williamson (1:06 PM)
Not sure what the numbers will end up being, but he will be in demand and if I were running the Giants, I would be more prone to re-sign Webster over Jacobs.
Greg (Arlington, VA)
Does KC get their second win this week?
Matt Williamson (1:07 PM)
Starting to feel that way. KC's O is actually rather impressive now and the D is still playing hard.
Marc (NY)
Is Fassel that desperate to be a coach? Wouldn't you run as fast as you can from the Oakland job.
Matt Williamson (1:08 PM)
No question. From what I understand, he and Al Davis have a good relationship, but still!
Anthony: (NY City, NY)
I beg to differ with the statement that the Lion's will lock up the #1 choice next year. My Chiefs will keep losing the rest of the way and Lions will win their Vikes game withe the impending suspension of the 2 Williams'.
Matt Williamson (1:09 PM)
I see where you are coming from, but I think KC gets a win and Peterson will run all over the Lions.
Jake, NYC
You mean Corey Webster? Then they would try to keep Ward as well?
Matt Williamson (1:10 PM)
Yes-and yes. I know they like that Ware kid as well. Plus, you can still use a reasonably high pick on a RB. I just really worry about Jacobs' ability to stay healthy.
Jeff (KC)
Please tell me KC want draft a QB with their top 3 pick. Thigpen has shown legitimate talent, and, aside from Ryan, QBs drafted in the top 10 lately have been horrible. That sets a franchise back five years.
Matt Williamson (1:11 PM)
Thigpen has shown me enough that I would not go QB at the top of the draft for KC. Get a top notch OT or better yet, DE to replace J Allen.
Kev (NYC)
Can you come up with a better candidate for most overrated player: McNabb?
Matt Williamson (1:13 PM)
I usually talk highly of McNabb, but starting to fall off the bandwagon. I know the running game has a ton to do with it, but that team just NEVER wins a close game. Plus, his accuracy has really been a problem of late. Plenty of overrated gusy in the league though!
Bills fans
We want Marty Schottenheimer here in Buffalo? He is a former Buffalo Bill and obviously a good headcoach!
Matt Williamson (1:13 PM)
There you have it
Eric (Sioux City)
I wouldn't be surprised to see Jacobs and Ward leave. Bradshaw and Ware have talent. Besides, Blair Thomas would be successfull behind that line.
Matt Williamson (1:14 PM)
Exactly. To me, RB is the easiest piece to add/change. Jacobs brings some rare qualities to the table, but for what he will get on the open market-I think I go elsewhere.
Rob (Jackson Cty)
How about Andre Smith to the Chiefs in the 1st and the best center in the second. Move Albert to LG.
Matt Williamson (1:15 PM)
Nothing wrong with that and there are a lot of real good OC prospects this year. Still need D help though!
Jerry (Texas)
Do you think that it will take 8 million or near that to secure the services of Cowher?
Matt Williamson (1:16 PM)
Yeah, I think that is the right neighborhood. Nice neighborhood to be in!
Kev (NYC)
I'm not going to get ahead of myself but if the Giants win the Super bowl, you start tos ee that they're really only older players are Madison & Toomer. THey have a young, O-line, RBs, DLine & Secondary...Do they have what it takes to establish a dynasty?
Matt Williamson (1:18 PM)
Even if they don't win a Super Bowl. all those things are still true and that front office has done a real nice job getting quality players in all areas of the draft. Dynasty? Hard to say. What exactly is a dynasty? I don't see them four SBs in six years or dominating the early 90s like Dallas did.
Jon(Ohio)
What are your impressions of Brady Quinn's first two starts?
Matt Williamson (1:19 PM)
First off-he is already far better than D Anderson. I like Quinn. Just think-this kid was a 4 year starter at Notre Dame-18/19 year old with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He handled that very well. Good athlete. Enough arm. Big strong body. Sees the field well. Still hesitant to let the deep one fly, but he is a keeper.
Ryan (San Diego)
I think if the Chargers win this game against the Colts, they will get on a run and win the west. If they dont, they will miss the playoffs. Who ya got on sunday?
Matt Williamson (1:20 PM)
I just sent that game in and did pick the Chargers as well. I think/guess that LT is going to have that huge breakout game this week. Yes, give me SD to win the West as well. Just think if the refs got that call right when SD played Den-both would be 5-5 with SD owning the tie breaker.
Adam (Jersey)
You mentioned that Trent Edwards looks shell-shocked since his concussion. Do you think it could actually be lingering physical effects of the injury, or strictly mental?
Matt Williamson (1:21 PM)
No way for me to know that-but both seem plausible. Afraid to hold the ball and go downfield. Seems much slower to process info.
Tom (AZ)
I would like to suggest moving Pats linemen Mankins and Koppen to the top of the overrated list. They are thought of as the best, but neither is close to pro-bowl caliber.
Matt Williamson (1:22 PM)
Not a bad call. Amazing how Brady made all those linemen look better than they are.
Matt (PA)
Do the Packers leave AJ Hawk at MLB beyond this year? He looks much more suited to it than OLB.
Matt Williamson (1:23 PM)
Then what do you do with Barnett? Hawk goes back to OLB.
me (my house)
When can Calvin Johnson get out of the hell that is Detroit? Wouldnt it be great to see him playing for a team that actually still played FOOTBALL? Kid is a monster
Matt Williamson (1:24 PM)
That would be awesome. Just think of him on just about any other team in the league...
Jonathan (Brooklyn, NY)
Any chance Cleveland are the ones to pony up 8 million for Cowher?
Matt Williamson (1:24 PM)
That wouldn't shock me
kent (n'awlins)
Brees for MVP? Without him, the Saints would be lucky to be 2-8, with 13 starters on I.R. now.
Matt Williamson (1:24 PM)
I would vote for Warner, but Brees' season has been MVP worthy
JR (Chicago, IL)
If Carson Palmer returns to form, the AFC North might be considered the division with the best QBS next year.
Matt Williamson (1:25 PM)
Hmmm-NFC East?
jason thomas ((houston))
is dallas gonna be this years giants from last year..
Matt Williamson (1:26 PM)
That wouldn't shock me. Buy low on Dallas right now. They could catch fire just at the right time.
Al (okc)
Jack Del Rio safe in Jacksonville or next rumor for Raiders job?
Matt Williamson (1:27 PM)
Well, just think back after the 2006 season-Del Rio was on the hot seat. Then, the Jags put a good season together and he gets a new deal. I think he is safe, but another rough one in 2009 could be all she wrote.
Kev (NYC)
How right was Parcells about Jason taylor?
Matt Williamson (1:29 PM)
Injuries have been an issue with JT, but yeah, no doubt that Miami got the best of that deal. Stock pile those draft picks!
Tito (Dallas)
T/F...Flozell Adams was the worst signing of the year. Doug Free couldn't possibly do any worse and he makes millionth of Adams.
Matt Williamson (1:31 PM)
The penalties with Adams are just mind boggling. Having Romo back will help Adams-but I certainly hear where you are coming from.
Tanard Jackson
MWill, I'll see you in Hawaii.
Matt Williamson (1:32 PM)
That could happen. Assuming each conference takes four safeties-who would you put ahead of TJax? Wilson, I really like Landry, Collins. Those are just off the top of my head-surely forgetting someone.
Jon (Mad-town)
Where should I direct my anger? Devin Hester the best weapon in the game was just relieved of return duties and is regressing as a receiver. The NFLs most exciting player has been neutured (for lack of a better word) in half a season.
Matt Williamson (1:33 PM)
That is very odd to me. He hasn't scored in 11 game or something like that and now he isn't the top return guy? Huh? Might be more to that story than we know.
Kev (NYC)
Better 4th round pick in 2005 (and you have to pick one!): MBIII or BJacobs?
Matt Williamson (1:34 PM)
Would rather have the Barbarian here
PT (Franklin, NC)
Any chance the Raiders can rehire Lane Kiffin as Quarterback coach?
Matt Williamson (1:34 PM)
Yeah, that split up between Kiffin and Al Davis went so smoothly that I am sure he would be welcomed back with open arms.
Derrick (Tulsa, OK)
Is Marc Bulger done? Do you think the Rams will go another direction at QB despite how difficul gitting rid of Bulger would be?
Matt Williamson (1:35 PM)
I wouldn't get rid of Bulger immediatly, but they MUST get a young prospect in there at least. Trent Green can't be counted on down the road! Draft a QB pretty high and develop the guy.
JJ (DC)
Dude, get over that Hochuli call already. SD is 2 games back with 6 to play and is down on the tie breaker. Stop sweating them based on preseason forecasts. Some scouting...
Matt Williamson (1:37 PM)
I don't love SD as much as I think Den is bad. Very well could have the very worst D in the whole league. The Hulk-uli call really doesn't change my life one way or another one bit.
John ( PHX,AZ)
Chances that both Fitz and Bolden are starting for the NFC in the pro bowl this year
Matt Williamson (1:38 PM)
Gotta think both are going, but starting? Hmm. Who else would compete for that in the NFC? R White. G Jennings. Calvin J. S Moss. I like their chances of starting!
Mike (Boca Raton)
given the significant injuries the bengals have on their oline, are we looking at a bloodbath tomorrow v. the steelers?
Matt Williamson (1:38 PM)
I think Cincy is in for a long long night-especially Fitzpatrick.
Kev (NYC)
You have 1st pick for defense for the next 7 years: Rank the following: Tuck, Asomugha, Haynesworth, Merriman, Mario W
Matt Williamson (1:41 PM)
All are great. Merriman would be last, esp with the injury and suspension issues. Would take Ware over Merriman now. Right now, I think Haynesworth is the biggest difference maker, but he has been playing for a new contract in each of the last two seasons. I wouldn't be shocked if his production fell after he eventually signs. I know that is similiar for Asomugha as well, but I just trust him more in that regard-but CBs are not as important as DL, esp DT. Defensive linemen make the world go round. I guess Haynesworth.
Adam (Jersey)
Can I be the first to suggest the nickname N/A for Asomugha? I feel like it's an obvious one, but it works since the receiver he covers is "not applicable."
Matt Williamson (1:43 PM)
Hmmm...will kick that one around. I have a tough time pronouncing Asomugha correctly anyways. Just one of those tough words to say right.
Refrigerator Perry
How about another ranking. This is a hard one -- NTs Jenkins, Rogers, Hampton, Ngata, and Wilfork.
Matt Williamson (1:44 PM)
Great list. The bottom two for me would be Wilfork and Hampton-but all of these guys are great. I would probably put Rogers third just because you still see some of the stamina problems and he isn't on the field enough. Ngata just edges out Jenkns. Ngata is the most athletic of the bunch.
Doug (NY)
Forgot Tuck in the prior discussion
Matt Williamson (1:45 PM)
I didn't bring up Mario W either. Love them both. Williams prob has more upside overall, but Tuck is the better player now. Does it all.
Carter (Denver)
Everyone knows about Clady and Royal, but what do you think of Woodyard and Hillis. Hillis is a matchup nightmare and Woodyard has 20 tackles in two starts.
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
Woodyard was very productive at U of KY. That is showing up. Need to attack him straight on. Not big or powerful enough. As for Hillis-great guy to have on your team. Do it all. Not sure that he is that much of a matchup nightmare though.
Jeff (Buffalo)
Wow, couldn't disagree more about Wilfork at the bottom. The guy is 3rd among all dlineman in tackles. And people forget what a good pass rusher he was at Miami.
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
I know-he's awesome. A total beast. Just like those couple studs a bit more.
jason
What do you think the browns could get for DA
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
Probably less than many think. 4th rounder?
Jon (Mad-town)
Speaking of young talent on the D-line what in the world happened to Tommie Harris? He went from being named best young tackle in the game and a young Warren Sapp to the Invisible Man.
Matt Williamson (1:48 PM)
Very true and he is the most important player on that enitire D. Has fought a lot of injuries, but he should never be that hard to spot.
Jason(OR)
How do you feel the NFC North will play out? It seems the Packers are favored, but the Bears have the easiest schedule coming out.
Matt Williamson (1:49 PM)
I will take the Pack. Most well rounded. Probably Chi second and that schedule will be helpful. Plus, I think Orton will play better than he did last week. Give me the Lions to finish last.
Mike (Minneapolis)
Is Monte Kiffin the best assistant coach in the NFL?
Matt Williamson (1:50 PM)
No one is better-many on par though. Guys like Tom Moore, Jim Johnson, Howard Mudd, Dick LeBeau, Rex Ryan, etc.
ameer (irvington, nj)
do you think the chiefs will be able to get a great f.a. pass rusher (suggs, a,haynes, peppers) in the offseason?
Matt Williamson (1:51 PM)
Have a hard time believing that any of thsoe guys leave their respective team.
Kev (NYC)
Steve Spags!
Matt Williamson (1:52 PM)
Exactly-there are a lot of them, but yeah, Kiffin is a HOF caliber guy in my opinion. Can't believe that coordinators are not able to get in.
Matt (Houston)
DA, a 25 year old pro-bowler, only fetches a 4th rounder, yet the Texans trade two seconds for Schaub? Great illustration of Houston's incompetence.
Matt Williamson (1:53 PM)
I just don't think that Anderson is very good. Maybe a third I guess for a real QB-needy team (MIN?).
Jon (Mad-town)
Which rookie RB do you want on your team for the next 5 years, McFadden, Forte, Stewart, Smith, or Johnson?
Matt Williamson (1:54 PM)
Once again, all look great, but I would put Smith last. McF 4th. Huge believer in Stewart here, but he just hasn't shown as much as the other two. Still, heck with it, give me Stewart. Johnson would be 2 and Forte 3. However, if you get a guy like Johnson, you better have a LenDale type nearby.
Kev (NYC)
Osi, Tuck, & Kiwi? How nasty is the Giants DL going to be next year?
Matt Williamson (1:55 PM)
Exactly! Their D should be better next year than in 2008. Robbins and Cofield are excellent players as well in the middle.
Steve (Park HIlls, Missouri)
Matt, If the Chiefs get the 1st or 2nd pick they need to trade down for two 1's and draft a DE and ILB. Then go for OC and OG in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Would that work?
Matt Williamson (1:57 PM)
Of course that would work. Just look at the OCs and OGs who have been picked at the beginning of the 2nd rountd-some of the very best OGs and OCs in hthe league. Remember, they will probably add something via free agency as well.
JP (NYC)
Who from the G-men do you expect to play in Hawaii this year?
Matt Williamson (1:58 PM)
Hmmm-will Eli go? Take three from NFC-Warner and Brees are in. Jacobs should go unless he misses substantial time. Snee for sure. Tuck for sure. Might that be it? Hedgecock might have a chance.
Jason (Pitt)
Some Steelers love please. Considering the Steelers tend to be frugal when resigning players, James Harrison sure looks like he will command top LB dollars when his contract is up after next year. Do they resign him?
Matt Williamson (1:59 PM)
They have to. HAVE to. Superstar.
Eric (Sioux City)
KC better get another OT in the 1st two rounds. Damion McIntosh is horrible.
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
Prob won't fill all their needs0they have a lot!
Dave (Omaha, NE)
Matt, Anybody more deserving than James Harrison for Defensive MVP?
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
He has been tremendous, but I think that award is Haynesworth's to lose.
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
Okay-I am out. It was fun as usual. Take care.
